"Papa told me I remind father of someone he misses. I will live up to that." It's tough being the oddball out, son to the city's, Baldur's Gate, father of Innovation and the Fanciest Bard of Cormyr, Caelan McClain has some shoes to fill. His love for firearms passed down from his late aunt, whose memory is faded but her legacy lives on in his creations. He's having a hard time making friends, not a lot of people appreciate the brains it takes to build a gun. But he'll surely wear someone down. Please give a respectable wave to the party's Artificer. A Quandrix student, of course. (Don't touch him though he does not like physical contact)

Pretender, d'you mind having a closer look around? Maybe see if there are any distinctive logos or markings on anything. I'll treat us to some snow cones after for having to work during down time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Yeah, sure. I'll poke around. What's the worst that can happen?"
Tumblr media
Round 4, Day 3 - ALL TEAMS (Event)
The Pretender and his Masters, fueled by curiosity, begin poking around. His hand grazes something, as magical runes begin to twist and burn, and the ground itself stirs.
The Grail stirs.
As if instinct, the Pretender retreats, understanding that something massive has been triggered.
Tumblr media
The earth shakes, as a gargantuan machine pulls itself forth. A mechanical god, massive in both presence and stature makes itself known. A divine entity made from mankind's hands, with a lone man sitting on the shoulders. There's a look in the man's eyes-- amusement. This is earlier than he expected.
"Ah-- early? Of course, of course. That must mean too many of you were playing it safe… you had time to poke around. That's not interesting, not interesting at all! Don't worry, though. I'll help spice things up!"
Tumblr media
The Ruler and the Foreigner barely make it out of the house of mirrors, diving to the ground as it collapses.
Soldiers, wielding heavy weaponry begin pour out of the rubble. They seem to manifest as if they were air, scattering themselves.
Tumblr media
The Avenger, battling the guard hound, finds himself momentarily distracted by the noise as a fierce jaw tears through his cloak. Shadow leaking from his body, he jumps away, retreating to see where the source of these tremors came from.
Tumblr media
The MoonCancer, her body pierced by the Alter-Ego's blades, stumbles backwards in pain. The Alter-Ego raises her leg for another damaging blow, but is momentarily stopped.
Tumblr media
Heavy footfalls thunder down streets. The sun finds itself slowly swallowed by smoke. Laughter, excited and maddening, echoes from the man standing on the mechanical god. A restoration- a revolution- a new world order of his making imposing itself on the confines of the digital space. 'Mages use Reality Marbles, geniuses twist reality with their bare hands', he thinks as he throws his head back, cackling.
When you see their advance, uncertainty grabs at your senses. When you hear their name, fear strikes your heart. And the man on the mechanical deity yells it loud enough to rival the thundering of the shaking earth.
"Advance, Kiheitai!"
Behold, the warrior of innovation. The Heroic Spirit of Firearms. Those who have blazed their way through history with ash and gunpowder, setting the world ablaze in their trail with a hail of bullets.
Behold--

Do you have any thoughts on Weaverdice? I haven't looked into it meself but I heard it's like a very bastardized version of Worm. Which is weird, because didn't Wildbow himself make Weaverdice?
weaverdice is really bad but unlike many ttrpgs i think are bad i think it's bad in novel and interesting and valuable ways. it's bad because wildbow clearly does not have the skill of 'game design' and so it consists of about two dozen entirely separate mechanics with basically no connective tissue -- it's in a weird spot where wildbow's mode of thinking about TTRPGs in general is heavily simulationist but then the ruleset is nowhere near heavy (or complete, it's on it's third edition now and none of the editions have been finished) enough to actually carry that simulation forward so it ends up being very fiddly and confusing to very little payoff in terms of delivering on the Simulationist Feel for a lot of people who like that thing. like lots of rules that are like 'here are the specific stats and prices of several different types of Gun' like what you might find in a GURPS manual but none of the underlying detailed rules about firearms and accuracy that make those stats valent in GURPs.
it's definitely got a systematized take on powers and generation that doesn't really retrofit to what was going on in worm, which is probably why you've heard it's 'bastardized'-- however i will conditionally defend this take by saying that for one of the core (and imo best and most interesting and most worth stealing and innovating on) mechanics of the game, which is table character generation with no player choice involved, this systematized approach is actually useful and necessary. it's silly that it gets applied outside that context, but i do think that within the context of a table generating powers for each other it's a pretty good way to go about it.
it has all the classic problems of someone's first TTRPG project--the math is absolutely fucked beyond reasonable repair, the scope of the project vastly outweighs the amount of time and work available to be put into it, the creator has read/played a limited number of TTRPGs and so has access to a limited creative toolkit to express things that those toolkits aren't really designed for--i definitely wouldn't recommend playing it. but it's interesting to read and think about at least!

"At the time when the Second Amendment was written, they only had slow-firing muskets!"
Yes. That is true. Nevermind the various early firearms that allowed large volume fire, they were also trying to find all manner of different ways to streamline the reloading process for the individual militia-man. To find ways to get a quicker and quicker second shot.
Case in point: the pre-packaged cartridge packs. Complete with a preset amount of powder, and appropriate-sized ball of lead. The paper itself being used as a wad to help propel the aforementioned ball of lead. A complete single shot in one palm-sized package.
It's a lot more streamlined than trying to measure the exact amount from a singular pouch of powder.
Not to mention the military doctrine of the time required constant training to be able to load and re-load their "slow firing" muskets as fast as possible. Usually to be ready to fire in a minute's notice. Hence the term "Minutemen".
If somehow 18th century firearms designers saw the capabilities of modern military arms, they wouldn't be terrified. They'd be salivating. John Hancock probably would've bought 13.
Too often people will sneer at the level of technology of 18th century societies, believing the people of the time were a bunch of doodles who believed putting feathers on their caps made them macaroni. But remember that there indeed were absolute geniuses during the 18th century.
It's much like how there's a Victorian-era misconception that the 15th century was full of backwards peasants when said time period was full of technological innovation.
So please, if you're going to make the "Second Amendment only applies to muskets!" argument, at least learn about the surrounding circumstances before you do.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go rock out.

The Setting
Bougainville
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A quaint town with a population of 10,000. Located in the Pas-de-Calais department of Northern France, it is an amalgamation of days past and modern times; preserving its original construction from 150 years ago while intertwining with modern-day advancements.
History
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The town was founded in the late 1800s by Olivier Bougainvillea: a renowned physicist from Paris who led a scientific expedition to the area that would later be known as Bougainville. The goal of his expedition was to study unusual electromagnetic radiations within the area. He set up a research base that would inadvertently grow with the influx of scientists and researchers Bougainvillea recruited to participate in his research. The growing scale of Bougainvillea's research necessitated better infrastructure and living facilities; resulting in the arrival of more labor for construction. The rapid influx of people now requiring long-term accommodation in the area demanded more housing, and soon the base had transformed into a small hamlet. Thus, began the settlement of Bougainville. As time passed, the families of the workers and researchers had relocated to the area; operating independent businesses to fill demands such as clothing, food, and other essential supplies. And as the economy grew, so did the settlement. More merchants and businesses settled in the hamlet, and soon, what was once a research base became the town of Bougainville: named after the lead scientist that pioneered the settlement of the area and powered the town with his discoveries and innovations. In honour of his legacy, Bougainvillea flowers line the front of almost every street, creating a beautiful sight at every turn.
Geography
Tumblr media
Bougainville has Calais to the north, Le Portel to the west, Lumbres to the east, and Desvres to the south. It is nestled adjacent to the Parc naturel regional des caps et marais d’Opale. As such, lazily drifting fog and chilly weather are a permanent fixture in the small town, perfectly complementing its slow, leisurely lifestyle. A river divides the town into two sides: West and East. Western Bougainville is its central business district; housing the entertainment district and the shopping district; as well as the town hall, Bougainville bank, and police station. Eastern Bougainville is the town’s health and education district; being the location of Bougainvillea University, Bougainville General Hospital, and the Bougainvillea Foundation’s central laboratory; which is open to the public as a science museum. To the north of the town is the Emilie Francoise Nature Reserve, which is 1000 acres of protected marshland and forest. It is also here that the Bougainvillea Power Plant is located; which provides electricity to the entire town.

any favorite obscure firearms?
See, this one is tricky- a lot of "obscure" firearms today have gotten second lives through games and such depicting them, so "obscure" is much more subjective these days. If we're going by lesser-produced pieces and sheer cool factor, I think my pick would have to be the Walther WA2000:
Tumblr media
An extremely finely-tuned bullpup sniper rifle intended for German military use, it had some really innovative design features for the time, but it was too fragile and HEINOUSLY expensive even then, and very few were produced. At retail, it was something to the tune of $9000-$12,000, and these days you can snag a second-generation WA2000.... for fourty thousand dollars.
With its unique look, it's shown up in a few movies tho! They were "shotguns" in the movie Equilibrium, and Timothy Dalton's James bond used one in The Living Daylights- pretty cool to see them now and then, they're pretty distinctive!

I've been mulling over how to give mermaids guns. Underwater combat is three dimensional and the water pressure around you is different from air pressure. There are modern guns that people claim can be fired under water, and with the supernatural elements of the setting i can very much invent a reason for why these guns are fine in water. The one thing im troubled with is what guns would be practical, and how they would be used in combat. Do you guys have any ideas?
So, Glock liked to advertise that you could fire their handguns underwater. That's technically true, but it's more of a marketing thing than a practical option. The “real,” danger that they were discussing was if a barrel is partially obstructed by water. For example, if you need to use your handgun, and have been running around in the rain, or worse, if you've accidentally dropped your gun in the mud and retrieved it. They were saying was that the gun would still operate safely under those conditions. You could have rainwater in the barrel and still shoot someone without a catastrophic failure.
So, this a major problem for most guns? Well, no. Or at least, not normally. Back in the 80s, polymer frame handguns were new and not widely understood. The Glock was characterized as a, “plastic gun.” You can even see this in contemporary media portraying the Glock as being able to pass through metal detectors because, “it's plastic.” (In reality, over 80% of the weight of an unloaded Glock 17 is steel.)
Now, the firearms market (and this applies to civilian, military, and law enforcement purchasers) tends to be extremely technologically conservative. Reliability is paramount, and any design innovation that could be perceived as a reliability issue (at least without offering something extremely enticing as a trade-off) will struggle to find buyers. While I've never heard an official statement on the subject, I suspect that Glock's advertising of the pistol's durability had more to with overcoming it's reputation as, “a plastic gun.” Even with that campaign, it still took them 15-20 years, with wide-scale law enforcement and military contracts, to fully shake that reputation.
The problem with firing a gun underwater isn't that it won't work; it's that the bullet's not going to go very far. Usually less than 2 meters. Even CAV-X rounds, which are designed to operate underwater tend to have an effective range of around 60m. Water creates an immense amount of friction on the bullet, and unless you're basically using the gun as a melee weapon (or using some very cutting edge rounds), the projectile isn't going to reach its target.
So, what are the options?
I don't know where you're going with Mermaids, but if you're digging into Atlantis myth, then there's always orichalcum, the mythical mountain gold from which the island derived its wealth. Often times orichalcum is described as possessing magical properties. (As far as I can remember, it was just a mundane, if rare, ore in Plato's original description. It's elevation to a magical material came later. So there's no consistency on what this could allow. But, magically hydrophobic bullets that have an orichalcum tip, are not any more fantastical than mermaids.)
Of course, if you're running with, Atlantis, Lemuria, or any other lost continent myth, then already have a justification for technology that is literally thousands of years more advanced than what you'll find on the surface. So, some kind of high energy, light based, weapon wouldn't be off the table. You might even be able to use something like a focused sonic shock gun, to use the water density itself to remotely deliver a kinetic impact on the target.
As for how you would use guns in a three dimensional space, you'd need to remember that up and down exist. Some concepts like cover and concealment would remain unaltered. But, engagements in open water could be extremely dangerous, as there may not be anything to protect you for, literally, miles in any direction. Once you get past that point, it starts to spiral out into full world building. Asking questions like what does warfare look like, when the most direct route between two points may be a vast void of nothingness, with no place to hide? Conversely, if they tend to stick close to the sea bed, then it's not going to be that different from conventional warfare, except for the part where they can freely move up and down to make use of available terrain and structures with combat, potentially, taking place across any surface.
There's a lot of potential, but most of it will be in creating a new world, and deciding the kinds of characters which inhabit it.

Dethklok texting headcanons!
Nathan: has caps lock on all the time. he basically always growls when he speaks normally so he wants to have the same effect over texts. probably signs his name after most texts.
(example: HEY CHARLES WE ARE OUT OF CHIPS. CAN WE GET LIKE FIFTY BAGS OF DORITOS? THANKS -NATHAN)
Toki: spells things wrong a lot. the others aren’t sure if it’s like meme speak or if he just doesn’t know how to spell. it’s a combo of both. likes emojis and memes
(example to the group chat: woulds you stills likes me if i was a worms? 🥺
Swkisgaar: i don’ts like you now
Toki: ☹️)
Skwisgaar: one word answers. ya, ok, no. that’s it. doesn’t like texting. not even sexting.
Pickles: memeing it up with Toki. doesn’t send words often. just sends the guys tiktoks and weird memes. likes sending pics of weird t shirts. spells things wrong because he’s drunk)
(example: Pickles: Tokiiii i woyld stll leik you if you was a werm
Toki: 🥹
Swkisgaar: gets off the group chats… go be homoesketuals in private)
Murderface: writes whole ass paragraphs. sometimes it’s like a 5 page essay. it’s always something that no one else cares about and he just infodumps in the group chat.
(example: Murderface: The Civil War is often referred as one of the first "modern" wars in history as it included the most advanced technology and innovations of warfare available at the time. Some of the advances and innovations of the Civil War included mass production of war materiel, rifling of gun barrels and the use of the Minié ball, the advent of repeating firearms and metallic cartridges, transportation railroads with armed locomotives, ironclad warships, submarines, one of the first uses of air corps for aerial reconnaissance, communication (especially the telegraph), advances in medicine and the gradual decline of tactics from previous centuries.

Whenever I hear people trying to convince themselves that the “Second Amendment means that people could own only muskets and nothing more”, I think about the innovations to firearms and other weapons that were already being attempted and implemented for nearly 300 years before the American Revolution. Various cannons, machine gun precursors, and more. The reason the Founding Fathers said “arms” instead of “muskets” is because they were very much aware of the fact that technology could and would change. It already had been changing.

“The founding fathers wouldn’t want this”
“The founding fathers meant something different”
The founding fathers thought women were sex toys and black people should be enslaved forever
Who gives a fuck about what the founding fathers want? They’re ll racists and rapers and are burning in hell for their crimes against god
But sure let’s let those horrible founding fathers guide us through our civilization because they sure know about machine guns/tanks/Facebook/phones/cars/anything at issue in the world
They gave us a framework, one they knew wasn't perfect so they also included a way to change it but made it so changing it would be difficult so it couldn't be done a whim.
As for firearms they likely saw repeating arms becoming a thing as well as many other things, consider some of their ages when they put pen to paper.
My grandfather was born before commercial radio was a thing, when he died he'd seen us go land on the moon and have Dick Tracy's watch radio become reality in the form of smartwatches.
His father saw the birth of the automobile and airplane, electricity put to wide use, served in both world wars, saw man land on the moon, and all kinds of other innovations. Mother much the same except the world wars bit.
I've been around since before the CD, home computers, and the internet and look where we are now with all of that.
Foolish to think they wouldn't anticipate improvements in all walks of life, also several of them were abolitionists just not enough of them sadly.
That sex toy bit is untrue as well, as a blanket statement at least Franklin was a manwhore, but women were partners back then, there was tons of sexism and sexist laws and all that (not so) good stuff, really though who wasn't.
Like I said they left us a mechanism for change and if you can convince enough people that your position is the good one that change can happen.
Good luck given that there's only been 17 after the initial 10 needed to get the states signed on post revolution and one of those was there to cancel out the other (prohibition was a dumb idea)
I see that crimes against God thing there too, got bad news for you about a lot of the people involved in the major world faiths from when they were formed.
Whew lads.
But hey, most of them have abandoned the majorly bad bits, don't stone children for cursing their parents anymore and such, slavery is strongly frowned upon by most of the 10 global religions with the most adherents.
Buck up buttercup, things get better, takes time is all.

A captivating fact about Sengoku warlords is that Oda Nobunaga, known for his military prowess, was also an early adopter of Western-style firearms. He recognized the strategic advantage of firearms in battle and successfully incorporated them into his armies, contributing to his innovative approach during the Sengoku period.

Sorrow is an Autumn Heart bibliography
October 16, 2022 is the day I put up the first chapter of what I still refer to as the spookyfic, and I'm overwhelmed and delighted that people are still finding it enjoyable. @letsgetempirical asked about the bibliography, and because I still have a lot of the info and wanted to do something for the ficiversary, here we go!
some notes: this is in two sections. The first section is the officially-formatted version (Chicago style) of stuff I knew I would need to refer back to or would definitely be using something from and remembered to put in Zotero while I was looking at it. The second section is...all of the links I zipped away into onetab when the fic was done. It's much less coherent. Not everything in here showed up in the fic, either--some stuff was just me following rabbit holes that looked interesting, or finding out that whatever I was looking at wouldn't fit for whatever reason.
Some of the jstor links are very ugly and I apologize for that. I also apologize that not all of the sources are going to be publicly available, as I was using university library access through work. The gun stuff in particular was maddeningly hard to get Anglophone sources on. I also just gave up on food at some point which is why the only visible meals in this story are the two from Usagi's recovery, and which I still managed to fuck up by forgetting the difference between yams (native to Japan) and sweet potatoes (from south america via pourtugese traders, not at all widespread). c'est la vie.
I WOULD like to shout out three of my absolute favorite open-access sources I found while researching this: Sengoku Daimyo, an SCA site that consistently had specific terminology or details I needed and whose 'Calendar and Time' page was probably my single most frequently consulted website; Shinsen On-Hiinagata: A New selection of Respected Patterns, which is a genuine Early Edo period book of kimono patterns and where I got the chrysanthemums kosode Leo wears in chapter 3; and The Rice Harvest, an online game where you play through a rice growing season in the Edo Period as resource manager. Yeah. I never managed to get all the way through because it was more time than I had to invest when I wanted to get back to writing, but its existence delights me and it DID teach me what tea orchards were.
