Exposure was kept muted here for the sake of the small human figures lest these should become washed out. I had only need to bias the exposure darker by 1/3 stop as the Pentax would’ve already underexposed the image a bit.

This record ended up in my hands without much exercise of agency on my part. I’ve always hated looking like a rube, which means that there have been many times in my life I could’ve been spared a lot of needless toil by simply asking a barber/a punk/my partner/a teacher for advice, but decided to act like I knew instead. Early in my vinyl-acquiring days I visited Ottawa’s (locally) famously dyspeptic psych rock-centric record store Birdman Sound and I felt like I didn’t recognize a single title in the new release racks. This stamped me as a profound failure as a music-knower. I gingerly picked up a used copy of R.E.M.’s Fables of the Reconstruction and, when this didn’t earn a comment from the clerk, I felt compelled to wring something out of the interaction. So, in a rare move, I hesitantly asked if he’d had anything great come in lately and ended up nodding my way into going home with this one.

And wouldn’t you know it, but it’s probably one of the twenty or thirty most-spun albums in my collection, a record as reliable on the daily (and as pinkish) as the Himalayan salt I sprinkle my eggs with. I still don’t know much about Date Palms, whose core duo of Marielle Jakobsons (violin, flute, electronics) and Gregg Kowalsky (keys, electronics) released two LPs and an EP in the early 2010s, of which The Dusted Sessions is the last. They’re augmented here by bass, tanpura, pedal steel, and electric guitar, in a session allegedly recorded during the annular (ring) eclipse of May 2012.

Whether down to the ensorcellment of the astronomic event or the great sympathy between experienced musicians of good taste, The Dusted Sessions summons something special whenever I put it on. Call the vibe ambient Americana or western drone—the opening credits to Deadwood played on a CRT monitor at quarter-speed, perhaps—but I don’t find this music to be as explicitly nostalgic (or masculine) as all that. If anything, it has the music-as-healing-ritual sensibility of New Age music, as though a great dust storm had descended on Sedona, Arizona and we were given the chance to start again without the purple McDonald’s or reiki clinics for horses.
Generally, you don’t make good trance-like music without some affinity for mysticism, be it of the granola or fervently-wanking-chaos-magic variety. These songs, drifting, moaning violin over shifting sands of buzzing amps, are speaking to some spirit anyway, whichever one’s listening.

Male Date Palm - April 2022
Date palm trees are either male or female. The male trees are shorter and more massive, but I wouldn’t have know the difference if there weren’t a big sign in front of this male date palm tree identifying it as a male.
