all the brazilian scholars i've read refer to língua geral with one term (língua geral), created as a tupi-based lingua franca more or less by catholic missionaries in the earliest days of the colonial period, which was then made illegal, then had a resurgence due to people like josé de alencar and so on during the mid-19th century

then i'm reading this mufwene book and he claims there's two língua gerais: língua geral brasílica (a term i have never seen before) which was the liturgical lingua franca; and língua geral amazônica, which was the "emergent northern variety of the same language"

is he splitting hairs? i've never so much as seen this term before, and searches are just redirecting me back to nheengatú/língua geral
