The dream had been dreamed
The air burnt in Lumine’s lungs as she ran down the different passages of the cave. Aether was barely breathing while she kept him up with the remaining strength she had left.
There was no way out, nowhere to run but in circles as the beasts that called themselves protectors of their land and people came closer and closer.
Lumine could hear her heart beat in her ears, feel it in her throat. The adrenalin ran through her body, her eyes darted around for which way she should take next to make the Archons lose sight of Aether and herself.
She ran, and ran, and ran.
Until she finally came to an halt in a slightly bigger chamber of the cave. It was obvious that these caves had been used before, used by the people that resided under the grounds of Teyvat – Khaenri’ahns.
Somewhere behind the blonde twins, far away, Lumine could hear the clashing of metal, the ruttling and trapping of feet hitting the cold stone floors. They tried to catch their breaths. Who would’ve known that those Archons weren’t thankful for what Aether had done for them, for how much Lumine’s brother did to help them out.
They just wanted to save this world, but it seemed this world didn’t want to be saved by them.
It was time for them to leave, but how? Lumine and Aether were in no condition to fight, to walk, even breathing was troublesome. In these moment of fear, Lumine usually could rely on her twin brother, on her subordinates of the abyss, on Dainsleif.
Thinking of the blonde man, Lumine caught glimpse of something blonde in the corner of her sight. But whatever it was… it was small… a child? The former princess of the Abyss slowly turned her head and so did her brother, who was still panting. Were they hallucinating?
A child – small, blonde, blue eyes, star-shaped pupils – wearing a white shirt or dress that was definitely too big on it. Two pairs of golden eyes opened in horror. That kid looked exactly like him, like Dainsleif.
“I found you.”
A child-like voice spoke. That, that was not Dainsleif, it couldn’t be. This must’ve been a trick.
The ground rumbled underneath their feet and Aether clung tightly against Lumine, barely able to keep himself up.
“We’ve got no time to lose.” The blonde child spoke and motioned them to follow. The twins glanced at each other. This was suspicious, but something told Lumine that trusting this… this hallucination was right, it felt right.
“…Who are you?”
“Your words wound me, Aether. I may have changed in form… but my appearance is mostly the same.”
There was no way this was true. It couldn’t be.
“Come on, you two. If we don’t hurry up you won’t be able to make it.”
The child, Dainsleif, ran into a smaller path that Aether and Lumine could barely fit in. They craled through to find themselves in some… cavern of the cave. There were some hilichurls around, the curse still affecting them greatly. Some of them were dead, some of them sitting by the campfire in the corners.
As Lumine and Aether looked around, they noticed how lifeless all of those Hilichurls looked, as if all of them were to wither soon.
Dainsleif stopped in the room and turned to the blonde twins. His eyes, oh his eyes, the shone so brightly, brighter than Lumine had ever seen in those years she had spent travelling with Dainsleif. They were filled with hope, and Lumine couldn’t seem to grasp why.
“As you’ve noticed my body has changed forms since we last saw each other.” Dainsleif spoke up. His hand reached up to touch the scarred, slightly burnt skin on the right side of his face.
Taking a deep breath, Dainsleif continued to talk “My body, I’m unable to be saved but I know how to save you.”
The twins shared a deafening silence. They stared at the small, fragile blonde in front of them. Their breathing had calmed down but the suspicion and disbelief was still written all over their faces.
“I couldn’t save you before, so please, let me save you now. Teyvat, this world can’t be saved anymore. It was destined to destroy itself sooner or later. The day the Heavenly Priciples took over Teyvat it was doomed to fall apart.”
“What are you talking about?! What do you mean this can’t be saved… that you can’t be saved….”
Aether’s voice shook in anger and fear. Was there really no way to save this world from it’s tragedy? His twin sister remained still and silent. Her eyes were wide, eerie, while she stared at the small form of Dainsleif in front of them.
Dainsleif sighed.
“Listen… It has already begun. And the least I can still do is save you. You don’t belong here. You don’t deserve to suffer this tradegy, too. I couldn’t protect my region, my family, back then, so let me protect you now.”
There was a glowing spark falling from Dainsleifs hand, one… two… five.
Slowly he and all the hilichurls around them had a yellow glowy dust rise up into the air. The ground underneath Lumine and Aether shook once more, the sounds of war behind them. As the twins looked around, it almost felt like this world, this dream of a world was starting to fade away.
As the realisation hit Lumine and Aether, it was already too late. Dainsleif raised his arm, while more and more of him started to dissolve into a beatiful stardust.
Lumine’s eyes particulary widened when she saw that goddamn smile on Dainsleif’s face. That same smile he used to have whenever they walked around Khaenri’ah shortly after her arrival.
A shaky breath left Dainsleif one last time.
“Farvel, min elskede.”
The words rung in Lumine’s ears as she knew that those were meant for her heart to be heard.
A golden magic spread out of Dainsleifs hand that reached out to them. The last thing Lumine and Aether saw of Dainsleif were the tears that fell from his eyes while everything surrounding them turned to dust. Everything was so loud, screams, rubble crashing onto the floor, the ocean, birds in the sky.
When Lumine and Aether awoke, they were not sure where they were. People in uniforms surrounded them and talked to them. Aether could see their mouths move but their voices didn’t seem to reach them.
The silence was so, so deafening. Lumine vaguely registered the tears that rushed down her face.
“Farewell…”
The dream had been dreamed.
