In 1998, I was 16 years old. Radio was dominated by boy bands and the Spice Girls. Other strapping young men my age had gravitated to Creed or Metallica. Because I was a homo but wouldn't know it for approximately 22 years, I became quietly obsessed with one song. A mid if not low tier song. By a "band" known as 5ive.
youtube
I seriously don't know if I ever thought this song was good. It isn't. It's...if you were going to make a parody song of everything that was 1998, without understanding what any of that meant, it would be this song. There are just random hip-hop noises everywhere on this thing, and I cannot express enough how artful average hip-hop production is, that it doesn't sound like this.
These 1998 men are English, and this was their one gasp in America. It was a short and shallow gasp. By 2001 they had broken up, notably after passing on "Bye, Bye, Bye," because "that sounds like an *NSYNC song."
I don't know why this song stuck with me during that exciting year in which I didn't get a driver's license or kiss anyone on the mouth. But it did. It is tattooed on my brain, and pops up there almost every time I am tired or drunk.
Not an *NSYNC song or a Creed song or fuxking "One Week" by the goddamn Barenaked Ladies. No. My mind has preserved this. The Rappin' Granny from The Wedding Singer of boy band hits.

Five - “When the Lights Go Out” (1998)
Today’s entry in “earworm jukebox” is this gem from my middle school years. I might’ve posted this before, but I can’t be assed to dig into the archive and reblog it. *shrug emoji*
I also had Sugar Ray’s “Fly” (with Super Cat), from 1997, right before Five.

Welcome to the Tournament of the hottest boy band members of the 80s/90s
It was inspired by all the tournaments pitting famous beautiful people versus famous beautiful people of specific eras and specific jobs. The polls should start on the 8th of April, leaving around two weeks for submissions. I’ve compiled a list already but you can submit other boys that aren’t on the list through a google form. Feel free to submit non english speaking boy bands.
Propaganda
The only pictures accepted will be pictures from the 80s/90s and very early 2000s. To submit propaganda either use the same google form as for submissions (even if the guy in question is already on the list) or through the submission box or tag me on posts.

With hits like "All or Nothing" and "Liquid Dreams," O-Town once stood alongside other notable boy bands of the late-90s and early-2000s, such as Westlife, 5ive, and Huevos Rancheros. But now, nearly a quarter of a century after their manufactured relevancy, you can see them performing and operating the tilt-a-whirl at a county fair near you.
The twist?
You won't recognize them as they wear the scalps, skins, and outdated attire of their mysteriously deceased, middle-aged brethren and lip sync to "When the Lights Go Out," "Back Here," and "Lou Likes It When We Dress This Way."
"Please don't tell my mom I live like this - she thinks I'm a real estate agent," said Erik-Michael Estrada, lovingly known to fans as the "creepy one."
It might not be the glamorous life of Las Vegas residencies and decades-late abuse allegations of their more beloved counterparts, but it does come with all the free popcorn and unsold turkey legs they can eat. And it'll have to do.

*** This article is interesting. Not sure I agree with all of it. Also the video for 5ive, is the wrong group for the description.
