Foods of Thedas: Master Post
Here is the very, very long and complete list of all dishes, ingredients, and drinks in Thedas as of Tevinter Nights.
This compiles all the canon posts. My headcanons are separate from this list to avoid any confusion but you can find it linked along with the other individual posts below.
Like in the individual posts, the list has the country of origins next to each item and any relevant information. Such as ingredients, use, notes, or trivia. For the canonically suggested foods and drinks I list what their real world uses are for your reference as to what they might be used for in Thedas.

just some thoughts (and things that stood out to me) on the latest batch of Dragon Age official cookbook preview pages (first batch, thoughts on those), under a cut in case anyone would rather not see cookbook spoilers :) -
thoughts:
it's neat to see some veggie recipes in there
I was hoping that the cookbook would contain recipes from across Thedas, from different nations and groups/factions, not just a few. and in the preview pages you can see recipes/food from Antiva, Rivain, Seheron, Nevarra, Anderfels, the Dalish, the dwarves, Tevinter, the Avvar, Chasind, etc, which is neat.
in my post on the first lot of preview pages, I said that the thing I'm most excited about about the cookbook is the new snippets of lore scattered throughout, and it looks like this theme continues. for example, I don't recall knowing this factoid before about Nevarran cultural approach to food/cuisine: "For Nevarrans, food is as much a feast for the eyes as for the mouth"
it's nice to see references to different characters from all three main games in the book, such as Sera, Alistair, Fenris, and Merrill.
in my post on the first lot of preview pages, I wondered if the recipes were written/compiled by one person, someone who was like Thedas' culinary world's answer to Genitivi. and I feel like this isn't too far off the case. Genitivi travelled all throughout Thedas gathering lore and information and writing about what he saw. in the Introduction page of the cookbook, we learn that the book author Devon set out to travel all across Thedas to sample and study the foods of the world, and they have now written this book and compiled these recipes based on their journeys and experiences.
I've made nettle soup irl from nettles that I foraged myself, so I'm excited to try making it again using the recipe from this book ◕‿◕
I searched bits of yet otherrr preview pages of the cookbook that are available elsewhere, and in these pages+those pages at least, I can see no mention so far of Serault/Seraultine food q.q but like I said, that wish is extremely niche to me as a person LOL so that's ok hh
Some other things:
First, we have 2 new mentions of Solas, beyond the egg joke from the first batch of preview pages. I have transcribed them here:
Mention 1) - "[...] brought on by the changing of the seasons, but they also ensure that long journeys away from home are possible. Imagine how difficult it would be for Dalish hunters to bring back meat the clan is depending on if they have to be back for supper every night - or, worse, hunt on an empty stomach! This spiced jerky ensures that all Dalish hunters are well provisioned whenever they set out on a hunt so that no one, either the hunter or the clan at home, must go hungry. I do wonder, given how well this food keeps, whether it's used in offerings made by certain Dalish elves to Fen'Harel. Although his shrines are usually located well outside of Dalish camps, I can't imagine that leaving behind food that'll readily spoil is good practice, especially if the prevailing opinion about these shrines is to avoid them. Besides, he is the Dread Wolf. If any god would enjoy a good piece of jerky, it should be him!" [text seems to accompany Spiced Jerky recipe]
I thought this one was especially interesting given the reference to "certain Dalish elves" making offerings to Fen'Harel. 👁️ (jerky food treats for dogs is a thing tho hhh) It would be fun if this was a reference to the "Fen'Harel cultists"/Agents of Fen'Harel and their activities (not literal offerings perhaps but 'offerings' 🤔 supply network?). or just as interestingly, we know that "In the past, however, it is said that the Dread Wolf was called upon by elves for aid and advice in various matters, but always with a price. In spite of this, offerings of thanks were often given for Fen'Harel's help as he did follow through on promises of aid, if in an unorthodox manner. Since the fall of Arlathan, however, this practice has understandably fallen out of favor as a rule", and we also know that "Furthermore, some Dalish elves still erect shrines to him and make offerings; perhaps as a form of appeasement, but still a sign that the fearful wariness in which the Dread Wolf is held by modern-day elves is not absolute" [from Offering to the Dread Wolf in Landmarks on the Plains]. this reminds me of the other elves in other places which "yet linger" (Solas/Abelas conversation).
Mention 2) - "Hearth Cakes. Some lovely comfort food, courtesy of the Dalish. These cakes are traditionally made over the hearth on an iron griddle or skillet (hence the name). While the original recipe calls for halla butter, I've found that other types of butter work just as well. The resulting dough stays moist on the inside, but crisp and flaky on the outside. In other words: perfect. Although hearth cakes can be made plain, I recommend adding some dried fruit into the mix. Cranberries, raisins and currants all work. I believe the Dalish simply use whatever is on hand. Of course, if you're feeling a bit mischievous, you could mix in some hot peppers instead. Just be prepared to be cursed as loudly and vehemently as Fen'Harel, the Lord of Tricksters himself!" [text seems to accompany Hearth Cakes recipe]
Also -
there are at least two mentions of sus unidentified/mystery meat hhh
the 'canon worldstate' that the cookbook is set in is in a time period after the new Divine is crowned in DA:I (so it's likely been penned in-world post-DA:I. before or after Trespasser I wonder?). in the cookbook worldstate also, the Divine's identity is given as Cassandra, the monarch of Ferelden is given as Alistair, Hawke's personality is given as Diplomatic, and they must have been a warrior or rogue, because this world's Varric met Bethany, so Carver would have died in the DAII prologue. is this the 'default' worldstate BioWare will use for DA:D in the case of no import/Keep-setup of choices? also, the Inquisition and the Inquisitor seem to be mentioned in the present tense.
in the photo for Rivaini couscous, one of the props is the Alistair pendant and letter item from the Gear Store (20% off discount code if you want one can be found here). is there meaning in this, is it random/aesthetic dressing for the photo setup, or is it simply merch placement/promo?
the in-world writer of the book, Devon, seems to be a hero fan, of the 3 main PCs and their companions 🥺 going by the way they write about them and how they partially inspired their food quest and how they know trivia about them. which I just think is so cute. and this leads to the next point which is simply
❗ Hero of Ferelden, Champion of Kirkwall and Inquisitor mentions
I'm also 🥺 over how Devon seems to have been the child of the chef/cook and/or the kitchen boy, girl or child at Castle Cousland. little things like this make the world feel more alive and the call back is nice. it also makes me wonder how old Devon was during the time when Duncan was recruiting the HoF, if they were born by then at all.
the recipes also seem to span our time through the series. for example, "Cacio e pepe" I think was first mentioned in Tevinter Nights. meanwhile, Chasind Sack Mead was a gift item all the way back in DA:O.
the map in the background of page 8 looks like it's the one from Tevinter Nights.
there's a recipe for Hearth Cakes in World of Thedas. we can see from the contents page of the cookbook that there is a recipe for Hearth Cakes in the new cookbook too. Sera's Yummy Corn, for instance, also appears in both. I wonder how much overlap there is between the food section in WoT and the new cookbook? are they straight copy-pastes of that content, or new versions/Devon's take [etc] of these foods? hopefully the latter ^^ from the 'yet other bits of pages elsewhere' that I've seen, it looks like the latter i.e. not copy-pastes of WoT, but without the full book to compare side by side with WoT it's a bit hard to tell.
characters mentioned in the book, from what I can see (there may be more): Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana, Loghain, Sten, Zevran, the HoF's mabari (I love that they didn't forget Dog hh), Anders, Bethany, Fenris, Merrill, Isabela, Varric, Sebastian, Cassandra, Iron Bull, the Chargers, Sera, Cole, Vivienne, Dorian, Solas, Cullen, Josephine, Krem, plus the 3 main PCs ofc.

Updated: 2023/12
I originally posted this on my old blog. Since posting that, I've found other foods, drinks and ingredients. As of now this list is updated with everything found in media released as of Oct 2023.
Like the original, this is still a very long post that contains all canonical desserts, dishes, drinks, ingredients, and sauces. Unlike the original, I could not list canonically suggested food and ingredients, nor every codex, item, letter, ect in the sources. Because it was too long. I did add them to the individual post.
Like in the individual posts, the list has the country of origins next to each item and any relevant information. Such as ingredients, use, notes, or trivia. For the canonically suggested foods and drinks I list what their real world uses are for your reference as to what they might be used for in Thedas.

DLC: Jaws of Hakkon - Frostback Basin, Stone-Bear Hold Avvars - Part 2
Tumblr media
Although it is often referred to as a single entity, the Avvar are actually groups of small tribes who share their beliefs and culture but otherwise operate independently of each other. They were part of the tribes of the Alamarri who crossed the Frostback Mountains in -1222 TE [more than a thousand years before the creation of the Tevinter Imperium] to escape what legend says it was a "shadow goddess".
In this post, the following topics inside the DLC are treated
Stone-Bear Hold: houses and statues
Trials and Justice
Miscellaneous objects
The Hakonnite and Avvar’s understanding of their Gods
[This is part of the series “Playing DA like an archaeologist”]
[Index page of Dragon Age Lore ]
Stone-Bear Hold: houses and statues
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Hold has two entrances; one through the Swamp, which path is guided by statues of a variation of the Keepers of Fear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This entrance guides us to the cliffs where we see more avvar statues made on stones over the sea, in this case a variation of a Keepers of Fear. It’s curious they are giving their backs to the sea, and the scream is directed to the Hold.
Tumblr media
The other entrance of the Hold is placed at the south of the map. In this part, we find people carving the stone, creating a standard Keeper of Fear and, for the first time, we see a statue of Korth, the Mountain-Father.
Tumblr media
The throne of Thane is very tribal and humble. We find these monoliths with ropes, that are easily seen all over Ferelden [Crestwood], and behind the throne, a big statue of a Dwarf with long limbs, probably as a tribute to the presence of Dwarven lineage among the Avvar [and other descendants of the Alamarri like the Chasind]. There is a spooky pottery beside the throne too.
Tumblr media
In another house, we see a room for celebration such as a marriage. It’s particularly cosy and well decorated.
Tumblr media
Inside this celebration room, we find a bard who explains to us the legend-marks, the names that replace the "family name” of the Avvar. These marks work like a title related to their actions or to an iconic aspect of a person.  We also can infer the avvar surname system: it’s basically a way to say of who you are daughter or son. Men use *name_of_parent*-sen while women use *name_of_parent*-sdotten.
Tumblr media
The rest of the houses look like ibero-celt houses, circular buildings with a central fire in them.
Tumblr media
Visiting some houses where they work on the storage of food of the hold, we trigger codices such as The Naming of Stone-Bear Hold, where the legend of the stone-bear hold is explained: time ago, the people of this hold had lost hope in finding food and shelter during a hard winter, but one of them saw a great bear that guided him to his place. When the person inspected the bear closely, he realised it was made of stone, thus the name of this hold.
Another codex triggered in a house that was curing meat is On Avvar Cuisine where it's explained the hard work Avvar have to do all year in order to preserve and storage a good amount of food for the winter. They live the rest of the year preparing for the next winter in an endless, hard-to-endure cycle. Despite this rush, they always leave high-quality food offerings to the spirits around the hold, because they protect them.
Tumblr media
Curiously, on top of the hold there is a statue that in Emerald Graves: The open we have found with the unreliable landmark called The guide, telling us that this could potentially be a representation of Falon'Din, but I doubt it. We know that Falon'Din being the "guide" was a posterior misinterpretation of the Dalish. The truth is that we don't have a more or less reliable source to know what or who this statue represents beside this codex.
By the end of the Hold we find the house of the Augur, which I talked about in the first part of this post, and the Trader Helsdin’s house, quite a peculiar, funny character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trader Helsdim is the one responsible for the codex Mysteries of the Frostback Basin that we collected all over the Basin. Pretty much like his codex, his house is a mess of magical glyphs, items, papers, portraits, and cheese. He feels to me like a joke of Bioware, to laugh at the most wild theory-crafters of the fandom. “This is how you look like, people”, Bioware seems to say, lol.
We know that the older trader taught him how to read, write, and trade with lowlanders, and this man used these skills to get lost in conspiracy theories, lol.
 Trials and Justice
Tumblr media
With an offering to the battle master, the Inquisitor can participate in the Hakkon's trials.
As the Avvar have these trials, their gods [aka spirits] see them. Solas explains us that in this way, spirits are taught to help the avvar by giving them small improvements in these trials that they could be vital in real conflicts: such a second of strength or a glimpse into the future to see a deadly attack that can be avoided.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beside the trial arena we find this variation of Keepers of Fear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The arena for the trial of Hakkon is surrounded by four statues of Korth, the mountain-father, observing the combat from the four cardinal directions.
Tumblr media
These trials are sometimes used to solve petty conflicts in the community. When there is a fight, a Thane can determine to settle things with tests. Tests of the Lady of the Skies is a contest of climbing, the test of Korth, mountain-father, is to fight with verses, and for the test of Hakkon, is a non-lethal fight with blunted weapons.
 Miscellaneous objects
Interesting miscellaneous objects can be found in Skyrim after playing this DLC  and picking the Avvar decoration:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have this statue of an owl, representation of the Lady of the Skies. I find interesting in her design the ring around her head: small little spikes that may be related or may have inspired artistically other symbols in the game: the thorns that we have seen many times in vines, which have elven influence [after all, the Avvar have a strong elven influence in their culture if we can consider the tale of  Tyrdda Bright-Axe Path as more or less reliable with respect to her lover of leaf-like ears],
Tumblr media
or could be an inspiration of a sun, later taken to accompany the figure of Andraste in a cult that will turn out to be the main religion of the land.
Tumblr media
This piece of art also appears when you activate the Avvar decoration inside the Skyhold. If anything, it looks like a branch-hand holding a bowl.  It gives me the impression of a sylvanian hand.
Tumblr media
And the last decoration: a very detailed representation of Korth, the Mountain-Father. His face, so filled with beard, and his body, short and thick, makes me see a dwarf in him, which would make sense with the dwarf influence that the Avvar have. In another post I will compare the common roots or similarities that Korth has with Elgar’nan and with The Stone / Titans.
Tumblr media
Also, as a very curious detail that I’m not sure how much I can trust, is seen in the Arena of Hakkon: during combat, some avvar warriors use these tower shields. This could mean nothing, but I think this drawing reflects a bit of elven influence that the Avvar have [maybe because Trydda’s lover has a deeper mark in the Avvar culture, or maybe because the Avvar have always been too related to spirits, learning from them, and Elves and spirits have a long History in common as well]. The Avvar shield shows a ram with horns depicted in a similar style that the elvhen golden halla.  The animals on the shield have “google” eyes, which are similar to some of the eyes we found in those elvhen murals as well. They even have a “mark” that could be considered a rudimentary vallaslin or even a tear-like mark.
Tumblr media
We also find this statue of a Dwarf with long limbs. A bigger one is present in the main chamber of the Thane throne. As I said before, it makes sense considering that the avvar have dwarven lineage in their blood. As inhabitants of mountains, Avvar also have some relationship with the stone, reflected in their respect to Korth, the Mountain-Father.
The Hakonnite and Avvar’s understanding of their Gods
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When we meet the thane of the hold, we have a lot of information about the Avvar, the Thane herself, the Hakkonites, and the way Avvar see their gods. This information can be summarised as:
Svarah Sun-Hair was born as Svarah Janesdotten, and her legend-mark ended up being Sun-Hair because she fought with her hair on fire once.
Their hold-beast is important for their hold, the hold draws strength from it. When it gets sick and dies is an ill omen. This creature ties them to the gods/spirits.
The hold-beast is free to roam everywhere like the Avvar are, because it’s considered kin. This implies that Avvar are a culture free of slavery.
Avvar respect their oaths and don’t break them easily, but they can find some holes in any promise that can take advantage of. When their promise is broken, they try to fix it with gifts.
The hakkonites’ current thane is Gurd Harofsen, who lost too many of his hold to the Darkspawn during the Fifth Blight, so he became obsessed with fighting.
Hakkonites only care about the god Hakkon, they gave their back to the rest of the Avvar gods. This is a similar situation to the one we saw in DA2 [Mark of the Assassin] with that cult of the Lady of the Skies: a tribe sometimes wants to focus entirely on one god, and something terrible happens later. In the case of DA2, the whole tribe disappeared, although it is implied that eagles saved them from the Tevinter invasion and slaughter. In this case, the Hakkonites end up disappearing as well due to the excess of fighting.
Hakkon, god of war and winter, is not evil. He represents the times for fighting.
Tumblr media
After some time showing good-will, the thane of the hold trusts us with a truth that seems to be common knowledge for her: What the Hakkonites are trying to do is to free the god who was bind to a mortal form ages ago, and bring war to the lowlands, which is what we learnt that Ameridan fought against. They did it in the past, and in doing so, the "avvar lost Hakkon".
When a god/spirit is bound to mortal form, it cannot hear prayers nor speak with the augur. He was felt to the Avvars as if he had vanished, instead of dying and returning in the typical cycle that spirits follow.
There is a deliberated resemblance with the silence of the Old Gods for Tevinter or the silence of the Evanuris [who had a spirit-like nature] for their first priests, such as we read in The Lost Temple of Dirthamen. There is a lot of potential in this DLC to tell us why the Gods of the past went silent.
Tumblr media
The avvar would not fight a war against lowlands unless there is a need for resources.
If the hakkonites succeed in freeing Hakkon, they would have freed a great beast. She explains that the wars, when they are needed, should be done without the intervention of gods/spirits.
Avvar consider that the gods/spirits belong to the land of Dreams, they don’t take mortal form.
Curiously, we can discuss that the Lady of the Skies took mortal form as Tyrdda’s lover according to Tyrdda Bright-Axe Path. Strangely, Svarah seems to dismiss this aspect of the tale.
As a note of my own interpretation, I think it’s worthy to look for the truth of the past understanding the Avvar and not dismissing their knowledge just because they are humans, the last race that appeared in Thedas. After all, Avvar are too related to spirits and elves, Avvar is an elven word, meaning our taking [check the wonderful explanation here] If the elves and the spirits lived and coexisted in a pre-Veil time, the avvar are living with the spirits and coexisting with them in analogous way to the elves but in the Waking World [having been guided by an Elf/spirit/their own goddess of the Skies]. The fact that they allow the possession of child mages gives them access to a lot of knowledge lost in the past that only the creatures of the Fade still remember and reflect. For this alone, their knowledge should be taken into consideration to perceive how much of it has been twisted along the ages or merely misunderstood in the translation spirit-human.
Honestly, anyone who is interested in a deeper understanding of the Avvar, go check posts like [this] or [this] or read Avvar History Reconstruction in AO3. Ammocharis’ work is very detailed in terms of naming sources, which is something I appreciate a lot, and anyone who reads this blogs probably will enjoy as well.

Thedas Cuisine Project: Dalish Smoked Gavulan
Gavulan is the Dalish word for trout. Trout is a main-staple fish for many Dalish clans, as it is a fish found in both fresh and salt water, and is therefore one of the most plentiful types of fish in Thedas.
Given that the Dalish are nomadic, the vast majority of their food staples are either preserved, of quickly made from whatever ingredients they can scrounge from their current campsite.
While most Dalish clans will utilize this recipe with some form of trout, you can also use this recipe for salmon (shetelan in Elvhen), and really any other kinds of fish that you wish.
INGREDIENTS
1 whole fish, gutted and cleaned.
Enough wood for a long, slow burning fire to last 3 to 4 days (or a smoker if you’re doing this in modern times)
2 bay leaves
Handful of salt (about 1/3 to 1/2 cup)
Handful of sugar or honey (about 1/3 to 1/2 cup)
Handful of borage, parsley, or other similar green herb native to the area (which herb you use will have an effect on the final flavor of the fish)
1 air-tight leather pouch (Or a zip lock bag if you live in the modern world)
NOTES
In this recipe, the fish is brined before smoking. This does two things: First, it increases the preservation time of the final product. Secondly, it adds flavor, and also helps to form a skin on the outside of the fish that the flavor of the smoke will adhere to, thus resulting in the most flavor for the time invested. Without brining, this fish will last about 2 or 3 weeks, provided it’s stored correctly (such as wrapped and stored in the fridge or another similarly cold and dry place). With brining, this fish will last nearly 4 to 6 weeks (thus essentially doubling the preservation time). The reason for this, is that by brining the fish, you are eliminating bacteria and creating a very hostile environment for bacteria to dwell, thus vastly decreasing the risk that the fish will develop any bacteria further down the line. With smoking, you are removing oxygen and moisture, thus vastly decreasing the chance of any nasties like botulism. By doing both methods, you are essentially creating double protection.
A note for modern uses: This recipe was used in medieval times for preservation, but does not meet the FDA standards for modern preservation. If you wish to actually use this to preserve fish, and not just get a tasty smoked fish, then please use this wet brine recipe instead of the dry brine:
2 quarts water 1/2 c salt 1/4 c sugar 1/2 tsp pink curing salt #1 (sodium nitrite)
METHOD
Mix the salt, sugar, bay leaves and green herbs together. If you are using honey, make sure to form a completely uniform paste. This will work best if you slightly heat the honey first, thus making it more liquid and pliable.
Spread the dry brine over the fish, making sure to completely cover both sides of the fish.
Place the fish in an air-tight bag, or container, and leave in a cold, dry place for 12 to 24 hours.
After 12 to 24, remove the fish from the container, and discard any liquid that has been pulled out of it. Gently rinse the fish off, making sure to rinse off most of the salt.
Next, lay the fish on top of a rack next to a slowly burning fire, making sure that the rack is above the smoke, but not above the open flame (otherwise you will roast the fish, not smoke it). Gently smoke the fish for 3 to 4 days, making sure to turn the fish regularly, adding enough wood to the fire to keep it burning just enough to produce enough smoke to envelope the fish.
If you are using a modern smoker, simply place the fish in the middle rack of your smoker. Cold smoke the fish for 2 to 3 hours, making sure that the temperature of your smoke does not exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37 C). Then hot smoke the fish until the internal temperature reaches 180 degrees.
Once the fish has reached 180 degrees, allow the fish to smoke for an additional 30 minutes, and then remove from the smoker. Allow the fish to cool in a cold dry place (such as your fridge, or politely ask your Keeper to use an ice spell).
It is very important that you hot smoke the fish, because unless you have a smoker specifically designed for cold smoking, you will not be able to smoke at a temperature low enough to ward off bacterial growth. The reason that you would cold smoke the fish first, is so that you can get a nice full-bodied smoke flavor without overcooking the fish. If you do not wish to cold smoke the fish, or you simply don’t have the means, then you can simply just hot smoke the fish from the get-go until you reach an internal temperature of 180 degrees. You will simply not achieve as much of a smokey flavor as you would by cold smoking it first.
Lastly, while it is possible to cold smoke the fish entirely, without using hot smoke, please do not attempt this unless you have the assistance of a professional (or you are a professional). Cold smoking entirely can be very dangerous when done improperly.
Properly smoked, your Dalish style smoked Gavulan will keep for about 3 weeks in a cold dry place, and for about 3 months in the freezer. For a traditional, but delicious meal, enjoy your smoked gavulan on a piece of dried flat bread, which has been spread generously with a thin smear of spiced halla cheese (or spiced goat cheese, if you aren’t blessed with access to halla). And of course, always remember to thank Andruil for helping you catch that fish in the first place.

Character Headcanons: Idres Lavellan
My Lavellan play through for ‘The Father, The Son’ Au. Still a WIP as I work through Fen’s (the son) personality, how big of a change he is from Solas (the father) and how that changes some plot points in the main story.
Age: 32
Class: Mage Rogue
Weapons of Choice: Dual Blades
Varric’s nickname for them: Bubbles
Who did they romance: Fen’Harel (the son)
Who did they get along with the most: Fen, Leliana, Dorian
Who did they get along with the least: Cassandra, Cole, Sera (she doesn’t hate them. It just took a while for them to find common ground)
More headcanons under cut. Link to where I found some of the prompts here.
10. A food they can't resist: fried sugar dumplings (Jamaican festival)
15. Injuries: childhood scars from learning how to hunt and exploring. Later on some came from human archers. There are scars on her face too but the complexion mod won’t let me have nice things. Later at the Lost Temple of Dirthamen, the high priest gave her a full-body vallaslin. She’s not sure if it was a curse or a thank you.
23. An object that is important to them: a handwritten recipe book that her mother gave her for traveling. It had specific instructions on how to make the meal taste just the way Idres likes and is a mix of cuisines Dalish clans from all other Thedas specialize in.
30. Favorite animal: light-torn steed, Avvar war nug, great halla mount.
37. How they would react to being the last person on the Earth: screaming internally. Would still live everyday just surviving. Would have a lot of animal companions.
48. Viewpoint on accepting help: not opposed to it. Being raised in a clan, she understands the importance of everyone having their role and performing them effectively. However, she will question the intention depending on who offers the help.
49. The perfect day: before the Breach, it was the days preparing for Arlathvhen. During the course of inquisition, any free day she could get. Usually those days are spent with Fen, cherishing the private moments they have together. After inquisition... she's still adjusting.
66. Are they easy to approach?: people often think she is until they actually start speaking to her. She tries to keep most conversations short unless it’s important, interesting or if she’s comfortable with the person.
69. Something they have a reputation for: disappearing. Like all the time.
98. An aroma they like: cinnamon.

Foods of Thedas: Prepared Ingredients
I separated these from raw ingredients because they either are foods/drinks on their own but are included in recipes, or involve a certain amount of cooking/processing to make them that separates them from those listed in raw ingredients. However, like with raw ingredients, I’ve only included items that are mentioned or shown in game for easy reference. Should you want to find additional and “speculative” ingredients you can visit this post or the master post.

Meta: cooking/cuisine (I'm going OBSCURE)
Meta Meme ll always accepting !
@born-of-loss
While Pelle's clan does eat meat Pelle is vegetarian. I say vegetarian because while he will not eat meat from animals he will consume byproducts from them like milk, butter, etc. He also eats insects.
In terms of meat his people mostly eat rabbits, bears, fennecs, or sheep. The rabbits, bears, and fennecs were brought back by hunters and the sheep were actually domesticated along with the halla. It was important to them to use every single part of the animals that were consumed for food. They often kept pelts, teeth, and bones from hunted animals to use for tools or other useful resources. Sheep they kept around for wool, and the ones that were eventually killed for food they kept the horns from the rams as well. The only animal they absolutely never killed and ate were the halla as they were considered a gift from Ghilan'nan and therefore were sacred, The domestication of them was primarily a means to care for and protect them from humans. The only resource used from the halla was milk. Killing halla was actually considered a huge offense to the Dalish, and they did not take kindly to humans slaughtering them for sport.
Pelle does know how to prepare and cook meat despite not eating it himself. He did most of the cooking in his household growing up and as a result knows how to prepare a number of things.
Because of their settled residence in the Marches, his people did have farms. They grew a lot of grains like barley, rye, or millet. They also grew carrots, potatoes, turnips, parsnips, etc. How well things grew really depended on the year, sometimes the soil was better one year than another, having farms didn't always promise consistency in what could be grown.
They didn't really have seasoning either. Typically adding an extra flavor to food was done with herbs. The most common things that Pelle cooked were porridge and soup. Sugar was also quite rare so savory porridge was a lot more common. Their man source of sweetener was honey, though sometimes syrup from trees could also be collected. Breakfast was typically porridge with a few herbs in it. Most of the food eaten during the day was nuts, berries from the forest, and insects that were caught and roasted like crisps.
It was pretty common for meat to be dried and eaten as a jerky since it was easier to prepare that way as opposed to having to cook it all of the time. Better preserved that way. If sheeo were killed for meat it was pretty normal to see that placed on top of a slice of bread.
Since syrup or honey wasn't as commonly used in porridge or other foods, it was instead used occasionally on top of breads or used to make meads and whiskeys. Another pretty common topping for bread was halla butter.
Another big thing was tea made from steeping edible flowers into boiled water and pouring a small amount of halla milk into it. Pelle personally likes mugwort tea with a small bit of lavendar in it because he feels that it helps him sleep a little better.
Since Pelle does not eat meat things he does eat are porridge, he makes vegetable soup with the meat placed on to the side so that his family had the option to put it in without him having to, he loves bread with butter or honey, potatoes--any way possible, berries, nuts, or insects.

ZevWarden Week Day 1 Eye of the beholder: Identity
“Who they were”
"Do you ever think of what could have been?" Alec asked, neatly packing up his belongings, among which was his old leather jerkin. He now wore Dalish leathers and light, beautifully woven chainmail -- the sort of which Keepers and Firsts would wear. He looked rather striking in that forest-green Dalish garb, and Zevran did not even pretend not to stare.
"Mm?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. "What could have been what?"
"Being Dalish. I mean, not -- joining the Dalish now. You've told me you tried, and I don't think it'd work out for me either." Alec checked the contents of his water canteen, then raised back his gaze and stretched a palm up for Zevran. "Give me yours, I'll fill them both up."
Zevran passed it over to the warden, then resumed his own packing and readying. He buckled shoulder pauldrons while they talked.
"I mean, what it would have been like if you'd been born Dalish," Alec said, casting water into both their canteens.
"I suspect the sole of my feet would be much thicker, yes?" Zevran said in jest, giving his warden a shit eating grin. His warden. Even if they were avoiding overt displays of affection right now, the knowledge that Alec had chosen him brought warmth to his chest.
Alec scoffed, poured cold water into his own palm and then flickered fingers at Zevran, showering him in droplets. "And your taste buds would be far less fussy," he teased.
“I believe you mean to say that the reason I don’t like Fereldan food is because I have a refined taste, caro,” Zevran said, tightening up his braid, “but, you see -- Dalish cuisine is rather wonderful. It is really just Fereldans who have no idea that seasonings exist, my warden.”
Alec shook his head at Zevran’s snicker, but a soft smile had been plastered on the boy’s face all morning. “What I’m saying is,” he said, ignoring Zevran’s jabs at his country’s cuisine, “If instead of being born in Antiva City, you’d been born into a clan. Everything would be pretty different, innit? I know I wouldn’t have been the ‘piss-poor elf’, and I wouldn’t have had to play catch up all the time. I mean,” Alec cleared his throat. “Neither of us would have.”
Zevran grabbed his backpack and threw it over his shoulders. The only thing left to put on was his pair of gloves -- Brand new, Dalish gloves. He ran his thumb along the embroidery on the hem, admiring the great leather work and skillful craftsmanship that had surely gone into making them. So lustrous, so traditional.
What would have been of him, had he been born into his mother’s clan? Not a flat-eared outsider, already indentured to the Crows?
It was hard to picture. For as much as his mother had been Dalish, he had grown up as an Antivan. Or as Antivan as they allowed him to be. The women at the brothel called him ‘the Dalish boy,’ and even the other elven kids seemed to think of him as an outsider, but reality was that the Dalish could tell him apart from them at a single glance. He didn’t talk like them or stand like their hunters did; didn’t believe in the deities they worshipped or understand the world from their perspective.
Theirs was another reality entirely, and not an easy one either. Constantly moving, avoiding all contact with human settlements, rejecting modernity and the comforts of the city? Grasping at straws to find out what elves might have been? It seemed hard in its own regard.
Though perhaps he would have had a mother, a family…
Zevran couldn’t really picture it. He pulled the gloves up his hands. “I suppose I would be a hunter, marry a simple lass in my early twenties, and die the same way as I lived, yes? Traveling?”
“I suppose,” Alec agreed. “They’ve got plenty of rules to follow.” He checked his surroundings for prying ears, and lowered his voice as he added: “And they think they’re so much better than the rest of us.”
Zevran snickered.
“Still. I mean… I guess they are better at least when it comes to magic.” Alec tied up his own hair, and grabbed his backpack. They started making their way toward the horses. “They’re far less superstitious about unconventional magic than the Circle. And I’m not even talking about blood magic, which I know is kind of a delicate matter. But shapeshifting, for one? It’s an ancient elven magic school, but you won’t find a single book about it in the Circle. Necromancy? Not allowed, either. Even, just… using magic to make chores easier and such. You’d think that’d be the first thing they teach, but they actually don’t. Ever. It’s the sort of thing we learn from each other. It’s always an older apprentice who tells the younger ones how to enchant a robe, or how to adjust a heating spell just enough to dry fabric instead of burning it. But the Dalish mages? That’s their whole purpose of being -- using their magic to lead the community.”
“Mmm, indeed. And had you been born Dalish, you would have been a Keeper one day, my friend,” Zevran said, hazarding a guess that such a prospect didn’t seem all bad to the warden.
“Yeah,” Alec nodded slowly, a longing smile on his lips. “Yeah, I would have.” He could have been a good one too, Zevran figured. He did not lack the curiosity, the determination or the grit that it took to lead people. They reached the horses, where most of their party was already gathered, ready to leave. Alec and Zevran loaded up their mare. “If I were a Keeper, I wouldn’t reject elven children from the city, running away to join the Dalish. If the point is never submitting, then there is no one living that truth better than kids who give up everything for their ideal of freedom, innit?”
“Not every clan rejects runaway elves,” said Li Na, interrupting their conversation from a few steps from them. Alec had to tilt his head to see her past his mare’s head. “And if they do, it is usually because we have a history of paying for it with our own lives. Human lords have been known to kill entire clans just to get their slave back. Or servant.” Grave as the subject matter was, she spoke in unfazed tones.
“That is truly horrific,” Leliana pointed out. “This has been a learning experience for me. Before, I had heard much about the Dalish, but most of the cautionary tales were nothing but lies. And I did not know people went to such atrocious lengths, either. I’d always thought-- Until recently, I’d always thought that serving a noble was a comfortable life.”
Mara blew a loud raspberry. “Comfortable only if you like living under a fucking boot.” She was the first one to jump onto the horse she’d been riding. “Yes, serah, it is a privilege to clean your freaking boot and aren’t you so generous to pay me barely enough to afford the clothes I need to even be allowed inside your fucking house. And they think we don't dress better because we don't want to, or we can't. Of course, it _must_ be out of desire that we live in squalor in the alienage. And by Andraste it's an honor to work for a human fucker, innit? Fuck that. My pops once got deducted a whole week’s pay for missing one fucking day of work. One day! That I was sick. Ain’t no one he could even complain to.”
“Even in the Circle, where they like to pretend there’s no racial bullshit, they always cut elves’ contact with their families,” Alec said, letting the conversation drift off its rails towards the path the girls had taken. “They burn letters and other stuff people send because it’s not like an elf can go to anyone to complain anyway. A human can submit a complaint to their arl or whatever, who might even bring it up with the Circle, but elves just get ignored.”
“What happens if you try going to the court to submit a complaint?” Leliana asked.
“They pretend they take it, then they just throw it away.” Mara answered. “Makes me want to smash their face in.”
Zevran chuckled loudly, still amazed at how much Alec and Mara resembled each other. In the way they looked as much as their antics. They were city elves through and through. Even Alec, who’d been raised in the Circle for most of his life, hadn’t really lost that inflection that Fereldan elves had in their speech. And despite having lived a different life from that, Li Na too shared common ground with them. Antiva City, Denerim, the Circle, the Dalish: Whichever the case, they had not chosen and could not hide who they were.
It was good to welcome another elf to the group.
“What are you smiling at?” Alec asked, leaning closer and kissing the top of Zevran’s forehead; the gesture so natural that Zevran figured he’d honestly forgotten about his own request to avoid public smooching for a little while.
“Seems like we have enough quorum to make a ‘bash the humans’ game, no?” Zevran joked, reaching out for the warden, looping a finger on the hoop of his belt and pulling him closer just a tad. Just enough to breathe him in, feel his warmth.
“I did once hear from a friend that perhaps Aveline’s tale wasn’t quite accurate, historically, and that some believe her to have been half elven,” Leliana said, spinning a new tale as they set off towards the Imperial Highway.

N4, L5, G3 for the oc abcs
favourite food & embarassing thing he did once - decided to join those two together; I like the idea of incorporating things from your own culture into the dalish headcanons and this is small enough that I really liked the idea of it, mainly one of the most popular meals in polish cuisine, which I found the closest name in english would be ‘the hunter’s stew’ would be what Theo likes to eat the most. He first tried it right after being taken in by the Lavellan clan aand since he was pretty hungry boy he just ATE IT ALL & the folks that were preparing for their hunting trip weren’t happy about it, Theo had a lecture about sharing and now I’m hungry myself, oops
Tumblr media
what benefits come with being his friend? one would definitely be he is tall so he can reach for stuff, he is good hunter so he’d cover the food supply while being out and he is a really protective fella once he trusts someone so the safety of his friends would be a pretty high priority for him
