Can you tell us what you think “stopped trying to drill the safe” means?
well, a safe is a strong object used to protect/hide valuables. ideally, you unlock a safe with a code, and it opens freely, but if you don't have the code, you need to find ways to force your way in, like by drilling through the sides.
it paints a picture of joe as someone who's private, guarded, impenetrable, at least to taylor. she couldn't get him to open up to her, and she made the decision to stop trying to force it.
also reminds me of the alcott (i had to do something to break into your golden thinking) and how it's a story of a couple that is drifting from each other, they're becoming strangers to each other.
also reminds me of hoax (you knew the password so i let you in the door) and how that describes a relationship where she's been deeply hurt by someone who knows her tenderest, most vulnerable wounds.
and renegade (there was nowhere for me to stay, but i stayed anyway ... open the blinds, let me see your face), where she's begging her partner to let her in. she couldn't crack the safe.

Some years ago a lady brought to the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh a trout covered with a fine coat of white fur. It was pleasingly mounted on a wooden shield and was labelled as follows:
FUR BEARING TROUT
Very Rare
Caught while trolling in Lake Superior off Gros Cap, Near Sault Ste. Marie, district of Algoma. It is believed that the great depth and the extreme penetrating coldness of the water in which these fish live has caused them to grow their dense coat of (usually) white fur. Mounted by ROSS C. JOBE, Taxidermist of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.
Visiting the museum to find out more about her unique fish, the lady was told that it was undoubtedly a trout (either brown or brook) and that its fine white coat was undoubtedly from a rabbit, whereupon she immediately presented the fish to the museum. She had bought this fake in good faith which indicates that the idea of a fur-bearing trout did not seem outlandish to her.

i admit that i enjoyed being ~right~ about hoax but i didn't want to be that right
can you spell this out for me a little i can't remember exactly what you've said about hoax 😭
tldr is that i thought it described a pretty dark/troubling time in her relationship, that the line "faithless love" was more literal than figurative, that something bad happened and she was grappling with it, these were more than just standard relationship troubles... idk, like the vibe was just Bad.

my initial take on hoax was that it was taylor grappling with joe's fatalism/skepticism about their relationship
this one is funny - context: i used to be a kaylor debunking blog so i was noticing, at the time, that kaylors were picking up on these darker bits of the song that swifties at the time were sort of explaining away
