MASAKI YUKAWA EXHIBITION 2023 at Gallery Kobayashi
A video of the exhibition Masaki Yukawa held at the Gallery Kobayashi in Ginza, Tokyo, in August 2023, is now available on Youtube. In this video, he talks about how he came to incorporate elements such as dots and lines into his recent work, which he has been working on for 30 years, the process of creating each piece, and his memories of Jan Dibbets, who trained him at the Art Academy in Germany.

I made music for the video of Yuichi Higashionna and Harumi Yamanaka's exhibition "Play Double". This exhibition was held on the 2nd floor of "safi", a summer-only fruit parfait shop in Heiwajima. The venue was a renovated vacant house, and I felt that the house itself was a large work of art. The exhibition has already ended, but you can see art works made by Yuichi Higashionna here and there in the store on the first floor, and you can also enjoy a delicious seasonal parfait. "Safi" is open until August 29th this season. But it will open on September 3rd and 4th, and the event of the installation video by Harumi Yamanaka will be held. [exhibition infos] title: Harumi Yamanaka & Yuichi Higashionna "Play Double" venue: heimlichkeit Nikai date: 20 May - 19 June 2022 [movie credits] Music "Shutter" composed by Ayumi Yoshioka (@ayumii_yoshioka) Filmed & Directed by Yuichi Minamiguchi (https://yuichi-minamiguchi.com) Thanks to fruits parfait cafe "Safi" (@safi_fruits)

Taro Morimoto "neutral tones" 2020.10.2 (fri) -  10.24 (sat)

"Kita no Kuni Kara"
139.
Tumblr media
Title: “Kita no Kuni Kara” Genre: Human drama Season: Fall 1981 TV Station: Fuji TV Theme Song: “Kita no Kuni Kara” by Sada Masashi Starring: Kunie Tanaka, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Tomoko Nakajima, Ayumi Ishida, Keiko Takeshita, Koichi Iwaki, Mieko Harada Date Finished: June 23, 2021 My Personal Reason for Watching: My first ever subtitle job for Hawaii’s local Japanese channel, KIKU, was for this drama:)
Tumblr media
(^^ This drama makes me want to visit Hokkaido)
“Kita no Kuni Kara” is a story about Jun (Yoshioka) and Hotaru (Nakajima) Kuroita who move to the town of Furano from Tokyo with their father, Goro (Tanaka) after his divorce from their mother Reiko (Ishida). Reiko’s sister, Yukiko (Takeshita) moves in with them as well. The drama follows this family as they learn to survive in Hokkaido.
Tumblr media
(^^ You know you’re in Hokkaido when you see wild foxes around)
This drama was 24 episodes and aired from 1981 to 1982. It has become cemented into Japanese popular culture and was so popular that it aired specials throughout the years until 2002. It seems like everyone knows about it, so when I received this drama to subtitle, I was excited to get started. With its popular culture status in Japan, it’s needless to say that this is a great drama. While I did watch it for work, I became fully invested and couldn’t wait to see what happened next. I started to watch the specials (there are a total of 8 specials) and it’s so fun to see the kids grow up!
Tumblr media
(^^ Hotaru and Jun, you’re in your 40s/50s now! XD)
The cast of characters both main and supporting were all great. Jun got annoying sometimes as he always complained, but you couldn’t blame him (I mean, if I was that age and I had to live without TV or electricity, I would be complaining, too haha). Hotaru was so cute! She always supported her father and never complained like her brother. I liked that Goro had a support system in Furano like his cousin Seikichi and his family as well as his classmate Nakahata. The Yukiko and Sota romance plotline was nice to watch but I got so mad at Sota for practically abandoning Tsurara for Yukiko! Ugh men! XD While the plots and storylines were pretty consistent, some plotlines were kind of random. For example, the whole UFO subplot where the kids saw a UFO and the teacher got abducted by one and disappeared. The timing makes it look like UFOs/aliens were popular (Close Encounters, ET, etc. all came out around that time) but it was so random!
Tumblr media
(^^ A UFO in Hokkaido?! Didn’t know they were common there…o_0)
While it is quite long for a Japanese drama, I cannot recommend it enough. If you like Japanese dramas, this one has to be towards the top of your watch list as far as classic dramas.
Favorites: Favorite Character: Hotaru! Definitely the best character in this drama. Favorite Episode: All of them are good and have different storylines. I like the one with the Yukiko/Sota plotline (it was towards the beginning before she goes back to Tokyo for a while) as well as the controversy with Ryoko Sensei as well as the storylines revolving Shokichi’s grandfather. The blizzard episode was a good one, too! Favorite Scene: The drama is well-shot and I can’t pinpoint a specific scene that I liked the best.
Tumblr media
(^^ The lavender fields! The overall nature! Take me to Hokkaido!)
“Kita no Kuni Kara” Rating: Story: ✭✭✭✭½ Beautiful drama. Taking off half a star for those random storylines lol. Acting: ✭✭✭✭✭ This. Cast. That is all. Theme Song: ✭✭✭✭½ If there’s one thing that makes this drama special is this fantastic score. Do yourself a favor and check out the score from Masashi Sada. Total: 14/15
Next Up: “Kanojo wa Kirei Datta” maybe?
Tumblr media
(^^ RIP Kunie Tanaka :( )

The JICFuS (Joint Institute for Computational Fundamental Science) Movie introduces how physicists in the fields of particle, nuclear, space and planetary physics are using supercomputers to conduct simulation research. This time, as the culmination of the film, Dr Shoji Hashimoto, Director of the JICFuS, spoke about the relationship between physics and simulation. This time we were also allowed to enter the inside of Japan's largest accelerator and had the opportunity to film the inside of the accelerator and its observation equipment. Both the accelerator and the measurement equipment were of an extraordinary scale. It is also one of the best ways to watch footages of supercomputers around Japan, including the latest ‘Fugaku’. Please enjoy it.
