#Disney said OTP and they delivered

all the stuff you say about how good relationships have people walking the same direction and complementing each other as individuals is so spot on and why I love portwell so much!! I couldn’t agree more. I just hope Disney stays true to this in the third season and doenst listen to all the portwell hate. The characters were written for each other :)
Thank you! ❤️ It's something that I think is true for couples in both fiction and real life, so I love seeing that reflected in stories. It's why I love Portwell so much too, and why I love all of my OTPs, really!
I really see no reason for any of us to worry about the quality of the writing on HSMTMTS changing. Tim Federle has already delivered us two excellently written seasons, and I think he already has plans for future seasons, so I'm not worried about any kind of shift in the writing. Character arcs don't generally stop complementing each other, since we can already see where those arcs are headed in the very first season. And HSMTMTS' writing is too consistent and good for them to drastically change EJ or Gina's arc. Plus, Tim has already said that the passion from the fans doesn't change his story. Have some faith, anon!

Actually, Jamil is Snow White
Now that I have your attention with my batshit theory, let me explain it along with my other predictions for the future events of chapter 5 in a 2,500+ word mess of an essay.
The past chapters have all correlated to the plot of the original Disney movie in some way. So how does chapter 5 correlate with Snow White? For the movie's story, it starts with Snow White living with her stepmother, who is vain, self-centered, and afraid that one day Snow White will surpass her beauty. The Queen makes efforts to suppress Snow White's beauty by making her a scullery maid, but Snow White does eventually surpass her. This causes the Queen to order her Huntsman to kill Snow White, but the Huntsman can't bring himself to do it and he presents the queen with a decoy heart instead.
What's interesting about TWST is that Neige has already surpassed Vil at the very beginning. Furthermore, rather than focus solely on his own beauty and beat down potential rivals, Vil attempts to nurture the beauty of the rest of his dorm and the VDC team. So how in the world do we correlate the events of the chapter to the original movie? Well, we know from previous chapters that the person twisted from a character might not be the one to actually take that character's role in the story. Though Farena exists, the one Leona tries to sabotage is Malleus. Though Rielle exists, the one Azul makes a special deal with is Yuu. Even though Neige has played a bigger part in the story so far compared to Farena and Rielle, he still might not actually be the Snow White of this story. So who are our possible candidates here?
As the person meant to rival Neige's cute appeal, Epel is the first one to pop into mind. Perhaps the NRC team's performance during the VDC goes well enough that Epel suddenly gets tons of popularity. The internet latches onto him, so much so that, at least temporarily, he ends up surpassing both Vil and Neige in Mira's beauty calculation. However, this wouldn't make sense. The Queen is supposed to hate and sabotage the Snow White, and Vil has no reason to do that to Epel after spending so much effort helping him with the express goal of having him beat out Neige. So who else?
While browsing Pixiv one night, I came across a funny comic (it was long ago enough that I don't remember how to find it again, unfortunately) where Azul actually did livestream Jamil's evil monologue in chapter 4. Rather than becoming a big scandal though, it actually becomes famous because of how good-looking Jamil is, so much so that Vil finds out about it because Jamil's name is the one Mira tells him when Vil does a beauty check. Vil proceeds to change his plans for the VDC by dumping Epel and choosing Jamil as the sole main vocal so that Jamil is his "poison apple" against Neige instead.
With the recent update, Vil's plan for the VDC is officially finalized, so that comic is firmly in AU territory. However, what if something similar happens? The NRC team's performance goes amazing. However, it is not Vil or Epel that gain attention, but Jamil, the 3rd main vocalist. Against Vil and everyone else's expectations and plans, the internet goes wild over this mysterious pretty boy, boosting Jamil into the position of most beautiful.  Even Neige had to spend some amount of time getting gigs and whatever to attain his fame, but Jamil has done basically nothing outside the VDC and now he's suddenly the best... How would Vil feel about that?
With the whole trend of the previous overblot causing the next, this theory of Jamil = Snow White makes sense. Though they could always make it so it's Neige and Epel doing the stuff and then at the end Jamil delivers a speech or something that gives the final push to overblot, it would be a lot more interesting (and funny) for Jamil to be thrust into the spotlight earlier on and be a main reason for Vil's overblot.
However, all of this assumes that the beginning of Snow White correlates with the beginning of chapter 5. Let's consider that the beginning of chapter 5 actually correlates with the situation later in the movie when the Queen is plotting to get Snow White with the poison apple. In this situation, Neige would actually be the Snow White of the story. However, unless we pull some funky timeline stuff, the theory I've seen of Rook betraying Vil wouldn't happen then, since we're already past that point in the movie. So what is next? In the movie, Snow White bites the apple and falls asleep. The dwarfs return to their cottage and chase the Queen, who eventually falls to her death when a lightning bolt destroys the precipice she's cornered on. (Fun fact from Wikipedia, her scream while falling was reused for Sleeping Beauty when Maleficent gets stabbed by the Sword of Truth). Anyway, the dwarfs proceed to put Snow White in the glass coffin until a year later when the prince kisses her and takes her to his castle.
Welp, look here, we have the dwarves in TWST, so they could definitely fulfill the try to hurt Vil part here. But what would lead them to do that? Assuming that as RSA students they are heroic, they would hurt Vil if they felt that he had hurt Neige. Vil's plan for the VDC competition seems to just be performing like normal and hoping that their hard work and effort will shine through and win them the competition, so either something has to happen that causes a last-minute change to that plan or some sort of misunderstanding (Vil getting canceled) happens. How would a misunderstanding happen? It could originate from fans angry that Neige didn't win, but Vil has plenty of his own fans to counter that and make an even-sided battle. Some new falling out between Vil and Epel could occur, resulting in either Epel himself going and hurting Vil's reputation or someone else (the media or Neige) seeing Epel distraught and believing that Vil is abusing him in some way. If it's Neige that could be interesting since it'd kinda be a situation where Epel is Snow White and Neige is his Huntsman. Neige x Epel new otp??? haha anyway, there's also the possibility that the RSA students are not heroic, and the dwarves go and make rumors about Vil themselves as an underhanded strategy to give Neige the victory.
All this talk is making me forget about my boy Jamil though. How would he fit in here? Again, from the previous overblots, we know that Jamil will likely oppose Vil in some way. We have also established that this chapter 5's start = the Queen's poison apple plan's start, so Neige is the Snow White. The remaining roles for Jamil are the dwarves (unlikely since we have actual dwarves), the huntsman (unlikely since timeline and also Rook exists), and finally, the prince. Jamil x Neige new otp??? lmao anyway, What would this role mean for his involvement in the story? Well, the prince only shows up at the end to wake up Snow White, so that would make this a situation like I mentioned before with Jamil just showing up to do a speech or something that pushes Vil over the edge. Boring, what else could we do?
Well, what about the original fairy tale of Snow White? In there, the dwarves don't kill the Queen. Instead, she lives until the day of Snow White and the prince's wedding, where the prince makes her dance in red-hot slippers until she dies as punishment for trying to kill Snow White. Why would Jamil give enough of a shit about Neige to go against Vil like that though? Well, y'know what fuck it let's squeeze someone else into the role of Snow White. Kalim certainly has the hair color for it. Since Kalim is just one of the backup vocals and hasn't had much going on aside from his personal character development this chapter idk what Vil could possibly do to him. Perhaps something pertaining to his family's wealth and fame? Whatever it is, some sort of threat to Kalim would be enough motivation for Jamil to do something to Vil. Interaction between Kalim and Jamil would also serve to finish up whatever development is going on between them. Seriously bro I know Jamil was probably just stalking Kalim in that one episode to make sure he's safe but that scene is really haunting me WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Whatever, let's keep this circus rolling with some Rook discussion! Again, we got the theory that Rook will betray Vil like the Huntsman betrayed the Queen. To discuss this idea, we gotta discuss Rook's motivations first. In episode 5-27, quoting from the translation on the wiki by Kanade Musings, Rook claims that "being a mere spectator to beautiful people and beautiful things provide [him] with such happiness" and he is "here to offer what help [he] can to help save beauty." However, he points out that "Vil does not need [Rook] to save him;" instead, what Rook wants "to protect is not Vil himself, but rather the 'beauty' he possesses." The chapter ends with Rook saying that the others would understand what he's saying if they encountered a "beauty that is blinding" and would "bring light to [their] lives."
So, with this information, would Rook betray Vil and why would he betray Vil? Well, there's the possibility that RSA's performance wows him and he switches to protecting Neige's beauty. However, this doesn't feel right to me. Neige is very famous. His first appearance was in a commercial that Cater got even when not specifically trying to find stuff on Neige. I would seriously doubt that Rook has not already done research into Neige and observed what beauty he has. If Rook doesn't already find Neige extraordinarily beautiful, I doubt that a single dance performance could transform his opinion of him. However, what if that was compounded by some loss of Vil's beauty? However, would Rook allow that to happen? He expressly said he wishes to protect Vil's beauty. If Vil lost beauty, would Rook really abandon him, or would he work to bring Vil back to his senses and restore his beauty?
Now, going back to the idea of Rook doing a betrayal, we already established way back at the beginning of this monstrosity (if you made it this far please take a hydration break or something alright? take care of yourself I love you) that Neige is not necessarily the Snow White of the story. So, we have the possibility of Rook turning against Vil on Epel's behalf, which... doesn't seem right. Idk it might be because I still just can't envision a scenario with Rook outright betraying Vil. Again, Rook has spent a bunch of time observing Epel and watching him grow. What could Epel possibly do that could mega boost his beauty in Rook's eyes? He's spent time observing Jamil too, though not as much as he observes some other people. Like, Rook is a hunter, extremely skilled at assessing targets and figuring out what makes them tick. For his opinion of someone to seriously change, it would require equally exceptional deception or change on the target's part. Seriously, why would he betray Vil?
Okay, how about we consider what exactly Rook finds beautiful. As we know from the auditions (ボーテ!100点!), Rook was able to find beauty in every person's performance, no matter how clumsy or unskilled they were. So, we get the sense that at the very least, Rook considers things beautiful that most people wouldn't consider beautiful. Then, what makes Vil beautiful to him? We know Vil is beautiful by normal person standards, but Rook doesn't go by normal person standards. Does Rook feel drawn to his determination? His power? Something we don't know about yet? I don't think we know for sure, so we don't know what it would take for Vil to lose beauty in Rook's eyes.
Well, there's a part of Rook that hasn't really come up in the main story yet: his fascination with the nonhuman students. This just brings up more questions. Since Vil is human... as far as we know... Rook's behavior towards him is motivated by something different than that which motivates his hunts, even if that something different is just a different way of being beautiful. ARGHH I DON'T KNOWWWWW we're going into his voice lines
Alright, ceremonial robes home tap 3 (from twstarchives): "There is beauty that some are just born with, but the beauty you work hard to achieve holds immeasurable power. Isn't that right?" Okay now we're getting somewhere, he appreciates hard work! Oh yeah didn't Vil say some stuff cause he felt defeated by Neige being better even though Vil put in all this hard work? The development of that sort of attitude would probably constitute a loss of beauty. Hard work would therefore also make someone beautiful in Rook's eyes.
So, who works hard? Yep, Jamil we're bringing you in again. Remember, a change is needed to drive the plot and prompt a change in Rook. Haven't we had a major change in Jamil's attitude already? Starting with having to funnel all his hard work into Kalim and keeping himself under Kalim, after chapter 4 Jamil is now channeling his work into himself and finally showing off his true talents. Given that Rook can't possibly stalk everyone in NRC in-depth, he likely doesn't have a complete idea of Jamil's capabilities especially given how Jamil was specifically trying to stay under the radar. This may give Jamil the possibility to surprise Rook with his full power, potentially shifting Rook's opinion enough to give him a significant appreciation of Jamil's beauty.
With all this information, I think I can try and build a rough simulation of events. So, the VDC teams do their performances and wow the crowd. In the meantime while the judges are deciding who wins, some shit goes down: Vil gets canceled or something, Jamil gains popularity, idk something with Neige & the dwarves. Vil's mental health takes a turn for the worst and he resorts to underhandedness. He enlists Rook for some plot against Jamil or Neige. However, Kalim gets caught in the crossfire. Inspired by Jamil's beauty and efforts to help Kalim, Rook ends up going against the plan and Vil. Vil overblots, blah blah backstory, then the judges release the results of the competition, and the winding down/aftermath/party time is the 2nd day of the festival whatever when the gang can go see all the other booths and stuff.
Even after all this I sincerely doubt my final prediction here will come to pass but y'know, all about the journey not the destination. Honestly, I thought of the title of this post when I was only partway through like "Haha isn't this theory about Jamil being Snow White so out there" but nope that's actually a foundation of my ideas now. What am I doing???   Anyway, hope you enjoyed reading this mess. Please feel free to message me or something if this rant gave you any ideas that you wanna share.

It’s okay to not be okay, final thoughts
Tumblr media
This drama was like a delicacy, a delicious dessert you’re not quite sure how it’d taste but have been eagerly awaiting... and it did not dissapoint. While this drama had a story, a mistery at the core of everything that united (or reunited) our characters in more ways than one, this drama was more about the people, rather than the story.
First thing first, I gotta say that I was in love with MoonYoung’s character from the start, the very first scene we saw her aaaaannd 16 eps later, she was still my favorite in the drama. When have you seen a female lead like her? Not only was my sight directed towards her thanks to her amazing wardrobe, but it was also because she had this magnetic presence that it always lead me back to her everytime she was on screen. But I knew she was gonna suffer (more than she had already done) and the drama did not waste time to get into that.
Tumblr media
My girl went through so.freaking.much. I was almost like KangTae at one point, in the sense that I wanted her to remain ignorant of all the awful things around her. Because, while there certainly wasn’t a competition of “who’s got the most terrible childhood” I feel like she, regrettably, had it the hardest. Two abusive parents, yikes and then one tried to kill the other.
And then she practically had to grow up on her own. I really really wish the drama could’ve spared her some of the pain she experienced, especially with KangTae (cause let’s be real, was it neccesary so much rejection even after he had accepted his and her feelings?) but she started to, slowly, be more aware of other people’s feelings and grievances, she became more empathetic. And I was very proud of that, but to me, that was the only grown up thing she needed to do.
Tumblr media
Then we have KangTae, whom I adored and felt bad for because he essentially felt he was born just to take care of his brother, and while I don’t think this was really the intention of his mom or what she saw him as, she still made some damage that he had to carry for two decades. But, KangTae was a very repressed man, even beyond his lustful desires hahahaha and he was used to bottle everything up: anger, sadness, regret, bitterness, pain, etc. And so when his “safety pin” started to slowly be taken off him, things were not always pretty. I’m sympathetic to his pain, but also I was never his fan when he snapped, wrongly, at MoonYoung, or other for that matter. Or when he concealed some truths from MY. But again, I recognize this was part of the conflict of his character and of course, without these things his part in the drama would’ve felt incomplete and like there was nothing in there to improve, to make him grow.
Tumblr media
I was so glad that he learned how to have fun, how to let go and how to smile with genuine happiness.
Tumblr media
Hyung. Our dear Hyung. When the drama started, you could feel how hard it was for KangTae to acomodate everything around him for his brother’s needs, so I guess that took my attention away from SangTae and made me focus on the little brother more, to a point where I could just see how difficult life had been for him.
However, the drama kept coming back to Hyung, obviously, and I started to really see him. Not as the “work” KangTae have been dedicated to his whole life, but as a the person he was. And boy, when I gave him the chance (and it took me a while, my mistake!) he just stole my heart and I just wished desperately for his happiness. Actually, I wanted him to find his own path and leave the OTP to their alone time at the start of the drama, because I kept thinking “this codependency it’s not healthy” but that changed when Hyung started to accept MY into his little family, because it showed me he was capable of accepting change and do well with it. By the end, I loved him almost as much as I love my Moonyoung and a bit more than KangTae (sorry!) and that’s why the ending caught me by surprise. Careful with what you wish for, I guess. I wanted Hyung’s happiness as much as I wanted the OTP together, but I had dropped the thought of him going his own way.
Tumblr media
Still, I was so proud of him in the end. SangTae was the best older brother ever. Also, Oh Jung Se, sir, you did a great job, *in MoonYoung’s voice* WOW. The acting was wonderful in this drama, but for me, he was the one who did the best job. *fervently clapping*
I really don’t have lots of thoughts on the rest of the characters. The friends and ahjuma, the director from the hospital, the staff and the patients each helped the drama come to life and even the cameos were touching and inspired something in our main 3 (as seen in the book by MY and ST). I do have a tiny problem about Joori’s character, though. Because in the beginning it looked like she was going to be trouble and honestly, I would’ve loved to see her as a villain and to hate her hahaha she had the potential but in this drama the “evil” was already established and it wasn’t exactly just a person. So I guess I’m okay with that. Still, a bit of a missed oportunity, cause by the end I did not care much for her character. Ooops.
Tumblr media
Finally, the OTP. If we go by the Disney definition, they certainly did not have a fairy tale kinda story BUT if we look at the real fairy tales, the ones that MoonYoung grew up with and later, wrote about, then their story was every bit as creepy and tragic as your average Adersen story. Fun, right?
The guy who couldn’t smile a genuine happy smile and didn’t know how to have fun and the girl who was an empty can and didn’t care for her emotions and even less for the emotions of others. They found happiness together (with Hyung’s help, of course). Also THAT CHEMISTRY!! It was on freaking fire. I remember saying I would never forgive this drama if they didn’t put at least one steamy kiss scene LOL and thankfully, I have nothing to forgive, because they delivered. And they even went all the way *wink wink*. I guess, I gotta thank Kim Soo Hyun and Seo Yeji for being incredibly atractive and have that amazingly sizzling chemistry. You did great guys.
Tumblr media
ASDFGHJKDFGH!!!
Like I said, this story was character driven and that could only have worked if it had amazing characters, and thank goodness, it did. So, rather than missing this drama, I’m gonna miss our trio a lot. But it does makes me happy that they became a happy family and that they’re healing and had the courage to find their happiness. A very inspiring message this drama gave, without a doubt.

FFVII: returning to my first love
*peeks out of the corner of my lurking spot*
Hello? Anybody out there? It’s only been, oh you know, four-ish years since the last time I’ve posted anything here. I apologize in advance for anybody who’s still following me from my Castle days. If you couldn’t tell from my extended absence, I’ve mostly moved on. Castle and Beckett were fantastic characters that let me to play with some deep-dive analyses, and Castle will always hold a special place in my heart as my comfort show and my first real and extended experience with online fandom. I’ll always be grateful to the community I’ve had the joy of interacting with (or, the community with which I’ve had the joy of interacting, as Castle would correct me my dangling preposition).
I honestly didn’t think I would ever have reason to come back to Tumblr after Castle ended. But the FF7 Remake has returned me to my very first love--when I was young and innocent and before I knew anything about OTPs or ship wars. I’ve been back lurking for several months now and seeing all the fanart/fanfics and fun theories and analyses has reignited my enthusiasm for the FF7 franchise. It’s also fun coming back to this franchise with a more mature understanding of the themes/concepts that completely flew over my head as a young preteen.
(This ended up being super long, so the rest is below the cut to spare everyone the pain of scrolling. Apparently, my rambling tendencies have not changed at all. lol.)
When FF7R was officially announced (five freaking years ago!), I was filled with apprehension. FF7 was my first taste of a “grown-up” game. I was 11 and played my brother’s copy of the OG on PC in 1-2 hours spurts on the weekends when I visited his apartment. It took me months, if not years, to finish the game (I ended up stealing his copy to play on our computer at home...lol), and I was so blown away by it. I remember the exact moment I finished it and how I was literally shaking as I watched the ending FMV.
Later, when I found out my brother had a copy of FF8 (my poor brother was so accommodating to his annoying little sister...haha), I was so excited to play, in large part because I thought it would continue the story of FF7. Young, naive me didn’t understand the numbering conventions of Final Fantasy titles. I was madly theorizing and breaking my brain trying to find connections between the two games’ plots and had literally played through more than half the game before I finally realized the storyline of FF8 had absolutely nothing to do with FF7. I was sorely disappointed, and I think that has somewhat tainted my appreciation of future titles. Not to say I haven’t enjoyed the subsequent FF titles, but I think a little part of me is always comparing them to that first experience of wonder and awe that I had with FF7.
I discovered fanfiction in my teens and starting writing FF7/Cloti fics in college. Aside from interacting with a few fic writers at the time, I was not involved in any online communities, so I kept myself pretty free of any ship war drama and the like. When I did research for my fics, I’d sometimes see shipping sites and theories where I didn’t always understand the logic of how certain conclusions were reached, but frankly, I didn’t much care and didn’t realize that Clerith vs. Cloti was such a touchy subject. I was peripherally aware that some sort great LTD war was waging, of course, but it didn’t really touch me. I stayed in my Cloti shipping/fic-writing lane and was probably a lot happier for it. And, to be honest, based on FFN’s listings for FF7, I felt like I always saw a bunch of Sephiroth/Cloud fics and thought that was just as popular as the more conventional ships.
Graduating college and entering “real life” pretty much ended my FF7 fanfic-writing journey. In the intervening years between college and the release of FF7R, I haven’t gone back to the OG too much. I’ve played almost all the Final Fantasy games since then, and I always enjoy getting my FF7 crew fix when I play the non-canon mobile games or the Kingdom Hearts franchise. But FF7 was a happy part of my teenage years, and I was content to think on it with sweet nostalgia.
Remakes, in recent experience (*cough cough* Disney, why?), have been hit or miss, with a lot of misses. It’s hard to strike a good balance between catering to nostalgia and delivering a fresh product, never mind the change in social mores through the decades. I was so afraid FF7R would screw up my memories, especially since I wasn’t the biggest fan of Advent Children. The graphics were great and the action scenes were fun, but the story felt like a let-down. Cloud, in particular, felt so different (and yes, moody) from where we left him after the OG. I understand now that a lot of his character motivation was better explained in the On The Way to a Smile novels, but back then, I just felt like AC came out of nowhere.
Btw, because I see this question a lot on other blogs when I’m lurking, I’ve ALWAYS thought that it was very clear in AC--even without reading anything else--that the reason for Cloud’s depression was due to guilt and not because he was pining for Aerith. The only reason I didn’t like his characterization in AC was because it felt like it came out of nowhere since AC is set 2 years after OG and by the end of the OG, he seemed to be in a pretty decent place mentally and emotionally. That being said, I can absolutely understand why some traumas resurface years after the originating incident and how times of peace might actually be worse because he is no longer solely focused on saving the world, but I was just surprised and a little bummed that this was the direction the devs chose to take AC at the time. Now that I’m older, I do better appreciate the complexities of Cloud’s mental state and the fact that they depicted a hero with lingering mental health issues is actually pretty awesome. I’m drawn to characters that have flaws--sometimes serious ones--but try their best anyway. Hence, why why Tifa Lockhart and Kate Beckett are some of my all-time favorites.
Anyhow, that didn’t stop me from pre-ordering FF7R, of course. I avoided reading any reviews as I didn’t want my first impressions to be swayed, and boy, was I happy that I went in mostly blind. That sense of awe really almost felt like playing the OG for the first time again, but somehow more. The combat system is incredibly fun and the world-building is nothing short of incredible. The variety and abundance of NPCs gives the game so much flavor and the locations have been rendered so well. As I’m going through areas like the Sector 7 train station and Wall Market and Aerith’s house, I can almost superimpose the layout from the OG in my head, but now it’s in 3D and so rich and full. It’s obvious that a lot of attention was paid to details, and I love all the head-nods and homages to the OG.
And oh, the characters!
This is the Cloud I’ve been wanting to see in glorious HD and the Cloud I remember from the original game: all awkward, dorky trying to be cool, socially inept, mentally unstable, abrasive-at-times, reluctant to act depending on who’s asking, wannabe hard-ass who’s actually a big softie inside Cloud. I remember reading an article a few years back about how the devs basically redid Cloud for the Remake because they wanted him to go back to his dorky roots--which ends up making him closest to his personality in the OG than his appearances in other franchises--and I was SOOOO incredibly happy to hear that. I was so sick of the way Cloud was constantly depicted as this cool, broody McBrood in his cameos when he was a pretty big dork in the OG. (Anybody remember him doing squats in the Highwind when Tifa says it’ll be lonely with just the two of them and Cloud responds that he’ll make enough noise to make up for it? Like I said: cute, but a dork.)
I WAS surprised by how comfortable and sweet and touchy (so very very touchy) the devs made him with Tifa from the beginning. That initial scene of Cloud being such a smooth operator giving Tifa the flower had my jaw-dropping and every single flirty interaction after that (and there are many) had my Cloti heart overflowing in shock and bliss. Throughout most of my years as a Cloti shipper, even though I believed Cloti was supported by canon and pretty clearly together, I was also under the impression--mistakenly or not--that Cloti was the minority ship. So for Square Enix to make it so blatantly obvious that Cloud is really into Tifa at such an early stage has been an unexpected gift.
Also, they’re just really hot together. (Clotiscrew tunnel--be still my heart!)
As for Tifa...oh, what wonderful character development we’ve already gotten for Tifa. Tifa has always been one of my all-time favorite characters ever since reading her character blurb in the OG game manual. Initially, as a child, it was because I saw so much of myself in her. She was outwardly bright and optimistic, but tended to hide all of her stronger feelings inside. She fought with her fists, and for someone who was a tomboy growing up who liked playing contact sports with the boys, I connected with her in a way that I had never been able to connect with other female protagonists who were primarily back-row specialists. (I also aspired to grow to her listed height of 5′4″, which alas, did not happen...lol).
I love how the Remake delves into more of Tifa’s moral conflict between the destruction that she causes as part of Avalanche and needing to do something to stop Shinra, and yes, even seeking revenge. They touched on this in the OG lightly, but the Remake really hammers it home. She’s perhaps the most conflicted character in terms of motivation in Part 1. That scene with the Shinra manager on the train is actually one of my favorite scenes of her because it highlights that tension. The elevator scene, if you opted for it instead of the stairs (or if you did one, saved, and reloaded to do the other one, like me), is also underrated in terms of how much it reveals about Tifa’s inner struggle.
On this point, I also appreciate that the Remake has the characters reflecting on the damage they’ve both indirectly and directly inflicted--the Avalanche team all do this to a certain degree. In particular, Jessie’s constant inability to figure out what she’d done wrong with the bomb to cause such a massive explosion and her remaining feelings of guilt during her death scene (”they were my victims” ouch!) were heart-breaking.
Aerith’s depiction was another pleasant surprise. I’ll be honest; I didn’t much like her in the OG. She was too pushy and willfully oblivious to the point of being mean at times. In the Remake, much of her sometimes too in-your-face playfulness was kept--perhaps still a little too much--but I appreciate the nuance that they gave her. The train graveyard scene tells the player that she didn’t have friends growing up, and I think that partially contributes to her lack of social tact at times. The other factor that gives her personality more nuance is the hint of special knowledge that affects how she interacts with the rest of the group. It gives her additional hidden motivation and adds to her mystery for new players while simultaneously pulling at the heartstrings for old players who get the impression that Aerith is somehow aware--to a certain, unknown extent--of her own fate.
I also appreciate that Aerith is more grounded as a real person than as some sort of revered being. I do blame AC for some of that. When you have the power to cure a fatal disease from the afterlife and send the dead back to life, it gets into some godlike territory. Maybe it’s a fair depiction of her powers as a Cetra, but I just get the feeling that Aerith herself wouldn’t really appreciate being made into this goddess-like figure. Remember that her character blurb in the original game manual implied that she was more interested in earthly things (i.e. the love triangle) than in exploring her own powers. I personally think that Aerith used the “love triangle” in the OG as a form of escapism from the weight of her burdens rather than genuine interest, and I just think she’d want to be thought of as a person rather than as a god. One of my favorite scenes for Aerith is when she and Cloud are traversing the rooftops and she slips on the ladder, letting out a simple, “Shit.” It humanizes her in a way that combats some of the ways she’s sort of been deified in the last 23 years. Also, Aerith wielding a folding chair like it’s WWE never fails to make me laugh. Overall, she just comes off as a more reasonably flawed and--as a result, to me--a more likeable character in the Remake, and I do very much like her now.
Barret is pretty much the exact larger than life character I imagined in my head, only somehow even better, and I really love how expressive and emotional his eyes and facial expressions are. His scenes with Marlene are truly the cutest thing ever. Red XIII is a big, furry ball of sass, and I need so much more of him in the coming parts (Cosmo Canyon still wrecks me to this day). The interactions between the Wedge, Biggs, and Jessie are incredible, and they really feel like people who’ve been friends and basically each other’s family for years. The Turks and Rufus are pretty much as cool as I imagined them in the OG.
There’s still so much more I haven’t even started touching on about the Remake, and I think that’s why I’m finally posting this now. I just can’t contain my love for this game any more, and I really really need a place to express myself. I don’t know if anybody is still reading, but I appreciate having the opportunity to finally gush about this game and franchise that I’ve loved so much for pretty much two-thirds of my life.

Why I like them
LOOOL ARE YOU A PSYCHIC !? I WAS WONDERING YESTERDAY NIGHT WHAT I WOULD ANSWER IF SOMEONE SENT HER TO ME ! She became my favorite Disney princess as soon as I watched the movie in theatre. She is beautiful with a great wardrobe, has amazing powers and she is a sister focused on sister love and protecting her family and people, yet greatly suffers from guilt, self-fear, and anxiety for these powers she hates at first and can't control and needs to learn how to like them and tame them, while accepting herself and finally find a way to stop locking away from people and her sister and leave her loneliness like she always thought. A very sad relationship that at least ends happily
Why I don’t
UUGH the shorts and sequel having her make new "BUY OUR NEW DOLLS" dress less and less logical with her power as time goes by, Disney wanting to fall for forced "progressive" fan demands as if their lifes depended on it (guys does she matter who she dates ? Or if she dates anyone at all ?) which would be bad for the studios if they keep listening to every whim to please everyone which is impossible, and the sequel turning her into some God befriending everyone, forcing her into a new song, and solve HUUUGE conflicts issues all by herself while forcing drama (OF COURSE SHE IS NOT DEAD THEY DON'T HAVE THE BALLS)- GOSH do I hate the franchise while loving the first movie, she will become a Mary Sue at this rate !
Favorite episode (scene if movie)
The whole Let it Go scene. Going from scared and hating herself to finally free and accepting herself, all freely and joyfully kicking out her responsibilities YET lying to herself about her freedom and hiding anxiety behind the lyrics and actions ("I'm never going back..." said with a sad look and a slight crack in her voice before going into self-protecting denial again and overly acting liberty again) while delivering some of the best CGI animation I had ever seen in a cartoon at least back then, one of my favorite songs ever, creating her iconic beautiful dress and us falling for her mock happiness of the moment... no matter what haters say, that's WHY this scene is legendary
Favorite season/movie
The first movie is one of my favorite Disneys, I don't care for the haters saying "NUUU IT'S LAME" only because they hated how every kid talked about it. How edgy you are. Sigh... I was hoping the second movie be dark, epic and even better...
Favorite line
Can I quote the whole Let it Go song for all the reasons I said above ?
Favorite outfit
Her first snow/frost dress will always be my favorite. Beautiful, sexy (CLOSETTED ME, ONCE AGAIN...), iconic, simple, much less cash grabby, more natural-looking on her and fitting
OTP
UGH I suppose I would have no choice but have to find her and that Honeymaren girl be canon if Disney wants to be PRRUGRESSIF and mediatized for the 3rd movie ? Seeing how everybody is ecstatic about them and acting like they are meant for each other and perfect and beautiful ONLY because they are girls while they would shit on them if they were a a boy and a girl accusing it of being bland shows that it could work, after all. SIIIIGH... When I think that while watching the first movie I was hoping Hans was actually good (shitting plot twist) and he and Elsa would end up together. Man how my hopes and dreams were destroyed in 3 minutes. Guess I ship her with nobody then
Brotp
She and Anna are 2 of the best sisters in fiction with their lot of fight and love, Elsa especially being both the eldest and vzry scared to hurt her again wanting to do everything for her to be safe even if it means being away from her, and Anna not scared by her and doing her possible for her to return and doing her best to comfort her and convince her there will always be a solution. They are freaking ready to die for each other !
Head Canon
She actually told Anna her memories had been changed by the trolls and told her everything, even the accident that changed everything. I hated how Anna never was told in canon
Unpopular opinion
Best clothes were first movie. Best hairdos were first movie. Best powers were first movie. Best psychological stakes and dilemmas were first movie. Best song(s) were first movie. She was at her best in the first movie and I hate to see everybody saying they prefer her in that super bland cashgrab sequel with her damn "Let it Go 2" song and how when I was looking for a gif there only were gifs of the sequel and her "BUY ME BUY MY NEW DOLL DESIGNS HEEHEE FASHION MONEY" looks that denatured her and gave her a new forced dilemma with a SUPER awfully exagerated conclusion in which she is literally some God or shit
A wish
The carnage to stop there, the first movie was true art but I don't want more cashgrab soulless "WOH BEAUTIFUL VISUALS" shorts and sequels
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen
Disney to stop what it is doing with her by making her a huge superhero a la Superman. A living element !? Ending a 30 years old war in 2 days !? Savinf a whole kingdom 2 times !? Taming wild element into "uwu friends" !? Completely giving up her past life and her people AND HER SISTER SHE ALWAYS WANTED TO PROTECT for being some messiah elsewhere !? (I know she never really liked being a queen I have nothing against her abdicating in fact I was happy Anna was finally queen... but LEAVING !?) And now planning to be the first LGBT Disney princess according to some rumors BUT not naturally at all but to show "URR DURR WE ARE PROGRESSIVE" and it will be bland and overly mediatized and a new forced ship à la Korrasami all for the sake of money !? Let her breathe dammit !!!
5 words to best describe them
Beautiful, self-conscious, scared, powerful, released
My nickname for them
Snow Queen

Happy 30th To Me
So I was thinking long and hard about what I would like to do on Tumblr to mark my 30th birthday. So I’ve decided to give you 15 opinions I have about the various fandoms I live around. Some may be unpopular opinions and some may be very popular opinions. This might get negative in some parts but hey, it’s my birthday and I’ll bitch if I want to. And it’s 15 opinions because it was around the age of 15 when I became aware of the existence of fandom.
This list is in not particular order. I’m just literally listing things off as they come to mind.
1. The Mummy (the Brendon Fraser one) is the best movie of all time with the greatest otp of all time. This movie has it all – action, adventure, romance, humor. And Rick and Evie are just the cutest couple ever.
2. I didn’t care about Derek from Teen Wolf. Derek stans, don’t construe this to mean I didn’t like Derek. He was fine. I just wasn’t invested in him as a character and it really only felt like he was there to be eye candy to give the adults something to look at.
3. I will never ship canon Sterek. I get why the fandom was upset about Sterek. We all get a little disappointed when our favorite ships don’t go canon. But it always came off as pretty obvious, to me anyways, that the show had no intention of delivering on Sterek. I think fanon Sterek is a lot of fun (if you adjust the age difference) but looking at Sterek on the show, there just wasn’t enough there for me to actually really get into the ship. They had some nice interactions but nothing that really lead me to believe there was a love story between them that needed to be told. Plus, with Derek being an adult and Stiles still a minor, I’m just not into that statutory thing.
4. My favorite Taylor Swift album is Fearless. A lot of people gravitate towards Red as Taylor’s best album and that it should’ve won a Grammy but that’s not my opinion. For me, Fearless is where it’s at. While the songwriting is amazing in Red, more often than not, when I have Taylor Swift on shuffle, I find myself skipping songs from Red the most. Red has a bunch of songs that are nice to listen to but they don’t necessarily make me want to get up and sing into my hair brush in the way that Fearless does. Fearless has great songwriting plus it inspires me to belt out the songs in the shower. It’s kind of the best of both worlds, really.
5. In the original Charmed, Prue was my least favorite sister. I’m sorry, but I thought she was a really shitty sister who through her entire character arc never really resonated with me.
6. I did not like Brie Larson as Captain Marvel. And this goes just beyond the whole popular trend of people not liking Brie. Personally, I thought she gave a very weak performance. And I legitimately do not care about Captain Marvel’s presence in the MCU.
7. I actually like the Star Wars prequels. Are they perfect films? Certainly not. But I think they very much do succeed in telling the story of the events that lead into episode 4 and in an enjoyable way. Sure, there’s a couple of plot holes here and there but they’re not really that big of a deal to me. It doesn’t hinder the enjoyment of the films for me.
8. I think Disney Star Wars sucks though. I’ve found these movies to be overall pointless and a waste of time. They’re literally just telling the exact same story 4-6 did, just in a less interesting way. They do nothing to enrich the Star Wars universe, the new characters are bland and boring and I can’t stand how all the male characters have to be written as incompetent in order to make the female characters shine (it’s such lazy writing). I’m all about having strong female characters but not at the cost of the male characters being lowered beneath them. At that point, those “strong female characters” aren’t actually strong, they’re just a caricature of a power fantasy.
9. Show!Malec in Shadowhunters is awful. Yup, I said it. They have a really shitty relationship and their endgame was not at all earned. Well, let’s be honest, no one’s endgame in the show was earned. Shadowhunters was just a badly written show in general and I don’t feel bad at all that it was cancelled.
10. I don’t understand the obsession with Good Omens currently. This show has taken over Tumblr practically and I guess I don’t understand why? I didn’t think the show was all that good. It was fun, I didn’t mind watching it, but I don’t have this desire to write meta about it and analyze every aspect of it. As a show, it was fine but ultimately, I felt I could move on from it relatively quickly. Maybe this is one of those things where you have to read the books to really understand.
11. Chuck is a really good and underrated tv series. And you should totally watch it.
12. I actually dislike Josie way more than I dislike Hope on Legacies. Surprising, I know, considering I’m always complaining about Hope but really, while Hope may be this Mary Sue kind of character, I just think Josie is really dull and predictable. Even though her self-entitled personality grates on my nerves, there is a potential for an interesting character. Selfless as a flaw though, is my least favorite character trait, it’s just cheesy, and it makes me cringe, so yeah, Josie makes me cringe.
13. Power Rangers is a fun franchise. I’m not ashamed to admit that I unironically enjoy this series. And this isn’t childhood nostalgia talking as I never got into Power Rangers as a kid. I didn’t start watching the franchise until I was an adult and I found that I actually kind of enjoy it.
14. I don’t want any romantic endgames for the SPN finale. I think the ship wars within the SPN finale are really dumb. And the way THAT faction behaves in regards to their ship, is really toxic and I don’t want their ship to happen specifically because I’m a vindictive person and I want karma to roll back on them.
15. Dean Winchester really is kind of the worst.
I’m fond of saying that with season 14, me and Dean just kind of had a falling out but really, the more I think about the show, the more I realize that there’s just no way season 15 could possibly redeem Dean’s character in my eyes in a way that I would be okay with it. But knowing how the writers typically write Dean, it’s probably futile to hope Dean will face any meaningful consequences and the writing probably will bend over backwards to absolve him of guilt like they usually do.

so because I like rambling about various things, lemme talk about Kingdom Hearts 3. spoilers and whatnot under the cut! it also got extremely long and rambly so I apologize for that in advance for anyone who wants to give following my thoughts a shot
so, like most other fans of Kingdom Hearts, I’ve been waiting for KH3 a long time. not the 13 years lots of people like to spout, like dumbasses, but definitely for a long while.
and, honestly? I have some mixed feelings about this. one of my friends already talked about how KH3 doesn’t feel like the “finale” he was looking forward to, and how it raised more questions than he had answered - which, valid, but seeing as I’ve gone deep into KHUX I don’t think I’m as confused as some people might be - and I understand and empathize with that notion. KH3 isn’t a grand finale, it’s a new fork in the road on our path throughout this crazy world.
would it have been better as a grand finale? I don’t know. I do feel like Nomura’s been biting off more than he can chew, especially regarding the specific ways he’s been tying some stuff together - through time travel?? - but on one hand, many characters’ stories did seem to reach an at least somewhat satisfying end. Axel, Roxas and Xion were finally reunited and can live on together; Isa joined them, showing Lea and Isa’s reconciliation; Terra, Aqua and Ventus are finally back together after a decade apart; and Eraqus and Xehanort were finally reunited. Sea Salt and Wayfinder Trios’ endings were the most satisfying, in my opinion, and it was kind of obvious that Nomura wanted to wrap these up for sure.
the rest? kind of set aside, to be honest. even our original trio, the Destiny Trio, kinda took a backseat at times - although Sora’s breakdown over being worthless without his friends was pretty great. like many others, I’m also displeased with the game’s handling of Kairi, which is too bad, because I’ve honestly grown fond of her over my years of growing out of my dumb “I hate fictional girls for breaking up my OTPs” phase. especially her interactions with Lea were particularly fun, and I kind of wish there had been... you know, more.
that’s my main complaint, really. that there wasn’t more. the story we’re told almost feels like a summary, like we’re supposed to assume things about the relationships between characters that we’re not... you know, shown. that’s been a problem when it comes to Sora and Kairi for ages; that their relationship isn’t really shown, ever, and Sora and Riku’s is explored much more. I feel more for Xion now than I did before, because with her you’re actually shown a lot of her internal conflicts and her hurt; while with Sora and Kairi, you’re just kind of supposed to assume that they care for each other a lot. probably based on the knowledge that he’s a boy and she’s a girl alone. “he was a boy, she was a girl... can I make it anymore obvious?”
the same can actually be said about the main antagonist, too. Xehanort. I get what was going on, but... I kind of wish there’d been more with him and Eraqus from their early days, before they had all their conflicts? you don’t really get to feel their conflicts so hard when the times before aren’t shown, like, at all. it would’ve been incredibly cool with a... you know, a prologue in a similar vein as KH2, where you get to play as Eraqus and explore your relationship with Xehanort before everything goes to shit. or adding an episode in the middle where you start following them for a while. it could’ve been done as a really cool parallel story thing, even more than their game of chess - which, don’t get me wrong, was really neat! I’ve always been a fan of chess symbolism, for whatever reason, and that was really cool! but there’s not a whole lot of substance to it, other than their fun, competitive spirit.
let’s just agree that KH3 has a lot of “tell, don’t show” problems. or, even worse, “assume, don’t show”. there’s not a whole lot of substance to the stories told in the game, because there’s still a lot of it missing, it feels like. I mean, the fact that Nomura rewrote the ending so many times (as he admits to in the preface to the artbook that was released with the Deluxe Edition) should probably hint to problems with coherent storytelling...
it is unfortunate, I must say. because I LOVE this game. gameplay alone was incredibly satisfying in ways I’ll get into later, but the way the story feels so.... you know, not finished, really does put down my joy a bit.
let’s not even talk about the epilogue. not yet. I’m so goddamned confused by Xigbar’s role in... well, everything. although I guess it makes a bit more sense for Xigbar to having been number II in the Organization now... knowing that he’s been around for centuries and is just here to wreak havoc, pretty much...
I’m all for the secret movie, though!!!! Sora’s finally going to Shibuya!!!!!! HELL YEA
anyway, got a bit off track. KH3 has a lot of storytelling issues, even with the disney worlds, which is real unfortunate because they’ve usually been pretty narratively solid. the developers’ obsession with exactly recreating some scenes really did pull down the quality of the storytelling, because the way they chose scenes to recreate didn’t consider the effects of the storytelling in the original movies... although recreating Let It Go with Sora, Donald and Goofy in it was an absolute power move and I’m still knocked on my ass from it.
anyway, the worlds with new stories - Big Hero 6, post-movie; Toy Story, in between 1 and 2; and Monsters Inc, post-movie - really were more narratively coherent, while the worlds following the original storylines - Tangled, Frozen and Pirates of the Caribbean - suffered from losing a lot of crucial scenes and (would you look at that!) relationship-building.
okay, but ENOUGH ON STORY CRITICISM! I think we can all agree that Nomura built himself too much to work with and may have gone a bit overboard with it, but honestly, overall? it was still pretty damn good! not entirely solid, but satisfying enough and emotionally engaging that I definitely enjoyed it as an experience! and the reunions of the Sea Salt and Wayfinder Trios brought me to tears for solid minutes at a time!! I’ve been very emotionally engaged in these kids’ specific storylines and their conclusions were more than I could have hoped for!
and like I already said, playing the game itself was THE most satisfying experience I’ve had in AGES! the game itself is so smooth, and just the fact that transitions from cutscene to gameplay were done SEAMLESSLY is enough to make me cry out of joy!
fight systems? great!! I love the way situation commands and such were handled, I love the drive forms connected to the keyblades themselves, I loved the boss fight patterns!
graphics? AMAZING!!! I had to stop and stare at stuff all the time, cry at the beauty of the different worlds, marvel over textures and lighting in different places, and WATER PHYSICS!!!! the game is so goddamned beautiful I can’t stop thinking about how amazing it all was, how many different kinds of scenery they handled and how well they did that! snow physics in Arendelle had me crying, lighting in Kingdom of Corona made me shout with glee, textures in the Caribbean made my jaw drop! underwater levels didn’t even suck!
minigames? honestly? I loved them. cooking is amazing fun (although I kinda suck majorly at cracking eggs), the 100 Acre Woods minigames may have been the same minigame rehashed twice but they were different enough to be fun - plus they’re only really necessary for farming for ingredients, which is pretty cool, sailing in the Caribbean was honestly fun, and the goddamned Verum Rex in Toy Box... *chef kiss* I LOVE it. I know lots of people dislike the multitude of minigames in KH games, and I do get it when it comes to sledding - the one I consistently had the most trouble with - but honestly? I don’t hate a single one of them!
lucky emblems? well. I haven’t really tried to discover all of them yet, but I have had the problem of a character going “look! a lucky emblem!” and me just not being able to find it anywhere a couple times. the concept of taking photographs is itself great, though!
and music? Yoko Shimomura is goddamned DELIVERING, again. the music is so beautiful in KH3, and the opening (with Skrillex) and ending themes by Utada Hikaru were great, as usual. I’ve cried to these songs more than I can count.
so, SUMMARY? the story has kinda gone out of Nomura’s hands, and storywise I still find KH2 to be the best at both telling a story and engaging you in it; but gameplaywise, the series has grown so much since the first game that I barely can’t believe I’ve lived to see the growth of the series as a whole? it’s kind of an amazing feeling knowing you’ve grown with a series like this, and I’m thankful for having been born the time I did so that I got to experience it! KH will always have a special place in my heart, and I will surely keep following this series to see where Nomura is taking it!
