Wake up. Get out of bed. Go to the bathroom. Don't look at the photos on the wall. Don't look in the mirror.

Wake up.

Brush teeth. Don't bother to shave. Shower. Change the bandages. Get dressed - not the leather jacket. Remember to burn the leather jacket.

Wake up.

Take the last week's dishes downstairs. Throw them on the pile. Make breakfast. Eat? Put it in the fridge for later. Don't think about what the boy in the glasses would say.

Wake up.

Tidy the living room. Put the books away. Pick up the dirty socks in the corner. Don't worry about the spiders. They've been here longer, anyway.

When will this tedious nightmare end?

Grab keys. Grab wallet. Pretend there's something in it. Grab coat. Pretend there's no blood or fur stuck to it.

Wake up.

Walk down the street to the bookstore. Stop searching faces. Say hello to Mrs. Gonzalez. Clock in. Don't think about the store's growing debt and slowing customers. Be grateful for the job.

Wake up.

Take inventory. Help a kid find a book on dogs. Try not to cry. Take an old man's box of dusty Shakespeares and listen to his story about his dead wife who collected tragedies. Try not to cry.

Wake up.

Eat an apple for lunch. Continue inventory. Don't look at the rat that lives in the back wall. Don't think about rats. Stop staring at the door in the hopes someone will come in.

Wake up.

Watch the sky outside start to get darker. Read the shitty thriller someone left on the desk. Clock out. Walk back down the street. Watch for the hole in the sidewalk in front of the Johnsons. Stop looking for black hair in the dark. Go home.

Wake up.

Take off coat. Put wallet and keys away. Heat up eggs from this morning. Don't be disgusted at reheated eggs. Don't think about how the brick is the same color as an old friend's hair.

Wake up.

Read until eyes burn. Check the clock. 7:57. Pretend that's a reasonable time to be this tired.

Can anything but the cycle fill the void?

Gather stuff for bed. Throw dirty clothes on the teetering bin. Get in bed. Lay awake for a few hours before drifting off into shallow nightmares.

Wake up.

Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”

Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”
