Shardul Thakur Flaglot and Suman Singh enter into a marriage of convenience but chaos ensues when her unhinged girlfriend comes to stay with them.
Don’t get scared by the movie’s length, it actually passes really fast as it’s pretty dynamic so there’s always something going on. It’s really colourful, I liked the whole culture experience you get while watching the movie, so it’s not only an interesting story, but you get more than that and there’s music involved and the acting was good to me. And should I mention the main actor is so handsome? :P The girl is also a sweetheart, very likeable IMO.
I didn’t like how the family kept meddling into their marriage and forcing the tradition on them. There wasn’t too much homophobia, but it was there in a couple of scenes. Despite the comedic approach, it’s still pretty evident the hardships they have to go through in order to live their lives, but it’s not depressing, as it has a happy ending which is much appreciated. I also didn’t like how Shardul expected Suman to clean after him and serve him in the house, but Suman knew how to stand up for herself and Shardul later changed so it got better.

#i have to be up soon..............#i have a lot of thoughts but honestly. that one was more For Me than badhaai do or smzs. and less gut wrenchingly upsetting than ek ladki#i still dont know why ek ladki affected me like that tbh but this was like. also upsetting but the jokes actually landed?#i felt some of the jokes in smzs were awkward but that one was the classic comedy#and madhuri herself 😔😔#this song is so good though wtf. cant believe this is the song i was like YEAH that'll be great for me in this moment

Shardul Thakur is a police officer, who is under constant pressure from his family to get married, but he isn't too keen on the idea because he's gay. Sumi works as a PE teacher and is also being pressured by her family to get married but she is lesbian. She goes to the police to make a harrassment case and meets Shardul. When he guesses that Sumi is lesbian, he proposes a plan: they will get married to get their families off their back. Problems arise, though, when their families continue to meddle in their lives and pressure them to have children.
I love a movie that talks about acceptance and realisation and the whole journey that comes with a queer character. So having not 1 but multiple such characters, especially in a desi setting, was really fun to watch. As with bollywood, this had a mix of everything; drama, humour, annoyingly invasive family members and a happy ending. It made me laugh so much, it also made me cry. It was perfect. Enjoyed watching this so much.

I can’t sleep. Top 5 Gay Movies of 2022
5. La Santa Piccola - very different from your usual gay movies, but the scenery is gorgerous and the story made me feel things
4. Badhaai Do - amazing queer representation in Indian Cinema, "gay guy and a lesbian woman enter into holy matrimony to appease their families”... just pure comedy and romance and the friendship is beautiful
3. Fire Island - a classic rom-com, must-see
2. In from the Side - rugby gays, affair, romance... all of that
1. Sublime - since it’s finally available on VoD, I had a chance to watch it this weekend and the soundtrack and story got me... Mi mejor amigo vibes but actually gay

5. Heartstopper - a classic, it was honestly hard to rate the shows because they’re all equally brilliant in my eyes

5. Catalina - a queer man and his two childhood best friends reunite for a weekend camping trip on Catalina Island... could there be sumn more?
4. Too Rough - Nick wakes up next to his boyfriend Charlie and must conceal him from his own homophobic and dysfunctional family... very sad
3. Jean est tombé amoureux - two football players of opposite teams falling in love... mm very good!
2. Swim - two swimmers develop a strong friendship during their weekly sessions, but their relationship is tested outside the pool, when true identities are revealed... this one fawked me up good
1. Hard - Mikey experiences awkwardness and struggles to navigate the uncertainties of his sexuality after his first time with a girl doesn't go as expected, forcing him to confront his feelings of desire for his best friend... this was so much fun to watch
Top 5 Upcoming Gay Movies in 2023
5. The History of Sound - Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor in a gay romance period drama? We’re looking forward to that actually! Anyways, they were supposed to film it this year, but they had busy schedules. Current plan is next year. Also Paul was hanging out with the director last month, so maybe something’s cooking.
4. Glitter & Doom - described as a summer romance musical feature told with the iconic tunes of folk duo Indigo Girls. Film follows a musician who wears charisma as camouflage and a carefree guy about to run away with the circus as they fall in love at first sight. Sounds fun.
3. Nuovo Olimpo - any Ferzan Özpetek fans? Any Manuel from Un professore fans? Well, looks like we won. Period drama set in Italy, following two men who have a chance encounter and then fall deeply in love, and then are torn apart. The film then follows them both over the next decades as they attempt to find each other again.
2. Strangers - yes, another one with Paul Mescal... yes, I’m crazy. And hi Andrew Scott. Directed by Andrew Haigh (Weekend, HBO’s Looking). Word on the street is that their characters will be romantically involved since Mescal's character corresponds to a woman who has a romance with the protagonist (Scott) in the original novel. We will be tuning in.
1. Bonus Track - film set in 2006, follows a small-town boy with dreams of being a gifted musician. When the son of an iconic musical duo enrols at his school, a powerful bond between the boys begins to grow. Based on an original story by Josh O'Connor (yes, him) and Michael Gilbert.
Anyways, that is it. There are a lot of movies that weren’t released THIS year yet, and I’m looking forward to them (Punch, Aristotle and Dante, Spoiler Alert,...). But I would be just repeating myself, so I’m not gonna talk about that.

If you could go back to school, would you?
Yes, absolutely! If I could afford it, both time and money wise, I'd love to just study and learn everything I can. If it were more worth it I'd love to be (an academic, not medical) Dr. Potato. Perhaps in another life/world/universe/timeline.
Can you parallel park?
I have never tried it! It is a skill I have yet to learn.
A job you had that would surprise people?
I have yet to be employed!
Can you drive a manual car?
Not yet! (But I found out today that apparently learning how to do so is in my future).
Tattoos?
Not yet! I'd love to have something floral one day, preferably by an artist of colour/someone with experience tattooing colourful pieces on brown skin.
Favorite color?
I love all colours! Though I'm quite fond of bright colours or pastels. Especially pinks, purples, and oranges!
Do you like puzzles?
Yes, I do!
Any phobias?
I have many that I would rather not share. Many of them are common.
Favorite childhood sport?
I was not good at it in the technical sense, but I enjoyed soccer. I received a certificate for the fact that I never stopped smiling.
Do you talk to yourself?
Yes, a lot! Sometimes I have my own potatocast, which no one can listen to as it only exists in my mind.
What movies do you adore?
Oh, I love a documentary that discusses the history of a particular medium, or ones that discuss relevant social history. I also love musicals and comedies, and musical comedies. I love exploring international cinema as well. Oh! Also, fun theatrical adaptations. I love movies that reflect experiences of the diaspora. Some actual titles: Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, Badhaai Do, Four Samosas, Theater Camp, and The Wiz
Coffee or tea?
Coffee as tiramisu and tea with a frightening amount of condensed milk. (Secret third answer: milk or juice or water).
First thing you wanted to be growing up?
A firefighter. I do not want to be a firefighter any more.

the movie needed the most
firstly go watch this movie and then come read this, because what. a. movie.
holy shit, is this movie was hilarious with its witty one liners and clever situational comedy! the leads and cast all have great chemistry with each other and the banter feels natural and spontaneous. especially loved the subtle and hilarious dynamic with sundar and rimjim!
i burst into tears 3/4 into this movie. without any spoilers, there is one absolute masterpiece of a scene that gets straight to your heart. this movie understands what is like to be both desi and queer and nails the complex south asian family dynamic without being a stereotype.
the last 20 minutes of the movie is pure QUEER JOY. this is a movie with a happy ending and you, the audience, are entitled to it. you deserve positive representation; you deserve to see healthy and happy lgbt+ relationships.
badhaai do is written FOR queer audiences. the writing and directing does an incredible job of portraying growing with the fear of being queer in an unaccepting environment as well as protraying true self-love and queer joy in finding pride in yourself.
this is such a vital movie. it is NEEDED by queer youth, by older lgbt+ people finding their identity, by allies who want to unlearn homophobia. it is a movie i needed. it’s one i wished i had earlier in my life. it could’ve changed everything for me, but i’m glad it’s out (pun intended) there for other people. because, god knows, desi lgbt+ people need to be seen.

Genuine delight at the family gathering full of legit everyone + the marriage discussion and how the son gets so much more choice + although I don't speak Hindi, I understand tiny bits because of its similarity to Bengali

I love watching East or South East Asian media because it has similarities to my South Asian culture and I enjoy seeing these similarities that I wouldn't see in Western shows. However, seeing an actual South Asian movie where the culture is so similar to mine (different religions, so not quite the same) is so good! Family everywhere and all of them nosy! Familial pressure from all sides! The CNGs that they rode! The hustle and bustle of the city and of life! Hindi's similar to Bengali! Unfamiliar with the ultimate acceptance from many family members though lol but I can live vicariously through them I guess.
Sumi and Rimjhim (love her name) are so freaking beautiful. They were so beautiful.
I didn't like Shardul (lmfao patriarchal cop mans) but I guess... this movie wasn't necessarily about liking him. He deserves rights and for his queerness to be accepted even if I don't like him. I wish we got some more of the lawyer mans and Shardul, he was the most interesting character for sure.
Happy ending, funny moments, tinged with some sadness and struggles. I enjoyed it.
Rating: 7.5/10 hmm

Romantic comedy: Qarib Qarib Singlle, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Love Per Square Foot, Action Replayy, Luka Chuppi (I actually don’t remember if I saw this or not lol), Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (There are probably a ton of romantic comedies you’d like but I tend not to watch them so much so explore on your own! :) )
Dark comedy: Peepli Live, Blackmail (2018), Ishqiya
Crime/mystery/thriller: Raat Akeli Hai, Kahaani, Mom, Badla, Te3n
Crime/mystery/action: Dhrishyam (2015), Singham, Andhadhun
Road films: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Karwaan, Highway (this film is emotionally heavier than the other two)
Sports-related drama: Paan Singh Tomar, Dangal, Lagaan
Drama (generally more lighthearted): Three Idiots (this movie is a classic), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (fun and sweet film), Hindi Medium, English Vinglish, Badhaai Ho, Badhaai Do (deals with serious topics in a generally more lighthearted way, climax is more serious and emotional), Pad Man, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Rocket Singh
Drama (generally more serious): The Lunchbox, Sonchiriya, Masaan, Ship of Theseus, Manto, Udta Punjab (deals with drug addiction—good movie but I also don’t want to watch it ever again :( )
Others:
Rang De Basanti
Haider (based on Hamlet but set in Kashmir, deals with political conflicts)
Gangs of Wasseypur (two-part film looking at the multigenerational rivalry between two crime families, I love the soundtrack)
Stree (comedy “”horror”” but it’s honestly not scary—I don’t like horror either! —and I really enjoyed it)
Manmarziyan (somewhere between romantic comedy and a more emotionally serious drama—wasn’t sure whether to recommend this or not because people seem kind of polarized on it as far as Anurag Kashyap films go)
Padmavat (historical drama with some action, villain was one-dimensional though)
I guess Jodha Akbaar is worth checking out too for historical romance? I actually didn’t finish watching it though.... 😅

Happy Queer Media Monday!
Today: Badhai Do (2022)
(Title translates to “Give the Good News”)
(The two main characters hiding in a closet, from a promotional poster.)
Badhaai Do is an Indian comedy movie about a gay police officer and a lesbian sports teacher, who get married in hopes of getting their families to stop nagging them about being single. Hijinks ensue, as they both pursue their own romantic relationships on the side, try to keep up the semblance of a good couple, and need to find an explanation about why after a year, they still don’t have any children.
It is a funny movie, that is clearly made with the aim to humanize queer people and champion equal rights, which it is really good at. It also has a very realistic feeling to it. I have no doubt that many queer people have lived, and are still living, this exact same life. It is especially nice that, all in all, it is a happy story. We as a community do tend to have a slight tendency to assume that the only way of being happy is to be 100% out, which is why we really need more stories like this or The Blue Caftan (2022), where gay people in more traditional societies live perfectly happy and fulfilled lives.
Badhaai Do is available on Netflix.
Queer Media Monday is an action I started to talk about some important and/or interesting parts of our queer heritage, that people, especially young people who are only just beginning to discover the wealth of stories out there, should be aware of.
