“Just once” his cheeks and nose are ruddy from the alcohol and the heat of the pub. So packed with bodies it was akin to a can of sardines. the air itself heavy and moist and just uncomfortably hot and sticky. You needed a breather.
Why he followed you outside into the snow was a mystery at first, he seemed quite busy loudly telling some story you weren’t listening to, scouse accent thickening further with every sip of his fourth pint of the night. It wasn’t a mystery anymore, no, not after he lit the cigar.
“I just, I dunno” you mumbled a bit, uncomfortably tipsy after Johnny and Kyle egged you on to take a couple more shots than you should have.
“Give it a try, eh?” He was holding it close to your face, between his thick and hairy knuckles. A slow stray flake melted on an old scar on his forefinger. “See how you like it, Sunshine”
Perhaps against your better judgment, brain thoroughly soaked in whiskey and beer, slow roasted by the heat maybe, you wrapped your lips around the leaf and breathed in.
Not even a second later you pulled away with a choking cough. Holy fuck, that burned.
He laughed roughly, deep and loud. Not a sound you hear often. real, genuine. He pat your back between your shoulder blades as you hacked out the smoke.
“You don’t breathe it in darling” he lightly scolded, taking a puff of the damned thing.
“How the fuck do you smoke it then?” You blurted, making him chuckle.
“Just hold the smoke in your mouth, here”
He all but slots the tip of it between your lips, tasting the bitter leaf.
“Slowly” he guides, and you can do nothing but oblige. Slowly, smoke fills your mouth, and you hold it there until he pulls away. You exhale into the night.
“How was that, then?” He asks through thick smoke.
“I have a headache now” you grumble, and he laughs into the dark.
(Wrote this while listening to “to someone from a warm climate”. Important vibe me thinks. Haven’t written in a long while so I hope this is bearable 💀)
