It's a glowing birthday fic for @animemoonprincess! Happy birthday!!

It had been a rough day and all MK wanted to do was create a mountain of pillows, dive right in and bask in its comfort. Unfortunately, his day had only gotten worse when he had to fight off a demon who had it out for him. Luckily, he had been able to take out the demon with a fairly small amount of damage to the city and himself. As he climbed the stairs to his apartment, he thought about his day and realized that he hadn't seen Mei, Red, Rumble or Savage all day. They would usually come hang around as he worked, but he didn't see them once. It kinda hurt but was mostly worrying.

He pulled out his phone and texted Mei, pausing before opening the door to his apartment. He removes his shoes, and was heading further in when the light suddenly flipped on. His missing friends all jumped up from their hiding places to yell 'SURPRISE!!!!'. The scream that left the boy caused him to light up like a flash granade, blinding everyone.

Mk took a moment to register the room and his friends while they blinked to try to get their sight back. "Um... Hey.. Why are you in my apartment? And where have you been all day?" He asks them, making Mei look over. "We wanted to surprise you with a fort of pillows and have been setting it up all day." She explains with a grin, wrapping her arm around his shoulders.

Mk looks around dumbfounded. It must have been quite the expression as it caused the others to snicker in some fashion, even causing Rumble and Savage to glow lightly. They quickly stopped when MK began to tear up. "Hey, Noodle boy. Why are you crying?" Red asks, trying to hide his concern. "S-Sorry. This.. I just wasn't expecting it and I really needed it today. T-Thank you." He says as he tries to wipe the golden tears away.

Mei pulls the kid into a hug, Savage and Rumble soon joining. Red even pat MK's head some. When the pull away, MK looks at the massive mountain of pillows, a primal urge stirring in him. He hesitates before finally giving in after removing his jacket. He runs over and dives into the pillow pile, completely disappearing in the mass of softness. This makes the twins laugh, glowing more and soon follow Mk by diving into the pillows as well. Mei grabbed ahold of Red and dragged him in. MK smiled, appreciating the surprise more than he could express.

Sometimes you just have one of those moments where the progress we've made as a culture get thrown into stark relief. You look at something and go "Holy shit, that would never have happened when I was a kid."

Today, I had one of those moments when I realized that the teenage boys I'm working with are just. genuinely, openly enthusiastic about going to Build-a-Bear for their outing.

These are sixteen and seventeen year old boys! They just had a whole conversation about what to name their "cute", mostly new squishmallows! They're genuinely excited that they're going to Build-a-Bear this weekend and asking other kids to pick up specific accessories for them!!

Holy shit, that never would've happened when I was 16. None of the boys would have dared to be visibly interested - and neither would most of the girls! There would have been a million gay jokes and "Haha, you're a girl" jokes and "What are you, a baby?" jokes. Teenagers weren't even supposed to care about anything back then!

Less than 15 years later, and I'm watching three 17 year old boys treat all that as not even worthy of comment.

So let's call that a reason for hope. Even when the kids aren't alright, in some ways apparently they are alright. Go Gen Z, honestly. It's so lovely to watch you guys just openly doing and saying stuff that, when I was a teen, would've been a social death sentence.

#obligatory disclaimer that this really really obviously is not universal #I do live in a major progressive city #there's definitely a level of a liberal bubble effect here #but it's still really powerful to see it #because even in a major liberal enclave there were so many limits on the gender roles and homophobia etc. etc. fronts #and also the limits of the oppressive weight of obligatory teen apathy lol #seriously go gen z. so glad you guys decided cringe is dead. A happy colorful monster

Have you heard of My Pet Monster? It's a cartoon from 1986, which had one season (also apparently there's a live movie). You can stream it if you like. But for the purposes of this story, the most important fact is that the star was a very colorful smily, monster. And in January of last year, one of the cuddly plush versions was discovered in the back of a closet (so I guess he was a moonlighting as a closet monster?).

In any case, his original person found him, and wanted to gift him to his own daughters, but this monster had clearly had a rough time in the closet. Here is one of his diagnosis photos:

You can see the wound on his chest, and that his teeth are coming out. His feet and hands were vinyl, and had gotten that sticky feel that old vinyl sometimes gets.... and he needed a bath!

It took almost a year, but in December, the monster's family wrote again. Could we schedule treatment and an appointment for him?

Of course! The hospital was pretty full at the beginning of the year (not uncommon) so we scheduled his appointment for early March.

He arrived and the first step was a spa. He's quite large, so he got the large pink tub. :-)

Next he got restuffed, with a heart of original stuffing included ... who knows where his magic is stored, so it's important to keep at least a bit of original stuffing!

For his feet and hands, I can't replicate the printed nails on vinyl, but we didn't really want to do vinyl again anyway for the feel. So his person and I agreed to recover his feet and hands in new black velvet and then give him new nails from felt in the same teal as the originals. Here he is showing off his manicure and pedicure:

And here he is all better... even his fabric surrounding his tusks has been reglued:

and so he flew home to Colorado!
