Vampire Academy (2014)
Tumblr media
Vampire Academy is fully aware of the tropes so many YA novel-inspired films indulge in. It understands what works about them, what to avoid, and desperately wants to distance itself from ”Twilight”. If only it had remembered to be good too. Thanks to Zoey Deutch, the film is by no means a chore to watch, and director Mark Waters does his best with the material, but this film is still frequently unintentionally hilarious.
Rosemary "Rose" Hathaway (Deutch) is a Dhamphir, half-vampire (or Moroi, as they’re called here), half-human, sworn to protect Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir, (Lucy Fry), a Strigoi vampire heiress. They're a more powerful, more evil breed of bloodsuckers who are vulnerable to sunlight, unlike the good ones. Got that? Too bad! When Rose and Lissa return to school after a year on the run, they’ve got to deal with classes, crushes, social cliques, and the possibility of mortal danger now that Lissa's newfound healing powers are revealed to the vampire world!
Vampire Academy suffers from TMSGO. Too much stuff going on! The first half-hour will leave you begging for a newbie who asks the people around them the questions you’re asking - a Harry Potter if you would. There’s an unending flow of exposition that tries to clarify the ins and outs of this world, but there’s no way you’ll be able to separate the stuff that’s going to be relevant now from the foreshadowing, and the breadcrumbs that would've paid off had the sequels this film desperately wanted actually materialized. If you’re familiar with Harry Potter (whom this film borrows liberally from), you’ll be able to just barely avoid drowning in the explanations. If you’re not, good luck!
Once the film slows down with the introductions, you’ll realize just how predictable the story is. When it isn’t flat-out nonsensical, anyway. Sometimes the characters know all about the outside world, as evident with their pop-culture references. At other times, they seem blissfully unaware of stuff like cellphones or guns. Maybe they're just not all that bright. Seems to me like some of the issues that come up could’ve been easily resolved if people used their brains or weren’t determined to be one-track jerks. There’s an awful lot of flagrant bullying happening here but the teachers never discipline anyone.
What's fun about Vampire Academy is that it consistently discovers new ways to suck more than a vampire in a tornado. There’s an action scene towards the conclusion edited so badly, it took me a moment to figure out that the characters were not, in fact, in the same room. And yet, it's somewhat charming. I credit the actors and Mark Waters' direction. Deutch is incredibly charismatic and charming. She’s got great comedic timing and even manages to sell some of the nutty developments and bits of information being crammed down our throats. There are funny and charming moments throughout, making me believe it’s the source material and the script that doomed this film, not the people who were on the front lines.
Vampire Academy is lousy, but had a sequel been made, it wouldn't have been inconceivable to convince yourself that things might've turned around. With all of the exposition out of the way, the characters firmly introduced, and the world ready to go on to bigger and better things, This could've been on the level of The Maze Runner instead of another The 5th Wave. (On DVD, March 24, 2017)

Some cool Easter eggs I caught watching My Adventures with Superman that I want to show to people so they can be in on it with comic book readers: For the first episode's Easter eggs it's here
For the second episode's Easter eggs it's here
For the third episode's Easter eggs it's here
For the fourth episode's Easter eggs it's here
For the sixth episode's Easter eggs it's here
For the seventh episode's Easter eggs it's here and here
For the eighth episode's Easter eggs post it's here
For the ninth episode's Easter eggs post it's here
For the tenth episode's Easter eggs post it's here SPOILERS if you haven't seen this week's episode obviously
Tumblr media
We start off the episode with this shot of Superman with the drawn on glasses. A good homage to what Lois did in the 1980 Superman II movie...
Tumblr media
where she not only drew the glasses but also a full suit and hat on a picture of Superman.
Tumblr media
Next we see Jimmy waking up and seeing someone debunking his conspiracy theories on Sub-Diego.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sub Diego was an actual place in the DC universe before the New 52 reboot. In Aquaman #15 and #16 (2003) , shown here (W: Will Pfeifer, P: Patrick Gleason, I: Christian Alamy, C: Nathan Eyring, L: Jared K. Fletcher for issue 15, Nick Napolitano for issue 16). The underwater city is actually San Diego, but is buried underwater thanks to a tidal wave and makes its first appearance in Aquaman #15 (2003). There was a lot of casualties from this.
Tumblr media
When we get to our title its "You Will Believe A Man Can Lie" a reference to the tagline for the 1978 Superman movie.
Tumblr media
As seen here on the poster, it says "You'll believe a man can fly".
Tumblr media
Next we see our villain, well one of the villains, for the episode, Heatwave.
Tumblr media
In the comics Heatwave makes his first appearance in Flash 140 (1963) (cover art by Carmine Infantino, Murphy Anderson, and Ira Schnapp). Heatwave aka Mick Rory is a Flash rogue usually acting as a rival to Captain Cold aka Leonard Snart. In MAwS, their Heatwave shares the same last name and powers, but MAwS Heatwave is gender flipped. You might have seen Heatwave in the CW DC comics shows where he is played by Dominic Purcell in The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.
Tumblr media
Lois, later in the episode, name drops Heatwave's name. Gotta be honest when Heatwave showed up I was like is that Rampage? Cuz the MAwS design looks vaguely like Rampage.
Tumblr media
If she does show up in MAwS, I'll talk more about her in another post, but for now, Rampage aka Karen Lou "Kitty" Faulkner, makes her first appearance in Superman #7 (1987) (full page here: W&P: John Byrne, I: Karl Kesel, C: Tom Ziuko, L: John Costanza).
Tumblr media
Steve drags Jimmy to film his debunking Flamebird videos and references Starro who I talked about here.
Tumblr media
Lois, later runs around with the Daily Planet police scanner trying to catch Superman and the dispatcher reports that a robbery is in progress at McGuinness Luxe Garage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a nice reference to Ed McGuinness who was the artist for Superman, Action Comics, and Superman/Batman in the early 2000s. If you've seen Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, then you'll know the movie takes inspiration from his character designs in the first arc of the Superman/Batman comic series. The Superman/Batman #1 (2003) cover here is done by Ed McGuinness, Dexter Vines, and Dave Stewart. I like Ed McGuinness's pencils, very stylized.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heatwave name drops Livewire and the Gazzo mod family. Both of whom I've talked about here and here respectively
Tumblr media
Heatwave has been running away from Deathstroke here who has been taking our her crew. Notice that Slade Wilson doesn't have the half black half orange helmet yet that almost every Deathstroke depiction always has.
Tumblr media
He, Amanda Waller, and the General who I totally think is General Sam Lane, Lois's dad, are fans of DBZ cuz of the scouters they're wearing.
Tumblr media
Later in the scene we see the General again he's totally General Sam Lane. I'll talk more about him when we get a double confirmation through a name drop/reveal in a later post calling Amanda Waller, Mandy. What a fucking bold thing to say to Waller! Like damn! power move right there!
Tumblr media
Superman and Deathstroke are fighting under a highway and we see the traffic is heading to Bludhaven!
Tumblr media
Very good reference to my favorite character in all of pop culture, Dick Grayson aka Nightwing. Nightwing makes Bludhaven his city to protect. The city makes its first appearance in Nightwing #1 (1996) (the panel here - W: Chuck Dixon, P: Scott McDaniel, I: Karl Story, C: Roberta Tewes, L: John Costanza). Fun Bludhaven fact, its crime rate is WORST than Gotham! Also HIGHLY recommend reading the new Nightwing run cuz its fucking amazing! Won a few Eisner Awards (think the Oscars but for comic books) recently and I am not just saying that because I am a Dick Grayson fan.
Tumblr media
Near the end of the episode, we see Lois willing to jump off a building to prove that Clark is Superman. A lot of discourse was happening online over this, but I do want to say this is pretty on brand for her to do.
Tumblr media
In Superman II, Lois does something similar and Clark saves her. its just in MAwS, Clark flies to save her thus ruining the secret identity, while in Superman II, Clark does save her but he is still able to get away with it thanks to him playing it more subtly.
Don't know why people we're in such a fucking fit over something that Lois has done before.
Tumblr media
In the after credits scene, Jimmy, who planned a sasquatch finding adventure with Lois and Clark, but they were dealing with their shit and Jimmy was by himself, decides to do the finding on his own and meets a giant gorilla. In the first episode Jimmy mentions an intelligent gorilla in France and my guess is this is Monsieur Mallah. You can read more about him here. If you made it this far down, I appreciate you taking the time to check this post out and if you want to see my other MAwS Easter Eggs posts - Episode 1 is here
Episode 2 is here
Episode 3 is here
Episode 4 is here
Episode 6 is here
Episode 7 is here and here
Episode 8 is here
Episode 9 is here
Episode 10 is here

Despite [Xavier's] previous insistence that he is only whole when able-bodied, he comes to terms very quickly with his return to disability: “My back is shattered, a parting gift from the Shadow King… It appears… if I am ever to achieve my dream… I will need all of you… to walk me there” (Nicieza 23). In the span of a single panel, Xavier acknowledges that he is once again disabled, accepts it, and asks his teammates for help. Due to his previous elation at becoming able-bodied, one would think he would require more time to adjust, to shift his identity once more from “able-bodied” to “differently-abled.” The ease in which Professor X resumes his disabled identity lends itself to the notion that being able-bodied, not disabled, is a plot device. He takes more time to adjust to using his legs than he does to losing them, a pattern generally reversed when other characters become disabled. This smooth transition back to disability implies that his truest identity is as a disabled man.
(emphasis mine) was reading crippled crusaders: disability representation in the superhero genre by cassandra m. nicol a few days ago and was struck by this bit....the idea that charles' "true" self is a disabled self is really interesting. (edited) crosspost from twitter:
the dominant, most objective read is that charles becomes abled, is disabled, + becomes abled again ad nauseam. yet those narrative tendencies have inadvertently created a reading where charles' disability is, functionally, a chronic illness that flares due to outward stimuli.
whether charles' paraplegia is due to physical injury or a brain/psychosomatic/astral issue isn't clear, having been complicated over the years by all the different ways the text has chosen to able + re-disable him.
what makes the most sense to me is leaning into that ambiguity. its both — either mental or physical injury/ailment can cause him disablement. and the back + forth of charles' paraplegia signifies he's uniquely in danger of that specific disablement — paraplegia/spine issues. and those issues happen ALL the time in real-life non-psychic people who experience (non-psychic….i presume) brain damage. the brain + the spine, the central nervous system, they're basically extensions of each other, and are some of the most important parts of your body.
so you can extrapolate that charles has a particularly "weak" spine, and it's likely to give out if he experiences intense physical or psionic injury. and as an x-man, he risks that often.
i also think the "ease" with which he moves from ability one state to another that nicol mentions is important to this. to be clear: we have seen charles agonize over his disability, and especially losing his ability. it's undeniable that it impacts him emotionally. but charles doesn't go through the intense "grieving" process a lot of newly disabled ppl do — the kind he went through himself when he was recovering from his first spinal injury. as nicol points out:
In Xavier’s next appearance two issues later, he is seated in a golden wheelchair and seems insistent that his disability not hinder his participation in X-Men adventures. Instead he emphasizes his usefulness with his telepathic powers, declaring, “I too shall be coming. Though I am crippled once again, my particular talents may be needed there” (Portacio and Byrne 6). His disabled status is stressed through a visual weight of the word “crippled,” both bolded and italicized in the comic panel, similar to how “whole” was stressed when he became able-bodied in 1983. But here, “crippled” is not laden with judgment. It is merely an acknowledgement of Xavier’s condition. This smooth transition back to disability in some ways rectifies his description of “able-bodied” as “whole,” as Charles insists that even paraplegic once more, he is still more than capable of being an X-Man, and he is still the most powerful mutant in the world. Regardless of the state of his physical body, Charles knows that his disability need not impose limitations on his actions; he harnesses his role as leader of the X-Men and his disability is, effectively, relegated to background information.
of course this is in part bc he'd already been paraplegic for years, but you can also see it as him just being ready for it. seeing it as an eventuality, a familiar state that he will return to throughout his life. a chronic disability that exists whether or not he can walk.
There is one more major instance in which Professor X becomes able-bodied. In 2002, a mutant named Xorn restores Xavier’s ability to walk (Morrison, “All Hell” 32). This is the most short-lived instance of Xavier being able-bodied. Only a year later, Xorn is revealed to be Magneto in disguise, one of Professor X’s oldest enemies; Xorn removes the nano-sentinels that had been holding Xavier’s spine together, crippling him again (Morrison, “Planet X” 19). Later, once freed from captivity, Xavier reappears in a chair with alien-like legs, giving him autonomous movement (Morrison, “Phoenix Invictus” 27). This time, he makes no mention of his return to paraplegia. He is in full command of the X-Men, and has again made a smooth identity transition from “able-bodied” to “differently-abled.” The fact that this occurs once more stresses that to be disabled is part of Charles Xavier’s truest identity, and that being able-bodied is a temporary plot point rather than a character trait.
and that raises the question…what does this mean in the krakoa age? does a newly grown body come without that disability? or is it a "symptom" of his mutation? is it imprinted in his mind-soul-whatever you want to call what part of a person cerebro catalogues?
throughout all of krakoa era, there's never been any mention of what charles feels about making his bodies ambulatory. the closest thing we have is the knowledge that he brought his own wheelchairs with him to krakoa which is a solid point in that theory's direction at least.
(interjection from a subsequent thread:
keep thinking abt the fact that charles brought his chairs with him to krakoa…in this place allegedly free of death or sickness he still prepares for his needs to change, as if its an immutable part of him that can resist miracle drugs + literal resurrection.
its so quintessentially x-men that we only get that interesting insight in the backdrop of an ableist story beat where a character is punished and humiliated by…. being dis-abled.
i'm still floored by how incompetent and tactless that whole thing was but that was the same book that gave us hits like kitty's "viking funeral", emma flashing men to distract them instead of using her, you know, telepathy, emma worrying about eating carbs, + other such bullshit. but i'm still surprised it went so under-discussed in x-comics fandom)
via xuân's resurrection, we know that its possible to request your physical disability be preserved when you're resurrected. so this must have been an active choice of his.
i don't think it's odd at all that charles would choose to walk considering his past feelings about it i just wish the text contended with that like at all 😭 but getting into charles' feelings abt his disability is a long ass post for another day.
(i accessed this paper on proquest here via my alma mater. if you would like to read it yourself but are not connected to an institution or library that has access, dm me and i'll send you the pdf!)
addendum: examples of charles’ disability as neurological illness and/or chronic illness

Veronica was never the vocal type. She preferred to observe from a distance, saving her input for when it was most valuable. But sitting in the conference hall at the Carpenter State student union listening to spoiled rich girls bitch about Madison Wells, she found it difficult to maintain her silence.
Madison and her Alphas had dominated campus gossip for weeks. Her recruiting strategy hadn't just been aggressive, it was effective. Even after pledge season she continued poaching girls from other sororities. When a pair of high ranking Sigma Epsilon girls filed a petition to merge their sorority with the Alphas, an emergency meeting of the Greek Council was called to order.
The presidents and officers of five major sororities showed up:
Epsilon Eta Phi, Carpenter State's oldest active sorority and a popular club for old Romero money and kids with connections. President Amanda Hewitt and Vice President Michelle Norton arrived early and took seats at the head of the table. Though their input had little substance, they were always in attendance for special meetings and demanded to speak first.
Pi Delta Kappa, boasting the strictest academic requirements for membership, had a reputation for housing future congresswomen and CEOs. Presidents Tamika Graham and Antonia Reyna attended with Veronica Kirby, treasurer, joining as a consult. The two co-presidents came prepared with a PowerPoint presentation mapping out the projected gain/loss of each sorority.
Alpha Kappa Psi, an exclusive sorority for female athletes, sent a single representative in Demi Snyder. A member of Carpenter State's conference champion volleyball team, Demi held no leadership position in Alpha Kappa Psi and only came to rehash bad blood.
Sigma Eta Chi was the newest and smallest member of the Greek Council, but the loudest sorority on campus. Labeled a right wing hate group by campus activists, the sorority was founded as Carpenter State's only all-white Greek house. President Sadie Bradford and advisor Marla Hunter attended with a binder full of data about Carpenter State's affirmative action programs.
Beta Phi Alpha, once a thriving sorority under the leadership of President Ana Marino, had been most affected by the rise of Madison Wells and the Alphas. With more members moving into the Alpha house by the week, it was Ana who called the emergency meeting. Vice President Morgan Jones and senior member Taylor Byrne came as support.
None of the campus fraternities sent representatives.
"I was hoping for a better turnout, but this should do," Ana said as she rose from her seat to share some pre-written statement about the Alphas. She was interrupted by Amanda who was unhappy about the lack of vegan options at the meeting.
"You knew that Epsilon House was doing No Milk October and yet you still chose pizza. Just being in the presence of all this cheese is an insult to our veganity."
"We didn't know about your dietary restrictions," Morgan spoke calmly. "If you'd replied to our email—"
"Bullshit, Morgan," Michelle cut in. "Ana subscribes to our newsletter. No Milk October was this month's cover page."
Amanda was nibbling on a slice of pizza now, mumbling through tears. "I'm so upset."
"I hear you," Ana spoke in a measured tone, still standing. "And next time we'll try to be more conscious of your needs. But I want to talk about—"
"Nobody gives a fuuuck," Demi groaned. "I want to talk about Melanie Reyes."
"Jesus Christ," Taylor rolled her eyes. "Are we doing this again?"
"She was ours. You know that we have first shot at the athletes."
"She wasn't interested in pledging with anybody," Taylor said. "She struck you down, we took our shot."
"She didn't 'strike us down,' you approached her before our blessing and it scared her away. Do you have any idea what losing the best softball player in a generation means for our reputation?"
Taylor shrugged. "Almost as bad as a one seed losing in the first round of the playoffs."
"We were conference champions!" Demi shouted. "That's still a successful season!"
"Ana's right," Tamika spoke up next. "The Alphas' unprecedented growth is an existential threat to Greek life on campus. We've never seen anything like this before."
"Thank you," Ana gestured dramatically toward Tamika.
"Madison's proposal to merge with Delta Sigma Epsilon is just the beginning," Antonia continued, clicking through graphs of each sorority's historical growth rate on the projector screen. "She won't stop there. She aims to absorb every sorority on campus."
"Why should we care?" Sadie asked. "I don't think we should reward houses for failing."
"We're not rewarding anybody," Morgan said. "We're protecting our institutions."
"Protecting yourselves," Marla scoffed. "It's not our fault people are turned off by your out-of-control, PC, safe space agenda."
"I'm sorry," Taylor waved her hands. "Isn't your house just a safe space for Nazis?"
"Un-safe!" Sadie shot back. "We are not a 'safe space.' It states it in our charter: 'An un-safe space for conservative sisters who want to live free of censorship, cancellation, and the gay agenda.'"
"—And we're not Nazis." Marla muttered.
"Un-safe space?" Morgan repeated. "That's literally nothing."
"It's a safe space!" Ana cried. "You can't just do a thing and call it a different thing!"
Sadie took a deep breath. "I'm sorry, I just feel so threatened right now."
Ana losing her cool was the tipping point. The table erupted now into shouts.
Demi lobbed broad accusations at the Betas' side while Taylor came back with shockingly personal insults. Marla cradled a sobbing Sadie and shouted "Snowflakes!" Michelle and Amanda had begun packing up their bags and were sneaking out with a box of pizza while Antonia tried desperately to steer the conversation back to the Alphas.
And, of course, sitting there silently in the middle of the ruckus was Veronica. The girls jumped at the sound of her stainless steel water bottle clanging against the table like a judge's gavel. She pounded once, twice, three times, until all attention was on her. She stood from her seat, her sisters more surprised as anyone else in the room.
"I'm sorry, y'all, but this is all so fucking stupid," Veronica said.
Tamika gasped, but quickly regained her composure.
"We can argue all day, but there's only one piece of data here that matters to me."
Veronica took the laptop gently from Antonia. She clicked to a page with two sets of data plotted on a line graph. The first line declined steadily across the screen. The second line followed the same trend as the first, but suddenly skyrocketed to the top of the graph near the end.
"This graph tracks the historical average of sorority membership for the last fifty years. The line trending down is all other sororities on campus, while the one trending up is Alpha Delta Theta. It's the only sorority that's growing. And is there any question why?"
"Mind control?" Marla asked to a reception of giggles.
Veronica shook her head. "We can't share a room without going at each other's throats. Yes, Greek life is supposed to be a safe space. It's place for found family. A place to be comforted in our hardest days. And of course, yes, to find really cute boys."
Tamika smiled at that. A lot of the girls around the table had started smiling.
Veronica shook her head with a cute little laugh and continued, "Is it maybe possible that instead of going to war with this year's It house, we work on doing better in our own? Because when I look at Madison, what I see is someone doing serious outreach in the community. She works her ass off, and she's being rewarded for it. Yeah, she's kind of a secret bitch. But I've been to a Greek Council meeting. We're all kind of secret bitches."
Veronica's speech was so persuasive that by the end of the meeting the girls were even discussing inviting the Alphas to the Greek Council. Only Ana and the Betas were left dissatisfied with the outcome, but they found themselves on the outside looking in with Veronica's sudden appeal to good vibes.
"Is it just me," Taylor whispered, leaning in toward Ana. "Or is this all bullshit?"
"It's a fucking set up," Ana growled back, staring down Veronica who was laughing it up at the end of the table with her sisters and the Epsilon Eta Phi girls.
"I think we're on our own now," Morgan said solemnly.
Tamika's piercing laugh caught the attention of everyone at the table.
"At first I was like, 'Whaaaat is she saying?' But I'm really proud of you, Roni," Tamika smiled. "It's exactly what I think we all needed to hear." She shot a glance Ana's way.
"Thank you," Veronica offered a sheepish sort of smile back her way.
The hall emptied out quickly after that with the Pi sisters volunteering to stay behind and clean up. Veronica assured Tamika and Antonia that she could handle the rest and soon she was alone in the conference hall.
When she was certain that her sisters were clear of the door, she pulled out her phone and dialed.
"It's done," Veronica said.
"Successful, I'm assuming?" Madison asked.
"Yes." Veronica's pulse picked up at the sound of Madison's voice. It was suddenly very hot in the student union. Her voice cracked as she spoke again. "The cancellation emails worked. Only the houses we wanted came to the meeting. It was chaos."
"Good," Madison said. Veronica could see Madison's lips moving with her voice. "So the heat's off?"
"Th-they want to invite you into the council."
"Even better. You sound worked up, Roni."
"I'm so fucking hot," Veronica moaned. Her free hand clawed at her breast, her fingers circling the outline of her nipple beneath the fabric of her tight dress. She wanted to tear the dress down its seam. "W-what are you doing to me?" she choked.
"You're an Alpha now, Roni!" Madison laughed. "Being a hungry slut is a requirement."
"I'm a hungry slut..." Veronica echoed. The image of Madison's lips had been replaced by the pink folds of her pussy. Tears streamed down Veronica's cheeks as she pulled the skirt of her dress up, exposing her naked, dripping pussy.
"This isn't right," Veronica gasped, her fingers rolling slowly over her swollen clit. "I need to tell my sisters..."
"Now, Roni," Madison sighed. "Why would you want to do that?"
"It's not right..." Veronica said between soft moans. Her eyes were closed, her tongue slipping out of her mouth. "I'm not right."
This was the problem with the smart ones. They were always fighting their conditioning.
"Listen: Roni," Madison said. Suddenly her voice was all Veronica could hear. "You're exactly what you're supposed to be. A living, breathing, slutty little fuckdoll. You've been that way you're whole life, you just couldn't see it. That feeling between your legs, that aching desire creeping over you, that pleasure beginning to spill over the edge? That's how your body responds to me. It only responds to me."
"Only you..."
"And you live for that feeling, don't you? You live for that reward."
"I do," Veronica's entire body melting at the sound of Madison's voice. "I fucking do..."
"I'm not going to make you do anything, Roni. You can go to your sisters now if you want to or," Madison paused, giving Veronica time to edge closer. She responded with a needy moan, her fingers picking up pace and pressure against her clit. "Or you can cum for me right now. You can't have it both ways, Roni."
Veronica whispered weakly, "Cum..."
"Speak louder, my dear."
"Please let me cum!"
"Cum for me," Madison growled.
"F-fuck!" Veronica's cries echoed beyond the closed doors of the conference room. They would be a whispered rumor in classrooms for the next week.
"Fuck me! Fuck me! Fuck my pussy! Fuck my mind!" she screamed as her body tipped over the edge into total sexual release. "Anything! I'll do anything for you, Mistress! Take me, take my sisters! I don't fucking care, I just need to obey!"
"They'll join you in time," Madison laughed. "But for now I need you on that council. When you're cleaned up, come to the house for further education."
"Yes, Mistress Madison," Veronica said through deep breaths.
"Alpha is everything," Madison said.
"There is only Alpha."
Madison's phone slipped absently from her hand and bounced off of the bedroom carpet. Her voice joined a chorus of moans bouncing off of the walls. Surrounding her were the slick, naked bodies of her properly mind-fucked Alpha sisters, partaking in their new evening ritual.
The girls were handpicked nightly by Madison and, between turns buried in their Mistress' pussy, paired off to fuck each other senseless.
It may not have been what Claire Petruzzi envisioned for her sorority when she drafted the house's mission statement that past summer, but down on the carpet grinding on Caroline Bishop's face, she didn't seem to mind. Both were eager to play a role in Madison's new design.
Sinking low into the armchair in the corner, the freshman Carla had her legs spread for upperclassman Gracie. Carla had recently undergone her own education and was taking full advantage of the household perks. Gracie was on her knees before Carla, proudly lapping at the young pledge's pussy. Carla lost track of the orgasms. They wrapped back around until it felt like a permanent state of pleasure. She bent her head back and moaned: "Obey. Serve. Fuck. Alpha."
On the opposite end of the bedroom, Angelica was paired off with another underclassman, Ashley. They were moving slower, but were just as starved for each other's bodies. Ashley had Angelica on her back, her hand exploring Angelica's wet pussy while her lips suckled at her tits.
"Just like that, baby," Angelica whispered. "Show me how well you obey."
And of course, at the center of it all was Madison Wells. She was down on the bed, her favorite Alpha pledge between her legs. But it wasn't just the feeling of Tina's tongue on her clit that made her cum—it was everything. The sex, the satisfied sounds of her conquests, Veronica's mantras repeated over the phone. She could feel the power washing over her as the orgasm hit her and she cried out just like any other Alpha.
The naked bodies of her sisters in twisted ecstasy appeared like dancing shapes through her blurred vision.
"A kingdom," Madison said quietly.
Tina looked up through glassy eyes, her chin dripping sex. "What was that my Mistress?"
"A kingdom," Madison repeated. "I don't want a sorority, or a school, or a campus. I want a kingdom."

On 6 August 1945, during World War II (1939-45), an American B-29 bomber dropped the world’s first deployed atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
The explosion immediately killed an estimated 80,000 people; tens of thousands more would later die of radiation exposure.
Three days later, a second B-29 dropped another A-bomb on Nagasaki, killing an estimated 40,000 people.
Japan’s Emperor Hirohito announced his country’s unconditional surrender in World War II in a radio address on August 15, citing the devastating power of “a new and most cruel bomb.”
The Manhattan Project
Even before the outbreak of war in 1939, a group of American scientists — many of them refugees from fascist regimes in Europe — became concerned with nuclear weapons research being conducted in Nazi Germany.
In 1940, the U.S. government began funding its own atomic weapons development program, which came under the joint responsibility of the Office of Scientific Research and Development and the War Department after the U.S. entry into World War II.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was tasked with spearheading the construction of the vast facilities necessary for the top-secret program, codenamed “The Manhattan Project” (for the engineering corps’ Manhattan district).
Tumblr media
Over the next several years, the program’s scientists worked on producing the key materials for nuclear fission — uranium-235 and plutonium (Pu-239).
They sent them to Los Alamos, New Mexico, where a team led by J. Robert Oppenheimer worked to turn these materials into a workable atomic bomb.
Early on the morning of 16 July 1945, the Manhattan Project held its first successful test of an atomic device — a plutonium bomb — at the Trinity test site at Alamogordo, New Mexico.
No Surrender for the Japanese
By the time of the Trinity test, the Allied powers had already defeated Germany in Europe.
Japan, however, vowed to fight to the bitter end in the Pacific, despite clear indications (as early as 1944) that they had little chance of winning.
In fact, between mid-April 1945 (when President Harry Truman took office) and mid-July, Japanese forces inflicted Allied casualties totaling nearly half those suffered in three full years of war in the Pacific, proving that Japan had become even more deadly when faced with defeat.
In late July, Japan’s militarist government rejected the Allied demand for surrender put forth in the Potsdam Declaration, which threatened the Japanese with “prompt and utter destruction” if they refused.
Tumblr media
General Douglas MacArthur and other top military commanders favored continuing the conventional bombing of Japan already in effect and following up with a massive invasion, codenamed “Operation Downfall.”
They advised Truman that such an invasion would result in U.S. casualties of up to 1 million.
In order to avoid such a high casualty rate, Truman decided – over the moral reservations of Secretary of War Henry Stimson, General Dwight Eisenhower and a number of the Manhattan Project scientists – to use the atomic bomb in the hopes of bringing the war to a quick end.
Proponents of the A-bomb — such as James Byrnes, Truman’s secretary of state — believed that its devastating power would not only end the war but also put the U.S. in a dominant position to determine the course of the postwar world.
'Little Boy' and 'Fat Man' Are Dropped
Tumblr media
Hiroshima, a manufacturing center of some 350,000 people located about 500 miles from Tokyo, was selected as the first target.
After arriving at the U.S. base on the Pacific island of Tinian, the more than 9,000-pound uranium-235 bomb was loaded aboard a modified B-29 bomber christened Enola Gay (after the mother of its pilot, Colonel Paul Tibbets).
The plane dropped the bomb — known as “Little Boy” — by parachute at 8:15 in the morning.
It exploded 2,000 feet above Hiroshima in a blast equal to 12-15,000 tons of TNT, destroying five square miles of the city.
Hiroshima’s devastation failed to elicit immediate Japanese surrender, however, and on August 9, Major Charles Sweeney flew another B-29 bomber, Bockscar, from Tinian.
Thick clouds over the primary target, the city of Kokura, drove Sweeney to a secondary target, Nagasaki, where the plutonium bomb “Fat Man” was dropped at 11:02 that morning.
Tumblr media
More powerful than the one used at Hiroshima, the bomb weighed nearly 10,000 pounds and was built to produce a 22-kiloton blast.
The topography of Nagasaki, which was nestled in narrow valleys between mountains, reduced the bomb’s effect, limiting the destruction to 2.6 square miles.
Aftermath of the Bombing
Tumblr media
At noon on 15 August 1945 (Japanese time), Emperor Hirohito announced his country’s surrender in a radio broadcast.
The news spread quickly.
“Victory in Japan” or “V-J Day” celebrations broke out across the United States and other Allied nations.
The formal surrender agreement was signed on September 2, aboard the U.S. battleship Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay.
Because of the extent of the devastation and chaos — including the fact that much of the two cities' infrastructure was wiped out — exact death tolls from the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki remain unknown.
However, it's estimated roughly 70,000 to 135,000 people died in Hiroshima and 60,000 to 80,000 people died in Nagasaki, both from acute exposure to the blasts and from long-term side effects of radiation.

McGraw Byrne, 10:34 PM
The stillness of the firm gave Martin pause. It was a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle seen during normal office hours. Only silence met the incessant clicking from his fingers flying over the keyboard as he drafted up the last few contracts needed for his presentation. His eyes flicked over to the clock resting on his desk. Less than half an hour before the partners were set to arrive.
Standing over the office printer, the machine whirred as it spewed out pages upon pages of his manic, caffeine-fueled work. This moment, brief as it was, was the first time he could take a breath all day. Even so, his mind couldn’t stop replaying the events that transpired- an unsettling feeling in his chest that he couldn’t shake since the senior partner meeting took place. Torturously heavy, sinking down to the deepest pit in his gut. He should be celebrating- drinking to the countless billable hours he put in to get appointed as McGraw Byrne’s newest junior partner. But instead, he was here, fixated on the tiny display screen atop the printer.
Printing Page 45 of 194…
Coupled with the heaviness, a fire. Roaring flames that burned fiercely through him, ignited at the sight of his colleagues foolishly celebrating their ‘win’ over the infamous Sadie McGraw. Spilt liquor and joyous cheers for a job only half done. It made him sick.
Then, there was Wind. They were the first to notice his escape from the booth- much to his surprise. Though, he’d be remiss not to acknowledge their uncanny levels of perceptiveness. Why they directed it at him at all was a marvel in its own right- something that inexplicably stirred something inside him.
His excuse for leaving was flimsy at best, but Wind met it with kind hazel eyes, crinkling ever so slightly with pure elation. It kept his feet rooted to the ground for one, fleeting moment before his mind took over once more, giving way to the inferno coursing through his veins. Wind was naïve. And he had a job to do.
Pulling the last of the pages from the printer, he started for the conference room, relieved to see that it was still empty. He made quick work setting up the room, laying out copies of his proposal at each seat. A faint echo of footsteps barreled through the halls, signaling the partners’ arrival. Martin had just enough time to fix his tie before the doors flew open.
“Vanderweil, do you have any idea what time it is?” Eli addressed him first, his domineering tone straightening his back.
“I’m aware, Mr. Byrne. But this was too important to leave for tomorrow morning.”
Eli’s eyes narrowed, looking for a reason to chew him out further. Finding none, he gave a curt nod and motioned for Linda and Reggie to take their seats. “Well, on with it boy.”
“Thank you, Mr. Byrne. Ms. Phillips, Mr. Whitman, thank you for being here as well,” he greeted, his voice steady and sure. “I’m sure it’s safe to say that we’re all shocked by how this morning’s senior partner meeting went.”
Reggie let out a brief chuckle. “Now, that’s an understatement. I had no idea Gabe would be capable of orchestrating something like that.”
“I’m assuming there’s a correlation between that and Mr. Ricci’s absence at this meeting,” Linda added.
“Astute as ever, Ms. Phillips. Yes, Gabe’s conduct was… unconventional. It’s fitting that the nature of this meeting be that as well. I’ll get right to it- the firm’s vulnerable. Left to bleed out from a gaping wound at its side courtesy of Ricci and Velez.”
“Spare us from the theatrics, Mr. Vanderweil. My colleagues and I are well aware of our position. There better be more to this presentation,” Linda chastised.
“There is,” he answered confidently.
“Then I’ll ask you again. Why did you summon us all here?”
“We’re here so I can stop the bleeding.” Martin threw the manila folder he’d been clinging to since the start of the meeting onto the table, spreading out the files for everyone to see. “A signed NDA, amendments to the firm’s bylaws securing McGraw Byrne’s ownership of Sadie’s clients, and updated contracts for everyone in attendance at the senior partner meeting.”
Reggie let out a low whistle. “You did all this in one evening?”
Martin tipped his head in acknowledgement. “I get paid to be the best. And this is only a fraction of what I’m capable of, Mr. Whitman.”
Eli skimmed through a copy of Sadie’s NDA, eyes widening as he reached the end of the document. “Sadie really agreed to sign this?”
“She agreed to my terms, with one contingency.”
“And what’s that?”
Martin slid the phone over to Eli. “That you be the one to wire the money for her buyout directly. If you check the footnotes at the bottom, her agreement to this exchange is only good until midnight.”
Eli sputtered. “Do you have any idea how money transfer works, Vanderweil? There’s no way I-”
“I’m aware, Mr. Byrne. Which is why I offered a compromise- your verbal confirmation that you’ll uphold the deal for her cooperation.”
“She’s strong-arming us,” Reggie shook his head in disapproval.
“She’s using the last remaining card left in her hand,” Linda countered, glancing at the time displayed overhead. “You better start dialing, Eli. Our time is running out.”
The call was brief. No exchanged pleasantries. No warm bid farewell. Only the bare essentials to secure Martin’s deal. The room fell silent after Eli hung up the phone with a tired sigh.
“Well, at least that’s one less fire for us to put out. If that’s everything, Martin-”
“There is one more thing- if I may, Mr. Byrne. I motion to put this meeting to a vote for my immediate appointment as senior partner of McGraw Byrne.”
“Mr. Vanderweil, you know very well we can’t-”
“I’ll stop you right there, Ms. Phillips. Section 7B, sub clause a. Any vote to appoint a new partner may be held if the lump sum of the present members hold the majority of the firm’s shares. This room alone makes up for 58% of McGraw Byrne’s stocks, making this motion valid.”
“We’re grateful for your efforts, Martin..." Reggie paused, searching for the right words to say. "But it’s just not in good faith for us to move to a vote without Gabe present. Like it or not, he is a current senior partner.”
“With all due respect Mr. Whitman, I disagree. Mr. Ricci simply set the precedent after he operated on his own accord without notifying any other senior partner of his plans to oust Ms. McGraw. I’m only returning the favor.”
“He’s got you there, Reggie,” Linda commented with a look somewhat akin to approval. “You have my vote, Mr. Vanderweil.”
“Thank you, Ms. Phillips.”
Reggie looked to Eli, who has been noticeably silent since his motion. Martin turned to him as well with baited breath. Finally, he spoke. “Tell me why I should vote in your favor.”
“Because I did what no other associate thought to do. Protect the firm. And even if they did manage to get that far, none of them could do what I’ve done with the same level of quality. But if that’s not enough-” Martin pulled out another stack of papers from his file. “A cost analysis of the money saved by securing Sadie’s old clients, a draft of her announcing her retirement set to be released next morning, and a proposal for media outreach to mitigate the damages.”
Eli huffed out a soft laugh. “Alright, Martin. You win. I vote yes.”
“Mr. Whitman?”
“Well, there’s no use playing devil’s advocate now. I vote yes.”
“Welcome to the fold, Mr. Vanderweil," Eli said, stretching out his hand in congratulations.
“I won’t disappoint you, sir,” Martin promised, giving him a firm, resolute handshake. “Can I make one final request?”
“Name it.”
Martin’s lips spread into an enigmatic grin. “Give me the honor of announcing it to our fellow colleagues.”

The song "Our Town" from the movie Cars just made me emotional.
I was listening to the song while checking my emails, when suddenly I got curious about its lyrics. It then made me think of Scuderia Ferrari, especially their progressive development in the mid-late 1990s, the dominant 2000s era, and beyond.
Long ago, but not so very long ago The world was different, oh yes it was You settled down and you built a town and made it live And you watched it grow, it was your town
Those lines made me think of how the dream team of Michael Schumacher, Jean Todt, and Ross Brawn (plus of course Rory Byrne, and other drivers like Eddie Irvine, Rubens Barrichello, Luca Badoer, etc) built the team for years before they managed to reap the fruits of their labor in the 2000s.
Time goes by, time brings changes, you change too Nothing comes that you can't handle, so on you go You never see it coming when the world caves in on you On your town, there's nothing you can do Main street isn't main street anymore Lights don't shine as brightly as they shone before Tell the truth, lights don't shine at all In our town
Then of course after the mid-2000s, it slowly crumbled down for the Scuderia. They had very talented drivers at multiple points, like Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso, and Sebastian Vettel, and the 2010s also marked the return of their last WDC, Kimi Raikkonen. None of that immense talent in their roster managed to bring back the so-called Golden Age of the Scuderia.
Sun comes up each morning, just like it's always done Get up, go to work, start the day You open up for business that's never gonna come As the world rolls by a million miles away Main street isn't main street anymore No one seems to need us like they did before It's hard to find a reason left to stay But it's our town, love it anyway Come what may, it's our town
And now we're here in the modern era. We're left wondering if we will get to experience the euphoria of the Golden Age. Some are starting to question if the yearly "This year is going to be our year!" delusion is worth keeping. Nevertheless, the sentiment remains the same: It's our town, and we love it anyway. Come what may.

Wonder Woman is perhaps the iconic superheroine. With her godlike powers, lasso of truth and Amazon heritage, Princess Diana of Themyscira is understandably looked on as one of the clearest manifestations of female power in the comic book universe. There is of course a backstory to WW’s dominant appearance and that lies with the attitude and views of her creators, writer William Moulton Marston and illustrator Harry G Peter. Marston in particular was heavily influenced by his feminist wife, Elizabeth who wanted her husband to create a powerful female hero, physically superior to men, and equal to them intellectually to demonstrate women’s potential to challenge the restrictive gender roles of the early 1940s. The Marstons lived an unconventional lifestyle, establishing a ménage a trois with the beautiful dark haired Olive Byrne, who Peter allegedly used as his inspiration for Diana’s appearance. William Marston’s liberal and pro-feminist views were real enough, but he also had a deep fascination with the bondage fetish and his Golden Age stories are filled with imagery of Wonder Woman being tied up, chained up and generally held captive by any number of male and female villains. It was therefore no accident that Diana’s principal weapon is not her super strength or robot plane, but her golden lasso - a lariat that compels anyone caught in it to tell the truth, but which is also a super tough rope very useful for restraining enemies who did not wish to be captured by the Amazon.
As can be seen from the page above, the bondage in Marston’s and Hay’s work was not confined to Wonder Woman herself. Her college sidekicks, the Holliday Girls led by the overweight but irrepressibly cheery Etta, were frequently bound and gagged and requiring Amazonian rescue, but were more than capable of dishing out the bondage themselves when the occasion arose. As the relative comics artistic freedoms of the wartime years were pulled back in the 1950s, and the portrayal of Wonder Woman passed to other illustrators, the fetish imagery associated with the character was considerably reduced. However, Wonder Woman has remained a favourite comic book character, female role model and feminist icon ever since. The groundbreaking Marstons would be proud.

In 1969, Samuel Beckett and his wife learned that he had won the Nobel prize in literature in a telegram from his publisher. “Dear Sam and Suzanne,” it read. “In spite of everything, they have given you the Nobel prize. I advise you to go into hiding.” Both were notoriously celebrity averse. Suzanne described it as a “catastrophe”. Beckett declined to give a Nobel lecture, and refused to talk when a Swedish film crew tracked him down to a hotel room in Tunisia, leaving them with a surreal mute interview.
Into this temporal void, a new psychological biopic has poured a monumental reckoning, in which the 63-year-old playwright scrambles out of the Nobel ceremony to find himself in a rough-hewn underworld. In “Dance First,” a small masterpiece that premieres next month at the San Sebastian film festival, Beckett confronts the events and the people that shaped him, from his domineering mother to his experience with the French resistance, his brief dalliance with James Joyce’s daughter, Lucia, to his later inability to choose between Suzanne and the radio producer and translator Barbara Bray.
“You know this is going to be a journey through your shame,” he solemnly informs himself. “Isn’t everything?” he replies. It’s interior monologue played as dialogue, presenting an unusual challenge for the actor Gabriel Byrne, who found himself in an old quarry outside Budapest for three days, speaking to a broom.

The Montgomery Family
Hades : Oil Tycoons CONTENT WARNING: DRUG ADDICTION, INFERTILITY
The Montgomery family, a bastion of old money and influence in the realm of oil sales, has seen the rise and fall of many financial dynasties and somehow still holds on. Once a shining beacon of wealth and prosperity, it is not without a few stumbles along the way that has led the Montgomery family to lose some of its shine in the higher circles of New York City.
First Montgomery (75) brought the company to greatness and helped solidify the family legacy within oil sales, with his legacy matched only by his wife, the illustrious First Callahan (73), a retired three time Academy Award winning actress. Together they had six children, raising First Montgomery (52) to take over the family business from the moment he was old enough to conceptualize what the oil industry was - but unfortunately he could not handle the pressure and after taking the business over from his father, within two years he faced a tumultuous downfall due to drug addiction. Supported by his resilient wife, First Montgomery (51), he continues to strive for redemption in the eyes of his father, his wife, his two daughters, and the public at large.
The eldest daughter, First Harris-Montgomery (50) took over the mantle as CEO of the company and all of the challenges that come from being a woman in charge of a male dominated industry. Facing her own trials at home with problems of infertility and the overwhelming desire with to be a mother, she and her husband First Harris (51) turned to adoption in the early years of their marriage, raising a son and a daughter now in their twenties. First Montgomery (48) has also made a splash in the headlines, both for his successes in architecture and for his newly public engagement to First Harrington (39), at the urging of his father to try and secure more stability for the family’s ever changing financial and social status.
Behind him are three sisters: First Montgomery (45), a successful political news correspondent, First Montgomery (40), a middle school teacher, and First Montgomery (38), a former prima ballerina turned studio owner and choreographer in New York City. The three daughters have seemingly been able to escape the familial pressure to go into the family business, though it hasn’t been without personal difficulty from their father.
