i am neutral towards galladads (more so...towards no), but every so often i tangle with my personal takes (or what i'd love to see) and i wanna share. strap in, it's long. pt. 1

Ian doesn't push the thought of kids. They had a conversation about it after s11x12, but it took some time, it wasn't immediate. Basically, I think Ian relished the idea of being an uncle for a while. After all, it's always Mickey before anything.

They took care of Franny, Freddie (+upcoming kiddo), and Liam when they were asked to as favors. It subconsciously became this mental practice for them. Some unspoken tension kept rising, cause they felt the other was thinking the same thing but went unmentioned. Partially cause Ian decided not to press, and doing so meant breaking that threshold.

I think Mickey brought it up one day probably, Ian felt somewhat defensive at first, but since he always reminds Mickey about the importance of "communication," it'd bite him in the ass, so he gave in and spoke his truth. They had another conversation about it that ended in an agreement to see a "shrink." They started going, it was a deconstruction of years of trauma, fears, repressed emotions, y'know the drill.

Considering that they were between 25-27 when the show ended, I think they engaged in "intense" therapy for like 5-7 years maybe. Trying to talk through the bulks of it, for the purpose of parenting in the near future.

Through that time, they first contacted Debbie, had thoroughly researched artificial insemination (pls mickey thinking he would have to bang Debbie makes me cry 💀), had a lengthy talk with her. I haven't reached shameless far enough to know Debbie's character, but I think she probably gives them informed advice, a lot of "you guys sure you wanna do this??" And I don't think it stems from a place of objection, more so worry. I like to think she eventually caves in and accepts to help them when they're ready. She loves Ian, Ian loves Franny and Debbie (fuck JW for making it seem like he doesn't in s11) and Mickey and Debbie are besties.

(this is a huge reach but I ponder nonetheless) After thinking of Debbie, I think maybe Ian thinks of Mandy. I fully believe (like many other people) that Ian kept in touch with Mandy from time to time ever since she left, and at some point encouraged her and Mickey to reconnect. It's a slow process, but he knows both of them needed it and yearned for it deep down.

He breaks the news to her that they're gonna be parents at some point, sort of fills her in on the process and the years of therapy, gets Mickey to tell her anecdotes too or whatever. The thing is, at some point in the conversation, he yaps about how he has always wanted two, a boy and a girl (because Ian is a dork like that). That Debbie is only gonna do this once for now because...well that was the agreement, ofc, and he just doesn't wanna overwhelm Mick with two kids of their own even though that's what they practically baby sit.

Jokingly (at first), Mandy offers herself as a surrogate in case they aim for another kid. Ian sheepishly declines, that he couldn't ask her after everything she's been through, but Mandy reassures him that shit is different now. Times have changed, and that even though it's a big deal, she'd comply. Ian says he'll think about it, talk with Mick in case shit does happen as to not spook him. It was a pleasant talk.

He talks to Mickey and at first he doesn't know how to handle the thought of two kids, one of them from Mandy, and he almost feels like all this time in therapy could crumble down at the thought of Mandy being a surrogate. They have a long ass talk.

At the end Mickey affirms that he is open to the responsibility of two kids. The whole thing goes like Ian telling him he doesn't have to do this, that he's fine with just one and that he doesn't have to comply just because Ian would love two kids, and Mickey being like "all these years and you still don't get it through your thick skull that you ain't making me do anything I don't want to" (affectionately ofc). He reassures Ian that if he's making these decisions with him it's because he wants to, and he admits he owes a lot of it to that "shrink" they go to he's come to appreciate. It was a lovely conversation tbh and many fears and goals were shared between them.

New Gallavich Headcanon Unlocked!

Whenever Ian and Mickey have sex/do anything sexual, they always hold hands.

This originated in the very beginning when Ian was trying to get Mickey to open up and would use any opportunity to do things to help push those boundaries, like holding hands. Mickey never stopped him, but he also never embraced it.

After Ian came back in s4, Mickey started embracing it and would occasionally grab for his hand. He would still swear that he just wanted something to grip, but Ian knew better.

After Mickey came out, he started initiating it just as much, making sure he always had Ian's hand no matter what they were doing.

When they met up again in s7, Mickey held to Ian's hand religiously. He knew there was a high chance Ian wouldn't end up coming with him and wanted as much time and as much contact as possible.

When they got together in prison, Mickey would get mad at Ian when he forgot and probably go try to shiv someone put of jealousy, swearing that they "looked at Ian wrong."

Once they got out, Mickey stopped getting upset, but would simply pat Ian somewhere on his body until he got the hint.

Now that they're married, it's just an unconscious practice in their life. Neither Mickey nor Ian even think about it anymore, almost like breathing.

Thinking about the fact that while in prison, Mickey sought out advice from Terry's "friend" Nana. (I think that's his name. It's on his knuckles, and that's what they call him, at least)

But the fact that Mickey chose that particular person to get advice from. Advice about his boyfriend. Like, this guy is locked away from the others, obviously only among the other white supremacists like himself. His gang and ultimately his family on the inside. This man believes the same things that Terry believes, and yet when Mickey admits that he is obviously gay, Nana is just like, "Okay, how can I help?"

There are no derogatory remarks thrown at him, no death threats even. Nana takes the question and his answer completely serious. And it's good advice. It's the right advice.

But it makes me curious as to who Nana is to Mickey. Sure, they know him through Terry, but I can't help but feel like there's more to it. Cause like, why him? Are we to believe that Mickey just picked a random "friend" and fellow gang member of his father? A person who could most likely have the same beliefs regarding Mickey's sexuality. And are we also supposed to believe that Terry didn't get word that his son was in prison? With Ian?? And Terry didn't put a fucking hit out??

I don't know. I think maybe Nana was around when Mickey was young. I've always believed he's the one who gave all the Milkoviches their knuckle tats. Maybe he had a soft spot for Mickey? Saw the way Terry treated him and, out of some weird respect, didn't say anything but always disagreed with it.

I don't really know what I'm getting at here but this has been clawing at the back of my mind for a week and I wanted it out.

they both have very different music tastes, but will listen to whatever the other one puts on

ian has a more diverse music taste and listens to: justin timberlake/nsync (iykyk), the white stripes, the black eyed peas, radiohead, jeff buckley, the smashing pumpkins, lana del rey (sorry you can’t change my mind), tyler the creator, and lady gaga (IN SECRET)

mickey doesn’t have as diverse music taste, and listens to: tool, christian death, limp bizkit, my chemical romance, alice in chains, rage against the machine, eminem, nirvana, the smashing pumpkins, black sabbath, and also lady gaga (DEFINITELY IN SECRET ONLY IAN KNOWS AND IT WILL STAY THAT WAY)

a year later once their lease is up, they buy a small, cheap, southside house and move in there and they are both more happy

it took a lot of convincing by tami, but eventually they were allowed to babysit fred and lip’s child #2 (i hc it’s a girl named fuckin’ beatrice or something after tami’s mom but idk)

ian likes dc and star wars movies, and mickey likes marvel (he has no opinion on star wars but he referred to han solo as hot once)

at their wedding, there was a reserved seat for monica, with a photo of her printed out on it (i heard this from someone else idk who and i saw this at a wedding once)

the alibi ends up becoming a cop bar which makes mickey EXTREMELY unhappy

ian bartended at the alibi multiple times since he has already been a bartender and whenever he did mickey tried to get free drinks

they end up having some contact with yevgeny because they both still talk with svetlana

mickey came with ian to monica’s grave once and later asked why the tombstone was cracked, when ian told him about the store he promptly texted carl and applauded him

these are a few married Gallavich headcanons I have:

When they first move into their apartment Mickey bitches about the electricity bill in the summer and doesn't want to run the a/c since they've never even had a/c before but then he realizes if it's cold in the bedroom at night Ian can spoon him all summer and then he decides he likes a/c

Ian really wants to learn to cook. He buys a bunch of cookbooks and watches youtube videos but the first few things he makes aren't very good and he gets frustrated and upset and wants to give up. But Mickey knows it's important to him so he starts hanging out in the kitchen while Ian cooks and helps him chop everything and reads through the directions with him. It still takes a while for things to turn out right but Ian loves cooking with Mickey so much he keeps trying and eventually turns into a very good cook and he and Mickey prepping dinner together in the evenings turns into one of their favorite routines.

Ian goes through a bad depressive phase at one point and his doctor tells Mickey that getting a pet might help Ian out. Mickey convinces Ian he's the one who wants the dog since he knows Ian will get upset if he feels like they're only getting one because of his mental health. They go to the shelter and find a pitbull/lab mix who Mickey loves and Ian begrudgingly agrees. They name her Lady. Mickey ends up being an awesome dog trainer and teaches her to do a bunch of cool tricks. Ian is hesitant at first but slowly ends up falling in love with her. He and Lady go for runs every morning and he buys her the fanciest dog food he can find at the store. Without realizing it after a few months he's the happiest he's ever been.

On the anniversary of Terry's death Mickey gets really upset and goes out and gets shitfaced drunk. The bartender calls Ian from Mickey's phone and Ian goes and finds him. Ian brings him home and rubs his back while he throws up in the toilet and cries about his dad not loving him. Ian helps him get into pajamas and then holds him all night. In the morning Mickey tells Ian that even though he's sad about his relationship with his dad Ian is the best thing that ever happened to him and he's so glad he gets to be who he is, even though Terry didn't accept him.

Lip and Mickey end up being friends, even though they don't admit it. Mickey goes back to the Gallagher house at least once a week because even though he likes their apartment now, he still misses the South Side and needs a break. Lip's always there working on the house so they end up sharing beers and bitching about life together. Even once Lip eventually sells the house and gets a place with Tami Mickey still goes over once a week. Ian tells them they're best friends but they both say they're not they just happen to drink beer in the same place sometimes.

Once they both get off probation they take a trip to Mexico together for their anniversary. Mickey shows Ian where he lived and the beaches he would visit. Ian cries a lot at first and feels really guilty but Mickey tells him he has never been mad about it and he's proud of Ian for doing what was best for him at the time. They drink tequila together and swim in the ocean and Ian gets a really bad sunburn that Mickey teases him for but rubs aloe on him in the hotel room that night.

ever since i saw this scene, i have decided that it is actually canon that Ian has to be touching Mickey in some way like all the time

Ian comes downstairs to Mickey making coffee? he immediately makes his way over, draping his arms around his shoulders.

in the kitchen with the other Gallaghers? Ian has to squeeze his shoulder as he walks past.

at the dinner table? His leg is is rested against Mickey's under the table.

passing by him as he leaves the bathroom in the mornings and Mickey takes it over? a quick pat to his shoulder or chest is necessary

when he wakes up for his morning run and Mickey is still sleeping? a quick soothing rub through his tuft of black hair and a quick peck to his temple is a must.

Ian feels slightly anxious or notices Mickey feeling anxious while they're in public together? a quick squeeze to the forearm or leg is a requirement!

mickey is the same way, he's just more of an in-private type of person. but ian? must touch husband at all times

I have been seeing people on Twitter say they've gotten their significant others a different kind of "flowers" this year: weed. What if Ian and Mickey do this? I can see Mickey hearing about this idea and giving Ian some kind of really pricey, good quality weed for Valentine's Day for them to smoke together that night. Maybe he even says something like "flowers are gay." It ends up making for an extra mindblowing evening. But honestly, I believe Mickey still gets Ian flowers, too. Hey, good morning! I'm doing well, thanks for asking! What a fun bunch of questions! I'm going to do my best answering all of them.

Ian's nicknames and pet names for Mickey all depend on the circumstance, but I can see him endearingly calling him grumpy when he's trying to get him to do something. "C'mon, grumpy, get out of bed, I made breakfast." But also sweetheart? Ooooh he calls him sweetheart when the sex is particularly tender, or if Mickey's all floaty and subspacey. Oooh. Yes. Mickey's nicknames for Ian tend to be on the sweeter side, but Ian's favorite is stud. It just makes him feel sexy, he always preens a little bit when he hears it.

I always thought of Mickey as getting those knuckle tats when he was like 15. It was certainly a posturing thing, getting them to impress his dad and make himself seem tough. But also, he was a literal child and just thought it was cool. It's a basement tattoo, definitely. A family member who should not have been tattooing anyone, let alone a 15-year-old, did it for him in the Milkovich living room with a pawn shop tattoo gun. Shit was janky as fuck, and yes they got infected almost immediately and it's a wonder they ever healed.

Ian's competency kink is so real. Mickey just knowing how to take care of shit is the hottest thing in the world to him. Handling their business, fixing shit around the house, stuff like that. Mickey can repair a leaky faucet and Ian's on him instantly. But for Mickey, I think we all know he's got that crime kink. Ian sneaking shit into his pockets while they're grocery shopping is the kinda thing that does it for him, but holy fuck nothing will ever top him stealing that ambulance.

Oooh Mickey is not on instagram. It's fun to imagine, but realistically I can't see it. I have no idea what Ian's instagram handle is (I had a hard enough time thinking of my own lol), but he does pester Mickey about making one so they can follow each other. If Mickey eventually caves, his username is literally just his name and he keeps it blank. So now he can see all of Ian's garden pics before Ian has to wave his phone in his face to show them to him.

They get a cat. I am a cat dad Mickey kinda guy. My headcanons about this are what inspired my ao3 username, in fact! But yes they get a cat. Mickey intended to get a dog, but they leave the shelter with this weird little calico in a carrier, and Ian's like. Alright. This took a turn! Mickey hated the name the shelter gave her, so now her name is Steven Seagal. But Ian refuses to call her that. He calls her Stevie, and Mickey's like yeah that's cute I'll call her that too. She's Mickey's buddy. She likes both of them, but she's got this bond with Mickey that Ian just does not understand. It's perplexing. They just get each other. They're both kinda bitchy and moody, they both require affection on demand, they both yell when they need to be fed, etc. But yeah she perches delicately on his lap when he's on the couch and curls up on his pillow when he's in bed and sits on the toilet lid when he's in the shower. She likes Ian, too. But she understands Mickey's energy and gravitates to him.

I believe I've only seen one post about it a long time ago (and I think it was an anon ask but don't quote me on it) but it been thinking about this post for such a long time that I needed to make one myself -

I think Mickey changes his last name to Gallagher, and here's why:

Because Mickey has been a Gallagher for years. Ian had his back more than the Milkovichs ever did. Ian is his fucking (partner, lover,) family. you know?

Mickey liked a lot of traditional stuff about their wedding / marriage and I think he would like to share a last name. Since both of their last names are long... they decide to keep it simple. And the gallavich thing is too cringy for them.

Have you seen how smitten they look when they call each other 'husband'? Those two possessive sappy motherfucker would love it. Mickey loves being Ian's, Ian loves knowing Mickey is family in every way.

Milkovichs are known from being involved with illegal shit (remember the Paula comment? I also think that why Mickey got 15 years) and Mickey wants to distance himself from that. Him and Ian are trying to build a semi legal life together. 'Milkovich' is just adding to the stigma of southside ex-con he already has to deal with.

After Terry dies, Mickey wants to get rid of anything his father gave him. With Mandy gone, Colin and Iggy ran away a long time ago... he doesn't really have anyone but Sandy from his family. So no real attachment to it.

The Gallaghers are his fucking family. He might bitch about them all the time but they truly are his family and I think it would feel right for him. It took him no time to fit right in the Gallagher house, building relationships with all of Ian's siblings. By the time they get married he's feeling more at home than ever, even after years of being gone.

I don't think Ian would ever want to / feel comfortable calling himself a Milkovich. A. because of Terry and all the horrible things he did B. he never fit in with Mickey's family and C. because Gallaghers have a weird attachment to their last name, "we're Gallaghers" is a part of their personality. D. it would make Mickey's tattoo even weirder.

extra point- I don't headcanon them having their own kids, but possibly getting custody of Franny and possibly fostering kids when they're older. I think having one last name might make them feel more like a family.

as someone with bipolar disorder, my bedtime routine is super important to me. i have to do the same things every night and go to bed at the same time every night to maintain sleep hygiene. i think ian learns this over the years of managing his illness. plus, those meds can be pretty strong and put you to sleep pretty quickly! with working i think he tries to take his meds pretty consistently and he probably gets a consistent bedtime routine.

as for mickey, he goes to bed when ian does because he doesn’t like to be apart from him for too long. but he probably stays up later, playing games on his phone or scrolling until he’s sleepy. i don’t think he has any sort of bedtime routine, ian decides when it’s bedtime 😂

i definitely think that mickey texts like an old man. he uses basic emojis and doesn’t fully get internet slang and only has youtube and twitter. meanwhile, ian has twitter, instagram, youtube, tiktok, and he had facebook and tumblr at one point. the years that mickey was locked up effected him because he really doesn’t understand half of the shit debbie talks about when she talks about her stupid tiktoks and shit and he bullies carl and debbie when he sees them filming tiktoks. maybe by 2023 mickey has an instagram and a tiktok, but on tiktok he just watches shit about guns and stupid things like the cinnamon challenge, and on instagram he posted one picture and it’s a bad photo of ian that ian begged mickey to take down. he doesn’t have a profile picture, and his username is probably just “mickeymilkovich” or he just rages because he doesn’t get why everything needs to know his name and birthday and gender and ian rolls his eyes at his husband.
