[ID: Nine photographs. The first shows a dark paved walking path covered in the orange remains of pinecones that have been dropped down onto it, with the seed-covering plates scattered everywhere, and a few of the long centers lying nearby. The second shows the branches of a pine tree with the light from the setting sun washing the branches in orange, with an eastern grey squirrel perched on one branch, its fur shining orange from the light, crouched over a pinecone with its tail hanging down the side of the branch. The next four show a large, bush-like plant. The camera first zooms in on a small cluster of startlingly red leaves, standing out sharply against the rest, which are a healthy green. The camera then focuses on a visible stem of the plant, which is a warm brown color, almost orange. Next the camera zooms out a little to show more of the plant, with the original red leaves visible, and the base of the stem shown. Many of the leaves have small black specks on them. Finally the camera shows the tip of one of the stems, with a white hand holding onto a leaf at the end to pull the stem closer to the camera, showing pointed, cone-shaped buds at the base of each leaf, and that each leaf's stem is reddish in color. The last three pictures show a wild potato vine, a type of morning glory. The first is zoomed out, showing both the light green, elongated, heart-shaped leaves, as well as the folded up, closed, large white flowers. The next two pictures zoom in on first the shut flowers, showing that the large petals are closed in a softly-pointed spiral shape, then the leaves, which have slightly purple-colored veins, and red or pink central veins. End ID.]
more pictures taken with a camera that insists its battery is dying two seconds after insisting that the battery is fully charged and it's totally fine to take pictures. There was another squirrel somewhere higher above than that one, but I couldn' tsee it. We knew it was there because it dropped an already chewed up pinecone and almost hit that one, lol.

In the face of extreme habitat loss, wildlife biologist Dr. Chris Jenkins puts an ambitious plan in motion to save two uniquely American reptiles, the eastern indigo snake and the gopher tortoise, and the forest they call home.
The two threatened species are as important to their ecosystems as they are interconnected themselves. The eastern indigo snake is a prolific hunter that manages predator populations in the southeastern United States. In the northern part of its range, the snakes – along with more than 350 other species – rely on the deep burrows that the gopher tortoise creates to survive freezing temperatures every winter.
Both the indigo snakes and gopher tortoises are in steep decline, as their native habitat has been deforested for centuries and then further fragmented by roads with fast-moving vehicles. Dr. Chris Jenkins is part of a massive conservation effort that takes the reptiles’ homes into account. The team surveys the most critical tortoise land, purchases it, and then restores the native forests. From there, Dr. James Bogan, who leads the only eastern indigo breeding program in the world, can reintroduce new snakes to areas where they have previously gone extinct – with plenty of tortoise burrows to protect them.

Lovebug (Plecia nearctica)
Distribution: Native to Central America and the Southeastern USA (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas). Most common in Texas and Louisiana.
Habitat: Can be found in almost all habitats, but most common in grassy areas; most common around fresh-cut lawns, animal pastures and areas with decaying vegetation. Found at altitudes of over 450 metres.
Diet: Larvae feed on decaying vegetation; adults feed on the nectar of plants such as sweet clover, goldenrod and Brazilian pepper.
Description: This insect is called the lovebug because mated pairs often stay together for days at a time during and after mating, with flights of mating lovebugs sometimes numbering into the millions. These flights can be quite a nuisance to drivers, as they easily splatter onto windshields and hoods at highway speeds. The acidic body chemistry of dead bugs, left for even just a handful of hours, makes them incredibly difficult to scrape off car parts; what's more, they also have a tendency to cause pits in automotive paint when left untouched for too long, or can cause radiators to overheat. Because they're attracted to fresh paint, lovebug corpses are also a common sight in the dried paint on buildings.
There is many myths surrounding lovebugs, perhaps due to how common they are. One myth claims that these insects were genetically engineered by the University of Florida in order to control mosquito populations (disregarding the fact that they're herbivorous, and thus would make poor pest control!). Another myth claims that lovebugs escaped from the University of Florida after being transported there by scientists; while their original range includes only Louisiana and Mississippi, populations naturally spread north- and southward. For some reason, this insect has many University of Florida-related conspiracies!

How You Met
~ Georgia Stanway ~
~~~~~~~~~~
it was evident to everyone who knows you that you and Georgia were meant for each other
it all began on a rainy autumn day in Germany
as an up-and-coming American singer-songwriter, it was your first time in the country
with your latest single blowing up on TikTok you had somehow managed to wrangle yourself a European tour
having come from a close but not wealthy family unit back in Colorado travelling at all was new to you
but especially travelling SO far around the globe
that's the reason you made it a mission to get out and explore every place you go
even when the weather is miserable!
which brought you to the hole-in-the-wall café you’d found yourself in
bundled in several sweatshirts and a rain jacket on top
rushing out of the cold and wet into the first local-looking business you saw
you had underestimated quite how busy the small business would be
so in your stumbling, feeling like a wet cat dragged backwards through a hedge, you ended up tumbling into someone
and it wasn’t just any someone
after recovering from the hot coffee you had spilt on yourself in the fall
and the feeling of the stranger's hands electrifying you through your many layers as she steadied you
you finally took in the full glory of the women in front of you
cheeks rosy from the cold, an amused smirk resting on her face
Georgia was just as stunned to see you
despite the wind-whipped hair stuck to your forehead and the bewildered animal look you had going on
you were obviously not from here
sucking a deep breath she managed a cheeky smile
flustered and embarrassed you began stuttering out badly strung-together phrases of German in hopes of not being shamed out of the shop entirely
Georgia’s grin only widened as she realised that you had  mistaken her for a native
finally putting you out of your misery she, in her very English accent, boldly stated her most commonly used German phrase
“entschuldigung, ich spreche kein Deutsch”
the confused look that crossed your face only reminded Georgia more of a puppy than you had originally
so with a chuckle she held out her hand and introduces herself
only laughing harder at the embarrassed but relieved expression that crossed your face as she did so
after much debate over who owed who coffee the two of you found yourselves settled snugly together in the corner of the shop, drinks steaming in front of you
with conversation flowing but mugs long since emptied the pair of you are only broken from the bubble you created when your phone begins buzzing incessantly
ignoring it once you’d sent an apologetic smile to Georgia as it rang again
after encouragement to answer you are immediately met with the worried voice of your manager (and older brother)
after confirming where you were, and that you were safe he was quick to remind you of how close you were cutting it to sound check for your show that night
eyes widened at how long you had spent talking with the English women you’re quick to exchange numbers and a ticket to your show
it’s months until you see each other again though
and even longer before you became official
but Georgia had never been more thankful for the awful weather than she was that day
~~~~~~~~~~
Idk if what I’ve written is great but G is one of my favourite concepts so far! Let me know what you guys think.
We're moving through the WAG diaries nicely!! Reader Origin's and dating blurbs coming next unless I get some requests so feel free to make suggestions ◡̈

An update to my involvement with dead things (GEORGIA PEEPS- you should read this! This applies to EVERYONE in the state of GA)
Well, unbeknownst to me, Georgia (where I reside) changed their laws in 2022 regarding the selling and purchasing of any animal native to the state (GA Code 27-1-29).
I am not longer allowed to sell, nor purchase any animal that is labeled as a native animal in the state of Georgia.
This goes for any animal that is harvested outside of Georgia. It is illegal for me to purchase anything from anyone outside of Georgia, even if the animal was obtained legally in another state.
There are NO special permits I can obtain to legally sell native animal skulls, bones, or parts thereof. I have spoken to DNR regarding this. There are a select few animals who are not protected under this new law (coyotes, beaver, muskrat to name a few…)
This does put me in a hole, as I normally only sell native wildlife that is legally obtained. DNR advised I can legally hold a personal collection of native wildlife, but as stated, no selling or purchasing them.
I will still be selling, cleaning and collecting, but will have to now do so with domesticated animals or native animals considered a nuisance/not protected.
Just wanted to give an update to what I’ve been having to adapt to! I have several hundred dollars worth of raw heads I’ve purchased from animals legally trapped that I’ll now have to just toss out pretty much.

James Baskett
Tumblr media
James Franklin Baskett (February 16, 1904 – July 9, 1948) was an American actor who portrayed Uncle Remus, singing the song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" in the 1946 Disney feature film Song of the South.
Baskett studied pharmacology as a young man but gave it up to pursue an acting career. He first moved to New York City, New York, where he joined up with Bill 'Mr. Bojangles' Robinson. Using the name Jimmie Baskette, he appeared with Louis Armstrong on Broadway in the 1929 black musical revue Hot Chocolates and in several all-black New York films, including Harlem is Heaven (1932).
He later moved to Los Angeles, California, and had a supporting role in the film Straight to Heaven (1939), starring Nina Mae McKinney. In 1941 he voiced Fats Crow in the animated Disney film Dumbo, and he also had bit parts in several B movies, including that of Lazarus in Revenge of the Zombies (1943), a porter in The Heavenly Body (1944), and native tribal leader Orbon in Jungle Queen (1945). From 1944 until 1948, he was part of the cast of the Amos 'n' Andy Show live radio program as lawyer Gabby Gibson.
In 1945, he auditioned for a bit part voicing one of the animals in the new Disney feature film Song of the South (1946), based on the Uncle Remus stories by Joel Chandler Harris. Walt Disney was impressed with Baskett's talent and hired him on the spot for the lead role of Uncle Remus. Baskett was also given the voice role of Brer Fox, one of the film's animated antagonists, and also filled in as the main animated protagonist, Brer Rabbit, in one sequence. This was one of the first Hollywood portrayals of a black actor as a non-comic character in a leading role in a film meant for general audiences.
Baskett was prohibited from attending the film's premiere in Atlanta, Georgia, because Atlanta was racially segregated by law.
Although Baskett was occasionally criticized for accepting such a "demeaning" role (most of his acting credits were that of African-American stereotypes), his acting was almost universally praised, and columnist Hedda Hopper, along with Walt Disney, was one of the many journalists and personalities who declared that he should receive an Academy Award for his work. Baskett defended the film and his character in it, saying, "I believe that certain groups are doing my race more harm in seeking to create dissension, than can ever possibly come out of the Song of the South."
On March 20, 1948, Baskett received an Academy Honorary Award for his performance as Uncle Remus. He was the first African-American male actor to earn an Academy Award. Additionally, Baskett was the last adult actor to receive an Honorary Oscar for a single performance.
Baskett had been in poor health during the filming of Song of the South due to diabetes and he suffered a heart attack in December 1946 shortly after its release. His health continued to decline, and he was often unable to attend the Amos 'n' Andy radio show he was on, missing almost half of the 1947–1948 season. On July 9, 1948, during the show's summer hiatus, James Baskett died at his home of heart failure resulting from diabetes at age 44. He was survived by his wife Margaret and his mother Elizabeth. He is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Her relationship with her mother is a little strained at times. She loves her mom very much, but being raised by the hot-headed Italian made things a little interesting, especially when Isobel was trying to prove her independence while Aoife was running around being a little shit. Relationship with sibling: Isobel and Aoife fought like cats and dogs when they were younger. They were three years apart but so close in personality. Poor Colin had to deal with three Italian-tempered women running around his house, causing chaos. Isobel loves Aoife with all her heart, but they still have the typical sister relationship. They get on each other’s nerves but would kill to protect each other.
Extended Family These people are not related to her, but she grew up with them and views them as family:

Strong-willed and dutiful - Isobel’s integrity is everything to her, portraying it in her words and actions. She works hard and stays focused with patience and determination, which others admire.
Responsible - Her word is her promise, and promises mean everything to Isobel. She is loyal to a fault.
Jack-of-all-trades - Isobel is a repository for a vast wealth of knowledge. She learns quickly and can utilize what she’s learned at the drop of a hat.
Compassionate - She’s a bleeding heart for those in need, willing to throw herself into the line of fire to protect an innocent person without a second thought.
Intelligent - Isobel is an avid reader, consuming whatever she can get her hands on. Had she pursued college, she would have more than likely gone on to receive a Ph.D. in whatever subject she’d chosen to study. Safe to say, the woman is borderline genius.
When someone first meets her, Isobel can come across as stoic and withdrawn. It takes some prying, but eventually, she will open up to those willing to try to be her friend.

TRIVIA
Is obsessed with Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.
She has a ridiculous amount of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings lore memorized and can recall it anytime.
She has a replica of Darth Vader’s lightsaber, Aragorn’s sword Andúril, Legolas’s dual blades, and Arwen’s blade Hadhafang in storage at her parents’ place
Loves to read; her book collection is ridiculous. Isobel isn’t picky about what genre she reads, either.
She was caught reading a few times when she flew helicopters and was stuck on standby.
One of her favorite things to do in her downtime is go to used and new bookstores and browse for hours.
In her senior year of high school, she applied to Yale, Brown, and Columbia to keep her parents happy. She was accepted into all three but declined and enlisted in the military instead.
She married Lucas Greer (US Army Paratrooper, deceased) when she was nineteen. Their marriage was rough, and they legally separated when she was 27. The divorce was finalized in 2019 when she was 28.
She stays in touch with Lucas’s parents every once in a while.
The end of the marriage to their son was rough, but despite that, Isobel loved her in-laws. They were nothing but kind to her through everything that happened.
Covers her prominent scars with tattoos, but she’s also obsessed with tattoos. She currently has five, the biggest of which is her partial back piece.
Has a lovely singing voice, but her party trick is her ability to scream like Courtney LaPlante.
BACKGROUND
Born to a mother who served in the US Army as a nurse and a father who held the record for the most kills under any Army Ranger’s belt until he retired, Isobel grew up in a military household. When she was younger, she wanted to rebel against her parents and become a lawyer, but she always idolized her parents and eventually grew out of her lawyer phase.
Growing up, Isobel spent every second she could with her father when he was home. Colin deployed a lot, so the man treasured each moment he could be with his family. He took Isobel (and her younger sister once she was old enough) on every hunting trip, using the time to teach her how to shoot. He also taught her the Ranger Way. By the time Isobel was in high school, she was an expert in tracking, survival, and evasion. If needed, she could survive off the land for an indefinite amount of time, given the right tools.
Isobel had a somewhat normal high school experience. Her senior year, she was the Track & Field team's captain, bringing her team the gold for the 200 and 400-meter sprint at the State Championship and anchoring the relay team to take home first place. Besides participating in sports, Isobel was the captain of the debate team and a member of the National Honor Society.
Thanks partly to her well-rounded high school career, Isobel had her pick of colleges to choose from…but that was the opposite of what she wanted. On the day of her eighteenth birthday, she marched down to the nearest Army recruiter and enlisted.
She made it through Basic Training with flying colors, earning herself an Expert Marksmanship badge. Sadly, she couldn’t pursue her dream of becoming an Army Ranger like her father, so she became an attack helicopter pilot instead.
Upon graduating from Warrant Officer Candidate School and Warrant Officer Pilot School and flight training, Isobel found herself a fully-fledged AH-64D/E (Apache Longbow/Guardian) pilot with the callsign “Medusa.” Around this time, she also met her future husband Lucas Greer. He was a dashing paratrooper, and their romance was a whirlwind. Within three months, they were married. Things were blissful before the deployments started, but during their second deployment, Lucas began getting abusive.
The marriage continued to grow more and more toxic, and eventually, friends and family began to take notice. One in particular was Hannah “Sparrow” Clayton, Isobel’s best friend. During this time, Sparrow had an accident climbing K2 in Asia. The night Isobel got the call saying Sparrow had disappeared was the straw that broke the camel’s back, immediately filling for legal separation when Sparrow woke up from her coma.
By 2019, twenty-eight-year-old Isobel was legally divorced and happier than she had felt in years. She completed another two tours before being shot down by an enemy RPG after she and her gunner were scrambled to deal with the aftermath of the 2021 Hamid Karzai International Airport bombing, which landed her at Walter Reed Medical Center.
Isobel had served her country for twelve years, facing the prospect of being medically separated from the US Army or stuck behind a desk for the rest of her career. That’s when Laswell sent the uncut footage of the helicopter crash to Captain John Price, informing him that she was recruiting Isobel to Task Force 141.
Price arrived at the hospital and officially recruited Isobel on Laswell’s behalf. Isobel spent six months with TF141 before the Los Almas and Chicago events transpired. After proving her mettle, Price pulled some strings and pushed some paper to have Isobel officially become a member of the British Armed Forces to go through the SAS selection process.
After passing the grueling training, she came out the other side a member of the British SAS and a full-time member of Task Force 141.

This political cartoon by Louis Dalrymple appeared in Judge magazine in 1903. It depicts European immigrants as rats. Nativism and anti-immigration have a long and sordid history in the United States.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
March 28, 2024
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
MAR 29, 2024
Yesterday the National Economic Council called a meeting of the Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force, which the Biden-Harris administration launched in 2021, to discuss the impact of the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the partial closure of the Port of Baltimore on regional and national supply chains. The task force draws members from the White House and the departments of Transportation, Commerce, Agriculture, Defense, Labor, Health and Human Services, Energy, and Homeland Security. It is focused on coordinating efforts to divert ships to other ports and to minimize impacts to employers and workers, making sure, for example, that dock workers stay on payrolls.
Today, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg convened a meeting of port, labor, and industry partners—ocean carriers, truckers, local business owners, unions, railroads, and so on—to mitigate disruption from the bridge collapse. Representatives came from 40 organizations including American Roll-on Roll-off Carrier; the Georgia Ports Authority; the International Longshoremen’s Association, the International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots; John Deere; Maersk; Mercedes-Benz North America Operations; Seabulk Tankers; Under Armour; and the World Shipping Council.
Today the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration announced it would make $60 million available immediately to be used as a down payment toward initial costs. Already, though, some Republicans are balking at the idea of using new federal money to rebuild the bridge, saying that lawmakers should simply take the money that has been appropriated for things like electric vehicles, or wait until insurance money comes in from the shipping companies.
In 2007, when a bridge across the Mississippi River in Minneapolis suddenly collapsed, Congress passed funding to rebuild it in days and then-president George W. Bush signed the measure into law within a week of the accident.
In the past days, we have learned that the six maintenance workers killed when the bridge collapsed were all immigrants, natives of Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Around 39% of the workforce in the construction industry around Baltimore and Washington, D.C., about 130,000 people, are immigrants, Scott Dance and María Luisa Paúl reported in the Washington Post yesterday.
Some of the men were undocumented, and all of them were family men who sent money back to their home countries, as well. From Honduras, the nephew of one of the men killed told the Associated Press, “The kind of work he did is what people born in the U.S. won’t do. People like him travel there with a dream. They don’t want to break anything or take anything.”
In the Philadelphia Inquirer today, journalist Will Bunch castigated the right-wing lawmakers and pundits who have whipped up native-born Americans over immigration, calling immigrants sex traffickers and fentanyl dealers, and even “animals.” Bunch illustrated that the reality of what was happening on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed creates an opportunity to reframe the immigration debate in the United States.
Last month, Catherine Rampell of the Washington Post noted that immigration is a key reason that the United States experienced greater economic growth than any other nation in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The surge of immigration that began in 2022 brought to the U.S. working-age people who, Director Phill Swagel of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office wrote, are expected to make the U.S. gross domestic product about $7 trillion larger over the ten years from 2023 to 2034 than it would have been otherwise. Those workers will account for about $1 trillion dollars in revenues.
Curiously, while Republican leaders today are working to outdo each other in their harsh opposition to immigration, it was actually the leaders of the original Republican Party who recognized the power of immigrants to build the country and articulated an economic justification for increased immigration during the nation’s first major anti-immigrant period.
The United States had always been a nation of immigrants, but in the 1840s the failure of the potato crop in Ireland sent at least half a million Irish immigrants to the United States. As they moved into urban ports on the East Coast, especially in Massachusetts and New York, native-born Americans turned against them as competitors for jobs.
The 1850s saw a similar anti-immigrant fury in the new state of California. After the discovery of gold there in 1848, native-born Americans—the so-called Forty Niners—moved to the West Coast. They had no intention of sharing the riches they expected to find. The Indigenous people who lived there had no right to the land under which gold lay, native-born men thought; nor did the Mexicans whose government had sold the land to the U.S. in 1848; nor did the Chileans, who came with mining skills that made them powerful competitors. Above all, native-born Americans resented the Chinese miners who came to work in order to send money home to a land devastated by the first Opium War.
Democrats and the new anti-immigrant American Party (more popularly known as the “Know Nothings” because members claimed to know nothing about the party) turned against the new immigrants, seeing them as competition that would drive down wages. In the 1850s, Know Nothing officials in Massachusetts persecuted Catholics and deported Irish immigrants they believed were paupers. In California the state legislature placed a monthly tax on Mexican and Chinese miners, made unemployment a crime, took from Chinese men the right to testify in court, and finally tried to stop Chinese immigration altogether by taxing shipmasters $50 for each Chinese immigrant they brought.
When the Republicans organized in the 1850s, they saw society differently than the Democrats and the Know Nothings. They argued that society was not made up of a struggle over a limited economic pie, but rather that hardworking individuals would create more than they could consume, thus producing capital that would make the economy grow. The more people a nation had, the stronger it would be.
In 1860 the new party took a stand against the new laws that discriminated against immigrants. Immigrants’ rights should not be “abridged or impaired,” the delegates to its convention declared, adding that they were “in favor of giving a full and efficient protection to the rights of all classes of citizens, whether native or naturalized, both at home and abroad.”
Republicans’ support for immigration only increased during the Civil War. In contrast to the southern enslavers, they wanted to fill the land with people who supported freedom. As one poorly educated man wrote to his senator, “Protect Emegration and that will protect the Territories to Freedom.”
Republicans also wanted to bring as many workers to the country as possible to increase economic development. The war created a huge demand for agricultural products to feed the troops. At the same time, a terrible drought in Europe meant there was money to be made exporting grain. But the war was draining men to the battlefields of Stones River and Gettysburg and to the growing U.S. Navy, leaving farmers with fewer and fewer hands to work the land.
By 1864, Republicans were so strongly in favor of immigration that Congress passed “an Act to Encourage Immigration.” The law permitted immigrants to borrow against future homesteads to fund their voyage to the U.S., appropriated money to provide for impoverished immigrants upon their arrival, and, to undercut Democrats’ accusations that they were simply trying to find men to throw into the grinding war, guaranteed that no immigrant could be drafted until he announced his intention of becoming a citizen.
Support for immigration has waxed and waned repeatedly since then, but as recently as 1989, Republican president Ronald Reagan said: “We lead the world because, unique among nations, we draw our people—our strength—from every country and every corner of the world. And by doing so we continuously renew and enrich our nation…. Thanks to each wave of new arrivals to this land of opportunity, we're a nation forever young, forever bursting with energy and new ideas, and always on the cutting edge, always leading the world to the next frontier. This quality is vital to our future as a nation. If we ever closed the door to new Americans, our leadership in the world would soon be lost.”
The workers who died in the bridge collapse on Tuesday “were not ‘poisoning the blood of our country,’” Will Bunch wrote, quoting Trump; “they were replenishing it…. They may have been born all over the continent, but when these men plunged into our waters on Tuesday, they died as Americans.”

top left is the florida redbelly, aka the Pseudemys nelsoni, and are a mainly herbivorous species native to Florida and parts of Georgia in the united states!
top right is the diamondback terrapin, aka the Malaclemys terrapin, which are omnivores which eat largely fish, crustaceans and marsh grasses. they have a native range from the Florida keys all the way to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and has one of the largest ranges of any North American turtle. theres also a subspecies found in Bermuda which was not introduced there by humans! they’re a vulnerable species on the endangered species list due to overhunting in the early 20th century and accidental capture in crab traps.
bottom left is the peninsula cooter, aka the Pseudemys peninsularis, are a freshwater species native to florida. they’re closely related to florida redbellies, but are distinguished by the lack of red plastron! theyre also omnivores!
and finally, bottom right is the wood turtle, aka the Glyptemys insculpta. they live in Nova Scotia in the north and extend westwards to Minnesota and southward to Virginia, although skeletal remains have been found as far south as Georgia! they are omnivorous and have similar shells to diamondback terrapins. unfortunately they are endangered due to habitat destruction and illegal capturing for the pet trade.
just some fun guys for yall because i love turtles and theyre my latest hyperfixation animal (from elephants to foxes to llamas to raccoons and now to turtles. i blame TMNT)

Petroglyphs: History Carved in Stone
Native Americans had artistic abilities and the urge to demonstrate their skill as much as any members of modern society. In north Georgia, they often demonstrated this by carving various types of symbols and images on large boulders.
The Whale-shaped Stone
The best-known and most spectacular sculptured stone is found on the University of Georgia campus, moved there from its original location in Forsyth County. The fine-grained granite stone, nine feet long and two feet wide, is covered on three sides by numerous characters. Most of the markings are neat, concentric circles, carved deeply and with great precision. Some, eight inches in diameter, are cut to a depth of three-quarters of an inch. across a projecting spine are a series of deep "nut" holes that resembles walnuts in size and shape. These drilled holes are connected by lightly pecked lines. There are other undecipherable and ceremonial symbols found on the stone, and all appear ancient. This whale-shaped stone is no work of nature. It was obviously created by human hands to its present dimensions.
Track Rock Gap
The most famous rock carvings in the state are found at Track Rock Gap, located near Blairsville in the shadowy of Brasstown Bald, Georgia's highest peak. Here are several boulders carved with unusual petroglyphs, including a large number of animal tracks. The original number was close to 100, with twenty-six representations of human feet, including one that was seventeen inches long and reputed to be that of a giant. Others were horse, buffalo, deer, and rabbit tracks, rendered so faithfully that the Cherokee believed they were real prints left by humans and animals in clay that later solidified into stone. Several of the rocks have been stolen, and vandals have cut off the beet symbols from the remaining stones. Those that remain intact, still an impressive lot, are protected by steel cages.
An Expedition to Track Rock Gap
At six a.m., we arrived at the summit of the mountain. As we approached it, the heavens, which before for several days and nights had worn a brightened countenance, began to scowl and threaten; we advanced with a quickened pace to the foot of the rock and spread out our breakfast on the "table of stone," poured out a libation to appease the wrath of Jupiter, drank a few appropriate sentiments, and then, with chisel and hammer, commenced the resurrection of one of the tracks. Notwithstanding, I believe I possess as little superstition as anyone, yet I could not suppress a strange sensation that pervaded me. No sooner did we arrive on the consecrated ground than it began to threaten, and the first stroke of the hammer in the sacrilegious act of raising the track of a human being was responded to by a loud peal of thunder; the clouds continued to thicken condense, attended with the most awful lightning, when soon a deluge of rain was precipitated upon our offending heads. I continued, however, to labor incessantly until I succeeded in disintegrating the impression of a youth's foot, which I carefully wrapped up, and sounded a retreat, still however, looking back . . . in momentary expectation of seeing a legion of exasperated ghosts issuing forth to take their vengeance upon the infidel who would presume to disturb the relics of the dead. As soon as we passed the confines of the mountain, rain ceased, the sun broke out, and all nature resumed her cheerful aspect. -Matthew F. Stevenson, September 3, 1834

[ID: Seven pictures of a creeping cucumber plant and several of its fruits.
The first three pictures show fruits, both ripe and unripe hanging on the plant. The fruits are small green ovals that range from light to dark green with light spots, like tiny cucumbers, to smooth black. The leaves are light green and spiky. A fw tiny yellow flowers are visible.
The next four pictures show a white hand holding several ripe fruits, then holding them up to unripe fruits to show the difference. The last picture shows a different handful of ripe fruits that are partly dried and winkled, all of them solid black.
End ID.]
Creeping cucumbers that are being collected to save seed from from our plant, which we took as a cutting from a wild plant two years ago. The original plant, unfortunately, has been murdered by McDonalds, so this is all that remains. I will make sure some of the seeds are planted in the wild to continue the genetic line. 🫡 [a saluting emoji].
The ripe fruits from this species are not safe to eat, they have extreme laxative properties when eaten by people, but are eaten by many other types of wild animals. We are only harvesting them to save seeds.
The unripe fruits, the green ones with the spots, are safe to eat, and as their name implies, taste like tiny cucumbers. Because this is just a tiny itty bitty cousin of the domestic cucumber.
This species is native to North America, and if you're in or around Savannah, Georgia, at the very least, you can find it in a lot of places if you know what to look for.
We have it in a pot with a tomato cage, but eventually we'll have to get it a proper trellis, as these can grow big enough to climb up trees and hang their fruits 30ft overhead.
fun fact - fire ants will also be happy to eat the ripe berries, which I know because of trying to save seeds from one that had climbed a tree and had to wait until its ripe fruits fell down.
The scientific name is Melothria pendula, because the fruits hang from the vine like the pendulum of a clock.
A lot of scammers online will call them "mouse melons" and photoshop the inside to be red and claim they're tiny watermelons. Do not fall for it.
To save seeds, as with many small fruits, you place the ripe fruits in a bowl or cup of cool water, squish them, pick out the skins, and strain the seeds through a mesh, or if they're too small for that, drain off most of the water and put them on a paper plate. Let them dry somewhere for at least a week, preferably longer, then store them with a label marking the species, date (at least mark the year), and if applicable, the specific plant they came from.
The seeds for these are little solid yellow-white disks.
We started this clone from pieces of stem buried in soil. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, so take multiple stems (if the main plant is big enough not to hurt it, don't try cloning little babies) and try with multiple containers.

Thriving With Fires The northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) quail is known as a fire bird. With a round body, dappled feathers, and distinct whistle, the charismatic quail thrives in the frequently burned pine wood savannas and open forests of the U.S. Southeast. In March 2023, burning in the region was under way. In the Southeast, fire has long been used as a tool to manage pine forests and forest undergrowth. Prescribed (or controlled) burns are conducted in spring to improve natural plant and animal communities. The fires also prevent the accumulation of pine needles and underbrush which may feed more uncontrolled wildland fires. On March 14, 2023, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this image of smoke streaming from several fires in Alabama, Georgia, and northern Florida. Red dots indicate the locations of active fire detections observed by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the NASA-NOAA Suomi NPP satellite. Some of the fires were likely prescribed burns planned and implemented by state and national forest management agencies. “Most landscapes in North America are fire-adapted,” said Jessica McCarty, the associate program manager of NASA’s Applied Sciences Wildland Fire program and branch chief of biospheric sciences at NASA’s Ames Research Center. “These prescribed burns benefit a lot of different species, from trees to birds and reptiles.” McCarty’s research using MODIS data has found that cropland and prescribed fires were responsible for 77 percent of the total active fire detections within the U.S. and were most abundant in the South and Southeast. An example of a fire-dependent species is the Table Mountain pine (Pinus pungens), native to the Appalachian Mountains. Table Mountain pine have serotinous cones, which are glued shut with a strong resin. Only when fire sweeps through the forest does the resin melt, opening the cone and releasing seeds to the environment for reproduction. Other pines, such as the longleaf pine, need an open canopy and bare ground for saplings to survive, making them dependent on frequent fires. In the MODIS image, smoke can be seen coming from the Talladega National Forest in the southern foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. According to the U.S. Forest Service, a prescribed burn of 1,200 acres in the Oakmulgee District of the forest was planned for March 14. The Oakmulgee District of the Talladega is home to Alabama’s largest contiguous longleaf pine forest. Another plume of smoke can be seen coming from Conecuh National Forest, near Alabama’s southern border. The Forest Service planned a prescribed burn on March 14 of 3,299 acres within the forest. Fires in southeastern pines limit the density of the trees in the forest, allowing for growth of grass and flowering plant (forb) species well-suited for bobwhite quail nesting and cover. “Prescribed burns typically occur in Georgia during the transition from the dormant season to the growing season, in March and April, to stimulate lush vegetation for brood-rearing bobwhites,” said David Weber, a research assistant at the University of Georgia and the Tall Timbers research station. Weber has been studying the effects of prescribed fire on the bobwhite quail and recently found that frequent burning (typically every one to two years) promoted healthy quail populations.
