The Sign of Four: The Story of the Bald-Headed Man

The Victorians were rather into what is known as chinoiserie, the European imitation of Chinese and other East Asian artistic traditions, although the popularity had somewhat peaked by this point.

The stethoscope had been invented in France in 1816 by René Laennec and the two-ear version was commercially available from 1852. The practice before and without one - see A Study in Scarlet - was to listen to the chest by applying your ear directly too. This was a bit awkward when dealing with a woman, the reason Laennec invented it in the first place.

Since tobacco came to Europe, there have been people who couldn't stand the smell. James I of England/James VI of Scotland wrote A Counterblaste to Tobacco in 1604, one of the earliest anti-smoking works. He would impose an import tax on tobacco, then later made it a royal monopoly.

It was also considered taboo to spoke in front of women for much of this period; hence the use of smoking rooms. It was also seen as unladylike for a woman to smoke at all; if she did, it evoked an image of prostitution. Unless you were working class, in which case women widely smoked.

Hookah comes from the Hindustani word "huqqa". Hindustani is also known as Hindi-Urdu; Hindi being the Devanagari-written version used in India and Urdu the Pakistani version written in the Persian alphabet. Both countries have tried to make their two versions somewhat distinct; Hindustani is not used in official terminilogy in either. In speech, the two are pretty much mutually intelligible, if you keep things simple.

The hookah remains popular in South Asia and the Middle East; smoking is not specifically prohibited in the Quran, but in recent decades, a number of very prominent clerics have declared it haram (forbidden). In much of Europe and North America, indoor smoking bans cover hookahs, places that offer them have had to switch to tobacco-free version.

In any event, hookah smoking is really bad for your health - you're basically inhaling the equivalent of 100-200 cigarettes in a single session.

Gestures I've learned from Hindi films

Learning a language involves so much more than just learning grammar and vocabulary - it includes non-verbal communication and gestures, which we know make up for a whole chunk of human interaction, especially if you are a learner and sometimes at a loss for words. Here are some of the gestures I hadn't really seen before I started watching Hindi films, but pretty soon I noticed they are very meaningful and sometimes speak more than words alone.

Greetings

It didn't take long for me to notice that there seem to be two distinct and common hand gestures for greetings, the namaste-gesture being perhaps more universal of the two. It signals a polite welcome or greeting. It has also been described to hold a meaning along the lines of "the sacred in me recognizes the sacred in you" [source].

Above Madhuri Ji is showing another greeting called adab or aadab, which can be accompanied by the phrase आदाब अर्ज़ है when greeting and ख़ुदा हाफ़िज़ when parting.

Touching feet

In many films, we can see younger people touching their elder's feet, or as above a wife attempting to touch her husband's feet. This is an Indian custom to show respect. In response, the person touching the feet receives आशीर्वाद, a blessing, when the elder touches their head.

Nazar na lage

This gesture wasn't that self-evident to me at first. It's usually shown when seeing a beautiful person or a precious moment and the person making the gesture is attempting to protect that sight or person from the evil eye - sort of what the English-speaking world uses the phrase 'knock on wood' for.

Pakka

Pinching one's throat with thumb and forefinger and saying पक्का indicates the same, as when in the Western world we would show up two or three fingers as in "Scout's honour" - swearing that what we're saying is true.

Sorry

Pulling down one's earlobes with both hands is a gesture of genuine apology. There are several explanations for this that I've seen but one that I found perhaps most plausible, is that it's apparently linked to a known embarrassing punishment where a wrongdoer is asked to do squats while holding their earlobes, and touching one's ears indicates that the person is so sorry that they would even be ready to accept such a punishment. Pinky finger

Oh this was a fun one the first couple of times I saw it and I had to guess its meaning just from the film context alone. Showing one's pinky finger indicates that the person needs to use the bathroom urgently. Some sources I found say it's used in real-life situations mostly by children and it's not quite common or the most polite gesture among adult peers.

Beckoning

This beckoning gesture with the palm facing downwards was completely new to me as well but makes so much sense that I have actually adopted this one in my daily life. So whereas usually in Europe and in the Western world the 'come here'-gesture is made with the palm facing upwards, in India and in many places in Asia that gesture is considered very rude and only suitable for dogs if even them. My natives around me may think I'm silly beckoning my children this way but at least I'm not being unintentionally rude to anyone in the process.

Appreciation

Forming a circle by touching the tips of the thumb and index finger seems to be the Indian equivalent of thumbs-up - it's shown when something, like food, is very good and recommended.

favorite piece of disability history is Hand Talk. as i understand it, the history of sign language in settler society is one in which "home sign" - the private sign language of families with Deaf members - gave way to local signed argot as a constantly-developing spectrum of contact languages between different home signs, which gave way to the two major sign language families, French Sign Language and British Sign Language, in the late 18th century, when formal education for the deaf brought together people from so many areas that the formation of a contact pidgin was daunting.

(as a sidebar, this has the interesting side effect that despite both being glossed into and taking core elements of grammar and vocabulary from English, ASL and BSL are genetically unrelated, with radically different signing spaces, grammar, and approaches to novel words and phrases. both look not just like gibberish to native speakers of the other, but only barely recognizable as sign language at all.)

there's a wrinkle in that story, though. one of the first adopters of French Sign Language outside of France was a school for the deaf in America located in Massachusetts, which relied on the existing substrate of contact pidgins between home signs in New England.

which included a tremendous substrate of indigenous sign language. native North America has one of those problems that can turn into opportunities in human history; it is blessed and cursed with hundreds, possibly once thousands, of languages. there are on the order of a dozen major language families indigenous to the borders of the united states. not languages, families. the eastern seaboard of the united states, an area approximately the size of western europe, contains five big enough to show up on a map, with some modern US states there containing as many as three. for context, you can go from Portuguese to Hindi without leaving indo-european, from Malay to Hawaiian without leaving austronesian. the only large areas with a similar density of language families i know of are Papua New Guinea and India (and, of course, South America). in some limited areas this lead to spoken linguas franca. think Chinuk Wawa, the contact pidgin of the Pacific Northwest. these languages would be simple, easy to learn by outsiders to the language family, and with a dramatically reduced vocabulary, grammar, and sound inventory compared to their nearest relatives.

but this was not tremendously common east of the Rockies, because a signed lingua franca already existed. known as Hand Talk, it was understood by a wide cross-section of society - depending on the area, familiarity ranged from "specialists sign and understand Hand Talk for purposes of communication on long journeys" and "nearly everyone knows basic vocabulary in Hand Talk". it can be divided into a number of dialect areas, but all of them are at least slightly mutually intelligible and rely on similar signing spaces and approaches to signing words.

many more words are shared by Hand Talk and ASL than can be explained by coincidence, and to someone familiar with ASL elements of Hand Talk are surprisingly familiar, likely because ASL developed alongside an already quite mature and functional sign language and freely borrowed what its creators could comprehend. and during the 19th century "kill the Indian, save the man" era, schools to which ndn children were sent by the state would punish both Deaf and hearing students for using Hand Talk in the same ways they would punish them for using their own spoken or written languages. i am loath to use "cultural appropriation" in the usual sense generally, but it's hard to say anything else when settlers strip-mine a language for parts then try to exterminate it.

despite these efforts to extinguish it, Hand Talk still exists, having been signed continuously by Deaf and hearing speakers since time immemorial, and can be learned today. it is undergoing something of a revival at the moment. look it up! it's cool stuff. it strikes me as especially neat that, where European society tended to treat the Deaf as second-class citizens at the best of times and even now literacy in sign language is not commonplace, at one point indigenous societies across North America relied on sign language to communicate across vast distances and esteemed Deaf signers as the most fluent communicators by hand

hi Q! hope ur days been good ^_^ and i hope u dont mind me asking a few language related questions. besides english, what language have you been learning the longest ? also, what motivates you to pick up new languages?

To the contrary, everyone here is required to send me LOTE questions ON THE DAILY.

My longest-studied language is French, I started in 2019 after discovering Astérix and the special interest activating pretty much instantly. I remember the moment super well. Studying the art of translating Astérix made me decide I wanted to be a translator and from there my passion for languages grew. I think it helped that I knew French wasn't the most linguistic diversity languages had to offer. I went onto Swedish after that, and got just far enough to read Pippi Longstocking, and then I got into Arabic, and did it for Year 11 and 12. Arabic is on hiatus at the moment, and I highly doubt I'll ever go back to Swedish.

Motivation is mostly just that besides Astérix, it's my special interest, so I wasn't going to be doing much else with my time anyway. If we're talking more specifically about what leans me towards certain languages, I think the 1) size of its speaker-base (Chinese, Hindi, Arabic) 2) how much work it is (I like having a language that really gets my brain turning, which is why I've mostly abandoned Europe, having to be dragged kicking and screaming to learn Spanish) 3) interest in its speakers and etymology and/or proximity to Australia (Yiddish, Vietnamese) and 4) interest for other special interest reasons (French, Japanese (ダンロン、セカオワなどのおかげで)). To be frank, though, most of my choices are based on whims that I stick with because "might as well". I got to a certain level in Japanese where I thought to myself, well, what else am I doing?

Rambling Thoughts on Lifeweaver and The Collective

So I've been thinking about how Lifeweaver and The Collective fit into the story campaign for Overwatch since Season 4 started. Lifeweaver's story of being a wanted criminal by Vishkar and joining The Collective is super interesting, and no matter what the devs have said so far, I really do think he, along with the Collective as a whole, are going to start a partnership or even join forces with Overwatch.

The Collective and The Martins

From what I've gathered with Esperança, Lifeweaver's bio, and all the Season 4 narrative interviews, Cláudio Martins is the inventor of durovidro (translated in Google to hardglass), and together with his husband, Hector Martins, they created the sea wall that protects the shores of Portugal and Spain from the rising sea level and to also later serve as a siege defense for the countries against Anubis during the First Omnic Crisis.

Here's where it starts to get confusing for me. Lifeweaver's bio refers to Vishkar's founder being dead by the time biolight was invented. I want to assume that durovidro is hardlight and that Cláudio is the defacto inventor and founder of hardlight, but he wouldn't be dead if that was the case. Torbjörn and Brigitte have a match start interaction on Esperança where they talk about how the Martins are currently living at the Atlantic Arcology so they can't be dead then unless they're living in denial that the Martins are dead. So that leaves 2 options: there is a second mystery inventor/founder of hardlight that has since died or corporate people who did a hostile takeover of Vishkar and shoved Cláudio out of the company and have since then created a narrative with a fake, deceased figurehead who has similar morals as Cláudio with the big difference being capitalism first, humanity second.

If there is a second inventor of hardlight then I think it's safe to say that their name is Vishkar. From a few websites on Google, the name Vishkar is a masculine name with Indian origins and means Prayer. Some websites associate the name with intelligence and Vishkar (spelled विष्कार or Vishkaar) is also a word in Hindi that translates to invention. This could also be the name of the fake figurehead at Vishkar.

I think that the other option is more interesting and not so open-ended so I'm going to continue talking about that instead. The timeline then becomes Cláudio invents hardlight, at some point creates his company and the company copyrights hardlight, gets ousted in a hostile takeover, the fake narrative is created and the company is renamed, and then Cláudio and Hector create the Atlantic Arcology and The Collective in international waters to bypass Vishkar's copyright on hardlight and continue working towards their original goals with hardlight being for humanity and to help communities in crisis.

There are some remaining plotholes. How did Reinhardt, Brigitte, Winston, and Orisa get their hard-light shields? Reinhardt was a Crusader during the Omnic Crisis and the Crusaders themselves were a paramilitary group during the crisis so Cláudio most likely let Germany and any other country use hardlight to defend themselves. Brigitte most likely got her shield from Reinhardt and modified it for herself, or the Ironclad Guild has a contract with Vishkar to use hardlight and she took it with her when she joined up with Reinhardt touring around Europe. I want to go with the personal headcanon that Cláudio sent Efi hardlight when she made the news. Winton has his because Winton Overwatch.

Another thing I'd like to just briefly mention is that in the translation for the announcer in the sea wall museum on Esperança that's available on the Overwatch wiki (thank you to whoever translated it to English), durovidro is described as being as hard as a diamond. While I'm looking at pictures to add to this post I've noticed the diamond symbol appearing multiple times when Vishkar is present in imagery. You can even see it below in their company logo and the hardlight the architechs and Lifeweaver are holding in their hands is shaped like a diamond. Just an interesting connection I saw.

How Lifeweaver Connects

So Lifeweaver runs away so Vishkar doesn't get their hands on biolight and eventually winds up living at the Atlantic Arcology. Chances are he's met Cláudio and Hector. The environmental and humanitarian outreach all three of them could do together with hardlight and biolight would be transformative. Biolight could replace portions of the Amazon Rainforest that have been burned down and while not having any needs and being a part of the oxygen cycle. They could also even act as sources of green energy.

And that's exactly where I think Overwatch comes in. The Collective has a level of recognition with Portugal and most likely Spain and operates outside UN jurisdiction and Overwatch is a group that is wanted by the UN and will need resources to operate. It practically writes itself I feel. Once Vishkar is revealed to be working with Talon someone in Overwatch will contact The Collective. They could show up even sooner. Brigitte and Reinhardt are unable to recruit Torbjörn but maybe he instead refers them to The Collective because of the outreach and help that Cláudio and Hector provided during the first crisis.

Lifeweaver joining Overwatch seems so natural as well. He would be the connecting character to progress Mei's climate story forward with Hector joining in as well. Lúcio and Lifeweaver have a strong dislike of Vishkar with their difference being how they interact with Symmetra so seeing them in a story where they show Symmetra all the lies she's been fed would be interesting. She's lived her entire life in Vishkar's world, listening to their narrative so finally stepping out of it would be a momentous occasion and dare I say, cinematic worthy. There are already interactions between them, but Mercy and Lifeweaver (and Baptiste too to set them up as a couple!) teaming up for humanitarian outreach in places that need medical aid. If there are no other architechs that end up joining Overwatch, he would still be greatly helpful to Winston, Brigitte, and Reinhardt.

i fucking love the effort put into this, for multiple reasons: 1) it's not the instrumentals and a guy singing. this dude RERECORDED THE FUCKING ALBUM! He would've had to mix this shit! This would've taken sooooooo long. 2) I like how it's not a language remotely close to english. finnish isn't even part of the same language family as english. finnish is a part of the uralic languge family (a group of languages comprising much of northern europe and asia).

most languages in europe are from Indo-european (english, spanish, french, swedish ect.) but don't be fooled, as this family also spreads out to many north indian and west asian languages (like hindi, pursian and pashto).

a lot of those languages share words (like the english 'three', punjabi 'ਤਿੰਨ (tina)' and greek 'tria'). but finnish? FUCK NO! three in finnish is 'kolme' (K from "king', ol from 'old' and 'me' from 'men') so that means this album has almost no words that sound ANYTHING like the original. The only two titles that sound and look like the original are "Pink Triangle" ("Pinkki Kilmio") and "El Scorcho", which is just same same cuz it's spanish. so the result is a set of songs that sound NOTHING AT FUCKING ALL like the originals, with many of the melodies having to be kinda stretched to include the new words and sounds that rivers cuomo never had the fortune of singing 3) OMG THIS WOULD'VE TAKEN SO LONG TO FUCKING TRANSLATE! when you translate you have to take in so much more than just the words themselves you have to take in: change in phrasing, tone, cultural references, how to get the same emphasis into this new language from the one your translating from. and it's SO much worse with poetry and songs. The beat sounds off, the rhyme is completely gone, many translations just sound like nonsense being read aloud if the original lyrics maybe don't rhyme or are more impressionistic. and this is kinda easier with languages like english to french or spanish or swedish that share some vocab and have roots in many languages. but again i will remind you that finnish has none of that familiarity, so how these sounds sound to finnish native speaker must just be WILD!

History of National Rice Pudding Day

National Rice Pudding Day celebrates the ancient rice pudding dish in all its glory and greatness. While we may know the sweet version of the dish today, did you know that it actually started out as a savory treat? It is difficult to pinpoint the exact location and time of the creation of rice pudding, but many scholars believe it may have originated in either ancient China or in ancient India. Both these countries have a long history of including rice as well as sugar in their religious and cultural activities, so it only makes sense that the combination of the two may have been included in their cuisines as well. ‘Kheer,’ which is Hindi for rice pudding, was first recorded in ancient India in 6000 B.C., and it was included as a staple in a prescribed Ayurvedic diet regime. It is also interesting to note that the early versions of the Indian rice pudding did not actually include rice or sugar. In place of rice, Indians made use of the cereal grain known as sorghum.

Are the Communists Quietly Taking Over the Congress Party?

On Tuesday, 16 April 2024, security forces carried out a major anti-insurgency operation in Kanker district of Chattisgarh and successfully neutralized 29 dreaded naxalite terrorists including a top naxal commander, Shankar Rao according to today news in Hindi.

Understandably, people all over the district, state and country received the news with a sense of relief particularly because the neutralized naxal commander, Rao carried a bounty of Rs. 25 lakhs on his head — dead or alive.

Ideally, you would expect all political parties cutting across ideological barriers to express relief at such a major success for the security forces just before elections, won’t you? Well, that’s not what the country’s main opposition party, the Indian National Congress thinks.

Most Hindi news and other media outlets reported that the former Congress chief minister of Chattisgarh, Bhupesh Baghel had issued a kneejerk reaction to the incident by terming it as a “Fake encounter”. Later, he backtracked from his earlier remark and issued a congratulatory note for the security force personnel involved in the operation.

As if that was not enough, a national level spokesperson of the Congress party while briefing the media, referred to the eliminated naxal terrorists as “Martyrs” as per today news in Hindi. Who would call a naxal neutralized in an encounter with security forces, “Martyr”? Obviously, only fellow naxals.

Does that mean the Congress believes in the naxal ideology of violence and sabotage against the government? If not, then why has the Congress termed the neutralized naxal terrorists as “Martyrs”?

The Congress spokesperson did not stop there if you go by today news in Hindi and went on to demand a high level investigation of the incident as if to suggest that this was some kind of a fake encounter. This is not just disgraceful but also a sinister ploy to harm the unity and integrity of the country.

Many political observers are of the opinion that these days Congress has taken a sharp turn towards left wing politics, which is visible in the way their maverick leader Rahul Gandhi goes about doing his politics.

Some day he goes into a temple, another day he is seen in Muslim attire complete with the netted skull cap, praying with Muslims and the next day he vanishes out of the country meeting designer leftists in Europe and America. Here in India, he has hired controversial communists like Kanhaiya Kumar and Supriya Shrinate, the Congress spokesperson who honoured the neutralized naxals as “Martyrs”.

Although Rahul Gandhi is not the party president, he is the one who takes decisions about whatever his party is doing, say observers on today news in Hindi. There are some people in Congress who will not agree with the branding of neutralized naxals as “Martyrs” but that group is as helpless as the party’s official president today.

The Congress Party’s association with the communists in India date back to the days of the freedom struggle when many communists had infiltrated the Indian National Congress just as they are doing now. If you look at the way India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru spoke and took decisions, there is not much difference between him and his great grandson, Rahul Gandhi.

If the Congress continues to move toward the left with no check it won’t be long before it goes the naxal way and many of its members get caught up with real world sedition. That will further marginalize this party even in areas where it has a strong base with local leaders to drive it. The results of this general election will set the tone for what happens to the Indian National Congress.
