Untitled Wednesday Library Series, Part 131
The year is 2000, and you’re either Dan Hipes, Dale R. Jackson, Katy NeSmith, David Printiss, or Karla Brandt. A book with your name on it, Field Guide to the Rare Animals of Florida, has just been accepted for publication thanks to a couple of Garys — Evink and Knight— in the state DoT and the Florida Natural Areas Inventory (FNAI), respectively. Maybe you’re pretty excited. Maybe you’re not. Maybe you’re worried about the copyright situation, which won’t be resolved for another year. I don’t know, I’m not you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The How
The year is 2023, and you’re either me or @krieper. You’re walking through a thrift shop and see this book, still in two layers of plastic wrap, sitting on a shelf next to a dubiously salable woodcarving. If you’re krieper, you recognize a couple of beasties on the cover. If you’re me, you recognize the title typeface as an Ed Benguiat joint. Either way, you think it looks pretty neat.
The Text
Well, it’s a state field guide. Corals, mussels, snails, crayfish and shrimp, mayflies, dragonflies, beetles, butterflies, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, all with info on IDing, similar species, habitat, range, and status. Each (sub)species represented was or is ‘rare’; most were or are under imminent threat of extinction. Data come mostly from FNAI records.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Object
The real stars of the show are the (always doting and often even useful) photographs and drawings. These come from dozens of different people, but a shockingly large plurality are courtesy of one Barry Mansell. Barry, you’re my hero.
A little fragile, as evidenced by the slight cup ring sustained (somehow) through the wrapping at some point in the foregoing decades. Also very glossy. Sorry about that.
You have have noticed this is in a three-ring binder. When we picked it up, the block wasn’t even installed — we had to unwrap and click it in ourselves. Very satisfying. Very fun era-typical typesetting, too, though there are about two too many fonts going on. Readable if textbookish. Did you know ITC Korinna was used to subtitle Devo’s ‘Whip It’?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Why, Though?
First, because it makes me happy to give something this pretty its due affection. More than two decades in just-off-the-presses condition is a new record for me; I hope other copies of this — there can’t have been many — got to better homes. It’s a great example of a well-funded, administratively supported side-product of slow, uncharismatic research, though nothing can save it from the fact that it’s also a production of the same systems that made it necessary (to the extent that it is so).
To that point, and second, because it’s several flavors of violent upset at once. ‘Only’ a few dozen species have been delisted from US rolls since this was printed, and a quick cross-check agains the ToC came up blank, but that’s not especially the point. The invert roster is underrepresented and shrinking fast; specialized local subspecies like this displays are faring badly, especially in the Keys. This feels like a yearbook from the 50s or a last-ditch scribble more than a field guide, really. Maybe that’s worth something.

Yippee I'm so excited to draw stuff for @standswap-september!!! It's my first time doing something like this, ooh fun! Here's some La Squadra standswaps to start off with! I'm not sure of stand abilities yet, but I have some ideas for personalities and stuff! I hope to do more of La Squadra, but I'm still sorting out designs. Without further ado, introducing...
Uva (Babyface) & Electric Friend (Melone) Stand namesake: Are 'Friends' Electric? by Gary Numan
Specchio (Man in the Mirror) & Smooth Criminal (Illuso) Stand namesake: Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson
Tonno (Beach Boy) & Ocean Man (Pesci) Stand namesake: Ocean Man by Ween
More information under cut!
Uva (he/him) is a spunky, impulsive teenager who wound up in Passione after killing his abusive mother. He has a passion for genetics and technology, and is very clever despite first impressions.
Before being put with La Squadra, his only company was his stand: Electric Friend. While the computer is part of the stand, the actual stand is its inhabitant. Electric Friend is sentient, fully autonomous computer malware that communicates with Uva. It gives him advice and talks to him like a friend. Strangely, it seems to be much more mature and is like an entire person of its own. This means it also can choose to not listen to Uva and cause trouble on its own. Although the computer is its home, it can infect and manipulate other devices.
Specchio (he/him) is outwardly quiet and stoic, but he reveals himself to be bold, confident, and a touch dramatic when he gets fired up. Uva thinks he's the coolest. He's especially cunning, and knows how to get under people's skin to make them bend and break. Sometimes he picks on his teammates, but he'll get defensive if anyone else does the same. He's the only one allowed to do that!
Smooth Criminal is a very expressive stand, and it often emotes and moves along with Specchio. It seems smug a lot of the time. Other times, it helps Specchio intimidate enemies. Its ponytails always float around it.
Tonno (he/him) is La Squadra's newest member, brought in by his mentor Culatello (The Grateful Dead). He's nervous about this whole hitman business, but he's always trying to prove himself. He's actually very talented and has sharp intuition and focus, which Culatello encourages as much as he can. Sometimes he gets himself into trouble because he's always trying to show the others that he's capable. He's very anxious, but he tries to hide that to appear strong and cool like the others.
Although not biologically related, Tonno thinks of Culatello as an older brother. He wants to make him proud!
His stand, Ocean Man, is a large fish that can swim through the air. While it's out, it's always by Tonno's side. Sometimes it lets him hold it, as emotional support. It's surprisingly cuddly! It shares Tonno's nervousness, and tends to swim in circles and twitch around when it gets scared. However, it can still be a vicious protector when it needs to be.

Tumblr media
Snippet from Chapter 25: Dumpster
They’ve been searching the scene of the accident for about an hour now with no luck. Klaus is struggling to give up the search, even though he knows it’s futile, but Ben gave up long ago. If the phone fell out of his pocket, it was probably stolen. And if it wasn’t, it was probably run over by a truck or a passing car in the hours after the crash.
Still, it’s Klaus’ only lifeline - his only proof that Tilda was having an affair with Gary and that she had the strongest motive to kill him. He can’t give up that easily.
“Klaus, it’s not here. This is stupid,” says Ben, drawing the syllables out into a frustrated groan.
“If you’re not going to help, can you at least shut up?”
Klaus scrambles over the side of a nearby dumpster and sticks the top half of his body inside. It smells like death. Rotting fish and decomposing filth. He tears into one of the bags and gags on the intensifying odour.
“Klaus? Is that you?”
That’s not Ben. That’s a female voice. Familiar and gentle, punctuated with a probing inflection at the end. The way she says his name sends a familiar tingle through the base of his skull.
“Sarah?” He jumps down from the dumpster. She looks as perfectly put-together as always: a long wool coat in a dangerously light grey, her silky blonde bob reflecting the last of the late afternoon light, knee-high leather boots that look as difficult to walk in as they look expensive. Klaus looks down at his My Little Pony t-shirt, now grubby from the dumpster, and attempts to dust himself off. “What are you doing here?”

My dnd group overthrows the government
Had the best dnd session ever last week and felt the need to share it with someone. I know this is a break from my usual content, so feel free to skip.
So this is part of a long-running campaign that is very character driven and involves several different worlds that we travel between. BBEG started out as your standard cult-leader-trying-to-resurrect-world-eating-monster, but gradually evolved into DiCaprio's character from Django Unchained due to the GM's southern accent. Party and BBEG are racing to recover the artifacts necessary to resurrect said world-eating monster.
Party tracked BBEG to an island city-state. Our rogue is from there, and informs us that they just went through a bloody revolution. Revolution overthrows oppressive monarchy, power-hungry types within the revolution subvert the movement and take over, new government becomes just as oppressive as the monarchy they just overthrew. Standard. The city is currently in the grip of a Great Terror style purge, with mass executions happening on the regular.
Basically the first thing our Bloodhunter does is steal a drunk homeless guy's blood and apply a tracking spell. Bloodhunter is a homebrew race that's basically the anthropomorphic personification of a book. He's chronologically three years old, never really been out of the house before, niave fish-out-of-water, we all know this archetype.
We meet with one of Rogue's contacts and decide it's best to avoid drawing the attention of either the revolutionaries or the loyalists, instead remaining inconspicuous while we search for the McGuffin and generally staying out of the conflict. We're pretty sure the McGuffin is at the bottom of the ocean, but Contact knows of a scientist (recently executed by the new regime) who might have been building a bathysphere. Contact provides us with false papers saying that we're revolutionary inspectors and sends us to search the scientist's house.
Bloodhunter immediately dashes off on his own. According to the tracker, Gary (the homeless dude) hasn't moved all night, and Bloodhunter is concerned for his safety. He follows the tracker to the local police station. Between the fake inspector's papers and a few good deception rolls, he is able to convince the guards that he (Bloodhunter) is a high-ranking agent within the revolution, and that the guy they have in the drunk tank is actually a dangerous monarchist spy who they need to hand over to him immediately.
The guards bring Gary out chained up like Hannibal Lecter. Bloodhunter is fully committed to the role at this point, and over the course of the conversation he points out a random building on a map as the HQ of a counter-revolutionary conspiracy.
Meanwhile, the rest of the party is investigating the scientist's house. Bloodhunter shows up with Gary in tow, and tells us how he spent his afternoon. The party is horrified, pointing out that he likely sentenced whoever lived at the random house he pointed out to death. After thinking it through, Bloodhunter is also suitably horrified. Gary sees the map we're all referring to and screams that Bloodhunter sent the police to HIS house (turns out he's not homeless, just an alcoholic) where his wife and children live. Bloodhunter freaks, grabs Gary, and goes running off to fix his mistake.
Paladin (me) has some backstory trauma related to inquisitions and false executions, so he tags along to help Bloodhunter.
The trio arrives at Gary's house just ahead of the secret police. Bloodhunter offers to stay and misdirect the police while Paladin gets the family to safety, which Paladin respects the hell out of.
Paladin hurries Gary and co. back to Contact's safehouse, then rushes back to save Bloodhunter. Paladin kicks down the door, only to find that Bloodhunter has convinced the secret police that he is the Black Book, the revolution's greatest spy and right hand of the revolutionary leader. Of course they've never heard of him, but that's just because he's such a great spy. He introduces the utterly dumbfounded Paladin as his righthand man, Victor the Executioner.
DM is making him roll deception for basically every statement that comes out of his mouth. Bloodhunter is rolling moderately well, like in the 10-14 range (modified), but he beats every one of the DM's opposing rolls by the skin of his teeth.
Rather than disengage, Bloodhunter claims to have uncovered a counter-revolutionary plot and demands to be taken directly to Leader. The police comply.
Important side note: During our last encounter with the BBEG, he perma-killed two party members, one by literally wiping her out of existence, and the other by brainwashing him into acting as the final boss of that arc (both players had asked to be written out in suitably dramatic fashion, but the rest of the party got blindsided). Paladin was forced to kill the brainwashed Boss in order to save the rest of the party.
Earlier, the party had uncovered clues indicating that BBEG may have inserted himself as one of Leader's advisors. Paladin goes along with Bloodhunter in the hopes of getting close to BBEG.
The secret police escort the two back to the palace where Leader has set up his HQ. When they are taken to Leader, he is presiding over a mass execution by way of burning at the stake.
His trauma now fully activated, Paladin uses the "I'm a fan of your work, could I shake your hand?" routine to get close, then stabs Leader through the heart.
DM has speedrun all five stages of grief and is now fully invested.
Paladin turns on the two mysterious hooded men who had been accompanying Leader, assuming them to be agents of BBEG. Then one of them drops his glamour, revealing BBEG himself. He proceeds to taunt Paladin for his role in Boss-teamate's death from behind the cover of a magic shield.
The room is in chaos, the crowd is stampeding out, guards are rushing in, Paladin is incoherent with rage attempting to hack through BBEG's shield. The rest of the party is looking on in horror, still chilling at the scientist's house without an in-game excuse to come to the rescue.
With his cover blown, BBEG teleports out and leaves Bloodhunter and Paladin to the guards. Paladin wrecks the first group of guards, letting the last man escape at Bloodhunter's insistence, but it's clear that the room will be crawling with soldiers any minute now.
Paladin offers to stay behind and hold them off, but Bloodhunter instead demands that Paladin hit him and give him one of his (Paladin's) personal belongings.
At this point Paladin isn't going to question Bloodhunter's plan, so he hits him, hands over his backup weapon, and slips out the back.
The guards arrive. Bloodhunter holds up Paladin's bloody glaive and claims that his loyal righthand man, Victor the Executioner, was a double-agent who just murdered Leader. Not to worry though -- The Black Book killed Victor himself, and as Leader's most trusted confidante, Book is prepared to carry on the revolution in his stead.
Bloodhunter is instructed to roll deception, then persuasion, both with disadvantage. He passes both.
Meanwhile Paladin is fighting his way through the lower levels of the palace. He finds the holding cells, empty except for a half-starved child. Said child turns out to be the crown prince of the deposed monarchy. Paladin breaks him out and heads for the exit.
He slips out into the courtyard to find Bloodhunter giving an absolute barnburner of a speech (which the player is adlibing on the spot) about how the revolution has lost its way, but the Black Book is here to remind them of their ideals, to create a truly just government by the people and for the people. As a true son of the revolution, he will guide them down the path to glorious freedom!
Bloodhunter has to continually roll persuasion to keep the crowd's attention on him and ensure that they don't notice the six-foot-tall fully armored Vengeance Paladin sneaking out the back. It works.
Paladin staggers back to the scientist's house covered in other people's blood and carrying a traumatized child. Bloodhunter shows up a few minutes later, proclaiming that this has been the best day ever and he's sort of the head of the country now? His first act as leader is too decree that Gary's family gets free food for life.
I am pumped for the next session!

A Gift For Yuletide: another Barovian Tale
So, there I was one wintry night ending a shift at the cash register, when in walked through the front door none other than the Devil Strahd’s very own consort, Escher. I bowed and said, “master Escher, to what do I owe the pleasure?” As I bowed behind the register, my right hand fished for the crossbow with the silvered bolt in it.
“Spare me the pleasantries, peasant,” he laughed whimsically. “Also, I will forgive you for the weapon you are attempting to draw out if you will assist me on a quest.”
Welp, so much for that idea. Also, I realized just then that I forgot to change out the garlic overhanging the door ages ago. Note to self: get 2Wash2Furious, my ogre zombie, to change it out when Escher’s not looking.
“I need a gift for Strahd for Yuletide. He had a great abundance of gifts, and if I am to win his attention back, it needs to be something spectacular. Something, unique. Something coveted by all in Barovia.”
“No, you don’t mean….” I gasped in genuine alarm.
“Yes, that. Pack your gear, we are going to the Amber Temple.”
“Gary, take over for a bit.”
I probably should have planned better. I forgot that Mount Ghakis is a) high up, and b) cold and snowy. I had thrown on a pair of thick shoes and one of those cheap, knock-off elf cloaks they make in Sithicus for tourists.
We climbed the slopes, avoiding hungry wolf packs. When raiders ambushed us, Escher dispatched them with ease. At Tsolenka Pass a great bird flew overhead, their wings blotting out the sky for a moment. Escher immune to the cold and to the dread of this place dismissed it with a wave. “Try making fried chicken out of that thing?” I chuckled half-heartedly. How in the Nine Hells was I expected to haul that thing all the way back?
Besides, a lingering doubt in my mind was growing: once I help him obtain his Yuletide present, what’s to stop him from betraying me and leaving me behind in the Temple? Or worse.
We came at last to the fabled Amber Temple, which despite its name was a place of dread and spiritual poverty. Escher pushed open the doors with ease. I followed behind, feebly cradling my crossbow, my only real defense.
As we carefully navigated the halls of the temple, avoiding traps thanks to Escher’s knowledge of the place, I asked him, “sir, with all your wealth and financial independence, what’s to stop you from finding a more … compelling gift elsewhere without risking our necks for this one?”
“Because, this one is one of a kind, and will never be made again. Your long-term planning and foresight to avoid printing more was perhaps a wise choice. Scarcity brings value, no?”
I shrugged.
We came to the room we sought. There, in the middle was a ring of fire, waist high, surrounding a scrap of paper that was suspended in the air. Even from this distance I knew the words “One Free Deluxe Chicken and Waffle Meal” were scrawled on it by my own hand. The BCnW Coupon Supreme: my greatest folly.
We approached the flames and Escher reached over it, toward the Coupon, when the flames erupted and consumed his hand and forearm. In pain he jerked his hand back and it was a charred stump. Escher, wide-eyed, stared at it agape. “Powerful magic guards this relic,” he said.
“We have a difficult decision to make,” I said. “Someone has placed a powerful ward here, and I have no way to get to it. How much do you really want to win back Strahd’s favor?”
Escher looked at the Coupon Supreme longingly and then at his hand. It would heal in time, but could he afford to risk anything else?
“Screw it,” he finally said. “My self-respect is not worth this. Let’s get him one of those crappy, lead-painted ornaments you sell.”
“Works for me.”
… and so, deep in the Amber Temple the Coupon Supreme waits for a brave, powerful adventurer willing to risk it all to save 1sp and 2cp (coffee refills not included).
A (Not So) Merry Yuletide to Everyone!

【 TRAINEE MISSION 012 / PROJECT ORIGIN AUDITION 】             ✎... 500 words
despite being blessed with good looks and a brain, being creative wasn’t yichen’s forte. when it was announced that he had to come up with a character for the audition, his usual sharp brain became blank. as much as he wanted his persona to be completely different, it would take too much effort and creativity. hence, he resorted to the internet for some inspiration. yichen managed to stumble across a video on youtube, one that would aid in his musical homework.
“hello, i’m xue yichen and i’ll be presenting my ideal character today for the musical,” he greets the staff with a polite bow. from behind his back, he reveals an a5-sized paper with a drawing that resembles a mind map. the label ‘yichen in an alternate universe’ was circled in thick, red ink with lines branching out to represent his public persona, magic power and his knight’s contributions. “i know i’m still not fluent in korean so i hope this diagram can help make my explanations clearer.”
if he cannot be creative, why not tweak a little of his own personality instead? his ideal persona, the person he wished he could have become. “this character is a warrior, one that isn’t afraid to go out to the frontlines to fight,” he began, pointing to the branch that says ‘his personality’. “but since he doesn’t have a strong physique, he’s often seen as a support. he’s quite an intelligent fellow so i can imagine him helping to strategize or prepare materials. but if there is a need for extra hands on the battlefield, you bet he’ll be the first to volunteer. which brings us to my next point.” his finger taps on the branch that says ‘super power’.
while searching for ideas, youtube’s algorithm coincidentally recommended him one of running man’s older episodes. the one where they had superpowers. that gave him the idea. “since my character’s a short, lanky boy like me, i thought it would do him justice if i give him a power that can be useful as both an attacker and a support. running man episode 74, the one where they had superpowers. just like gary sunbae-nim, my character will have the power of duplication, or the ability to create many versions of himself. each clone has a mind of their own but they share the same purpose as the main controller. for example, he’s tasked to gather supplies for camp. so one clone would head off into the woods to gather wood while two of them would look for a river to catch some fish.”
his finger taps on the last branch, ‘contributions’. “besides helping out with strategizing, i can imagine him being the perfect baiter when the group needs a distraction or when they need extra help. even though he’s not the most talkative person, his intelligence and quick-wit would surely be an asset to the group. that’s all for my presentation. thank you for your time.” yichen bows at the panel and leaves.
