The Lost Generation of Formula 1
Generation Why by Conan Gray is perhaps the anthem of F1's current lost generation.
So you may ask - what is the lost generation?
The lost generation is defined as the generation that reached maturity during and just after World War I, in which a high proportion of the men were killed during the war years. A lost generation is a generation with unfulfilled potential that missed out on the opportunities that were enjoyed by their predecessors and will be enjoyed by their successors.
For F1, at least currently, the lost generation would be drivers who entered Formula 1 sometime between 2010 and 2014.
Of the 2023 grid, the lost generation would include:
Nico Hulkenberg (2010)
Daniel Ricciardo (2011)
Sergio Perez (2011)
Valtteri Bottas (2013)
Kevin Magnussen (2014)
When they entered F1, they were hopeful of their chances of winning a championship. The years prior had been highly competitive with no easily identifiable dominance since the Schumacher/Ferrari era came to an end with Fernando Alonso's 2005 championship win. Alonso had won the 2006 championship, then Kimi Raikkonen won in 2007, Lewis Hamilton in 2008, and Jenson Button in 2009.
But as they were entering the Red Bull or Mercedes dominance was beginning. They became valued and experienced drivers during the Mercedes' dominance era. Now as they reach the latter years of their careers, another dominance has begun but with new championship hopefuls.
________________________________
Go wherever we want 'cause no one cares that we're gone
The lost generation of F1 isn't filled with the Lewis Hamiltons, Max Verstappens, Charles Leclercs, Fernando Alonsos, Sebastian Vettels, and so on.
Daniel Ricciardo is one of the most well-known drivers in F1 right now, Sergio Perez drives for the current dominant team, and Valtteri Bottas drove alongside Lewis Hamilton after the brocedes dissolution and throughout some of Mercedes' dominant years.
But in the end, they're not World Champions, nor are they in the conversation for being world champions as often as they once were. The expected challengers to Max Verstappen right now are assumed to be Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, George Russell, Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, Fernando Alonso (if he gets the right car), and so on.
With the exception of Daniel Ricciardo, who became the person who brought fans to the sport through the access he gave Drive to Survive from the start, people wouldn't necessarily care as much about the lost generation retiring as they would about Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, and Max Verstappen.
You and I haven't got much to lose
So do you wanna rot in your room like we always do?
Talk about how fast we grew
And all the big dreams that we won't pursue
Every F1 driver comes into the sport with hopes of winning - winning races, winning championships, just winning.
That is the big dream that they want to pursue and have dedicated their childhoods to. Giving their blood, sweat, and tears to this goal.
But with F1, timing is everything.
They entered Formula 1 as the Red Bull or Mercedes' dominance eras were beginning. From 2010 to 2013, Red Bull was the team to be in. Did others challenge Sebastian Vettel? Yes, but in the end, he was dominant. Then beginning in 2014, the Mercedes dominance era began with two highly competent and competitive drivers - Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
They grew into experienced drivers during the Mercedes' dominance era. From 2014 to 2016, the battle was always between the Mercedes drivers - a living Greek tragedy. And after that, the dominance was so clearly by just Lewis Hamilton.
And now, well we all know the story of the 2023 season. We are now in the era of Max Verstappen with a younger generation of drivers coming in to challenge him.
Bookended by dominant eras, F1's lost generation grew up quickly and never got to truly pursue the dreams and hopes they came into the sport with.
Why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why
We're livin' night to night
Why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why
Since we're bound to die, oh
Why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why
Oh, what's the use in trying?
Why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why,
And it's exactly why
The lost generation is living race to race, season to season. To keep their place in Formula 1, they need to show their value to the teams that they drive for.
They're not guaranteed a seat for as long as they may like in the way that proven world champions are. If Fernando Alonso wants to race well into his 40s and 50s, some team or another will provide him the race seat to continue on. He could have a horrible season and still be guaranteed a race seat unlike the members of the lost generation that need to keep showing their value.
For Haas, Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg bring two experienced drivers that aren't costing them millions in damage. Haas doesn't have the capacity to develop drivers so they need the experience offered by their current lineup and they don't have the ability to bring drivers with expected WDC potential. On a similar note, Valtteri Bottas brings experience and stability to Alfa Romeo/Sauber as they wait for Audi to come in.
Sergio Perez was brought in to help Max Verstappen's championship campaign from 2021 onwards and be there when Max Verstappen couldn't be to maximize points potential for the team. And while the current season has brought that into question, he was able to help Red Bull secure their first 1-2 in the WDC.
Daniel Ricciardo is perhaps the anomaly in this lineup. While he didn't win a championship, he made his mark on Formula 1 as a highly regarded driver and someone who is often cited by fans as the person who brought them to the sport. Daniel Ricciardo brings to AlphaTauri/Red Bull his marketability and experience. AlphaTauri has cited his arrival to the team as a resurgence in morale and form after a lackluster beginning of the year. There's also been new sponsor interest due to his return.
But they're bound to eventually leave the sport, and unfortunately, it will be sooner than later.
As time progressed, members of the lost generation left F1 for one reason or another until only 5 have remained.
Other notable members of this generation included:
Bruno Senna (2010)
Pastor Maldonado (2011)
Jean-Éric Vergne (2012)
Jules Bianchi (2013)
Marcus Ericsson (2014)
Daniil Kyvat (2014)
Alexander Rossi (2014)

I showed my friend, who knows almost nothing about f1 and has absolutely no filter, photos of each driver on the 2022 grid and made her name and give me her first impressions on them and 😭. She just said whatever came into her head at the time, none of this was really thought over :). Everything is under the cut since this is such a long post!
Max Verstappen: William Osbourne
italian or spanish vibes
slightly dark and broody vibes
takes racing very seriously
“He is either super nice or an absolute asshole, or maybe he’s both who knows.”
Sergio Perez: Kristopher
A little lost but everyone loves it
100% has compilations on youtube that are like “kristopher being kristopher for 8 minutes and 23 seconds”
Has spent so long in f1 that everyone is telling him to quit
Very enthusiastic and his fans are very loyal
Charles Leclerc: Alexio
“Damn he’s fine as hell!”
Hot, sexy, and hardworking
Has so many smutty fanfics written about him but he doesn’t know that they exist
Famous for his dimples and general smolder
Carlos Sainz: Akaash
“Oh my god, is he indian? YES DESI REP!” (She was so exited, I felt bad telling her he is spanish)
Could act in a movie as a fuckboy
Nice enough but might break your heart
Hard to approach but well liked by others
Lewis Hamilton: Joseph (but goes by Joe)
“Why are these guys so hot?”
Very wholesome and doing his best
“He looks like a good driver, I’d let him grip my steering wheel” ;)
Probably posts thirst traps after workouts
George Russell: George (she got one!)
Smiles and laughs but is secretly sad inside
“Is he gay? He feels gay. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I am too and my senses are tingling.”
Solid driver
After seeing him in his williams era: “Awww, look at his hair, what a gem :)”
Fernando Alonso: Alec La Chance
Old man, people are begging him to retire but he stays out of spite
Has a questionable hairstyle
Can come off as rude and scary but he is just blunt
Has probably hazed the new drivers each year
Esteban Ocon: David
Sweet guy, seems very bubbly and fun to be around, has a cute face
Would hype you up if you were feeling down
“He's that one cousin who you see at family gatherings every 4 years that you get along with super well but never talk to outside of those gatherings as neither of you can seem to make the effort to reach out.” (yes, this is her exact wording 😭)
“Is his hair wet or is that just an unholy amout of hair gel?”
Daniel Ricciardo: Arnesto
Very popular among the guys and gals ;)
Very chill and well liked
“He’s so smiley, I love his teeth!”
Looks like he belongs in FIFA
Lando Norris: Theodore
“How old is this guy? I thought you said they had to be 18 to drive or something.”
Has an “I’m not like other boys” mentality
Probably reads those romance webnovels that all have the exact same plot and cries when he finishes them because he wants to be loved
Says “pog” and “sus” unironically
Valterri Bottas: Scott
“He’s giving me australian vibes.”
Has a nice smile, seems chill and relaxed, very reliable
Not a fan of publicity but deals with it only because he has to
Comes off as tough and intense but is actually a total sweetheart, gives off major dad energy
Zhou Guanyu: Andrew
“Ooooh, I like him. He would bump into me on the way to work, spill my drink, and buy me coffee as an apology.”
A solid dude and a good friend
Seems like a good sport
She spent almost ten minutes drooling over his modeling pictures 💀
Kevin Magnussen: Gordon Ramsay
Has strong father vibes but is unhinged
Head empty, only cars
Has questionable morals but everyone loves him
Stoner energy
“He looks like if someone tried to copy Gordon Ramsay but changed it up a bit so it wasn’t obvious.”
Mick Schumacher: Brad
Very charismatic
“What happened to his hair? Why would he cut it like that?” (I showed her before and after photos of that one haircut)
Very sweet but is also a menace to society
Looks like he would enjoy cherry flavored cough medicine
Pierre Gasly: Chadwick
Very cool and suave, flirts a lot, secretly sad inside
Throws parties often
Would have went into finance if f1 didn’t work out
Has a small but devoted fanbase, extremely underrated driver
“I can’t tell if I would trust him or not.”
Yuki Tsunoda: Benjamin
Very nice, another solid guy
“He has the same hair my brother did when he was 12.”
Can drive an f1 car well but gets too nervous to drive on regular streets because he doesn’t trust himself to not start speeding
“He’s cute, I’d date him.”
Sebastian Vettel: Gandalf
Very nice and wise, pleasant to talk to
Wins a lot, has many fans that thirst over him and his scruffy hair
Could have been a footballer but chose to go into f1 instead
“He has fun uncle energy, I want to smoke a joint with him.”
Lance Stroll: Jacob from Twilight
“THIS GUY’S HAIRCUT IS EVEN WORSE THAN BRAD’S!”
When he got rid of his old hair, his passion for the sport left with it
Sometimes gets intimidated by some of the intense racers
“Someone please tell him to grow his hair back out, it looked so good.”
Alex Albon: Jughead from Archie
Has a good portion of haters for no reason
A bit awkward but very sweet
Pulls off the red hair VERY well
“I want to be his bottle of hairdye.”
Nicholas Latifi: Santander
Is either the best driver currently or very bad
Looks very intuitive and thoughtful
Seems handy and domestically skilled
“I like his hands, do you think he moisturizes?”
I honestly can’t tell which one is my favorite 😭

OKAY SO I HAVE A LIST
I went through seventeen pages of f1 rpf on ao3 to get this. I included every f1 driver/f1 driver pairing I found. There's some pairings with an f1 driver and a driver for something else, as well as pairings of a driver with a journalist/engineer/pyshio therapist if you are interested in more of those! But I felt that you already had a bunch and this is a lot to add onto it so I felt bad adding anymore dkdmdksks I have pairings from some different eras :) also! I was kind of surprised by the amount of Alonso fic I found? Just cause I don't normally see that much, but there's apperently quite a few fics, I think he was the driver I included on this list that had the most fics about him, either him or Charles. Kimi had more than I expected too!
Sebastian Vettel/Jenson Button
Mick Schumacher/Sebastian Vettel
Kevin Magnussen/Nico Rosberg
Christian Horner/Sebastian Vettel
Kimi Raikkonen/Nico Hulkenberg
Valterri Bottas/Kimi Raikkonen
Fernando Alonso/Kimi Raikkonen
Kimi Raikkonen/Lewis Hamilton
Fernando Alonso/Lewis Hamilton
Kevin Magnussen/Jenson Button
Jenson Button/Mark Webber
Alain Prost/Ayrton Senna
Nikita Mazepin/Mick Schumacher
Fernando Alonso/Robert Kubica
Esteban Ocon/Fernando Alonso
Lance Stroll/Nicholas Latifi
Emerson Fittipaldi/Jody Scheckter

I- I'm just going to explain Kevin Magnussen's career to you because the fact he's back is SUCH a surprise and uhm- one needs the entire story to get it and it's actually such a good story so: Kevin got into F1 in 2014 and became the first Dane to score a podium in F1 (plus second Dane to ever score points after his dad) in his FIRST race with McLaren. He lost his seat for 2015 but came back in 2016 for Renault (now Alpine) 1/?
he signed with haas at the end of 2016 and drove there until he got sacked together with Romain Grosjean in 2020 for Mick Schumacher and our fan-favorite (not) Nikita Mazepin. The Haas era also brough us the infamous suck my balls mate incident (look it up on youtube, i beg you, just look up "suck my balls mate" as i sadly can paste links here) which is often wrongly quoted as "Suck my balls, honey". Kevin and Nico still hear it today even though they haven't really spoken since then 2/3
And this leads us to wednesday, after Mazepin got fired because of the obvious going on. No one expected the team to get Kevin back because the relationship was... something, especially after Kevin published a book last year where he basically spilled the tea on his time at McLaren, Renault /and/ Haas, there's an entire twitter thread about the most important information if you want them. so, this was basically me ranting about my fav driver, im so sorry but maybe it sheds a bit of light 3/3
ah wait suck my balls guy yeah i know him. suck my balls video i seen it. i dont even think its that spicy is f1 so flavourless????? have they ever had a 'you were in juniors longer than me bud. go dye your hair' moment ??????
still. obsessed with men in their flop era. thank you for the information. love a gossipy little freak hope he does well this year on ur behalf

hi lovie!!! 3, 26, 29 & 31 ;) for the f1 ask xx
Aaaw, dear, wow!
Thank you so much for asking so many questions!😍
3. favourite driver(s)?
Oh, wow, from a different era it would definitely be Michael Schumacher. His whole appearance and style was just awe-inspiring! (I’m too young to have witnessed Prost, Senna or Berger, sorry^^)
From today it’s definitely Daniel for the whole package he embodies. Max for his joy and recklessness (and a little bit Kevin for his old school style and cheekiness).
26. Let’s imagine that you’ve suddenly met your favourite driver. What would you like to say to him and how do you imagine your meeting in general?
I would meet Daniel probably on one of the tracks, most likely (and that is still not very likely, because... money‘s a bitch) Germany and... yeah, I’d be just fine and chill and cool and ask for a hug and a photo and... who am I kidding, I would be a mess and embarrass myself to the bone!
But I’d really just like to have a beer and a chill chat with him and talk about everything and nothing.
I would like to say to him (probably after a couple of pints xD) that I admire him so much and his smile never ceases to make me happy, BUT I hope he never feels obliged or pressured to be the happy kid, because that shit is really unhealthy and... it’s okay to be down and he can show that, too.
So... puh, that took an interesting U-turn xDD
29. Do you have any suggestions how to make F1 more interesting and popular?
Mh... I heard about that idea of introducing three drivers per team and... nah, I guess that gets even more chaotic.
I like that fan boost concept in FE, but how would you realise that in F1 and lobbyist was an issue this season as well, so...
more women would be interesting, in every department, but don’t get me started on that^^
I guess, the cost regulations in 2021 will be interesting enough for now and cause a lot of trouble for the bigger teams and help the smaller ones.
Let’s talk again about it then😁😁
31. Your top-3 of the sexiest F1 drivers from all the time?
Oh wow... the thing is, I‘m not that old and I find that whole retro-look concept more interesting than sexy, so we have to stick to the more or less current grid.
Jenson Button: he’s just such an excellent and smooth guy, the epitome of an English gentleman, classy, decent, polite and... I‘m a sucker for that accent🙈
Daniel Riccardo: I‘ll leave that one uncommented. Duh.
Kevin Magnussen: Jup. Blond. Tattoos. Soft smile. I like his voice and his English is amazing. This chest tattoo is just hot. He may be an idiot on track, but he sounds like a really cool dude to have a night out with and... did I mention tattoos???
Thanks again, my friend! xx

Motor racing: Magnussen, hard and fast and a blast from the past
BAKU (Reuters) – If Kevin Magnussen could be granted one wish, it would be to roll back the decades and go racing in Formula One’s deadliest era.
Formula One – F1 – Azerbaijan Grand Prix – Baku City Circuit, Baku, Azerbaijan – April 27, 2018 Haas’ Kevin Magnussen during practice REUTERS/David Mdzinarishvili
The Danish driver, who has scored all of his U.S.-owned Haas team’s 11 points so far this season and is enjoying his racing more than ever, is not a man who holds back in or out of the car.
Angry rivals may use less flattering, and more colorful, language to describe his on-track attitude but the 25-year-old would settle for ‘uncompromising’.
“I don’t like compromises. I will give everything. I will die in the car. I won’t hold back,” he told Reuters ahead of Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix. “I would put my life on (the line). Absolutely.
“When you put your helmet on and you’re in the race, I find that’s just everything there is in the world,” he continued.
“I love my family, and there’s so many things in life I enjoy, but when I’m in the car there’s nothing else that means anything.
“For me, when I get in the car, the essential of life is Formula One.”
Magnussen is one of those, like Ferrari’s 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen — whose admiration for the racers of yesteryear is undisguised.
He is no lover of the ‘halo’ head protection device surrounding cockpits and made mandatory this season, as much for what it stands for as any aesthetic reasons.
If the Dane is appreciative of the governing body for all their efforts to improve road safety for regular drivers, and he is, he also feels the track should be more about risk-taking and bravery than it is at present.
“I dream of racing in the ‘60s,” he said, a view unlikely to find favor with French team mate and family man Romain Grosjean.
“If I had one wish, I would say to be born in the ‘30s and be young in the ‘50s and ‘60s. It hurts my racing heart when I see things so far from what it was back then. I envy those guys so much.
“It was just pure and more exciting,” he added. “You could make a difference if you were really willing to take risks. And also if you felt comfortable on that limit. Now everyone feels comfortable, there’s no risk.
“Back then, if you have the ability to be calm and collected, on the limit of death effectively, you made a difference. And now that’s not really a factor any more.”
FRESH ENTHUSIASM
Magnussen, whose father Jan raced in Formula One in the 1990s, has had a roller-coaster ride since his debut with McLaren in 2014.
His second place in that year’s Australian season-opener remains McLaren’s highest placing since 2012, but he sat out 2015 before joining Renault in 2016 just when all hope seemed gone.
That adventure lasted a season, with Renault signing Nico Hulkenberg and leaving the Dane battling Britain’s Jolyon Palmer for the remaining seat. Magnussen jumped first and joined Haas.
In Hungary last year he and Hulkenberg clashed, with the Dane forcing the German off.
When Hulkenberg approached Magnussen afterwards to compliment him sarcastically on being “once again the most unsporting driver”, the Dane’s reply was not fit for a family audience.
“I race hard,” said Magnussen, when asked about that incident. “In a situation like this with a midfield team, you’re not guaranteed to score points. And sometimes you have nothing to lose.
“You might get a penalty, you might lose your front wing but there’s nothing to lose if you’re 11th. Go for it. Sometimes you have to be a lot more aggressive when you’re fighting out there.
“If you are fighting for the championship, you have to play the long game. You have to change your approach. If I was fighting for the championship, you wouldn’t see me racing the same way.”
This season, Magnussen is enjoying a continuity and security he has not had before. He feels appreciated and at one with his team.
“I really enjoy racing again, I don’t feel that kind of negative pressure, I don’t have that kind of bad feeling that I had, especially at McLaren,” he said.
“I feel so much happier when I go to tracks and to the races. I’m really looking forward to it, like when I was a kid and I couldn’t sleep for a week before the race because I was so excited.
“You went to the track with such a big energy and fighting spirit, that joy. And I’ve got that back now. I haven’t had that (feeling) in Formula One before.”

Motor racing: Magnussen, hard and fast and a blast from the past
BAKU (Reuters) – If Kevin Magnussen could be granted one wish, it would be to roll back the decades and go racing in Formula One’s deadliest era.

¡leclerc-s speaks! you cannot convince me that logan and lando haven't had a similar argument at least once and poor oscar was stuck as mediator between them.
¡disclaimer! this is in no way making assumptions about the people involved in this story, this is all fake. it is a fanfiction please don't take any of what is said seriously. this is all for entertainment purposes and as a creative outlet for me. enjoy!
