2moons2: It’s been kinda meh so far, the main couple bores me, 50/50 chance I’ll drop it.
Beyond Evil: (Not a BL.) I mean, it’s a murder mystery. What more can I say? I am, of course, obsessed.
Carmilla: This one’s very different than every other show on this list - it’s Western, it’s a web series, and it stars a primarily female cast (and an nb character!) and a lesbian couple. It’s so good, I absolutely love it! I binged the first season in a night and just barely started on the second.
Colour Rush 2: Just started this one but it seems like they’re exploring the world and its inherent crimes rather than the romance, which is something I’d wished they’d done at the time of the first season, so I’m cautiously intrigued.
Kinnporsche: Admittedly… I haven’t been too happy with this one the past two eps? I’ve fallen a tiny bit out of love. That said, the acting in KP is, as always, absolutely spectacular, as is the cinematography and fight choreography. Maybe the next few episodes will change my mind.
My Secret Love: I really don’t know what to make of this show. The principal shipping her students and blackmailing them into making shipping content is incredibly uncomfortable, especially because it’s played off as a joke. But other than that… dare I say I’m kind of enjoying this show? The secret relationship side couple is by far my favourite part, I’m not necessarily sold on the other pairings yet but I don’t actively dislike them yet either though so there’s that. We’ll see.
Old Fashion Cupcake: I can’t explain why I’m so in love with the first two eps of this show. Something about the dynamic between the leads, the quick and sharp dialogue, the fact that not a single interaction feels without purpose, the fact that they’re both so instantaneously likeable? I’m super excited for more, the teaser for this week looks like A Lot.
The Gifted: Just started this one early this week and I haven’t had much free time so I’m not very far in but I’m absolutely loving it so far! Intriguing plot, good suspense, loveable characters, I’m pumped!
Triage: Okay, listen… I try to be careful with declaring whether a show is worth watching or not until it’s done airing but this show has yet to fall short of perfect and it’s written and directing by the folks who did Manner Of Death (tied with Bad Buddy for my all-time favourite BL). So… let’s just say that if it continues as it’s been going and sticks the landing, my two-way tie for favourite BL is going to become a three-way tie. I could rave about this show for days. The characters, the plot, the mystery, the pacing, the main and side couple, both of which are very loveable (a rarity in BLs), the friendships, the way that every single little thing turns out to be important. Currently, I could not recommend this show enough. I put this list alphabetically for simplicity’s sake but this show is currently my favourite on the list.
Rewatching:
I just introduced one of my best friends to BL dramas so we watched (rewatched, in my case) Semantic Error together. I’ve also rewatched what’s out for Triage three times with various friends, if that counts.
Looking Forward To:
Gap the series. Vice Versa. And… admittedly not much else as far as upcoming shows go. Which is probably not a bad thing, I have a to-watch list a mile long. I plan on starting Kamisama no Ekohiiki and First Kill soon. (Also I’ve heard that they might be adapting another novel by the author of Manner of Death and Triage, which has me foaming at the mouth.)

When Essek's old alter ego is suddenly asked by Da'leth to work at Soltryce Academy, nine semi-retired adventurers are thrust back into a web of danger, intrigue, and wizardly shenanigans. (Surprise, surprise! I’m back with another Shadowgast WIP)
Chapter 1: The Worst-Case Scenario
Caleb watched Essek hover back and forth like a miniature, panicked storm cloud.
“This is ridiculous! It must be some kind of joke. We haven't had any contact for years, and now he expects me to believe him? What is he playing at?”
“Breathe, Essek, breathe. You will not solve this mystery by wearing a hole in—above—the carpet.”
“What?” Essek looked down, then stopped floating. “Oh. My apologies. I’m a bit…well, you know.”
“I would be too.” There was urging in Caleb’s voice. “Take a seat, Schatz. Let me see the letter.”
Essek obliged, handing over a crumpled scroll right before collapsing heavily into his chair. The fire of a cold late-autumn evening cast their den in gold and orange light.
“Does he explain himself?” Caleb turned the scroll the right way around. “Does he say why?”
“Has Da’leth ever done that?” Essek snorted. “All he wrote was that I—rather, that Thain, had been selected. And I only have two days to respond.”
Caleb waved his hand, and a glowing orb appeared. He brought it closer to the parchment. “May I?”
“Please.”
“To the esteemed Lord Dezran Thain of Nicodranas—good grief. He really isn’t subtle.”
“Tell me about it,” Essek said.
“Perhaps,” Caleb continued, “you are aware of the ongoing investigations into the Cerberus Assembly. If so, then perhaps you have also heard that Archmage Tversky and Archmage Margolin will be leaving our ranks by the end of the week—ah yes, Beau was quite proud of that.”
“She should be,” Essek said miserably. “It’s about time. Read the next part.”
“And so it falls on the surviving members of our organization to fill these vacant roles. We believe, for the safety and stability of our country, that the next Archmages of Conscription and Dysology should come from within the Empire; however, it has been brought to our attention that adding a Nicodranian mage to our ranks could be quite valuable. Such an alliance would strengthen our ties to the Menagerie Coast, as well as assuage any concerns that the Empire is isolationist or inflexible. Therefore, as we have been friends for some time—really?”
Essek made a face. “I would not have called him my ‘friend’ in any form, but we have known each other for a few decades. Unfortunately.”
“Unfortunately,” Caleb commiserated. He smoothed out the letter and found his place again. “—I wished to have the pleasure of informing you that on behalf of the Cerberus Assembly, you, Lord Dezran Thain of Nicodranas, have been extended the honor of replacing Archmage Margolin in his secondary capacity—as the distinguished and peerless Headmaster of the Soltryce Academy. Oh. My gods.”
Essek groaned. He had his head buried in his hands.
“You Identified this already?” Caleb managed eventually.
Essek nodded. “I wish I hadn’t.”
Caleb continued to stare at the letters. The fluid, curving script seemed to blur all together. “That’s…gods,” he said again.
“Agreed.”
“I…can’t imagine how you’re feeling right now.”
Essek snorted. “Actually, if anyone could, it would be you.” Then something occurred to him. Suddenly, the hearth shone an odd color in his eyes. “This was delivered to our home. To this house, in Rexxentrum. Yours. That…bastard.”
Caleb was quick to understand. He took a deep breath, then reached over for Essek’s hand.
“Maybe it was just enchanted to find you wherever you are. Like a Sending spell.”
“I’d hate to think otherwise. That would mean—”
Caleb interrupted him out of mercy. “Every inch of our tower is warded from divination. Besides, you’ve adopted an endless array of personas. I don’t even think we’ve been seen together with you as Thain, not since the party years ago.”
“Still.” Essek rubbed his eyes. “The timing makes me think he knows something. That, and the fact that it’s for Thain, I mean—what has Thain accomplished? I don’t even remember telling anyone I was a mage!”
“That, ah…that might have been Jester’s fault. She really enjoyed adding to your personas. You needed a past, after all, otherwise you would have just appeared from nowhere.”
“So she told everyone that Thain was a famous wizard?”
“The best lies are often true,” Caleb shrugged. “Though I admit that she might have gone a little overboard. You know how much she likes to praise her friends.”
It was a testament to Essek’s troubled mood that he barely acknowledged this. Caleb squeezed his fingers. “They said…they did say you could reject them. And their political reasoning is not unsound. Maybe that is all there is to it—the Assembly needs someone to be the Headmaster, and they thought of you.”
Even after so many years of trying, Caleb’s reassuring voice still left some things desired. Essek shut his eyes.
“My love, the very idea that the Cerberus Assembly is even thinking of me is a nightmare.”
“Fair enough.”
“I just want to know why,” Essek muttered. “Why now? Why me? What is he after?”
“I don’t know,” Caleb said. “I wish I did.”
Essek suddenly turned toward him. “I—I hate to ask this, but can you find out? You know…ask our old friend the newest Archmage.”
“Ah.” Caleb’s face gave a complicated shuffle, one common these days when Astrid was mentioned.
“If you don’t want to—” Essek hurried.
“No, no, I can…try.” He scratched his chin. “She’s just been less open, lately. She’s not…pleased by how thorough the Soul is being. Beauregard is relentless.”
“It has been seven years. That’s a lot for your kind, but probably just enough for Da’leth to finally realize they mean business—” Essek blinked. “Do you think that’s why he picked me?”
“We don’t know that he’s behind this,” Caleb said lamely. At Essek’s expression, he relented. “Alright, alright. I’ll stop suggesting otherwise.”
“It’s not unappreciated, I just prefer to be direct. It is clear that Da’leth is trying to use me again. This time, in order to hurt you and the Cobalt Soul. There is no point in believing otherwise.”
Caleb brushed Essek’s face. “No, that would require him to think he could use you in the first place. But that is impossible, because Thain does not know Widogast.”
“He does, though.”
“Yes, but is Da’leth aware of that? He cannot be.”
“I thought we put an end to that.”

“Oh, lovely—”
“—however, any plan he has cannot be based on our connection. We have been doing this…being us, for seven years now, Essek. If he were going to play against that hand, he would have done so already. This must be something else.”
Essek huffed. “What, though? What reason does he have? I haven’t been important to the Kryn for years. I resigned, I’m virtually a stranger there, and I certainly don’t have any more secrets for sale.” He paused. “Well, ones that Ludinus would desire. I’m useless to him.”
“I highly doubt that,” Caleb said. And his voice, while kind, had a faint edge to it. “You are right in that there probably is some motivation here. It might be related to the investigation in other ways—after all, two members of the Assembly are leaving. That makes four upheavals in under a decade. And if the Soul and the crown are both pushing for the appointment of more partial Archmages, then it might very well be the case that Da’leth just wants someone he can control. In your case, through blackmail.”
“Hooray for me.”
“He probably wouldn’t, though,” Caleb said. “Since, as you said, this is a situation of mutually assured destruction.”
Essek grimaced. “I have been somewhat wishful in that department. Even with your support, it is still my word against the Martinet.”
“Our word. That includes the Cobalt Soul.”
Essek shook his head. “You’ve seen how well he’s stood up to them so far. Can you honestly say that my safety is a sure thing? Don’t lie to me, Caleb.”
There was a pause.
“Essek, I will do everything in my power to protect you.”
"I know." He patted Caleb on the hand.
Outside their tower, far away, the evening bells of the Rexxentrum began to ring. One, and then two, and then almost a dozen, loud and bronze across the dimming sky.
“There is one way to find out for sure what Da’leth is planning.”
Essek sighed. “I know. But I don’t like it.”
Caleb leaned back in his seat. “Neither do I.”
The cry of the great bells waned. In their den, all around the wall, points of magelight flared to life—flickering and purple harbingers of night.
“Will you do it?” Caleb said.
“I don’t know if I have a choice.”
“You do,” Caleb said. “The worst-case scenario is that Da’leth tries to talk, and we…deal with that.”
“We’ve been trying to deal with him for years,” Essek said. “And…maybe this is bold of me to say, but the worst-case scenario isn’t that—it’s not knowing. Maybe I can…maybe I can find the answers here. If Da’leth thinks he is controlling me, if he trusts me to do his bidding, maybe I can finally learn something to break his hold.”
“As long as he never truly controls you,” Caleb said. “That is a risk I cannot accept.”
This time, Essek was the one to offer assurance. He gently pressed a kiss to Caleb’s hand.
“You forget,” he said wryly. “I am a powerful wizard. Haven’t you heard my title?”
“Shadowhand?” Caleb said. He did not look fully mollified, but he managed a chuckle. “I thought you were retired.”
Essek smiled. “I was, my love, but now it seems that I have a new role. Starting soon...you will be sharing your home with the next Headmaster of the Soltryce Academy.”

Detective Conan Deconstruction/Plot Twists/Subversion's
Howdy!
I've been thinking a lot because I haven't slept or been made sensible enough to see reality through rational means of comprehension.
For a black and white series of tales such as Gosho Aoyama's DCMKverse I can sure think of a multitude of ways to turn it grey. So many dark, bloody possibilities, such a endless plethora of grief, angst, and schadenfreude, of voided bowels and lost innocence, so many terrifying ideas yet so little time...
Anyway, to summarize the contents of all that verbal diarrhea, my mind has created a vast orchestra of sinister ideas that I can't put them all in one or more stories. Some of them I'll use later, some of them I will not. I guess my main inspiration for this stream of consciousness that shouts madly into the abyss of the World Wide Web, is the idea that some intrepid, curious wanderer may come across my inane rantings and be inspired to write their own atrocities.
Or maybe it will the stoke the wondrous imagination of a writer who is more of a sick fuck then I am, (:
There are five areas that can be twisted into something cruel. They contain the following:
Cases
Heists
Romance
Character Flaws
Black Organization
Get it on!
Case’s
Suspect Gets The Last Laugh- Killer is revealed but manages to poison the victim with Ricin or something more subtle allowing the target to die a couple days later. Simple enough.
More Then One Killer- The killer is caught! However a quick look back at the scene reveals he wasn’t alone and he ain’t spilling the beans.
Hannibal Lector Wannabe- A killer decides to fuck with our beloved Teen Detectives by playing a game of manipulation and horror while he threatens their loved ones into continuing.
Escaping Through Statute Of Limitations- When Our Teen Detectives decide to give their customary breaking speech,
Killer Gets Out Of It, Now After Detectives- The killer proves much too clever and sees through our casts tricks. Maybe he begin’s to notice Conan’s con and swears revenge out of his ego.
Loved Ones Hurt In The Crossfire- They were too quick for Conan’s soccer ball, Heiji’s sword, Kogoro’s Judo, or Division One’s reflexes. The bullets, blades, bludgeons. and Pelvic Thrusts couldn’t be avoided and the innocent were hurt before they could be saved.
It’s Too Much All At Once- When the cast see a suspect state his intention to kill himself, especially in the early episodes, the cast would dare them to do it, thinking it is a bluff. It isn’t.
All For Naught- Going down a dark rabbit hole isn’t worth it, if a killer turns out to have escaped or has been dead for a long time.
Big Troll- There was no murder or kidnapping, they just wanted to humiliate them.
Green Mistake- Not all detectives succeed at once. Sometimes they make mistakes... Okay just here me out here. I sincerely doubt that all those amateur detectives despite their talent have a perfect track record in solving cases or even not getting a innocent person hurt. Just look at Heiji’s, Kogoro’s, and Sera’s early (or in Kogoro’s case many) mistakes. It’s statistically impossible to get it right all the time.
Victim Is Worse- Conan and the gang successfully prevent a client from being murdered. The criminal screams at them, telling them how evil he was, and how this was mistake. When they learn of the clients sick actions, they understand why.
Romance
Waiting For Someone Who Is No Longer There- Lets think about the situation between Shinichi and Ran for a sec. if your like me you come to a unfortunate realization that was also in the OVA “Stranger In 10 Years.” Shinichi may never get back to the way he was. Maybe there is no antidote. What if he disappears in that time? And I don’t mean move on, I mean dies without anyone knowing. Ran now has to deal with both a missing Shinichi and a vanished Conan. Yet, throughout her whole life Ran holds out hope, waiting for them. Waiting for Shinichi to call. She refuses to fall in love with someone else and becomes obsessed with finding them... Until in her old age, she dies.
The Sleeping Sleuth Sleeps Around- Okay just listen to my reasoning here for a sec. I know many of you are probably sharpening their knives in the comments but let’s really think about this for a sec. This is the same Kogoro who smacked the butt of one of the Black Bunnies, and repeatedly motorboats whatever young woman he comes across. I doubt if Eri is okay with that. Plus, alcoholism and nymphomania is not a winning combination. He could easily make a mistake while in his delirium.
Shinichi’s Toxic Jealousy- Once again bear with me on this. I don’t think either Shinichi (or Kogoro for that matter) are evil. They have flaws just like any other person. However, Shinichi can be sort of a dick with it comes to how territorial he is with Ran. Just look at Eisuke. Unlike most of the perverts who are after her, Eisuke is a genuinely nice guy and Shinichi treats him like garbage. That got me thinking... Maybe Shinichi’s claims about wanting Ran to be happy aren’t entirely true. A part of him knows what he’s doing is wrong but a selfish side can’t. What if Shinichi’s jealousy starts to hurt Ran severely? Again it have to be written well so Shinichi doesn’t come off like a unrepentant dick but I think there’s something there.
Character Flaws
Hot Headedness Get You Or Others Killed- This idea concerns Heiji mostly. A rather temperamental fellow isn’t he? Always rushing into danger without thinking or having trouble with guile... Ain’t that a losing combination innit? I wonder how many criminals can take advantage of that eh? How easy it would be to trick Heiji to go into a trap if Kazuha is threatened, how simple it would be to switch a blunted blade with a sharpened one, how effortless it would be to get important information, how utterly painless it would be to manipulate him... Well I’ll leave you lovely sick bastards to come up with more.
Dysfunction Junction- Let’s talk about the Mouri’s. They’re... Not healthy to say the least. With Kogoro’s gambling/drinking/man-whoring problem barely touched upon, as well as his abuse of Conan along with Eri’s absenteeism I can say that’s a huge target for blackmailers, debt collectors, and Count Of Monte Crisco wannabes.
Conan The Gremlin- Y’know for such a seemingly innocent little boy, he sure gets into a lot of trouble don’t he? Murders keep happening around him like a curse, and that animal tranquilizer can’t be healthy for Sonoko and Kogoro... Plus people could find out who he truly is and... Well it would probably be really messy wouldn’t it?
Incompetence From The Police- In all seriousness, let’s think about this for a second. You have a overburdened police dealing with a intense rise in the murder rate, illicit narcotic consumption, and terrorism... But before we can get any further let’s talk about real life Japanese criminal procedure. In Japan you can be held for 21 days in a tiny dark cell without due process or access to a lawyer. Your are also being interrogated with the police officers using abusive tactics such as telling you how ashamed your family would be, something that can’t happen in a culture based on Confucian values. You confess but take it back only to find that you’re basically fucked since Japan has a 99% conviction rate regardless of innocence. If your a drug addict, you are literally considered nonhuman by the public at large and due to the Reaganite standards treatment isn’t a option. If your on death row, you are never told when your going to die and even if innocent is unlikely to get out. Stressed at the rising crime rate, the police refuse to investigate any suspicious death and just like in Osaka (yes this actually happened) will simply not add to the police statistics. If your a police officer what are you to do? Just a few years ago there was so little crime and now your stressed to the bone. You’re largely conservative and full of pride so you won’t admit that you must change tactics. This quick jump to conclusions and borderline incompetence can be seen in so many episodes of Detective Conan that’s it’s a wonder that more people haven’t been wrongfully convicted or got away with it... Or perhaps they have.
Black Organization
Government Corruption- Given how much sway the BO has, it got me thinking. What if everything wrong with the Japanese Government is because the BO IS the government. Something sorta akin to how the Russian Mob are basically government officials. So many possibilities other then the usual blackmail, assassinations, and bombings. Electoral fraud, jury tampering, manufacturing consent, subtle revisions of the law to encroach on democratic rights such as those the Third Way, and Neoconservatives did in the west. So many more subtle yet intriguing ways to go about this! Perhaps the BO serves as a lobbying for other more savory companies that proudly align with them such as legalizing gambling or deregulating protections.
Caught!- The BO discovers Conan’s true identity. Hell follows.
Heists
Heist Bombing- Some madman or maybe the MK organization decides to bomb the Kid Heist. Lots of people die, are traumatized and have to deal with the aftermath. I’ll leave the rest up to you guys.
Crazy Fans- Self explanatory until you really think about it. If Kaito Kid is real in this universe, how toxic is the fandom? How many of them have pedophilic undertones with the beloved Kid Killer? What if a stalker discovers Kaito’s real identity and goes psychotic? Riots could happen! So many possibilities! Doesn’t have to dark like in my sick mind, can be played for laughs.
One last thing, because of how long this took to write, a certain beloved detective’s birthday is here.

The Magicians Revisited: 1x04 The World in the Walls
Significant moments:
As part of Marina’s plan to steal from Brakebills, she’s done a cooperative spell with Julia to mess with Quentin’s mind in order to trick Dean Fogg into lowering the protective wards around the school. I’m assuming she picked Quentin because it’s a powerful cooperative spell so she needs a strong witch like Julia, and Julia’s mad enough at Quentin to be able to use him as a target. Julia might not be willing to trap just any random student into a hell-dream, but she’s pissed enough at Quentin to do it to him. The dream itself is a mishmash of the hospitals he’s spent time in with elements of Brakebills, and it preys on his own thoughts and twists them.
So, potentially, twisted reflections of what’s in Q’s mind — Dean Fogg becomes another authority figure, a doctor. Both Eliot and Alice are very sexually aggressive towards Quentin, and Q turns Penny into a janitor with a heavy accent (which real!Penny calls out as racist of Q’s subconscious).
Julia, otoh, is the actual Julia. Which… man, oh there is so much ugliness to unpack there. Actual, real Julia takes malicious joy at Quentin’s pain in her first scene, and only starts to be worried/concerned in her second, when Q has gone past being freaked out and is so mentally burnt out that he’s non-responsive.
As Julia is leaving from her second visit with Quentin, real!Penny walks into the dream/spell. He sees fake!Penny and is instantly offended which, you know, fair. Anyway, Q asks Penny to find him in the real world and wake him up, and that, at 23-24 minutes into the episode, is the first time we leave Quentin’s head.
On a more acting-based level, I feel like this kind of episode only works when the actor has a rock-solid understanding of who their character is and how their character sees themselves and isn’t afraid to embrace the uglier sides of their character, and I’m pretty impressed at how strong a grip Jason Ralph has on Quentin only four episodes into the show.
In the scene with Julia and Marina, Julia expresses concern over what the spell is doing to Q, and we see that Kady has been watching, too, and Marina is definitely aware of Kady’s relationship with Penny at this time. Kady is also concerned at the idea that the spell could potentially trap Q in his own mind forever. When the later attempt by the Dean and Penny to break Q out of the spell fails, Kady goes to Julia to tell her to reverse the spell because Q might never wake up otherwise. Julia goes to the Dean & Co. and confesses that she cast the spell.
One big thing that this episode does is soften the antagonism between Q and Penny — ironically, being a little inside Q’s head pissed Penny off, but when he was more deeply inside and exposed to more of the trauma Q was going through, he became angry at Julia on Q’s behalf for putting him through that. It did this to a certain extent with Kady and Q, too.
With Jane’s help, Quentin is able to pull himself out of the Web even when the Dean seems pretty certain he’s fucked. Jane looks damn proud of him for it, too. Eliot, the Dean, and Penny are all visibly relieved that he’s awake again. Julia is guilt-stricken as, you know, she should be. Looking forward, I’m relatively sure this is the ugliest thing that actual, shade-having Julia ever does to anyone. Anyway, not only has she set fire (for now) to her relationship with Quentin, she also gets kicked out of Marina’s hedge witch group for betraying Marina.
In Q’s last scene in his head, we get him quoting from the books, “Jane saw only one way out for him: stop playing, start living”, which ties into the “live your life here” throughline that’s been thrown at Q a few times over the course of the series. That’s also tied into the ‘stop overthinking’ theme that Q gets a lot, too. Q runs into issues when he lives inside his head instead of living his actual life in the real world, and this nightmare that Julia and Marina trapped him in is just an extreme manifestation of that tendency of his.
That’s actually also related to that flaw of his that I mentioned in the 1x03 post — where he holds other people accountable for his emotions. That’s him living like he’s in a Scarlatti Web all the time, where other people are just projections of his fears and desires rather than being, well, other people. And that’s the epiphany that he has during the endgame of the Beast arc when he gives the… god’s come… to Alice instead of drinking it himself (what is this show that I had to write out that sentence). That he is not the sole protagonist, that he is not the only person who has emotional importance. And that life is actually better when he embraces that truth, because it means that he can actually see other people for who they are and not as echoes of his own thoughts. It was really great character growth, until- well.
Magic:
1. Quentin "wakes up" trapped in a mental world created by a cooperative spell cast by Julia and Marina called a Scarlatti Web.
2. Quentin is able to cast a fireworks spell while in the Web.
3. Jane is able to penetrate the spell enough to send a vision of her younger self to Q to try to get him to work on breaking the spell by giving him hints about where to look.
4. There was a magician in Fillory named Ellesworth Downs, who was cursed by a witch to only be able to cast game magic.
5. Kady tries to cast healing magic on Q; it fails.
6. Marina uses a spell to light her cigarette.
7. The wards are lowered to allow the bug-spirit in to save Quentin.
8. Marina uses magic to get into the room where the stolen memories are kept.
9. Jane is able to get to Q again after the first part of the spell is broken, and she tries to let him know how to get out of the spell.
10. Marina pulls Julia to her side.
11. Marina crosses out Julia’s hedge witch stars and kicks her out of the bodega.

Fake!Alice grabs Q’s face and kisses him.
Julia reaches out to touch Q’s hand during her visit to him. She brushes his hair out of his face.
Fake!Penny grabs Q’s hand to show that Q was palming pills instead of swallowing them.
Q grabs pages out of his fake roommate’s hands to keep him from destroying the books.
Q touches several of the residents of his mind during his musical number.
Q shares a hug with his fake father.
Fake!Eliot and Fake!Alice do some very close sitting with Quentin during the montage after he’s been told that he tried to kill his father.
Julia touches Q’s knee in her second visit with him.
Penny shoves Quentin against the wall. Q shoves him back, Penny shoves him back harder (as requested).
Marina smacks Kady’s ass.
Q pickpockets one of the fake nurses for a key into the office to finally get some tape to fix the pages of the book.
Penny shoulder-checks Eliot a bit (not too hard) as they’re looking for Q’s body.
Penny slaps Q’s face to try to wake him up.
Fake!Penny and another fake employee of the hospital haul Quentin off to get the lobotomy.
Dean Fogg touches Q’s forehead after the attempt at breaking Q out of the spell.
Eliot pets Q on the head after he’s woken up from the spell.
Character Notes:
Quentin: he last saw his dad (Ted) a few months ago; they had dinner.
Actual Alice, in real life, does not appear in this episode. Only the fake Alice in Q’s head.

Travelers - Season Two Review
Travelers is about people from a far flung and terrible future who have chosen to have their consciousness transferred into the bodies of 21st century individuals who are about to die. Working in teams of five, each with a specialty, their Grand Plan is to use their knowledge and skills to actively change the future into something better. Travelers stars Nesta Cooper as tactician Carly Shannon; Eric McCormack as team leader Grant MacLaren; Jared Abrahamson as engineer Trevor Holden; MacKenzie Porter as medic Marcy Warton; and Reilly Dolman as historian Philip Pearson.
This series is my cup of television tea. It effectively combines time travel shenanigans with the extreme difficulties involved in masquerading as another person. I particularly like how the lead characters must balance using their own judgment when carrying out their assigned missions while also making every day decisions about how to carry out the lives of their hosts. When done well, this sort of thing can make for intriguing and enjoyable drama, and Travelers does it well.
Season one was good. Season two is even better. And here is where I will insert the standard spoiler warning in the form of a spoiler kitten: if you haven't seen season two yet and you plan to get around to it, may I suggest that you bookmark this review and come back later?
Arguably, the biggest unanswered mysteries of season one were (1) who kidnapped and tortured our team in season one, and (2) what is happening with the Faction, who were trying to overthrow the Director (the AI who runs the Travelers project).
Although everything wasn't revealed immediately, the first question was answered with the introduction of Traveler 001, the very first Traveler, who overwrote one of the Twin Tower victims on September 11 and then refused to die as scheduled. They made me happy by casting Enrico Colantoni (Veronica Mars) as Traveler 001, and then doubled my happiness by casting Amanda Tapping as his confused psychologist.
While season one explored the personal lives of our Travelers and the difficulties they encountered integrating themselves into the already existing lives of their hosts, season two focused on it even more strongly – particularly on Grant's marriage to Kat, Marcy's romance with David, and Carly's custody battle for her baby with his father, Jeff. These personal issues culminated in the season finale with the multiple kidnappings and Traveler 001 blackmailing the team to reveal their true selves on video.
While Eric McCormack does a consistently good job as the show's lead and I liked Grant's story dealing with his wife Kat's unexpected, difficult pregnancy, the most compelling personal relationship on the show is by far and away Marcy's with David Mailer (Patrick Gilmore), her former social worker.
When Marcy, a doctor, initially arrived in her host's damaged body, she had to use her advanced medical knowledge to stay alive, knowing that her efforts were futile and she would eventually die. The ultimate cure for her condition, overwriting different parts of her brain, left her a semi-emotionless amnesiac. I really liked that Marcy couldn't leave the situation as it was, that she found a way to retrieve her interim memories and some of her host's in order to repair her relationship with David, an exceptionally good human being who also kept making me laugh out loud throughout the season. My favorite bit was when David copied Marcy's lottery numbers and won $31,000, and spent the best day of his life giving every dime away to his homeless clients. What a guy. Seriously.
Another consistently enjoyable continuing character is Grace Day (Jennifer Spence), an outspoken programmer from the future who overwrote Trevor's high school guidance counselor. Although I think Trevor got a bit shortchanged in the personal story arena this season; his initial paralysis situation and discovering that his football coach had abused his host were stories that just came and went. I like all five of our leads, but for some reason, Trevor is my favorite. Maybe it's the idea of a quiet, wise and observant elderly man living in the body of someone so young.
I also liked Philip's continuing efforts to battle his addiction. Philip is the only traveler with no family to juggle, and it was fun that he decided to assuage his loneliness by adopting a turtle. I was also interested in his struggle to keep up with the changes in the timeline. I connected less with Carly's storyline, though. I felt frustrated with her decision to live with her abusive boyfriend in order to regain custody of her baby. Although the way she beat the crap out of Jeff when he finally got drunk and tried to hurt her was satisfying.
Clearly, the team cannot reveal who they are to anyone, but I kept wanting Marcy in particular to tell David the truth. Be careful what you wish for, because now David, Kat and Jeff (and the confused Ray) do know the truth. If we get a third season, and I certainly hope that we do, that's a major problem for our team. Well, that, along with Travelers being tracked as a terrorist group by worldwide law enforcement, whatever was going on with the unfortunate Simon, and the ongoing efforts of Traveler 001 who is now played by Amanda Tapping.
This series probably won't turn out to be a classic, but it definitely improves upon acquaintance and it's quite binge-able. I rewatched season one before diving into season two, and enjoyed it even more the second time. I've been trying to think of another series like Travelers, and I can't; it's not like anything else. It's nothing like the big recent network effort, Timeless, which did things like recreate the Lincoln assassination. Travelers is more focused on complex characters dealing with unique situations, making it more closely resemble, say, Continuum.

-- I'm not sure I could pick a favorite episode this season, although I particularly enjoyed "001," the exciting and often amusing season finale, Grace's trial in "Traveler 0027," and the Groundhog Day episode with the skydivers, "17 Minutes."
-- I always enjoy the complications when our team interacts with other teams, particularly Louis Ferreira as team leader Rick Hall.
-- Speaking of Continuum, Travelers now includes three Continuum cast members: Jennifer Spence as Grace, Stephen Lobo as Wakefield, and Ian Tracey as Ray.
-- I keep wanting them to clean up their garage ops. Especially that filthy bathroom.

Star Wars Resistance: “The High Tower”-Review
When the First Order arrives on the Colossus, Kaz must put his skills as a spy to the test in “The High Tower,” which proves to be the strongest episode of Resistance so far.

Amidst a rash of power outages, Kaz hears rumors that Captain Doza (Jason Hightower) may have connections with the First Order. When Major Elrik Vonreg and an escort of Stormtroopers arrive on the station, Kaz becomes determined to find a way to eavesdrop on their potential dealings with Doza. Soon an opportunity presents itself as he learns of a former friendship between crewmate Tam and cocky, Rodian Ace Pilot, Hype Fazon (Donald Faison).
In terms of presentation and characterization, “The High Tower” is undoubtedly the strongest work the team behind Resistance has presented so far. It plays off existing storylines from the premiere in interesting new ways, we learn about the various cast members, and the main plot finally gains momentum. Kaz even does some actual spying! And he’s not actually that bad at it! In a series that showed promise if not immediate cause for celebration, “The High Tower” is a step in the right direction.
In particular, it is nice to finally begin to learn more about the varied life on the station. The Colossus continues to be a standout setting and it is nice that four episodes in, we are still learning tantalizing new things about its habits and inhabitants.
Most positively, Tam finally comes into focus this week. After spending three episodes straight as nothing more than the member of Yeager’s team that was least likely to put up with Kazuda’s antics, we finally begin to learn more about her as a person. Stephany Folsom’s script reveals a testy former friendship turned rivalry between her and Hype Fazon. Fazon himself originally grates with his exaggerated ego, but voice actor Donald Faison quickly imbues the hot shot Rodian with a sense of empathy, if not sincerity. Director Steward Lee cleverly blocks the interactions with him and Tam to reveal a sad loss of affection between the two that seems to hint at a genuine want to make things work. It makes for an intriguing character dynamic and provides a further personal connection between Yeager’s team and the Aces outside of Kazuda and Torra’s budding friendship.
As mentioned before, it is also nice to finally get some headway on the overarching plot of the series. While Kazuda is still a little bumbling, it is refreshing to see him making efforts to follow through on his mission that actually show that he has a knack for this thing. It may lead to some drama down the line, but seeing him utilize the platonic history between Hype and Tam to his benefit lays the ground work for political and emotional intrigue. Folsom’s smart use of seeding Neeku’s comlink gag as a potential tool for spycraft is also a neat highlight. You’re better suited for this then we gave you credit, Kaz!
While the chase scene of Kazuda avoiding First Order capture and later execution isn’t sure to be a seasonal highlight, it is nice to see the Resistance team switch up their episodic set pieces and it’s the first that doesn’t involve starships that proves successful. More interestingly though is the continued hints of how The Colossus fits into the First Order’s plans. Seeing Major Vonreg blackmail Doza into submission makes for an interesting tie to the grander conflict even if the greater mystery of why the shadowy organization cares for this station is still a mystery. Combined with Doza’s growing suspicions of Kaz’s own involvement, Resistance is starting to weave its own web of intrigue that will hopefully lead to more exciting mysteries in the future.
As a whole, “The High Tower” makes for the strongest addition to the series so far. It balances its tone well, slowly teases out more of its increasingly extensive supporting cast, and provides interesting new developments to its ongoing story. However, as a standalone installment “The High Tower” does falter. Folsom’s script is more concerned with revealing more about character and plot than charting its own arc and by episode’s end it feels more so like we have watched a series of events unfold rather than a singular story. Kaz’s closing comments seem to indicate that the intent was for him to learn a lesson about the false glamor of life in the High Tower, but this falls flat as the episode’s conflict rose out of his spying mission and not out of any realization regarding the Ace’s comparatively high class life style. It’s an odd moment and it feels like a last minute fix to an episode that feels like a chapter more than an installment.
Regardless, “The High Tower” succeeds and continues to show us the kind of show Resistance can be. With this ever-growing web of characters, agendas, and intrigue, The Colossus may well become a powder keg of tension by season’s end.
