10 Favourite Series/Movies I watched in 2022
(Fave Movie for @asianlgbtnetwork 2022 Recap)
Badhaai Do (dir. Harshavardhan Kulkarni)
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Starring: Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, Chum Darang
Language: Hindi
Shardul Thakur is a police officer, who is under constant pressure from his family to get married, but he isn't too keen on the idea because he's gay. Sumi works as a PE teacher and is also being pressured by her family to get married but she is lesbian. She goes to the police to make a harrassment case and meets Shardul. When he guesses that Sumi is lesbian, he proposes a plan: they will get married to get their families off their back. Problems arise, though, when their families continue to meddle in their lives and pressure them to have children.
I love a movie that talks about acceptance and realisation and the whole journey that comes with a queer character. So having not 1 but multiple such characters, especially in a desi setting, was really fun to watch. As with bollywood, this had a mix of everything; drama, humour, annoyingly invasive family members and a happy ending. It made me laugh so much, it also made me cry. It was perfect. Enjoyed watching this so much.

10 Favourite Series/Movies I watched in 2022
Naam (dir. T. Suriavelan )
Genre: Mystery, Romance, Drama, Music
Starring: Stephen Zechariah, T. Suriavelan, Rupiny Anbalagan, Vikneswary Se, Abbdul Kather, Gosteloa Spancer, Alawdin Ali, Pooja Arivananthan
Language: Tamil
Naam depicts the lives of 6 passionate musicians who struggle to find a stage to prove their talents. Coming from various backgrounds and rejections, the mismatched individuals' gel in a unique way to produce compelling music like never before. However, jealousy and betrayal breaks the group. At present, an unwelcome entry of an intruder has given them the opportunity to reminisce and reflect their mistakes. With lives at stake, will the band survive the night?
The edit for this is music focused because that is the reason why I watched this series. I love the songs. It has been a year, but I am still obsessed with the songs. Adi Penne was my top played song of 2022. Plot wise, I loved the suspense of trying to figure what was going on and what the motivation was. I also loved the flashbacks of how the group came together, all the obstacles they faced and how they overcame it to become successful. And eventually what broke them apart. It was very interesting. I, personally, didn’t feel too strongly for the motivation behind the events, but I can understand why it happened that way.

Trigger warnings are under the cut.
Trigger Warning: Violence, Police brutality, Death.
Please do check out the synopsis and reviews before you watch the movie. I watched it with my parents and we were all affected after the movie. It made us angry and mad, but it also did affect us psychologically and affected our moods. It is not an easy or fun watch, but it is such a good movie. It addresses police brutality, police coercion and casteism.
