On This Day in New York City History March 16, 1827: The Freedom Journal which was fhe first African American-owned and operated newspaper in the United States was founded by John Brown Russwurm and Samuel Eli Cornish. The newspaper covered such issues as education, health, jobs and social events for free blacks not only in NYC but throughout the Northeast. After a falling out between co-founders, the focus for the newspaper would center on the movement for the return of Blacks to Africa in the form of the new colony of Liberia. This practice established by the American Colonial Society started in 1820. Liberia would become the first African colony to become an independent nation in 1847. The paper would cease publication in 1829. #FreedomJournal #AfricanAmericanHistory #AfricanAmericanStudies #BlackHistory #BlackStudies #BlackHistoryMatters #JohnBrowbRusswurm #SamuelEliCornish #NewspaperHistory #NewYorkHistory #NYHistory #NYCHistory #History #Historia #Histoire #Geschichte #HistorySisco https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp2dFnHur0k/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It was announced today that actress Nichelle Nichols famed for playing Communication Officer Lieutenant Nyota Uhura on the original Star Trek series and subsequent movies passed away at the age of 89.
Nichols, in her portrayal of Uhura, was a role model for many African Americans. Not many African American actors could be seen on TV in such a high profile role. Even when Nichols wanted to leave, she was asked by Reverend Martin Luther King Jr to stay in the role since what the show was showing was the future for African Americans. To be equal with not only other races but other beings. Dr. King was a big fan of not only Nichols but of Star Trek as well.
Rest in Peace. Thank you for your grace throughout the years.

9/16ths of second.
That's all it took.
15 years ago Janet Jackson was labeled that hypersexualized Black woman that purposely wanted to show her nipples in front of millions during the Superbowl half time show. At the time I was only 7, so I did not understand the complexity of coverage that depicted Janet Jackson as the sole perpetrator.
What I grew up to understand was white male privilege was real and the countering of Justin Timberlake’s media blame proved just that. After viewing the video multiple times  I pondered why the blame was not on Justin Timberlake since it was evident he pulled the clothing off of Jackson. But then I stepped back and realized Janet Jackson was not only a woman, but a Black woman. Justin Timberlake was not only a man but a White man.  On top of the Jackson’s “Provocative” music it was easy to blame Jackson. This blame narrative is not new though.
Throughout history blaming Black women because they are deemed to be sexual creatures has dated back to slavery. This blame turned into an actual caricature of a Jezebel. A Jezebel can be described as a promiscuous and seductive Black woman. This narrative frames Black women to be sexual creatures that gave further justification for exploitation.
The explotation of Janet Jackson can be seen through a framework of body politics. Janet Jackson was blackballed by not only by the MTV but the CBS network. Justin Timberlake was not. White male priveldge could explain this.  15 years later Justin Timberlake was allowed to perform at the Superbowl again. Do you believe Janet Jackson will be extended the same offer?

WE ARE ALL DIRTY COMPUTERS
Have you watched Janelle Monáe’s emotion picture, Dirty Computer? Well if you haven’t you should. It is the epitome of Afrofuturism. I define Afrofuturism as the arts of the African diaspora in the most uniquely imaginative way. There are no boundaries within Afrofuturism, and Janelle Monáe clearly exemplifies this in her emotion picture, while also bringing to light prominent issues in today’s society. In her emotion picture, everything heavily relies on technology and everything is very theatrical in every aspect. Throughout the short film, Monáe, whose character is Jane, is undergoing a process, in which her memories are wiped out completely. This is all in an effort to assimilate her into this “normal structured” society. This is a theme that is parallel to real experiences in the African diaspora today. Many Black people have tried their hardest to assimilate into their respective societies in search of creating a normal life for themselves. Normal meaning, being treated the same as all people no matter skin color, sexual orientation, religion, and more. At the end of the day no matter how hard Black people try to obtain equal treatment, the first thing people see is the color of their skin. When people see Black skin, there are many preconceived notions that come along with it and treatment of Black bodies and people are different. In the film this is shown through the institution continuously trying to suppress Jane’s memories. The erasure of her memories will theoretically allow the institution to recreate a clean Jane that they can mold into what they want. It is ironic, that this institution is aiming to delete Jane’s history, because I feel like a lot of times people try to delete prominent moments in Black history. This erasure of Black history allows White people to maintain control over many narratives. This then leaves Black people with no agency. This is similar to how Jane has no agency over memories or body in Dirty Computer. Taking away history is very important in the oppression of one’s culture. This makes it a lot easier for people to assimilate into society, which is essentially what this institution wants Jane to do in the film. All these ideas are present in Dirty Computer, which is important because Afrofuturism does not only look at the future. Afrofuturism takes into context the past, how it has shaped history, and the intersections between both, all while looking at all the possibilities that could happen.

On This Day in New York City History February 20, 1895: Former slave, abolitionist and civil rights advocate Frederick Douglass (February 1818 - February 20, 1895) passes away at the age of 77 or 78.
Douglass escaped slavery via the Underground Railroad arriving in NYC in 1838. Douglass would figure heavily in the history of NYC's abolition movement leading up to and during the Civil War. Douglass gave a series of speeches at Cooper Union including The Proclamation and the Negro Army which was given on February 3, 1863.
Post Civil War, Douglass continued to work for the freedom of not only blacks but of women in the areas of voting rights and would lend his support to Ida B. Wells' anti-lynching campaign.
Douglass would pass away at either the age of 77 or 78 in Washington D.C.
