Brazil to help Chile battle deadly fires, says Lula

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Wednesday announced that his administration is set to send support to Chile, whose southern regions have been devastated by forest fires. Since fires began last week, 24 people have died, while thousands of hectares of forest and homes have been razed.  

President Lula spoke with his Chilean counterpart Gabriel Boric on the phone today. According to Lula, Brazilian Air Force planes will be deployed to help Chilean authorities fight the flames amid high temperatures and heavy winds. Lula did not specify what further type of aid might be sent.

Three years ago I got a Chilean fire tree seedling for free, it should have been planted a year previously and was in shock and root-bound.  I took it to my folks’ house and we planted it in the middle of their backyard lawn.

That first year, it didn’t do squat, but it didn’t die.

The second year, it got to be about nine feet tall, but didn’t bloom.
