Day 4: Reunion

Small footsteps stamped through the halls nearby. Darius let out a sigh of annoyance. The Titan below really wasn’t content to let him wallow alone. No, the knife had to be dug in further.

“Hey, Darius!” Hunter said, his voice akin to a factory whistle. “The hems in my cloak came out.” He smiled as he showed Darius the broken threads hanging from the bottom. As if the clean cut through them wasn’t obvious.

“Well,” he said neutrally as he walked away. “You know where the royal tailor is.”

Hunter followed, falling into step with him. Darius knew shaking him off wouldn’t have been that easy.

“I was thinking you could do it.” Hunter said as he fidgeted with his gloves, his cloak having been dropped and trailing behind him. “You know, like last time.”

Ah, yes, last time. It was probably in poor taste to mention last time had ended with Belos branding him and giving him a nasty slash across his cheek. Darius stole a glance at where it was now scarring and would probably remain there for the rest of the boy’s life.

“Maybe you don’t know where the royal tailor is.” Darius said curtly, eyes straight ahead. “You seem to think that’s what I am, at least.”

Hunter flinched at the acidic comment. Darius kept on walking, pretending he didn’t notice. What he said might not have been called for, but did it really matter in regards to his end goal? If he wanted to keep the child safe and away from him, he may as well let the boy start hating him.

“But…” Hunter said, trailing off as he came to a halt.

Darius turned and saw Belos with his hand over Hunter’s shoulder.

“Hunter,” he said, his gaze never breaking from Darius. “You know better than to pester the Coven Heads.”

“Yes, Uncle.” Hunter said, his voice thick as he furiously blinked away any tears that may have formed.

Belos finally turned and steered Hunter in the other direction. “Come, child, there’s still much to be done today.”

Darius forced himself to stare at the wall as Hunter looked back before turning the corner. The wall and him had a debate and eventually agreed. He had to be cruel to be kind. Logically, there was no other way. Belos didn’t want Hunter hanging around him, that much was clear. And that kid infuriatingly didn’t seem to realize his uncle was a monster. If he didn’t want Hunter to end up like his predecessor, he had to keep him at arm’s length. Darius ignored the nagging feeling that he didn’t need to be vindictive to achieve this, because he wasn’t, not really. It was just one mean comment the kid had probably already forgotten about.

Darius toed a piece of gravel as he stoked the embers of the campfire. This is what he wanted, wasn’t it?

He sent Hunter away from him, away from the Head and to Bonesborough, in case things went sideways. It seemed so perfectly logical at the time. Keeping the kids away from the Head meant keeping them safe.

Brilliant idea that turned out to be. He nearly choked out Alador when found out he had been taking them directly to the Head. Alador was only still alive because Raine curtly reminding Darius that he and the kids were only going after Eda's own kid. While Darius shut his mouth, he still silently seethed. He never could accept that sometimes bad things just happened, he always had to find someone to blame.

Always wanted someone to blame. Hunter probably would've been able to attest to that. Darius had long since given up trying to convince himself he was being cruel to be kind all those years. Cracks in that theory became all to clear that night they tried to enter Belos' mind, and after the Day of Unity it all came tumbling down like the debris that may very well have buried their children.

Some of the parents still believed the kids had made it out somehow. Eda pointed out her portal door was there. But Darius was ever the pessimist. If he believed Hunter was dead and it was all his fault, it wouldn't hurt as much if it turned out to be true.

Even so, it's not as if he didn't yearn. On this, like almost every other night, he looked to the stars and silently prayed.

Darius was out of breath by the time he ran back to the base. Even so, he still looked around frantically, nearly shoving Alador as he hugged his daughter.

They were back. He almost couldn't let himself believe it, but here they were.

As he scanned the room, he saw him. Hunter, hanging by the corner and passively looking on, with some much shorter hair and outfit that reminded Darius he needed to teach the boy how to dress himself.

He saw Darius and waved awkwardly.

Darius wrapped his arms around him, hoping he would never have to let go again.

Dadrius Week Day 5: Uncle Eberwolf

“You’re lucky today,” Eberwolf signed, “Tomorrow? I would have been taking ratworms out of town. Should have called. I almost didn’t see the scroll.”

“Yes, because I CLEARLY have ready access to a raven phone at the moment.”

Eber gave Darius a ‘really?’ face. “Your parents live down the street.”

“That is the problem, isn’t it? Can we just leave? I’m surprised Jasmin hasn’t already sniffed us out.”

Eber shrugged, backing up and yowling his species’ equivalent of ‘beep, beep, beep.’ He drew a circle, and two ratworms, one a usual greyish color and the other a rarer bright red, slithered out, curling around him. “One for Hunter. One for you.” Eber sniffed Hunter’s injured hand. “To the healer?”

“No,” Hunter answered, “Just home.”

Eber raised one eyebrow, but didn’t comment, just hopped onto Darius’ shoulder and leaned forward until Darius sat on the red ratworm, wrinkling his nose at the creature’s grimy surface. He knew they liked to wallow and dig, but really. Did Eber ever bathe them? Maybe that was where he was taking them tomorrow, although Darius sort of doubted it.

The moment Hunter climbed onto his ratworm (carefully moving the cape he still wore so that it didn’t touch the animal, Darius noted with some small amount of pride) Eber yipped, and the two worms took off, expertly bobbing and weaving through the streets. An abomination warp certainly would have been much faster, but the ratworms weren’t exactly slow, and they arrived at Darius’ house in minutes.

“Thank you, Eberwolf.” Hunter slid off of the ratworm and headed inside without another word, shoulders slumped. Darius watched him go, waiting until the blinds in Hunter’s room closed.

“I think I may have made a mistake,” he said in a rush to Eberwolf.

“You think?”

Darius twisted his gloves in his hands. “I didn’t give him enough warning. I let Jasmin of all people run off with him—”

“I like Jasmin.”

“Of course you do. But she’s a bit of a strong force for impressions, especially added on top of the stress of meeting my parents.” Darius pinched the bridge of his nose. “I pushed him too fast, and now I’ve scared him off. Something went wrong, he broke a glass, and it made him freeze up. I think I perhaps made it worse somehow when I tried to help? He got hurt, and he’s upset with me for taking him there—not that I blame him. I just… wanted to introduce him to my family. And now he’ll probably never want to go back.”

Eberwolf sniffed. “Sure about that?”

“Of course he won’t want to go back! The whole thing went sour from the beginning—Jasmin was right, I shouldn’t have expected to just show up and expect everything to be normal.”

Darius paced back and forth. “I should have patched things up with my family on my own before trying to drag Hunter into the mix. Things are still awkward between us, and adding a whole other person, especially one I’m also having an awkward time with… titan, he probably thinks they hate him and he was the problem. I was the one on trial; they probably already like him. Heaven knows my father was judging how I’m taking care of Hunter.” Darius pinched the bridge of his nose. “Which he… was probably proved right about. He got hurt on my watch—I’m supposed to be the adult in his life that protects him from injury, Eberwolf! No wonder he’s upset.”

Eber scratched his ear. “So tell him.”

“I’ve already told him it wasn’t his fault we left early, and he doesn’t seem to believe me. He’s…” Darius waved a hand in the air. “Catastrophizing.”

“And you’re not?”

“Well. It’s not catastrophizing if it’s true.”

Eber rolled his eyes. “I’ll tell him.”

“What? Eber, no, you’re—”

Eber scuttled halfway up the side of his wall, clawing his way out of Darius’ reach. “Too late!” He disappeared into an upstairs hall window. Despite his irritation and anxiety that Eber would aggravate the situation, Darius didn’t chase after him.

Maybe he’ll surprise me.

Hunter unwrapped his hand, hissing as the bandages stuck to the wound. Yeah. That was going to smart tomorrow. But the bleeding had stopped, and the wound had already started to clot, so with any luck, they’d at least be scabbed over by tomorrow.

The door to his room opened, and Eberwolf scampered in, sniffing at his wounds.

“It’s fine,” Hunter insisted, but he held his open palm out to the demon anyway. “What do you think, jelly?”

Eber nodded. “Keep flexible,” he signed. Hunter was still learning the demon’s language, but he understood enough that he didn’t need Darius to translate anymore.

Eberwolf’s nose crinkled. “Bad day?”

Hunter eyed him. “You’re not going to just report everything I say to Darius, are you?”

Eberwolf crossed his heart. “Won’t.”

Hunter sighed, gently sponging dried blood away from the wounds. “I screwed up. I broke a glass, I had a—a panic attack in the middle of his parents’ kitchen, and I don’t think they were too impressed with me to begin with.” He expertly unscrewed the lid off of a tube of antibiotic gel with one hand, squeezing the substance onto his open palm. “I just wanted to do something with Darius for father’s day, maybe just… I don’t know, take some sort of step out of ‘person who lives in his house.’ And instead, I made everything worse.”

Eberwolf snuffled, pawing at his nose.

Hunter sat down on his bed with a whump. “He tried to introduce me to his family, Eber! It was a big deal! But I messed up. And now he’ll probably never want to let me near them again. I—are you okay?”

The little demon had been rocking back and forth, scratching at his face, but now he fell over backwards, rolling around and howling with laughter.

Hunter jumped up, flushing. “This is serious! Stop—quit laughing at me, I don’t have the same advantage you do where I’ve been on good terms with Darius for years, I—I what is so funny?!”

Eber shook so hard he couldn’t sign properly. He wheezed out a couple barks and growls through laughs, then gave up. The little demon hopped back to his feet, coughing for air.

“Thinks he made mistake.”

“Oh,” Hunter said softly. The festering worry that he’d done something wrong yawned open wider inside his chest, seizing his lungs. Darius thought bringing Hunter had been a bad idea. He really had messed up. “Okay,” he managed, “Thanks for telling me how he… how he feels.”

“No.” Eber hesitated, started to sign something, then snatched up a pen and one of the brand new journals Camila had gifted him for his first school semester at Hexside.

You’renot the mistake.

Hunter stared at him, uncomprehending. Then, slowly, slowly: “Wait, if I’m not the mistake—what he thinks—”

“Overwhelmed you.”

“What? No, it was my fault, I broke the glass, I freaked out, why would he think—I mean, his abomination slithering around my feet didn’t help, but again, that’s on—it’s not Darius’ fault!”

Eberwolf heaved a long-suffering sigh. “Wants to take you back. Thinks you don’t want to go.”

“I do! I mean, maybe not today, but if he wants to—if they want to—if we can…” Hunter paced around his room. “Eber, you know him better. Does he want—does he think—am I just—”

“Finish sentence.”

“I…” Hunter struggled for words. Did he want answers to any of his questions? What if the answer was no? What if Darius was just letting him stay in the house, and the adoption papers were only a formality? Did Darius even plan on signing them?

But he’d wanted Hunter to meet his family—did he want them to be Hunter’s family, too? Jasmin had called herself his ‘Aunt Jasmin’—although that had sort of seemed like something she’d do without much prompting.

“What am I supposed to be?” he said finally.

Eber tilted his head. “Hunter.”

“No, I mean—am I his coworker? Friend? Ward? Ch-chi—” Hunter couldn’t finish the word.

“Supposed be Hunter. Whatever is.”

Hunter sighed, flopping backwards onto his bed. “It was almost easier when he hated me. At least I knew what he expected.”

“Easier. Not better.”

“No. Not better,” Hunter agreed. He’d only gotten Darius’ respect recently, sure, but now that he had it, he never wanted to lose it. Whatever happened, whatever he and Darius ended up being, he didn’t want to go back to how it had been.

“You want…?”

“I don’t know.” Hunter rubbed his arms. “I don’t know what I want. I don’t know if I’m ready for—for—” He shuddered, remembering the cold, slithering feel of Darius’ abomination. It didn’t usually bother him; neither did Amity’s. But this time… “It was easier with Camila.”

Not that he’d put a label on what Camila was to him, either. But somehow, the stagnant unsureness was more comfortable with her. Simply a quiet state of being, rather than this volatile, dangerous thing that felt like the ground beneath Hunter was moving and swaying and could possibly explode at any moment. His hand went to his belt pouch, resting on top of the card inside.

“I don’t know,” he repeated.

Eberwolf shrugged. “Darius doesn’t either.” He patted Hunter’s arm. “Not fault.”

The demon stretched, then headed out the door, disappearing into the hallway. Hunter heard a scratching sound on the outside wall, and then nothing. He stared up at the ceiling, absentmindedly flexing and relaxing his injured hand.

If Darius doesn’t know what he wants, how am I supposed to figure out where I fit in here?

Am I just supposed to… figure out what I want and hope it lines up with whatever he figures out?

What if it doesn’t?

Darius wouldn’t kick him out, he was sure of that much, but still. There were dozens of ways his situation could go badly that didn’t involve displacement. He could list at least five off the top of his head.

They couldn’t stay in this awkward stalemate forever. He knew that.

But still. Thinking about what might happen when they left… Hunter would rather grab another handful of glass.

Is Hunter okay? Mom and Dad are asking, too.

Darius’ fingers hovered over the keyboard. The last set of text messages between he and Jasmin was another rejected dinner invitation from three years ago—and scrolling up, he could see that their last real conversation that weren’t short courtesy invites had been ten years ago.

I really did drop the ball on that one. No wonder she was upset.

What did he tell her?

He’s fine, he replied shortly (a lie, maybe, but what was he supposed to answer?), then added thank you for the concern. I’ll let him know you asked.

Three dots.

We saved some cake. If you two want to come back.

Darius read and reread the message over and over again. Another invitation. A second chance.

Before he could send a response, Eber barked a warning, and Darius jumped up as he scuttled back down the wall, suddenly nervous. If he hadn’t screwed up with Hunter irreversibly, they could make this work. His parents and Jasmin were willing to try again—if only Hunter was on board. “Well?” he demanded, “How’d it go?”

Eber preened, grooming himself. “How did what go?”

“Don’t do this to me, Eber.”

A dramatic sigh. “I am the only one keeping this family together.”

Darius fought back the urge to pick the demon up by the scruff of his neck and shake him until he got answers. Still, his hands twitched. “Eber.”

Eberwolf stretched, whistling for his ratworms. “Promised not to tell you what he said. But I will say, you need to figure out what he means to you. Or you’re going to lose him.”

I just think about Flapjack, Dadrius, Huntlow, and Gus-Hunter-bros so much

How each dynamic Hunter has with them parallels a previous Caleb's story, and how each dynamic is a perfect reason in Belos' eyes to kill Hunter for "betraying him", let alone the way all of them are happening at once.

Flapjack being the first ever source of unconditional support in Hunter's life, as well as a gateway to wild magic, something Hunter adores but isn't permitted to be around -- just like they were for Caleb centuries ago. Flapjack is scarred and was abandoned for a long time, likely all from the day Caleb was killed, and the person who inflicted this pain onto them is the same person who abused Hunter. Flapjack didn't bond with Hunter because he is made from Caleb, but because Hunter's motivations line up with Flapjack's, and they have (literally) pulled Hunter along helping him eventually build the other supports he's made.

Flapjack represents the beginning of the end for both Caleb and Hunter in Belos' eyes, evident by his outburst upon seeing them. The very representation of the dangers of magic, leading Caleb away from his brother all over again.

Darius being the same witch that the Previous Golden Guard was the mentor of and became attached to, probably as something like a little brother or son, then ended up dying to protect. From the trauma and grief of loss, Darius kept a distant and strained relationship with Hunter for years until recently after a moment of rare rebellion from Hunter -- something we now know every grimwalker before him has also done. Now it has come full circle with Darius as the adult developing a similar attachment to Hunter as something like a son to him, and almost dying during the draining spell after sending Hunter away to protect him.

Belos had to have known about the Previous Golden Guard's dedication to Darius, just as Belos knew Darius was a rebel when no one else suspected him. And now here he is, ruining another perfectly good Caleb not even two decades later.

Willow being a witch that Hunter, a non-witch, develops feelings of some kind for, who is brave and strong and always protecting her loved ones, including Hunter himself a number of times. Hunter, a Caleb clone, who loves wild magic and the people he's bonded with in the Boiling Isles, with Willow being the very first to be positive from the start. A perfect reflection to Caleb, the original Caleb from centuries ago, who willingly fell in love with the Boiling Isles and the people there and -- most importantly -- the witch he started a family with, who bravely tried to protect Caleb in his final moments.

The original sin of Caleb that got him killed in cold blood, grave robbed, and cloned for centuries afterwards was falling in love with the Boiling Isles and a witch. The ultimate betrayal, when Caleb chose this hell over his own brother.

Gus being a little brother to Hunter, who is sheltered and cared for and protected by this older brother figure. This isn't the first Caleb to be an older brother to someone, blood-related or not, in fact that's how this story all started. Caleb was Philip's doting older brother, who sheltered and cared for and protected him their entire childhoods through the horrors of their upbringing. But this time it's not one-sided, Gus has sheltered and cared for and protected Hunter back, he was the safe haven for Hunter to confide in after he ran away from his home, and he shared a healthy coping mechanism with Hunter for his anxiety.

Gus' brothership with Hunter is a series of kindnesses that Philip didn't grant to Caleb in the end. After everything they've been through, how could Caleb choose a witch as a brother over him?

Willow and Gus reflect the original Caleb's story, Darius was directly involved in the last grimwalker story, and Flapjack was directly involved in the original Caleb's story. And all of them are here now for Hunter.

It was inevitable Hunter was going to be the Grimwalker to finally break the chain, with having so many direct and indirect ties to his predecessors all lined up together in his favor through a combination of extreme luck, coincidence, and his own actions to change.

It's beautiful and poetic, really.

You know what? I quite enjoy Dadrius

I'll expand: although to many people Dadrius loses as a concept due to unpretty relationships inbetween him and Hunter in the past, I personally think that this is an interesting base to work from.

I have a few "takes" about various scenarios or dinamics explorations about this pair which I'm too nervous to release in fanfiction form (English is not my first language, and also writing long texts with wholesome culminations and stuff generally makes me anxious) - so I guess I can at least post them as ideas here on Tumblr.

Usually I'm more of "longread about RELATIONSHIPS and STORIES and CONFLICTS" person but even writing them in my native language would be draining - and I don't even enjoy how that would look because many termins in TOH are pun-related and/or difficult to okayishly translate from English - so instead I'll try some quick takes in relatively short sentences and will work up from there. Or maybe I'll immediatly dive into monstruously big sheets of texts while suffering from how awkwardly I frase them. Who knows.

I guess I just need to begin so I might find out.

Any Sport in a Storm is probably my favorite ToH episode and I couldn’t deny myself making a little doodle for it. I love how it highlights the intersection and similarities between Willow and Hunter’s development, as well as just being a solid episode on its own. We get Willow standing up to her former professor’s gross bias against her choosing to play to her strengths, poor Hunter being terrible at peer-aged social interaction, protective and supportive best friend Gus, more Viney and Puddles, an introduction to Dadrius (very important lol), and “Ice pack for Steve 👍”. And then Lumity having a little mini adventure chasing down, what I assume, was the answer to a decently large fandom theory. And then, of course, this marks the relatively gentle beginning of Hunter’s, I’m gonna call it, redemption and awakening arc before the poor kid gets his shit absolutely r o c k e d by Hollow Mind.

Also, for clarification, I don’t necessarily consider this the true beginning of Huntlow as a ship in my book. A lot like how I view Zutara from aatla, I don’t think Huntlow truly works as a ship until later. This definitely marks the beginning of their friendship, but I don’t think that necessarily evolved into anything more until probably while the Hexsquad were stuck in the human realm. Maaayybbeee there’s a bit in the time between Labyrinth Runners to Clouds on the Horizon, depending on how you wanna imagine that blank time between the Hexside Incident and the Day of Unity, but that leaks over into fanfic and fan theory territory.

I think dadrius fans are sleeping on the comedic potential of post-canon Hunter getting jealous over Darius giving nicknames to other kids.

Not Hunter's close friends of course, he would think that's funny and cool, but for example someone like Jerbo. Hunter gets back from a school break vacation in the Human Realm, and Jerbo had started helping with the sigil removal project and already got a nickname. And Hunter is super mad because Jerbo has anti-authoritarian tendencies + knows abomination magic = is Hunter being replaced by a better white boy? (that happens at the point post canon where Hunter wouldn't actually for real believe it, but he is still very much a passive-agressive teenager about it)

I think we're sleeping on the comedic potential because we're all too used to thinking about angst when it comes to literally any scenario lmao 😭 I'm blaming Hunter for this one, he just makes it too easy.

Honestly it's so funny because the way I picture Darius and Hunter's relationship post-canon is that Darius is such a whipped dad that while there's definitely a lot of teasing, as evidenced by that intense hair ruffle in the epilogue, and playfully snarky comments, he probably is far softer on Hunter than he is with literally anybody else, Eberwolf very much included because Darius is very much like Eda when it comes to expressing his affection. Raine can attest to that.

So he probably was like that during their sewing lessons at the castle as well, it's only once the adoption becomes official that he starts being more openly soft because he can afford to without blowing his rebel cover like before, and he has a very traumatized teenage boy in his hands who certainly could use the sincerity when it comes to him expressing his mushy parental feelings.

That's all well and good. Hunter loves being the exception to Darius' rule about how to show he cares. Being Darius' little prince who's absolutely getting a big, obnoxious cheek kiss with a loud "mwah" at least once a week because Darius likes teasing him in the corniest of ways but also does mean the affection.

It's good. It really is.

But then people like Jerbo come along and Hunter sees Darius teasing him with that playful snark that was so characteristic of him at the beginning of their bond and he's immediately grumpy and suspicious about it.

It's not like he has lost that, it's just that Darius is softer with him and it was never a problem until it is.

"Wow, Darius, how come you don't call me a little shit while smiling at me and payfully patting my back before we go our separate ways? Isn't it so interesting how that happens? 🙃". He's raging, he's seething, he's glaring at Jerbo whenever he sees him over Darius' shoulder because he's being hugged at this exact moment and poor Jerbo doesn't understand if Hunter thinks he did something to Darius or what's wrong with him. It's always problems with the Emerald Entrails, who's next? Gus???

Darius ends up finding out about it, of course, because Hunter is tragically bad at hiding his emotions, especially now that he doesn't have to keep up an act and it's been a while since he has to, and he finds it terribly amusing but of course he has to clarify that he doesn't plan on replacing Hunter. He's not too sure about calling Hunter a little shit though, but increasing the amount of playful teasing is something that can be arranged.

Hunter is probably a little ridiculous about it, he still wants to cuddle with Darius on the couch while shooting snippy remarks back and forth and that's a very valuable form of bonding to him. Darius is equally as ridiculous so it works out fine.

I've been thinking about it lately and I don't know how Hunter will react to Darius being a rebel. Raine at the very least has rebelled recently (idk if it's widely known tho) and they have a connection to the owl house/has been at least civil to Hunter in the past. (going off Hunter's palisman observations and what he said about Raine/how they reacted to him in ASIAS)

Darius on the other hand has a history of ignoring Hunter, and his attitude towards him in the beginning of ASIAS is not great, leaving Hunter like he has something to prove. The only positive interaction we see between Hunter and Darius is that bit at the end where Darius briefly praises him for making friends and basically says "I won't tell Belos if you won't". There's the implied sewing lesson, so maybe more than one positive interaction but we haven't been shown anything else between them. And I know how he reacted realizing hunter was also trapped in Belos's mind in HM, but we (the audience) and the other rebels know about it, and that's probably it.

Don't get me wrong I love Dadrius, but Hunter has not had any good relationships with adults for his entire life, until very recently. He thinks backstabbing is normal behavior for friends, he expects Darius to hit him with his scythe hand and just braces for it, and when Belos nearly cut him in Hunting Palisman he barely flinches out of the way. One or two safe/good interactions aren't going to do anything to dispell his wariness around adults, especially one who's been ignoring him or treating him as an inconvenience up until a couple weeks ago.

Hunter still did something and thought he would be punished and instead was praised, which yes is good, but he was mostly confused. Darius had been cold and dismissive to him until he apparently did something Darius approved of, who still went as far as to act like he was about to hurt him, before giving praise. Sure, Hunter probably went back to the castle and got a sewing lesson or two, but he's been raised to be on high alert and read between the lines.

Darius just started acting warmly towards Hunter, and that's probably at least a little suspicious, but in the "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" way. Finding out Darius is a rebel might make Hunter feel like the kindness was another manipulation or lie. Like he doesn't want to go back to Belos, obviously, but I can't see him warming up to Darius quickly, especially after that potential whiplash.

Dropping all my hunter headcanons because why not

-He definitely experiments a lot with his style. He especially loves human clothing, Luz takes him shopping frequently, he likes wearing skirts too, just really likes the different feel and freedom of them

-He also gets introduced to human tunes and keeps cranking up the volume, he has to be reminded to turn down the volume when listening with earbuds lest he give himself tinnitus aged 17 god bless

-as for who he listens to: everyone. Well i think he actually gets into hard rock/metal, Luz keeps making ‘male maniupulator music’ jokes that he does not understand At All. But then on another day he’ll be singing his heart out to some Twice like this boy contains multitudes

-is camila’s adopted son. Well in legal terms i think he actually gets taken in by both eda and darius. Like he goes to darius at weekends but instead of his parents being divorced its more like they’re the previous generation of theatre gays who still have high school beef but they also saved the world together so its a funny dynamic. Anyway thats just my hc as a dadrius liker but also hunter clawthrone truther. BUT THIS IS AB CAMILA back to camila.

-As i said camila does not Officially take him in, but he does visit her crazy often because he just likes being around her. Being in the human realm post kings tide was a tumultous time for him but the noceda home was where the process of his healing got to finally properly begin so he loves it. And camila was a huge part of that ofc. She thinks he is a lovely young man. Obviously she is also worried about him but she doesn’t have many probing conversations with hunter, like she knows his Deal and past abuse but they spend most their time together baking cookies and shit. He is definitely comfortable breaking down around her though

-Speaking of, cooking/baking is his main hobby he develops post kings tide, it started in the human realm ofc he is camila’s sous chef. But back in the BI he continued and he just. loves it. He reads cookbooks cover to cover like they’re novels and won’t even mark down any recipes he likes because he’s just too engrossed. And then with actual making, he prefers baking bc its very follow-instructions-and-get-correct-result and he has been doing that his whole life, cooking is Scarier bc its more flow and experimentation and artistic but he’s getting to grips with it. He proudly boasts about he’s the only person who can make both human and BI cuisine (Luz not applicable, she can only make instant ramen)

-The emerald entrails are his closest friends and he just loves LOVES hanging out with them all as a team, he loves their group hangouts and how chaotic they get, and ofc they all still play together! He’s also gotten pretty good at flyer derby and he is Not smug about it (he is so smug. But also he deserves it)

-You know how other witches have their palisman tucked away 90% of the time? Yeah not this white boy. Flapjack is just Constantly vibing on his shoulder, save for when he’s out and about in the human realm, bc he could get away with it but it just looks a Bit too unusual to have a bird perfectly content on his shoulder. But mostly Hunter relishes not having to hide Flapjack anymore. It’s huge for him. Sometimes he still feels scared, like Belos is going to come back and rip Flapjack away, but in those moments Flapjack will peck at his ear and remind him that they’re both safe

-(post hair noodle, hunter’s ear is the main Flapjack target)

-him and Amity got over their animosity pretty quickly but that does not deal with the other, greater obstacle: their mutual awkwardness. GOD BLESS THESE TWO IDIOTS THEY WERE TRYINF but they used to be so BAD at conversations. Literally just like ‘hey’ ‘hello’ ‘…’ ‘…’ ‘…nice weather isnt it’ AND SO ON. Luz was greatly entertained and she did nothing to help them. But they figured things out themselves. And once they get past their awkwardness… oh boy, say hello to trauma bonding! Obviously its not the only thing they talk about it but Hunter is comforted by knowing there is someone who really Gets it and vice versa. Sometimes he feels a bit bad going to Amity to vent because he’s like ‘what if she’s having a good day? What if she’s not thinking about the bad things that happened to her and then here I come dredging up everything-‘ but amity tells him it’s Ok. They get through most of their bad days together. And on their good days they almost murder each other over mariokart

-he is okay in the end and lives a good life full of healing and happiness AMEN

oh boy howdy i have been waiting to hear these words all my life

i promise you are not pestering me at all bdjfjdjfks i am frothing at the MOUTH at the opportunity to talk about this damn thing lol. this stupid playlist is my magnum opus my baby i have spent like 2 hours meticulously organizing it yes im normal why do you ask

the hunter playlist in question for everyone else

the playlist's structure is generally meant to follow hunter's growth as a person, starting from pre-canon childhood to the present, and is at times loosely based on the five stages of grief. (this "grief" being the revelation that his entire life has been a lie.) to split it into sections, the first 20 songs are meant to catalogue hunter's experience being raised by belos and rise to the position of the golden guard. 21-27 is his gradually expanding worldview through hunting palismen to any sport in a storm, after he meets flapjack and the hexsquad and starts slowly questioning his beliefs. 28-42 is hollow mind and the direct fallout of that—with 33-45 centering around the "anger" stage of grief—and 43-48 is his feelings between labyrinth runners and king's tide. 49-58 is firmly in the "depression" stage, with everything after 59 being when he reaches acceptance and is able to truly start to recover.

putting this under a cut because i swear it is longer than the damn bible, but below you will find a more in-depth song-by-song breakdown. never underestimate the power of a very exhausted college student who drank too much soda's ability to think about one particular fictional character ig.

to start, i put dear wormwood at the very beginning to act as a sort of "prologue" to the playlist and set the stage for what's to come, and also because it is THE Hunter Song(tm) and i need to make sure everyone knows it. that song has had a flashing neon sign with hunter’s name on it in my brain since eclipse lake at least.

bumblebees are out, because it's so short and blatantly "oh this is hunter and belos", acts as a clear divider between dear wormwood and the rest of the playlist, with fish in a birdcage being the official "start" to the narrative. this song and helplessness blues after it then act to sort of sum up hunter's general feelings growing up isolated in the coven.

english house through you're a useless child (君はできない子) is actually from belos's perspective indoctrinating him, and then love me love me love me (愛して愛して愛して) onward is back to hunter. the next several songs detail hunter's experience as the golden guard. life itself is a recent addition mostly just there for vibes and because the first verse fits lol (thanks skit) and honey i'm home and saint bernard are the two obligatory Religious Trauma Bops i hope to make animatics for eventually. icarus (Bird Symbolism #1) through stonewall stone fence is meant to be from the perspective of an outsider looking in (aka the audience) and going "oh this kid is Not Well" it is Necessary. (silhouettes particularly fucks me up lol i need to make a dadrius playlist)

with that all being said there beneath is where his character arc in the show proper actually kicks in. it acts as a divider between the prior songs to say "oh he is Thinking about Things." [insert that shot of him looking out his window at the end of hunting palismen] the songs from notos don't really fit in chronologically—torches would actually fit better earlier, and the other two later—but they flowed better here lol. bad blood is mostly vibes i don't even remember why it's in there, something something it being about god creating man paralleling belos creating the grimwalkers, but i like it too much to take it off lmao. this section is basically all of hunter's beliefs slowly slowly starting to crack throughout his Field Trips With The Good Guys.

uso janai is where shit gets Real; this one is actually from luz's perspective after half-befriending hunter in hunting palismen and then wanting to get him away from belos after You Know. escapism is back to hunter—more questioning, and the line "i'd rather be free" calling back to his desire to choose his own future—before shit goes down.

pale white horse and where is your rider happen specifically during the confrontation with belos in hollow mind. the actual songs are about uhhh,, an abuse victim being approached by the personification of death itself (when the other three horsemen failed to rattle them) and being scared shitless before realizing death had been their abuser disguised the entire time which fits with. well the last 5 minutes of the episode.

the next songs until around whisper encompass the time between hollow mind and labyrinth runners where hunter is alone to process things. the extra oh hellos songs there are him thinking back on his life and all the harm he'd caused working under belos as everything is recontextualized. (plus passerine has that extra bird symbolism fuck yeah)

(if you think there's a lot of the oh hellos in this beast oh my god. i think i had to physically restrain myself from adding like 70% of their entire discography at first im pretty sure the entirety of dear wormwood was on there for a little bit. it's all hunter. i am deranged.)

from this point onward starting with james picard, the playlist structure really kicks into the 5 stages of grief high gear, with everything before pale white horse generally being denial and these next several songs shifting into anger. this section until time to move on is what i like to call hunter's Religious Trauma Breakdown Arc where he's just thinking things through and gradually becoming angrier and angrier at the universe as it all sets in no im not projecting

(also i should note that the order from here on is a little fucky and songs are mostly chosen by what flows best sound-wise; if we're going just by lyrics it'd be something like where is your rider > the garden > dear god > let it burn > dream with everything else tacked on afterward)

sweet sacrifice specifically gives me mad "angry at your shitty parent for years of Nonsense" vibes no im not projecting and obsolete is. bro come on just listen to the lyrics. "you bring me back to life so you can watch me die" it's out of my hands at this point bsjfkfkd

the Our Last Night Trifecta is meant to be hunter's thoughts upon realizing he's effectively out of the coven after labyrinth runners. sunrise would actually fit better lower in the playlist but i wanted to keep them together in order for the flow bshfksk. lie to me is the Oh He Has Friends To Help Him Through This song and more than this stands as hunter and the hexsquad both vowing to protect each other from belos,, ,, oh he has friends to help him through this,,,,,, arsonist's lullaby is there to sort of say "you're not outta the woods yet kiddo" but it's also mostly there because. philip notably has a fire motif going on with him and im a huge slut for symbolism X)

starting with bird song, we have officially entered Hunter's Depression Era after king's tide. bird song is mostly there because Oops! All Bird Symbolism. the moon will sing grabbed me by the throat with Sad Boy Vibes it's sort of there as a retrospective "wow that whole thing was fucked up" on hunter's part, and unraveling is literally only there because the first verse reminded me of darius but it's got that post-hollow mind "shit ive lost literally everything" feel going for it so in it goes. lyrically these both fit better during the initial anger pain spiral (around where the garden is) but again, flow.

(note that ive barely touched this section moving forward since thanks to them so the songs here are a lot more vague, predictive Being Sad And Healing type shit; i will probably do an overhaul after season 3 is over and his canon character arc is actually complete. i havent added anything with the events of thanks to them in mind because i don't want to disrupt the flow i have, however i am actually planning to add who am i by cami-cat eventually; it gives off MASSIVE post-hollow mind hunter and luz vibes)

welcome home, son gives off a very specific emotion i cannot describe you're just gonna have to trust me on why it's there but let the river in is peak "lmao fuck my dad" energy he needs this . uneven odds is more vibes (+ camila going is anyone gonna parent this and not waiting for a response) but you understand right. He Needs This.

lost in paradise sort of represents a low point during the timeskip in thanks to them; that lingering feeling of "everything is (comparatively) fine now so why can't i be happy and feel like i deserve to be" that will no doubt be haunting him for years. glow is straight-up about grief and i put it there initially looking at it from a "healing from non death-related trauma" angle but after uh. You Know. i am seeing it differently,,,, kokoronashi + can i believe you build off of the thing i said about lost in paradise with that "why can't i feel like i deserve to be happy" thing plus my favorite, "feeling inherently unlovable what do you even see in me."

eight through soap is him clawing out of that mindset and deciding maybe kindness and trust is Good, Actually (said through tears). love like you is love like you and wanderer's lullaby is Me Specifically reaching into the screen and giving him a hug /j (it's actually his like 5 parental figures telling him they love him <3 i have a lot of feelings about this song okay) the author once again plays off hunter's desire to choose his own future with him finally being allowed to do so, and ready now is exactly what it says on the tin. that he's going to be okay.

finally, FINALLY, thus always to tyrants finishes things off with a bookend to dear wormwood. this song ends the dear wormwood album with the victim staying firm in their decision to leave their abuser with a hope that they become a better person someday; hunter is now on the road to recovery away from belos, closing up his character arc while still leaving the path ahead relatively open-ended. (i chose make this one last since it feels less "final" than the prior two songs—signaling that his journey is far from over—and, y'know, bookending.)

this is quite possibly the longest post i have ever written but!! thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about this abomination lol i worked. way too hard on it bhsgsdkh hope that answers your questions and lmk if you have any other thoughts!!! <3

Write your RPer Resolutions for 2024! (What are some goals for yourself as a writer? Improve descriptions? Plot with more members? Etc.)

STOP HOARDING REPLIES!! This is probably my greatest sin as a roleplayer. For some reason there is a worm in my head that is always like “if you can’t do it all at once don’t do it at all.” NO!!! I have to let myself be okay if replies are spaced out or if I only do a handful every day. I don’t know where this bad habit came from but I’m determined to at least try to break it in the new year.

Plot more!! It can be intimidating for me to reach out to others out of nowhere, even if I have ideas. And I have to let the fact that just because not every idea sticks doesn’t mean I shouldn’t continue to reach out in the future. I want to go through everyone’s questionnaire and resolutions and see what plots and connections I can fill in!

Events!! I want to participate more in Discord. It’s really easy for me to say “well, Darius wouldn’t be there”--PUT HIM IN THERE ANYWAY!! No rules, just roleplay!

Kudos!! I admire you all so much and need to express that more openly!

Diversify my portfolio!! We all know I’m picking up Bones, but in general I want to pick up characters that are a) wanted and b) expand who I am able to interact with. Get involved in groups like university, RAS, Muses, natives, etc.

Write at least one resolution, or “goal,” that you have as an RPer for your character(s)

Angel: Get involved, whether through MAFIA or Magick Grand Prix. More likely the former, but maybe her becoming more confident in her magick status will lead to the latter! I’m really enjoying this competitive sporty streak that’s come out and want to lean more into that.

Continue to build relationships! The biggest obstacle for Angel is that she doesn’t have connections, so she’s going to have to make them! It’s already beginning with Tanya and Mim but I want MORE!

Darius: Be Dadrius. He’s already started to wriggle his way into Uncle-ing the Weed Killers and I just think he should continue to do that. And outside of his specific Boiling Isles children, connect with other students as well! Be a mentor! Continue on Caleb’s memory!

But also, make adult friends! Put yourself out there! Be the messy bitch who lives for drama that I know you are!

Luisa: Make friends! Go on dates! Maybe, just MAYBE, be a little introspective and try to improve your life and situation! But probably not that one. She’s got to take the first steps by opening herself up to others, even if that just means making time to go out every once in a while.

Write at least one resolution IN CHARACTER for your characters. What do THEY want to accomplish or change in the New Year?

Angel: Find out more about her Dad so she can get out of this town (no). Raise the Lionesses to Champion status and/or join a winning team.

Darius: Figure out what’s going on with Hunter and Belos. Get a good grade in teaching, which is both normal to want and possible to achieve.

Luisa: Try to prevent a disaster BEFORE it happens! Learn more about Dungeons and Dragons (she has the Dropout subscription, after all)

List one or more characters you have never interacted with that you would like to do so

Sammy’s characters: I’M SORRY SAMMY!! I feel like we’re two ships who just keep passing each other in the night, and that is entirely on me. We WILL interact this year. I will make SURE OF IT!!

Merida: I just think she and Angel would be neat. They’re both looking for a family member (though for very different reasons) and I think would play off each other with their personalities.

San: More wolves! San and Angel on the Lionesses together! They have to know the other is a wolf but haven’t said anything yet. I just think it would be neat.

Wolf: I promise this isn’t going to be a list of just werewolves but Wolf is also a born wolf, which I think would be an interesting dynamic!

Shang: He and Angel are both looking for their Dads maybe they can help each other out with that. Idk I just want to interact with the pretty man.

Emira: Phineas is setting Angel up with Edric but I feel like she and Emira would vibe more.

Blights: By extension, Darius should just run into all the Blights more often.

Majke: We’ve already started discussing this but I just think she and Darius would be messy friends.

Maximus: This is another one of those “idk what to do but your face is so pretty and I love you”

Seamus: See the above. Am I shallow wanting to interact with face claims that I personally love lmao

Zero: I’m sorry I keep doing this but also he was one of my fcs when I first joined Swynlake! I think it would be great to come full circle!

Kim: We also started discussing this, but she and Luisa should be friends! I just think it would be neat for them to solve a crime together. Maybe some action scenes??

The Madrigals: This one might be a bit of a cop-out, but I’d love to explore the familial relationships that don’t get showcased in the movie! I still have many that I haven’t interacted with yet and I want to hit up everyone at least once by the end of the year

Toby: I have nothing for this, he just seems like a funny character and I want to interact with him

Talk a bit about your plotting style – what plots are you most drawn to? Do you prefer to come with a fully-formed idea and plot off that, or throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks?

Alright, I feel like I really dug a hole and exposed myself with the above list. Sometimes my plotting can literally just be vibes alone and throwing anything to the wall to see what sticks.

But that doesn’t mean I don’t like fully thought out plots and planned out dynamics! In fact, they are some of my favorites! While it is fun to just throw characters together and see what happens, it’s also just as fun to jump right into a relationship that’s been deeply established through headcanon alone. Giving characters a history and dynamic ahead of time means you can start getting to the fun stuff right away without having to do the “getting to know you” banter over and over again.

As for plots I’m drawn to, I love a mess. I love when characters feel things strongly, are in the wrong, and generally just mess things up. And I love playing all sides of the mess whether it’s the messy person, the person trying to fix it, the bystander, or whatever else. I just think there should be a healthy amount of conflict to keep a plot moving and to kickstart character growth.

Talk a bit about character relationships – what relationships are you most drawn to? How do you prefer to approach shipping (if at all!)? What, specifically, are you looking for right now for your character relationships?

I love family of all kinds! I love deep friendships. I love rivalries, especially one-sided ones where a character hates another for hardly justifiable reasons. I love messy exes. I love toxic relationships where they bring out the worst in each other. And yes, I do love a good romance.

While chemistry comes first, I am also capable of shipping based on vibes or tropes because generally, if you’re planning it out with someone ahead of time, you’re usually on the same page in terms of what you like/what you want to see/etc. Of course things can and will change! But I’ll admit some of my favorite ships have been ones that were plotted out, and some of my other favorites came completely organically. We have the range.

Plotting Exercise! Pick one of the resolutions/goals in #3 and plan a rough guideline to how you could accomplish it. Here’s an example.

ANGEL wants to get involved with Pride U sports despite not actually being a student.

ANGEL goes to EILONWY to ask about intramural football.

ANGEL finds DOC to get falsified doctor’s notes to play without revealing her Magick status.

TANYA finds out about this and has a fight with ANGEL about how they’re going to blow their cover.

OPEN PLOT CALL to anyone who would be able to suss out what is going on

Perhaps TOBY writes an expose on the werewolf, revealing her to the town

Prejudice and exposure pushes her deeper into MAFIA territory where she connects with KAREN to learn more

Alternatively, approached by CRUZ who offers Magick-friendly sports alternatives

2. Favorite episode of season 2?

Tbh S2 fucks so hard I'm not sure I can pick a favorite. I have to cheat by picking one for both the first half and second half of the season haha!

S2A might have to go to Knock Knock Knockin' on Hooty's Door, the amount of speed running plot development all thanks to Hooty my favorite weirdo, it was just insane. I remember when the episode first aired and how much it made my brain boil from what it revealed about Eda's backstory and the growth of accepting the beast resulting in her hot harpy form, the bits of world building with King's situation that continued on from what Echoes of the Past started, and obviously Lumity became canon. I genuinely expected it to take the entire show for them to start dating but no they got together about half way into the show, all thanks to Hooty meddling in everyone's business. Hooty was always one of my favs and the way he was treated in S1 always bummed me out, so this episode both addressing how excluded he felt while also having him (kinda accidentally) provide the much needed pushes for each of King, Eda, and Luz was just 🤌 the ending too omg the way everyone freaked out about him eating that letter then womp womp it ended up being a good thing he did haha

S2B I have to pick Any Sport In A Storm.

Listen. Listen. This episode is such a comfort, ok? It's got Hunter development where he finally gets to socialize (in a healthy way) with other kids, Willow gets her design update AND she's finally genuinely developing confidence in herself, "what was that?" "I SAID IT WAS COOL >:(", Skara and Viney join the group (which also allowed Skara to develop past just being a popular mean girl), "ice pack for Steve" "Steve is beginning to regret his choices", and of course, Darius. Darius my beloved, the small backstory reveal with the previous GG, "Little Prince (derogatory)" he really does canon use cute nicknames to be hostile, the abomination PJs & also the bubble bath storyboards, the DEPTH of what it meant for Darius to intervene in Hunter's kidnapping attempt so now all the responsibility falls onto him when HE DIDN'T NEED TO DO THAT HE DIDN'T EVEN LIKE HUNTER AND IT PUT HIM IN RISK INTERVENING, "I can wear this proudly now...right?" "Can you?", his extra abomination lounge chair while he gingerly kept messing with the EE, "You're gonna need to be a little more clever than that" *12 seconds later the ship crashed and is on fire all because he was too much of a difficult bitch to Tell These Actual Children he wasn't really kidnapping them*, "Do you have any idea what I'm capable of?!", "I'm impressed! I had you all wrong!", the first head pat, the scroll, " But you could still use a sewing lesson." Like. I still can't believe the pay off of that moment. I immediately fell in love with the dynamic between Hunter & Darius at the end of that episode and for the rest of the show they were never able to connect on screen again it was always a "just missed each other" thing, until FINALLY in the finale Darius ruffles Hunter's hair and then asks him about his dumb wolf shirt and 4yrs later he's Hunter's dad. I was fighting for my life for Dadrius since HM (I was more Uncle Darius after ASIAS until HM) and it PAID OFF LIKE!!!! 😭🤌

Anyway can't forget to praise the Huntlow there too, with the parallel to Willow's parents the gold rimmed glasses the "half a witch" parallels and of course, Hunter's first blush towards Willow on the bi flag colored sky. The Lumity subplot was also really funny, especially in hindsight considering Boscha's issues in FTF haha. A 10/10 episode overall

8. Favorite other character?

Ok so since this one explicitly excludes hexsquad, hagsquad, and palisman, I think I have to choose Hooty. Hooty was one of my favorite characters back in S2A, he's so hilarious and I love his relationship with Lilith so so much, they're so much like Darius & Eber to me haha!

16. Favorite Raeda moment (if you ship it)?

OK SO my pal Lolly really articulated this scene from KT perfectly here

BUT I also have to talk about the fight against Darius & Eber in Eda's Requiem because that scene of them back to back playing Their Song while Eda's curse mutated the magic around them and was going to KILL THEM rewrote my brain chemistry. LOOK AT THIS. LOOK AT THEM.

Just the palpable longing of them both looking over their shoulders at each other as they played. The animation, the music, the symbolism of it being Their Song, the shared history, the way they were willing to die together for the cause of fighting Belos and the subsequent hindsight reveal of how Fucking Stupid it would've been if they did --between King taking Eda's last name & officially becoming her son, Darius & Eber were also rebels trying to save Raine, ultimately all 3 of Raine Darius & Eber would've just been replaced in time for the DOU, like on every single level this plan was STUPID but the longing gay angst these two have for each other almost made them do it anyway.

Raine's voice cracking at the "You have kids?!" was as funny as it was heartbreaking, because it was just another reminder of how much of their lives they've been apart and how Eda finally let others in but Raine wasn't there for it nor was she ever able to do so for them before. Eda's sputtering about "Well they're not mine mine" like she WANTS THEM TO BE but she can't admit it and is still being closed off and Raine quoting Eda in reference to the scene they already quoted earlier in the episode, all cultivating in Raine letting go of Eda's hand -- like they let go of their relationship years ago -- all to save her ;___; idk pal this episode fucked me up so much when it aired and my partner still teases me when I rewatch it like "you're watching the gay episode again huh"

Anyway yeah. I have a lot of love for this show haha
