@drfirsnogayny mentioned genderswaped NFB AU the other day and i haven't been able to get that idea out of my mind, so i had to doodle some screencap redraws with the swapped versions of the trio right away!
featuring ms. donaldson losing her mind, mr. wolfe being a bit of a diva, and...uh, jerry (who would 100% be changing his hairstyle all the time and thus would absolutely rock a mullet, argue with the wall).

A Dirt Road Leading Me to Distant Mountains by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While at a roadside pullout along Donaldson Rd with a view looking south and down the dirt road to more distant snowcapped ridges and peaks of the San Bernardino Mountain. The blues of the skies and whites on the mountainside, I felt, helped to create a color contrast to compliment the more earth-tones in the lower portion of the image. After doing some post-production work with control points in DxO PhotoLab 6 and making some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted, I cropped a portion of the foreground to create a wide-angle and panoramic feel to the image.

"So, you were with him for an entire year and you didn't tell anybody?" Her mother asked her over a cup of coffee.
She'd been there for a couple of days already, crying in her childhood bedroom. For days, her mother didn't know why, but she didn't push. She'd tell her when she was ready.
That came three days into her stay. She and her mother sat down at the kitchen table, a mug of coffee and a biscuit in front of them as she recounted the last year of her life. She told her mother about every moment she had spent with Carlos. From the first time she met, the first date they went on, when he asked her to move in and...
The proposal. Because he was going to propose, wasn't he? She had found the ring in his bag at the last Grand Prix they had attended together.
"He's an F1 driver," she said. That bit she had failed to mention to her mother until now. "They threatened him with his seat, mum. If he didn't do this, they would have replaced him mid season." She wiped the tears from her cheeks, pulled out her phone and showed her mother the article about Carlos, her Carlos, and Rebecca Donaldson.
How would this change things? Would Rebecca go to Grand Prix, just like she did? Would she kiss Carlos in front of the cameras, just like she wanted to?
Her mother let out a sigh as she placed the phone back on the table. "Do you want my advice?" She asked, hand her daughter nodded her head. "You love him, that's clear. If this is all for show, go back to him. Date him and love him in secret until you're both ready to be together in the spotlight. You'll have to set some boundaries, sure. But it'll be worth it."
"What about this other girl?" She asked.
"If he loves you, he'll end it before showing you off."
It was terrible advice, but it was the push she needed. "Thank you," she said as she stood up to hug her mother. Her mother patted her and she went running off to her childhood bedroom to pack her things.
Her mother had never had much success with love. She'd been in love once but she had let him get away. She wasn't going to let her daughter make the same mistake.
Before she knew it she was on the road, her mothers house getting smaller and smaller in her rear view mirror. She couldn't wait to get back to Carlos. She couldn't wait to run to him, to kiss him and then to screw his brains out.
She tapped her nails against the steering wheel as she drove, making her way home. Home. She hadn't just missed Carlos, but she had missed their home too. She had missed the sounds of Carlos as he watched the football, the angry string of Spanish words leaving his lips. She had missed Piñón and having him jump on their bed as soon as Carlos brought him back from a walk, waking her up.
It was maybe an hour and a half until she got home. She parked her car out the front, grabbed her keys and let herself in. She hadn't been in contact with Carlos for the days she had been at her mothers house.
"Carlos?" She called as she shut the door behind her. As soon as she did, Piñón came running. He barked as he jumped up at her, his paws on her legs as he tried to lick her face. "I missed you too, buddy," she said and pushed him away.
"Carlos," she called again as she walked through the house.
Somewhere in the house, a door shut. There was loud, thundering footsteps as he rushed towards her. "Cariño," he pretty much gasped when he saw her.
She dropped her bags and ran towards him. As soon as he got to her, Carlos wrapped his arms around her and lifted her up. His hand was on the back of her head as he held her close. His eyes were squeezed shut as he took a minute to just breathe.
She was back and she was in his arms. Piñón barked until Carlos released her. "I missed you so much," he said as he held her waist. "I spoke to Ferrari and I told them all about you. I'm going to do whatever I can to put a stop to this."
She grabbed his face and kissed him slowly. Carlos melted into it, squeezing her waist. She pulled away from him, keeping her arms around him as she played with the hair on the back of his neck. "Are they threatening your seat still?"
Carlos nodded his head. "But I don't care. I can find another seat."
She shook her head and stepped closer to him, until they were chest to chest. "I don't want you to give up your seat for me," she said. "If Ferrari are gonna take away your seat, then play the part they want you to play," she said and kissed him again.
Carlos couldn't help but think of the ring he still had. "But I want to be with you," He said somewhat quietly.
She kissed him once again. "We can set boundaries," she said. "She knows its not real, right?" Carlos nodded his head. "Well, we can have things in place. Like, i know she'll be at Grand Prix, but I don't want her to kiss you."
"Of course, cariño," he said, squeezing his arms around her.
Suddenly, she was no longer playing with the hair at the back of his neck. She moved her hand up and tugged slightly.
Carlos got the idea. His hands moved from her waist to her ass. "How much did you miss me, cariño?"
"So fucking much," she said as she leaned closer to kiss down his neck.
"Show me."
She pulled away and gave him an incredulous look. "Carlos, my love, you're going to show me how much you missed me."
Carlos couldn't argue with that. Gripping her ass he lifted her up, and carried her to their bedroom. She grinned, her forehead against his as Carlos laid her down on the covers.
He kissed her. It was soft and slow and so full of love. As he pulled away she whined, trying to keeping him as close as possible. But Carlos stood tall, looking down at her. "Eres preciosa," he whispered.
As Carlos looked down at her, she pulled off her shirt and tossed it to one side. His breath hitched in his throat as she threw off her bra and leaned back on her hands, her lip pulled between her teeth.
Every time with Carlos was simply amazing. He knew all of her buttons, knew what he had to do to get her screaming.
Getting to his knees, Carlos popped the button on her jeans. He kissed the inside of her thigh as he shuffled them down her legs and dropped them to the floor.
A pornographic moan left her lips when he kissed over her clothed mound. She bucked her hips towards him and Carlos couldn't hide his grin. He did it again to evoke a similar reaction before pulling her underwear away from her legs, dropping them onto the pile of her discarded clothes.
He kissed the inside of her thigh once more and looked up at her. But she wasn't looking at him. Her head was thrown back, chest heaving in anticipation.

Bedtime baby
Content - baths, dummy use, soft toys, bedtime storys.
Summary - angels night time routine with her daddy's.
Authors note - I adore this request!, thank you so much. Sorry it's out so late <3
Tumblr media
Bedtime was never anyone's favourite thing in the world, but Steve and Eddie always made it fun for you.
You had all finished your dinner about an hour and a half ago and they had let you stay up to finish some colouring in. Once you had finished the page you went straight to Steve to show him.
That was your first mistake because now you had to get ready for bed.
Eddie had run a bath for you since you had requested one, anything to make this process take longer.
Once the bath was run Steve helped undress you and lower you into the water, once you were settled Eddie pulled out your bucket of bath crayons and started to draw little pictures on the side of the tub with you.
"Daddy look it's me you and Dada" you pointed out to Steve showing him the stick figures you had drawn around some raspberry bushes. " Oh sweetheart it's amazing" he said giving you a kiss on your head.
You stayed in the water until it started to cool down, Eddie helping you out and Steve wrapping you in a towel. "I'll go get her clothes ready just get her to brush her teeth" Eddie told Steve giving you a kiss on the cheek. "alright sweetheart you heard Dada" he chuckled picking up your toothbrush and wetting the toothpaste. He helped you move some bits of your toothbrush around your mouth knowing there were parts you couldn't reach. After spitting out the toothpaste into the sink and having a sip of water Steve led you into your bedroom.
"Come on angel let's get you in your pajamas" you heard Eddie say as he took your hand and pulled your onesie up your legs. After zipping you up he placed you into your soft sheets pulling them over your body placing the two soft toys they each had gotten you for your birthday beside you. "Comfy darling?" Steve said as he looked over at your relaxed body "ya daddy" you sighed cuddling into the fur of the black bunnys fur.
Eddie had chosen your story for tonight.
"Hairy mclary from Donaldsons dairy" steve started out, "Out of the gate and out for a walk went hairy mclary from Donaldsons dairy" Eddie continued. " and Hercules morse as big as a house with hairy mclary from Donaldsons dairy" Steve showed you the picture of the two dogs one small and one tall.
"Bottemley potts, covered in spots, Hercules morse as big as a horse and hairy mclary from Donaldsons dairy" Eddie exclaimed turning the page.
"Muffin mclay like a bundle of hay, bottemley potts covered in spots, Hercules morse as big as a horse, hairy mclary from Donaldsons dairy."
"Bitzer Maloney all skinny and Boney, Muffin mclay like a bundle of hay, bottemley potts covered in spots, Hercules morse as big as a horse and hairy mclary from Donaldsons dairy."
"Schnitzel von krumm with a very low tum, Bitzer Maloney all skinny and Boney, Muffin mclay like a bundle of hay, bottemley potts covered in spots, Hercules morse as big as a horse and hairy mclary from Donaldsons dairy."
"With tails in the air they trotted down past the shops and the park to the far end of town. They sniffed at the smells and snooped at each door, out of the shadows they saw-"
"SCARFACE CLAW the toughest in town, EEEEEOWWWFFTZ said scarface claw" Eddie exclaimed interupting Steve earning a nudge on the shoulder and an unimpressed look.
"Off with a yowl a wail and a howl, a scatter of paws and a clatter of claws, went Schnitzel von krumm with a very low tum, Bitzer Maloney all skinny and Boney, Muffin mclay like a bundle of hay, bottemley potts covered in spots, Hercules morse as big as a horse and hairy mclary from Donaldsons dairy straight back home to bed."
Looking down at you both of them realised that you had fallen asleep. Eddie getting under the covers and cradling you around your stomach. Steve carefully placing your dummy in your mouth.
Both of them settled down starting to let sleep take them.
"Goodnight sweetheart" "we love you angel."

Top Ten Songs that my Roommates Hate:
If I’m good at anything it's being obnoxious. Here’s ten songs that I love, but drive my roommates up the wall.  Ranked from their most to least tolerable.
10.  “Bangs”- They Might be Giants
Starting off very tame, “Bangs” has the signature TMBG geeky sound and whiny vocals. The song conjures imagery of pocket protectors and protractors. With lyrics like "royal flyness" and talk of concordant angles, “Bangs” is likely a big hit in the math department. Hey at least they've got taste.
9.  “Billy Don't Be a Hero”- Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods
What's better than mass manufactured 70s bubblegum pop hit about the Civil War? A cover of the Paper Lace ‘classic’, “Billy Don't Be a Hero” tells a story of a soldier killed in combat, in the most catchy, kitschy way possible. It’s a very addictive song, so please listen responsibly.
8.  “Xanadu”- Rush
“Xanadu” by Rush is not to be confused with the 1980 Olivia Newton John film of the same name, though both are pretty polarizing. The only critique I can offer is that at only 11 minutes, “Xanadu” is entirely too short. Who wouldn't want to " To stand within the pleasure dome, decreed by Kubla Khan” with Geddy Lee. Sounds pretty cool if you ask me.
7. “Motorcycle Mama”- Harpo
Everyone knows that a truly great musician is defined by their references to other, better musicians. Unlike the other songs on this list ( with the exception of Gaucho) this is a bad song, but it's a blast. Harpo’s so caught up in trying to string Ravi Shankar and Fritz the Cat together that he entirely forgets to pay any attention to the rest of the song.
6.  “Be True to Your School”- The Beach Boys
Clearly, my roommates are lacking some serious school spirit. Just wait until some loud braggart tries to put them down. They won't know what hit them.
5. “Your Auntie Grizelda”- The Monkees
I'm a big fan of the Monkees, but even I have to admit that “Your Auntie Grizelda" is an annoying song. There is a definite reason Peter Tork wasn't placed on vocals, but I think there's a certain charm to having a singer who can't really sing.
4. “Schlock Rod Pt. 2”- Jan and Dean
“Schlock Rod Pt. 2” is nothing if not unique, it's an obnoxious conversation between two men, complete with constant voice cracks. Set to a tune consisting of clanging metal and sputtering car engines, it's satire, and I’ll defend it till the end. Think this one is annoying? Check out part one.
3. “Gaucho”- Steely Dan
I apologize in advance to all the Dan Fans out there, but damn this song sucks. Listening to “Gaucho” is like being transported to your grandpa’s pontoon in the 80s, and when a song mentions ponchos more than once, there’s a fundamental issue lyrically.
2. “Sally MacLennane”- The Pogues
The best way to listen to any Pogues song is at an ear-splitting volume, though the people I live with might disagree. If you have too many friends, this will either take care of it (especially if you listen at strange hours of the morning) or you’ll meet the best people you’ll ever know. Rest in peace, Shane MacGowan, you are a legend and a genius.
1. “Strap on That Jammy Pac”- Ween
Recorded on a four-track cassette while both Dean and Gene Ween were supposedly huffing Scotchgard (they probably weren’t) and had mono (they probably did); “Strap on That Jammy Pac” is the first track off of The Pod, which is easily one of the best albums of all time. Shout out to Ween for this much needed addition to blues-country history.

(Context: @moonleet’s AN on this fic of his)
[W]hat was ur childhood favorite when it comes to "classic" literature?
I don’t actually remember many of the “classic” books I read as a kid (literally just Wind in the Willows and Black Beauty), so deviating slightly from the original prompt, I’m making a list of books for headspace. It’s based on either what I remember liking (or am told I liked) at various ages or what I’ve found I like in headspace currently.
~2-4yo: Headspace discoveries or parental hearsay (often too young to remember)
Basically any of the Winnie the Pooh stories (A.A. Milne). I’m told I wasn’t hugely into them as a kid but that changes in headspace.
The Velveteen Rabbit (Margery Williams). Don’t think I was read this as a kid but with how much I go on about Norrell, is me having latched onto this in headspace a surprise? (no).
The Gruffalo (Julia Donaldson). Haven’t verified this one, but I’m told I absolutely adored it as a kid.
The Frog & Toad series (Arnold Lobel). Haven’t verified, but I do actually remember this one so that’s a good sign.
~5-7yo: I can actually remember my likes now (no headspace discoveries currently).
The Junie B. Jones series (Barbara Park). Haven’t verified this, but I remember loving these.
The Series of Unfortunate Events series (Lemony Snicket). Same thing as Junie B. Jones
Swindle (Gordon Korman). Haven’t verified this but I enjoyed reading it a second time back in like 7th grade after loving it the first time in 2nd grade so it’s at least more likely than the first two. (Also I found out this is a series looking up the author’s name so uh. The headspace reading list begins, I guess)
Any regressed headspace:
The Magic Treehouse series (Mary Pope Osborne). This was the first series I definitely remember reading as a kid, and my folks say they used them as bedtime stories before that.
Wind in the Willows (Kenneth Grahame) probably. I read it when I was in like 8th grade but I remember thinking the length was the main reason it was marked as an upper-grade book (the thing’s like 300 pages iirc).
Any of Shel Silverstein’s children’s-lit poetry. I think I found it when I was like 6 but it could’ve been introduced earlier; in any case it feels like I’d enjoy it even in younger headspaces.

REQUEST
@ancis93 - Hey, I see you're accepting 'Full House' character requests. It really annoys me that everyone only writes about Jessi (nothing against him, he's a great uncle) but nothing about Danny, he's a great dad isn't he? I would like to have a request for him where he has another daughter (older than DJ) who is being bullied at school and she gradually starts to distance herself from her sisters, uncles and even her father and Danny decides to confront her one day, find out what's going on and help her... Something cute if possible🧡🧡🧡
'And make sure to grab some towels DJ,' Danny said as he finished stuffing the rest of Michelle and Stephanie's swimsuits into the bag.
'Sure Dad,' DJ said as she disappeared up the back stairs towards the linen closet.
'Are you excited to go to the pool, Michelle?' Danny asked his youngest child who was sitting at the table next to her sister shovelling cheerios into her mouth.
'Super excited!' Michelle said excitedly, 'Denise said her family are gonna be there too today.'
'Well, that's good you can play in the kiddie pool,' Stephanie said.
'We're going in the big pool!' Michelle protested.
'Nuh huh,' Stephanie replied.
'Uh huh!' Michelle rebutted.
'Girls,' Danny sighed, 'stop arguing or neither of you will be going anywhere.'
The girls looked at one another, narrowing their eyes as they scowled at one another before proceeding to carry on stuffing cheerios into their mouths. Danny shook his head and turned away. As he turned to start packing their lunches into a bag DJ came back downstairs towels in hand. She slid onto a stool by the kitchen island, handing the towels over to her father.
'Thanks Deej,' Danny said as he placed them inside, 'wait, you missed one. There's only four here.'
'I know,' DJ said, 'Kelly's not coming.'
'What?' Danny said.
'I told her to get a move on but she said she's not coming,' DJ shrugged.
'Oh she did, did she?' Danny asked.
'What does it matter anyway?' DJ asked, 'we can still go. She'll only be a total buzz kill if she does come.'
'Yeah,' Michelle said, 'last time we went to the park she wouldn't even push me on the swing. Joey had to do it.'
'Well at least Joey helped you,' Stephanie said, their argument seemingly forgotten.
'Yeah but then I had to push him and he's heavy,' Michelle said, scrunching up her nose.
At that moment Joey and Jesse burst into the room. Jesse was wearing his jeans and trusty leather jacket, a simple t-shirt underneath. The only giveaway he would even be near any water was the towel tucked underneath his arm. Joey however was completely the opposite. He was wearing board shorts and a Hawaiian shirt. He had his body board under his arm and a towel wrapped around his neck.
'Right, who's ready for a day at the pool?' Jesse asked.
'We are!' Michelle and Stephanie chimed.
'Deej?' Joey asked.
'As ever,' DJ smiled.
'Where's Kel?' Jesse asked, looking around for his eldest niece.
'She's not coming,' Michelle shrugged.
'What?' Jesse said going to scoop Michelle off of her chair and place her on his hip, 'how come?
'I don't know,' Danny said. Worry griped at his stomach for a moment. He thought of his eldest daughter. He had noticed a change in her, She wasn't naughty or getting in trouble. She didn't fight with her sisters, hell, she didn't do much of anything anymore. She went to school, did her homework and was always polite. But she wasn't herself.
'Well she can't miss out on family fun day,' Joey said, 'right girls?'
'Yeah, why don't we go and see if we can talk her around?' Jesse said.
'No,' Danny said, 'guys how about you head to the pool with the girls and me and Kel will join you later?'
'Are you sure?' Joey asked.
'Yeah,' Danny said, handing his bags to the blonde-haired man. The gang started to gather their things and head to the front door leaving Danny standing in the kitchen alone.
He sighed and headed up the back stairs. When he got to DJ and Kelly's room he found the door closed and the soft thud of music echoing from underneath. He knocked and waited for a moment but when no response came from the other side he knocked again and then pushed the door open quietly.
Kelly was sitting on her bed, cross-legged, skimming through a magazine though she looked up when he entered.
'Hey Kel,' he said, coming into the room.
'Hi dad,' she said meekly.
'Are you ready for the pool? Looks like it's a great day for it,' he said softly as he moved into the room and perched on the end of her bed.
'Actually Dad,' she said, dropping her gaze to her magazine, 'I don't really feel like it.'
'But you love the pool,' Danny said, 'and we always have a good time.'
'I guess but I just don't feel like it,' she said.
'You don't feel like much these days huh? I know the girls said-' Danny started though it was cut off.
'Well we're not joined at the hip you know,' Kelly snapped. She threw the magazine down on the floor and folded her arms across her chest. Danny sighed.
'No,' Danny said, reaching out to put a reassuring hand on her knee, 'but I know my girls. And I know that if you won't even be friends with them, something is definitely up.' Kelly said nothing but she didn't meet his gaze either. He stroked her knee with the pad of his thumb trying to coax whatever was bothering her to the surface. But it didn't come. Instead, Danny watched as his oldest child started to shed tears that dropped from her eyes and down onto her jeans as she had bowed her head. He shuffled forward and pulled her into him as he mumbled, 'oh sweetheart.'
Kelly allowed herself to be pulled into her father's side. She let him hug her until her breath became shaky and the shoulder of Danny's shirt became damp and snotty. His heart felt heavy as he held her but he waited until the crying had subsided enough to pull away and look into his daughter's young face.
'Sweetheart, what's wrong?' he asked, using his thumb pad to wipe tears from her face.
'I can't tell you,' she replied.
'Hey now,' he chastised, 'you can tell me anything you know that.'
'Not this,' she sniffled, 'you won't understand.'
'Well I won't understand if you never tell me now will I?' he reasoned. Kelly just shook her head and scrunched her eyes closed as if he would be able to tell what she was thinking, 'you won't understand because...because you're not a girl.'
'Oh,' Danny said sadly.
The two fell silent for a moment. Thoughts swirled around Danny's mind and he tried to figure out what it could be. Girls' problems. That sounded like a hint but knowing how complex teenage girls could be it could have been a world of things. Finally, he spoke, 'does it have anything to do with why you don't want to go to the pool today?'
Kelly nodded.
'Is it wearing a swimsuit?' he asked. Kelly shook her head.
'Is it...boy related?' he said. Kelly shook her head once more. Danny tried to hide how big his sigh of relief was. His mind blanked. He was two questions in and he was at a loss. Thankfully, Kelly seemed to notice he was lacking, 'it's because...'
Danny held on. He didn't want to spook her. Didn't want her to retract back into herself as she had been doing.
'It's because I'm on my period,' she said eventually.
'Oh,' he said before brightening, 'well that's okay.'
'No, it's not. It's horrible.'
'Well, I know the first time is a little-'
'It's not the first time,' she said quietly.
'It's not?' Danny said, trying to think back over the past few months. Had it been happening under his nose and he never noticed? Did his daughter feel that he couldn't tell him everything?
'No, it happened last month in gym class. Everyone saw it was so embarrassing,' she said, wincing a little at the memory, 'the teacher sent me back to the locker room and...'
'It's okay,' Danny said, 'you can tell me.'
'And I spotted one of the other girls had ...you know...stuff in her bag. So I stole it out of her school bag,' she admitted.
'Oh honey,' Danny said. She was still leaning against him and he allowed his hand to come behind her and stroke her hair gently.
'They caught me,' she said, 'I tried to pretend I hadn't but they were really mean about it....they told me to stop being so pathetic and just ask my mom.'
There it was. The words Danny hated hearing the most. She needed her mom.
He knew it wasn't anyone's fault. He knew Pam would be here, walking him through everything if she hadn't been taken cruelly early. He knew that he, Joey and Jesse made the best of their situation. They were enough for the girls. But they couldn't be everything. They didn't know about girl stuff. Sometimes you just need your mom.
'I guess there's some things me and the guys can't help you with huh?' he asked. Kelly nodded sadly.
'I mean they'd already bagged on me for not having a bra yet,' she said, 'I made Sarah give me one of hers so they'd shut up. But they just don't.'
'Well, maybe we can change that,' Danny said.
'How?' Kelly asked, hope evident in her quiet voice.
'Well first of all we can go and get you everything you need for...well you know,' he said suddenly embarrassed, 'and then maybe I can ask Becky if she would take you bra shopping? I mean I'm happy to take you but she might have a little more idea than I do in that department...'
Kelly nodded. Danny smiled, 'And then if you want I can speak to your teacher? About the girls.'
'No!' Kelly said all too quickly making Danny's smile fade a little, 'I mean I'm sure they'll give up now.'
'But if they don't you'll tell me right?' Danny said. Kelly looked up and nodded, 'Me or Joey, or Jesse, or Becky. Whatever it is, however embarrassing you...or me might find it you gotta tell us. Because I hate to think of you up here all on your own worrying about things that shouldn't be worth a second thought.'
'Okay,' Kelly said.
'Okay,' Danny said, 'now how about we go to the pool?'
'Dad I can't. Even I know I can't swim like this,' she said, gesturing vaguely at herself.
'I know,' Dany said, 'but we can still spend the day at the pool. Me and you can relax by the side. How about that?'
'Sounds good,' she said, 'but I don't like that we're not going to be able to get Jesse's hair wet.'
'Oh I'm sure we can devise some way of dunking him,' Danny chuckled.
Kelly cuddled into his side one more time and then pulled away. Standing up to start collecting some belongings she could take with her to the pool. Danny watched her for a moment and then stood up, leaving her to it.  As he left the room his heart got a little heavier.
Having a full house was never easy.
But he always tried his best.

Look Dundee may be run down a bit in places (and the pandemic definitely did a number on the physical shops) but even when I was a kid I was convinced that parts of the city were peak late Victorian/Edwardian #aesthetic.
Loads of people seem to only visit to go to the V&A and the Discovery but the McManus gallery is also magnificent. The Verdant Works is interesting as are all the old jute and linen mills that are now turned over to housing, and I've always thought the brownstone tenements looked warm and homely even if many of them are rather battered now. The Caird Hall and Reform Street are impressive from an architectural perspective, even if the paint's peeling and many of the shops are empty (I've been to shows at the Caird Hall and the Dundee Rep for considerably less money than it would have cost in Edinburgh so that's also cool). The city's whaling and textile heritage is fascinating (though not always nice, but that's just British history everywhere) and it's also got a lot of women's history (jute mills meant a lot of the Victorian and early twentieth century workforce was female).
You're never far from the water or the countryside (ice cream in Broughty Ferry or Arbroath smokies anyone?) and of course the surrounding Angus and Perthshire countryside used to provide loads of berries for the jam and marmalade that once made Dundee famous (and it's still a perfect area to grow fruit today). Alternatively you could take a walk in Baxter Park when it's autumn and the leaves are falling.
And personally as a graveyard geek I think the Howff is a lovely place to sit, all the more so because you can look up and admire the D.C. Thomson headquarters, housed in an elegant early skyscraper from 1902. Maybe while eating a bridie or an empire biscuit or a pineapple tart from a stereotypical Scottish bakery (Fisher & Donaldson, Goodfellow & Steven, and many many more).
And I'm reminded of this again today (hence the rant) because I was in J.A. Braithwaite Ltd to buy tea and, though it's only a small shop, currently tucked away under some scaffolding on Castle Street, it's just such a wonderful blast from the past (been running for over 150 years and the interior doesn't seem to have changed much). It's like an Aladdin's cave of coffee and tea, and if you are ever in Dundee you should go, even though it's a bit hidden, because why not fully commit to the late Victorian aesthetic (though perhaps not the mores) for ten minutes. Anyway google images doesn't have very many great photos but:

And it smells FANTASTIC

Everytime "cardigan" by taylor swift autoplays on youtube music, i can't help but think of jeremy donaldson & jenny hartley.
"When I felt like I was an old cardigan, under someone's bed, you put me on and said I was your favorite." -reminds me of the comfy jumper monologue !!
soo like imagine for me, just for a sec that jeremy & jenny are more than just a platonic duo....
"dancing in your levis, drunk under a streetlight" - jenny & jeremy going for drinks after work, maybe they had a bit too much to drink one night (perhaps to escape the reality of certain authoritarian government...) and they're laughing and talking as they walk through the park late at night. No other people around, but that's the way they like it. the streetlights allow them the slightest bit of visibility.
"hand under my sweatshirt, baby kiss it better" - i'm thinking forbidden touches, maybe not as far as T. Swift goes with this lyric. imagine him reaching for her wrist & holding it for a bit too long. imagine her hand brushing his back as she puts an arm around the back of his chair. imagine a kiss in the heat of the moment and then silence as the two of them wonder *what the hell just happened*
"to kiss in cars and downtown bars was all we needed" - do i even need to explain? ;)
"you drew stars around my scars," Jenny opening up about her tragic past (i.e the ex-bf and car incident the devs mentioned in one of their livestreams) while jeremy listens. and that puts it in perspective for him. it puts jenny and her *whole being* in perspective.
"but now i'm bleedin' " but then jeremy goes and leaves her. even worse, he lies to her and throws his life away for *alan james*. the crazy guy they both used to laugh at and mock with reckless abandon. jeremy went and threw his life away for him without considering how it would affect *her*. and that hurts like absolute hell.
"i knew you, tried to change the ending" - jeremy won't let injustice stand. he'll go back into the lions den to *try* and set things right, to take down advance, even though they're all surrounded and outnumbered and he's *scared* of going back to betterment. he'll double cross disrupt even though they helped him, because what they stand for *isn't right either*. he can't stand for any sort of injustice and jenny *knows* this. she knows this like the back of her hand.
"peter losing wendy" -these two nerdy bookworms would make references to all sorts of classic literature, fairytales, etc. anything and everything one might consider smart.
"i knew you'd haunt all of my what-ifs" - jenny haunted by jeremy's memory in the endings where he's no longer around. she thinks how would things be different?? would things be better? would her heart feel like more than just a half, beating on its own?
"i knew i'd curse you for the longest time." - the relationship between them filled with so many snide remarks and insults that serve as thin veils over their true feelings. but those are too deep, too hard to admit, so they take the easy way out & banter banter banter.
"you'd come back to me" - and he does!! if he can, he does!! and she does everything in her power to help him and/or hold him close to her, never wanting to let him go again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ANYWAYS.... I know jeremy & jenny are intended to be a platonic duo (atleast according to the devs), but goshh, if this song doesn't have me all delusional and such about what they could've been lmao
Some random highlights from tonight, in a random order:
My dad turned to me at one point and said "I think they should DFA Donaldson and have IKF at third" to which I heartedly agreed
This otherwise annoying group of boys in our section booed and insulted German a lot (HE WAS SO BAD TODAY HOLY SHIT). One even kept bringing up the domestic violence. I like seeing people acknowledge he is the worst in many ways
Okay so I was in the bathroom for some of IKF pitching and we wanted to stop by the team store again before leaving, so I didn't see much but IKF pitched!
IKF HOMER! That I saw even closer because we had moved down a level!
My dad bought me a pride hat and I got myself a nice yankee stadium pin
Bader made a sexy play to get a guy at 2b. Can't remember who but it was hot
Monument park is cool!
Less a highlight and more a general comment: I know there were errors (painful to watch) and the offense was quiet (frustrating), but it definitely feels like the biggest reason this game was the way it was was german
On the bright side, I still had fun at the stadium! Seeing a game in person was fucking cool. I want to do it again sometime, hopefully with Judge in the lineup
Fresh Reads Fridaaaaaay !
hello beloveds, I am coming at you hot with a genre that I fear I often neglect on our little Friday get togethers: romance!
before you ask: yes, there are queer romances on they sound very sweet. and they're not even all white! but I have the most questions about The No-Show, which seems to be about... one poorly-organized man cheating THREE TIMES OVER by juggling three women who don't know about each other. but my understanding is that a romance is required to offer up a happily ever after, so how are we solving this one? personally I hope they pull a Korrasami with bonus polyamory, ie, all three women dumping him to date each other instead.
anyway, if you started panting and shaking with excitement when I said there are gay books on that list... I mean, calm down. seek help. but then check this shit out:
not to toot our collective horn, but goddamn queer people have some cool book ideas. there are several on here that I've already had on my TBR - including those by Isaac Fellman, Grace Lavery, and Julia Armfield - and now I may have to be adding QUITE A FEW MORE. if I had to pick just one, I'd say it would have to be David Santos Donaldson's Greenland - I do love a story about having a terrible time!
and speaking of my long-suffering TBR...
okay hey actually. guys. guys? I know that normally down here I'd talk about books from this list that sound cool but. I thought Hide sounded like a pretty interesting concept but then went "wait haven't I heard the name Kiersten White before" so I looked her up and. this woman also wrote a MESSY paranormal YA love triangle Twilight cash-in that I read when I was a sweet baby tween gobbling up anything vaguely weird or wacky the teen room at my local library could throw me. good lord. how are you doing Kiersten long time no see.
anyway. if you, like me, have been feeling a bit overwhelmed by the [gestures at everything] lately and have been contemplating the benefits of laying face down in the dirt for a bit, here are some books that may help. with the urge to lay in the dirt, I mean, not the [everything].
I can personally vouch for Aimee Nezhukumatathil's World of Wonders, which a delightfully unexpected essay collection that took a weight off my shoulders with each passing page.
WTNV quick rundown - 57 - The List
Breathe deep. Deeper than that. Get far below sea level and breathe. Breathe in a cave. Breathe in a deeper cave. Breathe deeper and deeper until you can’t find your way back. Welcome to Night Vale.
The List in reference is the one you were asked to remember all the way back in episode 16. It is now time to use that list. The SSP go around time asking people if they remember the list and saying 'oh boy you're in trouble' if they don't.
The sun disappears, not covered up, it's just gone and everyone is ordered to recite the list. Cecil takes everyone to the weather so he too can start reciting the list.
Everyone seems fine and gathers in Mission Grove Park to check that everyone they know is ok. The SSP throw tear gas at the crowd and announce that today was actually just a drill.
Weather: "Upside Down World" by Paisley Rae soundcloud.com/paisley-rae
Harrison Kip, adjunct professor of archeology at NVCC, announced that he has found something out in the desert but won't elaborate right now. The dig is being funded by unknown benefactors that even Sarah Sultan (president of the NVCC) says she's never met but trusts since they're funding the dig. Harrison is apparently still out in the desert, hunched over something he's muttering about in an unrecognisable language.
The Greater NV medical community announced a city-wide compaign for 'Meatless Mondays' to combat the environmental and health impact a high meat diet has. However, they seem to have mistaken what this is supposed to mean, as rather than not eating meat citizens are encouraged to try and not be made of meat despite it being impossible, resulting in them having to shame each other as the reason the efforts didn't work in a 'Denouncing Circle'.
There's an 'exit 84B on route 800'.
Cecil has started bowling with Old Woman Josie and their little bowling league again. She tells him that construction on the new Old Opera House is going well. They have already completed the initial arches, the outer floodbanks, and the primary stables.  Nobody aside her seems to know what opera even is still.
Josie cheats at bowling by having an Erika carrying her ball down the lane and then kick over the pins. Since nobody is allowed to acknowledge the existence of angels, they have to let the strike stand.
The Man ITTJ is still walking around town but is also still not rememberable.
Cecil still misses Carlos a lot and admits he always feels uncertain and empty and with a sadness that sometimes wells up regardless of what he's doing or if there's a reason to be sad (Cecil, my good man, that sounds like depression). He joins everyone in the park with his microphone (somehow?) which he still isn't sure is attached to anything but is clearly still working so...
Also in the park are: Diane and Josh Crayton (who is a meadowlark), Jackie Fierro (from the pawn shop) who is showing Frances Donaldson (Antiques Mall owner) a cool knife that someone pawned by running in shouting “Hide this” and running out, hooded figures lurking along the corner of the park whilst pointing at various people to leering and laughing, Janice (who Cecil is happy to see) along with Abby and Steve (who Cecil only tolerates) and Janice's friends - Edmund and Megan and Patrice.
Cecil also listens in on and talks about two people called Wilson and Amber being happy to see that each other survived.
Stay tuned next for a surprised man shuffling papers frantically and saying “uh” into a mic he did not expect to be on. Good night, Night Vale. Good night.
