The UK's National Archives outlines varying Packards

As we have noted on this blog before, the Packard family is firmly established in England. The 24 results on the UK National Archives website shows the roots of such Packards undeniably. They are organized here by century, to help with navigability

14th century

"Gilbert Kelatoun of Chassefeld [Charsfield and]...John Gardiner of Cretyngham [Cretingham to] Robert Packard of Bourgh [Burgh] (1) to (2), all his lands and tenements in towns of Chassefeld and Hoo; to hold of chief lords of fee for accustomed services. Warranty clause. Witnesses: William Crispyng', Henry Brygge, Arnald dil Medewee, Gilbert Palmere, John Burrich and others. Given at Chassefeld, Tuesday after feast of St Edmund the King, 41 Edw. III" on 23 Nov 1367

"Sale by Edmund, rector of the church of Peltyngdon, Adam Waryn of Colchester, John de Ocham, priest, and John Packarde of Colchester, to Richard Packard of Colchester and Margaret his wife, of a messuage, land and rent in Peltyngdon: [Essex.]" in 1369 (using this site to help with dating)

"Grant by Richard Armeiard of Otley [Suffolk], to John Armeiard of Otley his son, John Packard of Woodbridge [Suffolk], clerk, John Morys, and John Gosseuold of Otley son of John Gosseuold senior, and their heirs and assigns, of the lands and tenements called 'Prattes' in Otley and Clopton [Suffolk], which with other lands in Otley, Clopton, Cretingham [Suffolk], and elsewhere in Suffolk were granted to Richard by charter of the above John Morys, James Wodeward, William Louth, the above John Gosseuold, and Robert Broke. Richard also appoints Thomas Godewyn of Otley, and Thomas Armeiard of the same, his attorneys to deliver seisin. Dated at Clopton, with seal attached. 16th century

In 23 May 1539 are listed include "Thomas Packard of Earl Stonham...[and] Richard Packarde"

A 1550/51 grant lists a "Thomas Packard" and "Geoffrey Packerd."

On a Feb 1, 1577 grant is listed "Thomas Packarde, late of Stonham, yeoman" not surprisingly.

Oggi vorrei presentarvi un volume decisamente interessante, ottimo punto di riferimento per ulteriori approfondimenti, con numerosi spunti e citazioni bibliografiche, sia per quanto riguarda la storia del circo, sia romanzi e poesie a tema e ambientazione circense in senso lato, comprendendo anche il mondo delle fiere, dei saltimbanchi, dei side show… "Gente del circo - Bestiari e altra umanità", pubblicato da Armando Editore, Roma, nel 1986 (ma tuttora reperibile in commercio, nuovo o usato) a cura dell'antropologo Vincenzo Padiglione e impreziosito dalle tavole e illustrazioni del pittore Beppe Madaudo, il tutto inserito nell'elegante progetto grafico e impaginazione di Alfredo Celaia. The Trouble With Harry (Alfred Hitchcock, 1955)

Los que, por razones personales, preferimos Vértigo a las restantes películas de Alfred Hitchcock, estamos a menudo tentados de votar la siguiente en orden de predilección, en mi caso North by Northwest, para no olvidar, omitir o menospreciar un ingrediente consustancial a su cine que tiene, empero, muy escasa presencia en la que puede ser razonablemente considerada su máxima obra maestra. Algo parecido, pero por las razones opuestas, nos remordería si cayésemos en la trampa de ser más originales que sinceros y optásemos por otra posible y plausible favorita, The Trouble With Harry, sin duda la más soleada, divertida, feliz y humorística de sus obras, que precisamente por su alada ligereza y escaso (o, más exactamente, nulo) dramatismo tiende a subvalorarse miserablemente, de acuerdo con un misterioso e injusto criterio —tanto subconsciente como culturalmente dominante— que hace tomarse más en serio lo trágico (o al menos "serio") que lo cómico, lo grave que lo leve, lo estruendoso que lo tenue, lo enérgico que lo delicado, lo enigmático que lo transparente y hasta lo tenebroso que lo luminoso, por radiante que sea su brillo, en un caso de curiosa ingratitud hacia lo que nos proporciona felicidad y placer.

Y es que The Trouble With Harry es una prodigiosa, asombrosa e inesperada comedia, loca y relajada a la vez, macabra y plácida, lo más próximo a uno de los retos que Hitch acarició con su fantasía —lo relató varias veces en entrevistas— y no llegó a realizar: hacer un film de crímenes y suspense a plena luz del día, sin sombras, con rojas (quizá cromáticamente alegres) gotas de sangre salpicando las flores en medio de una apacible campiña soleada.

Sombras hay muy pocas, salvo las de los árboles, en el hermoso Vermont otoñal de The Trouble With Harry, sin duda el más entusiasta cántico al prodigioso conjunto de colores que en esa estación deslumbra en Nueva Inglaterra que ha dado el cine, y una de las obras, en el fondo, es decir, soterradamente, más profundamente británicas —aunque ninguno de sus personajes lo sea— que rodara el mago del suspense a cualquier lado del Atlántico. Es una película que se atreve a defraudar las ya para entonces bastante consolidadas —o, cuando menos, encarriladas— expectativas del espectador asiduo de Hitchcock, que creía saber perfectamente a qué atenerse cuando penetraba en la oscuridad de un cine para ver una nueva obra del célebre "mago del suspense", confianza con la que contaba Hitch para jugar con él como el gato con el ratón, sumiéndole repentinamente (y sin demorarse en exceso) en la incertidumbre, en el suspense. Recuérdense los arranques de la versión americana de The Man Who Knew Too Much o de North by Northwest. En este caso, más que por lo que les sucede a sus incautos y tranquilos protagonistas usuales, que suelen creer no tener nada que temer e incluso se disponen a pasar unos días de ocio y asueto, es el espectador mismo frente a la propia película el que se va a sentir desorientado, en un terreno imprevisto y esperando (en vano) que pasen cosas que no ocurren, entre otras cosas porque las dramáticas han sucedido todas ya, antes de que la película comience; las que ocurren, y no son pocas, no son nunca las que cabía esperar, sino otras menos dramáticas, nada trágicas y absolutamente imprevisibles.

Ni la protagonista (si es que aquí hay sólo una, ya que las fordianas Mildred Natwick y Mildred Dunnock tienen casi el mismo relieve que la muy juvenil y encantadora Shirley MacLaine) ni los principales personajes/intérpretes masculinos corresponden al patrón clásico hitchcockiano, pues parecen más bien típicos secundarios o incluso meros comparsas (como Royal Dano), por lo que se les toma por uno de ellos hasta caer en la cuenta de que no hay en el reparto actores más prominentes que los siempre oscuros y opacos Edmund Gwenn o John Forsythe, de tan extraña trayectoria cinematográfica ambos. Es esta, por cierto, una reflexión exterior a lo que sucede en la pantalla —como mirar el reloj para ver si da tiempo a que la situación cambie varias veces o queda demasiado cerca el final para tanta peripecia— con la que Hitchcock se permitía juguetear igualmente (haciendo películas algo más largas de lo normal, y "matando" a Janet Leigh o a Kim Novak, las "estrellas" respectivas de Psycho y Vertigo, cuando nadie podía preverlo).

Esto prueba lo mucho que de juego de inteligencia con el espectador tenía el cine para Hitchcock, consciente siempre de que una película era un pedazo de cine, no un pedazo de vida ni de realidad, y de que el público, en el fondo, no ignora ni olvida por completo esa circunstancia decisiva, entre otras cosas porque elegir qué película se va a ver implica una elección voluntaria y consciente, detalle que han olvidado otros cineastas, sobre todo los que confunden realidad y ficción, y muchos comentaristas con ínfulas de psicoanalistas, predicadores o sociólogos.

Según todos los testimonios, Hitchcock tenía un particular empeño en hacer esta película desde que cayó en sus manos la novela de Jack Trevor Story. El proyecto, de pocas perspectivas comerciales, no hacía feliz a la Paramount, pero —satisfecha con su trabajo—, le dejó seguir adelante, ya que llevaba varios años acariciando su realización. En realidad, se trataba de una idea narrativamente muy arriesgada, ya que todo discurre como por casualidad y guiado por el azar más caprichoso, jugando con la repetición y la contradicción, de un modo que no deja de evocar el teatro del absurdo. Es, si se quiere, una de las películas más lentas y relajadas jamás rodadas y estrenadas comercialmente, sobre todo para tratarse de una producción norteamericana relativamente cara de 1954. Ni Jean Renoir y John Ford en sus películas más "privadas" llegaron nunca a tales extremos. No recuerdo nada tan descosido, en lo que tantas escenas acaben con un rápido fundido en negro y den paso brusca pero sosegadamente a la siguiente, sin que exista la menor relación de causalidad o la mínima funcionalidad dramática en su sucesión, que incluso, dada la frecuencia de las repeticiones —casi se pierde la cuenta de cuántas personas y cuántas veces se tropiezan con el cadáver de Harry Worp, de cuántas veces es enterrado y desenterrado—, podrían, en algún caso, haberse cambiado de orden, aunque todo está filmado y montado con una seguridad y una precisión que parece descartar toda duda o vacilación. Hitchcock era, sin duda, perfectamente consciente de lo que quería conseguir, sabía el riesgo y el reto que suponía dedicarse a bromear acerca de un cadáver que todo el mundo descubre y de cuya muerte (que le es indiferente por completo) se cree vagamente culpable, y parece evidente que tenía muy claro lo que tenía que hacer para salir airoso y satisfecho de la empresa.

Todos los personajes que aparecen vivos en la película —desde el niño Arnie hasta el viejo capitán Albert Wiles— están simpática e inofensivamente locos, con ideas propias y privadas acerca del mundo, el tiempo, el amor, la existencia, y constituyen según avanza la proyección una banda de pacíficos excéntricos perezosos, sin prisas ni ambiciones, apartados del mundanal ruido en un plácido rincón que tiene más de suave naturaleza "civilizada", de inmenso jardín descuidado, que de pueblo. Estos seres inocentes, deliciosamente chiflados, dotados de tan gran sentido del humor como desprovistos de ambición, y por ello sin noción alguna de competitividad, acaban por formar una pintoresca comunidad de libre asociación temporal, algo así como unos hippies antes de tiempo y sin pretensión alguna, pero curiosamente responsables y morales. Quizá era esa la idea del paraíso en la tierra de Hitchcock, como pudieran serlo para Ford la Irlanda onírica de The Quiet Man o los siempre quiméricos Mares del Sur de Donovan's Reef, o para Renoir el mítico mediodía rural de Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe o el mundillo del espectáculo descrito en French Cancan o la "Belle Époque" de Elena et les hommes. Sin duda, también Bernard Herrmann se sintió feliz de poder componer una especie de tranquila Suite impresionista, desprovista por una vez de acordes ominosamente wagnerianos.

Come abbiamo visto nella lezione precedente dopo un quasi totale disinteresse per lo studio del mondo naturale avvenne un’inversione di rotta, nel vero senso della parola. I marinai necessitavano sempre più di dati scientifici dei naturalisti che all’epoca si dedicavano allo studio del mare, ciò perché erano consapevoli delle enormi lacune in questo settore nonostante la sua importanza. Guillaume Rondelet scrisse De piscibus marinis nel 1554 e pertanto può essere considerato come il padre dell’ittiologia. Nel 17° secolo ebbe luogo l’espansione rivoluzionaria delle scienze che coinvolse anche lo studio degli oceani e ciò consentì l’organizzazione di una ricerca scientifica marina che fosse in grado di portare la ricerca su basi più sperimentali.

Lo studio sistematico degli organismi marini ebbe inizio con la classificazione di migliaia di specie animali e vegetali partita con il naturalista svedese Carlo Linneo. Il conte bolognese Ferdinando Marsili nel 1725 pubblicò Histoire physique de la mer, il primo vero e proprio testo di oceanografia che comprendeva addirittura un capitolo interessato alla chimica marina. L’astronomo Edmund Halley compì un viaggio fino alla barriera di ghiaccio dell’Antartide e ivi studiò gli alisei ed il magnetismo terrestre mentre il famoso capitano James Cook nei suoi famosi viaggi attorno al mondo rimase colpito dalla ricchezza biologica delle acque limitrofe alla banchisa antartica. Possiamo quindi convenire che gli scienziati del 18° secolo misero in moto lo studio del mare su basi scientifiche e moderne, liberando questa branca dagli schemi del sapere classico.

Ciò detto, i capisaldi della moderna oceanografia vennero posti nel 1800, basti pensare a Alexander Marcet il quale scoprì il principio della costanza dei rapporti ionici dei maggiori costituenti delle acqua marine. Egli inoltre stabilì che il volume dell’acqua di mare continua a contrarsi con la diminuzione della temperatura fino al completo congelamento, contrariamente a quanto avviene per l’acqua dolce che raggiunge la sua massima densità a 4°C. Come non citare Charles Darwin, il quale durante il suo famoso viaggio sul Beagle dette un importantissimo contributo alla biologia marina classificando i balanidi e spiegando il meccanismo di formazione degli atolli. Nei primi anni dell’Ottocento William Scoresby raccolse nelle acque della Groenlandia delle diatomee la cui presenza nelle acque sembrava avere una qualche relazione con la presenza delle balene. Successivamente Ehrenberg trovò scheletri di diatomee e di radiolari sia in superficie che sul fondo concludendo così che il mare fosse pieno di organismi microscopici. Il botanico inglese Hooker riconobbe non solo le diatomee come piante microscopiche ma anche il loro importante ruolo nella dieta degli animali marini (analogo a quello che le piante terrestri hanno per gli animali terrestri). Per quanto ai suddetti ricercatori vada conferito il merito di aver individuato concetti fondamentali delle scienze marine erri non affrontarono il problema dei rapporti tra organismi ed ambiente fisico.

Il primo ad affrontare su questa base lo studio del mare e dei suoi abitanti è senza dubbio Edward Forbes, che può essere a tutti gli effetti considerato un pioniere della biologia marina. Durante la sua ricerca egli studiò la distribuzione degli organismi nelle acque costiere analizzando le variazioni delle comunità animali e vegetali in rapporto alla profondità. Oltre a ciò, intraprese ricerche di biogeografia marina mettendo in evidenza l’influenza dell’ambiente fisico sulla distribuzione degli esseri viventi. Vi è da dire che i primi naturalisti raccoglieva il materiale utilizzando attrezzature rudimentali e trascurando la necessità di mettere a punto apparecchiature che consentissero raccolte mirate. Si deve al tedesco Johannes Muller il perfezionamento del retino da plancton che diverrà un’indispensabile strumento per il campionamento di microrganismi marini. Nella seconda metà del 19° secolo iniziarono ad essere messe a punto indagini scientifiche riguardanti la pesca, soprattutto in Inghilterra e nei paesi scandinavi.

Reading: After having had to read so many mediocre books in connection with the Civil War and Canada, it is a pleasure to get back for a while to really well-written ones. Smollett’s Travels through France and Italy, Auden’s excellent anthology of Walter de la Mare’s poetry, Saintsbury’s Miscellaneous Essays, a volume I had never seen which I picked up at Blackwell’s in Oxford. Saintsbury at his best, in his middle period... Lionel Trilling cannot understand why I admire Saintsbury.
