In the mirror scene, I always felt like it was less Azula looking for comfort, and more her looking for answers. She achieved everything she possibly could, killing the Avatar, conquering Ba Sing Se, becoming Fire Lord, but she is more alone than ever. And she doesn’t understand why she feels this way, she doesn’t know what to do. She really is just so confused.
And Azula is a child. And it’s an adult’s job to help a child who doesn’t know what to do. An adult’s job to guide them. A parent’s job, to be more specific. But her father left her, and her mother had never been there. So she desperately imagines her mother in an attempt to make sense of things but. We all know how that went.
Ooh, okay, make that scene even more sad than it already was, why don't you?
I think maybe Azula and Ursa just never... understood each other, always just a half step away from realizing why there was such a divide between them. She hallucinates her mother for a few reasons, probably - she's scared, confused, everything is going wrong when it should be going right - and Ursa tells her she loves her.
Which might've helped on literally any other day. It doesn't matter if someone loves her, she's still alone and she still doesn't understand what she's done wrong, if anything. Love is completely useless to her, in this moment. And that's heartbreaking.

The Final Agni Kai always gets me so So SO very badly. It’s genuinely got to be one of the best animated fights in history I swear.
It’s just. It’s a protagonist we’ve known from the very beginning, who we watched grow so so much, fighting against a vicious villain who he’s never been able to defeat, who is cunning and powerful, who’s been almost (keyword almost) untouchable throughout the entire series. And they are fighting with such brilliant firepower and it’s breathtaking and beautiful and it should be a glorious battle, it should be epic, it should feel victorious, but! But.
It doesn’t…. It doesn’t at all. The music is somber. The sounds muffled. You just. See it all as it is. This is not an epic fight. This is two children, two siblings, fighting to the death. This is what this war has made of them.
I mean, “You and me brother. The showdown that was always meant to be.” How can you hear that and not see the tragedy?
It’s such a beautiful fight, impossible to take your eyes away from it; and at the same time it’s so hard to watch. It’s just. So sad. So so very sad. My heart just aches whenever I think of these two.
Tragedy.
That's exactly the word for it. The Final Agni Kai, the Boss Battle, the Prophesied Fight Between Siblings, the culmination of two characters’ arcs who have always been rivals. It should be triumphant, Zuko being able to take her head-on after having him lose time and time again to her. And maybe if she were more like when she was initially introduced, it would’ve been triumphant.
But it’s not. This is deeply sad, deeply sad only, and I’m almost surprised at how well the show itself acknowledged the tragedy in all this. Azula’s cracking at the seams and that’s heartbreaking. Zuko even having to be the one to fight her at all is, too. I hope Katara gives Sokka a hug after all this. I hope that Azula and Zuko are able to interact again, years from now, maybe. I hope that one day they’re allowed to be siblings for the first time in their lives.
Their battle was absolutely breathtaking.

.....Zuko's down. He's not dead, he can't be, but he's down for sure. Katara's going to have to take Azula on by herself.

GOD.
I... honestly don’t have a lot to say right now. This episode was a masterpiece. I’ve just spent the last few minutes sitting here in silence. I don’t know what I could say.
Zuko’s down, Suki is god knows where, Sokka and Toph are in the middle of a new ship graveyard that’s going to be crawling with firebenders, Aang is basically trapped, and Katara’s going to have to face Azula alone. Fucking hell.
I could write more, but I want to simmer on this a little, maybe wait to watch the finale so I can make an entire word-vomit essay about the four finale episodes. Wow. Wow. Wow.
....And now I have to go to work? After that??

And Azula's still more powerful, but Zuko's centered now, and Azula is very much not. She's cracking at the seams and Zuko's never been more at peace.

.....Ow. So that's how Azula sees herself and the world. Fear is the only reliable way, and yet, after all the fear in the world, she's still alone.

“Shit shit shit shit shit shit is he going to redirect it right back towards her? That'd be an interesting parallel - Aang nit being able to do that to Ozai and then Zuko redirecting it towards Azula...”
Holy hell, I rewatched this show like a million of times but never considered this possibility. What actually happened is pretty significant and in character for everyone involved, but this is a very interesting concept, gosh!!! (Now I lowkey want fanfics of this oh no.)
Yeah I don't think I would've preferred that to what actually happened, but I'm really curious whether or not Zuko would've hit Azula with her own lightning. I highly doubt she knows how to redirect it, so it would definitely take her down. On the other hand, if he specifically chose to not take the shot and simply redirect it away just like Aang had... I wonder if that would've maybe changed something for Azula. I guess we'll never know.
If anyone does have fics where this happens, I'd also love to read them!

i think ozai's expression is partially fear and partially "oh god, he actually did it", the last time he saw zuko he was getting lightning shot at him, and then zuko went to train the avatar, and now the avatar shows up and redirects lightning. ozai realized that zuko taught him that
YEAH I completely forgot to mention that but it was ringing in my head when I watched the scene: even though Aang didn't redirect the lightning back towards Ozai, just the fact that he was capable of it is a victory for Zuko. Ozai knows exactly who taught that to Aang.
