U. S. Postal Service wants to Raise Prices
The U. S. Postal Service recently filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission of mailing services price changes to take effect July 14, 2024. The new rates include a 5-cent increase in the price of a First-Class Mail Forever stamp from 68 cents to 73 cents.

Electricity from renewable sources dropped last year even as Illinois and surrounding Midwest states pushed to replace fossil fuels, such as coal and natural gas, with wind and solar power.
Things didn’t work out as expected, and climate change may have played a part.
The amount of electricity generated from wind power—the state’s biggest source of renewable energy—took a surprising 6 percent dip from the previous year, while natural gas-generated electricity had a 43 percent jump in 2023, government data show.
A pressure system in Canada—the same weather pattern that helped spur wildfires up north, filling Chicago skies with smoke last summer—was a big reason wind power was down in 2023. The shifting wind direction affected how much wind powered all those nearly 300-foot turbines dotting the Illinois countryside.
“Small changes in wind speed can have pretty consequential impacts on wind power,” said Jessica Conroy, an associate professor of earth science and environmental change at the University of Illinois.
Conroy is working with doctoral student Allison Wallin, who is completing research on variations in wind speeds over the past three decades and how those trends may affect wind energy in the future.
“Using future model wind projections is a real necessity,” Conroy said.
For more than a decade, scientists have asked whether climate change—a main reason for renewable energy development—can, itself, have an effect on wind power.
Ongoing research may accelerate a shift that is already happening with developers focusing more on building solar power.
Solar power increased significantly in Illinois last year but from a small base. As expected, coal, which has seen a rapid decline due to plants closing, dropped by a third.
The state’s largest source of power, nuclear, was down about 1 percent.
The increase in generation from natural gas follows the completion last year of a 1.2-gigawatt gas-fired power plant, Three Rivers Energy Center, in Grundy County, southwest of the Chicago metro area.
This one large power plant has nearly as much generating capacity as all of the utility-scale wind and utility-scale solar that came online last year in the state.
Last year’s winds were unusual, slowed by what Illinois State Climatologist Trent Ford called “a very strong high-pressure system” over Canada that was north and east of Illinois.

My favorite head canon is that Heartbreak Weather is about werewolves! I wrote a little ficlet Moon In Her Eyes for trick or treat fest one year based on the idea, and wrote an outline for a much longer fic. There's just so much inspiration to draw from.
🔪 ⇢ what’s the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?
I can't think of anything super weird right now, but there are a few that are strangely specific. This past November I spent a couple of weeks searching stores for mince meat pies so I could taste them while writing Baking Memories. For The Grundy County Auction Incident, I researched a bit about live cattle auctions. I'd attended farm equipment auctions before but never for live animals. And while writing Fixing to Thrill I learned so much about vintage Aston Martin cars.
🦷 ⇢ share some personal wisdom or a life hack you swear on
An older friend recently told me that I should never get too comfortable. We were talking about careers, but I do think it applies to so many aspects of life. I was frustrated by my new position at work because I felt like I had just gotten comfortable in my last role, and then the rug had been ripped out from under me. But a year later, I can see the value in taking that risk even though it was, and still is a huge challenge. I've been trying to do more uncomfortable things, like trying new foods, going somewhere unfamiliar, meeting new people.
🦴 ⇢ is there a piece of media that inspires your writing?
Other fics! I read a lot of fics and am always blown away by the creativity of this fandom, which makes me want to write my own. Also fic fests! I love a good prompt and a deadline, which can help me finish a fic more than almost anything.

X-Manson or X-Mansion is an X-Men fanfiction written by someone under the username Dr Benway; because there is no discussion of it online, I have decided to annotate it piece by piece to dissect it via Tumblr. I don't think Henry Vanderbylt is a reference to anything within marvel comics, but his name shares similarities to American Businessman William Henry Vandervbilt, though I'm not sure of the significance of this connection.

HV: I sold the house to the man who called himself Xavier in the spring of '68. I don't know where he came from. He had money, he paid in cash. Said he wanted to set up a school. The house was perfect for that. The Jesuits had had it for 30 years after it had been built by that man who used to own all the smoked meat shops. Italian, I think he was. At any rate, the house was perfect for a school. After he moved in, I heard he was telling people that he was from one of the older families in the area. Lies, all lies. Old money here dates back to the Dutch settlers from 400 years ago. That man showed up off a boat from somewhere. Tangiers, I heard.

*I believe that Elisabeth Grundy references Miss Grundy of Archie Comics, given her description and style of dress. But Miss Grundy of Archie is named Geraldine.
EG: He started with five students, and I found that somewhat unusual. Private schools generally had larger classes than that. I was also surprised to see that there were no other instructors, at least not at first.
*funny, I have the same issue with comics Xavier.
Int: But he had other teachers later?
EG: I do recall meeting some, yes. A physical education teacher by the name of Logan comes to mind. We had records of others.
Int: Did you inspect the School?
EG: Personally, only once. It seemed a respectable and well-equipped establishment. I recall that they had the most marvelous pate at the lunch that they served.
*That's not pate.
Int: Did you meet any of the students?
EG: I suppose that I met the original five. I understood that they'd had problems in other schools, although none of them looked in any way unusual except for the boy with the big feet and hands.
Int: Henry McCoy?
EG: Yes, Henry. He did quite well at Princeton, I understand. The others didn't seem to thrive. There was that shy boy, Scott Summers, and the wisecracking boy, Robert Drake, I believe. There was also Warren Worthington, whose father had financed the school. There was only one girl, that poor Jean Grey. I had no idea what abilities they might have had.
Int: Why was the license granted to a man with no teaching credentials?
EG: It wasn't as if we had any choice. With the power he possessed, he might have made us do anything.
I don't entirely believe that to be true. I think that it was half Xavier manipulating minds, but it also seems a lot of the time like this was a willful act of ignorance on the part of a lot of the people who claim it.

President Biden Approves Major Disaster Declaration
Federal Government Approves Missouri Governor Parson's Request for Major Disaster Declaration
JEFFERSON CITY, MO (STL.News) Thursday, Missouri Governor Mike Parson announced that President Joe Biden has approved his request for a major disaster declaration to help local governments and nonprofit agencies in 33 counties in response to multiple severe weather systems that impacted Missouri from July 29 – August 14.
The declaration makes federal public assistance available for the repair of damaged roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure, as well as reimbursement of associated emergency response and recovery costs. The Governor's September 5 request included more than $14 million in qualifying expenses that had already been identified.
"This is important news for the communities that have been repeatedly impacted by severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding this summer," Governor Parson said. "We appreciate the President making federal assistance available, which will provide millions of dollars in much-needed support to help repair roads, bridges, and other vitally important infrastructure across the state."
The following counties are included in the President's disaster declaration: Adair, Barry, Barton, Bates, Benton, Bollinger, Camden, Christian, Clark, Crawford, Dade, Gentry, Greene, Grundy, Henry, Iron, Knox, Madison, Maries, Mississippi, Morgan, New Madrid, Ozark, Perry, Scotland, Scott, Shelby, St. Clair, Ste. Genevieve, Taney, Vernon, Wayne, and Worth.
The disaster declaration also makes assistance available statewide through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Hazard Mitigation Program, which assists with cost-effective measures to reduce the potential for future damage to public infrastructure as a result of natural disasters.
