Welcome to the 'Best Character with [X] surname' polls!
This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
NB: the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often they will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
If you can't find a surname, it's because I couldn't find enough candidates (at least 3 from 3 distinct medias) to compete. Feel free to submit candidates!
I will be posting several polls at a time, so do come back and check this masterpost to remember which polls are ongoing, who the winners are, and who's coming up next!
Currently ongoing polls:/Tian/Dao/Chao/Xin/Ran/Sang/Miao/Cang/Yao/Zang/Chong/Nangong/Kong/Hai
Finished polls: Xing/Rong/Nan/Ren/Pan/Qu/Fu/Sui/Tan/You/Sima/Xuan/Chang/Xun/Shangguan/Jian/Qian/Shu/Xi/Yuwen/Cai/Sha/Yin/Ceng/Helian/Zeng/Lou/Mi/Ji/Ping/Tong/Tuoba /Ge/Murong/Hei/Niu/Tao/Si/Pang/Zi/Gongsun/Mao/Qing/Lian/Chi/Shan
There's only a certain number of hyperlinks that can be added per post, so the rest of the completed polls can now be found here

let’s all be honest here guys...
Yunlan is a single father to Da Qing and I want NO ONE to argue with me on that....like ever...I will fight as hard as Chu fights for his man Changcheng to defend this canon.
also Da Qing totally loves his new dad Shen Wei.

The moments after, Part 1
Not sure if I’ll post this to AO3 yet... But in any case, happy birthday @lazygeisha
It’s loosely based off of the last fic I wrote here (100% Guo/Chu), but it’s not necessary to read it if you don’t want to.
Pairings: Weilan (established), Guo/Chu Summary: Changcheng vows to himself that he could live one thousand times one thousand lifetimes in service, doing only good deeds if it meant that in each of those lifetimes Shuzhi was by his side. Despite his best wishes, the Wheel of Reincarnation is not that kind. (Un)Fortunately, he has his gay god dads Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei on his side. Da Qing just wants some more snacks damn it.
Chu Shuzhi wakes up to what should feel like a normal day in Dragon City.
The temperature is not too hot or cold, the sun shines brightly in the early morning hour, a fresh breeze brings with it the smell of the streets tinged with the smell of bread from the bakery downstairs.
Everything is normal. So why does his stomach feel tied up in knots?
As Chu begins his morning stretches before his daily jog, the sensation persists.
It follows him for several laps around the block as a warm-up.
It dogs him as he runs for several miles in the empty streets.
It clings even as Chu showers in boiling hot water, scrubbing his skin raw, as if he could cleanse the feeling from his body by force.
Chu is no stranger to this feeling.
It is anticipation.
Something is coming.
It leaves him feeling paranoid all morning on his walk to work at the gym; an itching sensation like a thousand eyes staring at him. He snaps at the poor barista who messes up his coffee. He even growls at Zhu Hong, the receptionist, who is thankfully unphased by his behavior or else she would retaliate by leaving snakes in his shorts again. Chu doesn't even know where she got venomous snakes in the first place and resolves to never find out.
The feeling finally leaves him once he changes into his gear, wraps up his hands, and starts punching the weighted punching bag. It’s cathartic, nothing but the feeling of impact and strain of muscle, and Chu is thankful to finally escape the churning in his gut.
“Lao Chu! Already up to no good?”
Chu feels the rhythm of his punches break as Zhao Yunlan casually strides in, neat and pristine in his police chief uniform and looking 100% uncomfortable about it but 200% comfortable with himself and 300% pleased that his husband probably dressed him up that way. Chu briefly remembers the itchy feeling of the same uniform on his own skin before grunting an affirmation.
Chu’s friendship with Zhao Yunlan is a bit of a mystery, even to the boxer/trainer himself. They had met, fresh out of the police academy, Zhao Yunlan even then, loud, boisterous, but cunning and bright, and 150% in love with his husband, Shen Wei. Now the power couple of police chief Zhao Yunlan and Dragon City University darling Professor Zhao Shen Wei are always the talk of the town.
Still, Chu is sometimes disturbed by the pair because both seem to have… issues. Professor Shen has always been old-fashioned by most modern standards. He still writes with a brush and ink, not that students mind his beautiful calligraphy, but at least he has a cell phone and can use his email to limited effect. He still gets confused about downloading attachments, forwarding emails, and remembering to hit ‘reply all’, much to the consternation of his students. His Chinese is rather dated as well, but everyone takes it as part of his charm. He always seems so polite and earnest, Chu wonders what he saw in Yunlan.
Yunlan on the other hand… Chu feels that when Yunlan looks at him, he sees someone else, something else. Yunlan will make jokes and references to something that Chu has no memory of (it’s usually jokes about puppets?), but then attempts to laugh it off as if it was a mistake in identity. But it happens awfully frequently, and when Chu confronted Professor Shen about it, acknowledging that Yunlan would never say anything, the professor gave him one of his timeless calm smiles that made everyone’s heart flutter and said not to worry, and he’d straighten out his foolish husband.
Yunlan came into the bureau that day with a grimace on his face and an apology on his lips, but it didn’t really stop him.
That aside, nothing covers up the feeling of the Zhaos being ancient. They carry a gravitas, a feeling of having lived through many lives and ages that cannot be hidden behind smiles and gentle demeanors. Even their cat Da Qing, which was somehow named the same as their adopted son Da Qing, feels old and weighed down by years.
“Shouldn’t you be at home, mooning over your husband,” Chu asks while adjusting the wrap on his right hand. “Or at the office telling people to do your job for you?”
Yunlan merely smiles and shrugs. “My wonderful, sweet, Xiao Wei has a meeting this morning which means I get to come here and talk to my former comrade in arms!”
Chu rolls his eyes. “If all you’re going to do is chatter at me, leave. Otherwise put on some gear and spar me.” He returns to the punching bag, attempting to get back into rhythm.
“Oh, are you sure you’ll have time for that today?”
The staccato of Chu’s punches stops again. “What are you talking about?”
Yunlan suddenly feigns disinterest, unwrapping a lollipop and admiring the color before putting it in his mouth. “Oh, just a feeling. Something important might happen today.”
“What are you-”
As if it was planned by the universe (or Yunlan, the sneaky bastard, he’s lucky his husband is a saint), the doors to the gym burst open with the sound of chattering young teens, all dressed in standard school issued gym clothes, chaperoned by someone who looks like he should be joining them instead of in charge of them.
The younger man trips over his own feet walking in and while all the kids laugh at him, they help him up and ask if he’s ok. His hair is plain, his clothes are simple, but modern enough to be fashionable, and nothing about him explains why Chu feels his chest contract and his lungs ache for air. Nothing explains these emotions in his gut, this yearning hunger that opens up and tells him to take in every inch of the young man and never let him go. It’s dizzying, the rush of emotions, and even more confusing is how fast they leave, as if it was a momentary madness that descended upon Chu and left upon realizing there was no reason for it to be there.
------
Guo Changcheng had woken up in his small apartment feeling hopeful. On its own, the feeling wasn’t any different than Guo normally felt every morning, hoping to do more and help others. But as he drank his tea, watching the sun come over the skyline on his day off from classes and part-time jobs, Guo felt different. As if there was a switch that had been turned on and now another program was running in his brain. It whispered to him to follow the feeling, and so he did.
He followed it to the orphanage where he grew up and volunteered to take the kids to the gym for their self defense class without urging, and the feeling grew stronger. With each step, it pulled him, faster and faster. The kids would start complaining at any moment about how fast he was walking, but Guo couldn’t help himself. His feet didn’t belong to him today it seemed.
Standing outside the door, Guo felt his heart racing. It usually meant panic, but instead a serene feeling took over and when Guo reached out for the doors, they opened loudly on their own as if pulled by a great force. The kids ran inside, shouting, shoving, laughing, and Guo stood motionless.
The most handsome man he had ever seen in a tank top and exercise shorts was standing next to Chief Zhao Yunlan, and he felt like his heart would burst.
Shen Laoshi would have a poem in mind to describe this feeling, Guo was sure. It would be about the beauty of violent storms, the blooming of a late developing flower, or perhaps the calm in the center of a maelstrom.
“What tremors my heart feels, as though the wind shakes branches, and thunder crashes like gods colliding,” Shen Laoshi would probably recite. “Violent is this feeling, borne of 10,000 years, and even if I were told to wait 10,000 more, I would.”
When Guo stepped forward, reaching out, continuing to chase the feeling, he felt it drop, as if he was falling, and then he really was falling, tripping over himself. Some of the older kids laughed as they helped him up, asking him why he was still so clumsy, could he really be their ge if he was so absent-minded all the time?
“Oh! Xiao Guo! I had no idea you would also be stopping by today!” Lao Zhao yells over the din, cheerily working his way over to Guo as he gently prods the teens into a line in front of Zhu Hong who is quickly passing out forms to all of them. The handsome man in the back does not move, but his muscles flex every so often and Guo tries very hard to look away until Lao Zhao appears.
Guo smiles brightly at Lao Zhao before going into a very formal bow. “Lao Zhao! I also did not expect you here! Shouldn’t you be at a meeting across town? Shen Laoshi told me it was important!”
“O-oh! That meeting?” Lao Zhao pales and Guo notices the smirk that spreads across the boxer’s lips. “W-well, don’t you worry about it, Xiao Guo, it was, uh, rescheduled! Yes, yes, rescheduled. Come! While your charges get registered with Xiao Hong, let me introduce you to my friend who runs this place!”
Guo is dragged to Mr. Handsome and feels his knees shaking, but he puts on a brave face. “Lao Chu, this is Guo Changcheng. He is one of Xiao Wei’s students, but today it appears he is volunteering again, hmm? More kids from the orphanage? Xiao Guo, this is my good friend Chu Shuzhi, we were partners back when he was a cop, you know?”
Guo feels his face contort weirdly, somewhere between a grimace and a smile and bows. “V-very happy to meet you sir! P-please take care of the children!”
Chu Shuzhi is more intimidating up close, but after the introduction with Lao Zhao, Guo thinks he’s scowling slightly less. “Welcome. I’ll do my best.”
“So are these kids from the same orphanage you came from, Xiao Guo?” Zhao asks, now on his second lollipop. Chu looks determined to look uninterested in whatever bits of backstory Lao Zhao is offering. Guo suddenly wishes he were more interesting. Why couldn’t he be an influential young man instead? Maybe with a minister in some government office for an uncle? Or perhaps a fellow police officer? Anything would be better than a homeschooled orphan who works on a literature major part-time. Guo feels the urge to blush rising in his cheeks and quickly blurts out a reply.
“Oh, yes! I managed to save enough to help sign them all up for self defense lessons here! I-I think it would do them all good.”
“You paid for 30 kids to take self defense lessons here?” Chu asks. “That’s way too much money for a volunteer to muster up.” Guo feels a bit indignant after that.
“N-Not at all! I organized lots of donation drives and some fundraising and and… Only a little of it was from my own savings, really…” Guo shrinks in on himself a little, bravado gone after speaking his mind. “But I think it’s worth it, for them to learn. To have an opportunity. It’s dangerous out there at night and they have activities after school and I can’t walk them all home all the time...” Guo’s left hand hovers over his own right shoulder before he lets it drop. He swears he feels both Lao Zhao and Lao Chu track the motion and tries to change the topic. “S-so please! Do take them all seriously into your care!”
Lao Chu sighs but grumbles his acceptance. Guo smiles again before running out the door, shouting a goodbye to the teens and Zhu Hong. He quickly does pop back in to yell, “I’m telling Shen Laoshi about you skipping out on your meeting, Lao Zhao,” before running off again.
-----
“That brat!” Yunlan is fuming and Chu allows himself to evaluate what just happened.
Guo seems to be exactly the kind of person he dislikes. Too soft, too dependent on others, too bubbly and overly concerned. But no matter what he tells himself, Chu feels like something is different now. The knots are all gone from his stomach and instead a sense of satisfaction is arising. The word “finally” floats to the forefront of his mind and he wonders why. Chu comes out of his thoughts in time to hear Yunlan continue cursing.
“A thousand times a thousand life times he said, and this is how he repays me,” Yunlan continues muttering.
“What was that? A thousand times a thousand?” Chu asks as the students file into the gym proper.
Yunlan actually pales. “Well, I should run back to the office! I wouldn’t want Xiao Wei to think I was slacking all day. I have a beautiful husband to take care of after all! See you around!” And even though Yunlan is putting on an act, Chu can see the twinkle in his eyes. He’s being set up. Chu resolves to be extra difficult next time he sees Guo and the Zhaos in the same room.
The opportunity to be difficult comes sooner than expected and not entirely in the way Chu intends.
Chu hears shouting in the alleyway near his favorite take-out joint just as he leaves with his dinner in hand. He peers around the corner to see Guo with a collapsible baton in hand, the tip of it shaking as wildly as Guo’s pulse as he tries to dissuade three thugs from advancing.
“I-I mean it! I gave you all my money already! I-I d-don’t have anymore!” Guo at least manages to keep his eye on all three, but he’s not watching where he’s going and trips over a trash can lid.
Chu sighs and picks up a pebble and chucks it at the closest thug. When all three turn around, his most menacing glare is in place, hood up, food abandoned, knuckles cracking. “Back. Off.”
The ensuing brawl is disappointingly short and as Chu helps Guo up, desperately ignoring the twinge that goes up his arm because why is his hand so soft, he finds the Zhaos running up to them with Da Qing (the son) in tow.
“Xiao Guo, are you alright?” Shen Wei is already hovering at his student’s side, ever the responsible one. Chu hands him over to the professor. He misses the look Guo gives him as he does so, but Shen Wei doesn’t. Guo’s eyes are filled with stars and admiration and Shen Wei mentally crosses his fingers.
“Handled it all already, hmm?” Yunlan asks around his lollipop. Da Qing is on his phone, calling for someone to pick up the unconscious men sprawled over the ground. “You didn’t even hold back. I’m surprised.” Chu only raises an eyebrow. “Right, right, not like they could stand up to someone of your caliber anyway. And here I thought we’d be too late…” Yunlan nudges something with his foot and Chu catches a glint of a knife.
“Are you setting me up?” Chu asks bluntly. “You know I’m not interested.”
Yunlan’s eyes widen and Chu knows it’s mostly for show. “Why Lao Chu, I can’t imagine why you’d say such a thing! In all my decades of knowing you at the department, would I ever try such a thing?”
“What do you mean decades? It’s been less than one. You’re shameless.”
“That I am, but I wouldn’t-”
“Three years ago.”
“Ok but that was-”
“Five years and two months ago.”
“Oh now that’s just unfair, Lao Chu.”
“L-Lao Chu!” Guo bows in front of him, although he is still shaking, his voice is clear. “Thank you for helping me. I don’t know what I would have done if you didn’t step in.”
Chu scoffs, a retort on his lips, but for some reason Shen Wei gives him a look, and the biting comment dies in his throat. “It was nothing.”
“P-please let me thank you. Have you eaten dinner yet?”
Chu looks to his abandoned take-out boxes on the ground, and to the cash Da Qing has just stuffed into Guo’s hand from the the unconscious men (“What, I’m just returning stolen goods!”). Neither seem appealing.
“It’s fine.”
“N-No! It wouldn’t be right. P-Please Lao Chu, let me treat you.”
“If you don’t need that money so badly, then learn how to use that baton of yours. If you can’t use it, carrying it around is just a liability,” Chu huffs, picking up his discarded bag of food.
“Lao Chu, that is an excellent idea. I think you should teach Xiao Guo,” says Shen Wei.
Chu freezes and internally fumes. Another trap and he fell for it. He should have known better than to think Professor Shen was innocent and docile all the time if he managed to keep Yunlan in line.
“Why Xiao Wei, that is an excellent idea! Lao Chu, since you’re already teaching his young charges at the orphanage, what harm could it be to teach him as well? No need to worry about the money, Xiao Guo.” Guo starts to protest but Yunlan cuts him off. “No no, Xiao Wei and I insist! You are Xiao Wei’s precious student! We can’t allow you to go on unable to defend yourself!” Yunlan continues on his tirade as the sound of sirens approaches.
“Shameless,” Da Qing mouths at Chu from behind Shen Wei. As Da Qing passes behind him to greet the officers pulling up to the street he whispers, “I tried to tell him to let things take their own course this time, but he wouldn’t listen. Sorry, Lao Chu.”

Hey! How are things going? For the college prompts, Chu x Guo and 21 (I picked at random, hope it works)
Okay, I wasn’t actually going to do prompts, but you asked and I like you. :)
I hope this is okay, I just typed it and didn’t go over it very much, it’s been decades since I’ve been to university. Also, I kinda changed it a little but from dorms to off campus?
21.  I get stuck with a late class that doesn’tend until 9pm and I’m always anxious about walking across the campus to thedorms, so you offer to walk with me and one night, I find out that it’s in theexact opposite direction that you need to go in
Guo Chang Cheng was, well, screwed. Either way he lookedat it, it sucked. He needed this “History of Marxism” class to graduate, but theonly time it was offered was Tuesday nights between 6 and 9 pm, ending wellafter dark. He hated campus at night, although he knew that it wasn’t the ‘denof thieves and murderers’ his Aunt swore it was. He was just… concerned abouthis safety, alright? Perfectly acceptable to be concerned, not freaking out, just ‘concerned’.
He was relieved that his class was full, out of 250students there must be someone who was going in the same direction at night, maybe even someone he knew, which would be more comfortable for his innateshyness. His eyes wandered around the lecture hall, looking for anyone he knew, then stopped dead when their eyes met. Chu Shu Zhi. They hadn’t had a class togethersince last year, that more than slight crush he’d developed and thought wasgone sudden came back online with a ‘ping’. He returned the nod of acknowledgementand turned his attention back to the front as class began.
“Chang Cheng! Over here!” Chu waved his hand, motioninghim to meet him by the back exit doors. Guo made his way through the mass ofstudents surging to leave the stuffy room and the boring drone of the professor, apparently thrilled that the class was over. That was the longest 3 hours ofhis life, it felt the like whole semester just passed in one night instead ofbeing the first in a long line.
He made his way to Chu, careful not to notice that hestill looked as good in his all black outfit as he did last year, by the looksof it he still went to the gym several times a week. “Hello Chu Ge.” The old familiarnickname slipped out unintentionally, damn it. “Xiao Guo,” Shu Zhi teased, “are you still meeting the bus or didyou move to campus?”
“Still living at home, my Aunt won’t budge. How about you?You still commuting too?”
“Yeah! Still taking the same bus as you.” It had been asurprise to Guo last year when Chu had used the same route, getting off afterhim. They’d shared conversation the 5 stops it took for Guo to reach his stop.,he had no idea how many stops after his that Chu rode to get home. “Can I walkwith you? Since we’re going the same way?” Guo assured him it was fine, and sotheir new weekly routine began.
They sat together in class, Chu Ge teasing Xiao Guo abouthis use of old fashioned notebooks instead of a laptop like most students used,Guo explaining - again – that pen and paper never ran out of battery power orgave him the ‘blue screen of death’ during an important lecture. “I have 6 pensand 5 pencils, so even if I run out of ink in one I’m good.”
Karma being what it was, the next lecture Chu’s laptoprefused to boot up. Nothing, dead. “Battery was charged? No previous problems?”Guo was trying not to be smug about it. “Did you try turning it off and turningit on?” THAT earned him a smack from his seatmate.
“Look, I’m gonna go see if my friend in the Computer Sciencedepartment can fix this, I’ll be back at the end of class to pick up. Maybe Ican borrow your notes or something?” Guo said it was fine and Chu took off.
During the lecture, he found his mind wandering, mindlesslydoodling in the margins of his notes while he was supposed to be taking notesfor two. Luckily it was just a review of the novel they’d been reading forhomework, nothing important.
Sure enough, Chu was there after class, laptop in hand. “Everythingokay? Fixed?” Guo pointed at the computer bag. “Yeah, just a battery issue, nolong term damage.” He pointed at Guo’s knapsack. “Sorry to be a pain, but can Iborrow the notes and return them to you next week? Unless they’re important andyou need them?”
Handing them over, he explained it was just novel reviewand nothing serious, which is why his notes were spotty, no way being able toadmit he’d spent most of his time wondering what Chu Ge’s favourite pet was, orhow he liked his coffee. Or if he’d taste like cinnamon if he kissed him. Chulooked through them briefly, and shoved the notebook in his bag.
They walked together, chatting about various things like music, movies, non important stuff. The bus stop was more full of people than usual, apparently the previous bus never showed up forcing everyone to wait for thenext one. Chu suddenly felt a hand on his shoulder and a surprised sounding “ChuShu Zhi?” causing his expression to tense up. “What’re you doing here waitingfor the bus? I thought you lived in the dorms way across campus? This is the completeopposite direction from you!”
Wait, what? Guo didn’t pay any attention to Chu’s words ashe explained whatever his reason was to his friend, his mind was processingwhat he’d just heard. Chu said goodbye to his friend, then turned a sheepishface to Guo. “Um…”
“How long have you lived on campus, Chu Ge?”
“Since freshman year.”
“So when you bussed home with me last year you were livingon campus??”
“Yep.”
“Why? Why did you lie and come with me?”
“Because I like you, dumbass.”
He pulled Guo’s collar and kissed him quickly. “And basedon all the doodled hearts with our initials in the notebook margins, can Iassume you like me too?”
Guo had forgotten those, blushing to the roots of hishair. “Dumbass” was his only response, going in for a second kiss.
