Death Rock (1990) is the third volume of the Doomstones campaign and a clear improvement over the previous installments. The first section is more mountain traversal, but it is brief. The chapter really gets going once the players arrive at the monastery, where a ghost gives the group a series of hints via playing cards that lead to the location of the Crystal of Air (sort of), all the while a band of orcs lays siege to the place.
The adventure benefits from a memorable antagonist, a chosen of Tzeentch who has mutated from an orc into a strange bird person. He wants the crystal too, so it his arrival is no accident. Running the siege concurrently with the investigation seems like a thrilling prospect, particularly since retrieving the crystal from its hiding place will give players the means for a decisive victory. In grim fashion, though, plausible outcomes are given for the defeat of the monastery’s defenders, too.
The puzzle is pretty perfect. The cards are found all over the monastery, encouraging exploration. Once they’re all collected, solving the puzzle seems just tricky enough to feel challenging without turning into a slog. And the best part: the solution of the puzzle doesn’t solve the problem — that can only be accomplished with further investigation and conversations with NPCs. That’s a good puzzle!
Tony Ackland did all the interiors himself. I guess that means he did the cover too?
Oh, also, Gotrek and Felix are provided as additional visitors to the monastery, in case the GM thinks the fighting of the siege would overwhelm the players. Its a neat little potential cameo.

The dreaded doomstone is an inexorable species of fiend that gleefully inflicts all manner of curses on its foes. Looking like a 12-foot tall tombstone with a skeletal fossil embedded within it and a single wicked claw, doomstones inhabit dark dungeons, desecrated graveyards and, of course, several layers of the Abyss. Although their usual manner of locomotion is a slow shuffle, they are surprisingly agile in combat, using their claw to propel themselves into the midst of the fray.
Doomstones are patient and durable, more than happy to grind their enemies down inch by inch with necrotic magics. A favoured tactic is to inflict petrification on an entire party using their foul breath attacks... it's best not to think about what they do to the people they immobilise in this way.
Even if you can defeat a doomstone, it may still have the last laugh. The fiend's final act will be to lay a terrible curse upon you, which will afflict you until holy magic cleanses you.

Thanks @bluewren for tagging me!
This is a bit from a Hades fic I’m working on about Hypnos. Funnily enough, I got the idea from a dream I had.
The god of sleep does not dream.
Dreams are for mortals. A way for them to experience a little more life even while their bodies rest. When Nyx spreads her cloak across the skies and Hypnos lays his blankets over the land, their lives continue on in the realm of the mind. Hypnos watches over them from afar, sending them to sleep as exhaustion settles into their bones and drowsiness makes their eyelids grow heavy. This is his duty as Sleep, the brother of Death, to grant them this little death from which they can wake.
He envies their rest, sometimes. That when sleep takes them, most of them awake refreshed. It is so unlike his own experience of sleep—a perpetual weariness that settles around him like a fog, drawing him forever into darkness.
No, Hypnos does not dream. But in those moments between his own waking, when his eyes fall shut and oblivion takes him, his mind wanders to the mortal realm, where he can experience the dreams of those short-lived beings secondhand.
Tonight, he’s observing a milkmaid’s dream. She doesn’t notice the spectral figure floating just outside her perspective as she offers a cup of milk to a young boy. The boy doesn’t see him either. He isn’t real. Dream figments like him have no conscious thoughts of their own, they are merely a projection of the dreamer’s mind onto the formless world of the subconscious.
The milkmaid talks of little things with the boy, mostly nonsense words that would make no sense to the waking ear. But Hypnos is the lord of sleep, and he can discern meaning even amongst the meaninglessness.
“Did you catch the cow in the fields?” the milkmaid asks.
“I couldn’t find her. I think she’s in the trees with the birds.”
“Well, let’s look together, then.”
The cup of milk vanishes and the dream shifts from the warm interior of a home with a hearth to a wide field skirted by tall trees, a blue expanse stretched above them. They take one stride, and the milkmaid and the boy suddenly move from the center of the field to the cover of trees. She shields her eyes against a sourceless brightness as she peers up into the canopy.
Sure enough, the cow lounges lazily betwixt two branches, eating the leaves off the tree. Her legs are tucked under her as though she were lying in the grass.
“Come on down,” the milkmaid calls. “It’s almost milking time!”
The cow moos in response as she ceases her eating. Rather than climbing down the trunk, the cow merely appears beside the milkmaid, who leads her back towards the barn. The walk this time is slow and seems to stretch on forever as the cow, the milkmaid, and the boy loop through an endless swathe of meadow. The barn, meanwhile, remains a distant structure on the horizon.
“Augh, not again!”
Hypnos suddenly jerks awake, torn away from the pleasant dream of the milkmaid and into the present by a familiar voice. He has to remind himself where he is. I am in the House of Hades. I listen to the shades and record their cause of death.
He puts on a bright smile and greets the newcomer with a bubbly, “Welcome to the House of Hades! Where death is our life!” As he finishes this greeting, he blinks in surprised recognition. “Oh? I wasn’t expecting to see you climbing out of the river today.”
Prince Zagreus, son of Hades, grimaces as he shakes the river’s blood from his hands. “I might need to have a word with the house contractor about setting out some towels,” he grouses as the sticky substance dries brown against his gray skin.
Hypnos checks his board and spots Zagreus’ name at the bottom of the list of recently deceased. “Ah, the doomstone gotcha, huh? Have you tried standing still? Maybe then you won’t get hit!”
“Thanks, Hypnos,” Zagreus responds as he scrapes a flake of dried blood off his arm. “I’ll keep that in mind next time.”
“Anything to help!” Hypnos waves the prince onward as the next shade in line steps forward.
if you have something you want to share as well, consider this an open invitation!

The second volume of the Doomstones campaign is Blood in the Darkness (1990). If you liked the first one, you’ll like this one. If not, well, this is basically the same stuff. Traverse some difficult countryside, fight some monsters. There are live orcs in this one, at the shrine that serves as the destination and the repository of the Crystal of Earth. For what it is, it’s pretty OK, it just isn’t what I want.
The lower levels of the shrine are a bit more Tomb of Horrors than I was expecting. There are hints and handouts that kind of clue in players to what kind of traps they might encounter. Those traps, well, the one main trap, is a doozy. I don’t know how I feel about it! On the one hand, it makes sense: it is there to kill intruders and prevent them from getting further into the vault. Most traps in RPGs are not designed so efficiently, and I appreciate that. I also like the way the handouts help the players out, which addresses my concern about the unfairness of Tomb of Horrors. But I dunno, I think this trap is just gonna kill parties no matter what, you know? And that…is not my ideal outcome. Maybe I’m wrong, it could be easier to figure out in play.
Tony Ackland does the bulk of the interior art, and it is good. I am not sure who does the cover because, again, it is not credited.

Welcome to Soe finally does a real devlog on Pink Pro (but first, she talks about something else) + little announcement!
This experience with jams has taught me that, as I am, the perfect deadline is a month and a half. If it's a full two months, I'll end up doing something else because "there's plenty of time", only to find myself doing it all in the second month/last three weeks.
BUT! It's not like I haven't done anything, what do you think?
[Part where I talk about other things]
🍨 In parallel with the development of Pink Pro, I collaborated with GrandPiekron on his This Tomb of Ours (Run and check it out, it's right HERE!).
Tumblr media
It was great to be part of building a game from scratch and seeing it take shape! Maybe in the next few days, I could publish Erin's beta designs. Fun fact: Her sprite creation time was 10% sprite and 90% hair lock. As I already said for Clea and Aurel, the idea of making everyone bald is increasingly tempting.
Tumblr media
At the moment This Tomb of Ours is not yet complete, literally only the ending is missing, but it is on its way. In the meantime, how about take a look at Doomstone, GrandPiekron's other game? It's complete, but I warn you that it's very dark.
🍨 My collaboration with @time-lapse-games continues, this time for a project that you will soon see on your screens.
Here, instead of sprites and busts, I am the main characters spriter and the betatester. When it's published, I'll obviously spam it here too!
Tumblr media
🍨 As mentioned on Halloween, I'm getting help from two great people who can make Three Yellow Quartzes a game in existing English, and that involves discussing adaptations.
Tumblr media
🍨 For the 100+ downloads (Thank you!) of Interview with a succubus, I contacted a Spanish translator to make it available in an additional language. I love Spanish and who knows, maybe one day I might be able to translate things myself! Hopefully in a more existent Spanish than my English.
I will never stop thanking acadizs for his translation and his patience with my requests.
🍨 Given the introduction of an additional language, I put my hands on Ren'py again to do a single build of Interview with a succubus.
I'd like to do other visual novels, maybe a little longer than ten minutes and more elaborate than two ending branches. I was a little sad that I didn't get to participate in the Once Upon a Time VN Jam, but 1. I had no ideas, 2. I wouldn't have had time even by mistake. I'm eyeing the Winter VN Jam but, barring a miracle, I seriously doubt I'll participate.
🍨 I would also like to go back to translating RPGs into Italian and I contacted again an author whose everything I translated except, like, their most important game. Living Playground: The Witch's Puppets, I'll come back to you!
Tumblr media
🍨 I fixed a few things about The Night of the Candy Apple. I plan to make a dedicated devlog about it, once Pink Pro is published.
[/Part where I talk about other things]
Tumblr media
I've been wanting to make "a pink game" for a while now. I love the aesthetic of games like The Huntress of the Hollow, Sweeter Yesterday and Dreaming Mary and I wanted to make something pink too. I also wanted to do something with sweets tilesets (You might have deduced this from the fact that I made a post on sweets tilesets-), so I decided to merge the two! When I decided to join jams, I decided that I would make my pink and sweets game for the Yuri Jam.
I've already written about the characters in their introductions, so what about the game itself? The game itself, in theory, is very simple: dialogues, cooking minigames, ending requirements, period. Then, of course, maps, sprites, CGs, music, sound effects.
So what's the situation like?
Tumblr media
So geometric...
🍰 The maps are complete. They're the first thing I made and the first thing I finished! Obviously, Chocomill and com-sho could not be missing. I am very satisfied with how they turned out! (… Although I definitely need to practice more with exteriors. Maybe one day I'll be able to build a house other than a rectangle or trapezoid.)
Tumblr media
🍰 The sprites are- The sprites for Chantal and Janet are complete. Margrit's would be complete too, if only I could make her tail decently.
As for now, the sprites of the others exist - Except Zora's, who is always the last. Poor Zora. They are not all 8-directions-complete, but it must be said that not all of them need 8-directions sprites-
Tumblr media
🍰 The busts are complete! I still have to do all the expressions, though. If nothing else, they all have an average of 3/4 expressions, only Chantal has like eight.
Tumblr media
🍰 CGs are almost finished! Only one left.
There's one that I'm extremely satisfied with, I hope you'll like it- Um, actually, it doesn't represent a happy scene, so I'm afraid you won't like it much-
Since I started using Clip Studio Paint not that long ago, I still make stupid mistakes that I notice eight hundred years later, possibly after publishing. Above all: smudged shadows, non-blended shadows and color that goes on the lineart. But I assure you that in traditional I know how to color within the lineart! I learned it in kindergarten!
🍰 The sound side is ready.
More importantly, Pink Pro will also have a customized music track! Maybe I'll talk about it more in depth in a future post, but in the meantime: thanks to DogStudio there will be a story section accompanied by a track that they wrote especially for the game! It has a very particular sound, and inspired me for the main musical genre.
I was sure of one thing: I didn't want to play the "jangling" music typical of sweets contexts. I find them cute, but I wanted to do something different. I hope you like the result!
🍰 On a separate note, since @time-lapse-games has been my sound designer for Three Yellow Quartzes and explained to me the whole philosophy behind the choice of sound effects (?), I pay more attention to the sounds and I feel like putting them even where I wouldn't have put them before. For anyone looking for sound effects for Anything, may Taira Komori's website be with you!
Tumblr media
🍰 Venka's Crafting Script works!
… Well, inserting the latest recipes gave me a weird problem where recipes from, like, Number X to Number Y did not appear. I still have no idea why (I thought the numbers were connected to some variables that were also used in the game or other scripts, but that doesn't seem to be the case, so who knows?), but I solved it by simply dubbing the recipes that didn't appear in the number following Y onwards.
🍰 The cutscenes exist. It's a great achievement. The fundamental parts are there, the scenes of four out of five customers and the ending are missing. I hope I don't get stuck as usual-
And so?
Initially, I wanted to post the whole game in Italian, and then translate it as soon as possible - This is because, 100%, I would not be able to finish the game and translate it by the jam deadline. However, the RL has landed like a volleyball in your face as you walk courtside, and in the next few days I won't have as much time to dedicate to it as I would like.
SO! For the jam I will release a demo. If you stop to read the flavor texts and talk to everyone, the gameplay can last about twenty minutes. Seems like a good timing to me!
In this way, I will be able to publish both the Italian and the English versions. Since the game is 80% ready, I plan to get back to it as soon as I have a bit of a break.
And that's all for now!
To the next time! Hopefully with the demo-

“On October 18th, 2013, Wander and Sylvia journeyed to the spooky town of Doomstone, a place where the meanest, nastiest, evil outlaws in the galaxy live, to prevent them from getting caught, Wander has to become a bad guy himself as Disney Channel presents Wander Over Yonder’s The Bad Guy! Happy 10th Anniversary!” - WanderFan200. Looks like Wild Wooly Wander has finally been caught from stealing a bag full of money! And Sylvia is DEFINITELY not liking where this is heading…
