Texas Antisemitism Executive Order
PLEASE SHARE THIS AROUND!!
As many of y'all know by now, I am a Texan. Specifically a Texan in higher education, at a public university. Gov. Abbott's new executive order to have public universities crack down on Anti-Semitic speech directly impacts the students advocating for Palestine.
Phrases such as "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" can now be considered HATE SPEECH!
“Some radical organizations on our campuses engaged in acts that have no place in Texas,” Abbott said in a press release. “Now, we must work to ensure that our college campuses are safe spaces for members of the Jewish community.”
This was never about protecting Jewish people, but protecting Zionists. The order was issued after universities across Texas had issues after Oct. 7th's events. Pro-Palestine and Pro-Israel students were butting heads, and some broke out into fights according to some sources. As a uni student myself, I have seen these conflicting sides in person. Abbott's statement also makes no mention of the Anti-Islamic rhetoric that has also been spreading due to Israel's persecution of Palestinians.
This order calls for all public universities and colleges review their free speech policies, and to lay out in their policies the definition of antisemitism, and punishments for Anti-Semitic rhetoric. All within 90 days of the order's publishment.
Most of this appears to be banking on HB 3257, the bill that introduced Texas' Holocaust, Genocide, And Antisemitism Advisory Commission
Now, there has been some actual pushback on this, from the The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Texas) as well as students and administration from the universities and colleges effected.
“This order not only undermines the principles of free speech and academic freedom but also perpetuates a harmful narrative that equates criticism of Israeli policies with antisemitism,” CAIR-DFW Executive Director Mustafa Carroll said in a statement.
Taken from the Dallas Morning News article posted earlier in this post.
The wordage used by Abbott worries many people, due to the fact that it is so vague. To the point where criticizing Israel and it's government can be considered hate speech.
Please share this around. If it is happening here, it can happen to any state.
Don't stop speaking about Palestine. Don't stop supporting the Palestinian citizens who are displaced right now. Educate your peers, donate if you are able, and don't give up hope.

As y'all know I love TCM 1 and 2 but I find it incredibly funny that, despite the fact so many Texans worked on the movie, the geography in it is a fucking mess.
To start, the first movie is stated to take place in the fictional town of Newt, in the also-fictional Muerto County. Most people assume Newt to be located somewhere outside of Austin, given that's where it was filmed. Makes sense. The TCM game even goes with this interpretation, with a map showing them in the Travis County area.
Tumblr media
But at one point in the movie, Drayton mentions needing to drive over to Childress. As if it's nearby.
Slight problem with that-
Tumblr media
THEY'RE SIX HOURS APART. So then you think, okay, maybe Newt isn't near Austin, maybe it's farther North.
But the second movie throws a wrench into things.
Tumblr media
If we go with this, then the Childress thing is again bizarre, as it's pretty far North. It also conflicts with the Austin area setting.
Tumblr media
As seen here, Austin and Travis County are closer to Central Texas. Nobody from Texas would call this South, unless they were fudging it a bit I suppose.
Moving on, we have Stretch and LG's radio station being located in Burkburnett. Now, Burkburnett is another real city, and it's near the Oklahoma border. The movie seems to know this too, as the station is named K-OKLA, and the Red River (which separates that part of TX and OK) gets mentioned. Nice and realistic! However, at one point Stretch describes Burkburnett as being "at the top of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex"...
Tumblr media
Personally, I wouldn't describe a two hour difference as being "at the top of" an area. And Lefty apparently drove two hours just to ask Stretch to play her tape on the air.
Tumblr media
I will give them some credit though: One cops mentions sending Lefty back to Amarillo. There is in fact a Rangers department in that city. They also have the Texas vs OU game being played in DFW, which is correct, as they traditionally face off at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Points for those details! But in terms of picking a location for the main events, things are a lot more scattered.
Anyway yeah, I know it's just a movie, mistakes happen, no big deal, but the inaccuracies are just really funny to me, in particular the Newt situation. Feels like Newt is TCM's personal version of Springfield.

I'm curious, since your screen name mentions Bluebell (a very popular ice cream brand from Texas) if you happen to be in Texas, specifically the DFW area? I'm moving soon and have a lot of kitty toys that I want to donate to a rescue or other organization, do you know of any in this area by chance?
Nope, I'm not in Texas!
I'm not sure where they're actually based in Texas, but I have worked with Classy Cats in the past.

Our yard guy. Lucas, is a hunter. I hunted in my younger days but in my old age I'm too sentimental to kill any animals. Sometimes when he's taking a break from mowing we talk about shooting. I've been wanting to try some target shooting on a 1,000 yard range but there aren't any I'm aware of near where we live.
Lucas told me about one in the Boerne area and one near DFW. I decided to spend a couple days at the one in the Boerne area and made reservations. My wife didn't want to put our dogs in the kennel to watch me shooting so she decided to stay home.
Off I went with my Ruger Precision Rifle. My plan was to leave early in the morning, do some shooting in the afternoon, spend the night, and drive home after shooting on the second day. I enjoyed the shooting but I missed my wife. On the rare occasions I'm staying overnight somewhere without my wife I call her and we talk on the phone before calling it a night.
I called home that night around 10 PM. No answer. I figured she might be out walking the dogs, or taking a shower, so I left a message for her to call me back. When I hadn't heard from her by 11 PM I called home again. Still no answer. At this point I felt the worry creep in. We hadn't been separated much in our decades long marriage and this was the first time my wife did not either call me herself or answer the phone when I was on an overnight trip.
I started calling every half hour. Every 30 minutes felt like an eternity. I didn't know what to do. I was worn out from the afternoon and fell asleep around 3AM. When I woke up about an hour later There was still no word from her. I tried calling with increasing frequency. I had a drink to relax, then another and another until I once again fell asleep.
I woke again at about 930 AM and checked my phone. There was a message from my wife. I'd had my ringer on vibrate and hadn't heard it. The timestamp on the message was 8:06 AM. She apologized for missing my call and said she was tired and going to bed, and that we could talk when I got back.
When I got back that evening she apologized again, said she didn't know what came over her, but she wasn't in the mood to talk about it. She told me I needed to give her some time. I'd learned over the years that pressing her was not only useless but could also be quite counterproductive so I just let it drop. It took almost a month and a lot of alcohol before she was ready to talk and I was glad I'd waited.
“So where we you when I called,” I asked her when she finally told me she was ready to talk.
“I was with Orin and Tony” was her surprising reply. I wrote about Orin and Tony in “Young Lust,” posted a few months ago, referring to them as O and T.
I immediately grasped the implications and felt my cock starting to harden in anticipation of what I was about to hear.
“What does being with Orin and Tony mean exactly,” I queried? “With them where, how? All night?”
“They took me out and then we went to a motel room.”
I was actually trembling a little when I asked “did you fuck them again?”
“We didn't go to a motel for Bible Study,” she quipped rather snarkily. “Of course we fucked, you're my husband not my owner.”
I had a raging hard on at this point, and out came my cock.
“Come on baby,” I coaxed, “tell me everything. I need to hear details. Don't hold anything back.”
Apparently, Tony had been unable to keep that first time with him and Orin and my wife to himself and had mentioned it to Lucas. Orin was embarrassed when Lucas asked him if it was true that the two of them had fucked my wife.
“Was your friend Tony bullshitting me or did the two of you really fuck Mrs. D” he asked?
“Fucking Tony,” he replied, “I told him to keep his mouth shut.”
“So it's true then,” said Lucas. “I'd love to get some of that myself, I can't believe you two beat me to it.”
“Well,” he continued, “if you want to try your luck with her again her husband is going to be out of town overnight next week. Let me know how it goes.”
Orin and Tony rang our doorbell at around 730 PM the night I was gone. Orin was holding a bouquet of flowers.
“These are for you Mrs D.” he said. “We heard from Lucas that Mr. D isn't home tonight so we thought we'd see if you'd like to go out to dinner with us. Our treat. Or maybe we could just go for a ride?”
“Where are your scooters,” asked my wife?
“At home tonight,” he said, “my parents finally bought me a car. I just have to pay the insurance/”
“It's sweet of you to ask,” she replied, “but I'm not really dressed to go out anywhere.”
“Please Mrs. D, you've been nice to us and we'd like to do something for you. We can wait while you get ready, or come back later.”
My wife couldn't help but feel flattered that these two young men were basically asking her out on a date at her age. What could it hurt she thought.
“Ok,” she relented. “Why don't you two give me some time to get ready. Come back in about an hour, and it's a date.”
As she got ready she downed a couple martinis feeling like if she was going through with this she needed to have a good buzz on. Even before an hour had elapsed she saw them on the security cameras waiting in the driveway. It was cute she thought, two young men this attentive. She wasn't naive though, she knew what was on their minds, what they really wanted, which was why she needed the martinis. Alcohol relaxed her and made her horny.
When she was finally ready she walked out to their car hoping they'd appreciate her outfit, and of course they did.
Tony couldn't restrain himself, “fuck do you look hot Mrs D” he said as he exited the car to make a place for her in the front seat.
“Well thank you Tony,” she replied, “I was hoping you'd like my outfit.”
“Fuck Mrs D, I love it,” Tony replied, climbing into the back seat. “None of our friends mom's are anywhere near as hot as you are.”
“Flattery will take you places,” my wife said in return.
|”We know a club where they don't check ID's” said Orin as my wife climbed into the passenger seat.
“I thought we were going to dinner,” said my wife. “Now I'm thinking you two just want to get me drunk and fuck me.”
“Sorry, Mrs. D, we were just thinking it was kinda late for dinner now,” said Orin.
“It's ok,” my wife said, “the club sounds like it might be fun. I haven't been clubbing for years, much less with two handsome young men as my escorts.”
She'd already down 3 martinis by the time they picked her up. You know what they say I'd quipped to her in the past, 3 martinis under the table, 4 martinis under the host. My wife joined the two of them one martini away from being under the host.
Sure enough, no one at the club asked for any ID. Orin and Tony ordered drinks for my wife but were careful not to drink much themselves. After another couple martinis my wife behaved very much out of character for her in a public place. She took turns sitting on their laps being fingered and making out with each of them, but no one else in the club really seemed to be paying them much attention.
By midnight my wife needed assistance just getting back to their car.
“Where are we going now” she asked, noticing they weren't headed in the direction of home.
“My parents are home,” said Orin, “so Tony and I got us a motel room. Is that ok Mrs D?”
“Sure,” replied my wife pretty much having accepted where the night was heading when the two of them showed up at the door with a bouquet of flowers asking her out on a date. “But I can't stay all night, I have to get home and let our dogs out.”
“I was surprised to see you two tonight” my wife said once they were in the motel room. “I thought you'd had your fun and were no longer interested.”
“No, “ said Orin, “we've both been wanting to fuck you again but this is the first time we've really had the chance. My parents haven't gone anywhere since the first time.”
“Yeah,” chipped in Tony, “we didn't think you'd want to do anything at your place, and we were afraid to try again with your husband around.”
“When Lucas told me your husband was going to be gone tonight we decided we'd try to see you again,” added Orin.
“Why would Lucas say anything about my husband, does he know what we did?”
“He does,” replied Orin, “Tony couldn't keep his big mouth shut.”
“He wants to fuck you too,” chipped in Tony. “He told Orin he couldn't believe we got you before he did.”
Somehow, thought my wife, it all seems rather disturbing, but she was too drunk at the moment to object or care. My husband is away and I'm in a motel room with two young guys who want to fuck me, so why complain? I'm so horny right now I don't care about anything but getting fucked said her inner monologue.
Tony wrapped his arms around my wife and kissed her. Orin took out his cock and began to stroke it watching the two of them making out. Tony slipped one hand down to unzip his pants and my wife extracted his cock, stroking it as they kissed.
Tony put both his hands on her shoulders and applied pressure to push her down onto her knees.
“Suck my cock,” he told her, “be a good wife and put that hot mouth of yours to work for me.”
Tony was the bigger of the two of them and had the biggest cock. He also was the more aggressive of the two and inclined towards arrogance and swagger, an attitude my wife claims to dislike. I have no doubt that his arrogance was at least partially the product of that fat 8 inch cock that was now poised with its own seeming arrogance in front of my wife's face.
“Come on,” said Tony putting both hands behind her head and pushing his cock to her lips, “swallow that fucking cock.”
She was aware of Orin behind them stroking his cock, enjoying the show, even though she couldn't see him. She opened her mouth and did as requested, swallowing that big cock until Tony's balls were pressing against her chin. He relaxed his grip on her head but used both hands to guide her mouth up and down, bouncing his balls on her chin with each stroke.
“Fuck yes,” Tony said to Orin, “look at this fuckin' slut swallow cock. The bitch has zero gag reflex.”
From “Mrs D,” to “bitch,” and “slut,” she felt an atmospheric change in the room but she didn't let it interfere with her performance. She wrapped her left arm behind Tony for support and used her right hand to squeeze and milk his balls as she sucked on that big flesh pipe, determined to drain those heavy balls.
“Fuck, the slut is going to make me cum,” said Tony, but I want to fuck her. Help me stand her back up Orin.”
They each took an arm and lifted her to her feet. She stood before them in her short black dress, hot thick thighs sexily exposed under flesh colored pantyhose hose, and high-heeled black fuck me boots. Tony had resisted the urge to fuck her in the car even before they got to the club but he was going to satisfy that urge now.
“Oh god I so want to fuck you,” said Tony, lifting her dress and exposing her pussy in crotchless pantyhose.”But first I want to suck on those big tits,” he said, tearing open the top of her dress and just pulling her bra down to get them out.
“God I love your big tits Mrs D,” he told her, sucking first one nipple into his mouth and then the other.
Between the making out and fingering in the club, sucking on his big cock, and now Tony sucking her tits, her pussy was gushing. She couldn't remember the last time her husband had made her this wet, if ever.
Meanwhile, Orin grabbed some astroglide they had left on the nightstand when they'd rented the room earlier in the day. He approached her from behind and felt his friend Tony push his cock into her pussy and start fucking her. Orin generously lubed up his cock with the astroglide and then tossed the rest of it onto the bed.
“Hold her still for a second Tony,” he said, then grabbing her hips, began to slowly push his well lubed cock into her ass.
She froze with surprise and the initial pain of anal penetration.
“Don't move,” pleaded my wife, “let me adjust.”
“Ok, go slow” she said momentarily.
Orin eased his cock in balls deep and said, “I'm in her all the way. Fuck is her ass tight. Go ahead Tony, fuck her.”
My wife wrapped her arms around Tony's neck, kissing him deeply as the two boys began to establish a rhythm. Now that the initial pain of anal penetration had dissipated she shuddered in pleasure at the sensation of the two of them pushing into her at the same time. The pressure of two cocks thrusting into her was simply exquisite. She felt like she was being hoisted into mid-air by young cock. She'd always enjoyed anal sex, or at least tolerated it, but with a cock in her cunt at the same time she remember how good it felt and wondered why she hadn't indulged it more frequently?
She felt Orin behind her turning her head away from Tony, wanting to kiss her. It was a little awkward but she kissed him back as best she could then turned back to Tony. The lust these two young men expressed for her ignited her own passion, deepened by a pending explosion of pleasure she felt about to overwhelm her. She was glad she hadn't gone with her husband but she felt a brief flicker of guilt at the thought before returning herself completely to the moment.
She suddenly felt Orin wrap his arms over her shoulders and push her body down into him. He thrust up on his tiptoes trying to push every millimeter of his cock into her ass. She could feel his body shudder and knew he was about to cum.
“Oh fuck,” he exclaimed....”oooohhhhhh....fuck” and she felt his cock pulsating and emptying into her.
She had been trying to hold back, to extend sensation as long as possible, but Orin cumming as he did pushed her over the edge and she was unable to contain the explosion. She saw light flashing behind her eyes and felt momentarily like she might pass out.
Oh my god,” she cried out, “oh my god,” feeling her whole body flooded with wave after wave of orgasmic bliss.
Orin pulled his cock out of her with an audible “plop” and settled back, practically falling into the chair behind him. Tony wasn't done yet and continued pumping his cock into her married pussy with increasing vigor. He turned her around and began backing her towards the bed as he fucked her.
His cock never entirely left her cunt as he re-positioned her onto the bed and climbed on top of her. He reached up and squeezed her big tits, and then started sucking her nipples, first one, then the other, alternating continuously as he fucked her.
She felt another orgasm building. As Tony continued pistoning into her and working her tits with hands and mouth, she reached down between their bodies and fingered her clit. She thought she'd felt Tony cum in her but he didn't get soft or stop pumping that big cock into her so she wasn't sure. She came again and just laid there as his cock kept sawing into her.
She was aware of Orin approaching and was surprised to hear him tell Tony to turn her so that her head was at the edge of the bed.
“Help me with her then,” said Tony, “I don't want to stop fucking her.”
Between the two of them they managed to move her into the desired position without Tony having his cock slip from her pussy.
“Again already,” she asked Orin, looking up at his hard cock hovering over her face.
“We both took some Viagra before we left the club,” he replied to her surprise. “We didn't know when we'd get another chance like this with you and didn't want to waste a minute of it.”
She didn't know whether she should feel flattered or used, but in the moment wondered if it really mattered.
Getting her head just right over the edge of the bed Orin bent his knees slightly, placing his cock against her mouth.
“Suck my cock Denise,” he told her, using her name for the first time.
He'd always called her Mrs D before and she didn't realize he even knew her name. There was something about it that seemed to make it feel more intimate, narrowing the gap between them, and yet at the same time a little threatening.
“Oh yeah, that's it” he told her as he pushed his cock into her throat. “I've missed this mouth Denise, I've never met another girl who can suck a cock like you do.”
He called her a girl. Was that a good thing or a bad thing she wondered? As Tony continued to fuck her pussy Orin now fucked her throat, pushing into her until his balls were pressing against her nose. Not pulling all the way back each time but keeping most of his cock in her warm mouth then pushing back all the way into her throat.
Tony had never stopped pumping into her, never gone soft, but she thought she had felt him cum in her two or three times without slowing down. Now Orin seemed renewed and kept plunging his cock into her mouth and throat until her jaws ached. She fully understood what it meant to be spit roasted. She felt like meat on a spit but there was something about the idea of it, of her, a married woman three times their age taking cock like this, that overcame with lust any doubts or reservations.
She wanted to be the “girl” of their sexual fantasies, to be the unforgettable female they would savor the memory of for their entire lives, and she threw herself even more completely into the moment and into the night. They need not worry about having another chance with her, she'd make it happen, and she'd get her cuckold husband to help. Not help sexually, but to help create the opportunity for her to enjoy them like this again.
Orin interrupted her reverie by pulling his cock out of her mouth and dangling his balls over her lips.
“Suck my balls Denise,” he told her.
She took his heavy balls into her mouth and sucked on them, something she had never done for me, and the idea of it increased her arousal. She felt him pushing down with his cock as she sucked, apparently trying to get it into her mouth at the same time. She opened her mouth as wide and she could and heard him moan as she managed to get both his balls and his cock into her warm wet mouth.
“Oh fuck that's good,” he moaned. “Suck it, fuck, I'm gonna cum,” he said, and pushed in with his cock just as he erupted down her throat.
She didn't miss a drop and neither did she stop sucking on his cock and balls. He never softened. Maybe she could make him cum again like that she though and decided she would try. Tony was still sawing his big cock into her cunt. She didn't want the night to end. She kept hearing her cell phone ringing in her purse. She knew it had to be her husband calling like he did whenever he spent a night away but she didn't care. Good cock had to come before good husbands.
“Let's change up,” said Tony. “Let's DP the slut again, and this time I want that ass.”
Orin got on the bed and Tony helped my drunk wife straddle him. She guided his cock into her married cunt and he pulled her down to suck her big tits which were hanging out of her dress.
“If Lucas was here we could make this bitch airtight,” said Tony, climbing onto the bed behind her.
“Maybe next time,” said Orin.
Tony picked up the astroglide Orin had earlier thrown on the bed and lubed his cock to fuck my wife up the ass.
“Oh my fucking god,” he said as he pushed his big cock into her ass. “This shit is fucking tight. I was wasting my time in the slut's cunt.”
“You belong to us now Denise,” said Tony as he fucked my wife up the ass. “We won't be waiting so long to have you next time.”
At some point everything became a blur. Memory faded. She woke up between them and looked at her watch. Fuck, almost 8 AM. Her husband must be worried and near panic. She shook Orin awake.
“You have to take me home,” she said, “right now, if you ever want to do this again.”

Hi! I grew up in the dfw area, and I’m here rn to spend the holidays with my family. The dallas zoo is my local zoo, and I think maybe I can help clarify something? The zoo officials were emphasizing that nova wasn’t dangerous bc people here in dfw have a lot of guns, and there was a real concern that people would hear about what was happening on the news, picture a massive leopard stalking the streets and eating children, and start vigilanting with their shotguns and handguns in order to ‘protect their property’. the zoo staff were focusing on looking for her in the zoo grounds itself but a lot of the news was focusing on keeping people from panicking.
Yup, that's absolutely what was going on! I know so many people were worried that someone would go try to hunt her for fun or "protection".
But that's not what they said. For instance, an article quoting the VP of Animal Care stat "clouded leopards are dramatically different animals from other leopards. They are much smaller, weigh about 30 pounds and pose no danger to people.” That's not "there's no danger to people in this instance." And while it may seem like splitting hairs, it still matters because this is an animal that is managed like a dangerous animal, that was literally just listed in a federal bill as being a dangerous animal, etc. Just because they're skittish and likely to avoid people doesn't mean they aren't potentially dangerous if you do end up in a close scenario with one.
Yeah, in crisis communications you can't get into all the details, and I know that. But it still perpetuates misinformation. I mostly mentioned it because I'm spicy about the BCPSA and I got snarky whiplash seeing an AZA institution swap messaging so quickly.
It was good that they made clear she wasn't going to be hunting people or doing anything dangerous to the surrounding community. I just wish they'd been a little more specific, because I've already found at least one video from an exotic pet Youtube channel entitled something like "Dallas Zoo admits clouded leopards aren't dangerous." Clarifying misinformation after it spreads is really dang hard.

To be clear i am not "cancelling" DFW or objecting to the reading of his work lmao, I am a "problematic artist" enjoyer. Also iirc in this particular case, mary karr said that she doesn't mind people reading his work. I just think it's notable that an actual concrete reason why someone might feel uncomfortable w him being lionized is rarely mentioned compared to a much more nebulous "infinite jest is for white dudes in mfas" thing to tweet about.

21/07/2023 Diary entry because I’m unable to say anything. It's Friday night, 10:11pm my housemate and friend are out for a boardgame night at his coworkers place. I’m home by myself because I suspected the risk of becoming bored more quickly than is polite was too high. I also felt like a pollutant. These people; at least the few I’ve met are lovely, health conscious, they climb several times a week, they’re paid well by a charitable mental health foundation. I didn’t want to be the only smoker stepping outside mid-game and wasn’t willing to leave it behind for even an evening. I bought a navy blue pair of workwear jeans today for $5, I felt so good in them I almost went along tonight. Clothing is not no big deal. Behind me is the garage door and behind that an alleyway. I can hear a man hacking up phlegm, coughing and spitting it out. We deserve each other. I can hear Penny crying from behind the glass door inside. She is the best dog I’ve ever had because I’ve never had a dog, and she’s a Cat. I’ll spend hours in here and when I open this door she’ll be the first thing I see waiting at the other one to meet me. She flips onto her side when I enter. I’m sitting here waiting for something magical to happen. I’m waiting for the muse to drag me the threads of anything worth saying. The muse looks a lot like a Rat. I’m hungry again maybe the muse can drop me some scraps. Maybe the muse is my cat and she’s calling desperately in a language I cannot decipher. Typical. Inhaling a cigarette. I found a new podcast this morning, listened to half an interview with Biographer D.T Max on David Foster Wallace. The interviewee said DFW was too intelligent to write novels but that didn’t stop him. He also mentioned a quote that was cut from an old interview in which David said he was an exhibitionist who wanted to hide and this resonates deeply, I know this course intimately. The full quote; “God, what a ghastly enterprise to be in, though - and what an odd way to achieve success. I’m an exhibitionist who wants to hide, but is unsuccessful at hiding; therefore, somehow I succeed.” All we do is relay information relayed over and over until the information mutates. A dog barked. Someone shushed the dog. I can hear the busy traffic on Sydney rd. 10:36pm. Cmon muse. Without my headphones blaring the same song over and over again I’m too aware how quiet it is in here at night. Sometimes I’m in here past 2am, audibly human and distinctly Ratless. It’s probably due time I fall in love, maybe anyone will do - though I know myself better usually the rat is in my lovers belly and it’ll gnaw it’s way free eventually. Here’s the D.T Max article that was turned into a book on DFW, which I’m probably going to buy when I get inside right after tapping on all the walls.

5 P.M. RADAR UPDATE: A line of storms along the cold front continues, with most of the storms remaining behind the quickly advancing front. Some large hail and strong wind gusts are possible with this activity. The storm we mentioned as having the best chance at producing a tornado a couple of hours ago just had a very, very brief tornado reported on it on the NW side of Ft. Worth Texas. The storm mode is getting pretty crowded in the DFW metroplex. Cool surface air seems to be limiting the overall severe threat with eastern extent somewhat. More cells are trying to fire further south along the dryline which will pose a large hail threat if they can mature.Still, severe level hail and a brief tornado remain possible into the evening with the storms ahead of the line down in Texas. #okwx #txwx

I almost sent another query/thought aloud about David Foster Wallace before sitting back and thinking about exactly why he pops up so much in my correspondence with you, despite the fact that I don’t think either of us particularly likes his work. The solution I came to was that for all his foibles, for all that his entire oeuvre could I think fairly be called a failure, he was the last major American pater-author who was really worth patriciding in the Bloomian sense. Everyone since has been either too neat or too insubstantial. Franzen strikes me as someone who could write like Dostoyevsky, but insists on writing like Dickens (not a diss on dickens, who in his way, has a claim to be the greatest English writer since Shakespeare, but a man has to know his strengths) and Saunders and far too many of that ilk strike me as thinking that the world could be perfect if only we would follow the dictums of the noble liberals who of course know best and joined our voices in establishing a crystal city in which nobody could even stick his tongue out at the world. I do love House of Leaves, but Danielewski i strikes me in some ineffable way as more like a talented comics writer than a real literary figure, you know? Anyway in essence I guess I’m saying that I think DFW had that inner fire, that worldsadness, and just wasn’t able to translate it into anything real. Which I think in a way was what eventually redeemed him for me, coming to understand that he was a profoundly tragic figure rather than just a smarmy male feminist who threw cofee tables at women. In any case that was a bit bloated but I’d love to know your thoughts!!
I buy that as a reading of DFW's life, almost rendering his life more than his work the object of influence-anxiety. As for the other Gen Xers, Franzen made his devil's bargain with the middlebrow, Saunders is Vonnegut reincarnated and almost as annoying, Danielewski is—as you imply—gifted and intelligent but not quite a novelist. Who else? Chabon had the raw talent but was undone by puerility. Never read Lethem. Never read BEE. Nobody mentions Eugenides anymore—eclipsed, apparently, by Sofia Coppola. Zadie Smith is probably a better essayist than novelist (I only read one novel, but it was really bad). Jennifer Egan? No. Will Donna Tartt's stature continue to grow? Will she stand alone in the ruins? Or is it just a truly lost generation? It's not unprecedented. In the whole expanse between the American Renaissance and High Modernism, between the 1850s and the 1920s, how many American novelists are really considered giants, people you absolutely have to read, people you'd mar your education by missing? Two: James and Twain, and Twain only for one book, itself deeply flawed. Who else? Stephen Crane, Theodore Dreiser, Edith Wharton—gifted, yes, but not epochal. In literary history, maybe particularly the literary history of our most un-literary nation, the peaks are high but the the troughs are long. Speaking for myself, I am content to wrestle Bloom-wise with the pretty much unambiguously great Silents, with Roth and Morrison and DeLillo and McCarthy.

Do you think Todd might have flown into DFW for Larry’s funeral? He stayed on a bus with them for a few days one time while they were visiting Blake on tour. I remember Carol talking about sharing the bus with Todd.
That’s a possibility I hadn’t considered until you mentioned it. I forgot that he had gotten to know the Larges and had spent time with them on the tour bus.

Male Ego Is Killing Black Women
A man recently murdered a woman after she beat him in a basketball game—a senseless and bizarre example of the dangers of all-too-common misogyny.
This article originally appeared on levelman.com
Of all the examples that highlight the dangers posed by the fragility of men, few have frustrated me as much as the story of Asia Womack, a 21-year-old Black woman who was murdered in Dallas last week due to a man’s bruised ego over losing a basketball game. Yes, you read that right.
“This was supposed to be a friend of Asia’s. She’s eaten with the man,” Asia’s mother, Andrea Womack, told Dallas’ Fox 4 News. “She’s fed him, and he turned on her and killed her in a vicious way.”
In her obituary, the family notes the young woman affectionately referred to as “Fat Baby” had a lifelong love of basketball. She was also an active churchgoer who participated in the youth ministry at the Gospel Tabernacle Church in neighboring Mesquite, Texas, and studied kinesiology at Texas A&M Commerce. The obituary indicates Asia was known for having “a big heart filled with so much love, joy, and laughter” and describes her “smile that could brighten your day.”
The circumstances that have caused Asia’s loved ones to never see that smile again center on a pickup game she played last Monday evening. “We’re taking it kind of hard because it was senseless,” Asia’s aunt Juanita Smith explained to another local affiliate, NBC DFW 5. “I just don’t understand why you kill somebody over a basketball game.”
Asia’s family members acknowledged to reporters that there was some “trash talk” involved, but that sounds like any other sports game played. There’s no reason for anyone to die over that.
The Womack family’s pastor, Rev. John Delley, told CBS11 that he, too, had trouble understanding how a basketball game could result in this type of violence. “This is so senseless... you are embarrassed because a female beat you in basketball?”
With respect to the pastor, the use of “female” here has a lot to do with the underlying sexism that undoubtedly motivated Asia’s shooter.
I’m not saying the use of “female” alone makes a man a killer, but men who fail to see women as people deserving of equal respect often use that as a noun in place of “woman.” Asia might have been a female basketball player, but she was a woman. Women deserve that distinction for the sake of their humanity, not to mention proper grammar.
Asia’s alleged gunman, 31-year-old Cameron Hogg, is said to have been unable to handle not only the loss, but the teasing and taunting that erupted in response to losing presumably a low-stakes game to a woman.
Nevermind the fact that she’s a decade younger than him. Or that she apparently was a skilled basketball player. All that matters is that she was a woman, ergo, less than.
Based on the available reporting, Hogg seemed very intentional in allowing his frail ego and sexism to push him to violence. After he was said to have taken his kids and brother home, he returned to the park and shot Asia five times as she was walking home. His car is believed to have been captured speeding away by a nearby surveillance camera.
He left her dead on the sidewalk.
We live in a society that continues to instruct men to view women as not only weaker than men, but to see them as objects to be dominated by men. So men are told that they can’t lose anything to a woman—certainly not anything that requires physicality. When a man does, it’s not a testament to the athleticism of a woman but the perceived inadequacies of the man who lost.
It’s an attitude you often find in men who play sports, but it applies to men collectively in their broader treatment of women. And when it comes to Black women in particular, this mindset leads to a dangerous reality.
In “Black Women Deserve The Right To Be Free From Violence,” Alicia Nichols and Christina Jones write: “In 2020, every day in the United States, four Black women and girls were murdered by their husband, boyfriend, father, or another man they knew.  In 2019, Black women accounted for 14 percent of the female population in the United States, while 28 percent of the females killed by males in single victim/single offender incidents where the race of the victim was known were Black. Firearms were the weapon most commonly used by males to murder Black women in 2019.”
As other Black women have expressed in response to Womack’s killing, the violence and attitude behind her death are common—and they can trace their own stories of men or boys losing their cool over “losing to a girl.” It makes me think of some of the little boys I’ve been tempted to stomp out for trying the same thing with one of my nieces.
None of this can change unless we confront misogyny at every level in every single person. Otherwise, we are complicit in the spread of violence against women.
There are so many four-letter words I want to use to describe a man like Cameron Hogg, but punk feels most fitting. A bench warrant has been issued for his arrest, but at present, he has not been apprehended.
“Detectives are still working the case,” said Dallas PD’s Kristin Lowman in a recent interview. “No one is in custody at this time. They’ve been working it since Monday night trying to find justice for Miss Womack.”
Someone that violent, stupid, and Black will most certainly be caught in due time. And while I won’t meet violent acts with violent rhetoric, I hope the rest of his life is marred by misery and containment.
And I want that misery to be spread to all men like him. Because women like Asia Womack shouldn’t have to die over a weak man and his pathetic ego.
They should be able to celebrate their wins in peace.

Week 1 | Week 2 |
Week 3 (§15 - §21)
"'Sometimes what's important is dull. Sometimes it's work. Sometimes the important things aren't works of art for your entertainment, X.'"
I remember struggling with this book the first time I read it, but it's coming along pretty easily this time. I don't know if it's that I've read it before or that I've read other difficult books since then, but either way, apparently struggling is productive. We get our first clue about the title in these sections when Wallace mentions a character named The Pale King. I have the sense that he was in charge of the location before Glendenning and was also the reason for the chaos, but it's hard to know for sure what's going on with the plot.
§19 is probably my favorite so far. There's an interesting discussion about American culture and the way we care about our rights as citizens but don't want the responsibility that comes with that. Wallace seems to take issue with the way we expect governing bodies to act as our conscience, but that seems like a natural extension of the social contract to me. It also expands on the theme of attention and why it's so difficult to pay close attention to things that aren't interesting--because there’s some deeper, internal fear we’re trying to distract ourselves from at all times.
He's also a master of capturing voice and dialogue, even if it isn't always clear who's speaking. There's always that one guy who seems to willfully misunderstand what people are saying and derails the conversation with non sequiturs. It's interesting that, while a number of the characters are named, one is referred to only as X, and another as I. It's the only use of first-person in the section that I noticed.
The DFW Discord server is hosting this readalong. Join us for discussions! 💀
