Family is something precious.

You lay on the hospital bed, stroking your round tummy as you prepare to give birth to your 3rd child.

Deku checked you in yesterday because he was sure your water was going to break soon, and the doctors had confirmed his calculations by allowing you a bed in a shared ward.

The lady you're rooming with is pregnant too, but her situation is entirely different from yours. It's as if there's a party going on at her side of the ward. There were family, friends, extended relatives and so many more people you can't count that it made you feel like you were invading her space.

You suspected that this was her first child, considering how loud they were being, the raw excitement in the soon-to-be mother voice and the lack of screaming children.

On your side of the room sat your lonesome self, stroking your belly as you whispered soft coos to your unborn child. You weren't bothered by the noise as it gave you something else to focus on. However, on the off chance that you did look up, a pitied gaze was all you can see from the lady on the bed.

Her gaze was sympathetic as if saying, aww you poor thing, no one to celebrate with you, as her friends gushed about her very first child ever so loudly

You paid no mind to her.

You were content, and no matter how many of those looks she threw you, you wouldn't let her get you down.

"Mummyyyy!" Tiny footsteps thumped one by one into the room, making your head turn to the doorway. Your adorable 4-year-old stumbled in, arms outstretched high in the air with a heart-winning smile on her face.

"Is Mummy okay? Hiroko-chan's in there, right?" Your sweet girl has the most adorable voice, her tiny hands pressed against your stomach gently as she stands on her tiptoes to attempt to climb onto your bed.

"Kumiko, sweetheart, I told you not to run off without Papa, right?" A tuff of green hair pops into view by the doorway as Midoriya steps into the ward. His hair is in disarray, eyebags prominent under his eyes, but his smile was so bright it looked as if he was practically glowing. In his arms was your sleeping two-year-old, fast asleep against your husband's chest.

Your eldest blinks at her father, processing his words before bowing her head in shame. "Sorry, Papa," She apologised. The Number 1 hero smiled, bending down to ruffle his daughter's hair. "Don't do it again, okay?"

Nodding her head vigorously, Kumiko patted the mattress of your bed, signalling for help to get her on it to join you under the covers. With a small boost by Midoriya, the four-year-old successfully climbed onto the bed and curled up right next to your tummy.

"Hey, Y/n," Midoriya greeted softly, directing his attention towards you now. "How you holding up, hun?"

You mirror his smile, gently stroking your daughter's head as you meet his eyes. "Good. You?"

Midoriya blows out an awkward chuckle,

You raised an eyebrow. "Kids' got you running all over the place again?"

A nod from the blushing broccoli boy.

Out of the corner of your eye, you saw people on the other side of the room with their jaws hanging ajar as Midoriya leaned in for a kiss.

You reciprocated happily, tasting the sweet flavour of comfort that you'd missed in the hospital.

The once looks of pity had turned to envy, seeing how the Number 1 Hero had chosen you as his partner for life.

But that wasn't the only thing that caught their attention.

The woman's eyes were fixated on your little girl, eyes wide with curiosity as she pressed her ear against your womb. "Hiroko-chan~" She sang, kissing your belly. "Onee-san's waiting for you...come out soon, okay?"

"'Zuku, could you draw the curtain for me?" You whispered, eyes wandering down to check if your youngest was still sleeping. "I'd like some time with just my family."

OSAKA

If you go to Osaka around the end of a month, there's a monthly temple flea market in the Shitennoji temple yard. It's arranged on 21st and 22nd of each month, and regular people are selling there their old stuff, as well as booths selling vintage kimonos, yukatas, haoris etc., ceramics, decorations, lots of antique items, statues etc. Take a subway to Tennoji station, the temple is next it. In Osaka, near Tenma JR railwaystation, is a takoyaki shop owned by an 86 year old lady called Hiroko. She's been making takoyakis for 60 years in that shop. You might have seen this image set of Hiroko giving a piece of her mind about people complaining that her food is too yellow (if not, see it - it's hilarious!) Her shop is called たこ焼き寛子（ひろこ), Takoyaki Hiroko (Hiroko). The address is 5 Chome-6-3 Tenjinbashi, Kita Ward, Osaka, 530-0041, Japan. If you use subway, get off at Ogimatchi station to get to her store.

If you love toys and anime merch, there are two good spots for these in Osaka; one is the famous Den Den Town and other one is Kiddy Land in Umeda.

You can get to Den Den Town the easiest from Nipponbashi metro station. Just head towards south. You can also walk from Namba to Den Den Town as it's just right the next corner.

Kiddy Land is a bit harder to locate in the gigantic Hankyuu department store (which is like multiple building spreading across the whole Umeda) but you can get there the best from Umeda station. Kiddy Land has lots of toy stores, like Miffy, San-X, and a mixed store of everything cute, and also a Lego store. If you go out from the building from the door next to the Lego store, you can walk a few ten meters to a big Loft-store. It also has some merch, typically San-X and Sanrio and Disney stuff, but on the top floor of the same building there's an anime store. They sell lots of art books, replica swords and also special collectible statues like Japanese deities.

Special mentioning goes to the Namba Daiso (Namba Daiso Nansan-dori). It has 5 floors, all stuff with 100 yens. It's very near Namba metro station, easy to find! If you want to get super fancy and you've got a big budget, the Takashimaya department store is near this Daiso. You can find all kind of food items there, some with ridiculous prices. There's also Daimaru department store in Namba in close proximity - they sell fresh made taiyaki cakes in the bottom floor's food section.

KYOTO

Near Kyoto, you can find a small town of Arashiyama. It is the most well-known for its ancient wooden bridge and bamboo forests. People go just walk around into the bamboo forest. Many movies and TV series has been filmed in that forest. There's a direct train service to Arashiyama from Kyoto. Arashiyama is especially gorgeous at the end of November when the fall has arrived to Kansai area. It's apparently also super pretty during cherry flower season in spring. There are lots of temples in a small area, too, if you want to explore them.

In Kyoto, there's a design shop of SOU SOU. Now, SOU SOU makes and sells handmade tabi shoes, kimonos, yukatas, string bags, dishware, and wonderful print tabi socks but they also have their own, traditional Japanese café at their Kyoto store called Sou Sou Zaifu. You can get only coffee and matcha tea here - the order is hand made in order in front of you. It's very quiet and idyllic, intimate place. I accidentally went here to find shelter from a rain and it was so lovely. Even the shop itself is worth the visit, if you're interested in fashion and design! Read more here.

TOKYO

If you travel in Tokyo, about 45 minutes by train from Tokyo is the city of Saitama. Saitama has a Sayama Hills at Tokorozama, which is also known as The Totoro Forest. Hayao Miyazaki has taken inspiration to Totoro from Sayama Hills. It was hard to find any information of this place in English (and even in Japanese!) in the past, but nowadays there's information in English. Read more here (with a Japanese map)

After the encounter at the shrine, Chiaki spent a long time simply wandering around, hoping to run into Nagito again. At some point, she saw a gigantic Monokuma strutting about, knocking away and crushing all the smaller Monokumas in it's path. It seemed to be approaching Towa Hills. Oh, that's right. I remember Komaeda-kun mentioning it when he was talking to Naegi-san and Fukawa-san... Something about a base? ...Maybe I should've payed more attention.

Tired of mindless wandering, she decided to approach the large building as well. As she got closer, she noticed a large group of people gathered nearby cheering for the giant Monokuma. These people... I get a bad feeling about them. I'll just... watch from a distance.

Chiaki concealed herself behind some of the piles of debris. Despite this, a smoking woman with messy pink hair noticed her and approached. "Hey there. Haven't see you before, you a new rescue?" Unlike the rest of the crowd, the lady before her seemed pretty normal. Her voice was relaxed and mature, practically oozing the energy of a well-experienced older woman. Chiaki was so stunned by her aura she forgot to reply.

"...Lost for words, huh? Guess even young ladies like you aren't immune to my womanly charm. It's alright, you're not the first one. My name's Hiroko Hagakure, and you are?" Finally snapping out of her daze, Chiaki answered, "...Oh, sorry. I'm Chiaki Nanami, a member of Future Foundation, branch office 14. Nice to meet you, Hagakure-san."

"A Future Foundation member...? My, and here I thought the only member in the city was Fufu. Chiaki Nanami, huh? I'll just call you Nana then." Nana? ...Oh, I see. She took the first part of my family name and made it a nickname. And Fufu... Is probably Fukawa-san. So she's met her... "Sorry for all the ruckus, after Koko's motivational speech, the adults here have gotten a bit... too excited. It totally went to their heads."

"...Yeah, I can see that. Say... do you know anything about that big Monokuma?" The question had been stuck in Chiaki's mind ever since she saw it. "Oh, that? That's the Big Bang Monokuma. Towa-kun's controlling it. He said it was the adults' 'last hope', or something like that. From the looks of it, he's gonna go and bring down Towa Hills. Can't tell you anything more than that."

"...I see. Thanks for the info."

"Happy to help. You've probably got some important mission to carry out, right? I'll leave you alone then. Good luck, Nana." And with that, Hiroko walked back into the crowd. She seemed nice. ..Hmm, but... I feel like I've heard the name 'Hagakure' somewhere before... Chiaki decided to head into Towa Hills and see what was going on.

As it turns out, she never made it into the building. The Big Bang Monokuma had begun attacking it before she could get to the entrance and she had to retreat. It appeared to be held back by something though, as eventually it's neck exploded and the head flew up, eventually landing on it's original spot upside down. The giant robot fell backwards, crushing all the smaller Monokumas swarmed at it's feet.

Now that the assault was over, Chiaki cautiously approached the entrance again and snuck her way inside. Thanks to someone -presumably Toko and Komaru- having dealt with all the obstacles and enemies in the building, she could ride the elevator up to the top floor immediately. She went through several rooms and short stairs before arriving at a white room filled with debris.

Inside the room, she saw Nagito attempting to lift the debris from over a small, green-haired girl's body. She walked inside, drawing the attention to her. "...Ah, Nanami-san...? What are you doing here...? Did you come to help Komaru Naegi? You are much too late I'm afraid..." Nagito was out of breath, clearly exhausted from moving the bits of debris away. "Oh, it's you. The Future Foundation lady. Are you here to deal with Monaca?" Oh, so she's 'Monaca'.

"...No, I just saw the big Monokuma and wondered why it was attacking this place. Since it was defeated, I decided to go inside to check it out. ...What are you doing here, Komaeda-kun?" She could see he wanted to help Monaca out, though she doesn't know why. "...Ah, That... Well, I had... planned to leave once the... Big Bang Monokuma showed up, but I... changed my mind and... decided to see things through to the end." He paused several times to breathe. "And I'm... glad I did. It would be... such a shame to let... Monaca-san's potential go to waste... all because her plan didn't work."

"Hey, can you hurry up? It hurts being crushed by debris. Monaca's tired of being unable to go anywhere." Monaca started pouting at Nagito pausing his attempts at getting her out, ignoring the fact he clearly haven't made much headway and already looked ready to collapse. "Ah, my apologies, Monaca-san. I will get... back to helping you." Not wanting to see him actually collapse, Chiaki started to help without a word. "Nanami-san...?"

"Don't talk. You're pretty tired already, right? I don't want you to collapse, so I'll help."

"...You're so weird, Big Sis. You do know who I am, right? It'd be much better for you if I just died." Chiaki ignored her, leading Monaca to spout an endless stream of comments about of how weird and stupid she is at her. "...I really wish you'd just kill me. I already failed, there's no reason for me to live anymore." That almost got a reply from Chiaki, but she continued to stay silent.

By the time the debris was moved enough for her to be lifted up, Monaca had talked herself into exhaustion and had fallen asleep. Nagito didn't look much better off. "...Hey hey, what are we gonna do about her? It sounds like you've got plans for her, but maybe we should just take her home with us instead?" She didn't voice it, but the real reason she wanted to bring Monaca home was to make sure Nagito didn't use her for any other despair-inducing plans. ...Well, one of the reasons.

"...Is really that a good idea...? What about... Naegi-kun and Kirigiri-san...? They won't... be happy about it. Especially not... Naegi-kun..." He had a point, but Chiaki was stubborn. "We could always just say it's to keep an eye on her. And besides, they were fine with letting you and Kamukura-kun stay. I think we'll be fine." Naegi-kun will probably be a bit upset, but he'll understand... maybe. She's just a child, after all. "...For now, let's get out of here. I'm tired of this place. I wanna head home already..." She rubbed her eye sleepily.

"...Alright, let us be on our way, then." Nagito laid Monaca on the ground before turning around and putting her arms over her shoulders and put his hands under her legs, carrying her piggy-back style. Without another word, they left the building and started walking on a road away from the crowd of adults.

As they were walking, Chiaki noticed Nagito staggering, his still bleeding thighs making his legs even weaker when combined with the exhaustion. "Komaeda-kun-"

Before she could finish her sentence, he fell forward and she rushed to hold him up. "Komaeda-kun! L-let's take a break. You're in no state to walk right now. I'll... take care of Monaca-san too, okay?" Completely ignoring her, Nagito started to blush and looked forward with a tired, but no less lovesick expression.

"Kamukura-sama..." Kamukura-kun? At that, she followed his line of sight and saw Izuru walking towards them, rolling a trolley with Shirokuma and a pitch black Monokuma's heads on it. "...Kamukura-kun? What are you doing here? I thought you were still home..." He stopped right in front of them, letting go of the trolley and placing Nagito inside. Afterwards, he picked up the sleeping Monaca and placed her on Nagito's lap. The girl instinctively curled up into his chest.

Finally, Izuru turned back to Chiaki and said the first thing she'd heard from him in a while. "Let's go. There is no reason to stay here anymore."

"...Alright, let's go." She started walking alongside him. Some time after, the black Monokuma head started talking, "Yo man, where the hell you takin' us now!? You 'n' that big boobed babe gonna kidnap us and torture is with watching ya get it on or something? Aren't you a massive pervert! Bet this BDSM bastard over here will enjoy it though!"

Chiaki hated this guy already. She decided to just ignore him. Clearly, the bear didn't like the lack of response, "HEEEEY, are you guys ignorin' me!? Don't ya know I'm a total-"

"Please, shut up. You will wake Monaca-san." Nagito was uncharacteristically stern. Guess Chiaki's not the only one who can't stand the Monokuma's chattering. "Oh Kurokuma, please try to be quiet! Little Monaca-chan needs her sleep to grow big and strong!" Shirokuma -who Chiaki had thought wasn't functioning anymore- started gently reprimanding the other robot head. "She must be so tired after everything that happened... not to mention all the rubble she got crushed by! Poor girl... it must hurt a lot..." Nagito was clearly done with their bantering. "You shut up too. I hate you both."

"M-me too!?"

"AHAHAHAHA! Looks like this bottom has a back-bone after all! Bet you're the kind of servant who acts all sweet and obedient during the day, but at night YOU'RE the one giving orders! AHAHAHAHA ISN'T THAT JUST HILARIOUS!? Imagine THIS GUY giving orders! AHAHAHA-"

Izuru briefly stopped walking to smash his hands into Shirokuma and Kurokuma's heads and ripped something small enough that Chiaki couldn't see it clenched in his fists. As the two bears shut down, Izuru put the parts into his pockets. Apparently having woken up some time during the commotion, Monaca spoke up, "...Where are we going?"

"Home."

"...That's not an answer, Mr. stalker."

Izuru lifted a brow. "...Stalker? Who, exactly, do you believe I would be stalking?" At that, Monaca cocked her head with an innocent expression. "Who are you stalking? Monaca thinks it's obvious. Mr. Stalker is stalking Big Sis and Mr. Servant, of course! The Monokuma kids have seen you following them around all the time. Ever since Big Sis came to Towa City, you've been following her and Mr. Servant around."

"I am observing them to ensure their safety. 'Stalking' implies malicious intent or an obsession with the people in question, neither of which I have." He continued to deny the accusation, but did confirm he was, in fact, following them around. "...Anyway, tell me where you're taking me, Mr. Stalker. I don't trust you, so I want to make sure you're not taking Monaca and Mr. Servant to some dangerous place. Monaca can't protect herself, and Mr. Servant is weak and useless."

Noticing Izuru had decided to ignore her, Chiaki replied instead, "...We're going to our apartment. There's only us and two other Future Foundation members there, so it's pretty safe. The only problem we've had is Komaeda-kun's occasional episodes. ...Mr. Stalker usually deals with it before it can get too bad, though." Izuru scoffed.

"...I don't like that Mr. Stalker has that much power over Mr. Servant. He's MY servant, not yours." Monaca pouted, a far too childish expression for the implications behind her words. "It's okay. I won't let Mr. Stalker do anything, I promise." The girl squinted at Chiaki, thinking over her words. In the end, she nodded on affirmation. "Hm, okay! If Big Sis promises to watch Mr. Stalker, then I guess it's okay."

A yawn forced it's way out of Monaca's mouth. "...Mmm I'm tired. Monaca's gonna take a nap. Good night, Big sis." Immediately after she spoke, she curled back up into Nagito's chest and promptly fell asleep.

Chiaki gave a small smile, and walked home with a new addition to their odd 'family'.

Kyan Reki (Skaters backstage)

Kyan Reki S Name: Reki Sign: Leo Birthday: August 8th Height: 174cm (5'8) Weight: 57kg (125lbs) Blood type: O

Second year high school student. He really loves skateboarding and recently he's been obsessed with "S". He knows everything about skateboarding, he makes and modifies his own boards, and has mechanical skills.

There's only one reason to skate, isn't there? Because it's fun!

Huge skate lover Whether he's sleeping or awake, the only thing in his head is skating. He's impulsive, and if you insult the skateboarding that he loves, or his skateboarding friends, he'll get pissed off. He cares more about skating than anyone else and has more fun than anyone else doing it.

Mechanic Star Reki He makes all his own boards. He made a handmade board for Langa designed to skate more like a snowboard, added a toe grip for his feet, and added revolving trucks. He also does his own board art and drew the art for Langa and his own boards.

The past best friend Reki started skating because his friend asked him to. However, that friend got severely injured and so he quit skating. Reki is still deeply hurt by that event.

Director Utsumi Comment Ever since the beginning I wanted to make Reki into a typical shonen manga style main character, and I discussed it with everyone during the writing meetings. Since I wanted double protagonists, I wanted one to be bright and lively, and the other to be the opposite since I thought the balance between them would be interesting. I think that Reki is really easy for the viewers to identify with and so he's the most easy to understand character. Chiba Michinori-san designed him, but it seems the art staff had a hard time drawing his unbalanced hair. Honestly, even when we entered the revision stage I remember having a hard time since I couldn't get his hair right... Even though Chiba-san was able to draw it so easily (lol). Also his eyes are slanted upward but at the beginning people kept making them slated down and so he had to get revised even more than Langa. But even still everyone was always saying that they had fun drawing Reki.

Character Designer Chiba Michinori Comment I though about the balance and Reki and Langa together and thought of them as one. Director Utsumi (Hiroko) wanted his hair style to be like from a manga, so it's easy to see how his design came about. I also came up with a short haired version, but Director Utsumi requested we make how it is now. Reki's character color is red but when they said "that red head" while we were making it I was surprised and thought "He really has red hair!?" (lol). You might not have noticed but Reki has a bit of a sloppy personality and so his bandana is slanted, his hoodie strings and the cuffs of his pants on his summer uniform are uneven.

Colorist Gotou Yukari Comment Director Utsumi is the one who requested his hair to be red. I tried out a darker red and a red with a slight blue tint but I ended up going with a bright, slightly orange red, and his skin is a normal healthy color. Since I wanted his hoodie to be a yellow that would stand out, so the saturation of it is set to the point where if it were set any higher it would look like it was glowing. We were also concerned with his underwear that would peak out when his hoodie rolled up, his belt, and his socks and things like that. His casual clothing is very colorful so I was very concerned about making it so all of them didn't clash. Reki's school uniform was also going to be his costume at the "S" so I wanted to make sure it would stand out at Crazy Rock too. Since Reki was the first one designed and would determine the direction we went with everything else in the series we took a long time to decide on that one color.

Question: What motivated you to even begin doing all this, all the Hope Universe?

(人◕ω◕) Interesting question. Well I suppose it really boils down to three things really. @wesst1 story "Everyday life with ultimate girls" which you can find here. @pyropsychiccollector story "Danganronpa: Another IF" which you can find here

And the fact that generally speaking, Makoto is not only the most unpopular main character but also he is the only one that actually inspires me. Right. So Why did I bring up Wesst1 and pyro? Well because both of them helped me get into exploring Makoto with others. See, I used to be a bog standard Naegiri & Naekusaba fan. Didn't really think much of shipping the egg with others. But reading Danganronpa: Another IF by @pyropsychiccollector really sold me on NaeCeles around Chapter 3 and Naezono throughout the story From there I became obsessed with other types of shipping and pyro will tell you I quickly reached out to him and well here we are XP But in the early days we were also talking about NaeChisa when there were like 1-3 images out there on the entire internet. And yeah...I quickly fell down the rabbit hole. NaeHina, Naekawa, NaeJunko, Naezono and after reading @wesst1 story, my mind blew wide open. The way he set it up by having Makoto interact with OTHER Girls from GD and V3....Yeah man that shit was revolutionary. Suddenly I had a reference point to expand beyond my initial Class 78 girls with the egg. From here on, I just wanted to explore shipping Makoto with others. Sonia, Akane, Mikan, Ibuki (@pyropsychiccollector she's still an agent of chaos), Miu, Kaede, Angie, Tenko, etc And well funnily enough I started getting into Koikatsu around this time. Same program I use for all my 3D stuff. See, on a site called Pixiv there was this guy called Demco. He made all the main series characters sans Ruruka and Seiko. But there was a rub. He was SUPER paranoid? Controlling? XDDD @notpistol knows what I'm talking about. He basically had this rule where you couldn't share his danganronpa characters at all or he'll private everything and you wouldn't get access to future updates of a character as he improved the designs. Several times though they would get leaked and he eventually went nuclear and just stopped making cards and took down all his links. Around this time I had to quite literally look at pictures he would still post and figure out the new changes and looks and replicate it myself (with limited success). So Demco became this new....goal or rival to beat XDDD I would tell @pyropsychiccollector about Demco's madness but brilliance and my desire to succeed him.

So I practiced and developed my skills. Not long after I began making my own characters Demco never made like Miaya and the Student Council~ Those were my first ever characters I made that nobody did. @notpistol also started making the spin-off/LN/Manga characters like Sayaka's idol group or Yui and Hiroko! So between the two of us and I forgot to add but there was a lad who made Seiko and Ruruka and did a GOD tier job with the early designs. Also, someone made Danganronpa Another cards but they....weren't that good XDDD. But yeah between me and @notpistol we basically started making every danganronpa character that had an image. I think though what made me really make the Hope universe was....okay. I finally became a solid creator. I could replicate/improve upon Demco's cards and I made new characters. But there wasn't a grand plan or anything. I was just using them for shipping stuff and my goal at the time was to show Makoto x <Insert Girl> art and family stuff.

A NaeAngie family picture or Makoto with Tsumugi and their child or NaeCeles Family or Naekawa wedding. Stuff like that. My earliest Koikatsu work was in fact Makoto x Chisa and soon after Makoto x Celeste and Makoto x Junko. You seen the kids and stuff. However once I saw DRA1 and SDRA2 I decided.....I can make all of this work. XDDDD I became unapologetically greedy and decided to make a huge harem and @wesst1 already showed me it can be done! So I decided to incorporate fangan stuff but I didn't have an overall plan or story or anything. it was more or less "Hey I'm a huge Makoto harem shipper, here's this big family" But as I decided to add more characters and what not, I began figuring out who goes where. And creating the initial groundwork for classes. It wasn't until the brilliant @putaindeplagieur contacted me and made this kickass Excel spreadsheet listing all the classes, who teaches the classes and yeah we worked together for months and I pitched him the idea of opening up multiple schools and we (Mostly him) organized that shit! XDDDDD Which led to the Hope Universe we have. I wanted a corner of the internet where we get some wholesome fluff and family stuff with the egg. No deaths, no murder porn, none of that stuff. And I needed it because life fucking sucks here in America especially as a minority so it became this outlet for me. In my single-minded devotion to this project, I created something special with the help of @putaindeplagieur, @pyropsychiccollector and @notpistol Eventually though as of late last year I wanted to add some story to all of this. Me and @pyropsychiccollector have been spitballing idea's for skits and stuff and yeah. Laughing Man Saga for the family 15 years post Class 78 Graduation and I'm hard at work for the Kamukura/Tragedy story while they're at Hope's Peak.

Bit of a long read and stuff but yeah...I started this all not just to make makoto shippers happy and stuff but because It's therapeutic for me and maybe a few others. I know @makoto-naegi-stud-and-friends has also been making some Naegi centered stuff! I guess also another big part of WHY I made the hope universe is to give characters a better life. Junko is doing much better, Kanade, Ruruka, Seiko, Natsumi, Kotoko, Tsumugi, etc. I just wanted to take all these characters and put them in a better world (not a perfect one) free from all that despair and stuff. Real life is already fuckin miserable here with constant mass shootings, the far right losing their minds over LGBTQIA stuff and corporations turning America into Neo-Feudalism slowly over time. What do I gain from seeing so much darkness in DRA1/SDRA2? And yeah I also wanted to have characters from these fangans get a chance to be happy and stuff since projects either get canceled or we run into the initial dilemma of so much dark and depressing shit.

Dunno. For me at least, I need fluff since I'm always exposed to so much despair in real life. XDDD And I hope you all enjoy the stuff I do~

PROFILE

Animation director, producer, and animator. She directed the Free! series and BANANA FISH, and was in charge of production on K-On!, Nichijou (My Ordinary Life, Hyouka, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, and others.

—First, how are you feeling now that episode 12 has finished airing?

Right after it aired, I felt like crazily dancing flamenco, but now enough time has passed that I've calmed down. Still, I keep thinking "We really finished it~!"

—Do you have any favorite episodes, or scenes that left an impression on you?

Personally, I naturally have the strongest attachment to episode 1, which I storyboarded and produced. At that point, I was fumbling through without being certain exactly what this work was going to be. The ending gave me a lot of trouble, but the image of "white snow falling in Okinawa" surpassed my expectations, and is my favorite part even now. That image is like a snow crystal formed by the professionals in each department, which can only exist through animation.

—Can you tell us about the appeal of skateboarding we felt in the series?

It made me feel like "skating is so cool!" all over again! I was convinced it was a theme that could really shine in anime, and I only felt that even more as the series continued. That heart-pounding feeling, the speed, the coolness of tricks. I'm glad I was able to portray the appeal of skating through anime.

—Are there any secret stories from production you can reveal to us now?

ADAM and Langa's white-hot BEEF scene in the last episode. At first, Kobayashi-san played Langa with a powerful air, like he was fighting, but the sound director, Masafumi Mima-san, directed him, "Do it like he's cuddling up to ADAM", and made me feel, "Yes, yes! That's exactly it!"... but after that, we went with intense background music that would suit an action scene, so the lack of tension in his voice ended up not matching up... so in the end Langa's voice was revised to sound like he was fighting again. I wanted everyone to hear the incredibly rare Langa cuddling up to ADAM...!

—Were there any episodes or behind-the-scenes developments that you hated to cut? (lit. "cut while crying")

In the original scenario, during the part of the plot where Langa is rapidly becoming obsessed with ADAM, there was a part where ADAM was going to carry Langa off to his vacation house, and Reki was going to be shocked to see the two of them having fun skating together, but... I felt like that wasn't the right direction, so I had the plot changed to what it is now. There are a lot of scenes where I wonder how things would have turned out if they'd been in the original work. If Kikuchi's "yes!" in the last episode was "woof!"... for example. (laughter)

—What were your impressions of the casting and the voice actors' performances?

Everyone played their unique characters with such splendid individuality, and conveyed the characters' charm in a way that you can't with just visuals, so I enjoyed the recording for every episode. The other day I went back to listen to Hatanaka-san and Kobayashi-san's audition tapes again, and Reki hasn't changed at all! Hatanaka-san never wavers~! I admired that. Meanwhile Langa was like a completely different person! (laughter) Langa in the audition was sharp and sarcastic, and gave off an ice-like impression, but he's changed so much up until now~! It was really moving to hear that. Now, he's like powder snow. (laughter)

—With production, props, character designs and the like, was there anything you were especially particular about?

Speaking generally, a main facet of production is pacing. It's a really important part of film-making; if the pacing is good, the work flows smoothly, and when you're watching, before you know it, it's over! I like series with that kind of good tempo to them, so I paid attention to every episode to make sure that the pacing felt good. As for the character designs, I was careful to make sure they were very unique, but also balanced. And then there's the difference in their physiques!

—If "S" opened in the real world, what part do you think you'd be most interested in?

I want to say, "Hey, have a BEEF with me!" and "Crush them with that hug, ADAM—!!"

—Can you send a message to all the fans who loved SK8 the Infinity?

Thank you... for loving SK8!* (with a blank expression) When I was working on the original work, there were times when I was BEEFing with production that made me lose the highlights in my eyes in real life, but I was able to get through it thanks to everyone's love. As their creator, I couldn't be happier that people love Reki and Langa and the others in so many different ways. The original series has ended, but their daily lives will surely continue, and we'd be happy if you could watch the series over and over again while imagining them like that. ☆ Thank you so much for watching SK8 the Infinity!

When I first bought my kantele, someone told me as a joke to play Säkkijärven polkka. It's originally an accordion piece, and definitely not something you would play with only 5 strings. I gave it a laugh, and later on checked just for fun if there were any videos of it on youtube (played with bigger kanteles, of course). And to my astonishment, if found someone playing it with 5 strings! Of course, a simplified arrangement, but still.

That someone was Japanese kantele player Hiroko Ara. And as I had gotten my kantele in spring 2020, during Covid, I started playing it on my own, and I learned a lot from her videos. Perhaps Säkkijärven polkka wasn't the most sensible thing to choose as the first piece to learn on kantele, but hey, it was fun. ^^

Today I came home from Sommelo ethno music festival where I took part in a kantele class. And there I learned that Hiroko Ara passed away in May. I hadn't thought about her much lately, but somehow it feels like I've lost my very first kantele teacher, even though I never met her.

And one silly thing... I recently shared that crazy Girls und Panzer kantele video. Apparently she was the one playing the kantele there. Well, who else, I guess? ^^ That piece, btw, is Säkkijärven polkka too.

Rest in peace, Hiroko-san. And thank you for your music.

9. A kiss to the eyelid

He tried not to think about it – or at least that was what Keisuke would often tell himself, always his efforts to divide his life and emotions strictly per the blocks upon his calendar a little blurrier than he would prefer. But today with the warmer weather, his scars were trying to hurt yet again, feeling tight and sore, sensitive to the fabric of his clothing on some spots, numb on other spots. Of course that included the ones that ran across the right side of his face as well, and he considered it a small blessing that usually his injured eye wouldn't hurt.

Normally was he a rather shy and serious individual, but when he would fall more quiet than usual, when he seemed more withdrawn and not even engaging well with the world around him, it was a sign that something more was within his mind than the several worries he already had on his plate. A hand vaguely pressed at his side, his arm, his thigh, what was easily within reach, the gesture absent as if lost in thought, sorting through his tasks for the day, gauging the amount of time each would take for the hours remaining before midnight. Would he be lucky to grab more than 4 or 5 hours of sleep? Should he skip out on his training tonight and just focus on studying since he was already sore, or should he go ahead and train since the pain was already present?

Keisuke blinked hard at the delivery of his given name, tone uncompromising yet voice gentle. The president snapped him out of his spiral of thoughts, and though it was subtle, he could see within the man's steely blue gaze that he was a touch concerned. It was easy to confuse a steady and intense stare like what Toichiro had for a cold and impatient glare, but the young vigilante felt he had enough experience at reading the other man to differentiate the subtleties in those eyes.

" Sorry, sir... " he began, a little surprised at his own voice and how tired it sounded. " It's just my scars. They're not happy today. I'll be fine, though. " Always ( always ! ) would he dismiss himself without even realizing it, all for the sake of trying not to worry others. But just as consistently, Toichiro had proven himself far more perceptive than that, and the man had drawn near, if only to witness the younger drop his head gently.

A hand grasped his sharp chin gently to tilt his face upward, Keisuke glancing to the president's gaze, next feeling the man's other hand take his own. They didn't always talk; Toichiro was the one gifted with just knowing what to say and when, part of his immense charisma that had drawn such impressive numbers to Claw in the first place. And that was something he appreciated about the man, that he didn't require Keisuke to say much. Toichiro had leaned in, pressing a gentle kiss to the eyelid of his right eye, lips softly pressed to scar tissue that lingered there as well.

Ever since the scene where Rin's hair fluttered, Rin has had overwhelming heroine energy

—At a stage greeting, Suzuki-san, you talked about how "Rin has overwhelming heroine energy" but you ran out of time so you didn't get to talk about it much. So in what ways does Rin have heroine energy?

Suzuki: That did happen didn’t it? (lol). (Miyano) Mamoru is the one

who brought up the heroine part. In the beginning, Rin is pretty standoffish but as his pent of feelings started to dissipate, he became more and more honest. Mamoru, as Rin, peeled off all the layers of his cool demeanor, but when I heard Rin’s voice like that, I thought “So Rin can be this honest.” When there was the scene where Rin's hair fluttered in season 1, the director, Utsumi (Hiroko), said “here he’s the heroine!” too, so I think that was some sort of trigger, but I also said at the time “this makes him the official heroine.” And since then (Miyano) Mamoru has been playing him like that more and more in the story. This time, in the night pool scene, when they pull Makoto into the pool, (according to the script) Rin was actually supposed to say “Shut up” but he changed that to “sorry.”

—He changed it at the recording stage?

Suzuki: That’s right. He thought if Rin says “shut up” here, “it would be weird to say ‘Shut up’ here even though they pulled you into the pool,” so he thought that he should be more honest and say “Sorry” in order to show how Rin has changed. He’d put in all those sort of details, he approached and nuanced things more and more as if he were Rin himself, and it was just like he was returning to the childhood Rin. That just made me feel like “Ahhh, he’s really playing the heroine!” (lol). Now that heroine energy that we’d only seen in that one shot where Rin’s hair was fluttering, in the night pool scene it’s just gushing out of him.

—It’s gushing out, huh? (lol).

Suzuki: It’s gushing out (lol). Even in the line when Rin found Haruka at the night pool, called Makoto, and said “Makoto, I found him” I thought you’re saying it with that much feeling!? (lol). With how much you could feel the worry and the feelings he had for Haruka I thought “just how much are you returning him to childhood?”

—Rin has become really soft.

Suzuki: And along with that he’s become more and more honest and just looking at him makes me think he’s so cute. And as (Miyano) Mamoru was standing in front of the mic becoming more and more honest, his eyes were shining. I thought "I've never seen Miyano Mamoru like this before" as we were recording it.

—Makoto and Rin don’t talk that often, but even when it’s brief it leaves a deep impression.

Suzuki: When Makoto and Rin talk when the others aren’t around, Makoto depends on Rin as a friend and Rin tells Makoto things he normally would never say, doesn’t he?

—That’s true, they have a bit of a different feeling between them than with the others.

Suzuki: I think that Makoto and Rin’s relationship, even compared to the others in Free!, is a bit special. They’re friends, but they’re not just supporting each other, and they’re not rivals competing against each other. They can converse more like equals.
