Book review - The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens
This is a murder mystery/thriller. A college student named Joe has to interview an elder and write a short biography on their life for his English course. Since his grandfather has died and he has no other older friends or family members, he goes to a local nursing home to interview someone. There he meets Carl Iverson, a former Vietnam vet who was convicted of a rape and murder. He was sentenced to life in prison, but gets paroled  because of his terminal cancer diagnosis. Joe wants to interview him, and Carl agrees. Lo and behold, Joe and his friend Lila discover that things are not as they seem! Carl may be innocent.
As he endeavors to find out the truth about the murder, Joe must also care for his autistic brother Jeremy. Joe had left home because of his alcoholic mother’s mood swings, and discovers that in his absence she started scapegoating Jeremy instead of him. This book gets bonus points for giving the narrator a background and side story because in general the characters in thrillers tend to be very flat. But it also loses points for being somewhat predictable and having several implausible scenes.

23 Books in 2023
I was tagged by @duchess-of-tales to name 23 books I've read in 2023. Have to admit that I haven't actually read any of these, but listened to them as audio books instead. So, here are 23 audio books I've listened to in 2023 (in chronological order):
Helen Fields: Perfect Remains (all 5 books of the series)
Astrid Fitz: Der dunkle Himmel
Ellen Sandberg: Die Schweigende
Ezekiel Boone: The Hatching
Las Kepler: The Hypnotist (8 of 9 books of the series)
Charlotte Link: Haus der Schwestern
Tana French: The Secret Place
Philipp P. Peterson: Vakuum
Stephen King: 11/22/63
Andy Weir: The Martian
Max Brooks: World War Z
Nathan Hill: The Nix
Lothar-Günther Buchheim: Das Boot
Dan Simmons: The Terror
Allen Eskens: The Life We Bury
Primo Levi: If This Is a Man
Robert Harris: Fatherland
Eva Garcia Saenz: The Silence of the White City (all 3 books of the series)
John Grisham: The Racketeer
Frederick Forsyth: The Odessa File
Andreas Gruber: Das Eulentor
Steve Cavanagh: The Defense (4 of 6 books of the series)
Donna Tartt: The Secret History
I've listened to at least twice as many audio books than listed here. Probably about 2 per week. I'm an audio book addict, hands down.
Well, I'd like to tag @cafeleningrad, @jessthebooklover (for obvious name reasons), @bloody-wonder and @myrxellabaratheon for this one.

Book Journal
Similar to my manga/comic journal, this text post will be my personal notes for where I'm at with reading from day to day. I tend to hop around from book to book instead of going start to finish so that's why I'll end up talking about more than one sometimes.
2-3-2023:
Earlier this week I finished listening to the audiobooks The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas , and last night I finished The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens. Thus to start my weekend I have picked up listening to The Alpha's Son by Penny Jessup, since I still wasn't feeling up for continuing The Martian. I always like to have a couple audiobooks on hand to hop back and forth on.
For physical books, I checked out The Winged Histories by Sofia Samatar, but since I'm reading the Jellyfish Princess Manga I haven't started this particular book yet.

REVIEW
Fadeaway Joe by Hugh Lessig
Dementia is a difficult and deadly disease that eventually sees the diagnosed fading away. Joe will fade away at some point in the future but he finds he still has quite a bit to accomplish before that day will arrive and hopes to have the time to achieve the new goals that he begins to see and focus on in this story.
What I liked:
* Joe: enforcer for Maxi, worked hard in his parents’ business, never had a true childhood, finds himself alone at the end of a long association that has suddenly hit a wall, has some interesting experiences during the story, lethal, tough, intriguing
* Donna: Joe’s neighbor, hippy parents, exotic dancer who became a real estate agent, concerned about Joe, Butterbean’s human, caring, kind, has some secrets of her own, a good friend
* Paula: survivor, orphaned young, intelligent, insightful, mechanic, has some bad guys after her, sees something in Joe, good friend, caring, really liked her
* Mia: runs a women’s shelter, someone Paula trusts and confides in, admirable
* Jennifer: someone who tries to counsel, help, and stay in touch with Joe – has some secrets, too
* The location, plot, pacing, and writing
* That I could relate to and like characters who might not be considered “good”
* That the bad guys were thwarted and HOW it was accomplished
* The feel-good ending
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Knowing that there are evil people in the world like the ones in this book
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane for the ARC – This is my honest review.

BLURB
Perfect for fans of S. A. Cosby and Allen Eskens, Joe Pendergast must go all in one last time as he grapples with the ghosts of his past–and present–in this gritty, high-stakes thriller. Sixty-four-year-old Joe has known violence his entire life. For forty years, he’s worked as an enforcer for loan shark and close friend Maxie Smith, breaking more than a few bones along the way. When Maxie abruptly fires him, Joe isn’t sure where to lay the blame—on Maxie, the man he once considered his brother, or on the early-onset Alzheimer’s that made Maxie lose faith in him in the first place. To keep his head above water, he begins to operate a food truck that’s barely getting by. Desperate to regain some purpose in his life, Joe makes a life-altering decision: he’s going to take down Maxie Smith by any means necessary, once and for all. However, his plan of revenge is sidelined when he meets twenty-two-year-old Paula Jessup, a wise-cracking amateur detective with a few scheming cards up her sleeve, who’s on the run from a trafficking ring she’s been investigating. The two form an unlikely bond: Paula needs some protection and Joe needs a purpose. With the stakes running high and the clock ticking down—will this gamble pay off?

The Heavens May Fall, by Allen Eskens
Reviewed by Lydia Nolan You may have noticed, I am a fan of Allen Eskens. This is the last review of his novels since he’s written seven and I’ve read and reviewed them all, except this one. I have to wait until he writes another before I can review any more of his books, so here is the last review. I will say, this one is a favorite of mine, although I say that about them all. I love that he…

Book 4/30 for 2020
Sweet and a bit emotional, but nothing really unique about it. Enjoyable enough to have listened to it in one go while doing chores yesterday. Doubt I’d have been able to get through it if I had to sit and read it. Great narration.
That mother really pissed me off, though 🤬
