WIP Not Wednesday!
they're overrated anyways
Tagged by @totally-not-deacon and gonna tag my bestie @cedar990. I am also pointing a gun at @codenamehazard (realistically would also be yelling at another dear with a white-haired conduit but that's exclusive access :P)
No intro no context, let's go:
“What about the other rooms?” I huffed, trying to keep up with the men as I ran. God, I needed to work cardio back into my life.
“That doesn’t matter!” Dad insisted. There was a horrible grinding sound, and then crumbling as the concrete wall welded into the open doorway began to crack, gaps making the screams of the creatures behind it all the more clearer. “Shit,” Dad growled.

Erosion by charleslelurk
m/m rated E
Charles has measured his life in summers, life segmented into two time frames, Summer and Not Summer. There is life–Monaco, school, September through May–and then there is living–Italy, summer, premature birthday parties, and Max. He measures his life in the summers he spends on the Amalfi coast with Max, tolerating nine months of the year for the sweetness of three, until suddenly he doesn't.
Charles names every constellation he knows and Max points to them. Big Dipper, Little Dipper, Pegasus. He points out Virgo, their astrological sign.
“Happy Birthday, Max.” It’s not for weeks, but tonight was their birthday party, after all.
“Happy Birthday, Charles.”

On a quick pause while hiking down the trail, Teddy found these twisted roots, demonstrating the constant battle between erosion and life fighting to cling on to the little blue green ball we call home.

also like. why is it always childes character or lore getting shafted with the Critical mistranslations im. when will they learn 💀
the actual title for surtalogi aka "foul" is a completely different word from foul legacy in like. every single translation except eng. every single version got it better (its along the lines of "knight/rider of evil" across the board). and now ppl will be running off with the omg foul like foul legacy thing bc the translation literally lies to u what the fuck 😭😭
also like? its not like the actual title lacks connections with childe either bc im pretty sure ive seen it pointed out that the names of his c5 and c6 do explicitly parallel the cn title for surtalogi. so like for english why not put havoc somewhere in the title instead of this random ass "foul" business im so????

Despite not having lived there in decades, Dawn Island remains a steady part of his beating heart. The Midway Forest was his home, where he had grown, where he had survived and lived. The Windmill Village had been his to protect, to care for; offering them bounty from his hunts, fighting against cruler bandits and the stray pirate with wild teeth.
He loves them both dearly still, and even though his visits home are infrequent at best, the forest still lives within him. Its roots are entertwined with the very foundations of his being, no matter how far away he sails upon the sea.

Dungeon Meshi/Erosion Similarities
I don’t think I’ve talked about Erosion much on this blog (though I’d like to) but watching up to episode 8 of Dungeon Meshi before bed has made me notice some similar themes in them— and therefore some reasons why I’m so excited about both watching more DM and writing more Erosion
I’ll just info dump under the cut but! If you like learning about ecology casually I think it’s worth a read
SO OBVIOUSLY I don’t have a massive reference point for dungeon Meshi as a whole but what has been shown in the anime has hit a lot of points that I enjoy touching on.
Respecting your food and where it comes from, valuing life as a source of nourishment and a cycle, and understanding that interfering with any other ecological structure has long term effects that impact those cycles are a few things.
I think dungeon Meshi is really effective at getting the viewer to understand that these structures exist and how interacting with them can be healthy or to a detriment. Marcille explains how things must be structured to form cycles of life in a dungeon and Senshi is great at explaining sustainable interaction.
I think Erosion takes that a step further in abstraction: assuming the reader has some knowledge of where food tends to come from, and the hands that handle it before it arrives at the table for most people, it then tries to explain what things go /wrong/ when the structures and cycles are not respected and preserved (in a world that has toyed with these things for just long enough to show how things are crumbling and will crumble)
I think both show that interacting positively and productively with food is both rewarding yet “brutal” and bitter sweet. In Erosion Everett is already aware of the sacrifices that need to be made to bring meals to fruition through livestock and crops no matter the methods used, but Ambriel has to LEARN that just because getting food a certain way seems prettier or more detached (lots of vegan/organic options promote this) doesn’t guarantee sustainable or healthy results. A common example is the negative carbon footprint that pleathers have despite not taking an animals life to be produced (costing lives in the breakdown of the material)
I think dungeon Meshi plants the foundation for that, especially in the Kelpie episode, that resources can be raised with love and valued and still consumed with some “brutality” that still shows reverence to the source. Like I really love that about both of them, that they try to show you can love something and still have it for a use. To love something so much you use it in its entirety for the sake of an ultimate purpose.
I don’t know. I just wish more people thought about their food this way because I was taught this my entire life growing up on a farm and it encourages accountability and respect for the value of a meal ;v;
