#Data Loss

You're a reasonably informed person on the internet. You've experienced things like no longer being able to get files off an old storage device, media you've downloaded suddenly going poof, sites and forums with troves full of people's thoughts and ideas vanishing forever. You've heard of cybercrime. You've read articles about lost media. You have at least a basic understanding that digital data is vulnerable, is what I'm saying. I'm guessing that you're also aware that history is, you know... important? And that it's an ongoing study, requiring ... data about how people live? And that it's not just about stanning celebrities that happen to be dead? Congratulations, you are significantly better-informed than the British government! So they're currently like "Oh hai can we destroy all these historical documents pls? To save money? Because we'll digitise them first so it's fine! That'll be easy, cheap and reliable -- right? These wills from the 1850s will totally be fine for another 170 years as a PNG or whatever, yeah? We didn't need to do an impact assesment about this because it's clearly win-win! We'd keep the physical wills of Famous People™ though because Famous People™ actually matter, unlike you plebs. We don't think there are any equalities implications about this, either! Also the only examples of Famous People™ we can think of are all white and rich, only one is a woman and she got famous because of the guy she married. Kisses!"
Yes, this is the same Government that's like "Oh no removing a statue of slave trader is erasing history :(" You have, however, until 23 February 2024 to politely inquire of them what the fuck they are smoking. And they will have to publish a summary of the responses they receive. And it will look kind of bad if the feedback is well-argued, informative and overwhelmingly negative and they go ahead and do it anyway. I currently edit documents including responses to consultations like (but significantly less insane) than this one. Responses do actually matter. I would particularly encourage British people/people based in the UK to do this, but as far as I can see it doesn't say you have to be either. If you are, say, a historian or an archivist, or someone who specialises in digital data do say so and draw on your expertise in your answers. This isn't a question of filling out a form. You have to manually compose an email answering the 12 questions in the consultation paper at the link above. I'll put my own answers under the fold. Note -- I never know if I'm being too rude in these sorts of things. You probably shouldn't be ruder than I have been.
Please do not copy and paste any of this: that would defeat the purpose. This isn't a petition, they need to see a range of individual responses. But it may give you a jumping-off point.
Question 1: Should the current law providing for the inspection of wills be preserved?
Yes. Our ability to understand our shared past is a fundamental aspect of our heritage. It is not possible for any authority to know in advance what future insights they are supporting or impeding by their treatment of material evidence. Safeguarding the historical record for future generations should be considered an extremely important duty.
Question 2: Are there any reforms you would suggest to the current law enabling wills to be inspected?
No.
Question 3: Are there any reasons why the High Court should store original paper will documents on a permanent basis, as opposed to just retaining a digitised copy of that material?
Yes. I am amazed that the recent cyber attack on the British Library, which has effectively paralysed it completely, not been sufficient to answer this question for you.  I also refer you to the fate of the Domesday Project. Digital storage is useful and can help more people access information; however, it is also inherently fragile. Malice, accident, or eventual inevitable obsolescence not merely might occur, but absolutely should be expected. It is ludicrously naive and reflects a truly unpardonable ignorance to assume that information preserved only in digital form is somehow inviolable and safe, or that a physical document once digitised, never need be digitised again..At absolute minimum, it should be understood as certain that at least some of any digital-only archive will eventually be permanently lost. It is not remotely implausible that all of it would be. Preserving the physical documents provides a crucial failsafe. It also allows any errors in reproduction -- also inevitable-- to be, eventually, seen and corrected. Note that maintaining, upgrading and replacing digital infrastructure is not free, easy or reliable. Over the long term, risks to the data concerned can only accumulate.
"Unlike the methods for preserving analog documents that have been honed over millennia, there is no deep precedence to look to regarding the management of digital records. As such, the processing, long-term storage, and distribution potential of archival digital data are highly unresolved issues. [..] the more digital data is migrated, translated, and re-compressed into new formats, the more room there is for information to be lost, be it at the microbit-level of preservation. Any failure to contend with the instability of digital storage mediums, hardware obsolescence, and software obsolescence thus meets a terminal end—the definitive loss of information. The common belief that digital data is safe so long as it is backed up according to the 3-2-1 rule (3 copies on 2 different formats with 1 copy saved off site) belies the fact that it is fundamentally unclear how long digital information can or will remain intact. What is certain is that its unique vulnerabilities do become more pertinent with age."  -- James Boyda, On Loss in the 21st Century: Digital Decay and the Archive, Introduction.
Question 4: Do you agree that after a certain time original paper documents (from 1858 onwards) may be destroyed (other than for famous individuals)? Are there any alternatives, involving the public or private sector, you can suggest to their being destroyed?
Absolutely not. And I would have hoped we were past the "great man" theory of history. Firstly, you do not know which figures will still be considered "famous" in the future and which currently obscure individuals may deserve and eventually receive greater attention. I note that of the three figures you mention here as notable enough to have their wills preserved, all are white, the majority are male (the one woman having achieved fame through marriage) and all were wealthy at the time of their death. Any such approach will certainly cull evidence of the lives of women, people of colour and the poor from the historical record, and send a clear message about whose lives you consider worth remembering.
Secondly, the famous and successsful are only a small part of our history. Understanding the realities that shaped our past and continue to mould our present requires evidence of the lives of so-called "ordinary people"!
Did you even speak to any historians before coming up with this idea?
Entrusting the documents to the private sector would be similarly disastrous. What happens when a private company goes bust or decides that preserving this material is no longer profitable? What reasonable person, confronted with our crumbling privatised water infrastructure, would willingly consign any part of our heritage to a similar fate?
Question 5: Do you agree that there is equivalence between paper and digital copies of wills so that the ECA 2000 can be used?
No. And it raises serious questions about the skill and knowledge base within HMCTS and the government that the very basic concepts of data loss and the digital dark age appear to be unknown to you. I also refer you to the Domesday Project.
Question 6: Are there any other matters directly related to the retention of digital or paper wills that are not covered by the proposed exercise of the powers in the ECA 2000 that you consider are necessary?
Destroying the physical documents will always be an unforgivable dereliction of legal and moral duty.
Question 7: If the Government pursues preserving permanently only a digital copy of a will document, should it seek to reform the primary legislation by introducing a Bill or do so under the ECA 2000?
Destroying the physical documents will always be an unforgivable dereliction of legal and moral duty.
Question 8: If the Government moves to digital only copies of original will documents, what do you think the retention period for the original paper wills should be? Please give reasons and state what you believe the minimum retention period should be and whether you consider the Government’s suggestion of 25 years to be reasonable.
There is no good version of this plan. The physical documents should be preserved.
Question 9: Do you agree with the principle that wills of famous people should be preserved in the original paper form for historic interest?
This question betrays deep ignorance of what "historic interest" actually is. The study of history is not simply glorified celebrity gossip. If anything, the physical wills of currently famous people could be considered more expendable as it is likely that their contents are so widely diffused as to be relatively "safe", whereas the wills of so-called "ordinary people" will, especially in aggregate, provide insights that have not yet been explored.
Question 10: Do you have any initial suggestions on the criteria which should be adopted for identifying famous/historic figures whose original paper will document should be preserved permanently?
Abandon this entire lamentable plan. As previously discussed, you do not and cannot know who will be considered "famous" in the future, and fame is a profoundly flawed criterion of historical significance.
Question 11: Do you agree that the Probate Registries should only permanently retain wills and codicils from the documents submitted in support of a probate application? Please explain, if setting out the case for retention of any other documents.
No, all the documents should be preserved indefinitely.
Question 12: Do you agree that we have correctly identified the range and extent of the equalities impacts under each of these proposals set out in this consultation? Please give reasons and supply evidence of further equalities impacts as appropriate.
No. You appear to have neglected equalities impacts entirely. As discussed, in your drive to prioritise "famous people", your plan will certainly prioritise the white, wealthy and mostly the male, as your "Charles Dickens, Charles Darwin and Princess Diana" examples amply indicate. This plan will create a two-tier system where evidence of the lives of the privileged is carefully preserved while information regarding people of colour, women, the working class and other disadvantaged groups is disproportionately abandoned to digital decay and eventual loss. Current and future historians from, or specialising in the history of minority groups will be especially impoverished by this.

So deletion on computers doesn’t actually immediately destroy the information. Instead that information just gets marked as inaccessible and okay to overwrite. The information is still there. You can find it. But they can come back wrong if you revive them, because of the new data written over them.
Which makes me think… if the machine itself was sentient… would deletion even actually make them forget? would they dream of increasingly corrupted deleted memories? traumatic memories dumped into the trash, left to twist and corrupt as each byte of horrible data is overwritten. in the end is it even better to have deleted it? having fitful dreams where the faces become blacked out by red and green and static. you no longer can see yourself in it because the data that made visuals of you in it has been overwritten. the emotions associated twist until they are no longer recognizable.
you have accidentally deleted your most cherished memories. you struggle to bring them back, unfortunately having labored too long. they come back with overwritten emotions and crumbling video. 1s and 0s switched and scrambled by new data. you will never experience them as they were again. you can only recall a shattered and broken memory. you cannot help but curse yourself for having taken away your own happiness, accident or not

Verpex Review: Is it the Best Global Host For You?

Verpex Review: Is it the Best Global Host For You?
As a web hosting expert who has guided numerous clients in selecting the best providers, I’ve developed a keen eye for distinctive and impactful hosting services. At first glance, Verpex stands out not just for its competitive pricing and robust support, but significantly for its commitment to “real worldwide hosting.”
With server locations strategically spread across five continents, Verpex ensures that your website performs optimally, no matter where your visitors are located. This global reach, coupled with features like unlimited free migrations, free SSL certificates, and 24/7 expert support, positions Verpex as an appealing choice for businesses targeting a global audience. Intriguingly, they also offer a 45-day money-back guarantee, which is a testament to their confidence in the service they provide.
If you’re weighing the pros and cons of Verpex for your hosting needs, join me as I go into the details of their offerings, from performance metrics to customer support experiences.
Verpex Hosting Review
Verpex is a web hosting company that has quickly made a name for itself by offering a wide range of hosting services, including shared, cloud, and reseller hosting options. They stand out with their promise of “real worldwide hosting,” boasting server locations across five continents, which ensures low latency and better performance regardless of where your visitors come from. Their main features include unlimited free migrations, free SSL certificates, and 24/7 expert support.
I’ve had the chance to review them and I must say, they’ve impressed me with their robust support system and broad hosting offerings. They’ve earned a TrustScore of 4.8 after more than 600 reviews, and it’s clear why — customers genuinely appreciate what Verpex brings to the table.
What’s more, Verpex makes transitioning to their service a breeze with free migrations handled by experts. This was a game-changer for me, as it meant moving my site without the headache of downtime or data loss.

Verpex Rating – My Personal Take
When reviewing hosting providers, I like to adopt a systematic approach, comparing them across key areas to ensure fairness and transparency. This method helps differentiate between the numerous options available and highlights the strengths and weaknesses of each host. Here’s how Verpex measures up in my evaluation, scored on a scale from 1 to 5 across several essential categories:
Quality My rating Why I gave this score Features and Specs 4.8 Verpex’s offering of free migrations, automated SSL certificates, and a global server presence is impressive. However, I’ve given them a 4.8 because, while they excel, there’s always room for expanding even more advanced features. Prices 4.9 Verpex offers an exceptionally low entry price of just $0.60 per month for basic web hosting, which is quite competitive. However, I gave them a 4.9 because, despite this attractive rate, brands like Hostinger and Bluehost sometimes provide promotional pricing that can be slightly lower, catering to those with the most stringent budget constraints, especially after considering renewal prices. Performance Stats 4.7 Verpex boasts impressive performance backed by the latest technology like NVMe SSDs and AMD EPYC CPUs, ensuring quick server responses. I gave them a 4.7, acknowledging that while they are incredibly fast, the absolute fastest speeds in the market are slightly quicker. Ease of Use 4.6 Verpex makes it easy for both novices and experienced users with their cPanel interface and streamlined processes. I’ve given them a 4.6 as the vast array of options might initially overwhelm newer users. Customer Support Guarantee 4.8 The 24/7 customer support provided by Verpex is top-notch, with a 99.95% case resolution rate. They receive a 4.8 because, although nearly perfect, peak times can see slight delays.

Verpex Performance Tests
When evaluating Verpex’s performance, I focused on several critical metrics that impact user experience and SEO: speed, uptime, and server response time. For this review, I tested a website hosted on Verpex’s platform using tools like GTMetrix and Uptime Robot to provide a rounded perspective on how they stack up against the competition.
Verpex boasts an impressive uptime of 99.95%, ensuring that your website remains accessible to visitors almost continuously. During my month-long monitoring period, their uptime promise held true, providing a reliable hosting environment crucial for maintaining visitor trust and search engine rankings.
Testing with GTMetrix revealed a server response time (TTFB) of approximately 400ms. While not the fastest on the market, it is certainly within a range that promises good performance for most websites, especially small to medium-sized businesses. This decent response time contributes positively to overall user experience, reducing bounce rates and improving page views.
The website’s loading time averaged around 1.2 seconds for a basic WordPress site with optimized images and minimal plugins.
Verpex Customer Support
Verpex’s commitment to exceptional customer service is evident through their comprehensive support system. They offer a variety of support channels, ensuring that help is always just a click or a message away. Here’s a closer look at the different ways you can receive assistance:
Live Chat and Email Support
Available 24/7, Verpex’s live chat,  phone and email support response times were impressively quick. Within minutes, I was connected to a knowledgeable support representative who provided clear, concise answers to my queries.
Knowledge Base
For DIY troubleshooters, Verpex offers a well-organized knowledge base. It covers a broad range of topics, from basic account management to more complex server-related issues. This resource is invaluable for those who prefer self-service support, providing detailed articles that are easy to follow.
YouTube Channel
Verpex extends its support through visual content on its YouTube channel. This platform features tutorial videos that guide users through various processes, such as setting up email accounts, managing cPanel, and installing applications via Softaculous. These videos are especially helpful for visual learners and those new to web hosting.
Blog
The Verpex blog is another resource where users can find valuable information on web hosting, SEO, and website management. The blog posts are not only informative but also current, discussing the latest trends and best practices in the industry. This is a great tool for continuous learning and staying updated with new developments.
Support Tickets
For more complex issues, Verpex allows users to submit support tickets. However, accessing the ticket system requires you to log in to the client area, which means you must have an account. Once logged in, you can easily submit a detailed query and expect a comprehensive response tailored to your specific situation.
Verpex Security Features
When it comes to hosting, the security of your website and data is paramount. Verpex understands this and has implemented robust security measures to protect its clients. One of the standout features of Verpex is their comprehensive use of Imunify360, an advanced firewall and malware protection solution. This system provides round-the-clock security, actively preventing unauthorized access and quickly neutralizing threats.
Every website hosted through Verpex benefits from a complimentary default AutoSSL. This means as soon as your site goes live, it is automatically secured with a free SSL certificate. The SSL installation is managed hourly, ensuring that your site remains secure without any manual intervention required from you. This automated process not only secures data transmitted between your website and its visitors but also boosts your SEO ranking, as search engines favor HTTPS-enabled sites.
Verpex Website Builder
Verpex does not provide its own proprietary website builder, but this doesn’t detract from its appeal, especially for those who are comfortable using more widespread platforms like WordPress. Achieve Composure From A Salesforce Data Loss Event
Tumblr media
If you have never been the recipient of an interruption of business due to a data issue, or worse, a catastrophic failure, count yourself lucky, as It has been said that it's only a questions of 'when' an event like this will take place. For those who have planned carefully for such an occurrence, these folks will have the best chance of success for ensuring their data gets back to normal operating procedure in the smallest amount of time. Like any emergency preparedness plan, there exists many facets to ensure the process works when needed, with the plan itself being just the beginning. If your enterprise is gifted with not only a plan, but the preventative maintenance to reduce or eliminate a data-loss, you will have not only the greatest chance of recovery, but perhaps also the confidence to act quickly when needed. No Plan? Plan To Fail Salesforce for decades have proven that their downtime and redundancy are top-shelf among CRM providers, which have remained a very low occurrence. This reason alone ranks at the top of the stack as to why some firms have no backup / recovery option, but it doesn't have to be so as even some form of data retention is better than no protection at all. If there were no ongoing changes to your Org, a non-recovery plan may be well-founded as the recovery time of such outages to the Core Platform (i.e. Sales Cloud / Service Cloud) are rare, and at all times, the communication from the Salesforce team has been swift. However, there are many other, more likely reasons as to why a Data Recovery / Business Continuity plan should be adopted. Count The Ways While the chances of a Salesforce Platform outage itself is low, other, more likely causes should be the driving force to prepare today for an unlikely event tomorrow. Consider the possibilities that may come from internal issues such as a power-loss, brute-force attack or a code-deployment with inaccurate or missing data. While these events may have even a slight possibility of happening, you will instantly see the benefit of having prepared ahead of time. Take for instance a data-load that goes awry where financial data is affected due to a single row that is off by 1 decimal place. It could take hours (possibly days) of deciphering the root cause, especially where an integration path exists.
Tumblr media
It is at these times when a backup solution will be a great asset (and antidote) to get your data back to equilibrium. It's no different than having an insurance policy with a large, tangible asset when a disaster strikes, as without it, the costs alone could set you back more than what you bargained for. With a plan at the ready which includes an automated and recurring Backup and Restore regimen, you get not only peace of mind when data-issues occur, but at the same time enforce compliance and data retention. By storing your data in a location outside of your premise, you are automatically following a best-practice that for years to come will be relevant, especially if your firm has requirements for safeguarding your data for a specific length of time (i.e. 7-10 years). The Only Way To Carnegie Hall - Practice With your documented plan in place, your enthusiasm for overcoming threats or recovering from unintended data loss should be at an all-time high. But what happens if an issue occurs a few days after your newly minted plan? This gets us to the final critical step in your process which is the testing phase, and while it takes just a small amount of effort, it may surprise you how often it's not practiced. With the majority of time spent on the plan itself, going through a mock-test will bring 2 things to light. Identification of gaps in your documentation, and clarity of the restore process. Practiced regularly (i.e. each quarter), you can be confident that when issues occur, you have the knowledge to proceed with a cool head having gone through the entire process. It's the same routine that firefighters adopt on a daily basis, and if they regularly perform drills in an effort to save lives, practicing your plan every 3 months is a small price to ensure your team is alert and ready for any data issue that comes your way. In short, don't wait for the problem to show its teeth… assume it will happen by being proactive.

The Importance of File Backup in Preventing Data Loss
Tumblr media
In today's digital age, where virtually everything relies on technology, the importance of file backup cannot be overstated. From personal memories to critical business documents, our reliance on digital data is ever-growing, making it imperative to safeguard these files against the risk of loss. Whether it's due to hardware failure, accidental deletion, cyber-attacks, or natural disasters, the consequences of losing valuable data can be devastating. Hence, implementing a robust file backup strategy is not just recommended but essential for individuals and businesses alike.
Protection Against Hardware Failures:
One of the most common reasons for data loss is hardware failure. Hard drives, SSDs, and other storage devices are prone to malfunctions over time. A sudden crash or failure of these devices can result in the loss of all stored data. By regularly backing up files to an external storage device or cloud service, individuals and businesses can mitigate the risk associated with hardware failures. This redundancy ensures that even if one storage medium fails, the data remains accessible from another source.
Guarding Against Accidental Deletion:
Accidental deletion of files is another prevalent cause of data loss. Whether it's mistakenly deleting an important document or formatting a storage device without proper backup, such actions can lead to irreversible consequences. Having a backup of files ensures that even if data is accidentally deleted, it can be easily restored from a previous backup point. This not only provides peace of mind but also saves valuable time and resources that would otherwise be spent trying to recover lost data.
Defense Against Cyber-Attacks:
With the rise of cyber threats such as ransomware and malware, the security of digital data has become a significant concern. Cyber-attacks can encrypt or corrupt files, making them inaccessible unless a ransom is paid. In such scenarios, having a recent backup of files becomes invaluable. It enables individuals and businesses to restore their data without succumbing to the demands of cybercriminals. Additionally, maintaining offline backups disconnected from the network can prevent them from being compromised during a cyber-attack.
Preparedness for Natural Disasters:
Natural disasters like floods, fires, earthquakes, and storms can wreak havoc on physical infrastructure, including computers and storage devices. In such catastrophic events, the loss of digital data can be catastrophic for both individuals and businesses. By regularly backing up files to remote servers or geographically distant locations, users can ensure that their data remains safe even if their primary location is affected by a natural disaster. Cloud-based backup solutions offer an added advantage by automatically syncing files to secure servers, providing an extra layer of protection.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the importance of file backup in preventing data loss cannot be emphasized enough. Whether it's safeguarding against hardware failures, accidental deletion, cyber-attacks, or natural disasters, a robust backup strategy is essential for ensuring the integrity and availability of digital data. Individuals and businesses must adopt a proactive approach to backup their files regularly, preferably using multiple backup methods for added redundancy. By prioritizing file backup, users can minimize the risk of data loss and safeguard their valuable information for the long term. Remember, when it comes to data, it's not a matter of if, but when, it will need to be restored from a backup.
