Iwaizumi x f!reader

Summary: Y/n has a mission to complete. Iwaizumi’s friend is in town.

Word count: 3k

Warnings: work stress mentioned, alcohol + bar location, y/n makes bad choices (following a stranger to a second location, hanging out with the person she should probably avoid), also is kind of a creep (the creepy-ness won't last i swear), some people are drunk, including Oikawa, bless him, best boy is also best wingman, kinda, y/n refuses to put real names in her phone contacts, someone gets dumped/ghosted, Oikawa is so drunk

a/n: I introduced an OC in this part, Mizuki. I hope you come to love her. As someone who kins Oikawa, I gave him my “drunk persona” for the bar scene. He’ll be normal later, I swear.

Part 3: So We Meet Again

It was no secret among Y/n’s friends that she loved to visit the bars in downtown Osaka, but a locally owned bar in Ikuno was a favorite of hers when she wanted a change in scenery. It was small and cozy with friendly staff. Besides university students, mostly middle-aged men frequented here, but everyone seemed to mind their own business and leave her alone, as she preferred.

Double doors closing behind her, she was met with the sounds of chatter from other patrons and classic rock playing from the sound system. The smell of alcohol was not overwhelming and someone definitely has hot wings. The dark oak counter was straight ahead, lined in front with at least a dozen matching stools with black leather on the seats, and shelves of alcohol bottles behind. Booths lined the side walls and high tables with stools were spread amongst the center.

She walked up to a part of the counter no one was occupying and waved to the bartender. A short middle-aged woman with dark hair, only slightly peppered with grey. She usually worked here when y/n visited, but she could never remember her name and felt too awkward to ask for it again.

“Hey sweetie! You haven’t been in here in awhile! I was wondering if I was gonna see you again,” the woman spoke cheerfully as she always does, “What can I get for you? Something fruity or thinking something different tonight?”

She smiled at the bartender. “You can’t get rid of me that easily,” she winked, “And I’m thinkin’.. strawberry vodka-Sprite.”

“Can do!” She leaned in closer with a grin, “Should I make that strong?”

She leaned in as well, grinning back, “Hmm.. Why not.”

“I’ll get right on it,” the bartender took off and got to work on the drink. She went ahead and grabbed money for the women, dropping it on the counter in front of her with a hand resting over it as she looked around the bar. Sometimes a friend or two would be here and she’d invite herself to their table, otherwise she usually just picked a stool at the counter and chatted with whoever was bartending that night.

“Here ya go, sweetie,” the woman placed a short glass in front of her and Y/n pushed the money towards her.

“Thank you,” she picked up the drink and hopped onto a stool, spinning her back to the counter as she sipped the drink; tending to be more comfortable with people watching than socializing with strangers. A table to the left was full of older gentlemen, two of them seemed to be arguing, and oh look, they have the hot wings. Some college girls were squealing over something nearby, colorful drinks on their table. She continued looking around the bar, idly sipping her vodka-Sprite, relaxing after a long day of work.

Eventually, a man’s voice caught her attention from the right corner of the bar. He has styled brown hair and seems pretty tall now that he’s standing in his booth, waving his hands around while yelling. Is he telling a story or fighting with the other guy at his table? The other guy growled something at him with a smack to one of his flailing hands.

Buzzing in her coat pocket grabbed her attention from the two. Lifting her phone she saw a text notification from a friend. Turning to face the counter once more and setting down her glass, she opened the text.

Mizuki’s never ending boy trouble it seems. Her taste in men usually didn’t end well for her; meaning she often had to console a sad or angry Mizuki. She brought her drink to her lips to sip at while she texted her friend.

>> To ‘My Best Bitch <3’: “is that so”

>> From ‘My Best Bitch <3’: “im serious! we made plans and he ditched me”

>> From ‘My Best Bitch <3’: “AGAIN!!”

Didn’t she just say the other night that she wasn’t seeing this guy anymore? Either way, her plans are ruined and she’s not happy. She’s probably looking for someone else to hang out with tonight and vent to.

>> To ‘My Best Bitch <3’: “okay okay I’m sorry”

>> From ‘My Best Bitch <3’: “are you home?”

Someone was now standing beside y/n ordering a drink. The sudden voice next to her had her glancing up by instinct. Only to immediately snap her head back to her phone, now leaning over the counter with it. Hair falling around her face.

It’s him.

Shit.

Well this wasn’t in the plan for tonight. So much for unwinding at the bar. She’s now fully winded and on edge.

>> To ‘My Best Bitch <3’: “no I’m out. Sorry.”

>> From ‘My Best Bitch <3’: “where?”

>> To ‘My Best Bitch <3’: “in Ikuno”

Raising her head, she sees the man from outside the woods is no longer next to her. Phone buzzing once more as she takes a gulp of the vodka-Sprite.

>> From ‘My Best Bitch <3’: “ugh are you at that dive bar?”

>> To ‘My Best Bitch <3’: “its nice here. You can join me if you want”

>> From ‘My Best Bitch <3’: “no thanks”

>> From 'My Best Bitch <3': “When will you be home?”

>> To ‘My Best Bitch <3’: “i just got here.”

The bartender appeared once more and offered a refill now that her glass was pretty much empty. She nodded and thanked her.

>> To ‘My Best Bitch <3’: “what about blondie? I think he’s been dying to hang out”

Should she go see her? Probably. But Y/n’s on a spontaneous mission and her bestie was always up for a slumber party anyway, so he can help her vent and get all these negative emotions out. She looked over her shoulder to see if the man was nearby, only to catch his gaze from his spot at the table with the brunette man she determined to most likely be his friend. Neither of them are blinking and she mentally curses herself. Back to back buzzing broke her staring contest and she checked Mizuki’s messages.

>> From ‘My Best Bitch <3’: “yeah i guess he’s free.”

>> From 'My Best Bitch <3': “He’s coming to my place.”

>> From 'My Best Bitch <3': “If you get bored you know where to find us.”

The bartender handed over a new drink and she once again immediately paid for it.

What am I going to do about this? He’s staring too much to not know, right?

I could be overthinking this.

>> To ‘My Best Bitch <3’: “love you. Sorry your date was a dick.”

But it couldn’t hurt to keep an eye on him for now.

Once again looking over her shoulder, a new vodka-Sprite in hand, she gained some courage. Some. She could always abort the mission and was sure the nice lady behind the counter would save her if she came running. Hopping off her stool and walking toward the two men’s booth, the brunette looked her way and offered a smile.

“Hello, pretty lady,” the brunette’s smile turned smug, “What do we owe the pleasure?”

Once he spoke, the other man looked in her direction, looking a little surprised. “Hey..”

“Hey there,” looking between the men before she continued. What’s the plan here again? “Mind some extra company? I was chatting with the bartender, but she seems busy.”

“Of course! You seem harmless enough. I’m Oikawa Tooru,” he waved a hand towards the other man, “And this is Iwa-chan.”

“Iwaizumi,” Iwa-chan intercepted.

“Y/n. Are ya sure I’m not interrupting you two?”

She sat next to Iwaizumi after he shook his head, “Oikawa has been retelling a story I already know.”

Oikawa looked insulted, “I come to visit and you’re going to complain?!”

“Oh, you guys aren’t from around here?”

Plan decided. Well, half a plan. A mini plan until she figures things out later - but there needs to be a later. Find out where he lives or at least get his number in the case that he does actually know about the whole wolf thing, so she can find him if needed. Getting his number should be easy enough; if not Iwaizumi’s, then probably Oikawa’s. Because she is a pretty lady.

Thanks, Oikawa.

“Well, no, weren’t not, but he doesn’t even live in Japan anymore,” Iwaizumi pointed to his friend.

So maybe Oikawa is out.

“We grew up together in Miyagi,” Oikawa chimed in, “but I moved away to become an amazing setter in Argentina! He moved chasing dreams too.” He winked at Iwaizumi, who completely ignored it.

“You’ve always been an amazing setter,” Iwaizumi brought his beer to his lips.

“So you live in Japan still?” She asked, swirling the straw around in her drink.

He didn’t have the chance to answer before Oikawa answered for him, “Yup! But enough of that. What brings you to this place? There’s so many nicer bars and clubs in Osaka.”

“I found this place back in college. There are lots of options here, but this place is one of my favorites.”

He shot a disgusted look, “Why?”

Iwaizumi flicked a balled up straw wrapper at him, “There’s nothing wrong with this place!”

“Hate to make myself sound like an alcoholic, I swear I’m not, but I’ve never seen ya here before and I feel like I would have recognized you two if I had.” She played with a piece of hair near her face. Oikawa mouthed ‘oh’ and wiggled an eyebrow. To be fair, as pretty as he is she would have recognized him if she had seen him before.

“Funny, I think I’ve seen you around,” Iwaizumi returned his attention to his drink momentarily. Meanwhile, Oikawa was looking between the two across from him, straw between his lips.

Quietly sipping her own drink, she tried to think of some sort of reply to pick at that comment. He could have seen her here, but what if he’s referring to the parking lot outside the forest? Oikawa interrupted her thoughts before she could gather anything useful.

“So you live around here then?” She went wide eyed for a second and he immediately waved his hands in front of himself apologetically, “It sounds like you’re here enough if this is a favorite. I just figured-“

She cut him off with a chuckle. “You’re fine! And you could say I live in the area, yeah..,” she glanced at Iwaizumi, “Is it safe to guess you’re in Osaka too?”

He hesitated, “Yeah. Not too far from here.”

Good good.

“So Y/n, where are you from,” Oikawa pushed his now empty glass to the side, “Or have you always been in Osaka?”

“Ah, no. I moved here for college and stayed after graduating. I grew up in Hyogo actually,” she giggled, “Guess we all moved from home, huh? Though I didn't move as far as either of you.”

“Excuse me,” Y/n let Iwaizumi out of the booth then scoot back to take his spot. He grabbed his glass and Oikawa’s, “I’ll grab us new drinks.”

He looked at her asking if she needed anything to which she shook her head, then he took off with the empty glasses.

“So you both moved here for careers then,” Oikawa nodded towards Iwaizumi who was already halfway to the counter.

“That so?” She blinked at the fuzziness in her head. Miss bartender did indeed make her drinks stronger today. Should probably call it quits after this one if she hoped to sober up by the end of the night.

“After college he moved here to be closer to- Well, he was in Tokyo then here. But anyway, he’s an athletic trainer for the pro volleyball teams here,” Oikawa leaned in as he spoke. “Though it's too bad he won’t come to Argentina to work with my team! I do miss him.”

She gave a sincere smile, “Do you get to see him very often? That’s so far away..”

Oikawa’s grin dropped and spoke somberly, “I usually fly back home a couple times a year, and every time I come to see him.. We do talk on the phone a lot though.”

“Here,” Iwaizumi set a new cocktail in front of Oikawa, but that was the only drink he had in hand, “You weren’t talking shit about me while I was gone, were you?”

“You didn’t get yourself anything!” Oikawa complained, then went right to sipping on his straw as his friend slipped into the booth next to her.

“I’m fine for now. Maybe later.”

“Fine, Iwa-chan,” he settled back down, “Oh! It sounds like Y/n has been in Osaka longer than you. Maybe she can tell you all the fun stuff around, so you can do something other than hang with the guys and go to bars.”

Iwaizumi looked less than pleased by that statement.

She snorted, “Well, it sounds to me like we have similar hobbies. I probably don’t know anything you don’t know.”

“Really,” Iwaizumi eyed her expectantly.

“Well.. If you get tired of the lack of grass around.. Most of the area is concrete, but there’s a few tiny parks in the suburbs, and I think one downtown, or near there at least. ”

He looked at her emotionless, “Yeah? I don’t remember coming across any of those. But I have found the large forest east of here. It’s not terribly far.”

Right..

By now she was finishing off her own drink. Oikawa was going on about something that she’s pretty sure is volleyball related. Watching the men bicker, she not-so-carefully sat the glass in front of her before placing her hands on her thighs.

Iwaizumi broke his attention from Oikawa at the sound of glass clicking against wood and looked at her glass then her. “Sure you don’t want anything?”

“I’m hoping to not leave my car here tonight.” She grabbed her phone to check that Mizuki hadn’t messaged her. With the lack of notifications she figured that meant she was happy now.

>> To ‘Blondie’: “you are with Mizuki right?”

“Oh! You drive?” The bottom of Oikawa's glass hit the table hard out of excitement. Hopefully he didn’t drive here too. “What do you drive?” He’s excitable and full of questions, that’s for sure. Isn't she supposed to be the one asking all these questions?

“I do.. I have a Civic.” Playing with the straw and leftover ice in her empty cup.

>> From ‘Blondie’: “ur just now checkin???”

>> From 'Blondie': “I’m the better friend of course i showed up”

Ouch.

>> To ‘Blondie’: “i figured i just checkin”

Slumping back in the booth she was once again watching the boys talk. Oikawa is really animated.

“Are you texting your partner?” Oikawa winked, “Oh! Let me give you my number!” And he nearly knocked over his drink trying to slide his phone to her. Iwaizumi let out a string of curses as he kept the glass from falling and moved it out of the way.

Laughing, she took his phone and entered her number, going ahead and putting ‘Y/n-chan’ as the contact before sliding the phone back. “You didn’t drive here, did you?”

“Iwa-chan! Give her your phone!”

He sighed and grabbed his phone, opening the contact app before handing it to her. “He did not. We Ubered here.”

She put her number in his phone too, being sure to text herself with his phone so she would have his before handing it back.

Phone number down.

Oikawa tapped around on his phone and chugged the rest of his cocktail. A buzz from her phone followed.

>> From ‘unknown’: “seroius do u have a lover??”

She managed to half contain a laugh and save his number under ‘Oi-chan’.

“Welp! I’m going to get going. My Uber is here,” Oikawa pulled himself to his feet and smacked a hand on the table in front of Iwaizumi, “I’m going back to the hotel. Go on and keep the pretty lady company, Iwa-chan.” He kissed Iwaizumi’s head which earned him a slap followed by a friendly goodbye and promise of seeing him tomorrow. Then he gave Y/n a big smile before heading away.

Thanks, Oikawa.

Turning to Iwaizumi with a grin, “Yer friend is entertaining.”

“Yeah.. He’s a really good person and friend.”

She offered a soft smile.

“Not to rush or anything,” he started, “but is there a particular time you’re trying to get out of here by?”

“No no,” she straightened, “I had no real plans for tonight other than to chill here.”

And added, “Also didn’t plan on the bartender treating me with stronger drinks than usual either. So.. I gotta sober up before I can leave.. You were smart with the Uber.”

He chuckled, “Maybe remember that for next time.”

“Yeah yeah..”

The two chatted for a good hour, maybe longer. Iwaizumi told old stories from high school of his best friend, as well as what he was doing in Argentina now. He also spoke briefly about the volleyball teams he’s worked with as an athletic trainer. Apparently he moved to Ikuno to be closer to the team in Higashiosaka that he’s been working with the most.

Sitting there she caught the bright street lights outside the windows of the bar, though not too bright with the bar’s tinted windows. She remembered how nice it was out tonight. It would be a good night for stargazing, but with all of the lights in town it would be hard to see any stars. The best place for stargazing here is the forest..

But there is a public park north of the forest. Far from where she runs. It’s probably closed after dark, but all parks were and that never stopped her from sneaking into the forest. Though, the forest itself didn’t have open hours. Pretty sure.

Still looking out the window she started, “Hey.. The sky is really clear tonight.”

Iwaizumi glanced at her. She continued looking outside, “Obviously you can’t see stars anywhere near here.. But north of the forest pass Higashi’ there’s a park with a large clearing that would be perfect.”

He gave her an incredulous look, “You’re not saying you want to go on what, probably an hour drive to look at stars? Are you even good to drive yet?”

Humming she decided she was set on it. Plus maybe from there he’d let her drive him home. Then she'd be two for two - mini mission achieved. “..Can you drive a manual?”

OK i just finished darling in the franxx so im listing all my thoughts. i dont expect anyone to actually read this i just need to get my random thoights out there. if anyone is gonna read this, spoilers alert!!! ok<3

-zero two is simply best girl. i adore her.

-bro the piloting situation in the franxx is SO fucking weird i hate it so much holy shit.

-^that being said, this show did NOT get nearly as sexual (in that sense) as i thought it would

-this isnt a surprise to anyone, but everythinf after ep 15 and ESPECIALLY after ep 19 is just. not great (compared to everything the show was before this point)

-however, i did enjoy domestic soft hiro x zero two. all of that was *chef’s kiss*.

-by the end it was trying SO HARD to be woke and have plot twists and it just didnt make sense and honestly none of the “plot twists” carried much weight imo

-like them finding out they were fighting in klaxosaurs. i didnt rly give much of a fuck lmao.

-this show handles relationships and adolescence SO WELL

-honestly i love action romances but i think i wouldve really preferred if like all the episodes were slices of life lol. and thats coming from someone who can get bored EASILY by slice of life.

-ichigo is just. THE WORST JSHSHWKWHA! i understand WHY she did everything she did ok i get it but i still couldnt help but hate her for it! sorry!

-^especially since goro is best boy and i wanted her to stop breaking his heart!

-the episode where we see the backstory of hiro and zero two was by far my favorite episode. it was SO beautiful and emotional and the storytelling was top notch. amazing ep.

-alright here’s where things might get controversial idk...... i thought mitsuru and kokoro were handled really oddly as individual characters and ALSO as a couple!

-like? mitsuru had potential?? i thought his reasoning for hating hiro so much for all those years was a little weird but like whatever. it was his thing. but then they just COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT IT! and then all of a sudden he was like “oh! im not bitter ab hiro breaking his promise anymore! i love kokoro and want to be a dad and get married!:)” like. it just happened SO FAST. idk it was weird.

-and kokoro. ok. im realizing a lot of this is just my personal view of things, but i found it SO WEIRD that they made her character all ab baby fever. and hey, maybe thats just bc i have little to no desire to have kids of my own, but idk man. it just seemed so odd. they gave a young girl a book about babies and a baby doll and said “ok now shes mommy.”. like to me it seemed like she was just a little kid who wanted to play house and didnt have a clear understanding of what it really meant to be a parent! especially since shes so young! and they made her whole character ab that and i just hate the scene where she feels mitsuru up. they took her and mitsuru’s characters and relationships in a very odd direction imo ok.

-^despite all that, i wouldnt have minded their relationship or even if kokoro had gotten pregnant if they had just dont it differently. bc towards the end, seeing kokora pregnant and mitsuru trying to help her was really sweet! it was all really rushed and seemed so out of place and just in ur face about it.

-the world building had a lot of potential until they completely shat on it.

-from the first few episodes i REALLY thought i was gonna hate zorome but i actually liked him a lot by the end.

-miku grew on me a lot too.

-i will never forgive seeing zero two as that big fucking franxx, dog shdhwhwowhwh it was SO weird and out of place.

-i wanted more exploration with ikuno:/

-futoshi ended up just being kind of annoying cus he was just the stereotypical lovable fat character who loves food. that trope is so tired.

-despite the ending being overall bad, it was still REALLY nice and satisfying to see all the kids grown up and i really enjoyed seeing the bits of the show where they had to learn to take care of themselves and essentially recreate civilization.

-ok i just hate sad endings overall so seeing hiro and zero two “die” sucked but then seeing them being reincarnated was actually really sweet.

-alright. so like. am i the ONLY PERSON wondering why zero two has pink hair, red horns, and red skin if she’s supposedly a clone of a person that is ENTIRELY BLUE! also why is her skin only red when shes a little kid? did i miss something??

-overall, the show had an excellent exploration of relationships and adolescence, getting you to care about the characters in some way or another, but then falls flat with the last 10 or so episodes, specifically in the world building that they try to expand on and just the overall ending (at least on hiro and zero twos part. as i said before, i really liked seeing the rest of squad 13 and how they were living their lives).

Now that Darling in the Franxx is over, could you rank the characters from least to most favorite and why? as well as your opinions about the endgames.

I guess I’ll just stick to the characters from the main group. In which case:

10. Miku - She definitely had the least focus out of all of them and I therefore had the least reason to really care much about her. During the few times where she did get some attention, she didn’t really resonate with me. She just seemed like the typical tsundere with pigtails, and that’s unfortunate considering how a certain other girl with pigtails from an earlier anime by Studio Trigger…

Was by far the best thing about the show, bar none. Nico was absolutely amazing in Kiznaiver (and not just because of how adorable she was!!!), and Miku just kinda disappointed me in comparison.

9. Futoshi - I had nothing to really say about him prior to episode 11, and then during said episode he annoyed me with his possessive clingyness and his primitive ideals about how the worst thing a man could possibly do is to hurt a girl because that’s just completely untrue, and overly chivalrous sentiments such as this just annoy me, but I digress. He showed a lot of growth following this, but I just wish we got to see more of him and Ikuno interacting as partners, because they weren’t ever really depicted as “partners”, but more like two people who just happened to operate the same FranXX. That was rather disappointing, because I feel like two people who were as different as Ikuno and Futoshi could have made for a very interesting dynamic.

8. Hiro - I won’t call him bland, but I just didn’t find him interesting at all. He had a few good quotes here and there, with perhaps one of my favourite quotes in the whole show coming in episode 21 where Hiro said “I don’t live to fight anymore, I’m going to fight to live”. That was a very good line for him and was very applicable to all of them. But overall I just found Hiro to be rather “meh”.

7. Kokoro - I liked how as the show went on, she grew out of her shell and stopped hiding behind a smiling face that just went along with whatever her peers desired. She began to be more assertive, both in regards to voicing her opinions and in her romantic advances towards Mitsuru (a lot of which was actually influenced by him from their talks in the greenhouse), and this was nice to see. She obviously didn’t go about voicing her desire to partner with Mitsuru in the best way because she broke her promise with Futoshi in the process, but she acknowledged this and didn’t make excuses for her actions, which was commendable. She followed her heart and actively went after what she wanted, which in itself is admirable considering how they were brought up.

6. Ichigo - She was a character that intrigued me because I was always interested to see how she’d react to certain situations. I found her to be a good balance; she wasn’t the standard tsundere like Miku, she wasn’t the standard “waifu” like Kokoro, and she wasn’t quiet and reserved like Ikuno. I found this balance to be very appealing, and I think this balance of her character was what made her a good leader. She obviously made a few mistakes during episode 14, but what transpired during said episode was every bit Hiro and Zero Two’s fault as it was her’s, and her actions were very understandable under the circumstances, so I never held any sort of grudge. Besides, she then demonstrated a lot of character in the ensuing episodes, so it’s all good.

5. Zero Two - She was the character that added the “spice” to the series, which is always a plus in my book. She was unpredictable and captivating, which always made for high quality viewing and entertainment, and she ticked the box which I always find the most important when determining how much I like a character - their ability to retain my interest and attention. There were instances in which she irritated me though, such as in episode 14 where rather than simply clarifying to Ichigo that her outlook on Hiro had changed after discovering that he was the darling from her past, she instead decided to continue acting like she didn’t care and that Hiro was still expendable to her, which was what caused Ichigo to act obnoxiously stubborn in the first place:

That was utterly stupid on her part… But I digress. Zero Two was undoubtedly the heart and soul of the show. She made the show what it was.

4. Zorome - Towards the beginning of the show, I never would have imagined that he and Mitsuru would end up becoming two of my favourite characters, because they were both such pricks, lol. But I guess character development is a great thing eh? Like Miku, he didn’t really get too much focus, but unlike Miku, the focus that he did get resonated with me very much. Once you get past the brash exterior, you can see how much of a caring person he can be, with a good example being when he shed tears for Futoshi because he was so worried about his friend’s health in episode 16. I really wish that his fascination with being an adult could have been explored further, because episode 10 was very interesting. His conversation with the unnamed elderly woman caught my attention greatly, not least because Zorome found her to be inexplicably familiar. Alas, this was never really touched upon again, which is a shame. That plot point had a lot of potential.

3. Ikuno - With her, I always felt that there was so much more to her beneath that stoic facade, but as the episodes went by I felt that it grew increasingly less likely that she’d reach the potential that she had as a character. Thankfully, the 2nd half of the show showcased Ikuno in a really powerful fashion. Her confession to Ichigo was so well done because the manner in which she explained herself was just so understandable, saying things like how frustrated she felt that the boys were able to ride with her just because of their gender, which is something she could obviously do nothing about. I just found myself nodding the entire way through, and following this, she undoubtedly became one of the MVPs of the group. I don’t think the importance of the research that she conducted following Hiro and Zero Two’s separation from the group can be stressed enough. Hopefully she spent the remainder of her days happy with Naomi by her side, it’d be no less than she deserves.

2. Goro - If there was ever a character who remained consistently great throughout the entire duration of a show, Goro would be up there. He and Ikuno were the only two characters who never annoyed me once throughout the whole show, not even a little bit. But what puts Goro above Ikuno for me was that he was a great character from start to finish, whereas Ikuno took a while to get there. There wasn’t much development to speak of with him, but when you start off great, then this isn’t exactly a requirement. He was the constant voice of reason for the group; he was that safety net which assured you that no matter how mental the group may act, Goro would always be there to bring them back down to earth, and I really appreciated that.

1. Mitsuru - This guy was development personified, seriously. His transformation from the difficult and pompous person he was at the beginning, to the kind and compassionate person he became later on was astounding :

It was essentially like watching two completely different characters. A lot of his development can be owed to Kokoro, because much like how he helped her break out of her shell by influencing her to speak her mind and become more assertive, she helped him recover from his self loathing as a pilot, and through her unwavering belief in him, he was able to regain the belief in himself. And in doing so, his conceited attitude began to wane, and in it’s place emerged a bundle of fluff who would become “Papa No.1″.

As for the endgames, the pairings were to be expected. I couldn’t be certain of whether a relationship would be canonised between the Goro-Ichigo-Ikuno triangle, but I have no issues with the conclusion.

The reincarnation thing with Hiro and Zero Two understandably caused a lot of controversy but I had no real problems with it to be honest. Maybe because I had already resigned myself to accepting the likelihood that the two of them wouldn’t be getting the standard “happy” ending, long before episode 24. This made it a lot easier for me to accept the ending for what it was, and appreciate the journey that all of them had gone through during the course of the show:

Still though, even without Hiro and Zero Two’s story concluding in a standard happy ending, they were at least able to have a second chance to spend their lives together in peace and happiness, without the hindrances that came with being nurtured in a dystopian state where you’re bred to pilot and nothing more.

... And Mitsuru too. But really her in particular. Cause remember this scene.

SHE’S PREGNANT!!

I was reading some posts that estimate her to be somewhere between 6 and 8 weeks along at this point. Now a decent number of people think that the looks the girls share in this scene is them acknowledging this as well as showing concern. I disagree.

The scene with Nines busting in to confront Kokoro about the book and her putting the moves on Mitsuru showed that the other parasites only vaguely know what pregnancy even is. I really don’t think that they’d have any clue to the symptoms.

Zero Two looking her way while talking about the future though? That could be a sign she knows. Zero Two has been shown many times to be more... wild and worldly than the others. She Implied knowing about sex when everyone else barely knew what kissing was.

Zero Two also has extremely advanced senses. She was able to tell Ikuno’s exact temperature through touch that one time among other things. So yeah she probably knows. However her knowledge of human kind is spotty at best. Being able to tell Kokoro’s pregnant through sent or something? Sure. Knowing anything about the care of a baby at any stage of growth? Probably not. Actual birth giving? “You just squeeze it out, right? Then lick it clean?” ..... That could go badly.

This is why if Squad 13 live through this, baby intact? (Which omg please let that happen, I’ve never rooted for a teen pregnancy so much!!) As cute as them falling in love all over again would be, Kokoro needs NEEDS HER MEMORY BACK!! SHE’S THE ONLY ONE WHO READ THE BOOK!!!

Right now she doesn’t doesn’t even realize she’s pregnant because she doesn’t have any memory of knowing anything about the whole process.

Ideal situation? Kokoro and Misturu get their memory back, the entirety of the little family makes it through to the end, and there is an absolutely heart warming moment where she puts the pieces together and then turns to Mitsuru to tell him that he’s going to be a father.

This needs to happen, I think I’m gonna cry if it doesn’t.

a/n: I just know iwa is a softy that wouldn’t be able to stand seeing a girl cry. Also, there’s about a three week time skip between part 7 and part 8.

Part 8: Friend or Foe

Once again, Y/n had woken up on the sofa in Iwaizumi’s apartment, much to his dismay. He had offered again to swap places with her, but just as before she refused. Stirring as the sun began to shine through the living room window, she sat up and stretched with a soft yawn. Moving to her feet, blankets fell from her to the sofa revealing the oversized shirt hanging off one shoulder along with a pair of her own comfy shorts.

Like she had spent her first morning here, she watched the sun rise through the large window with the curtain pulled out of the way. She woke up much earlier than she had expected, earlier than her new friend, but at least she could see the beautiful colors of early morning.

After waking up more with the rays of heat shining on her face, she reached for her phone that was resting on the armchair she was standing next to. She caught the sound of steps coming from the hallway, eyes flickering to the sound as Iwaizumi entered the room. “Mm. G’morning, Iwaizumi.”

“Morning, Y/n,” he said, voice gruff from lack of use, walking through the living room.

Probably lingering on his frame a little longer than she should have, her eyes slid down his toned back and over the fit of his dark sweats as he made his way to the kitchen. Turning to face the window once more, she checked her messages.

>> From ‘Emergency Contact (‘Kusa)’: “You’re fox friend is going for a run during the day again.”

>> To ‘Emergency Contact (‘Kusa)’: “i take it as a fox”

>> To ‘Emergency Contact (‘Kusa)’: “is he at a park or something at least?”

>> From ‘Emergency Contact (‘Kusa)’: “Yeah”

>> From ‘Emergency Contact (‘Kusa)’: “I didn't think you’d actually be up this early.”

In her peripheral, she saw Iwaizumi had returned, taking a seat in the armchair. She looked away from her phone long enough to give him a friendly smile as he sipped at his glass of water.

>> To ‘Emergency Contact (‘Kusa)’: “glad to surprise you sometimes :)”

>> To ‘Emergency Contact (‘Kusa)’: “if he’s in the woods it's fine. wild foxes are around here unlike wolves. it's not that weird”

>> To ‘Emergency Contact (‘Kusa)’: “is it really that bothering you or did you just lose your human running buddy for this morning?”

>> From ‘Emergency Contact (‘Kusa)’: “Maybe”

>> From ‘Emergency Contact (‘Kusa)’: “If you’re up want to join me?”

“So what are your plans for today?” Iwaizumi pulls her from the text conversation.

“Well, I have work later, but I have tomorrow off so that’s nice. No plans yet though.” She watched as a couple of birds flew by the window.

“Aren’t office jobs usually nine to five?”

“Yeah.. I usually start late on days I work from home, then work until later in the evening. As long as early calls or online meetings don't prevent me from doing that anyway. I’m not much of a mornin’ person.”

He shot her a look of disbelief. He always woke up early, and yet here she was awake before he was, just like before.

She tilts her head in response. “So I guess nine to five.. or noon to eight-ish.”

He shook his head with a small grin.

Turning to walk around the coffee table and back to the sofa, she texted Sakusa back.

>> To ‘Emergency Contact (‘Kusa)’: “no thanks lol”

Not looking where she was going, she ran into the coffee table. Between the sound it made and knocking books and some papers off it, she jumped and let out a small yelp. Quickly, she muttered an apology and kneeled down to gather what fell. She could hear Iwaizumi take a few steps, likely to help her, but she had already grabbed the few items from the floor and sat them haphazardly on the short table and stood back up.

She heard something crash onto the floor, making her jump again and she turned toward the sound. She caught sight of a broken glass, Iwaizumi had dropped his empty water. Looking up to him, she was met with a shocked expression. Confused, she took a step forward to see what was going on, only to feel the fur of her tail brush against her leg.

Wait.

Shit.

Now she was the one looking like a deer caught in headlights. She stuttered trying to find words to - what - how could she save this situation? Best option seemed to be making sure he doesn’t run for the door or phone while her words fail her.

On rare occasions a sudden scare would bring forth a part of her wolf form, like maybe wolf ears that could pin down to hide in hair, or if she’s lucky under a hat or hood of her favorite pullover.

On even rarer occasions, a tail. Long and full of fur, reaching mid-calf.

Partial shifts weren’t unheard of amongst shifters, but it was generally done at will. How could she let her guard down and let this slip. This wasn’t ever in her plan.

What now?

But she heard him say under his breath, “It was you.”

Alarms went off in her head.

Oh no.

Oh no no no.

Game over.

Y/n kept eyes locked on him, olive eyes staring back into hers. Heart racing, she wills away her unwelcomed tail and he seems to not have noticed it disappear. Not that it matters at this point.

She spoke low and unsurely, playing with her fingers, “Y-you, uh.. wanna talk?”

His eyes swept over her slowly, hovering momentarily where the now-gone tail was. “Uhm.. I think I need a minute.”

Quickly and gracefully, she moved between him and the front door to his apartment, but he headed the opposite direction, towards the hall to the bedroom. The sound of a door clicking shut followed shortly behind.

You know what.. Maybe some space is okay right now.

Y/n groaned to herself. What is she going to do about this? Quickly she dressed herself right there in the living room. Tossing his shirt over the arm of the sofa and grabbing her clothes from the bag she had dropped in the corner the night before, quickly throwing them on. Her boots were quick to get on and off so she left those alone for now. Slipping on her zip up hoodie, she checked the pockets to confirm her keys and wallet were still in it. She’s not planning to leave yet, but she’s ready if that turns out to be best.

>> From ‘Emergency Contact (‘Kusa)’: “Ikuno?”

Softly, she pads down the hallway and waits by the bedroom door. Carefully listening, trying to confirm he’s in there and didn’t exit via window. Catching the sound of footsteps heading for the bedroom door, she quickly, though light and quiet, ran for the living room before he could open the door.

Standing in the living room, somewhat blocking the path to the front door, she looked about the room, too panicked to act natural. The bedroom door swings open and Iwaizumi makes his way to the living room. Choosing to avoid looking at him, Y/n stares out the large window she found herself to love watching the sunrise through.

Still listening to his steps, and now hearing the sofa, she knows he’s taken a seat. He’s running a hand over his face as she turns to face him. Heat flushed her cheeks and chest. Without making eye contact he spoke, voice laced with something akin to anger and disbelief, “I really thought I had to have hallucinated that night. That my eyes had tricked me or something..” He looks at her. “But no. So.. are you going to tell me I’m crazy, that I didn't just see that, or what?”

She spoke weakly, the word barely audible, “No.”

He stared at her for a moment then looked away and patted the spot next to him on the sofa. She quietly walked around the coffee table and the broken glass on the floor and sat down beside him. He only looked forward, not at her, a hand covering the lower half of his face as his elbow rested on his knee.

She exhaled softly. “No, you’re not crazy.” She folded her hands in her lap and looked down towards their feet. “You.. saw what you saw. Just now and back then.”

“Is that what you’re going to leave it at,” he paused for her to respond but she took too long. “Think maybe you should explain?”

She squeezed her hands together and brought her gaze to his hands, now hanging down as both elbows sat on his knees. “What do you want to know?” He shot her a look and she quickly added, “Exactly! I- Uh, don’t know where to start.”

He leaned back into the sofa, now glaring at her. “Maybe start with the wolf I saw in the woods that I swear somehow changed into you? And the.. tail?” He muttered something to himself before looking back at her with less distress on his face.

“Okay..” She looked him in the eyes. “I can’t explain how it works exactly, but yeah, I can switch between-,” she gestured to herself, “and the black wolf you saw that night.”

At this point he looked confused, which, fair. She continued, “Uh, and the tail was an accident. You scared me, er, maybe it was-“

He cut her off, “So you’re telling me this is just normal to you? Do- Can other people do this? Why can you-“ He sighed heavily. “No, I- Why did you talk to me in the first place? And I saw a wolf out there once before I saw you.. you know, switch back,” he waved a hand in her direction, “Were you following me for some reason?”

And now she sighed. “No. I wasn’t following you around. I’m not a stalker or anything. At the forest, both times we saw each other by accident. Obviously, I had gotten too careless..”

He stared her down, determined to figure things out. “But what about at the bar then? Did you only talk to me because I saw you.. as a wolf? Did you know I’d be there?”

She hesitated, which did less than pleased him. “No. I didn’t know you’d be there. We both just happened to be there.. and I took that chance to talk to you because I recognized you and.. I didn’t know if you actually saw me or not.” Her brows furrowed. “I was hopin’ you hadn't.”

They stared at each other for a moment. “So what now?” He moved to get more comfortable, breaking eye contact. Her heart raced even faster. “I know. You know that I know. What happens now?”

He turned back to her and was met with the sight of her holding one hand over her mouth and the other pressed to her chest, tears threatening to fall. His frown fell and his eyes widened at the sight.

She took a few deep breaths to calm herself and cleared her throat. “What will you do now?” She wiped her eyes with one hand while shifting in her seat, knee bumping his. “With this- With knowing.. That's why..”

She was scared. Just what she feared all along, that if he knew, what he would do. Would he get others involved and cause trouble for her and possibly other shifters in the area? She had other wolf and even fox shifters she cared about, though very few. She didn’t want them to pay for her carelessness, which is why she made a point to not mention these friends just in case. Would he try to hurt her? No, he didn’t seem the type now that she got to know him. Would she end up hurting him? She didn’t want to think of that as a possibility.

He placed a hand on her knee, making soothing circles with his thumb. “Why are you crying,” he spoke gently, “You’re fine.”

She looked up to him, one hand cradling the other against her chest. She spoke equally as soft, “I won’t hurt you.. You think I will, don’t you?”

He straightened at that.

“You won’t tell anyone?”

He shifted to face her more, removing the hand from her leg. “No.” He followed her gaze to find she was looking mindlessly towards the front door, then looked back to her. “I’m guessing people knowing is bad, right? I mean, they would freak out. Obviously. I’m sure with some people that.. could be a problem for you.”

She sniffled. “I do feel bad about not being upfront about it, but ya have to understand why. Right?” Tears welled up again but she fought them back. “I’m sorry to cause you trouble. I’ll leave ya alone. Okay? You don’t-“

He cut her off again, “I didn’t say anything about that.” He stood. “I’ll get you something to drink. Just stop crying.” And he left for the kitchen.

She wiped her eyes once more and took a few deep breaths before heading to the kitchen herself. He immediately turned to her as she walked up by the counter. He reached a glass of water out to her and she took it, idly sipping at it. Turning back to the counter, he rested both palms against it, eyes shifting deep in thought.

She drank half of her water before sitting it down and shoving her hands in the pockets of her hoodie, eyeing his arm closest to her. “So.. you’re not afraid of me?”

He scoffed. “No.”

She caught him rolling his eyes before he turned to put away some dishes that were left out, seemingly busying himself. Okay, so he was much bigger than her. And stronger. But the whole wolf thing had to be off putting. She murmured, “Okay then.”

“Yer the only one that knows..” She swiftly hopped up to sit on the countertop, legs dangling in front.

He lightly smacked the side of her thigh with the back of his hand before walking by to leave the kitchen. “No dogs on the counter.”

She gasped loudly, offended and shocked by the sudden comment. “What the hell! I’m not a dog!”

She slipped to her feet and took off to find him standing by the large window looking outside. She smacked his arm harder than the pat he had given her. He only eyed her as she plopped down on the armchair; he may have stifled a smile, but it was still visible in his eyes.

“So..” He glanced down at her, then went to get a broom for the broken glass that had been forgotten. “The tail thing was weird. That’s not going to be a regular thing is it?”

She rolled her eyes. “No. That was an accident. Doesn’t normally happen.”

He returned and tended to the pieces of glass on the floor. “Uh huh. And what about when that happens in public?”

She blushed in embarrassment. “That’s never happened! I just- Sometimes when I’m home alone I’ll,” she held her hands above her head to mimic wolf ears, “Y’know. It’s just like a relaxed thing, I guess. I don’t know. I don't think about it.” She smacked her head into her hands fully embarrassed now.

Amused by her reaction, he teased, “So you’re just that comfortable here, huh?” Mischief twinkled in his eyes as he went to dispose of the glass before returning to the sofa again. She stayed silent with her head still in her hands. He cocked an eyebrow at the lack of reaction, “Huh.”

She huffed in her hands, muffled, “Don’t ‘huh’ me.” She leaned back in the chair and peered over her shoulder and out the window.

He paused before deciding he may as well ask now, “Why were you a wolf, uh.. out there?”

She snorts at his words. “The forest over there, people don’t go there typically at night. It's nice for running with minimal worry of someone seeing me.”

“Except the times I saw you,” he said dryly.

Her lips pursed. “That was my bad. I got too close to the edge of the tree line.”

He looked at her, now more curious than anything. “Okay, but why run there? As a wolf, I guess.”

She looked back at him. “We all need exercise. Same goes for- me. Using that form keeps it feeling natural. Plus, I enjoy it.”

He nodded in response. “So do you like,” feigning seriousness, “Eat animals, and people, out there?”

She groaned. “Wolves, the animals and shifters, don’t eat humans. And I prefer my meals cooked.” She smirked at him, but then a thump from the neighbors temporarily caught her attention.

“Shifters? Plural?” His brows furrowed.

Shit.

“I mean, do you think I’m the only one who can do that?” She added a playfulness to her tone hoping to throw him off. It’s probably best not to dump everything on him today anyway.

He squinted at her. “I guess.”

“I left my water in the kitchen.” She rushed off and he sighed.

Random thoughts about bad/dumb/good things that happen in the back nine episodes of ‘Darling in the Franxx’

This post is long, and it’s mostly me griping about how Darling in the Franxx failed to stick its landing. I’ve got a lot of bullet points about what annoyed me, as well as some points about what I still liked in the back half, and eventually I’m just like “yeah, fuck this.”

That’s the short version: You had a lot going for you but ultimately blew it really bad for me, so like... fuck this.

Damn right Mitsu-WAIT, I forgot when Mitsuru had this much emotion! WHO DIS?!

The long version is more complicated, though, and I feel like rambling/ranting on, so here it goes.

There is no way to stress enough that Zero-Two literally transforms into a giant part-human part-mech creature that Hiro literally rides inside of. She becomes a skyscraper-sized girl that you can climb inside the skull of, and EVERYBODY IS OKAY WITH THIS AND DELIGHTED BY IT. There is NOT a moment where Zorome cries “WHAT THE ACTUAL FUUUUUUUUCK?!?” when she appears, flying in space, at a mass so large she could easily swallow the whole team in one gulp. Nothing like that.

This is not adequately set up, but it IS understandable with some thought: I mean, we are told in a previous ep that the franxx are essentially just recreated, retrofitted klaxosaurs. We also have seen how klaxosaurs are part-organic, part-mechanical beings, and we are told by the Klaxo Princess they are, in fact, the new version of the organic klaxosapiens, now retrofitted for war. In addition, we know that Zero-Two is part Klaxosaur - a clone of the last klaxosapien. So you see how the idea that Zero-Two could somehow “retrofit” or “transition” into a giant cybernetic war mode similar to how the klaxosapiens somehow did the same thing... you could justify that! Once I thought it all through, it kinda worked. But none of this is laid out for you, and it comes off as laugh-out-loud ridiculous in the moment that it happens. Only later, when my brain was piecing the evidence together, did I get somewhere that made sense out of it.

The Nines remained bitterly loyal to Papa when we last see them in Episode 20, snapping at Squad 13 for not showing due respect. When they return in Episode 23, Nine Alpha is suddenly on the side of Squad 13. Because Papa turned out to be an alien, you see. But like... you’ve been fighting klaxosaurs and feeling extreme loyalty to Papa your entire lives up until like, yesterday, so seeing you suddenly join the pro-klaxo side of the war is perhaps too hard a turn. Granted, a lot of time passes off-screen during this period, but still it’s sort of “Hey it’s me, Alpha. Remember how I was never anything but a total asshole to you guys? Remember how I hated emotions and shit? Yeah I wanna help Hiro reunite with Zero Two now.” Um. Okay?

Mitsuru’s speech to Kokoro about how “I want to be with you not because I love you, but because I believe that I did love you once, and I don’t remember that feeling anymore, but I still believe it existed, and I want to respect it!” is literally the worst, least-romantic declaration of non-love I’ve ever heard in my life. The music swells romantically and Kokoro seemingly weeps out of joy over it. I prefer to think she’s crying because it’s so fucking awful. It is actively offensive to real emotions and logic

Remember when Mitsuru talked about he always wished he and Hiro could co-pilot a franxx together? Remember his debilitating rage at Hiro for forgetting their promise to become soldiers together? It really feels like we had a gay or bi character here, and that maybe we were setting something up for his character. but the entire fixation on Hiro is utterly ignored once he gets reduced to “Kokoro’s sperm donor.” I mean, jeez, “my homosexual fixation on Hiro has filled me with an incoherent rage” just gave me flashbacks to Juzo from Danganronpa 3, and that’s not good, but at least it was more personality than he ultimately got.

WHY are we left with the strong sense that Ikuno is dying of the accelerated aging (she is the only one who loses ALL color in her hair and the only one we last see in a hospital bed on an IV drip, so it’s pretty blatant) even though literally no one else in the squad is suffering from it anymore, supposedly thanks to HER research?!... I assume because she’s gay. After all, the extremely gay Nines were all killed off by a mysterious ailment due to a lack of “maintenance” so we might as well kill off Ikuno too, right?! BURY YOUR GAYS. And FUCK YOU.

Goro somehow gets together with Ichigo. We do not get to see how/whether he won he over. Given that the final episode includes multiple scenes of her really missing Hiro along with a scene of her not caring much that Goro is going to travel the world without her (repeatedly), it comes off as though Itchy settled for Goro because he was the best available penis. I AM NOT ENDEARED.

We are also told that Goro has “really changed’ since the beginning of the series. There is no evidence to back this statement up. In fact, he is acting exactly the same in this scene as he always has. Granted, he had a moment in the previous episode where he got pissed and punched Hiro, and that was a big change... but he apologized and it’s not discussed again, so um. Huh. The thing that seems to be a sign of his “change” is his desire to go out alone into the world in an act of self-sacrifice for the good of everyone. Which is LITERALLY THE GORO WE’VE ALWAYS KNOWN. File his change under “informed attributes.”

By the end of the series, Hiro is full-on turning more into a Klaxosapien than a human because... honestly, I’m not sure. It’s possible it’s because he’s been “plugged into” Zero-Two, but it seems like the process is mostly done by then, because he’s immediately able to live without food or water or sleep once he plugs in, and he already had his horns glow with rage in the ep previous to this. So I think he transformed due to the fact that one time, as a kid, he licked Zero-Two’s blood, and as a teen, he’s kissed her a bunch of times. Which is... pretty goddamn extreme. I mean, I know fluid transfer can be a powerful experience — just ask Sandra Bullock — but this is some real next-level shit.

We waited all series for shit to “get real” and someone in Squad 13 to die. It takes until the very last episode for it to happen, and — in a desperate bid to make us care about what’s happening — it’s the two characters who got the most development and who most people care about. The two leads. Which comes off as too little, too late for me to even feel it, seeing as how they’re only vaguely human or relatable by this point. But I AM weirdly bitter that they kept alive everyone else, even the many people we didn’t give much of a shit about (Zorome? Miku?), so that none of the battles in the series EVER had to have real consequences for our heroes. I hate to sound bloodthirsty, and yet....

Hey, speaking of Zorome, remember how him being exposed to the “adult” in the first half of the show made her get sick? Remember how she was also immediately fascinated by and kind to him and it made you wonder how that would affect the other adults? None of this goes anywhere, because the adults all get spirited away as souls to be part of the VIRM hive-mind, so whatever, they’re gone now.

Why are these people all standing around a statue and screaming at the sky and praying? Most of them don’t even know who this girl was. This doesn’t come off as “moving” so much as a terrifying parable about religious fanaticism in cult groups. You see a group of people screaming and praying at idols you don’t understand, and gradually, more and more people just copy the behavior without understanding it. *shiver*

Was there EVER a hint that the adults watching over the squad were friggin’ IMMORTAL?! Because I don’t think there was. I’d need to go way back into earlier episodes to be sure, though.

It’s not that the ENTIRE back half of the show is awful, really. There are some legitimately excellent moments.

Good Stuff

Right when we first come back after episode 15′s big midway point in the story, the subtle way that Zero-Two discovering the gray hair on Miku’s head was handled - during a warm, lighthearted scene to boot - really made it hit home.

The overt anger and defiance of Hiro in the face of “Papa” and APE really made me like him even more. He had some great moments there, including possibly the greatest episode-ending dialogue when he declared just how fucking DONE they all are with their so-called “Papa.”

Zorome’s inability to fully embrace the idea that “Papa” could be so wrong and bad was another good touch.

The big “backstory” episode served to make me really care for Dr. Franxx in a surprise late-game twist. He goes from being a shadowy sinister presence to becoming one of the more sympathetic characters... right before getting killed shortly thereafter.

The big promise scene between Zero-Two and Hiro, where they swear to always come for each other... that one really pulled at my heart.

Also, Hiro’s dedication to caring for the ailing, zombie-like Zero-Two was both devastating and touching. It’s one of the final bits that actually hits any kind of emotion for me in the series.

I actually didn’t mind the alien twist with the VIRM very much like so damn many people did. APE was long portrayed as this unknowable higher power that was clearly hiding something while simultaneously enforcing a 1984-esque obedience and loyalty... and there’s only so many places to go with such a setup, honestly. Much more shocking, to me, is how little is done to build up to/justify the true origin of the klaxosaurs.

But, well, yeah. Like most, I wound up feeling like DitF had a couple of really excellent characters in the lead, and then proceeded to go nowhere worthwhile once it got them to finally be together. Ultimately, they didn’t even get to grow up or have real sex or face the new world. They just get shuffled off into weirdness and death so we can have a bigger cycle of disappointment.

This one has a lot of themes that feel unexplored, and maybe further analysis would make it all gel together more comprehensibly. There is definitely a lot of effort put into thematic hints and worldbuilding in the first half, some of it done in a subtle background way that recalls my favorite aspects of The Future Diary — a favorite anime of mine that ALSO admittedly fails to adequately explain some parts of the world it builds, but it keeps most of its logic intact and is so emotionally engaging that I ultimately went along for the ride and was willing to explore the background justifications and themes later in order to fully grasp that world.

In comparison, I don’t really want to put in the effort to glean the underlying details of DitF. It didn’t leave me feeling like the writers put in the work to keep me invested, so why would I?
