249 - Love is Strange
Tumblr media
Ahead of this week's release of Ira Sachs' Passages, we're discussing perhaps Sachs' most lauded film, 2014's Love is Strange. The film stars John Lithgow and Alfred Molina as a newly married couple forced to live apart in New York City when one of them is fired from his Catholic school job for being gay. Charting the frustrating nuances of cohabitation and the unexamined financial hardships of city life, the film is a quiet wonder filled with humane performances, including Marisa Tomei as part of the couple's social circle. Praised at Sundance and in its late summer release, the film managed to stay in conversation due to several Independent Spirit nominations, but was shut out by Oscar.
This episode, we discuss Sachs' underappreciated filmography and Molina's career rise as a trustworthy supporting player. We also discuss Lithgow's consecutive Supporting Actor nominations in the 1980s, the film's release in the year before the Obergefell ruling, and Sony Pictures Classics' busy 2014.
Topics also include Best Grownup Love Story, the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, and Asteroid City.

I saw “Jules” - a new movie starring Ben Kingsley. It’s about an old man who discovers a flying saucer has crashed in his back yard. He tries to report it to 911 and even the town council, but no one believes him. Even before this, he has had issues with memory loss, and being one of the town’s old cranks. So that makes it difficult to get anyone to believe him.
Kingsley’s character befriends the alien that emerges from the ship. Soon two other town seniors learn about the UFO (and they argue whether to call him Jules or Gary).
The alien doesn’t talk, one of the women (played by Jane Curtin) thinks he has kind, understanding eyes. All three of them find themselves telling the alien stories about their lives, and opening up to him in a way that they can’t with anyone else.
But this isn’t a big scifi space invasion movie. The setup is to allow for an exploration of getting old, loss of independence, and friendship.
All three main actors do a great job. I particularly liked Harriet Sansom Harris. She doesn’t have a household name but you’ll recognize her from her many film and TV roles. In one scene she tells Jules about her lesbian daughter, who she openly accepts, but feels forgotten. It was very touching. As was a later scene when she thanks Jules for saving her life.
Oh! I forgot to mention… this wouldn’t be a scifi movie if the alien didn’t have some unusual powers. And you’ll never guess what Jules needs to power his ship!
You may not catch “Jules” in a theater, but if you notice it on a streaming service, check it out.

The Bad Cinderella cast announcement ruined my entire day. Y’all, I cannot handle this, and I refuse to like anything ALW has ever touched, but by god, if the casting choices for the MILFs in this show were not personally catering to me specifically.

[Werewolf by Night]
Spoilers!
.
.
.
1. I love this callback.
Tumblr media
2. There was some Latin in the show and I wondered what they translated to, so I got these. There was a bit more on the walls but I didn’t bother with those 😅. But I do love the usage of Latin to up the ante on the mystery and creepy factor.

3. It was so funny when Jack just could not get the thing to stay on the wall because it kept falling off and he just plopped the thing on the ledge in a last act of desperation 😂
