lockdown film no. 34 - The Half of It (2020) dir. Alice Wu

I enjoyed the stop motion bit at the beginning a Lot. It was a shame they didn’t do more with it throughout the film

- couldn’t take the first band scene seriously because when they were singing Annie’s song all I could think of was being in a football stadium in Sheffield singing the greasy chip butty song (sheff gang rise up)

- don’t know who needs to hear this but if you want a favour from someone do not pull them off a moving bike

- the scene where Ellie dropped all her stuff and aster helped was pretty basic but I did really like how Ellie stood up with the phone glued to her head

- it feels very much like a shakespearean comedy with false identities, which I’m super here for

- (just clocked its Cyrano de Bergerac. At least its better than the shit storm that was Sierra burgess)

- oh the bathroom scene. Dead. Love that. Focus pulling ? Yes please. But the girls ? Get in the bin

- the idea of revising for a date because in reality you have Nothing in common is an absolute nightmare but it’s what Paul would do because he’s like effort = love. I don’t think I agree with that. Obviously you should put effort into your relationships with people but you can’t bludgeon someone into loving you, nor can you bludgeon yourself into loving them. If a person Does Not Love You for whatever reason, it doesn’t matter how much effort you put in. And then that feeds into really toxic stuff of boys not knowing how to take it when someone doesn’t like them and how they’ll then think “I just didn’t try hard enough” and that just leads to stacks and stacks of bludgeoning which is obviously a terrible vibe

- it slightly upsets me how high they play ping pong. technique left the chat

- ellie really was not subtle when she was saying the reasons why someone might theoretically like aster. Come on pal. 

- the scene where Paul made taco sausages for Ellie and her dad was so sweet the way he was standing behind them waiting for their reactions… big golden retriever energy

- “You’re not just a girl”

- “I’m not? Then what are you?”

- CUE EXISTENTIAL CRISIS

- i was getting big carol and Therese in the tunnel vibes when they were driving to aster’s place. Having seventeen playing in the background felt, again, a bit basic

- AWW BABY ELLIE ZOOMING AROUND WHEN ASTER TOOK HER CLOTHES OFF TO GET IN THE WATER

- it was good how when aster got out of the water (presuming she was naked), we went straight in and sat very close with Ellie because aster not wearing clothes isn’t the point of any of this scene, it’s about Ellie and aster and that particular bit was about Ellie and realising the effect that aster has on her. I could waffle for ages about how wlws are conditioned to believe that loving women is predatory and how that has massively affects this scene but I feel like that’s kind of obvious 

- the vending machine bit where Paul kisses Ellie was so awful on so many levels — obviously rank that he kissed her because Ellie didn’t want him to and aster saw, but one thing that really made me sad was how, when Paul said “it’s a sin. You’re going to hell” it was also really upsetting to him because Ellie is his friend and because I guess he equates being gay as someone doing something wrong — it would be as if one of my closest friends did something that didn’t line up with my idea of them, like being racist and beating someone up. that would make me sad so him finding out that Ellie isn't straight made him sad in the same way

- trig’s proposal is literally my worst nightmare. It’s manipulative for starters and I hate the idea of a public proposal, but it’s so hypocritical for him to quote a really nice verse from the bible saying love does not boast and then kind of boasting about the love that he has for aster and using such awful language like “she’ll make me a great wife” doesn’t feel like he understood that verse very well

- i just have to say that asters character did not feel developed at all. We got to the end and I didn’t feel like I was connected to her at all, I know she wasn't really one of the main characters but for the amount of time we spent with her I would have hoped she’d be a bit more rounded as a person

- it was good that Ellie and aster had a kiss, but when I first saw I really didn’t like the way it was done because it made an iffy callback to an earlier scene where paul says that he kissed aster and Ellie was confused because he couldn’t have known that aster wanted him to kiss her. But then in this scene Ellie doesn’t take into consideration what aster wants at all, so it just feels a bit jarring in Ellies character for her to do something like that

- paul running by the train was soft. I liked it

- in conclusion this film is …. fine. I was excited to watch it initially because I’d heard it was a new queer film with a main character who wasn’t white, so I was hyped. I think it is a queer film in the sense that the main character is queer, but her queerness isn’t explored as such, which I think is a shame. It’s definitely good to have platonic relationships at the centre of a story, but I was hoping they’d have more aspects of a queer storyline in this film, so I guess I’m saying it didn’t play out the way I was expecting it to. Having said that, that’s not the films fault

helllloo, ann! funny you ask, because why yes, i do have some songs that make me cry / come close to tears because of the lyrics / melody! so a brief list of some songs that have been really hitting hard for some reason:

tbh this could be romantic or platonic or like? also in some interpretations, i can almost see this as a letter to oneself. but anyways, the refrain just makes me happy / gives me coming-of-age movie vibes, and just....god, the lyrics “you thought that you’d never be enough / thank god that he didn’t take you / it’s hard, but each breath’s a breakthrough” just makes me :’)) (and then “time heals if you let it / feel pain and then forget it / it’ll get easier”....no shut up i’ve been crying about this song for the last few weeks now.) 

my play by ajr: 

i’ve been listening to this song......a lot these days for.....a fic i’m writing, but anyways, it’s just one of those songs where you’re like “huh this is odd, how specific to sing about putting on a play for your parents when you’re a kid” to “oh god oh no i’m crying oh no”. it’s such a gut-wrencher, and i think ajr just went super raw with this song? you realize quickly that this song is mostly about divorce and also like. this desperate feeling of just. wanting your life to be the same and also not being too trusting of love because “if love dies, why do we fucking bother?”, and all of it just......stems from everything’s complicated and love is complicated and from a child’s point of view, you just. want your parents to be together. my own parents aren’t divorced, but i think this song can really, really speak to anyone who has ever felt desperate in trying to hold people together / being scared of love / etc. it’s just. god. such a gut-puncher.

this piece doesn’t have any lyrics--it’s just instrumental, but i feel both so full and so empty whenever i’m listening to it, if that makes sense? maybe because i’m just thinking of the movie and the scene that plays with this piece. it’s just a lovely piece in general. really gentle. will remind you of new beginnings and the autumn wind and leaving your hometown for a new chapter. 

sparkle by radwimp [from your name movie soundtrack]: so this song is mostly just piano, but also japanese lyrics. now, i don’t know japanese, but i watched this movie, and it’s beautiful, but also? also i just love this piece because i actually heard it before watching the movie. the movie’s rather romantic, but like. anyways. the melody alone will fill you with hope and just. :’))) it’s nine minutes long, but it’s a wonderful nine minutes. 

this is kind of a wild card, but the second star to the right by jonatha brooke [from peter pan: return to neverland movie soundtrack]: has been a song that i’ve been listening to a bit. lol so when i was little, i actually watched the second peter pan movie before the first one, so that’s probably why this movie is closer to my heart, and like. this song just. is very nostalgic, but i think more than that, i think it just. makes me come super close to tears because the whole premise of this movie is about a girl who’s trying to grow up really fast, but like. you know. she’s still a kid, and stories about fairies shouldn’t be something she feels like she needs to leave behind. lol i wonder why this song hits so hard! :D

remember your smile by haze moon: haha. ha. you want to cry? this song will make you cry because there’s literally someone crying in this song. tbh, this could kind of be seen as a romantic or platonic song, because it’s just. it’s just about missing someone a lot. also, the sound of rain plays over this song, so it’s like. one of those songs that you listen to while curled up in bed at 2 am because suddenly you really miss someone you hadn’t thought about in a while. 

sky in the sea by haze moon, isowys: bro. i’ve been thinking about this song a lot lately. it’s mostly just about like. getting better and healing after something that really hurt you and it’s just. bro. you know that scene in any book / movie / tv show where the protagonist slowly gets up from the floor / the ground, and they’ve been beaten over and over and over again and they might be exhausted and tired, but like. they still get up? and they look at their antagonist / villain and the music swells because look at the beauty in standing up and marching forward and refusing to kneel over again? bro. this is the song that i think you’d want playing in the background as a character marches forward just because there’s this rhythm to this song that both makes you feel here and not, and it’s so beautiful. 

anyways lol sorry for the long list, but....yes, as you can tell........there are many songs. that have been making me almost cry / actually cry because they’re so. good.

SYNOPSIS

Dos años después de que Misterios S.A. cerrara sus puertas, el gran danés Scooby-Doo y sus avispados amigos Fred, Daphne, Shaggy y Velma, son llamados individualmente a Spooky Island para investigar una serie de incidentes paranormales en el club de vacaciones. La première bande-annonce de Scoob !, un film d’animation à venir sur les débuts de Scooby-Doo et de ses amis, est sortie lundi et révèle que les friandises emblématiques ont inspiré le nom de Scooby alors qu’il n’était qu’un chiot errant perdu. SINOPSIS :

Desde que su mujer murió quemada en un accidente de coche, el Dr.Ledgard (Antonio Banderas), eminente cirujano plástico, se interesa por la creación de una nueva piel con la que hubiera podido salvarla. Doce años después consigue cultivarla en su laboratorio, aprovechando los avances de la terapia celular. Para ello no dudará en traspasar una puerta hasta ahora terminantemente vedada: la transgénesis con seres humanos. Pero ese no será el único crimen que cometerá...

En Toledo, en 2012, el doctor Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) vive en "El Cigarral", una mansión en las afueras de la ciudad donde tiene su laboratorio y quirófano personales. Allí mantiene cautiva a una joven que ese día ha intentado suicidarse abriendo sus muñecas, Ledgard logra salvarla pero se muestra molesto por la fragilidad de la piel. Posteriormente, usa plasma animal para crear piel sintética que injerta en la muchacha. Atándola en la camilla de su laboratorio experimenta apoyándole la llama de un soplete y posteriormente un mosquito que intenta picarla, curiosamente, ninguno de los dos logra lastimarla.

Tras esto se ve al doctor exponiendo en el instituto de biotecnología donde trabaja que ha creado con éxito piel sintética a la que llama "Gal", que no sufre quemaduras y es inmune a los piquetes de insectos declarando así que gracias a esto las personas no solo estarán a salvo de ser lastimadas o desfiguradas por accidentes, también podrán erradicar enfermedades como la malaria. Aunque Ledgard anuncia que solo se ha probado en ratones atímicos, tras su disertación el presidente de la compañía lo interroga y lo hace reconocer que ha diseñado la piel integrado atributos del ADN de los cerdos para mejorar las defensas de la piel, su superior se muestra molesto ya que esto viola las convenciones de experimentación y aunque en lo personal lo apoya le advierte será denunciado de continuar, Ledgard se excusa explicando que lo hizo como un experimento personal en memoria de Gal, su esposa fallecida en un accidente y con solo saber que ha logrado crearla se da por satisfecho por lo que asegura abandonará su investigación.

La joven cautiva, llamada Vera, es vigilada con la ayuda de Marilia, el ama de llaves. Dado que es la época del Carnaval, el Dr. Ledgard se ausenta y Zeca, el hijo de Marilia, llega a la mansión disfrazado de tigre tras haber cometido un robo e implorando a su madre que lo esconda. Una vez allí descubre a Vera, a quien confunde con Gal. Marilia se niega a darle cobijo y mucho menos dejarle ver a Vera, pero Zeca no se deja amedrentar: quiere acostarse con la joven así que reduce a su madre y viola a Vera, quien le pide que a cambio le ayude a escapar de su cautiverio.

Robert vuelve a su casa y al ver a Zeca abusando de Vera lo acribilla. Mientras Robert se deshace del cuerpo, Marilia le confiesa a Vera que es madre tanto de Zeca como de Robert, si bien son de distintos padres y ninguno de los dos hombres sabe de su relación sanguínea. La diferencia es que mientras Zeca era hijo de un criado que trabajó en la casa, Robert era fruto de sus relaciones con el patrón, por lo que fue adoptado por éste ya que su esposa era estéril, mientras Zeca se crio con ella pero huyó muy joven y se dedicó a sobrevivir en la calle traficando droga. Según la anciana, siente que todo lo que ha pasado es su culpa ya que ambos hombres en cierta medida estaban locos y siente que ella es quien se los ha heredado.

Vera se muestra confusa ya que Zeca le hablaba como si la conociera desde hace mucho, Marilia le explica que su rostro es idéntico al de Gal y para entienda todo lo que acaba de suceder, relata como es que hace doce años Zeca la visitó y reapareció en la vida de Robert, quien en ese entonces estaba casado con una mujer llamada Gal. Zeca se convirtió en el amante de ésta, decidiendo huir juntos; sin embargo, mientras se fugaban sufrieron un terrible accidente automovilístico en el cual Zeca queda ileso y escapa pero Gal sufrió horribles quemaduras en la totalidad de su cuerpo siendo rescatada y atendida por Robert hasta que logró restablecerse, pero dado que su cuerpo quedó gravemente desfigurado, este ordenó que la casa se mantuviera a oscuras y sin espejos. Un día Gal oyó a su hija Norma cantando en el patio y al asomarse a la ventana pudo ver su reflejo en los cristales; no pudiendo asumir su nuevo aspecto, saltó desde la ventana de su habitación y cayó frente a la niña. Norma, testigo del suicidio, tuvo que recibir tratamiento psiquiátrico debido al trauma. Tras esto Robert despidió a Marilia y el resto de la servidumbre viviendo solo a partir de ese momento.

La historia retrocede hasta el 2006 y muestra a Vicente, un joven que vive con su madre y le ayuda en su humilde tienda de vestidos de un pueblo gallego indeterminado que él aborrece y del que quiere emigrar. Vicente constantemente intenta coquetear con Cristina, su compañera de trabajo, aunque sin éxito debido a que a ella le atraen las mujeres.

Norma, ya adolescente y mostrando por fin cierta mejoría, sale temporalmente del centro psiquiátrico para acudir a una boda acompañando a su padre. Durante la ceremonia, celebrada en un pazo en el pueblo de Vicente, Norma coincide con el muchacho y se sienten atraídos; éste la seduce y van a los parterres del recinto donde se drogan e intentan tener relaciones sexuales. En medio del acto Norma oye a la banda de la boda interpretar la misma canción que cantaba durante el suicidio de su madre, esto reaviva su trauma y hace que le pida a Vicente que desista. Llevada por el pánico, le muerde la mano y el joven, asustado y bajo el efecto de drogas, le da un golpe en la cabeza, dejándola inconsciente y huyendo en su motocicleta.

Robert encuentra a su hija a los pocos minutos, habiéndose cruzado con un joven en moto al que ya no puede alcanzar. Al recuperar Norma la consciencia, el acto sexual, las drogas, su trauma, el golpe, Vicente y Robert se han mezclado y distorsionado de tal forma en su mente que no puede evitar ver a su padre como un agresor y sufre una crisis nerviosa mucho más aguda. Sin más remedio, es enviada de nuevo al psiquiátrico en peor estado que antes y como consecuencia, se suicida saltando por la ventana de su habitación igual que su madre.

Robert, tras perder a su mujer e hija en idénticas circunstancias, jura venganza. Tras identificar al muchacho lo secuestra, lanza la moto de Vicente al acantilado de Finisterre para simular un suicidio o accidente y que las fuerzas de orden desistan de buscarlo. Lo confina en un cobertizo bajo pésimas condiciones, hasta el día del entierro de Norma, cuando decide practicarle una operación. Robert engaña a su colega Fulgencio y su equipo médico para que le ayude a operar a Vicente, diciéndole que era una operación consentida por un paciente que desea anonimato. Al despertar del procedimiento Robert revela que lo ha sometido a un cambio de sexo; posteriormente, y a través de numerosas operaciones, Robert remueve la piel del joven y la reemplaza con su versión sintética, dándole al cuerpo del muchacho aspecto femenino.

It's hard to know who the sexless gay romantic comedy Single All the Way was made for: people who think Will and Grace is too raunchy? It certainly wasn't made for a gay audience. It even seems to have inspired a backlash with such gay romcoms as Fire Island (Andrew Ahn, 2022) and Bros (Nicholas Stoller, 2022), in which gay men are having sex with one another and enjoying it. Single All the Way is mostly set in an idyllic New Hampshire town, to which Peter (Michael Urie) returns for Christmas accompanied by his roommate, Nick (Philemon Chambers), with whom he is not having sex. They are greeted by his large, boisterous family who seem to want Peter to have sex, especially with Nick. Except, that is, Peter's mother (Kathy Najimy), who wants him to have sex with the only gay man in town, her hunky spinning instructor, James (Luke Macfarlane). At this point, you're probably asking yourself what gay man wouldn't want to have sex with Luke Macfarlane, but Peter is reluctant to be pushed into any such thing. Of course, the word “sex” is never mentioned. The idea is for Peter to find himself in what these straight people consider ideal: what they would call a “committed relationship.” Chad Hodge's screenplay leaves no romcom cliché unused as the movie proceeds toward its obvious conclusion: Peter and Nick declaring their love for each other. (Maybe they even have sex, but the film is too squeamish to suggest that.) Gay icon Jennifer Coolidge is there for what fun the movie provides, as Peter's addle-brained aunt who is directing the town's Christmas pageant. The absence of chemistry between Urie and Chambers is only one of the film's problems, and given the apparent squeamishness about gay sex, perhaps its least.
