sometimes i get so obsessed with imagining how stories would've changed if the parent(s) survived. it always completely upsets the story's foundation and sometimes even invalidates the whole entire plot, but a lot of times it also brings up a lot of additional problems that are really fun to chew on in a what-if scenario.

have you seen simone giertz's video about making a stained glass robot?
I've had it in my recommendations basically constantly since it came out dbhdhdhd, I want to do a full live blog of it like I did for the E+K video so I've mostly just been waiting for the right Brain Mood to start in on it.

I made a custom Tintin doll! I used a Chat Noir doll as a base because that's the one petit male doll I could find that was articulated and still affordable. The amazing @bubblekidaesthetics photographed him as seen above!
Details about my process below. Warning for weird doll photos.
His jumper is made out of a pair of baby socks, his plus fours are made from an old tablecloth, his shoes are made from cardstock, his socks from some trainer socks and his trench is made from a pillow case I found on offer during a sale! The shirt is the one item I didn't make, it's a Ken shirt but as a result it's a bit too big for him.
Tumblr media
I had to hack Chat Noir's head down with a box cutter because I found the vinyl too tough to pull off, then I sculpted over the remaining head stump with tin foil and a mixture of milliput and green stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I painted him with acrylics for that vintage doll feeling rather than using pastels and MSC - he's orange in the second picture above because I was colour correcting the green putty.
Snowy was made with a My Little Pony, armature wire, tin foil and hot glue!

I genuinely don't understand the gripes a few people have with how Belos was handled in the finale. "Dont just brush him off as being evil" Well, why the fuck not? Dude wasnt born evil but he purposefully chose destruction and death at every possible opportunity for 400+ years. Nothing about his backstory would have made any impact on the characters affected, because its not an excuse, its not even an explanation! Caleb had the same childhood and he loved the Boiling isles. Eat boots Belos.
Ok, buckle up cause this is gonna be a long one, we gotta have a chat about Belos as a character, because there's been so many takes about this i keep seeing about " he never accepted the isles the way luz did" and "He had 400 years to change and he never took the took the offer", because it just seems like the fandom wants to kinda ignore a lot of the nuance about his situation and why it's not that simple?
and i'm for sure certain it's because the fandom is obviously already pretty biased against him since he's the villain, and what he does to the main characters as well as represents.
And that's fine, obviously he becomes a pretty bad person, no one is obligated to like him and it's ok to feel uncomfortable given the character he is.
But i think a lot of these issues as to why people have such mixed opinions about the finale has a lot to do directly with the fact the show DID keep his backstory as vague as they did, when if they had gone into it i think we would've had less of this discourse.
Now none of this is me excusing him obviously, but the fandom is very adamant to just not allow him to have depth either, when....he's allowed to be irredeemable and have depth at the same time. He's meant to be a very human villain, a character that could happen to anyone under the right circumstances
So not exploring that depth, why it got how it did, and how things like it can be prevented is a flaw within the show and among a lot of fans.
And to be fair, the show does not HAVE to do it, but the show also clearly wrote his character to have a lot of implied depth whether people like it or not, him coming from a very real religious group alone and making him a foil to luz has turned what could of been a very one note villain into one with a lot of layers to his villainy.
And if the show wants to make belos a very one note villian, no depth, they could of very easily done this by just cutting out details like his love and care for his brother, or just make make him want to destroy witches simply because he decided on his own they were worth destroying.
But that's not exactly what they've presented belos as being.
Tumblr media
The show thrives in having characters who aren't just simple nor cookie cutter.
Hunter isn't just some cocky sidekick, he's an abused teenager who craves love and affection, and is willing to go high and low to earn it, terrified to be thrown away and replaced and constantly is forced into a mold just to get the affection he craves. He's highly sheltered and isolated just because his father figure doesn't want him to be his own person since that wasn't what he was created for
King isn't just a tiny little brat who craves power, he's a child whose been lied to about his past, and he wanted nothing more then to be taken seriously and feel a sense of belonging. He believes that he wants power, but finds out he really only wanted to be treated like anyone else, and that he's far happier with a family that loves and cares about him rather then being a powerful demon king.
Lilith isn't just a self important antagonist who wants to force eda to do what she wants, she grew up close to her sister and wanting to be by her side well into the future, but felt a sense of inadequacy in comparison to eda. The pressures of the coven system and need to win against her sister made her make a drastic choice she regrets and she wants nothing more then to fix it and make everything the ideal fantasy they grew up wanting to have together. She's also a large nerd, craves the attention of higher figures since her own mother used to put all the attention on eda, and changed her appearance just so people would take her seriously.
And the show does this with most of it's cast, obvi there's the exception like tibbles and even bosha who don't have too much to them, but they're also very minor antagonists and there's still stuff you can pick up on.
Belos however is the main antagonist, everything that happens in the show, happens because of him, his entire backstory is basically why the plot of the show happens.
Not just that, but also caleb and evelyn, if it weren't for the drama between these three, there would be no show.
And people are WELL aware these three aren't the main leads, they aren't going to be the main focus of most episodes and obviously the show was going to end in the favor of the main characters.
But
the story the show tells between these three ties very strongly into the ones with the leads too. We are given at least enough details to notice parallels between stuff that happens with characters like luz, and characters like philip.
We know philip and luz grew up in gravesfield, we know there were outcasts there, and they had one family member they relied on to support them there. They ended up in the demon realm, they both learned magic, and they both are strongly motivated by their beliefs regarding the isles.
So there's a lot they share in common, which makes it really easy to take a look at philip and say "Well it's his fault for not being like luz and accepting the isles like she did".
Tumblr media
But, there's a lot of differences here
Luz grew up with fantasy, with magic stories about witches and heroes and demons. Philip grew up in a 1600s puritan village which demonized this stuff, he was a young child growing up being told this stuff was evil and he was taught to fight against it.
Luz felt odd for her interests and out there personality but at worst she felt isolated and misunderstood, she didn't like her mom's efforts to change her to be "Normal". Philip actually conformed to gravesfield, caleb clearly encouraging his brother to do so, just so both of them could fit in with the town. Had they not conformed at best they'd be isolated, but at worst they'd be dead.
Camilia is an adult who eventually opens up and talks to luz about how it was wrong to try and change her to be "Normal", that she herself hid her own interests to do so.
Caleb, was a child, he did not have any open conversations with his younger brother. Caleb hid evelyn and his interests with witches from philip and then on top of this, left philip behind.
Tumblr media
You could absolutely say the fact caleb didn't talk to philip is pure speculation, and not confirmed at all. That all of this could be summed up to unreliable narrators.
But we know caleb left for the isles before philip did, we know it took time for philip to find him again (because his beard grew out), we know caleb had a wife who seems to be pregnant, that he was introducing philip to (Implying he not only hasn't seen philip in awhile, but that eve and philip have never met to caleb) and all of that alone feeds into the fact caleb left him behind to start another life. This is all shown in his memories alone, stuff we can't chalk up to unreliable narrators.
So the most logical conclusion to come to is caleb left philip to start a new family, we don't have a lot of details as to if caleb ever planned to return, if caleb had good reasons to do what he did, or much about his mindset.
But we have enough to know Philip loved and looked up to caleb, that he relied on caleb, and caleb lied and left him.
There is again, reason to tie this back to camila and luz.
Tumblr media
but this is not a child leaving a parent behind, this is a parental figure leaving a child behind.
This is what i mean by the issue being lack of clear answers, people claim caleb left when philip was an adult, but we actually have no confirmed evidence for this. We have enough of philip's memories to know 2 things, that he was still a teenager when caleb was meeting evelyn, and he was an adult when he arrived.
You could argue philip was an adult by the time caleb left, but it's so vauge you can also argue caleb left when philip was a child and philip didn't figure out his way to the demon realm till adulthood and there's not enough proof to go one way or another.
now titan dad says philip had no genuine reasons for his actions, that he did this all for glory, but as steve put it back in OTWAT, the titan is just a guy.
And given the collector situation, he can make mistakes and screw up just like anyone else.
Titan dad only sees what he can see and make observations based on what he sees. He saw a human come to the isles with a bias already against witches, who ended up killing his brother, who claimed to come here to save others and that's all he's going to see philip as being. Someone who wants to save others but just hurts them instead.
He has no reason to know what philip grew up under, nor does he have reason to know philip and caleb's story before they arrived. There's no denying philip did love caleb, and that they were close, but that caleb leaving him behind for witches drove them apart.
I think the problem ppl even have with what titan dad says is purely because the fans take it at face value, because let's be honest, most fans will believe the objective heroes for what they assume over the villians. And since the show again, leaves philip's story vauge, and never puts it in the main focus, people will just assume what titan dad says must be the truth.
Like yes, you can pick up on these details if you are paying attention, but most people won't do that, so a lot of fans will listen to the god telling them what philip's motivations are coming from rather then put together the sense of betrayal from caleb that hurt philip that most of the evidence is actually pointing to.
philip had no parents, and had no one but caleb as far as we can tell, and then caleb left him too, like he didn't want him anymore.
And he left him in a bigoted town, alone.
Tumblr media
the damage this could of done if he was a child is pretty darn bad, and for philip to assume this happened because of a witch means reinforcing everything he's been taught about witches.
Caleb lied about his changes, so when caleb sees him again, caleb seems to be a different person, which does fit with what philip says to luz about the isles "Brainwashing people".
tho you can argue that that's not the truth, that philip knows caleb did it on purpose and killed him for betraying him, cause of how he blames him in episodes like FTF.
But again, this is the result of leaving things vague, because either situation is plausible.
it's plausible philip never intended to kill caleb at all and he died as the result of trying to protect eve because the show says he was trying to target evelyn to save caleb, and it's plausible he died on purpose out of philip's rage for caleb leaving him. Because guess what? That means caleb had the means to go see him and could've seen him but made the choice NOT to, so yeah, that's pretty heartbreaking.
again, this also comes into play regarding Philips's guilt.
Tumblr media
People objectively keep saying philip HAS no guilt regarding caleb, but we have evidence for both guilt and non guilt.
Now, sure, his portrait of dead caleb implies philip is not guilty for his death based on his expression after the fact. We also have the fact philip shows distain towards the grimwalkers, that he never outright expresses he feels bad to anyone.
But, we also have caleb's death being treated as one of philip's worst memories in KT that he objectively recalls in horror, he says he "Tried" to save caleb in FTF, which implies he wanted to save him and that he's mad he didn't manage to do so. The grimwalkers and caleb could be seen as ghosts, but also as hallucinations, and if you are seeing them as the latter then it makes sense he'd be seeing them out of some level of guilt towards having them killed.
If the show had these details explained more fully, it would be easy to either deem belos as being a murderous dick with no remorse who thinks killing was the right thing, or as a guilt ridded stubborn murderer who wants to not acknowledge he was wrong and screwed up.
Tumblr media
it's why people are split, because you could objectively choose to see him both ways and the ending will affect you differently depending on what you picked up on.
But now let's talk about philip not changing, because people have bashed him for not doing so in the 400 years he's been there and that he had opportunities to do so but didn't.
And i think this is half right, half wrong.
Philip came to the isles with biases, he basically grew up in a cult, he came in thinking he was traveling into hell to go find caleb. Caleb encouraged his hatred, and then his hatred got further pushed when caleb seemed to be kidnapped, and then further pushed when he was surrounded by nothing but bigots.
So this man was already on a bad foot compared to luz, who was here to live out the fantasy books she grew up on, and objectively would have no reason to hate or fear witches nearly as much.
And we do know while the BI can be compassionate, it also has it's issues, even luz faced discrimination for being human herself while on the isles. Being powerless there is well, not great, it's why luz had to figure out her own way to do things alongside everyone else.
And the Bi ARE dangerous, especially for humans, so it's at least understandable philip is not going to just show up and look past the flesh eating plants, the evil weather, and the lack of anything he can even objectively eat.
Now philip could of considered things outside of his bias, and made the effort to try and look at things from a new perspective. But we also have to acknowledge that it's not easy to come out of this long time brainwashing either, and that it takes time and help to do so.
And philip, didn't seem to have that.
Yes, caleb grew up the same way, but not only was he older, which already set him up to question things more. But he had evelyn, he had someone to challenge him and his views and change his mind.
Philp, doesn't have that, there is no confirmation anyone ever really chose to challenge his views or make him realize he was following a lie.
Caleb could of but caleb left.
All we see is philip, isolated, following the beliefs he was taught and being hostile to witches, and witches rightfully being hostile back, which just further is feeding into his bias.
Tumblr media
You can assume philip had chances to change but didn't, but there's no real strong evidence of that being offered to him either. That any witch ever tried to make him question anything.
It's pure speculation.
Now Philip is a stubborn ass dude for sure, so yeah, we can claim he just simply didn't want to consider it.
But people are claiming Philip was shown help that he didn't take and that's just not true. We never see anyone asking him to do the right thing or making him question things, at least not compassionately.
no one to our knowledge ever did challenge him, or did reach out to him, not even in the show itself.
Luz is rightfully hostile towards him even when trying to challenge him, hunter does attempt to try and come up with helpful ideas but he would silence himself if his uncle didn't like it (Not to mention the existing fact that he is supposed to be a caleb replacement so his existence comes from philip not wanting him to change or question things philip thinks caleb should not), and well....collector giving him a hug isn't gonna do anything at that point to stop him from thinking the worst of the isles.
This is partially because belos has the power in scenes, that if he hears what he doesn't want to hear he can quickly silence the individual and ignore it.
He's basically put in situations where no one is challenging him and if they are, they're usually doing it with distain and he's responding like a dick right back.
So maybe not much could of been done when belos has become emperor, outside of some rare occurrences where he has no choice but to listen or if he was challenged by someone he respected and would be less willing to hurt. Maybe he's too far gone to back out now and has too much power to even allow himself to consider what anyone had to say, even if they did do it kindly and wouldn't face his wrath.
Tumblr media
but he was only emperor for 50 years too.
So ok, what about before that?
Well, yeah, maybe there were chances he could of been, but that's a period of time we only see so much of, and none of it shows one way or the other that Philip was offered the chance to improve.
I think had we gotten a scene of philip being offered a chance to do good, to consider things, that he knew he was wrong and still rejected it, it would back up this whole "Philip made the choice to not get better" thing people claim.
but truth is, it's speculation, we don't know.
A guy who spent his life buying into where he grew up and came in with biases that became a cycle of him being terrible and witches reinforcing what he thought isn't just suddenly going to change his mind and be nice now on a whim unless those biases are challenged in a way he can't deny.
it's on him for not considering looking on things outside of his bias for sure, but people seem to think doing that is simple and easy and it's really not.
Philip had no evelyn, he was left with no one but his bias and stubborn mind.
It's like king said back in hollow mind " People don't want to believe they've been following the wrong person their whole lives", and philip didn't have a luz like hunter did to help him realize how wrong he really was.
Instead it got worse and worse.
This is why philip feels real, because this can happen to people, that they can grow up with hate and never receive the help they needed to pull them out of the mindset. So they get worse, they become worse people.
and we can argue philip didn't deserve the chance to get better, but you'll never know if you don't try and we don't know if anyone did try before he was too far gone.
to think all of this could of been avoided if caleb actually spoke to his brother and gave him the chance to change...
Tumblr media
Tying this all back to the beginning-
Philip's story ties into luz, they are foils in a lot of ways, but people need to remember they have differences outside of luz being a good person and philip being a bad person. Those differences make them into the people they are.
That luz was set up to love the isles in a way philip was set up to come in with a bias against it.
That it is not as simple as "Philip should of just got better" given what happened to him and the lack of help he had.
That philip never really is objectively shown to be offered genuine chances to reconsider his views on the show as much as people keep claiming so, and it's mostly all assumption at this point.
That so much of this argument over whether he's one way or the other could of been fixed if the show hadn't kept things vague.
By doing so, it leaves a lot for interpretation about him and therefore means people will have different views on what he thinks and feels and therefore will have different views on how his death should of been handled.
Caleb and philip tie into camila and luz, they tie into the clawthrone sisters, they are the basis for the plot of the series, they tie into hunter and the themes of being understood and being honest about yourself and conformity and it is no wonder people care about them.
It is incredibly valid if anyone expecting this story, that tied into the plot so hard ,as well as the themes, was upset it felt unexplained or dropped in the finale.
Especially since the fandom, with an obvious hatred for belos, responded to it by treating titan dad's word as god and simplifies philip's story completely despite everything i just mentioned here.
It is perfectly fine if you are not someone who cares about belos, but the people who do are perfectly allowed to be bothered that the show itself kept the complexity vague and not addressed and none of it mattered when it came to how his arc ended.
And that the only person who properly gives a personal opinion of what he thinks his motives are, simplifies him to being evil, and the fandom roles with that and the show never tries to do much to prove otherwise despite the evidence.
because this is a fascinating story about how conformity and bigotry can drive two close brothers apart and it feels like a story the show should of at least dedicated more of an episode to.
Especially since there's no clear idea if we'll ever get extra toh content to really tie any of this up.
Again, none of this excuses belos/philip for what he did, does, or tries to do, no amount of his life being screwed over and people treating him bad and not reaching out to him will ever excuse the fact he went so far.
But let's also just, not pretend it was an easy fix either, that someone can just....stop believing what they believe with the drop of a hat.
Especially given how this can reflect real people who are made into people like this.
He is nuanced, and people are attached to this villain for good reasons.
Nothing is simple about him, and it's just a product of how the show has handled his character.

A Great and Gruesome Height by @moku_youbi.
So this bind was a wild ride, with experimentation galore. It’s my 10th bind (HURRAY) and I started this bind knowing I wanted to play with thread, given I had so much fun with the stab binding. I had some red thread which i had originally purchased for the VTE bind - and just the right shade i was going for so i went for it.
the original idea i was going for was ‘red thread of fate, but make it MURDER’ and so this tidy little concept was born. half way through the design conceptualization phase i had a little epiphany while watching season 3 of hannibal that blood spatter stringing was ALSO red thread and i just couldn’t resist (yes i know hannibal’s little murder tableaus seldom have blood but the string! MORE STRING!)
More photos under the cut.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Statistics:
115559 words || 426 pages
Body Text: Crimson Text
Chapter Headers: Cormorant Garamond
I quite like the experimentation with body fonts and trying to divert away from regular Garamond. So far, I’ve only used Baskerville, Garamond, Liberation serif and Cardo, but I do like this one. I lack the typography terminology but it feels fancy and posh and something Hannibal would enjoy.
I also aggressively rounded this book - boy is it ROUND, perhaps a little too so. i had a difficult time getting the spine piece to be as round as I liked.
Also, it was my first time putting a quote on the first few pages - i have zero regrets. Also featuring my new imprint page with AN ERROR (IT’S DECEMBER 2022 NOW OOPS).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn’t have enough heat-reactive foil and this fic has 40+ chapters so I could only foil the last couple of chapters which were actually short mini-sequels to this fic which I also added in. I have to say, using a laminator over an iron for heat-reactive foil is MUCH superior. I didn’t have to work myself into a frenzy trying to get an even layer of foil on it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Endpapers are a little bunchy because of the thread. But i had to put butterflies because THE CHRYSALIS has hatched (i will never tire of hannibal metaphors).
See below for the conceptualization phase on cricut and er paper. I have zero art skills and have aphantasia so I had to print it out to try and figure out where everything needed to go.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This bind is also the bind where I won my blood sacrifice badge - don’t use rusty tools guys. The spouse had borrowed my rotary cutter to cut wrapping paper for christmas wrapping and is RIGHT-HANDED. Self is LEFT-HANDED. Tool returned to me as is and I did not check if the blade protector was on the correct side as the tool will get flipped direction wise depending on the handedness of the user. So guess who needs to get a tetanus shot today? :joy:
All in all, still a successful bind. It is a little busy, and if I had to do it again, I might not put the titling on the spine (always a little crooked, cause I roll that way). The Siser gold and silver metallic HTV for the hands fought me the entire way, and I’d probably not use it for such delicate lines - only part of it adhered and it made me very upset at first but since the bind is for myself it’s fine.
I’d also use a thinner red thread next time (the thick waxed linen thread for leather work doesn’t fuck around, WILL NOT BUY AGAIN) because as you can see 3-4 rounds around the finger looks like it’s choking it and i had some space limitations at the edges.
Well, a fun idea, with less than perfect execution but I’ll probably do it again one day if i ever summon up the courage to consider making this again (perhaps for the author if i get over my massive to-bind pile). PROBABLY NOT IN WHITE - gad WHITE IS SO SMUDGEY - nothing to remind you how dirty your hands are than white bookcloth. this is off-white pearl BUT fingerprint smudges!!!

Bartender knives / corkscrews
by J. A. Henckels / Zwilling, Solingen, Germany, 1900-1969
The short curved blade is a foil-cutter, for removing the foil of metal wrapped around the wine bottle's neck before uncorking it. Nowadays there's usually a convenient strip that you can pull with your fingers. (Also, the foil is no longer made of lead; well that was a bad move.) The long corkscrews at the bottom pictures are retracting, otherwise they wouldn't fit on a normal-sized pocket knife, and these are known as Müller patent knives.

im sure you've talked about this before but what are your opinions on hilbert
hilbert is... a fascinating character. he's an archetype disguised as another archetype, concealing a real person with understandable motivations and sincerely held ambitions. in a way, that's very reflective of how his work has been hollowed out and warped with each iteration of himself he becomes to continue it. hilbert is an insidious type of evil, because his goals are noble and he doesn't enjoy hurting people, but he will carry out orders and rationalize his actions "for the greater good." which makes him an excellent foil for eiffel; hilbert is nothing if not a Big Picture thinker. "you talk about helping people, but what about the real, live people around you?" / "increasingly, i find them to be of negligible importance." etc.
i think it says a lot about wolf 359's character writing philosophy that hilbert's betrayal and big reveal is really kind of his first character moment. he's there for two seasons after that, but he's never redeemed, and his goals never change. what makes hilbert more complex, more real, more understandable, is entirely perspective.
and the tragedy of hilbert, i suppose, is that he sacrificed everything for what he believed was right, sold his soul to the devil for it, and then... wasn't even particularly good at it. he's a big fish in a very small pond, as far as wolf 359 antagonists go. his death virus was never going to be anything but a death virus, and cutter figured that out (and found another use for it) ages ago. in change of mind, he was so certain he had the right answer - of course it was the scientist, his work was threatened - and they wouldn't have made it out if not for fourier, who realized it was really about human relationships. in am i alone now? hilbert's part is the only one where no one else speaks. before he dies, jacobi cuts his comms line, and his final words are a cut off "can anybody hear-?"
so, again... hilbert is a narratively and thematically significant character. this is barely even scratching the surface of that. but do i like him? hell no. absolutely not. he tried to murder hera and then said "tell me you're not mourning that appliance" so i think it's fine that he died, actually. that's how i judge all wolf 359 characters.

My daughter was having nightmares and feared monsters, so I made her a "sleep sword". The whole thing is non-toxic and the gems glow in the dark. This is where my love of Discworld and LARPing intersect with parenthood.
Tumblr media
'But Mrs Robertson told me that her Emma was going round the house looking for monsters in the cupboards! And up until now she's always been afraid of them!' 'Did she have a stick?' said Susan. 'She had her father's sword!' 'Good for her.'
~ Thief of Time by Terry Pratchett
Process detailed below
Materials:
Camp pad
Marker
Kite spar
Epoxy or carpet glue
Box cutter or craft knife
Drywall knife or serrated kitchen knife
Duct tape collection
Board to evenly smoosh
Cord for the handle
Nerf glow-in-the-dark discs for the gems
Foil to back gems
Thin craft foam for the hilt if your cat bites the camp pad all to hell
Doodle of sword
Child
Doodle the sword
Measure the child's arm from shoulder to fingertip.
Cut Kite Spar to length if child's arm. Sand the edges. I used a dremmel.
Draw the outline of the sword three times on the camp pad. Total length should be approx. child arm + 2 inches. You can draw the outline on cardboard and then trace if you prefer.
Cut the sword blanks out. They won't be perfect.
Tumblr media
Stack the blanks in different orders to determine which sword blank is biggest. This one will go in the center.
Cut a channel in the center blank to hold the kitespar snugly, with at least one inch of padding on all sides.
Place the bottom blank on a hard surface.
Spread glue
Add center blank
Glue into channel
Kite spar into channel
More glue
Top blank
Board
Weight
Wait for glue to set. Again, it won't be perfect.
Tumblr media
Use the serrated knife to shape the blade
Use the box cutter to delineate the hilt
Take a photo and get out your duct tape collection.
Make multiple mockups using only colors you actually have.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Allow child to select color for the hilt
Peel the stickers off the nerf discs
Crumple foil and place inside the disc. I liked the effect better than flat foil or glittery paper, but you do you
Attach gems to hilt - I used little strips of duct tape on the very edges
If necessary, cut two hilt shapes out of craft foam and attach to camp pad. Stuff the gaps in the camp pad created by cat attack with the shrapnel. Tape hilt foam together as you go to hold the shrapnel in place. Rember to cut holes for the gems before attaching the craft foam.

Duct tape all the things in appropriate colors. Cut little slits to smooth around curves.
Wrap the cord around the grip
Charge the glow gems with sunshine or blacklight
Give sword to child

tell me about stained glass
yay!! it's so fun i can't wait to do it again i'm gonna tell you the whole process
so first you need to pick out your pattern/draw the design, make sure there's no weak points (lines directly through the entire piece etc)
once that's set you get to pick out your glass :D some glass is thicker than others but it doesn't matter too much unless you want it to be all the same, there's lots of different textures as well whcih can look really cool
next step is to trace the pattern into the pieces, you wanna go for the edge of the glass to save as much as possible for future projects, and if it's too opaque you need to either use a light box or cut out that part of the pattern
when it's all traced you're gonna start cutting. so get your little tool, make sure you're standing in order to get the pressure and right angle
Tumblr media
this is the glass cutter ^^
now you gotta smooth that shit down so here's this guy
Tumblr media
he's a glass grinder he sands down the sides into the right shape and makes sure you don't cut yourself as much. the bit is in the middle and you hold the glass with ur fingers and press it into the bit to grind it down
next is foiling but before that is cleaning bc the grinder has water in it and it mixes with the glass particles and makes it all icky so get some glass cleaner and wipe it down with a cloth
now time for foiling
Tumblr media
this is copper foil, it comes in rolls with different thicknesses. generally one size fits most glass but thicker ones need thicker foil so it covers the side and equally on the front and back of the glass
i tend to start near a corner, then you're going to wrap it around being careful that the glass goes in the middle of the foil. once it's wrapped around once make sure it overlaps with the beginning about 1/4-1/2 inch, here you cut it
press the foil down on the sides and top and bottom of the glass, then get some kind of tool (can be anything tbh even a pencil or ruler) and rub the foil into the glass so it is fully pressed down
Tumblr media
(random piece i found on the internet with foiled glass)
onto soldering :D
once it's foiled you're going to put the pieces together how you want them to lay in the final product. first is tacking, aka putting a small amount of solder on the intersections of glass. before soldering anything you need to put flux on the section you are soldering. (btw solder only sticks to foil not glass) flux basically is a liquid that prevents oxidation on the copper foil, making the solder stick.
there's lead free and leaded solder, i've only worked with lead free but many professional stained glass artists use leaded. it acts a bit differently when soldering but works just as well.
after tacking is the actual soldering. basically you take a stick of solder and a soldering iron and hold the solder right behind the iron so it melts and sort of drips down the edge of the iron onto the foil as you bring your iron across the foil. once you solder one side, flip it over and do the other, then the sides which is a bit different, with more tacking
Tumblr media
after soldering you gotta clean it cuz it's dirty again so head to the sink and get some soap and a brush and scrub that shit off
then if you want you can add patina which can make the solder black or other colors i think
then there's polishing which you just scrub on with a cotton pad, you can buff it after this with just a cloth to make it extra shiny but yeah that itttt
ty for letting me rant about this if you have any more questions lemme know <3

Anyways since it's not common knowledge that you can get into doing stained glass really easily nowadays i thought I'd go ahead and put together a quick and dirty explanation on it. Prices are given in USD and are based on how much they cost at my localish stained glass shop in jul 2022 but all items can be gotten at larger craft stores or online.
Hobby Lobby has an extensive stained glass section usually. They also have coupons and don't put barcodes on their merchandise so they don't always track their stock super well. do with that last bit of information what you will
skip to the bottom of you just want to see steps
Supplies:
Mandatory Tools, buy these once and never again (unless they break or somethin):
Glass cutters: Pencil grip if you're confident in your hand strength, Pistol grip if you have joint issues (most of the folk i know irl that are into stained glass are arthritic and swear by the pistol grips, do with that tinfo what you will)
Pliers: You'll need 2 types, grozzier pliers and curved jaw pliers. these are not the same as the pliers you use in most other applications. you can usually get both bundled with a glass cutter for less than 30$
Soldering Iron: Get one that comes with a soldering station and a flat chisel shaped tip. Weller is the industry standard. 40 bucks.
semi optional: a wet grinder: not 100 percent necessary but it makes life a hundred times easier and lets you do more complicated shapes with less skill than you would need otherwise, so I'm putting it here. It's vital that it's a wet grinder because aerosolized glass dust is bad for your everything. 90$. if you don't get a wet grinder you will just need some 400 grit or higher waterproof sandpaper. Wet sand your pieces. Do not dry sand.
70-190$ to start
consumables:
Glass: comes in two main types, Translucent/Cathedral, and Opaque. From there there are Many variations including waterglass and iridescent glass. Prices range from 8$ a square foot up to a couple hundred for handmade artisan stuff, but most seem to be between 10$ and 20$ 1 square foot of glass goes further than you think it will
Solder: Must Be Acid Free. Solder with an acid core is really common because that's what's used in every other application. it will not work for stained glass. Solder comes in 4 main types but there's plenty of others out there: lead free, 60/40, 70/30, and 50/50. Get 60/40 to start out unless the lead scares you, then get lead free. (the lead content in solder is not dangerous so long as you aren't regularly licking the final product/using it for food. The fumes can cause migraines tho so ventilation is a good idea) 26$ per pound, goes a long way
Flux: any solder flux will do, 4$ lasts forever
glass cutting oil: it's what it says on the tin, use this with the glass cutter to make it work. 10$ per bottle lasts forever.
copper foil tape: used to make the solder stick to the glass. comes in may sizes, just grab one that's thicker than your glass and Feels right. what width you use is entirely personal preference on anything that's not too big. 7$
Homasote/compressed cellulose fiber board/ cork/ ceiling tiles/ drywall/ plywood: You're going to need something to solder and pin your glass pieces on, any of these will do. All of them are reusable but you will probably need to cut them down to more comfortably fit your project which is why I'm putting them here instead of the buy them once category. 69¢ for the cieling tiles to like 50$ for a sheet of homasote get whatever is easiest/cheapest. or solder on a heat proof surface you already have.
tarnish/patina: the solder will naturally turn black overtime but it won't look pretty while doing it. you either need to clean it regularly or just accept that it will tarnish and do the work for it. Tarnish commonly comes in black and bronze. don't let these get on your skin. it won't hurt but prolonged and repeat exposure is a cancer and chemical burn risk. 11$
~100$. everything besides the glass and solder will last a couple dozen projects at minimum, most will last Mucho longer.
optional:
Nick's Grinder's Mate. it's a special made item for stained glass grinding but if you don't like your hands getting wet or have issues with your hands it makes the process So Much Easier.
Metal or glass head sewing pins. they're used to help hold your glass in place while soldering many people don't use them at all.
plastic waffle grid: it catches the tiny little glass shards that flake off while cutting. It just makes clean up much much Much easier and reduces the amount of shards that end up on the floor and in your feet (please wear shoes while cutting glass, i don't, but you should.)
Safety:
Eye protection, you don't need anything super extreme but yeah glass shards bad.
gardening gloves with thick palm and finger protection to reduce cuts and handle pieces during soldering.
bandaids, glass cuts don't usually hurt but they do bleed. think paper cut in terms of severity.
additional bits you probably already have:
scissors, paper, sharpie or dry erase markers, glue sticks
Basic process
find or draw up a pattern
make 2 copies of it, one to use as reference one to cut up and glue to your glass as a pattern. Alternatively you can trace your pattern onto the glass if you'd rather not use the paper
number the pieces on both the glass and the pattern to avoid having to do a broken glass jigsaw puzzle.
score the glass
use the pliers to break along your score lines
wet sand the sharp edges or grind to final shape
(if you're starting with a pre cut kit which are apparently becoming more common, skip to here) clean the pieces to remove grunge so the tape will stick
wrap edges in copper tape,
burnish them to smooth out the foil, i just use the handle on my scissors
arange the pieces in their final shape, pin them if desired.
coat the copper tape in flux and tack the joints together with solder.
run a bead of solder along the lines.
flip the piece and repeat 10 and 11
cover the edges.
add tarnish if desired.
ooh and ah over your final piece.

Thinking about w359 and dnd stats and if building Douglas F Eiffel we'd put 1 bonus to con, 1 bonus to int, and the rest to charisma. And then thinking about how he and Cutter are foils and they would have the EXACT same technical build but Cutter would be a way higher level

my drop in the bucket of the awesome andor analysis going on rn: I saw people pointing out how Dedra keeps tugging at her collar and thinking this is showing a desire to escape the chokehold of the empire. I disagree, Dedra is incredibly suited to her role. She isn’t pulling at her collar, she’s adjusting it. She’s making it fit her better, symbolizing her making the ISB suit her in order to achieve her goals.
Additionally, the emphasis Syril has on getting his uniform tailored or fixing his appearance shows him squeezing their grip tighter. He needs that oppression to survive, as he’s spent his life under the thumb of his mother and knows no other way out than to please his oppressors.
This is in direct contrast to Cassian, who knows nothing but to fight his way out. But why the difference? We can gather that Syril grew up on Coruscant, in a sterile and cookie cutter society, pulled along by his mother. Whereas, Cassian was born into the native people on Kenari, and even after being taken to Ferrix, he became part of their traditions and culture. This is why Cassian and Syril are the perfect foils to each other - one comes from vibrant cultures, one is the product of a mechanical society. One can’t help but fight, one knows nothing but oppression - continuing the theme of tyranny requiring constant maintenance, and of culture being rebellion in itself.

For a birthday gift for a friend, who is a small pokemaniac, I crafted a Mew stone carving (from the first Pokemon movie) out of polymer clay.
I used Adobe Illustrator to trace a screenshot and 3D-printed a cookie cutter and stamped it into the polymer clay and added additional stone texture with a ball of aluminium foil. After baking it at 130°C (266°F) for 40 minutes I used the crappiest acrylic paint I own. I had an abundance of it and didn't want to waste my expensive paint I use for my miniatures. It did the job anyway but the paint is darkening so much when dry that they turn almost black. With a liberal amount of white and other brighter paint (yellow, orange, red) I got to the end eventually.
