Cutie Reviews: Kawaii Box May 19

Before I begin I have an announcement: later/tomorrow I plan to post a sort of... glossaryish post that will be about ALL the boxes I subscribe to :D Because earlier today it occurred to me, I never really talk about the brands themselves anymore unless they have some update or if I complain in my reviews. I thought this type of post would be nice for anyone who just wanted to learn more about a specific box to see if they would be interested in it. I will also be including my own opinions on the box as a whole, pros and cons, how the box has changed, etc.

So if you like things like that, then make sure you come back soon!

Word of the month: Tanjyoubi - Birthday

Disney Princess Dress-Up Puffy Stickers

Our first item is a set of Disney Princess Ariel/Little Mermaid stickers. Covered to the brim with stickers, this sheet has multiple outfits, accessories/props, and deco bits to have fun with the sticker doll and then-some!

Besides Ariel, there are other Disney Princess and I’ve even seen they added a really cute Minnie mouse one on Blippo.com. Those in this set each cost $3.90.

I was really torn between all 3 dresses, the turquoise one was a classic for Ariel, and I love how the pink one reminded me of Aurora, but I actually settled for the purple one because I though it looked really pretty on her. Then I chose the shell purse and matching decoration/accessory and a light pink sash to add more to her dress, what do you think?

While on the subject, which dress would you have chose for her? Or would you have given her a different colored dress entirely?

It’s really simple, but it’s also pretty fun and cute, I love dress-up stickers because of how creative you can be. I mentioned this before but I really want to start a scrapbook or photobook and fill it entirely with dress-ups~

The stickers puffiness is nice and soft, and I like how these don’t feel finished. So I could go back to it a few days later and swap out her purse and hair piece to make her classier with a sun hat. Or I could give her the turquoise dress if I wanted.

Sanrio Ziptop Bag Set

Next up is this pack of adorable Pompompurin zipper bags. You get 6 in total, including 3 Small 70mm x100mm, and 3 Medium 160mm x 190mm. Each set offers different designs, and besides Pompompurin (who I couldn’t find on blippo btw) there was also the other basic characters like my Melody, Gudetama, Little Twin Star. Each set costs $5.90.

I think these are really cute, and practical :D according to the back of the package you could put all sorts of things in these, and I like that both sets are zip-locks. These would be a perfect gift for any Pompompurin fan.

Kawaii Dreams File

This is the monthly Exclusive item, a file folder featuring a variety of kawaii designs and items you can find on the Kawaii Box box and booklet, with the inside panel being white and pink to match the box’s color scheme. It’s kinda small-medium, about the size of the booklet that comes in each box, and it’s a little flimsy, but for most part it feels durable and sturdy.

You can buy this off of Blippo for $2.90.

I usually don’t look forward to getting these files in the boxes because as cute as they are, they’re always big and bent. This one fits in the box with no problem, so I feel like even though you would need to fold certain things into it, it’s more practical. I also like how despite how colorful and busy it looks, it doesn’t feel too-busy.

Soft Jell Rainbow Gel Pen Set

I loved gel pens growing up x3 my friends and I loved to draw on our things and each other during class (but only when we weren’t actually doing anything important <3< I wasn’t a model student but I didn’t get into trouble either), and I remember just admiring the massive rainbow collection my friend had; she must have had at least 100!

My collection was much smaller and modest though, I only had a few glittery metallic ones and a couple multicolored pastels. So for someone who used to love these, getting a whole pretty set like this just made my day~

It’s also pretty rare for us to get a whole set of anything in the boxes. If you’ve seen my prior reviews (or check out the items on blippo) its usually just one separate of your choosing. This set costs $6.90.

The colors are vibrant and really pretty, as you can see I did decorate the box with them which in hindsight might not have been the best thing to do, but they still worked once the ink got flowing. They’re juicy and are capable of long lines, writing, dots, coloring.

My only complaint is that both blues (or I suppose you could say one is indigo? Turquoise?) look almost exactly alike. It’s the same in the actual pens, but there’s still a noticeable difference until you go to use them both, so I wish they would have darkened or lightened one of them to make the difference more noticeable.

Cute Animal Friend Masking Tape & Nekoni Cherry Blossoms Badge

For our next items, I got bunnies for both ♥

First is an adorable pastel bunny washi tape that consists of a kawaii bunny doing some silly actions. I would have taken out a piece to show the design, but when I unraveled a long, long amount of it I saw no end to the pattern >3< like it kept going, there was no repeat bunnies. Each bunny was cuter, or sillier than the last.

There are several varieties you could get, and you can guy them in sets of 4 for $5.90 on Blippo.

Well besides being very cute and silly to look at, I like how this doesn’t seem to be repetitive like most tapes. I’m sure it starts repeating somewhere but for now, I just think it would be cute to use them individually as little emoji icons, like for notes or letters or something.

From the brand Nekoni are these adorable pastel badges with cherry blossom designs, ranging from animals, a human girl, scenery, and adorable foods. Each badge costs $1.90.

It’s very cute, but there isn’t really much I can say about a badge other than the fact it seems to be fine quality. There was no problems with it or anything to complain about.

Cute Stationery Buddy

This probably would have been better suited for a school theme- but you also use stuff like this to decorate :P so, our next item is an adorable, soft but firm plush themed after various stationery items. There are 7 in total, each with a ball chain and costing $4.90.

I really hope I’m not the only person, but when I saw this (and even now) I think of a snail; it’s a roll of tape! I was so surprised initially but now that I’ve had it for a while I’ve been seeing it more.

Again, I find myself with little to say. It’s really cute though, and the quality is nice, there’s no obvious flaws or issues.

Yogurt Jelly Hair Clip Set

In comparison to stationery, we always get sets of hair clips so I’m happy about that :3 I love their kawaii hair clips and accessories, they’re usually always one of my most favorite items~

Anyway, this set is themed after yogurt jelly and features a small translucent clip attached to a clear, colorful, glittery yogurt jelly attached to it, each with labels, a colorful lid, and a tiny lotte written in the corner. These come in several cute color schemes, each set costs $2.90.

As I’ve been saying this entire review, these are very cute. They’re also well made, in that the pieces don’t feel loose or flimsy, which has been in a problem with one or two past-sets I’ve gotten, but you can easily fix that with some good glue. I was also very happy to get a very pink set, but you couldn’t go wrong with any of them in my opinion!

DIY Fruity Doodle Pen & Flower Candy

Our last item is this cute little fruity doodle set. Technically I don’t consider this to be a DIY considering you’re just spreading gel on the gummies, but it’s very cute and I really wanted to try it. I started seeing it like a year or two ago?

It’s available on Blippo for $3.50.

As you can see, I got tons of yellow gummies, along with a single pink, and two blues. The gel is supposed to be sour, but it’s actually very light- it reminds me a lot of strawberry jello/gelatin. The gummies are individually flavored, and this is what I thought:

Yellow - might be apricot? It tastes a lot like the apricot jelly filling in the mochi I buy from the mall.

Blue - my favorite, tastes like blue raspberry.

Pink - no flavor I could pick up, just sweetness.

As I said, I’m not sure this is entirely a DIY so I didn’t make a separate post on it. All you do is apply the jelly, which I thought actually tasted the best out of everything in the set, but it was very tasty and cute overall, I just wish the colors/flavors of the flowers were more varied.

Content - 5 out of 5: I’m not sure they were all my absolute favorite or anything, but I did genuinely like everything we got this month. I found no quality issues or problems, plenty of variety in both the types of items, and for each item. A very practical and fun box. Some items were fairly pricey though, and I’m not sure if I agreed with some of those. Also, we got one item less than usual, which I assume has something to do with the price?

Theme - ????? out of 5: I found this Happy Birthday theme to be extremely open and up for interpretation, so I had I’m not sure how I feel about how they did on it. On one hand I could say “yes, these are items you could use for gifts or decoration for a birthday“, but on another I’d say “sakura badges and yogurt hair clips don’t make me think of a birthday.”

Total Rank: 8.5 out of 10 Cuties. I liked the items, and I can see why they chose the theme they did, but because of how open it is, I’m not sure how my feelings are towards it. The items worked great and I would recommend mostly all of them. I’m not sure this is my favorite box though...

(I’m sorry but I ended up skipping the last part of this review, I was fine this entire time but towards the end things got really busy in the house and I’m not feeling well at the time. I would have went to lay down but my laptop has been weird lately and I didn’t want to risk losing the work T^T sorry if you were looking forward to that part.)

writings about juni as an oc

30 questions about Juni (with unnecessarily long answers), from this SSO OC asks posts except i just filled it all out in one go. i want to try developing her into a more detailed character just for fun so this seemed like the best way to start! i hadn’t decided anything about her besides “non-binary and pan” until starting to fill this out hahah, i just tapped into my jorvegian feels and went along with what felt right.

this is already stated on my “about” page but, to be clear, Juni is some kinda persona/OC thingy and not “me”, while having some traits and details inspired by my real self. (you can definitely get to know about me by reading this, but, it’s not me me.)

BASIC CHARACTER INFO (remember her details are not mine!) Name: Juni Ravenhall Age: around 18-20 i guess, don’t wanna make her too old to fit with the other characters in the story. Gender: non-binary / genderfluid?, but more or less OK with her female body, and she’s fine with any pronouns. Sexuality: panromantic pansexual.

1. What is their home stable in-game? Why?

South Hoof Peninsula (headcanon:ing that there is a home stable there, obviously) because it’s her home. While travelling she makes use of stables and accomodations anywhere, so some people know her in the places she stays over a lot (Valedale, Moorland, others).

2. Where do they actually live in Jorvik?

Her home is on South Hoof, although she doesn’t stay there for long periods of time anymore with all the travelling and adventures going on. She was born in Valedale, but was taken to South Hoof as a small child. (My headcanon is that there’s a few more people living on the peninsula than what’s shown in-game.) It’s worth noting she’s an orphan (or is she...?! *dun dun dun*) so she grew up without a biological family. (btw, that’s not just to be dramatic... I’m from an abusive home and parents mean nothing to me, so I wouldn’t be able to relate to her as much if I gave her some kind of normal, caring parents, I don’t know that stuff. I’d much rather she has no parents / doesn’t know her parents, than that she has to grow up with awful ones.)

3. Who is their favorite NPC?

Hmm, I would make up some OCs for her proper personal story, but out of the NPCs that exist..... (these are not all my favourites, just some of them that I think works well for her story.) - She knows everyone at South Hoof to some degree since she grew up there, I think she’s especially close with Jonas as a parent-figure of sorts, and of course, Madison. She helps the hermit and is on good terms with him. When Hugh moved there, she started making friends with him, I imagine they’ll get close as Juni really cares about animal rescue. - She's fairly close to Conrad, mix of mentor, friend and parent-figure. (He’s taught her more than what’s shown in canon, and she visits him anytime she’s staying in Moorland.) - She likes helping Agnetha and Björn with their garden projects so they have a friendly relation, though casual. It’s the kind of thing where she’ll stay over and help them for a few days, and at the end of the day they have cozy outdoor dinners outside the house, watching the sunset view from the cliff and smelling the roses. They probably get some great fresh food from around Silverglade. - I think she's somewhat friends with Ed at Wolf Hell Inn (or stays over and sees what crazy stuff he’s up to often enough). - She definitely likes Rania and like going out for rides with her, whether there’s a special cause or not. I forget the name of that crazy ranger girl... but she likes her and Alonso too. - She likes hanging out with Mario, and they’ll have picnics on the mountain or on top of the observatory after she’s been helping him out, watching the stars together (platonically). - She’s a wary friend of the Bobcats and Justin, like, they could be friends (since she’s at Moorland often enough) but they aren’t quite. I think she gets along with Josh (pole bending guy). - I was going to write about the soul riders and druids... but I think in my made-up headcanon, Juni's situation and role in the soul rider team would be different. I’ll have to think more about it.

4. Who is their Soul Steed? What breed are they? Do they have any markings or look different in some way from the in-game appearance you could give them?

Winterborn, a Jorvik Warmblood stallion (here’s his tag on my blog). He’s a brave and loving companion, thoughtful sometimes, a bit silly and spoiled sometimes. His bond with Juni is very strong. He probably does look a bit different in my headcanon but I’d have to draw/edit it to make a decision, so let’s leave that in the air for now...

5. What is their favorite location? (Ex, Hollow Woods, Greendale, Silverglade Manor Library) Why?

- South Hoof, as her adopted home, and because of the ancient and “wild and free” energy it has. She feels relaxed and at home there, and somehow connected to the magic of the land (even before she learns about magic). - Valedale and the surrounding areas like Hollow Woods, where she feels a nagging sense of nostalgia and belonging, a tingling mysterious feeling (similar but not the same as what she feels on South Hoof). She loves the flowers, buildings and nature there. - Moorland Forge, for Conrad. - Agnetha and Björn’s gardens. - Wolf Hell Inn, she likes it there and (as mentioned) she likes seeing what weird stuff Ed is up to. - Dino Valley, she loves the winter, the solitude, and the challenge of survival (she’s an adventurer after all). - Crescent Moon Village, just for how cozy it is, and the Mirror Marshes, for its beauty. There’s a lot of spots around New Hillcrest and Epona she likes in general too. - Goldenhills Valley, she loves the autumn colours and the ruins, and takes an interest in the witchcraft that she sees, starting to wonder what’s good and bad magic. - Cape West, a cute little village to visit now and then. - Jarlaheim, as a place to hang out and shop / rest, after a day of helping out with farm chores around the area. - Greendale, where it seems like faeries might pop out if you’re quiet enough. - Ydris’ circus, because she can’t help but get curious about it. (I love circus / fairground aesthetics personally... I’m one of those people who’s always loved clowns and everyone else is like “what?! clowns are creepy man!”) - Mistfall and Firgrove are places she likes both for the nature and buildings, but she doesn’t tend to stay there long. - The Observatory, and other spots high up with great views, like the shortcut between Firgrove and Valedale, and the secret path up the mountain in Firgrove, too. - Aideen’s Plaza in Jorvik City, a cozy and fun place when you need a break from the countryside, especially if there’s an event / festival / market going on. - Pandoria? -- there’s certainly something about it...

6. Who’s their favorite horse? Why?

I’m going to say Juni doesn’t own any other horse than Winterborn, at least at this time. (Obviously I have lots in-game but for this OC story it doesn’t really make sense, so let’s say the rest aren’t canon, haha. Maybe they’re horses she’ll own later in life.)

7. What are their powers? Are they stronger with one Circle over any of the others?

Hmm... I dunno, I have to think more about this one. I probably want to draw some pictures to figure out more about her relation to magic and Pandoria and all that.

8. What’s their usual style? Any favorite tack sets or color themes for them?

She likes all colours and likes putting together new outfits and tack sets of various styles, but some particular favourite colours are red and purple, and overall her style tends to be bold and graphic rather than soft or gentle. She can do soft and gentle too though, when she feels like it!

9. Thoughts about Jorvik City? How do they feel about Rania’s petition for a horse-friendly Jorvik City?

She likes it there (especially Aideen’s Plaza as mentioned), but definitely thinks that there’s such a thing as “too much city” and has to retreat to nature after some time there. A horse-friendly city would be nice, as Winterborn would probably really enjoy getting spoiled with treats at the Plaza on a warm evening, getting petted by nice strangers.

10. Thoughts about Justin? (I’m sorry, I’m curious, he shows up so much)

She pities him in a kind way, thinks he’s sensitive and immature. She wouldn’t mind being friends with him once he starts growing as a person. She also likes lasagna, so they could organise a lasagna party together with the Bobcats sometime.

11. How do they feel about the magical horse race at the circus? Did they enjoy being a horse?

While she doesn’t like how Ydris treats people, she thought it was really interesting and insane, and had a lot of thoughts about what magic is / what magic can do after starting to come into contact with all its different types (Pi, Ydris, the soul riders and druids, etc etc). Maybe being able to turn into a horse at will and gallop around with Winterborn would be really cool!

12. Do they trust the Druids? Or how do they feel about them?

Once she starts getting to know about them, she trusts them as soon as she knows Conrad is involved with them, because she trusts him. Of course she doesn’t trust them 100%, due to all the weird stuff that goes on, but she trusts that they have good intentions even if it doesn’t always come out right, or maybe the right people aren’t in charge.

13. Least favorite NPC?

That’s a tough one... let’s just say she doesn’t like when people use or abuse others. However, she believes that anyone can change and become a better person, it’s just exceptionally hard for some people (and nobody is entitled to forgiveness). (Honestly it’s just difficult because I’m an open-minded person and I appreciate villainous *fictional* characters for their roles in a story, just as well as I appreciate the heroes and background characters. I don’t see a point in being pissy about fictional villains, they’re just part of a story, and in fiction everyone has a chance at bettering themselves. Plus, the victims of their actions are all fictional... nobody really got hurt. I wouldn’t think IRL people like Tr*mp is going to change for the better, plus even if he did he’s caused a lot of people a lot of harm, so IRL is another thing. but I can accept any character’s change and redemption in fiction because... it’s fiction, a fantasy.)

14. How do they make their money?

Before travelling she made them by doing odd jobs around South Hoof, now she does odd jobs around Jorvik. Often she’ll take a trade and do work for food and someplace to stay for the night instead of getting paid. She sells things she’s found and things she’s made now and then (having some skills in crafts).

15. How many horses do they own?

Same answer as before, as an OC she only owns Winterborn (right now).

16. How many pets do they have? What kind? What are their names?

I don’t think I want her to have any at this time, I might change my mind later. She loves the farm animals and the wild horses on South Hoof, of course, and helps take care of other people’s pets when needed. (I love my baby seal in the game though.)

17. How do they feel about the Soul Riders? Do they trust them? Feel like an outsider? Are they closer to some over the others?

I’ll have to decide on her role in the story and relating to the soul riders before I can answer that, so I’ll leave that for now. I don’t think she’s very close with any of them, if anything it’d be a somewhat good relation with Linda and Alex, I think.

18. Do they believe something mystical, magical, or otherwise strange really exists in Dino Valley? How did they feel about the leaving of the Kallter and the roar/scream/screech in the Valley?

There’s absolutely something strange about it, and her heart beats at the idea of more adventures there. The Kallters must have had a reason to leave.

19. Thoughts about Jorvik Wild Horses?

I think for headcanon OC story purposes, Jorvik Wild Horses and Starbreeds are probably the same thing? Just like, I’d go with that there’s a one type of magic horses with Jorvegian magic (or Pandorian) flowing through them, but then they can look different from each other. In the headcanon there wouldn’t be random Jorvik Wilds running around or anything, it’d be super special rare stuff like the Starbreeds are.

20. Do you think they are a Wild Whisperer? Or are they just bonded with their Soul Steed?

I’m not sure, leaning towards that she’s mostly just bonded with Winterborn. Maybe she has some level of whispering abilities but it’s definitely not one of her strongest skills.

21. What’s their favorite Jorvegian holiday or celebration?

All holidays, any excuse to celebrate, although she prefers peaceful and homely celebrations over parties or high-tempo events. Life is precious, so she celebrates every day to some degree (like I mentioned... sunset picnics, enjoying nature).

22. What do they think or feel about Pandoria? Have they or do they visit outside of the quests (using the rifts)? If they have or still do, why?

I think at the time I would place Juni’s story, she’s only starting to learn about Pandoria and is still confused and thoughtful about the different types and uses of magic. So what she’s going to think of Pandoria and what she’ll do about it would be something to figure out.

23. How has their visit(s) to Pandoria affected them? Do they have scars? Has it affected any of their life views?

See above. But also, since I want to explore Juni’s relation to magic, I’ll say I think the magic (or something else about Pandoria) might start to eat at her, and maybe she starts losing herself a bit the deeper she gets into those thoughts and the magic itself. (Hint... I think it’ll have to do with being an orphan and feeling alone and depressed.)

24. Would they ever consider working for Dark Core or believing their side?

No, I can’t imagine she would unless there was some very specific reason.

25. What or who is Garnok to them? A dark presence? A squid-like monster? A child with a ridiculously complicated jumping course (fuckin @’s Lizzy)?

I love Lizzy’s course lol, but maybe Garnok did have a hand in it... Anyway, I don’t think Juni knows anywhere near enough to have an understanding of Garnok at this point, so it’s just some vague thing the druids aren’t describing enough.

26. Do they ever go to the Disco? If they don’t, would they ever consider going? What would it take to make them go?

She goes sometimes, but she quickly gets tired of both dancing and socialising in crowds and has to wind down afterwards, maybe just sitting down at the disco balcony to look at the ocean, or heading down to the beach to lie down and rest. The evening ride back to her home on South Hoof (or to a place to stay in Moorland if the ferry stopped running) is a moment of winding-down, too.

27. Disco or Moorland Beach party?

The beach party is probably a little more chill, which suits her.

28. Are they interested in helping with archaeology or fishing?

She likes trying to do archaeology, and finds ancient (or just old) things really interesting, but she’s not necessarily the best at it. It’s something she does from time to time, or when someone asks for help. Fishing is something she’d only do when hanging out with someone else.

29. How do they feel about Igor, the waiter/manager of the Dino Valley cafe, and whom seemed interested in your horse for… “culinary reasons?”

She hopes he was joking, and appreciates his efforts in starting up the café since the Dino Valley crew is so small, and everyone needs each others’ help to survive and explore there.

30. Do they like the perpetual winter of Dino Valley or the perpetual autumn/fall of Goldenhills Valley, or is it strange to them? Do they prefer one over the other, or neither?

She likes them both, but she’s curious about what they’d look like if the seasons did change.

Andrew stepped out of the shower and dried off, before wrapping his towel around his waist and heading to his bedroom. He perused his closet, deciding on what to wear before shaking his head at himself. Neil was coming over for dinner - Andrew was going to show off his skills in the kitchen - for their sixth date. It was the highest number of dates that Andrew had ever had with the same person, but he felt that something was off. For their previous date, he’d worn his traditional ‘gettin’ laid’ outfit. Neil had sent his arms a few appreciative glances but hadn’t given Andrew the looks of lust that he was expecting. He was pretty sure that after knowing each other for months and going on five official dates they should have been at the blow job stage. Hand jobs at the minimum, but Neil’s desire seemed to be lacking.

Andrew wondered if maybe Neil wasn’t as attracted to him as he had said. They’d kissed multiple times and he’d seemed to enjoy that, but maybe he just felt pressured to do so when Andrew had pointed out that they were on a date. The thought of forcing Neil to do something he didn’t really want to made Andrew feel queasy and he knew he’d have to clear it up tonight.

Neil arrived a few minutes late and handed Andrew a crushed bouquet of flowers with a sheepish grin (”I’ve never dated anyone before, but the internet suggested flowers,”) and then spent a good half hour complaining about people on public transit. The strangers drawing today’s ire were a couple who couldn’t seem to keep their hands off each other and generally engaged in too much PDA for Neil’s liking.

“I don’t get it,” he huffed. “How hard can it be to just wait until they’re in private? How can they possibly need to kiss right then?”

“While I agree with you, haven’t you ever lost some rationality because of lust?” asked Andrew. He could think of a few times that his need for privacy had been challenged by the need to get off as soon as possible.

“No?” said Neil. “I don’t understand why everybody can’t just hold it.”

“Hold it?”

“Yeah, like...” Neil paused thoughtfully. “Oh! I know. When you really have to pee, but you’re not near a washroom. You hold it.”

“Huh,” said Andrew. “What about when you’re really attracted to someone? You’ve never had to urge to just act on it immediately?”

“No,” said Neil looking surprised. “Have you?”

“Yes,” replied Andrew. “But I have very good self-control.”

“I’ve... I’ve had crushes before,” said Neil slowly. “But there’s never any immediacy.”

“Did you fantasize about them? Your crushes?”

Neil blushed a little. “Well, yeah,” he said. “Like kissing and being close to them.”

“But not sex?”

Neil was perplexed. “I didn’t know them, not really,” he insisted. “Wouldn’t it just be really awkward?”

Andrew had a realization then, a few different things that Neil had said in the past slotting into place. When he’d been coming to grips with being gay he’d read a lot of literature about the effects of trauma on sexuality, and he’d come across descriptions of trauma-induced hypersexuality and asexuality. That had been the first time he’d heard those terms.

At college he’d had a... friend was too strong a word... acquaintance who was in his degree program and who always partnered up with him whenever group projects were required. Her reasoning had always been that he was the only guy who had never checked out her boobs. She was asexual, she told him, and not interested in having sex with anybody, no matter how friendly and attractive she was to them. She never wanted to hear the word ‘friendzone’ again. Some of the things that Neil had just said reminded Andrew of her.

“Neil, are you ace?” he asked,

“Am I what?

“Ace,” repeated Andrew. “Asexual.”

“I know what that word means with respect to plants, but not when applied to humans,” replied Neil.

Andrew huffed and dug out his laptop from under his coffee table. He opened it, did some googling, and handed it over. “Read this while I go make dinner,” he said.

He had prepared most things ahead of time, so he popped the lasagna into the oven to heat up and finished chopping the vegetables for the salad. He heard a small “Oh,” sound from where he’d left Neil.

When he walked back over to the couch, Neil looked up at him. “So,” said Neil.

“So,” echoed Andrew. “Did that help?”

“I think so?” said Neil. “I’m not too fussed about it, really. This whole thing between us has been new for me, so I’m just rolling with what feels right. It’s not like I even knew that I was capable of being attracted to guys until you came along.” He paused and looked up at Andrew. “Does the fact that I’m probably somewhere on the ace-spectrum mean you don’t want to date me anymore?”

“I don’t know,” said Andrew honestly. “I want to have sex with you eventually.”

Neil’s ears turned red. “Ummm... well, I’m not 100% sure that I don’t want to have sex. We can try.”

“We’re not doing anything until you’re 100% sure you want to,” said Andrew harshly. “I’m never going to pressure you into anything, and I won’t let you let me by being passive.”

Neil met his eyes. “I like kissing you,” he said seriously. “In the past, I’ve always found kissing to be anticlimactic and not worth the effort. I told you before that I’ve never felt this way about anyone else, and that wasn’t a lie. You make me feel safe and comfortable. I want to see where this goes between us, but if you don’t want to we can stop right now.”

Andrew thought briefly about ending what they had and was surprised by how his brain immediately shied away from the thought. “I don’t want to stop,” he said.

“Okay,” said Neil. “Then we’ll figure it out as we go.”

author’s note: I TOLD YALL THIS WAS COMING I’M NOT EVEN SORRY btw this is part one because i figured out i’d split it into at least two so. also if you don’t know a thing about avatar: the last airbender, just think about it like this: there were four nations, each of them represented one element and some citizens (benders) of those nations had the ability to bend (manipulate, or, in case of fire, even create) that element. in the original avatar universe, after a 100 year war, initiated and lost by the fire nation, all of them are now mixed up and live in harmony, although they have different cultures and all that jazz, but this is a little different. it’s as if something happened and made the four nations live together and evolve into the world we have today, except with the cultural differences and bENDING. enjoy!;

You sighed as you let your bag fall on your desk and sat down. The precinct slowly began to fill up with cops, chatter and phones ringing, and you turned on your computer and grabbed the case file from the case you were currently working. On the other side of your desk, Charles' chair made a puff noise when he settled down.

"Hey, Y/N, have you solved the Fire Jewels Theft yet?" He asked in a friendly tone, but you still sighed and frowned slightly.

You had been working thaut case for over a month now. Some relic jewelry from the Fire people, that belonged to a well-known firebender and supposedly dated from when the Sun Warriors were the main firebenders, had been stolen, and you were the officer assigned to figure out who did it. Whenever you got a new lead and thought you found a pattern, however, a new theft happened to another fire family, and you were back to the drawing board.

"No, not yet." You admitted, and he pursed his lips in sympathy. "I have a lead though. There will be an exclusive fire-culture event tonight and there’s chatter on the streets that says that the thief will be there.”

"Except you can't go in, Y/N." A third voice said, and both of you looked right to see Jake Peralta had just arrived. As per usual, he had a cocky smirk on his face. "Like you said, it's a fire-culture exclusive event. An earthbender like you won't get in without blowing your cover, it's like you have earth written all over your skin."

You rolled your eyes. Jake had been pressing you to let him help with the case since he found out about it. You knew that he was a firebender, but he never seemed to care too much about the fire culture. You'd overheard him and Gina talking about his family a couple of times, and you actually thought they were all airbenders except for him. You just didn't know why he cared so much about this case, and you wouldn't let him help unless he told you.

"Jake does have a point, Y/N." Charles reinforced, to what Jake raised his eyebrows. He gestured at your green and brown clothing (ref). "Not that that's bad, but anyone in the precinct could tell you were raised by earth people."

"As if you were any better, Boyle." You shot back, referring to his beige and green outfit and complete lack of shoes. He threw his hands up.

"I plead guilty, but I'm not the one who needs to sneak into a fire culture party."

Jake smirked when you rolled your eyes again, turning around and walking back to his chair. "Face it, Y/N. You need me on the case. I can teach you how to dress and behave like a fire person, and, if they doubt anything, I can pull some fire or lightningbending. I'm your best option."

"I think you meant last option." You told him, smiling mockingly. "I can behave and dress like a fire person on my own, and, if I can't, Holt will help me. Not all fire people are firebenders, so I won't need that, and weren't you raised in an airbending family anyways?"

Jake's smile faltered for a millisecond, but, before you could even think about it, he opened his mouth for a witty comeback. As the words began to leave his mouth, however, Captain Holt entered the bullpen and called the two of you. "Peralta, L/N! My office, immediately."

Jake mouthed 'I told you so' to you, but you chose to ignore him and follow Holt instead. Once you were both inside his office and the door was closed, he asked both of you to have a seat. You did, analyzing the small LGBT flag by his desk before he started talking. "So, you might remember that I agreed with you, L/N, about how Peralta was not professional enough to deal with the Fire Jewels Theft, right?"

"Most definitely do, Captain." You answered shortly.

"And you, Peralta, must remember how I reinforced that all of the times you came to ask me to be included in the case, right?"

"Clear as day." Jake said with his usual humorous undertone.

"And, as it turns out, there is a fire culture exclusive event tonight." Holt said, and you cringed, predicting his next words. "Now, Y/N, I do not doubt your capacity to do this by yourself. I am actually pretty sure you could pass as a fire raised woman if it was what you wished. However, Peralta is a firebender, which would make your cover stronger, and with all his recent research into the fire culture, I think he could be a real asset to the operation."

Despite being pissed by having to include Peralta, that was not what drew the most attention on what Holt had just said. Jake had been learning more about the fire culture? But why? And how didn't you know about it? You looked at him and realized he wasn't celebrating being included, but rather pressing his nose bridge and sighing – you weren't supposed to know. Probably no one was.

"Is this really necessary, Captain?" You inquired. "I really can handle it. I also think Detective Peralta has other reasons to be interested in this case and he refuses to tell me, and that might compromise the operation."

Holt, however, nodded firmly. "Jacob will be... Fine, Y/N. The two of you can take the day to work on the case, figure out your strategy and covers and preferably solve your personal problems like grown ups before going to the event tonight. Gina has your tickets. Don't ruin it. Dismissed.”

As soon as the Captain stopped speaking, Jake got up from his chair and left the room in silence. You followed him back to his desk, where he sat down and sighed. You landed on his spare chair, observing him carefully. After a couple moments of silence, you cleared your throat. “Jake, why have you been studying fire culture?”

Jake struggled for a few seconds before answering. “If I tell you it’s no biggie, will you be convinced?”

“Absolutely not.” You replied quickly, and he sighed again, bending over the table so his face was closer to yours.

“Alright, fine.” He said, and you realized he was measuring his words carefully. “You were right about my family. My mom, Nana and everyone else in it are air people, airbenders actually. My dad is a firebender, and that’s why I am one. But he left us when I was seven, and I never knew nothing about the fire culture. Or firebending. Actually, I was pretty suckish at it until Holt became our Captain. He showed me how to use my gift and how firebending isn’t only chaos and destruction as I thought.”

“So you wanted to learn more about the fire culture.” You completed him, starting to catch up. Jake reclined against his chair, shrugging. You felt your conscience weighing on you. “Jake, that’s actually really sweet.”

“Yeah, whatever.” He replied and you realized his little moment of emotional vulnerability was over. Great. “Please don’t start telling people about it. I don’t want the squad to think – ”

“To think that you actually have emotions?” You questioned rather ironically, but Jake smirked slightly.

“Emotions? I don’t know what that is. Can I eat it for lunch?” He inquired playfully, and you smiled.

“And he’s back.”

"Duty calls." He smiled knowingly at you and you chuckled at him.

"Damn right it does."

"No, seriously, we have to work. We need all information on this case and on this nights event as soon as possible."

"Oh. Right." You said, blinking. "It's all on my desk. Come on, lets do this."

Hours later, you found yourself late to the party you and Jake were supposed to go undercover. He was supposed to pick you up at your apartment, and, surprisingly, he seemed to be on time, but you spent longer than you predicted trying to get the little golden hairpin right. God, how did fire people do it? Why couldn't everyone just use normal hairpieces that attached properly to one's head, like earth people did? Fire people were just insane.

That said, when the bell rung, you were still in your PJs, the dress being the only thing missing to your cover. You heard Amy, who you lived with since the Academy, rushing to the door, and, then, back into your room. She put her head into your bathroom to see you. "Y/N, Jake's already here."

You cursed under your breath. "I'm a little late... Tell him to come in and wait in my room?"

"He's also dressed ridiculously."

"It's for the operation. Just let him in?"

"Are we really letting Jacob Peralta into our apartment?"

"Amy!"

"Fine! Just be quick."

"I owe you!" You said as she closed your bathroom door and left. You grabbed the fire culture-looking dress (ref) you'd rented from a shop, under the excuse of being a cop, and put it on. Although you thought it was too much, it was actually a pretty dress. The red and golden details looked good, and it fit you really well. You took one last look in the mirror before walking out.

"So?" You said, drawing Jake's attention from your bedside portraits. He was wearing what looked like sort of a burgundy blazer with golden details (ref), black pants and his old good fire culture pointy shoes; and you had to admit he was one of the few people that could pull that outfit off and still look ridiculously good in it. "Fire culture enough?"

Jake held back laughter. "Ok, don't get me wrong." He said defensively. "You look good. You really do. It's just... That is a fire culture wedding dress."

You blushed. So your research wasn't thorough enough. "Why the heck do you guys wed in red? White is the best color for wedding dresses!"

"White is the color for grief in the – “ Jake started, but stopped when he saw your cold glare. “Hey, don't look at me! Air people don't even have a fancy ceremony like you all do!" He defended himself, but then smiled, grabbing a bag he seemed to have left on your bed and handing it to you. "But not to worry – I brought a backup plan."

You opened the bag to see shiny red fabric in it. "How...?"

"Captain's sister, Debby. He knew you'd mess up." Jake said, and you rolled your eyes. "Now go put that on! We don't exactly have all night!"

You rushed back into the bathroom, untying all the knots and taking the bridal dress off. Without paying too much attention to it – you were late to a very important operation, after all –, you grabbed the new dress (ref) from inside the bag and put it on, zipping it up on your lower back and regulating the knot upper. There was also a necklace, red jewels with golden details, and you tried to put it on, fumbling a little before giving up. You shot the door open. “Hey, Jake, can you come in here and help me with the necklace?”

“Sure thing, Y/N!” He said, and you checked your hair, putting a couple of pins back in place as his footsteps approached. When Jake entered the small bathroom and looked at your reflection, his jaw dropped. He had never seen you in red before, as you were raised by earth people, but, damn, that was a waste. The color looked great on you, and the fabric seemed to hug all of your features perfectly. It was as if the dress had been made especially for you. The burgundy lipstick you were wearing and how your hair gracefully adorned your face didn’t help either – Jake had never felt so attracted to you, and he had to admit he did feel attracted to you most of the time. Eventually, you felt his stare, and he cleared his throat. “Wow. You look just like my – just like a fire person. The dress fits you really well.”

You blushed a little. “Thanks. I didn’t think it’d fit, me and Debby have different shapes.”

Jake looked away, seeming eager to change subjects. “So you can take down bad guys but not put a necklace back on?”

You rolled your eyes. “Just help me already, you asshole.”

He stood right behind you, fumbling for a second with the strings before successfully attaching them to one another. You were surprised by how warm his hands were – but then, he was a firebender. “There.” Jake said, taking a step back when he was done.

“Thanks again.” You smiled, touching it as though you doubted it was really done for a second. Then, you reached for your gun, which you left over the sink – it had been hidden in the bridal desk – and put it in your hand purse. “Now, lets catch some bad guys.”

“That was badass.” He admitted, nodded. “But it would have been way better if you had said it anywhere but inside your bathroom.”

“Shut up, Peralta.”

Reacting to Sweet/Vicious

Part I: Remember Fondly When 4th Meals Were a Thing and Breakfast at Night Reigned Supreme

The Setup: It started, as much does, with a tweet. That tweet was followed, as many are, by regret. Fortunately, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is a generous sort.

Robinson’s glorious but short-lived vigilante dramedy Sweet/Vicious was always on the list of candidates for an all-hands Reaction -- Miri started watching a day or two after Kris did, back in the fall, so Liz and Marchae added it to their (lengthy) to-watch lists -- but we didn’t put a timetable on it until our loyal reader @crazyhannibalthedaisiesslayer suggested it.

In this post (and its continuation, on Friday), we cover the first three episodes: “The Blueprint,” “The Writing’s on the Wall,” and “Sucker,” and many thoughts and feelings about campus sexual violence and related topics.

LIZ: First thing: I only had time to watch the first 3 episodes, although I wish I’d been able to see more!

MARCHAE: I think because I used to work in student affairs and dealt with some of the scenarios so in that way it is weird to see a comedy/drama of this topic

LIZ: I am IN LOVE. I thought episode one was amazing and I am pretty much hooked. I am here for the message and the premise and i think every college campus needs these 2 ladies!

MARCHAE: however the characters are 100% engaging and you want them to win so hard...

I called my mom after episode one and was like should i feel bad for wanting to see the guys get beat up

LIZ: The way they show the victims of sexual assault and discuss their stories is just so real even though the show suspends our disbelief in other ways so much

MIRI: Marchae, I don’t think you should feel bad

How do you feel about how stylized it is? I love it, but I feel like it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea

LIZ: Rapists who are getting away with it 100% and ruining their victims lives? no I would not feel bad

KRIS: When I first saw trailers for it (while my old roommates watched MTV reality shows) I was like oh, man, I don’t know, this seems like it might be trashy and exploitative

MARCHAE: I do agree Lizzie... it’s weird because my brain wants this to be a straight drama

yet i am oddly satisfied with the moments of comedic relief

LIZ: I didn’t think the stylization was OVER THE TOP

MIRI: Yeah, it’s a hard show to sell but SO GOOD

LIZ: theres a lot of comedy

Lemon as the one of us with the most first-hand sorority expertise what’s your general sense of the Zeta dynamic?

LIZ: I identify with the sorority characters who are actually smarter and much more .. defined as human beings than most would give them credit for or that they initially come off as

KRIS: (Harris gets crystallized so instantly with the line “I’m not saying I have sexual dreams about Ruth Bader Ginsberg... but I’m also not saying I don’t”)

LIZ: I mean.. I had several (male) friends and family members say to me when I joined my very small.. one of a kind local sorority.. “oh so you’re a sorostitute?”

MIRI: SUCH A LINE

LIZ: Yes i have a note about the RBG line

MIRI: UM that’s horrible and fuck them

LIZ: right, but that kind of mentality and characterization of college aged women who are friends with other women in the form of a sorority is so widespread

MIRI: The pilot honestly does SO much to characterize Jules, Ophelia, and Harris so quickly

KRIS: I do really like how they initially lean into the less generous expectations about sororities and then flesh out I think all of those characters in great ways

Mackenzie was a sleeper favorite for me

LIZ: this gives them facets.. like fuck what you thought about me and also.. I don’t have to not like to do my makeup or sometimes dress up for me to be a smart or valid female.

MIRI: I feel like Kennedy takes a little longer, but not in a bad way

Liz, you are amazing and I love you

LIZ: i don’t know many shows that give girls that kind of credit.. very legally blonde of this show..except Elle Woods was the exception there

MARCHAE: They have to save Kennedy (I say this not Having seen more than 4 epi)

LIZ: Visually, I am impressed with the shows set designs, makeup, and wardrobe

MARCHAE: I feel like they have to hold her close because of nick and Jules

KRIS: I LOVE the world-building, especially on what I assume is a pretty small budget

MIRI: I do love her moment when Ophelia tells her she has a very calming presence and she’s just like “I know"

LIZ: ITS EXPENSIVE

oh as far as this show is concerned

MIRI: yes, world building

LIZ: Jules and Ophelia (yes to the names btw)

have such amazing looks and their hair is bouncy like they are comic book drawings, but their makeup isn’t like that (bc that would be fucking bizarre) and I love how the fresh rosy-cheeked and bright eyed look of Jules is enhanced with her makeup and Ophelia’s brows and eye makeup are dark and defined/ grungy at times, but she is also kind of sweet because they don’t cake her up or give her a heavy lip.. idk if that makes sense to anyone else

their eyes are so expressive as actresses

and then they’re important because of the ninja outfits

MIRI: That all makes sense to me and I would never have thought of it at all

KRIS: it is right on the edge of my comprehension

MIRI: Sidebar: SUPER excited for you to see more Orphan Black and discuss that makeup

LIZ: but I am pleased with the fine line between real world and cartoonish that the MUA on this show kind of stride beautifully to give them unique looks that foil one another and bring out their strengths and sometimes their faults

KRIS: Ophelia I think I understand best in this context

MARCHAE: YESS LIZ!!!

LIZ: It is more subtle with Jules, because she is made to look more fresh, but I mean everyone on any show has lots of makeup on

MARCHAE: I wanted to chime in about wardrobe because it’s super similar to the way in which makeup is handled... and you definitely know who these people are and the kind of persons that this show is trying to share

LIZ: oh yes, the wardrobe feels almost theater like to me.. do you agree or am i wrong

MARCHAE: ( It was touch and go for a moment but me and my thumbs are finally #winning on the computer... I couldn’t take the tiny keyboard anymore)

MIRI: I never really notice Ophelia’s wardrobe that much, but the props they have for her are iconic and say so much

MARCHAE: I think it does... the show feels VERY comicbook-esq like I mentioned it reminds me very much in aesthetics to deadly class and there is another comic that focuses on a high school that I’m blanking on

LIZ: was this ever a graphic novel or comic book?

MARCHAE: but you get a lot in terms of wardrobe via colors that they use for these characters... Ophelia is almost always in darks, Jules in pinks and pastels

I quick checked and didn’t see it

KRIS: it was original to Jenn Kaytin Robinson

I mean she did a shit ton of research, and the producers watched The Hunting Ground and stuff

LIZ: nice..and yes I agree with the colors

MARCHAE: But these choices are interesting because they are almost opposite to the characters we meet in the show

LIZ: and the fact that Jules keeps her identity even as a vigilante with her pink backpack

MARCHAE: so Jules we meet as the original vigilante and she’s the one in the brightest colors ALWAYS in the show

LIZ: and then Ophelia has that car!

MARCHAE: that backpack is definitely our hint

MIRI: Because she’s trying SO hard to still be that girl

KRIS: Oh that’s so interesting. Jules is super dark and “damaged” and Ophelia’s ultimately a sweetheart.

MARCHAE: and Ophelia is always in darks

LIZ: right!?

MARCHAE: **taps nose at kris**

MIRI: I like that even when they put Jules in the Spitters are Quitters shirt, it’s light colored

MARCHAE: so its totally the opposite of what we see

in terms of how they are portrayed in their “normal life”

any who enough of my rant

LIZ: I find Ophelia to be much more innocent.. not because of being sexually assaulted, but because she is kind of playing catch up and barfs when she kills a guy and Jules obviously took this mission upon herself to become a kick ass fighter and to start doing something

MARCHAE: liz i absolutely agree

ophelia definitely the more innocent seeming of the two

MIRI: Yeah, Ophelia thinks of herself as So Hardcore but is basically a sweet 19 yr old with some abandonment issues

KRIS: Without spoiling anything I’ll say they’re generally really good about chickens coming home to roost

MARCHAE: so question... what institution do they go to where there is an assult like every freaking second

LIZ: they are all different and some are even charming (most are) and they have different personalities and hobbies.. like Nate is acting like a really good boyfriend to Kennedy so if we didn’t know what he’s capable of, we’d forgive his jerk reaction to her missing his football thing bc of his super sweet apology

MIRI: Well, it’s Darlington University, right?

KRIS: Well A) that doesn’t actually strike me as unrealistic but B) I got the sense of a “backlog” of assaults -- they’re using that wall, which was started who knows how long ago

MIRI: So it’s at least big enough to have masters programs

KRIS: not responding to like the student weekly or something

LIZ: i mean i know so many people in so many schools (large, small, medium and very small) who all have sexual assault stories

MIRI: So when we got this question I was like “huh, are people seeing that?

Outside of shipping her and Jules?”

MARCHAE: but we also know that Ophelia doesn’t have friends

MIRI: But upon rewatch it’s pretty solidly set up

MARCHAE: so before the question i suspected that she was just kind of enjoying her new friendship with this person

MARCHAE: i think it makes her so relatable too and you fall in love with her

MARCHAE: (mostly only on SUNDAY AFTER MOPPING but WITH POPCORN)

LIZ: I know, she is the perfect.. not robin.. robin

MIRI: She hurts Harris so easily but would be devastated if she actually lost him

LIZ: yeah i love her apology scene to him

MARCHAE: but he loves her no matter what

MIRI: She thinks she’s beyond needing that sort of connection because she can’t have it with her mom

LIZ: just a girl standing in front of a boy.. asking for her job back

KRIS: Yes her bad-friend-ness is great

MARCHAE: *snap snap snaps fingrs*

MIRI: But she’s wrong

KRIS: Dammit Ophelia you know I can’t resist Notting Hill

MIRI: and she needs people so badly

Also she’s just hilarious and brilliant and I love her and Harris’s friendship so much

LIZ: her mom was so rude to her on the phone it made me sad especially because Jules doesn’t have a mom.. and I know those were really briefly introduced to me, but I’m sure those are important issues

MIRI: OH YOU JUST WAIT

On the subject of friendship, there are a ton of examples of girls being very affirmational to each other that really interest me

LIZ: I also love that Harris is.. presumably straight and is not afraid to love RBG or Notting Hill

KRIS: I’m so jealous you’re experiencing this show for the first time

MIRI: Because sometimes they’re played for laughs

But not most of the time

and I love that

MARCHAE: YES!

MIRI: Like, the high girls just need to hug!

LIZ: I wanted to be in the back seat of their car screaming along to Defying Gravity

MIRI: And sometimes Kennedy is a bit ridiculous with her goddess stuff

MARCHAE: i love your love for defying gravity liz

MIRI: But for the most part it is 100% genuine

MARCHAE: Kennedy is the most

MIRI: And so what I do with my friends

LIZ: yeah kennedy suggesting that shit to ophelia was HILARIOUS

basically like “HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO GOOP.COM?”

MIRI: kennedy is indeed the most

MARCHAE: I am so CURIOUS about what happens when Jules tells her

KRIS: That shot where I assume Fiona and Gabby are on a dolly when they enter Vinylton high on shrooms is perfect

MIRI: So I love that there’s drunk girl in the bathroom type compliments and Woke Freshman type compliments AND really genuine support for each other

KRIS: sorry I was just slow there

LIZ: i think that kennedy will eventually (i mean who knows since it is cancelled) be an ally and join the cause or at least be supportive in a protective way

MIRI: OH JUST WAIT

MARCHAE: if she does I may ink myself!!!

KRIS: I repeat, I am so jealous you’re experiencing this show for the first time

MIRI: It’s a very well plotted season and that is all I will say
