From the classroom: a book owned by at least three prominent classicists and folklorists, inscribed by Heinrich Schliemann in Greek "To the lover of the arts Mr. [Erik Barren or Henry Warren?] as a memorial. 1874. Schliemann," and later from Samuel Preston Bayard to Albert Bates Lord. Bayard was a renowned folklorist and musicologist, and Lord's work was foundational in the study of oral traditions such as the Iliad and Odyssey. RARE DF220 .S34 1869

On display at the National Archaeological Museum (Athens, Greece)

Micene
Dopo le surreali Meteore, il viaggio continua con la visita di alcuni luoghi legati alla Grecia classica. Il primo è Micene, luogo decantato da Omero nei suoi poemi epici e Patrimonio Unesco.
Secondo la leggenda, la nascita di Micene avvenne grazie a Perseo, figlio di Danae e Zeus, che chiese aiuto ad un Ciclope per erigere la cittadella fortificata (da qui l’attributo “ciclopiche” riferito alle mura che la circondano). Il prestigio di Micene è legato a quello di Agamennone, il re più famoso che la città abbia mai avuto, nonché il capo indiscusso di tutta la Grecia Antica dopo il trionfo nella Guerra di Troia. Le gesta di Agamennone furono narrate nell’Iliade di Omero e, proprio per via della passione per i poemi omerici, Heinrich Schliemann, un archeologo tedesco, si mise alla ricerca della «Micene ricca d’oro» tanto decantata fino a quando, nell’Ottocento, non ne scoprì per primo le rovine.
La visita ai resti della fortezza inizia con l’attraversamento della straordinaria Porta dei Leoni.
Si procedere poi con le gigantesche mura ciclopiche, le tombe reali ed il Palazzo di Agamennone.
Non dimenticate di guardarvi intorno perché grazie alla posizione elevata potrete godere del bel panorama.
A circa 400 metri dalla cittadella sorge un altro importante sito archeologico, il Tesoro di Atreo, noto anche come Tomba di Agamennone.
Per meglio comprendere la storia del sito e del suo ritrovamento è possibile visitare il Museo dell’Antica Micene che espone un gran numero di reperti, compresa una copia della famosa Maschera di Agamennone.

Schliemann's Troy—A Poem
This is a poem I wrote and wanted to share. I hope you like it!
Schliemann’s Troy
Every day I forget another piece of you,
And someday—sooner than I realize—
The archaeologist of my mind,
Will make a grave mistake during the excavation
Of my memories of you,
And with a slip of the hand—or a much larger error
With some dangerous explosives meant to open up a hillside—
You will disappear completely, in a cloud of dust and shrapnel.
Years later, when someone gets the proper permits, they won’t see you anywhere,
Rather just the despairing destruction of history,
And me, desperately clutching the pieces left behind,
Trying to put the memories of you back together.
Just like Heinrich Schliemann’s Troy,
People will stare at the pieces, wondering what went wrong—
Only poetry to remind them of your former glory.
