IDK how to put this but there's this revolving Thought in my head about how some people often tend to be really dismissive of certain discretionary expenses that don't fall into their specific understandings of 'expected' expenses.
I don't drink. I don't go out to clubs or bars or anything. Now, some of this is depression and suburban life; I just don't have anyone to go to places with except my little sister. But the big thing here is that:
I don't drink alcohol. (I also don't drink soda, but since I do drink iced tea and juice and coffee, that's not exactly relevant.) The average American spends $30-$40/month on alcohol. So, after six months, that Average American has spent $180-$240 on alcohol.
I view alcohol as one of those things that I just... can recategorize. I don't drink or smoke, so I can reprioritize that money. I like having colored hair, so in my mind I can go 'well, people spend this much money on something I don't have any interest in, and consider that normal; I'll spend that same money on something I do have interest in." The salon is expensive, sure, but it's something I prioritize well over a similarly expensive thing; it's just all at once instead of over the course of months.
It's just a matter of what a person's priorities are. This also goes for things like gym memberships, acrylic nails, or... whatever, IDK what people consider normal for discretionary spending. Nice nights out with their partner, maybe. Sportsball tickets. All that.
What it comes down to is really that I'm wondering what it is about certain categories of spending that has people viewing them as inherently more acceptable.
Why is This Much Spent On Baseball Tickets more acceptable than This Much Spent on Taylor Swift Tickets.
Why is This Much Spent On Alcohol more acceptable than This Much Spent On Lattes.
Why is This Much Spent on Chipotle more acceptable than This Much Spent at Trader Joe's.
These things are all in the same family of costs. Baseball playoff tickets appear to be more expensive than TSwift. The alcohol is marginally cheaper than the coffee. The food is more or less on par, dependent on what you get.
So why is one usually more worthy of a side-eye or mockery?
(And it's not just 'white girls like it, so it's fine to make fun of,' no matter how common that phenomenon is.)

I am so utterly baffled by trends. I could never be in marketing.
I admit that I am not into things (which makes it very difficult to buy me gifts), so that's sort of a handicap right off the bat. But that's not to say that I don't ever buy or receive things that I love. I have a few traditional ceramic mugs in my office rotation that are favorites and bring me joy on every use (a couple were gifted, one was my own purchase).
But this article describes a secondary market for these water bottles ($240 for something that retails at $49.99), and it links to a tiktok where a person shows off their 20+ collection of these things? WHY
Having nice things is nice. Having things you like is nice.
But I am just so confused by conspicuous consumption and brand consciousness. What is it that compels people to do this? The brands and their insidious advertising do enough psychological damage to me already. I'm not virtuous for not buying more things. And I'm obviously not magically unaffected by marketing. But I don't feel compelled to collect or be trendy. So I just don't get it.
How are people out there just leaning into this shit so fucking hard? WHY

I'm holding my bowl up like Oliver Twist and respectfully saying "please, madam, I want some more reading and commenting Gaskell"
(This is just to testify my interest in your posting about it and is in no way meant to be a demand or a tantrum)
i would love to read more Elizabeth Gaskell! North and South was a delight, and I remember you saying Cranford had LM Montgomery vibes! She is definitely on the list. However, lately my life has flipped upside down then gone rolling down a hill as I chase it down frantically, so unfortunately I haven't had as much time to read as I would like. once i finally catch it and my breath I hope to dive into Cranford!

if you want to get into one piece I highly recommend the manga so when there's perv jokes you can kind of just unfocus your eyes for a second as you move them across the page and it's like white noise from a box fan and then you can start reading again like it never happened

IMPORTANT PSA FOR TUMBLR USERS
If you see a post that recommends something that you just plain can't do, be it for lack of money, lack of access, or often even disability:
Did you know?
Tumblr media
That's right! You're not the target audience! You can just scroll on by! The OP won't be offended that every single man, woman, nonbinary adult, and child isn't immediately running out to follow their universal edict and you and others with your restriction alone are not! You don't need to reblog with a bitter retort about how you can't do that!
Shocking, right? That's okay, take your time.

oh yeah the difference where all mordecai's pieces are still on his half of the board, and viktor foraying across that halfway point already....plus the just like expressive differences where viktor is probably just passing the time hanging out while mordecai is taking chess completely seriously in the 90th dimension
all i know about chess is where the pieces go and how they move and maybe a few bonus ideas, but that's it and i never learned to be good at it or anything so it's like, you never know when anyone with more knowledge would be like "yes that's unmistakably the configuration of a reverse forager's shimmy" or something

Well…just submitted my two weeks notice. Because they were very likely going to fire me in two weeks anyway.
It is surreal and also extremely stressful. I don’t have another position lined up and the job market is not friendly right now. Everything is up in the air.
I’m still amazed at how this company transformed from being a great place to work to being a horrible place to work. Consensus on my team is that they can’t afford to keep paying us, so they’re progressively making our lives worse until we quit (or give them reasonable cause to terminate us).
Very very scary…..but my mental health has been so so so so very bad.

i know people are saying that trinity's 10s record will always have an asterisk next to in bc shes had 5 years but
a) the gymnasts in the 2000s who got all those 10s did ncaa gym in a very very different era and as much as we bitch today about reputation scoring and not taking for little deductions here and there, many MANY of those 10s from dantzscher and hansen would not be getting 10s now lmfao, so they also warrant an asterisk, and
b) there were a few routines trin did before she finally broke that ceiling and got her first 10 that i felt deserved 10s relative to the way the routines in the lineup preceding her were being scored, and she was stuck in the 9.95/9.975 rut, and then they started flowing like water once she got those first few 10s and now she can almost expect to get a 10 from at least one judge if she puts up a routine with no objective (non-discretionary*) deductions
