by Emily Washburn | Focus on the Family joined 12 pro-life organizations on Tuesday opposing the multi-year renewal of PEPFAR, a federal HIV/AIDS relief program worth billions of dollars, over concerns the program’s funding supports pro-abortion organizations. People who have broken off a relationship with Dick Grayson:
Lori Elton (college girlfriend)
Koriand'r/Starfire
Emily Claire Washburn *
Barbara Gordon/Batgirl/Oracle
Cheyenne Freemont
Shawn Tsang/Defacer
Helena Bertinelli/Huntress
People who Dick Grayson has broken off a relationship with:
Catalina Flores/Tarantula
Bea Bennett
The ONLY reason Bea Bennett is on the second list is because editorial demanded she be out of the way when Tom Taylor took over the Nightwing series.
This post brought to you by the persistent fanon that Dick Grayson is a shallow player incapable of commitment.
ETA: I forgot about Emily Washburn, his fake wife from Nightwing Annual #1 - who he was perfectly willing to marry for real after the case was done but she said no for good reasons.

Hey there! The Dick Rare Pairs Poll is back with another round of sexy kisses ;)
As you know, no one can resist a kiss from Nightwing, not other heroes, not villains, and neither civilians!

I did have trouble deciding how to do this, because my popular favs would obviously far out pace everyone else. As such, there is going to be a popularity edition soon, with the more popular characters I adore.

'Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has been declared a masterpiece by the audience globally. The three-hour-long film has managed to impress fans to a great extent and many believe that this film is Nolan’s best work so far. Apart from the director, the cast of the film is also being lauded for their performance, especially Cillian Murphy as J Robert Oppenheimer. Florence Pugh who essays the role of Jean Tatlock, Emily Blunt as Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as Gen. Leslie Groves, and Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss are also garnering a lot of love from the audience.
Some scenes from the film have impacted the audience gravely. J Robert Oppenheimer’s interactions with Jean Tatlock, the team’s reaction to the testing of the bomb and the courtroom drama involving Lewis Strauss — the Oppenheimer hangover is real. A large section of the audience have also been discussing the one scene featuring Pugh. The tragic end of this character has rattled people, who cannot help but shake off the memories of the suicide scene. This has piqued people’s interest in knowing more about Jean Tatlock.
Born on 21 February 1914, Jean Frances Tatlock was raised by her parents in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her father, John Strong Perry Tatlock, was a professor of English at the University of Michigan. Just like her father, Jean also had a flair for writing. She finished her studies at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Williams College in Berkeley. After which, she entered Vassar College in 1930. She studied there for five years and returned to Berkeley to prep for Stanford Medical School. During this time, she worked as a reporter and writer for the Western Worker. It was an organ of the Communist Party of America.
Her hard work landed her in Stanford Medical School where she studied to become a psychiatrist. She was a graduate in 1941 after which she went on to intern at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. She then had a residency at the Department of Psychiatry at Mount Zion Hospital in San Francisco.
Her relationship with J Robert Oppenheimer
Jean Tatlock and J Robert Oppenheimer began seeing each other in 1936. She was still a graduate student while Oppenheimer was a professor of physics at Berkeley. At that time, Oppenheimer was known to be surrounded by Communist people and he was introduced to Jean at a fundraiser by his landlady, Mary Ellen Washburn, who was a member of the Communist Party.
Despite the age difference of 10 years, Jean Tatlock and J. Robert Oppenheimer shared a passionate relationship. Oppenheimer even proposed to Jean twice. She is credited to have introduced the physicists to radical politics. It was also Jean who introduced him to people involved with, or compassionate to, the Communist Party or related groups. However, the two did not end up together. Oppenheimer married Kitty Harrison in 1940, and it is said that he cut all ties with Jean post his wedding. He did, however, meet her at the Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco when he was working on the Manhattan Project. It was during this meeting that she told him that she still loved him and wanted to be with him. Oppenheimer never saw her again.
While she shared a dynamic relationship with the physicist, Tatlock also claimed that she was a lesbian. Many people suggested that there was a possibility that Tatlock had a relationship with Mary Ellen Washburn. In the 1940s, being a homosexual person was considered to be a pathological condition that could be cured. This struggle with understanding her sexuality could have been a reason for her suicide.
Jean Tatlock’s tragic death
Tatlock was diagnosed with clinical depression, for which she was receiving treatment at Mount Zion. It was the year 1944 when her father came to visit her at her apartment at 1405 Montgomery Street and found her dead. Her body was found lying on a pile of cushions in the bathroom. Her head was submerged in the partly-filled bathtub. She left a note where she talked about giving up. Oppenheimer was informed about her death while he was still working on the atomic bomb in Los Alamos. The physicist named the first test of a nuclear weapon “Trinity” which was a reference to the poetry of John Donne, something that was introduced to him by Jean Tatlock.
The conspiracy theory
Many historians and her brother, Hugh Tatlock, believed that her death was not truly a suicide. Conspiracy theories suggest that the lady was killed by intelligence agents working for the Manhattan Project. This theory has been depicted in the TV series Manhattan. And the very scene in Nolan’s film where a gloved hand can be seen for a brief moment, pushing her head under the water, could be a suggestion of this theory as well.'

Your Anon vaguely mentioned Emily Washburn and her son Dennis and I have arrived to gush about how much I love them.
They have appeared once and only once in a Nightwing annual in the 90s and the story itself was not well written or handled and wasn't my favorite but I am very attached to Emily and Dennis now.
Dick fake-married Emily specifically because her last three husbands had died under suspicious circumstances and obviously that was the best way to get to the bottom of the mystery.
But yeah Dick spends so much time in the issue with Dennis including taking him to the circus and playing superheroes with him and it's so cute.
I am entirely too attached to them both for the fact that they appeared in a single issue and have never been heard from since.
Anyway sorry for rambling about them I am obsessed.
THAT'S SO CUTE OMG

Back in, like, April 2020, I decided to make a Lockdown Project out of tackling some sizeable works of classic literature I'd been putting off due to the intimidating size of them. The first one I finished was Arthur Waley's translation of The Tale of Genji, an intimidating brick of a book I'd actually gotten in a bookshop in Japan. I really struggled with the early chapters--Waley's use (or misuse) of paragraphs made for a rough read--but started getting into it about Yugao, as I was startled to realize "woman represses feelings so hard that they take on a life of their own as an evil ghost and start killing people" as a subplot or sideplot that I'd seen in a lot of manga. It was so delightful to realize that this wasn't just a Weird Manga Thing, but a motif born of a thousand-plus years of Japanese literary tradition. Also, evil ghosts make every story better, that's just a fact. In later parts of the book, I think I found that the story suffered the same problem as Frankenstein for me; I find the titular character utterly fucking insufferable but many of the other characters rich and engaging. It's really stuck around in the back of my head for the last couple years, which I guess is how it's stuck around for a thousand years, so I've been meaning to reread it...
Tumblr media
But as I refuse to subject myself to Waley's translation style again, the normal response is to buy an even bigger brick of a more recent translation, right?
(All of the major translations I could find recommended are by men, and I'm not at all dismissing their ability or artistic merit; Washburn's already quite engaging to me. But I think it'd be really interesting, in the vein of Anne Carson and Dr Emily Wilson's translations of Greek classics, to see what might be done differently in the hands of a female translator, especially since the original work was by a woman.)

Tomei, Tudyk, Trejo, Swallow Among Additions to FAN EXPO Philadelphia In Next Wave of Celebrities
Tumblr media
Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, The Wrestler) and fan favorites Alan Tudyk (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, “Firefly”), Danny Trejo (Machete, The Book of Boba Fett), Emily Swallow (“The Mandalorian,” “Supernatural”) and Jeff Ward (“One Piece,” “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) are among the additions to the growing celebrity lineup at FAN EXPO Philadelphia, set for May 3-5 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Joonas Suotamo (Star Wars) and Diana Lee Inosanto (“Ahsoka”) round out the newcomers to the roster.
Marisa Tomei blasted onto the scene with her Academy Award winning performance as “Mona Lisa Vito” opposite Joe Pesci in My Cousin Vinny. After the Best Supporting Actress win, she went on to roles in Chaplin, Untamed Heart and the Paper, later appearing on Broadway before earning two more Oscar nominations, the third for The Wrestler. She also had a recurring role in the hit series “Empire” and appeared as “Aunt May” in three Spider-Man blockbusters.
Alan Tudyk gained fans’ attention when he starred as wise-cracking "Hoban 'Wash' Washburne" in "Firefly" and Serenity, and later grabbed the “Star Wars” fandom with his portrayal of “K-2SO” in Rogue One. He also appeared in Wreck it Ralph and 42 and has lent his voice to characters in hits like “American Dad,” “Harley Quinn,” “Transformers: Earthspeak” and “Star vs. the Forces of Evil.”
Danny Trejo has developed a prolific career in the entertainment industry with a hard-earned and atypical road to success. From years of imprisonment to helping troubled youth battle drug addictions, from acting to producing, and now on to restaurant ventures, Trejo’s name, face, and achievements are well recognized in Hollywood and beyond. He has starred in dozens of films including Desperado, Heat, the From Dusk Till Dawn series, Con Air, Once Upon A Time In Mexico, the Spy Kids movies, Machete and many more.
With her portrayal of “The Armorer” in “The Mandalorian” in the hit Netflix series “The Mandalorian,” Emily Swallow added another role to her growing resume. She also appeared as “Kim Fischer,” a regular on “The Mentalist” and as “Amara / The Darkness” in the 11th season of “Supernatural.” She also voiced the role of “Lisa Tepes” in the animated Netflix fantasy action series “Castlevania.”
Jeff Ward played “Deke Shaw” as a regular on “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” from 2017-2020, and most recently appeared in the first season of the Netflix adventure/comedy “One Piece.” Fans will also recognize him from his work in “Brand New Cherry Flavor” and the TV movie Manson’s Lost Girls, where he gave an appropriately creepy performance as the cult leader.
Joonas Suotamo has assumed the mantle of the iconic role of “Chewbacca” in numerous iterations of the Star Wars saga since first appearing as the Wookiee in Episode VII – The Force Awakens in 2015. The Finnish actor also stepped out of the familiar character to appear in four episodes of the Disney series “Willow.”
Diana Lee Inosanto appears as “Morgan Elsbeth” in the Star Wars “Ahsoka” production on Disney+, opposite Rosario Dawson, David Tennant and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. She originated that role in an episode of “Mandalorian” in 2020 after appearing in dozens of movies and shows as a stunt person and a variety of other entertainment jobs.
They join a lineup that already includes headliners Mario Lopez (“Saved by the Bell,” “Access Hollywood”), Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, “Gilmore Girls”), Felicia Day (“The Guild,” “Dragon Age: Redemption”), Ben McKenzie (“Gotham,” “The O.C.”), Holly Marie Combs (“Charmed,” “Picket Fences”), Adam Savage (“MythBusters,” “Unchained Reaction”), Michelle Hurd (“Star Trek: Picard,” “Law & Order: SVU”), Sofia Boutella (Rebel Moon, The Mummy) and Jason Lee (“My Name is Earl,” The Incredibles).
Single-Day Tickets, Three-Day Passes, Ultimate Fan and VIP Packages for FAN EXPO Philadelphia are available now. Advance pricing is available until April 18. More guest news will be released in the following weeks, including line-up reveals for additional headline celebrities, comic creator guests, voice actors and cosplayers.
Philadelphia is the eighth event on the 2024 FAN EXPO HQ calendar; the full schedule is available at fanexpohq.com/home/events/.

The truth of a secret
NCIS special agent Todd has a secret that could but the whole team into danger what happens when the news about the death of her dad triggers her powers to become stronger then she ever thought she could she will need to tell them before the nemesis of her youngest sisters best friend strikes again with a changed up mo she will have to reveal the secret to the rest of the team that doesn't know but how did the team take it.
One day after the news and secretly harnessing the new straight over distance training with her sisters (who became stronger as well )and a phone call she decides to tell the team one by one. Helene goes to sleep peacefully in her Alexandria apartment and Kate follows suit in her dc apartment while back in the sisters hometown Maura and Jane follow their night routine falling into bed side by side as they have done for a long time now back in her Beacon Hill home. The next morning Jane and Maura are faced again with the sculpting change in mo and Helene is enjoying a peaceful morning yoga session with both of her sisters and Jane’s as well. After yoga they all go off to work and Kate with a renewed sense of determination to help rid her sisters best friend of her personal nightmare she walks into work and sits down and goes though the files as the rest of the team filters in and she decides to go downstairs to train a bit more before Abby comes in to work. After finishing the training it hits her who it is with the files maura has sent over along with Claire’s on Lindsay’s personal nemesis she races back upstairs to the team all drowned in their own work and Salone waiting for her
Hey Kate whats up i've been waiting
Sorry Jack i was training and going though Mauras and Claires files and i found something
Then what is it Kate
Um i can't say because, she says gustering to her working team mates behind her and what will they think
Katie it won't matter their your family like the Rizzoli’s are mine they haven't treated you any differently sense they found out like my family you owe this to us we all have faith in you,Maura’s voice whispers though her necklace as Jack smiles and nods at Kate's smile and calls the attention of the bullpen
Gibbs and a majority of the team minus Tony looks at Kate's body language and face and smiles and he breaks the silence and gently says what do you got Katie
The jackpot Gibbs the victims all shows signs of multiple serial killers as you all and dr . Mallard after consulting dr. Washburn in san francisco the calling card of the kiss me not killer but if you all could note the missing hands and slit thorout the calling cards of Dennis Rockmond who recently kidnapped dr Isles the chief medical examiner of the commonwealth of massachusetts my home state and the calling card of the surgeon Charles Hoyt who is known for escaping for one condition and to kidnap bpd detective Jane Rizzoli four times for the last time on his deathbed with the me Dr.Isles so it is by my and Ducky’s personal and professional opinion to call them in because there is an fbi card and dna of agent Gabriel Dean on the body who knows all of these details thanks to captain connors and the warehouse shooting and unrelated but subsequent death of both Paddy Doyle jr. and sr and one of which only has three children with mend ceo and founder Hope Martin her only daughter Cailin Martin is a pre med student at bcu as she had previously believed the triplets to be dead but Paddy sent them to Constance and Autor Isles who are both well off in their own way she smiles at her family's photos and whispers to each of them a solo message to her dad you did what you could to protect us were the only thing you'd protect more firmly than your grasp on the city thanks for the letter dad well each read it when where ready i miss you we know you loved us in your own way and made sure Maura and we are safe you ended the terror and had them all turn themselves in each to life setnatnces to her mom and half sister we all love you we knew Maura would be the one to save you but you've made up for lost time see you both when i'm in town and to her mother and father the ones that raised her we all love you you protected us you got me here Helene to bcu and Maura to her best friend see you at the next istation mother thanks for trying and father thanks for trying to heal that rift between us love you both. She smiles and nods to Ducky”make the call as you already ran this by everyone who needs to know. She smiles with slight trepidation until she feels her surge of power knowing her sisters are safe a few hours later.
4 months earlier after Jane and Maura reconciled after the accident. At work the day after Kate loses balance with McGee and Torres on scene immediately knowing her sister over exerted herself and almost leads to her fainting but Gibbs helped them set her down and whispers in her ear(tell them katie) she nods and grasps the gem out of her necklace that hold the outfit that shows her true life and her real family.
Guys i need to show you something but you need to promise me not to tell Tony i can't risk him knowing this
They nod
She smiles and hugs them then here we go she lets the gem go flowing above her head shining brightly as ever and encases Kate in the light changing her outfit and hair to her half sisters hand made leather jacket her leather skirt with black tights and combat boots with a tight fitted dress with a irish flag pin and the crown from her bio dad as the eldest and her mothers bracelet and the choker of mend that they all have and Maura has the headband and Helene has the crown as does Maura they each have their own specially made crowns
Mcgee looks shocked Kate whats going on
Tim i'm not taking my birthright none of us are there all dead or in jail with life threatening harm
Torres us what do you mean by us and what the hell is your birthright
Kate smirks and leans against the tree conjuring all of her patience
I'm the eldest of three Helene Ruyanon Tenured professor at bcu in our homestate and Maura Isles the chief medical examiner of the commonwealth of massachusetts and i'm an Isles not a Todd i didn't want our name to push me ahead i wanted to work for it as did Helene. Maura the youngest and the youngest student in med school top of her class but I'm actually not an Isles weather me and my sisters are adopted. She waves her hand and her normal curls form and her hair slightly lightens while keeping its natural shade. She smirks at the confused looks on their faces and glances over to Gibbs who notices the look in her eyes and backs the team up
Let me show you boys my birthright follows me. They nod dumly and Kate's smirk turns into a smile and she pushes off the tree abruptly grabs their hands turns them into the tree she grabs the gem that the three of them have time to tell you what happened yesterday Jane and Maura reconciled after an accented after our dad's death in the wherehouse swipe he would have shot her but then he wouldn't have anyone to protect his youngest and the princess of the family Maura our mother always had thought we were dead but now with what's happened she knows we aren't but it was for the best with Paddys enemies after us at the time now that's all ended
Wait a minute Paddy Doyle head of the most feared Irish mob in Boston found someone to have kids with can I see something Kate
Kate smirks always Tim don't worry I can change back so he won't know what do you want
Your finger for a print running through the database
You don't believe I'm his eldest abbs has the DNA to prove it and the tunnel of hope in sariavjo
Yes I do Kate and it's true but it's still you none of you are like him
No if anything Maura's like our mom Kate says as the gem shifts her back to her outfit and lands in her hand to be placed back in and she smiles at Gibbs getting back to work he comes up to her just as Tony's arriving to whisper proud of you Katie Tony will know in due time. Kate smiles and nods at his ghost and Gibbs smirks go crazy Kate just make it subtle Doyle
Father daughter share mirror smirks and Kate works away as Tony comes to her side
I told you you'd pay for yesterday well my friend was injured and nows that time I have a little friend she nods at the ghost of her father and he begins the day of crazy and in the end he leaves with one prank with his eldest and this message keep up the good work and help protect your sisters love you my girl she smirks as she sets the last prank up before activating it with the family powers.
A few weeks later after the crazy baker case and Maura didn't want to abandon Jane so they trained together but this time kate had decided to train by rearranging her desk on her break when Jack and Grace walked back downstairs after their appointment and Jack smiles at her keep it up Kate each of you are using your powers for what's needed
It took a few months but the team took it well and they were all more accommodating to her power surges and that leads us to now with her and helene soundly sleeping and or medatanting from the strength of knowing that her sister is safe and with Jane
Gibbs is next to her and says tony needs to know and she smiles in agreement the mind message me and jack should get going if want to meet her. A year after the case they have all moved to be closer to Maura.Kate settles down with her sisters and they each think back to that let those letters that they got one from their mom one from their dad. So as happy for your wedding as I am and I am , I can't wait for the wedding and don't worry Tony won’t know I promise you.
She smiles and nods.
6 months later at the wedding in which both of their mothers and their dad and the whole of the homicide division and crime lab as well as one of Jane's informants the entirety of the rizzoli clan minus frank and almost the whole of the ncis crew and Helene and Cailin and Jill, Cindy and Claire along with Lindsay and Serena and with Abbie. This was the party
Susie was her maid of honor then Isla and Lilly with her sisters along with Cailin as bridesmaids and Jane’s best person is Vince with Barry and her sisters are up alongside the happy couple with the crowd smiling and Angela, Constance and Author along with Hope are crying happy tears. As the event draws to a close they head off on their pre approved month long leave in Paris and promises to help each other train well the others do what they can in the states
A month later they return home Kate to her ever present job with happiness and more pictures to put on her desk as she feels comfortable with the pictures being out because her family knows and that's what matters to her. So this is the order of photos her with her sisters, her mother and the triplets with Constance and Author, and her with the wedding party and the crews as well , Cindy, Jill, Clarie with the wedding party, and a rizzoli family photo as well and of course the solo photos with jane and her sisters and her own as well. The team filters in as Kate finishes up with her family magic in placing the photos on her desk the team that was at the wedding smiles at Kate’s clear happiness for her youngest sister minus Tony she spends that morning training and talking with Jack then she heads back down to make true on the promise to her sister of sketching the wedding party using the wedding family photos as a reference point. She happily sketches away when she answers the call from Linsday who she almost instantly sparked up a kinship with.
Hey Kate
Hey Lins what's up i'm working on the thing i promised Maura
Good good see you in town when your done
Always
She smiles as she ends the call and gets into sketching the family around the wedding party and while she finishes up with Cailin Tony walks up to the desks after his lunch break.
Whats up Katie what are you doing
Sketching and making true on a promise and i have to add color
Abby smiles at the paper and says looking good Katie and I can't wait to see the finished product. It's looking just as good as that day.

by Emily Washburn | An appellate judge in Montana blocked the state’s law preventing minors from undergoing transgender medical interventions, marking the latest salvo in a national battle over whether children should be allowed to medically “change” their gender. Often, this issue is presented as being about trans-ideology and ensuring people who identify as transgender are treated equally under the law. Consider the following examples from…

all of my enemies started out friends
Emily Washburn is Batman. Batman is Emily Washburn? The identities blur, the way they always do. Sometimes, within all the shades of grey, things have a way of standing out.
• characters: Emily Washburn, Bea Bennett (Bea/Emily) • additional tags: Bea Bennett is Catwoman, Secret Identity • word count: 1242 • read this on ao3
The sun rises on Gotham the same way it always does—rendering further description unnecessary.
It doesn’t always feel good, that little shudder of warmth declaring Batman’s shift over, but at the very least, this morning in particular, it feels right.
It’s been a long fucking night, and if Emily isn’t home soon, Dennis will miss the bus.
There’s a different feeling lingering, too, though, as she starts making her return to the suburbs—like there’s something she’s forgetting.
She throws the batmobile’s autopilot on, and looks over the skyline, tries to ignore the illusion of fire. Nothing, nothing, nothing—there.
It’s hard to describe what exactly, aside from practice, tells her the building’s been broken into, let alone what tells her it’s Catwoman’s doing. But it has been, and it is.
Batman can’t look into this mysterious reappearance during the day, though, so Emily Washburn will have to find an excuse.
.
Ryan—her second husband—Batman had been his idea. Sort of. She’d had to piece it together, after he died—all the time spent in the office of the mansion he’d bought like it was the latest printer, all the restoration projects, all the late hours working at her father’s company, at the job the shareholders didn’t think Emily’s community college degree was good enough for.
Ryan hadn’t wanted to be a superhero. He hadn’t wanted to be a stepdad, or a husband, either. He’d wanted to fuck around with expensive, military grade race-cars.
Emily had been willing to settle for a quiet divorce, for some shares in the company and a broken heart. Annelise had other plans, and so was born Two Face.
Dennis had been drawing these silly made up pictures, all the way up until the funeral, of a guy he called Batman with a car he called the Batmobile, and while the notes she’d found upon finally discovering the entrance to the bootlegger’s cave underneath the house denoted no such names, even community college teaches you to add two and two together.
It takes a while to remove the association of your ex husband’s fraud from the secret bunker buried underneath the house he bought as a status symbol. Tonight, for once, Emily doesn’t feel that sick sense of dread as she pulls the car in. Just exhaustion.
“Long night,” her mother comments, from her seat by the computer Ryan’s life insurance had eventually purchased.
“You could’ve gone to sleep, mom,” Emily tells her as she removes her cowl and starts in on the armored suit.
“Wouldn’t have done much good,” her mother says, ever dismissive of Emily’s second life. “You’re never going to fix everything, you know.”
“Catwoman is back,” Emily says, opting to ignore her mother’s disapproval. “Sooner than I expected. Might take the day off to look into it.”
“Better decide sooner rather than later,” her mom tells her. “You’re running late.”
She is, by at least fifteen minutes, so Em kisses her mom on the cheek and heads upstairs to wake up Dennis.
.
She decides to go to work, after all—not that she’d be missed. Her third husband, James, they’d let him play at CEO, too, but by the time Annelise got to him as well, Emily had all but given up on reclaiming the family legacy.
She has her own office, the head of some department or other largely staffed by women, that handles some sort of internal affairs or communications. They don’t ask her to do much, and the few times she’s asked, they haven’t been reticent to letting her.
She thinks she might come across as some sort of delicately addled relic of a woman, the kind who might start seeing faces in the wallpaper should too much be put on her plate.
It hurts. But it’s useful.
The office rumour mill isn’t spinning hard enough for her tastes today, so when the woman that usually sends spreadsheets her way—her name is Jane, but Emily usually opts for Jan or Jen—politely invites her out for drinks after work, Em decides to pretend it’s sincere.
“I’ll just phone my mother and let her know,” she tells Jane, who’s having trouble schooling her deer-in-the-headlights expression.
“You know, I can’t remember the last time I went out with friends,” Emily tacks on cheerfully, so Jane can at least feel good about herself when she tells the other ladies her pity invite got accepted.
The bar Jane’s ladies go to is—well, seedier than expected isn’t quite the way to put it. It’s the sort of place that attracts locals and regulars more than it does girls’ nights, and Emily has a feeling they’ve gone here to keep her from accepting another invitation.
It’s no matter—this is the perfect place for the intel she needs. Step one is simple—offering to buy a round.
The bartender is young—so are you, Emily reminds herself—and beautiful, an objective fact based on the way she captivates the regulars seated at the bar.
“What can I get for you, hon?” she asks.
“Long Island iced teas for the table,” Em says, nodding her head towards Jane and them. “I’ll settle for a watered down Coke.”
“Designated driver?” the woman asks. “Soda’s free if you say yes.”
“Sure,” Emily tells her with a laugh. “Truth be told, this isn’t how I usually spend my Friday nights.”
“Oh?” the bartender snarks. “You’re tellin’ me you don’t just crave the taste of water and Coke?”
Something about the way she smirks as she makes the jibe sends Emily’s thoughts careening towards images of a skintight suit. It’s an unwelcome distraction, but it does remind her why she’s out tonight.
“I’m much more of a stay-in and catastrophize kind of gal,” she confesses, leaning in towards the bartender on the off-chance her banter’s more than performative. “You hear about that break-in downtown last night? Why, I should be in bed trembling over it right now.”
“Yeah?” the bartender asks, in flirting territory now for sure, even if she wasn’t before. “You got a lot worth stealing, Miss…?”
“Emily Washburn,” Em tells her, not letting it escape her notice that she’s only been asked her name after being made for a mark. “Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Bea.”
It’s not like it’s a secret. A few regulars have referred to her by name in the time Emily’s spent in the bar. But the dull, hysteria-ridden husk of a person people assume Emily Washburn to be would never have picked up on it.
She tells herself it’s a test, to see if the spark in Bea’s eyes is just ever-present, or if there actually is an inside joke hiding behind her smile.
The truth is, Emily wants this woman to know she’s more than meets the eye. Wants her to think about looking closer. Wants tonight to be more than coincidence.
“Well, not to worry, Emily,” Bea says. “I bet you keep your priceless artifacts locked up nice and tight.”
“Oh, for sure,” Em replies. “The Bat himself couldn’t get into my basement.”
“You know,” Bea tells her as she finishes up the last drink. “I heard a rumour about the Bat.”
“Oh, yeah?”
“Heard he was into cats.”
.
“Took you a while,” Jane comments when Emily finally returns to their table, not quite a complaint, but more obligatory than actual concern.
“Oh, you know,” Em says with a shrug. “Wasn’t sure what I wanted at first.”
