Sydney Powell left a Summit County courtroom in tears Thursday after being sentenced to life in prison for the slaying of her mother.
Powell, 23, will be eligible for parole after 15 years.
Powell was convicted in a jury trial in Summit County Common Pleas Court of murder and other charges related to the death of her mother Brenda Powell in March 2020.
Sydney’s attorneys argued that she was not guilty by reason of insanity, and called three experts who said Sydney had a psychotic break. Prosecutors, though, called a fourth expert who said Sydney wasn’t insane when she repeatedly hit her mother with a cast-iron skillet and stabbed her with a steak knife.
Powell plans to appeal.
“This wasn’t justice,” Don Malarcik, Sydney’s attorney, said after her sentencing.
Malarick asked Judge Kelly McLaughlin to impose the minimum sentence of 15 years to life. Prosecutors, though, urged McLaughlin to impose an additional three years in prison for a tampering charge.
McLaughlin followed the defense’s recommendation in imposing the minimum sentence.
Steven Powell, Sydney's father and Brenda Powell's husband, and Betsy Brown, Sydney's maternal grandmother, had urged prosecutors not to take Sydney's case to trial and to reach a resolution. Prosecutors, though, moved forward with the trial anyway, saying they would leave it to a jury to decide.
Jurors convicted Sydney of two counts of murder — one that means purposely causing a death and the other that involves causing a death as the result of a felonious assault — as well as felonious assault and tampering with evidence.
Powell's trial featured testimony from four experts
Powell’s trial spanned three weeks and was divided into two parts. In the first, prosecutors presented evidence on Brenda Powell’s slaying. In the second, several experts testified about whether Sydney was insane when she killed her mother, whom many said was her best friend.
Defense expert James Reardon said Sydney suffered a psychotic break when she killed her mother. He was one of three defense experts who evaluated Sydney and diagnosed her with schizophrenia. They found that, because of this mental disorder, she didn’t understand the wrongfulness of her actions when she killed her mother.
Sylvia O’Bradovich, however, a psychologist hired by prosecutors, disagreed with the three defense experts. She said Sydney didn’t meet the legal definition of insanity at the time of the crime.
O’Bradovich, who is with Summit Psychological Associates, said Sydney does have mental health issues, including borderline personality traits, malingering and an unspecified anxiety disorder.

“ENTERS FREIGHT CAR TO GET DEPORTATION,” Toronto Star. March 8, 1933. Page 2.  ---- No Jobs and No Home Pleads English Youth Church to Rescue ---- Fred Hickman, of youthful appearance, faced Magistrate Jones in police court to-day, charged with vagrancy. It was alleged that he was caught breaking the seals on a freight car in the Don Valley railway yards.
"This is a serious charge," commented Crown Counsel F. I. Malone, “and I am given to understand there was about $1,000 worth of good missing from the cars."
"Do you propose that accused took them?" asked the court. "No, but an officer of police saw Hickman break the seal and enter one of the freight cars. Arrest was made before accused had time to perpetrate any theft."
"I had no job-no home, and wanted to be deported," cut in the tall English lad from the dock rail. Whereupon the Anglican church representative in court offered to take accused to the church home at Hamilton, Ont., pending further investigation of the case.
To this the court agreed, remanding Hickman till March 22, when a report concerning him is to be forthcoming.
Genuine Sob Story "The most genuine sob story heard lately," was the way the crown attorney described the case of Welcome Stevens, up for theft of food.
"The man has a wife and seven children, and another child expected," said Mr. Malone. "They are all enduring great privation and suffering - being completely destitute, with --
"Good heavens!" exclaimed Magistrate Jones. "See here, Stevens, I'm going to remand you for sentence. Now don't come back."
David Bates' liquor permit showed purchases totalling $154 in less than 59 days. He was fined $10 and costs or ten days for being drunk.
John Deslaurier was sent to jail for 30 days for stealing socks and arm bands in a department store.
Lawyer Sent for Trial Henri G. Smith, charged with a series of 10 defaults involving forgery, uttering and theft, over mortgages dating from 1928 to 1932, was committed for trial on $15,000 bail. Two of the ten charges were given preliminary hearing.
Evidence was given by Frank Graham over a mortgage for $6,500 taken out by accused on a property on Dundas St. It was stated that no such mortgage as was produced had been given.
Henry Vos swore that a mortgage for $2,800 on his property on Jones Ave, was not authorized by him. Mrs. Edith Cook, widow, testified she. had advanced the sums of $6,500 and $2.800 to cover the mortgages produced. "I later found out that Mr. Smith had forged my name," declared witness.
Max Goldman was fined $15 and costs for working a lame horse.
In Early Court Remand till March 15, under $1,000 bail was the order made by Magistrate Tinker in early police court in the case of Phillips Phillip, charged with vagrancy. When first called in court. Phillip was ordered sent to the psychiatric hospital, but since no evidence was heard, defence counsel objected, claiming that his client had the right at least to remand until more full investigation had been made. Phillip is said to have been followed by about 100 people yesterday afternoon in an alleged attempt to interfere at the Beverly St. civic welfare office.
George Koehleman and John Seigman, well dressed, who were arrested for drinking too much, pleaded guilty. When asked by his worship how they liked being in jail overnight. Seigman replied: "The jail's all right. sir. The trouble seemed to be me."
"Now, that's the right spirit." commended the court. "I'll remand you both for sentence till called on."
Albert Holmes pleaded guilty to being drunk and was fined $10 and costs or ten days.
Patrick O'Brien admitted that he had argued with a storekeeper over the brand of cigarettes handed out when he had asked to be given some. "I don't call that begging-and I'm no vagrant." stoutly insisted accused, who was fined $10 and costs or 30 days.
Fined Twice, Loses Permits Francis Reardon's car crashed into another on Dundas St. W. yesterday and he appeared before Judge Coatsworth in liquor and traffic court to-day, P. C. Kearn (326) testified that Reardon "had been drinking and was hardly in a fit condition to drive." At the police station a bottle containing gin was taken from his pocket. Reardon was assessed $10. and costs or 10 days for reckless driving. His driver's licence was cancelled for 30 days. Another fine of $20 and costs or 30 days was handed him for breach of the Liquor Control Act.
William Parker was charged with running his car through a stop street without lights on. Defence pleaded accused's mother was dying. The court remanded Parker till March 15. Bail was set at $500.
Bertram Griffin's truck crashed into the rear of a car owned by H. Precious, at Yonge and Gerrard Sts. Last night, causing $40 damages. Griffin's attitude was that of a man who had been taking liquor," stated P. C. Burney (107). The complainant said that Grifin tried to pick a fight with him in the argument which followed the collision. Griffin denied that he had been drinking. He was fined $10 and costs or ten days.
P.C. Hawkins, R.C.M.P., "spotted" Maxime Berard at Shaw and Givens Sts, with a gallon tin of alcohol in a valise. "This poor fellow is just a sucker," remarked the defence, saying Berard was to be paid a dollar for delivering the alcohol. Berard was assessed $200 and costs or six months and one month..
John Mozechuk was found in a house on Char.otte St. by P.C. Martin and P.C. Kerr with several tins of alcohol. He told them he paid $10 for it and said it was stated to him that if he was caught he would be sent to jail for four months, but it he talked he would be dead in five months. He was fined $300 and costs or six months and one month.
Josephine Mechalchuk was charged with having alcohol illegally. Her house was declared a public place and she was allowed to go.

Our Monday recap includes everything from the drafted teams to Sports Center Top 10 catches in the outfield.
The morning started off with a practice that was meant to loosen up the muscles, but what it turned into was a tryout for the campers to be scouted by their favorite coaches. The looming worry about the lunch time draft left players diving for fly balls, swinging the bat to hit the ball to the moon, and straining muscles they didn’t even know they had. It was as if they were that little kid again in gym class, waiting for their name to be called onto a team. Don’t fret campers, everyone gets drafted! Participation trophies for all!
The doors then closed and the coaching staff got started on the draft. The room was tense as each name was taken and put onto the board. Victor Rodriguez and Frank Viola got into a scrum over a player who they thought would lead them to the 2020 Fantasy Camp Championship. Trot and Dauber whispered side by side, strategically planning their next move. Alan Embree talked up players he knew nothing about to try and throw off next round choices, but the group caught on to his guerrilla warfare tactics. El Tiante fell asleep.

The teams got together, sang a cheer, and headed out to the fields to try and win their first regular season match.
The Bombers and Heroes had a close game in the main stadium. The campers got fired up as their name could be heard over the loud speakers walking up to the plate. Each team was facing the sun in the outfield. Their chances of catching any fly balls was slim. Against all odds, they rose to the occasion! There were multiple catches made that had the crowd jumping up and down, cheering in pure amazement. Steve Wolfe (Awwwoooooooo) made an unbelievable, almost backwards, snag in the right center. The Heroes were able to rally and win 4-6.
Sabe’s Babes and Wins & Saves was a different story. Wins and Saves crushed the Babes, 14-6. Bret Saberhagen was seen shedding a tear in the dugout after the game, while coach Tom Gordon flipped the Gatorade cooler. Yikes… Wins & Saves, congrats on the first game W and welcome to the winner’s circle- for now.
The Legends and the Outlaws had 27 runs all together. These games were coach pitched. Maybe our coaches should get some more practice in before lobbing the ball over the plate. Campers, take it while you can! That was just a warm up. Embree’s Outlaws outlasted the Legends, and came away with the 15-12 victory.
Something must have been in the water at JetBlue Park yesterday morning, because there was another 29 run game. Stanley’s Steamers and Corsi’s Fireballers went neck and neck, fighting until the last inning. Corsi was seen pacing the dugout, almost about the charge the Ump, at every play. After last camp, Corsi was longing for a team that could win a game. And gosh dammit, the Fireballers did not disappoint. His team ended the drought and won the game 15-14. Corsi, your luck may be changing!
The last game was a blowout not usually seen during coach pitched games. Billy’s Ballgamers demolished Nixon’s DirtDogs 18-3. You heard it here folks, 18-3. Trot is known for pitching zingers against his own team, but was that the reasoning here? Or did Billy “Where’s the sunscreen?” Mueller and Keith “I need to take a nap” Foulke draft the dream team to beat?
We’ll have to wait and see!

We’re celebrating July 4th with  the ALAN Review article entitled “Where Are They Now? Remembering Our Most Popular Young Adult Authors.”
Tumblr media
An article written by Don Gallo appeared recently in the Summer 2019 issue of The ALAN Review entitled “Where Are They Now? Remembering Our Most Popular Young Adult Authors.” Among those remembered were four authors with whom I worked very closely during my years at HarperCollins and, with Don Gallo's and the ALAN Review's permission, I'm including those remembrances on the Balkin Buddies blog:
Here they are in  the order they appeared in the article:
Paul Zindel [Tied for first place with S.E. Hinton in 1988]*
Paul Zindel's death in March 2003 ended the brilliant career of a unique individual. Not only did he win a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and an Obie Award for Best American Play in 1970 for The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds (1965), but he was also one of the earliest writers in the field of contemporary literature for young adults. The Pigman, published in 1968, is still one of the most well-known and widely taught novels in the genre. He followed The Pigman with My Darling, My Hamburger (1969); Pardon Me, You're Stepping on My Eyeball (1976), The Undertaker's Gone Bananas (1978); Harry and Hortense at Hormone High (1984); and other novels with attention-getting titles. His writing revealed how well he understood teenagers, believing that “adolescence is a time for problem-solving – for dealing with the awesome questions of self-identity, responsibility,  authority, sex, love, God, and death” (Gallo, 1990, p. 228).
In addition to Gamma Rays, this versatile author wrote a number of other plays, including And Miss Reardon Drinks a Little (1971) and Ladies at the Alamo (1975), as well as a number of movies and television scripts that include Up the Sandbox (1972), starring Barbara Streisand; Mame (1974), starring Lucille Ball; Runaway Train (1985), starring Jon Voigt; Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass (1985), with a cast of 50 stars that included Red Buttons, Ringo Starr, Scott Baio, and Shelley Winters; Babes in Toyland (1986), starring Drew Barrymore and Keanu Reeves; and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1989), starring Keshia Knight Pullman. During those years working in Hollywood, Zindel associated with numerous movie and television actors and became good friends with Walter Matthau who lived in the house next door.
In his later years, Zindel, always knowing what would appeal to teen readers, turned from realistic fiction to monster/horror books, such as The Doom Stone (1996), Rats (1999), and Night of the Bat (2001) – all of them filled with suspense and action and all selected as Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers.
Zindel reveals a lot about himself in his 1987 autobiographical novel, The Amazing and Death-Defying Diary of Eugene Dingman, except that the fictional Eugene grows up in Bayone, New Jersey, while Paul grew up on Staten Island, New York. Of his teen years, Paul says bluntly: “I was an awkward freak.” More about Zindel's early life, family, and adventures can be found in his autobiography, The Pigman and Me (1992), which was named one of the 100 Best of the Best Books published for teenagers during the last part of the twentieth century.  In 2002, the American Library Association bestowed upon Paul Zindel the Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime achievement, and later that same year, he was presented with the ALAN Award for his contributions to young adult literature.
M. E. Kerr [Tied for fourth place with Robert Cormier and Katherine Paterson in 1988]*
Writing under the pseudonym of M. E. Kerr, Marijane Meaker was one of the earliest authors to gain notoriety in the YA publishing world with Dinky Hocker Shoots Smack!, published in 1972. Among her 20 popular novels are Is That You, Miss Blue? (1975), I'll Love You When You're More Like Me (1977), Gentlehands (1978), Him She Loves? (1984), Night Kites (1986), the Fell series (1987, 1989, 1991), and Deliver Us from Evie (1990). Kerr has always chosen to write about differences in people, “understanding them....trying to make sense of it all, never losing sight of the power love lends.”
In an interview published in Teenreads, she explains her motives: “I was very much formed by books when I was young....I was a bookworm and a poetry lover. When I think of myself and what I would have liked to have found in books those many years ago, I remember being depressed by all the neatly tied-up, happy-ending stories, the abundance of winners, the themes of winning, solving,  finding – when around me it didn't seem that easy. So I write with a different feeling when I write for young adults. I guess I write for myself at that age” (“M. E. Kerr).
Marijane Meaker began her career in publishing after she was unable to sell any of her stories to magazines. She presented herself as Ms. Meaker, a literary agent with six clients, and sent out her own work under various pseudonyms, male as well as female. One was a middle-aged female teacher writing true confessions (at $300 a story); another was a young college woman selling to magazines, such as Redbook and Ladies Home Journal; a third “author” told a story, titled “I Lost My Baby at a Pot Party,” about her child wandering from a house where a saleslady was pitching Teflon pots. Along the way, a Gold Medal Books editor convinced her to write a novel about sorority life, for which she earned $4,000 a book at a penny a word. This very resourceful writer also published two or three adult mysteries a year under the name of Vin Packer, and other novels were penned as Ann Aldrich and Laura Winston. Her books for children are published under the name Mary James. “A lot of my stories,” she says, “sold well enough for me to enjoy trips to Europe, an apartment off  Fifth Avenue in New York City in the 90s, and a Fiat convertible.”
M.E. Kerr's novels for teens have won multiple awards, including a Christopher Award in 1978, a Golden Kite Award from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators in 1981, a California Young Readers Medal in 1992, the Margaret A. Edwards Award from the American Library Association in 1993 for her lifetime contribution to young adult literature, the Knickerbocker Award for Juvenile and Young Adult Literature in 1991, the ALAN Award in 2000, and the Golden Crown Literary Society Award for her groundbreaking works in the field of lesbian literature in 2013. In 1996, Long Island University awarded her an honorary doctorate.
A collection of her short stories for teens – dealing with dating, love, race, bigotry, homosexuality, self-love, and  acceptance – titled Edge,  was published in 2015. And Highsmith: A Romance of the 1950s, a memoir recounting Meaker's relationship with famous mystery writer Patricia Highsmith, was published in 2003. Still writing at the age of 91, Meaker recently completed a novel about gay life in New York City during the 1940s and how she became a literary agent for her own work. It's titled Remind Me, based on the lyrics of an old song from that time written by Jerome  Kern and Dorothy Fields (1940): “Remind me / Not to find you so attractive / Remind me that the world is full of men.
Katherine Paterson [Tied for fourth place with Robert Cormier and M. E. Kerr in 1988]*
Born in Qing Jiang, China, in 1932, the middle daughter of missionary parents, Katherine Paterson has lived in a variety of places, from Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, and New York City to China and Japan, where she was a Presbyterian missionary. She now lives in Montpelier, Vermont.
Her highly regarded novels include The Sign of the Chrysanthemum (1973), Of Nightingales That Weep (1974), Master Puppeteer (1975), and Rebels of the Heavenly Kingdom (1983), but she is known best for Bridge to Terabithia (1977), which won the Newbery Medal in 1978; The Great Gilly Hopkins (1978), which won the National Book Award in 1979; Jacob Have I Loved (1980), which won the Newbery Medal in 1981; and Park's Quest (1988), which made The Horn Book Fanfare Honor List in 1988. Published in 1996, Jip, His Story won the Parents' Choice Story Book Award and the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction in 1997. In 2006, Bread and Roses, Too won the Christopher Award and was a Bank Street Best Children's Book of the Year, a Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People, a Parents' Choice Gold Medal historical fiction book, and one of Voice of Youth Advocate's Top Fiction for Middle School Readers.
Paterson has also authored several autobiographical books about her writing, including Stories of My Life (2014), and is a coauthor of Consider the Lilies (Paterson & Paterson, 1986), a nonfiction book about various plants of the Bible that she wrote with her husband, John.
Over her long writing career, Paterson has also received a long list of awards for her body of work. Among them are the Kerlan Award from the University of Minnesota (1983), the ALAN Award (1987), the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for Writing (1998), the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (2006), the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award (2013), and the Massachusetts Reading Association Lifetime Award, along with writing awards from Germany, France, and Sweden. In 2000, she was declared A Living Legend by the Library of Congress, and for 2010-2011, Paterson was the US Ambassador for Young People's Literature. She is also the recipient of more than a dozen honorary degrees, including ones from Vermont College of Fine Arts, the University of Maryland, Hope College, and Washington and Lee University.
Paterson's latest novel is My Brigadista Year (2017), set in Cuba in 1961 during the literacy campaign that made Cuba a fully literate nation in  one year.
Robert Lipsyte
The author of The Contender (1967) turned 80 years old this spring, as his ground-breaking novel passed the 50-year mark in print. Lipsyte is also the author of One Fat Summer (1977), Summer Rules (1981), The Brave (1991), The Chemo Kid (1992), The Chief (1993), and Raiders Night (2006) for teens, and for young readers, The Twinning Project (2012). Lipsyte's list of publications for teenagers isn't especially lengthy when compared to those of some authors who have been writing for the same length of time, but that's because writing books for and about teenagers is only one kind of work he has done especially well. He has also published a number of short stories, essays about sports issues, and biographies of several sports celebrities, such as Muhammad Ali, Jim Thorpe, and Michael Jordan, as well as several nonfiction books for adults, including Nigger, with Dick Gregory (1964), the African American satirist; Sportsworld (1975/2018); and Idols of the Game (1995). As the author of The Contender, one of the very first realistic novels about contemporary teenagers, Robert Lipsyte was honored with the Margaret A. Edwards Award by the American Library Association in 2001.
And that's not all. Among other things, Robert Lipsyte has been a highly respected columnist and prize-winning sports reporter for The New York Times, a correspondent for the CBS television program Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt; the host of his own award-winning television interview program, The Eleventh Hour, on New York City's public television station, WNET Channel 13; author of a television documentary series about sports; and the Life (Part 2) series for PBS-TV on subjects of interest to older people. He is also the author of an entertaining memoir, titled Accidental Sportswriter (2011).
In addition to speaking at a lot of high schools, Lipsyte recently has been flying to North Carolina for a week at a time to teach at Wake Forest University, which he says he enjoys very much. He continues to write a monthly column, mostly on local politics, for his hometown weekly, The Shelter Island Reporter, which he says “gives me as much pleasure as the old Times' column.” He also occasionally writes about sports and politics for a site called Tomdispatch, which distributes to a batch of leftish publications like The Nation and The Guardian. If that's not enough, after his cameo on the O.J.: Made in America documentary film (Edelman, 2016) that won an Oscar, he gets called often to pontificate on various TV documentaries, most recently on one about Sonny Liston, three on  Muhammad Ali (including one by Ken Burns), and another on that “hard year” 1968.
Meanwhile, this very busy author has been promoting the film, Measure of a Man (Scearce, 2018), starring Donald Sutherland, based on One Fat Summer, Lipsyte's 1977 novel about a bullied teen. View the trailer at https://trailers.apple.com/trailers/independent/measure-of-a-man/. “I have toyed with a new YA novel,” he claims, but where will he find the time?
*Based on the list of 169 authors' names Mr. Gallo sent to 41 present and past officers of ALAN in 1988, asking them “to identify the most important and popular YA fiction writers of the time and to add other names of writers they felt were as important.” Due to space limitations, he “limited this investigation to the top 30 authors included on that 1988 list.”

I hope you enjoyed this excerpt and get to read the entire article. Personally, I feel honored to have worked with such incredibly talented authors as well as with all the amazing people at ALAN.

JGP Russia Men short program #13-15
Mikhail Selevko(EST)
Thoughts: I’ve always had a soft spot for both Selevko boys but I think Mikhail did better when they kept him out of juniors. The field wasn’t as tight.
Lev Vinkour(ISR)
Thoughts: ever since skaters have been allowed to use music with lyrics in their programs, I’ve been worried about them picking certain songs just because they are by a popular artist. This was one of those times where I don’ think the song fit the program.
Gleb Lutfullin(RUS)
Thoughts: in my opinion Gleb doesn’t fit the typical Russian profile. He’s dainty and doesn’t have as much power as some of the older skaters. Further study required.
JGP Russia Men Free Program #1-2
Alexander Charnaglov(AUT)
Thoughts: it’s a shame Alexander still needs a lot of work, because he did look good in his yellow vest.
Azizmurod Shabazov(KAZ)
Thoughts: Azizmurod seemed to run out of gas after that mishap with the axel. Yikes
Metroplex level 10: Shanks(TX), Reardon(WA), Tanskanen(MIC), McVey(TX)Patterson(MICH)
Kennedy could’ve used a little bit more distance in her vault. Olivia tried so hard to bounce back from stepping out of bounds on her first tumbling pass. Kaia had great height on her first tumbling pass. Callie had a little bit of leg separation as she came off the table, which may have cause the step back when she landed her vault. It’s a shame Aubrey had that fall on the beam right before her dismount. The dismount was pretty high though, on the plus side.

Hybrid September 11 - 26, 2021 Opening Reception: September 11th 7pm-10pm (masks required regardless of vaccination status)
[Download Zine featuring words and images from by our members, designed by Katya Usvitsky] [Screen-friendly version] Tiger Strikes Asteroid Los Angeles is thrilled to present Hybrid, our first exhibition in over a year. Each member of TSA LA has chosen a work from their personal collection to show alongside their own work, providing an intimate look at the art that we choose to live with in our homes. As we emerge from a year and a half of remote teaching, hybrid learning, and having the interiors of our homes on display through Zoom, we view this exhibition as an appropriately awkward conflation of our public and private selves. The exhibition will be accompanied by a zine that will be published online and available at the gallery. We are so excited to welcome you all back! STEVE THOMPSON'S RELATIVES
Anything you want to know first hand about Key West’s 1970’s forward talk to Steve Thompson. He and his charming wife Cindy discovered Key West then and know everything there is to know about Key West since then.
Steve and I chatted the other night at the Chart Room about 1970’s Key West. His memories exciting!
Steve has a sister Sam and a sister in law Linda. Sam lives in Seattle. Linda, Alaska and Orlando. Steve told me they have religiously been reading my blog for years. Love them! Hope someday to meet them!
Last evening was the night of the Big Caravana. Spanish for Big Caravan.
Key West and Cuba have always been married. All the way back before the U.S. and since. There is an inborn burning relationship.
There is unrest in Cuba again. The people are protesting. Big time. Whether it will turn into a shooting situation remains to be seen.
Whatever, Cubans living in America are already voicing their support for the homeland. “Libre!” is the cry!
There was a parade last night on Duval in support of the Cuban people. The parade had a strange beginning. A different one.
The parade began at 5 pm in Key Largo. Picked up more supporters in Marathon. Entered Old Town around 8 pm accompanied by a police escort.
People in the cars waving the Cuban flag and cheering support for their native country.
It is like those who fled Cuba because of the Castro brothers have been waiting for a correct time to express themselves big time. The time appears to have arrived.
There is another country where unrest has suddenly appeared. South Africa.
I have a special interest and concern for South Africa. My blog has had a large following over the years.
Typical of most unrest, the people are suffering from a lack of food, fuel, money and jobs.
The South African newspaper reported that the people “are on the brink of severe fuel and food shortages” Key supply routes  are being “severed due to social unrest.”
The social unrest involving goods and trucks being stopped by roving crowds, stripped of their cargo, and more often than not torched or dismantled for parts. The truck damage has resulted in billions of dollars lost, shelves of shops and shopping centers standing empty.
Riots have a political unrest basis. Began last week following former President Jacob Zuma’s imprisonment.
Looting has increased rapidly in one week. Once again, food a problem. The same evidenced by the fact that in a 2 day time frame, 9,360 loaves of bread were distributed.
Food is a problem in the U.S. as well. Not a scarcity, however. The problem rather is cost.
I frequently hear people complaining about the cost of groceries. I have been commenting for more than a year that the cost was rising on a “snakey ” basis. A few pennies here, a few pennies there. Now out of sight!
The Chart Room again last night. I’m getting out a bit more.
I was to meet Don and Chris.
Don and Chris are from the Syracuse area. Die hard Syracuse fans. I met them 15 years ago and we became immediate friends. Key West is their “beloved place.” They visit 3-4 times a year.
Oneida Lake sits near Syracuse. Two years ago, Don and Chris purchased a home on the lake. It has become their summer place. They have been here this week so family members could enjoy it.
Both travel big time for their respective jobs. Don is a Vice President of a South Korean company. He is frequently back and forth to South Korea.
Dan Reardon’s name came up. Dan and his wife another couple I have known for 15 years. Met them when they were on a 2 month winter vacation in Key West.
They live in Skaneateles. A Syracuse suburb also. Owned and operated a restaurnat for years in Skaneateles which they sold 2 years ago.
Don texted with Dan. We exchanged photos.
Dan and his wife good people. Always a good time when they visit.
My yesterday began earlier. A haircut with Lori. A lovely woman. She has been doing my hair for 20 plus years.
She and her husband finally got out to Tavern ‘n Town for dinner. The restaurant has not been reopened that long. Business still slow. Food prices are up. Way up! Typical of what is going on in the finer restaurants.
George was bartending.
When Tavern ‘ Town closed for the pandemic, George was let go. A family man, he was fortunate to get a bartending job at Irish Kevin’s. When Tavern ‘n Town reopened, they called George and in effect begged him to return. Every type business in Key West is desperate for help. He returned with a significant raise.
I have to get over to Tavern ‘n Town. I’ve missed George.
Later in the afternoon, a doctor visit. My esophagus doctor. Everything is wrong with me!
When I left, I got screwed up. His offices are in a series of pastel colored buildings. When I got off the elevator on the first floor, I zigged instead of zagging. I had to walk round the entire complex before finding my car.
I agree. I am losing it. Not the problem however. The pain in my right leg. Wow! I had to stop 3 times in spite of using the cane.
Key West weather is typical for this time of the year. Hot with heavy humidity. And this is only the beginning. The worst 2 months heat and humidity wise are August and September.
Several months ago, we were told we would be undergoing a “temporary” inflation. Be of no concern. It would go away.
Not so. The opposite is actually occurring. The rise in inflation in the last 4 months has been the hottest since the 1980’s.
Five percent inflation is bad, but palatable. Over 5, a problem.
Economists say if the rate of inflation continues as it has in the past 4 months, it will annualize at 8 percent.
I wake just before 5 each morning. Catch Way Too Early with Kasie Hunt on MSNBC. An outstanding journalist!
Sad news this morning. It was her last show. She is moving on. She could not mention where yet.
Fortunately, there will be another channel and time for her. And me.
Enjoy your day!
