"Jumin, I have a unique surprise for you this year.” As per usual, Daisuke showed up unannounced with Genevieve and an assistant in tow carrying what he’s brought and getting straight to the point of the matter: his best friend’s birthday celebration. In years passed he’s come bearing gifts of fine wines and trips abroad to stay at elegant hotels, but this year he felt like adding more of a personal touch to his gesture- a sure sign of the changes he’s been going through now that he’s finally found an amount of closure in his life.

“I did make an attempt to cook for you once before, but this time I have far more experience forcibly ingrained in me through my time with a certain stubborn detective. I could never promise anything of professional quality, but I’d like to share this with you.” A hint of sincerity bled through his usual aloof, pretentious mask, even accompanied with a small smile before Daisuke was immediately ordering his assistant to take his ingredients into Jumin’s kitchen where he quickly got to work preparing Japanese style curry, something he’s had countless times alongside Haru- and the very first thing Haru ever had him help prepare. Though, this time there was far less injury involved to himself, even if his vegetable cutting still left much to be desired.

All through the process he was willing to humor Jumin if he felt like talking and catching up, or working diligently on his own, feeling a sense of pride once he was finished and setting the table all on his own with their meal and complimentary glasses of wine, having just about forgotten the status he and his friend held and how easy it would be to have anyone else do this for him. This was just how it was at Haru’s place. There were no servants or chefs, just them having a meal together prepared by their own hands and it was an experience Daisuke hoped to share with another who was precious in his life after all of these years Jumin has remained at his side.

“If it isn’t to your taste we can always seek out other options- after all, I’m no chef even on Katou’s level- but I feel this is the best I’ve been able to prepare so far on my own. Happy Birthday, Jumin.” Nervousness was not a feeling the magnate was used to, but that unfamiliar clench in his chest had to be that as he presented his offering to one of the very, very few people in the world who’s opinion he actually cared about. This was nothing ordinary between them, it was something entirely new, and all he could hope is that it could be enough.

Happy New Year! This is the first time I've drawn in months, and the first Digimon fanart I've drawn in a couple years. But lately I've been inspired by the amazing artist GDN (gdn0522 on twt) who has been pumping out a large volume of the most gorgeous Digimon fanart for a couple of years now (even some DaiHika!). I'm also (cautiously) excited about the upcoming Digimon 02 movie, so I decided to go back and finish an old sketch I did in 2020...and here we are. I put away drawing for a good while due to irl things, but hoping to pick it up again. Even if I can't do finished pieces, I'll at least try to sketch more, cuz man I'm out of practice.

I've been cooking, folks. Grilling. Simmering. Boiling. Various other synonyms. About *JigZeni* of all things. My fixation ship just HAD to be a rarepair, didn't it?? I tried to condense pretty much all of my thoughts into one post and I might have gotten a *bit* carried away, oops. It's probably not THAT long, but still. I regret nothing.

- I imagine (in a general sense, headcanons aside, characters as base as can be) that if Lupin were to never make a move and continue with the coy "will we won't we" shit with Jigen and Zenigata, that they would get fed up to a point where they might attempt to seek solace with each other on a somewhat frequent basis.

It'd probably happen on accident at first; a chance meetup at a bar, the gang gets split up, Zeni has Jig cuffed in the back of a squad car just-another-day-of-the-week style, and one gets to talking while the other decides to humor for once. And I doubt either would be against chatting again after, and lord knows these two like their seedy bar trips, so why not let fate decide when?

- This can be to varying degrees of intimacy!! I love how all of the ships let you do that in some capacity, but JigZeni feels like one of the more flexible ones.

Whether it be as simple as complaining over drinks for a few hours or taking things a step further and heading back to some motel to "get it out of their systems" in "other" ways, ahem ahem.

Either way, they find that they enjoy the other's company and, to their abject horror, whatever weird friendship thing they've developed ends up turning into something genuine and (even worse) autonomous from Lupin.

Because what are they without him? What would they become?? They sure as hell don't know!! But hey, at least there's one other human being on this planet who GETS it.

- And I say that with relative confidence because I see Jigen and Zenigata being on the more (since a better word escapes me) *monogamous* side?? Like they put a lot of weight into a few singular relationships.

They have acquaintances, yes, but how many can they truly call a friend? How many can they trust, *beyond question*, to have their backs, to keep their secrets, to protect their lives, even?? Because trust is a big thing for these two!! Losing someone close hits them way harder than most, to a point where it's actively harmful and discourages them from pursuing anything concrete (also doesn't help that their luck with partners is absolute *shite* and things rarely ever end on a decent/ non-tragic note).

Jigen got SO lucky with Lupin. They ooze trust for each other, and the same goes for Goemon, too. And for a guy like Jigen, having not one but TWO whole-ass people he can depend on is absolutely WILD to him. They're all he needs, really. Zenigata still hasn't found something that concrete yet (on HIS side of the law, at least), and given the nature of the series and his role within it, there's an incredibly low likelihood he ever will.

But at least Jigen knows that pain. He's been there! He can relate! He can console! And Zenigata KNOWS it's legit because he's read, like, *so* many files about this guy. He's Lupin's not-that-much-better half ffs. Zenigata knows Jigen's Been Through It and the fact that Jigen even TRIES to relate despite his rough-ass persona really gets through to him in a way that no one else can.

- All of that baggage would bleed into why they're hesitant to blatantly pursue Lupin. Even though they know that Lupin CAN and WILL reciprocate (enthusiastically, even), Jigen and Zenigata, deep down, also know that he'd never be able to give "all of himself" to them like they are willing to for him.

Jigen is dissatisfied (probably even jealous) of Lupin and Fujiko's goings-on even though he knows it's a *consensual* sort of give-and-take, and you CANNOT tell me that Zenigata isn't the slightest bit jealous of Lupin's tight-knit camaraderie with his crew. "I could treat you so much better", "I wish I could have that attention all to myself" sorta vibes. Don't even get me STARTED on how the excluded party would feel about JigLup/ LuZeni, yeesh.

- Lupin loves them profoundly, no doubts there, but Lupin also loves *everyone*. Which basically turns into if they can't have all of *him*, then at least they can have all of *each other*, y'know??

Even if their friendship (or something more) lasting is impossible, at least they can pretend for a little while.

At least SOMEONE gets it, and that someone also happens to look pretty damn handsome in a fedora, too.

Plus Zenigata is Jigen's type. End of discussion.

I DO wanna hear other people's thoughts, though! I can't help but think I'm missing SOMETHING despite writing them for so long (and there's only a handful of people out there who know I have been *writing them*, hooh boy). Hopefully I'll be able to get some of that stuff out there one of these days, but MAN am I a slow writer. Fingers crossed.

Here comes chapter 6! It’s finally calm! However, there’s usually some calm before the storm >:3 got some Lupin and Pop’s interaction this chapter though!

Zenigata slowly opened his eyes. Something felt strange…like he had heard a noise. He cautiously sat up from the group of thieves, checking his watch. Jeez..it was early. He looked back at the group, laughing quietly as he watched them. Goemon had his head leaned on Fujiko’s and was sleeping quite peacefully. Fujiko was curled up into the samurai’s side, her hair messed up from moving in her sleep. Jigen’s hat had been knocked from his head, the gunman equally curled up against the samurai while his face twitched as he dreamt. Zenigata gently placed the hat back on Jigen’s head, glancing over the edge of the bed at Lupin before his eyes widened. The thief was awake, staring out the window at the moon silently.

“…Lupin..?” He whispered softly, looking at him cautiously.

Lupin startled, turning quickly before he relaxed. “Hiya, Pops.” He whispered, smiling tiredly. “Didn’t expect you to be the type to keep bedside vigil.” He teased gently.

Zenigata smiled, rolling his eyes as he carefully climbed onto the edge of the bed. “We all are actually.” He nodded down at the sleeping group.

Lupin peeked over the edge of the bed, snickering softly. “Where’s a camera when I need one? That’s great.” He laid back, looking at the inspector quietly for a moment.

“How’re you feeling?” Zenigata tilted his head. They would have to give him more medication in a couple hours…

“Fuzzy.” Lupin smiled softly, dangling his arm over the side of the bed. “Check out my arm. That’s pretty cool.”

Zenigata cringed slightly. Okay..he was high from the pain meds. He should’ve probably expected that. At least he seemed like he was mellow. He didn’t like that Lupin seemed so calm about his cybernetics, though. He might completely freak out once he was off the medication..which wouldn’t be super ideal.

“Mm..You seem pretty grumpy, Pop’s. Go back to sleep.” Lupin smiled softly, waving him back to the pile of sleeping thieves.

“I’ve slept enough. I’m just worried about you.” Zenigata moved closer, looking him over.

Lupin laughed softly. “Spooky. Who are you and what have you done with Zenigata?”

“Oh, be quiet.” Zenigata pressed a hand to his forehead, humming quietly.

Lupin hesitated slightly, leaning into Zenigata’s touch after a moment. It was interesting how comfortable his hands felt, despite how rough they were from years of chasing after him. Zenigata blushed a bit, looking down at Lupin quietly. It was definitely strange to see the energetic man so..calm?

“You’ve got some nice hands, Pop’s.” Lupin smiled softly. “What’re you doing?”

“Checking your temperature.” Zenigata glanced away, carefully laying Lupin back against his pillow as he moved his hand away.

“Cause I’m so hot~.” Lupin laughed, smirking as he winked at the inspector.

“Oh, my god.” Zenigata groaned, putting his face in his hands. “You’re insufferable.”

Lupin snickered, snatching the inspectors hat before popping it onto his own head. “How do I look?”

Zenigata looked at him, snorting. “Dumb.” It was funny though.

Lupin laughed softly, looking at Zenigata happily. It had been a while since he had seen the inspector and he was glad to see him. It was nice to see him without being chased around too! Zenigata smiled a little, watching him in amusement. At least he was doing better..

“Hey..watch this.” Lupin smirked, gently moving Jigen’s hat onto Goemon’s head before popping Zenigata’s hat onto Jigen’s head.

“Oh, they’ll kill you for that.” Zenigata rolled his eyes.

Lupin giggled softly. “Nah. They love me too much for that.” He looked down at the group softly.

Zenigata tilted his head quietly. “You really care about them.” He knew how much the others cared about him..

“Of course!�� Lupin smiled, glancing back at Zenigata. “And I care about you too, Pops. You’re all important to me.” He laid back happily, looking at the ceiling. “The most important things in my collection~.”

Zenigata blushed a bit, glancing at the others quietly before looking back at Lupin. “We are..?”

“Of course!” Lupin smiled, pulling Zenigata down on the bed beside him. “I love you guys.” He turned to him, patting his cheek gently.

Zenigata smiled sheepishly. “You’re high as a kite right now.” He shook his head, laughing softly.

“Maybe. But I’m being serious.” Lupin smiled, closing his eyes as he sighed. “I can’t wait to see how they like their new hats.”

Zenigata rolled his eyes, fixing the blankets around Lupin carefully as he laid beside him. They were apart of his collection…that didn’t sound too bad honestly. Treasures from around the world, despite being stolen, and they were at the top of the list? It was interesting that Lupin viewed them as more valuable than something like the worlds biggest diamond or ancient treasures, but that was the type of guy Lupin was. The thief snored softly beside him, moving closer to the inspector as he slept. Zenigata sighed softly, closing his eyes as he carefully put an arm around the other man. It was kind of nice…being here…

Jigen slowly woke up, groaning at the sun in his eyes before he hesitated. His hat felt..different? He reached up, pulling the hat off before his eyes widened. He sat up, looking around before he stopped. Goemon was asleep with his hat on his head! Why did he steal his hat? And why did he have Zenigata’s? The gunman looked around, tilting his head at the snoring inspector in Lupin’s bed. Weird..

“Why am I wearing your hat..?” Goemon mumbled tiredly, taking the hat off. “And why do you have Zenigata’s?”

“That’s what I was wondering.” Jigen shrugged, taking his hat back. “Check out Pop’s though.”

Fujiko yawned, stretching out. “He’s snuggling with Lupin.” She smiled softly.

Goemon sat up a bit, raising an eyebrow at the sleeping inspector as he laughed a little. Had they been too uncomfortable for him to sleep on? That would be odd, considering he spent two weeks in the closet. Fujiko smiled softly, smoothing her hair out as she rested on Goemon and watched. Jigen rolled his eyes, sitting up a bit more as he gently shook Zenigata’s shoulder.

“Wha-?” Zenigata mumbled, opening his eyes a bit. “What’s the matter?” He looked at them tiredly.

“Care to explain why we were playing musical hats?” Jigen smirked, tilting his head. “And why you’re up here?”

“Ah..Lupin woke up in the night..” Zenigata mumbled, rubbing his face as he put his hat back on.

“..what-?” Jigen stood, looking over at Lupin quickly. “Was he alright?”

Goemon peered over the inspector curiously, frowning a bit. “Why did you not wake us up?”

“Because it was three in the morning and you were all dead asleep.” Zenigata sat up a bit. “Plus, he was high as a kite from those pain meds. He was the one who switched the hats around.”

“Was he acting alright?” Fujiko bit the inside of her cheek, glancing at Lupin.

“Did he notice the..?” Jigen glanced at the cybernetics, frowning a bit.

“..He called them ‘cool’..but he was pretty loopy so..” Zenigata sighed. “We need to wake him up to give him another dose of antibiotics soon anyways. If you want to talk to him you can.”

Jigen nodded. He wanted to see how Lupin was doing himself. He wanted to see how he was acting and if he was really okay. Goemon nodded, watching anxiously as he glanced at Fujiko. Fujiko glanced back at the samurai, frowning a bit. They had been waiting for this moment for a while..now they were here and they were all worried about his reaction. Hopefully it would just be alright…

“Ugh. Have you run out of all other parties in this building to annoy?” Daisuke scoffed, not even trying to hide his irritation upon seeing the other detective. There were absolutely others the magnate couldn’t stand in this building, first and foremost being a certain red-headed buffoon his partner refused to cut off, but Ranpo sure did his best to make it near the top of Daisuke’s ‘if anything happens to them I didn’t witness it’ list.

“I’m perfectly capable of drawing conclusions from the current evidence in my current case using HEUSC and my own skills of observation. Go find another case to shove yourself into as subtly as a wrecking ball. My suspect will be in cuffs by the end of the day.” It would’ve been earlier if he actually had it his way of perhaps pushing a little here and there to create opportunity, but Haru would probably have an aneurysm if he tried. Oh, how Daisuke wondered at times how he put up with such heroic, by-the-book nonsense...

“Leave.”
