If people of a different subject position than you are expressing concerns regarding a source of difficulty and/or trauma in their lived experiences, and it doesn’t apply to your experience, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. That means you are blessed with a certain type of privilege that allows you not to have to think about or deal with that particular challenge in your daily life. Instead of denying or diminishing the lived reality of others, simply because it doesn’t reflect your own, instead try active listening, keeping an open heart, and practicing empathy. Understand your life isn’t the sole reflection of the human experience. It might not be a part of your life, and that’s fine, how lucky you are, but it is very much a part of someone else’s.

Ellen Jantzen The Quest for Deep Meaning
Growing from a synthesis of personal experience and external reality, Ellen Jantzen blends photography with digital post-production to evoke a poetic landscape. Each artistic series tracks the unfolding events of her life: her changing sense of place, her connection with Nature, and the poignant disconnection of bereavement. She does not claim to provide an answer to those timeless human questions, but rather to share her own processes of thinking and feeling about them. Her work exists within an empathic space, a space of shared emotional connection. The quest for deep meaning is a journey in which what matters is not the destination, but the time spent with fellow travellers.
Ellen Jantzen discusses the ideas and emotions behind her work at Talking Pictures.

INT. COZY ROOM – DAY The room is filled with an array of Egyptian deities. Osiris, Isis, Horus, Thoth, Bastet, and Anubis gather around a table, which is adorned with a teapot, tea cups, and an assortment of cakes. '[T]he thicket of mind and flesh, the one on fire with the awareness of death, of your grave-bound life. [A]nd above all, the awareness of the crumbling, meaningless insubstantiality of life lived only by your own lights. [T]hat burden is what … relationship[s] [can help relieve]'

The idea that we must always be doing something is completely cultural (and completely unhealthy). Notice how we only feel we are doing “something” when that “something” can be externally measured by other people.
In the “do nothing” state, the brain is super powering itself: it’s completing unconscious tasks or integrating and processing conscious experiences. In the resting state, neural networks can process experiences, conciliate memories, reinforce learning, regulate attention and emotions, and in turn, keep us more productive and effective in our day-to-day work.  “Idleness is not just a vacation, an indulgence or a vice; it is as indispensable to the brain as vitamin D is to the body, and deprived of it we suffer a mental affliction as disfiguring as rickets… The space and quiet that idleness provides is a necessary condition for standing back from life and seeing it as a whole, for making unexpected connections and waiting for the wild summer lightening strikes of inspiration — it is, paradoxically, necessary to getting any work done.” — Tim Kreider

McDowell County in southern West Virginia was at one time the largest producer of coal in WV. Since mines are slowly closing, these small towns are feeling the pain with businesses closing and unemployment. This has put this county on the list of the poorest county in the US. It’s sad and not only does it affects people, it also affects the ability to care for pets. This stray dog looked at me with sad eyes. I stopped and I happened to have some of my dogs food in my truck. I was welcomed with a tail wag! I sat down gave her the food and kept her company for awhile before going further south for a visit with a new friend to make some photos. “When you rub shoulders with the poor it will change your life” Please reach out to people in need in your own area.
