I knew Dorothy Dunnett was a crazy crazy author from page 1 of Game of Kings, like that woman wrote what she wanted to write, cared not at all about hand holding or dumbing down her story to make it more palatable (or even marketable), and was of the "just read the books babes 🫰" approach when asked by fans to confirm or deny stuff that wasn't super clear in the story. Love her for that!

But something that makes it so much clearer to me that she was, very much, a crazy (compliment) author is the way she writes gelis in Scales of Gold. Abrasive female characters have never been popular, but to make the main female character in your series, in the first book where she has a major role, so unpleasant... and specifically unpleasant towards the main male character? I think it's so brave tbh! The ending of this book is so cruel, and it's a stinging slap in the face for both Nicholas and the reader. But Dorothy was still like "yeah well Nicholas is crazy in love with her, he doesn't want anyone else, that's the love of his life" and I don't even think it had anything to do with trusting her readers to see the vision and that they would enjoy the character development and slow burn of Nicholas and Gelis learning to love each other like normal people lol. Like that's the story she wanted to tell and that's how she wanted to tell it. And I'm sure Gelis had a lot of haters back in the day (and now), but I genuinely don't think Dorothy gave a fuck. Would have loved to discuss this over a bottle of scotch though

-Jing Yuan SFW alphabet-

A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)

Jing Yuan is a pretty affectionate man. He shows his affection with words and plenty of kisses. He does this thing where he puts his hand on the back of your neck when he kisses your cheek that’s…real sweet.

B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?)

I imagine you both work in the same place when your friendship starts. He’s a very patient, but firm friend…offering you good advice that he expects you to take.

C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)

Yes, he loves to cuddle! He typically wraps his arms around your waist and buries his face into the back of your head when you’re cuddling in bed. Otherwise he’s always got a hand on you, typically on the small of your back, holding you close to him. He’s a very casual cuddler, not even mentioning it.

D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)

I think in a perfect world, Jing Yuan would like to settle down, but he does have his duties as General… He can cook and clean decently enough.

E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)

I think Jing Yuan would be direct and get straight to the point if he knew it wasn’t going to work out between you. He doesn’t want to hurt you, and he’d be content if you were still friends, but if that’s not possible then he’ll probably block your number.

F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?)

Jing Yuan’s feelings toward commitment are really complicated, but to put it simply, yes, he’d like to get married someday. After he’s Certain he’s found the right partner. I could see him getting married after a year or two if he’s Certain you’re the one…so pretty quickly.

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally)

Physically? Very gentle. He’d never want to hurt you, even though his hands are rough and calloused from his job as a general, they are soft and gentle when they’re on you. He’s tougher emotionally though. He wants a partner who can stand on their own two feet, and he’ll test you by being a little harder emotionally. Not emotionally abusive or anything, but he doesn’t bend to your every wish.

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)

He finds hugs okay. He doesn’t hug you too often though. His hugs are warm, and he’s good at not holding you too tightly.

I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?)

I think Jing Yuan would say it pretty fast, hehe. We’re talking maybe third or fourth date. IF he’s convinced you’re the one.

J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)

He doesn’t get that jealous, even when people are blatantly talking about you in a way that Should make him jealous. He’s very secure in his relationship with you.

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)

His kisses are HEAVEN. Warm and soft and gentle yet firm… He likes to kiss your forehead or the back of your hands, and he likes it when you kiss his hair or his lips.

L = Little ones (How are they around children?)

Jing Yuan is pretty good around children, and he understands them pretty well (see his comments on Yanqing.) But he’s also firm around them. He’s not one to spoil a child, haha.

M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)

Jing Yuan isn’t a morning person, but he still has to get up early for work, so if you Feel like getting up really early then your morning is spent helping him get ready for work.

N = Night (How are nights spent with them?)

Nights are a little more free. He prefers to spend his time doing Stuff with you, whether that’s date nights or reading in bed together. As long as it’s with you.

O = Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?)

I’m kinda stuck on this one, because I could see it both ways, but for the sake of it, I could see him hitting you with all his baggage all at once, so that he doesn’t have to concern himself with thinking about what he has or hasn’t told you about himself, though it takes him some time before he’s able to open up.

P = Patience (How easily angered are they?)

He’s a fairly patient man, but he does have his moments. (See now is not the time, lol) but overall he’s pretty patient, especially when it comes to you.

Q = Quizzes (How much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?)

He remembers a fair bit about you, but he doesn’t remember everything, haha. He remembers the important stuff thankfully.

R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?)

Definitely the day he proposed. The day you said yes was the happiest day of his life, and he’ll treasure that moment forever.

S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?)

He’s not extremely protective, but when he is being protective, he usually places his hand on the small of your back in public. That’s how you know you’re Definitely safe. He doesn’t need your protection, but he does think your efforts are cute.

T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?)

Dates are usually pretty casual, anniversaries are a big deal, he likes to hold parties for anniversaries. He doesn’t get you gifts often but when he does he puts a fair amount of thought into it, and when it comes to everyday tasks he doesn’t try Particularly hard but he’ll still do them.

U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?)

Jing Yuan has a bad habit of dismissing your feelings and not taking you seriously all the time…it’s hurtful.

V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)

Concerned enough to make sure he’s presentable!

W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?)

Yes, but he combats this by filling that incompleteness with work.

X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them.)

Hmm Jing Yuan is a fantastic singer. Sometimes he sings to you at night and it puts you right at ease.

Y = Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?)

He Prefers someone who likes children, or at least likes Yanqing. And he doesn’t like violent people.

Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habits of theirs?)

Jing Yuan can fall asleep very quickly, but on the days where he’s struggling to sleep, he tosses and turns a Lot. It’s pretty surprising that the Dozing General can be so restless. But once he’s asleep he is OUT and usually it takes more than his alarm clock for him to wake up.

So I watched Alizee's review of the House of Night serie so far. I remember reading the first 4 when I was like, 15, but didnt stick because of (looking back) the pacing. It's interesting to know how the story unfolds.
