Gift for @rinnysega. The regency au seems like perfect place for a dumb bodice ripper romance cover
Also super hard to make Gus look like Gus without the mustache and ponytail, but I am a slave to accuracy in historical character design

Elena and Gus: Part 4 GOSSIP
The next day, The father and son pair of Lord Jorge Pinheiro and Lord Gustavo were poring over the shipping and delivery notices of shale and clay. The boredom of it all, the combined effects of the heat and din of the brick factory caused Gustavo’s mind to wander.
‘Come back and play the pianoforte at anytime,’ Gustavo thought back to meeting with the Gaitans, riddled with consternation. ‘Why the hell did he offer that?’. They owned a pianforte, of course they did. They were wealthy, with a daughter whose charm to her favor was based around it. She spoke of the children she taught at their home. Elena Gaitan didn’t NEED to borrow the pianoforte. But perhaps, if Gus was being honest with himself. He WANTED to hear her sing and play again. ‘I should adjust my thinking. She is not a trap, but a siren ready to dash me on the rocks’, he smiled. But any thoughts he entertained of taking his place in society and being a lord, marrying as his parents wanted. Had evaporated by the afternoon the next day. He was once again resolute in the idea, that he should just run.
His thoughts were dragged back to the present when Jorge rapped his son’s fingers sternly with his pointing stick used to show trade lanes on the map on the table in front of them.  "Pay attention Gustavo, this will be your business, you will need to track manifests". Jorge barked, before turning to an employee informing them of a delivery to be delayed.
Gustavo looked at the manifests. Order in. Order out. Not much to it but painful monotony. He picked up the papers and swiped sideways with this arm, the marble dust once again coating the surface. He rubbed his thumb and forefinger together, the sound like wallpaper. Unlike the dust of his charcoal, brick dust left his skin dry, and his soul unnourished.
He hates this factory, he hated this work. He had no intentions of growing up and setting foot here. He dreamed of just running away, as best as he was able, and leaving it all behind. No money, no title, just him, the country, and his art. Perhaps, a wife if love could find his way to him despite his ailment.
Instead, he was stuck in this factory listening to the deafening grinding of the saw. Staring at numbers that made his head ache. He was slow to literacy as a child. The teacher knew him to be intelligent, and with his kind tutelage he broke through and taught him how to slow his mind, but when distracted it was easy for the letters to become jumbled. He pressed his eyes shut and opened them, hoping to reset his thoughts when he noticed a canceled and returned order for Endinbury hall, the estate of Lord Hernandez. It was a large order and it appeared the hall missed several deadlines to repay the credit.
"Look at this? Why did they cancel the order?" Gustavo asked when his father returned to his side.
“Lord Hernandez has been failing to pay his debts all over town. Apparently, he has been negligent in collecting his rent and spending the yearly stipends on extravagant upgrades and gambling in Cheapside.”
“So I would set your sights on someone other than Ms. Gaitan. I know your mother and her were visited the other day.” Lord Jorge Pinheiro, said taking his seat and readying his quill. "Far too low a prospect for our family anyways."
“I have no interest, in Ms.Gaitan, but what do they have to do with this?”
“Mrs.Gaitan is delighted in his circumstances, the Gaitan’s marble delivery was also canceled to Edinbury. So a high lord like him would be desperate to debase himself to better his financial standing.” He moved to the next paper after dipping his quill again. “Can’t argue with that. Could you think of a more perfect pair? The morally bankrupt with money, and the titled who is bankrupt.” he chuckled at his own joke, as he continued to sign the papers.
Gustavo frowned at the glibness in which his father explained the situation. And he changed his mind. He wouldn't be running away anytime soon. He would stay the season at least. Just long enough to see Elena married to literally anyone but the wretched Carlos Hernandez.
It would be entertaining for him at least. Spending time with her would cause his father deserved consternation, and would enrage the territorial Lord Hernando.
He might just start to have fun in the high society after all.

First Night - An Elena Drabble
Elena Ruiz couldn’t sleep that first night.
It was peaceful out here in the country, in this encanto. A soft, comfortable silence of the night with echoes of an acoustic guitar playing somewhere in the village by an insomniac Elena could relate to. Not at all like the city with horns, arguments, broken glass, or howling dogs. No, it was different out here...comforting on paper, but terrifying as she lay there in the darkness. A vulnerable sense of loneliness.
Her hair was flat against the pillow of a small bed by a window. Her friend Ozzy let her stay with him and his boyfriend in their guest room, and the two hosts really did try and go above and beyond to make her first night as comfortable as they could. Nice, plush blankets made by Ozzy’s boyfriend, cups of fresh water by the bed for her to drink, and she even came across a small candy left by the couple on her pillow as an after dinner treat. Her suitcases were nicely stacked, just one open on an armchair where she dug out her nightgown to sleep in. They were very kind out here, these villagers, and it was a welcoming environment for someone like her. For someone like Ozzy too, who continued to write to her after moving here himself. Just two people, trying to outrun the shadows of their past that nipped at their heels. Like Elena as she fled her home, chased by words of mouth and the ink of tabloids before she wound up here.
In her arms, held tight, was a stuffed animal of a blue and yellow macaw, ornate with patterned cloth of like-colors and marble eyes that glistened from the moonlight seeping in through the threads of the curtain. Ozzy’s boyfriend, Gustavo if she remembered his name right, was an artist and crafter, and there was a shelf in the room where some of his favorite toys and dolls he made were lined up in a row on display. Feeling a bit alone sometime during the late evening, Elena got up and chose that macaw to snuggle with in bed, and she stared at it that early morning as her thumbs brushed the cotton fabric of its feathers. Her eyes then drifted as she stared up at the dark ceiling.
Her thoughts were running out of steam in her exhaustion, yet she couldn’t bear to actually close her eyes, less the faces that haunted her would show themselves in her dreams. Carlos, all those people whose sour expressions she memorized in the courthouse, the press, those women that sneered at her... That one woman in particular who clung to Carlos like a rotten disease…
A small whimper escaped her as she pulled up that macaw closer to her face to hide herself from her own thoughts. After a quick roll, she lay there on her side to sob, and the macaw’s yellow cotton feathers grew dark with her tears.
Just this small act alone of crying into something as innocent as a child’s toy unlocked a deep memory within Elena, and she felt so small again - a child herself just trying to understand how the world could be so cruel and how on earth someone as fragile as a songbird could dare go up against it.
At least out here in the country, she could cry over the echoes of that unfamiliar guitar and not the criticisms of her all too familiar Carlos.

Yes, it’s possible to convert to Judaism!  It’s a long process, involving quite a lot of study, so it’s not something to be undertaken lightly.  But it is possible, and lots of people have done it.  The end result isn’t just “oh, I’ve taken up a different belief system,” though that may be part of your process.  It’s much more like being adopted into a family.  At the end of the process, you haven’t just changed your philosophy -- you’ve become part of am yisrael, the Jewish family.
The classic model of the convert is Ruth, a Moabite widow of a Jewish man, who was close enough to her widowed mother-in-law Naomi that she declared her intent to become part of the Jewish people so that she could stay with Naomi forever.*  Ruth is, of course, not the first convert, and there are preliminary instructions about welcoming prospective converts in the Torah (of which the Book of Ruth is not a part), but Ruth has the best speech about it.
And so, we use Ruth as a model for how to welcome Jews By Choice to our family.  Our larger metaphorical ethnic family, of course, but also, increasingly, into our own personal families.  It used to be that if one half of a couple was Jewish and the partner wasn’t, the Jewish partner was expected to convert.  But slowly, over the years, it’s become more common for the non-Jewish partner to join the people of their beloved.  This was the case for composer Alan Lazar, whose husband Gustavo Ruiz converted to Judaism.  Lazar composed this piece to celebrate Ruiz’s conversion and welcome him to the mishpocha.
*There is a history of using the story of Ruth as a metaphor for lesbian relationships, which . . . sure.  It’s much kinder than a lot of cultural narratives about how a woman might get along with her mother-in-law.

PREMIOS METROPOLITANOS DE TEATRO Alfombra Roja
Tumblr media
INVITADOS Aarón Balderi Alejandra Bogue Alejandro Calva  Alejandro de la Madrid  Alfonso Borbolla  Alma Cero  Arcelia Ramírez  Ari Albarran  Ariel Miramontes  Carolina Reyes  Christian Ramos  Conchi León  Dalilah Polanco  Daniel Miranda  Eugenio Rubio  Francisco Rubio  Gaby Ruiz (Chef)  Garçonne  German Ortega  Karol Sevilla  Laura Tamayo  Leticia Huijara  Leticia Pedrajo  Lisardo  Ludwika Paleta  Luis Arrieta  Mabel Cadena  Manu Nna  Margarita Gralia  Maria Aura  María Elisa Gallegos  Marte Calderon  Maya Zapata  Mel Fuentes  Michelle Rodriguez  Mónica Dionne  Mónica Huarte  Regina Blandon  Regina Voce  Roger González  Sofia Espinosa  Verónica Langer  Verónica Toussaint  Vicky Araico  Ximena Gonzalez Rubio

Gus and Elena: First Meeting
For a man so concerned about being trapped. Lord Gustavo Pinheiro did a fine job getting himself into a right mess.
When he heard Mrs. and Miss. Gaiten being announced at the door. He told the servant to tell them he was “indisposed” if they asked.
He expected his mother to be polite and entertain for the prerequisite and proper 15 minutes before excusing herself and sending the two unsolicited visitors on their way. Instead, he heard his mother laughing. Honest to God laughing, and the sounds of Elena's sweet giggles coming from the front hall. And as their conversation carried past social protocol, he realized something horrifying. His mother was enjoying their company.
He couldn't escape to his room. Because the tap of his cane on the marble steps would be unmistakable as he ascended to hide in his quarters. Certainly couldn’t stay here, for if Ms. Gaitan enthralled his mother further, they would likely take luncheon and tea in the very parlor room in which he stood.
He was at an impasse, perhaps he could sneak through the servant door down the hall and through the kitchen. It would garner stares from the staff, but at least he would avoid the social travesty of ignoring callers.
Gustavo pulled himself, grimacing at the stiffness in his leg. The pain was not as severe as it once was, but too quick or strenuous a movement, or standing for too long brought on a persistent ache. He attempted to stretch out his limb, but the pins and needles made it impossible to put any weight on his bad leg at all, and he felt his body sway as he fell onto the pianoforte stool, his left side bodily hitting the keys and the discordant sound of half a piano of keys being struck was deafening in the silence.
'shit', Lord Pinheiro cursed. Straining his ears. To listen for his mother's voice.
"Oh dear, it's the cook's child I think. We let him bring her in when her grandmother is unwell and sometimes she plays on the piano. Not well as you can hear", Gustavo heard his mother's voice explain, getting closer.
‘DAMN IT ALL’.  It was impossible to rush to the servant's door now. Gustavo grunted as he hoisted himself up and went to open the curtains to let the light in at least, of which there were several.
"It's kind of you to let her play. If you wish to foster her skills. I act as a music teacher to a few of the gentry children. I would be happy to tutor her".
"Oh, she is servant class, I am sure you are better occupied teaching music to someone who can use it."
"With respect, I was of low class when I learned my musical skills, it has served me well and is a joy very few things can replicate"
Lady Pinheiro smiled at another of the young woman's faux pas. Lauded as a well-trained social climber. She wasn't as poised as she was purported to be. Polite certainly, but if she was well trained, she wouldn't have said thank you to a lower servant earlier. Or made a self-deprecating joke at her own expense. And just now offered her opinion against a Lady in defense of the cook's child. For all whispers and rumors surrounding this girl, she put on airs less than others she would entertain. And she was beginning to suppose her genteelness and sweetness, were genuine. A rare trait in the le bon ton.
"Of course, you are right. I will ask him. He cannot pay, but I can cover the fee."  Lady Pinheiro gestured at the servant nearby who opened the door for the parlor while holding her hand at the protestation of Elena, who meant she'd offer her services for free.
"Posh, I insist. But first, let me hear what I am paying for... Gustavo?!"
Lord Pinheiro froze he was only able to open one window and two sets of heavy damask curtains since setting to work at it. And in his haste to tarry to the next curtain he had already exerted himself, the evidence of it stitched on his face.
His mother was closer to him, so the Gaitan pair couldn't see the mortification on her face. There was very little explanation as to how this could be considered too indisposed to meet guests.
Lord Pinheiro set to open his mouth in explanation, hoping to pluck the words from the ether but was instead interrupted.
"Oh Lord Pinheiro, so sorry to have disturbed you", Lady Elena offered with a proper curtsy, a shocked Mrs.Gaitan following her lead. "The drawn curtains! You must have been indisposed with a terrible headache."
The Lord just stared at her wondering how she could be so dense of the situation, before catching the smallest fraction of a wink. Hidden from the elder women's sight.
"Yes… forgive me. I had been struggling with it all morning. I only now started feeling well enough to bring the light in."
"Fresh air would also do you good" added Lady Pinheiro, as she sniffed the air subtly, gesturing for the servant to open the windows.  "Elena was going to present for us, shall you stay?."
"Oh yes, Lord Pinheiro. You won't find a finer singer and musician than my Elena I can promise you that. She is such a talent, her singing routinely brings many to tears.”
"I'd wager, with an improperly tended migraine any singer could draw tears." Elena joked warmly to her mother. Lord Pinheiro caught himself smiling at that. Before making his face impassive, when she looked at him again.
"Please, don't feel compelled to stand on propriety on our account. I would not be offended if you wish to nurse your headache away from my playing." Elena offered. She would be sad to see him go, wanting to learn more of this handsome man’s character, but wouldn’t force his company.
'poor bait indeed, that releases its own snare'. Gustavo thought as he readied to bow and excuse himself, before stopping and turning to her. "Actually… I think I am well enough to stay. Thank you."
Elena gave him a delighted lopsided grin that reached her pretty mahogany eyes. The sincerity of the reaction, caught him by surprise and despite desiring to be seen as reticint, he couldn’t help but mirror it. Gustavo, gestured for all to sit, his mother by his side. Elena at her place at the piano, Mrs.Gaitan delighted at their exchange beside her ready to turn the pages.
“Now, hopefully my reputation hasn’t preceded me too much,” Elena said with what Gus thought was a knowing smile. “I would hate to leave my hosts wanting.”
Mrs.Gaitan was known for exaggeration. But truly, he had rarely heard a more beautiful voice and expert playing. And just for a moment, he entertained the thought he wasn't one of the last Lord’s she visited since the ball. That she came here to see him, Gustavo, and not a Lord Pinheiro. That she wasn't just casting a wide net for social climbing.
Or at the very least he thought, watching her Auburn hair glow in the sunbeam that bathed her in light. That he didn't care why, or when she came. That if he was destined for a loveless marriage, he could do worse than Miss. Elena Gaitan.
