“It’s the number one dating app in the nation!”
“Someone will stick around to the end,” he says it like a promise, but Sokka can’t find his eyes in the dim light of their living room. “In the meantime, you need to shower. You smell like alcohol and desperation.”
“I hate you.”
“No you don’t.”
And Sokka doesn’t, of course.

When I started shipping them: February 2021, when i finished watching book 1 of atla for the first time. after "you rise with the moon, i rise with the sun", i was a goner.
My thoughts: beautiful, talented, show stopping, spectacular, never before done, marvelous, amazing, absolute perfection. i wouldn't change a single thing about them, i love them so much, and i will never stop believing that they were happy and in love together, canon be damned.
What makes me happy about them: literally everything. i love their development, i love their symbolism, i love that they go from fighting each other to risking absolutely everything to save each other. i love that they're the only people to see each other at their absolute best and worst, i love that they unconditionally support and are there for each other, i love that they get to be open and vulnerable with each other in a way they rarely are with anyone else. i love how much they have in common, i love how beautiful they look together, i love that they're fire and water, i love that they encapsulate the themes of the show perfectly. they're just *chef's kiss*
What makes me sad about them: that their beautiful, deep, intimate relationship was thrown out the window as if it never existed post show. obviously, i'm sad they were never canon, but it's somehow more hurtful that the writers destroyed their wonderful platonic connection too. it breaks my heart to think that after everything they went through, after being the only people who could truly understand each other, they spent the rest of their lives as nothing more than acquaintances. fuck that.
Things done in fanfic that annoys me: when zuko is made out to be some sort of smirking, smooth bad boy, like... did yall watch the show? zuko is an awkward turtleduck with a penchant for excessive drama, not a wattpad romantic lead. give me a zuko who can barely string a cohesive sentence together because he's so dazzled by katara, or give me nothing.
Things I look for in fanfic: zuko being a complete simp for katara (absolute must), fire lord and southern water tribe ambassador fix its, fire lady katara who retains her culture but also loves the fire nation with all her heart, modern au tea shop zutara, FAKE DATING, canon divergences where they end up having to travel together, aang letting go of his crush on katara and being happy to see his friends in love, mutual pining (on ember island or post atla).
My wishlist: time traveling back to 2008 to kick bryke off the show and write the last half of book 3 myself
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: probably ty lee or sokka for zuko, and suki for katara. imo, zuko is the only male character on the show who could form a happy, healthy and lasting relationship with katara.
My happily ever after for them: fire lord zuko and fire lady katara usher the world into a golden age of peace and prosperity together, working to fix the damage done by years of war and rebuild the ties between their countries. they are second in fame only to the avatar, with hundreds of statues built and cities named in their honour. they remain very much in love to the end of their long, happy lives.

So he storms right up to Ozai and tells him what he's going to do. And gets locked up for over three years. Then, one day, he's being pulled out and told he's the new Fire Lord.
A "Zuko never meets the Gaang and suddenly becomes Fire Lord after three years of literal torture" AU. In which the Gaang doesn't know what to think of the new Fire Lord who happens to be the missing nephew of Aang's firebending teacher, Iroh constantly has a headache, and, sure, maybe the world hates the Fire Nation, but the Fire Nation LOVES Zuko, and he can work with that.

I’ve redrawn and coloured my earlier quick and dirty sketch of S1 Zuko with a turtleduck (Aang, aka Fuzzball) in his neck guard. Illustration for Chapter 8 of Aang, Sokka, and Katara are Awkward Turtleducks (Literally) by @lynzine.
I misplaced Zuko on the page when I started and by the time I realised the ponytail was going to get a bit squashed I had done enough that I didn’t want to start again.
This is me getting my colouring pencils out for the first time in probably about 15 years. Thank you @lynzine for the inspiration!

Every Kid in ATLA is a Massive Victim of Imperialism, But for Some Reason the ATLA Fandom is Obsessed with Only Exploring Zuko’s Status as Victim.
To be clear, Zuko is absolutely a massive victim of imperialism and imperialist violence and 120% deserves sympathy for it. But Suki, Aang, Katara, Azula, Jet, Yue, Longshot, Smellerbee, Ty Lee, the Duke, Pipsqueak, Toph, Mai, Sneers, Hahn, Song, Jin, Haru, Teo, etc. are all also victims of imperialism in one way or another, and it has a serious negative effect on all them. Half the Gaang are literally victims of genocides!
But for some reason, this fandom seems obsessed with only exploring “Awkward Turtleduck” Zuko’s status as a victim. There are literally thousands of fanfics dedicated to exploring how hurt Zuko is and how much of a victim he is, with no other character receiving anywhere near the same attention. For instance, I struggle to remember seeing any fanfics or takes ever which focused on Sokka’s status as a victim of genocide, or his hurt over losing his mother, or his pain in general.
Sometimes it seems like the fandom has taken the victimhood of all these many children and combined it and applied it to “perfect victim” Zuko, and that’s just disappointing.

Ok but zukki/suzukka dynamic
Zuko: hot-headed and depressed firelord (look I know he is agressive and awkward but after all of that "firebending masters" episode I just think he is Zuko but with a slightly better temper)
Sokka: inventor and councilman with ADHD (I need to explain nothing) also artist; autor and all the other good stuff
Suki: Anxiety(x Coffein all the time :D) driven workaholic warrior and bodyguard bitch that skips meals; she also trains the new kyoshi warriors and works out late way to often and long (her heartrate would litherally make Toph go crazy; also I belive she became a councilwoman after some years lmao but still a workaholic maniac)
Zuko has to get forced out of his office six times a month, Suki and Sokka sit with him at the turtleduck pound and they all look at the clouds together and watch the sunset, while cuddling under the trees. He has a tendency of forgetting to drink so they force him to, every day. He thinks it's annoying but cute.
Sokka doesn't have to get dragged, Suki and Zuko always listen to his ideas and also tell him some of theirs, Sokka normal never hyper focuses after 6pm but sometimes when it happened Suki and Zuko just talk him out, then they would walk around with him and fly on druck; sokka is the least problematic one; when it comes to sleep because he can talk endlessly about his newest ideas (he always falls asleep last)
Suki has to get dragged to their room every single day (literally); normally Sokka and Zuko have to physically restrain her from training at like 10pm; they wrap her in blankets until she can't get away; than they feed her if she skipped meals or else they feed her tea and cookes (Suki found out the heard way that eating is in fact something you would want to do if you don't want to black out or collapse :D but beeing in preason and having less to eat changed her diet, so she did nothing wrong...) after that incident Sokka and Zuko make sure she eats at least two meals, snacks and tea; and wait for her to fall asleep first; in the mornings they try to keep the coffein away from her but fail miserablely.
Honorable mention:
Suki is Katara and Toph's favourite in the relationship, cs she's a cool warrior that can beat ass, girlboss, FEMINISM, just their cool big sister. Sokka can't be their favourite because it is just who it is done and Zuko isn't a girl. (don't get me wrong they love all of them... But if they had to choose...)
Aang can't choose and won't choose even if he had to.
