‘i don’t know it just is’, selfishness and regret

2006 was when we first engaged contact. Both, freshman in High School. Every interaction would begin with a playful punch to the arm. When I least expected it, you would be sure to put a little extra “umpf” into the punch. There were definitely times where it would hurt, but maybe “love is pain” (cue: “BIGBANG - Lies”, legendary song btw). Neither of us minded it. If anything, it always brought a smile to our face. It was one of the things I looked forward to the most during school days, within the ~11 minute gap in between our six class periods days. I didn’t think much of it at the time besides cherish the moment. This went on for a good ~2 years. You had a boyfriend at the time. I had a crush on another girl on the Badminton team we were on. Since she was the best girl player on the team, I spent A LOT of time improving my Badminton game so I could be the best guy player to impress her. It was some crazy long-con and oh so naïve idea I had that didn’t get me very far. We went on about our days and continued to grow up.

Around March 2008, was when I first had developed some very real feelings. You had broken up with your boyfriend, but kept calm and carried on.

I liked everything about you. Personality, looks, sense of humor, ambition, dedication, selflessness, the list goes on. In my eyes, you were truly perfect.

I had no idea how to express myself. Somehow, I mustered up the courage to say that “I like you” and she simply said “oh... i didn’t know that”. I asked her if it made her awkward, but she said “no”. She asked the same back and I said “yeah”, but she said “don’t be!”. The exchange ended there. Things continued to be casual.

We would always meetup in between periods, and walk to class together. I would try and throw in nice compliments and say things like “you’re pretty today”.

We would share the same math book because we had the same math class. I would have notecards in as placeholders / to put my notes on. One day, I open my book and see that my notes were drawn all over by her. She drew little cute drawings and so I would write / draw things back with her. It went back and forth for like 3 days since it happened the week before finals.

Going into the Summer break and beginning of our Senior year, was me talking to a lot of close friends about managing all my emotions, reading into the situations, and figuring out what to do.

Fast forward to Spring 2019, and I had asked you if we could turn our friendship into something more. You politely mentioned that you had to wait until college before dating. “No big deal”, I thought. I’ll just wait it out. “Hopefully, we get into the same college”. We continued to be friends and continued add to our list of great memories.

Little did I know, came the breaking point.

Prior to graduation, there were rumors of you and another guy seeing each other. It ended up being true. I couldn’t help but feel led-on and betrayed. It was a huge turning point in my mental well-being. My first real heartbreak even though we weren’t actually dating. Where did it go wrong? Why did this happen to me? Why am I like this? Questions that I thought about for years to come. Rejection was painful.

I started to ignore you, and you took notice. You didn’t have the courage to confront me about it, because you’re not the confrontational type. Eventually, enough of our friends convinced me to talk to you about the entire ordeal because we were both hurting.

We talked. You had told me that I was one of the best guy friends ever, and that you regret making me feel the way I felt. You never intended to break my heart and felt 100% guilty. You hoped that we could become friends again and that we could get passed this, and that you missed me. You said it would be okay if I didn’t agree, and losing me as a friend would become one of the biggest regrets of your life. I decided that, yes, we could rebuild that strong friendship we had again. At the end of that day, we exchanged hugs and smiles.

I lied. The very next day, I was still in utter pain from it all. I continued to ignore you. I felt like you didn’t deserve a friend like me. I didn’t know how to control my emotions and let it consume me. I just wanted to run away as far as I can. I was selfish.

Soon, we graduated and went our separate ways.

Years pass, and there were few occasions where us crossing paths again became very real. I did everything in my power to avoid it.

A lot of my decisions, things that I involved myself in, and where I am at now, were because of what we had gone through. This single series of events shaped me into who I am today. I was desperate for an escape from all this pain. This would continue even til this day, and no end appears to be in sight.

Looking back at it, I was 100% at fault. I was caught in my own emotions and threw away our friendship. Instead of preserving what we had, I left you with regret. I’m sorry.

This sounds like something out of a fairy tale, no joke (or no “cap” if I’m trying to stay with the times). A lot of people say, what happens in High School doesn’t even matter. We’re young and just still figuring it out. But, this is something I held dear to my heart, and has shaped me to be the person who I’ve become the past 10+ years. I feel like I’m paying the price now. My life has been filled with episodes of depression, and anxiety ever since. I deserve it for being such a shitty friend. Knowing you, you’d want me to overcome and get through this. I’m trying my best. It’ll come someday.

I always think about this from time to time, no matter what is going on. I don’t know what it was exactly, but being around you always made me happy. Anytime I ask myself when I was ever the most happiest, it was our friendship. I miss it.

Fast forward to Oct 4th, 2020. I discovered two songs:

eaJ x Seori - It just is (feat. Keshi’s Strat)

CHUNG HA & Christopher - Bad Boy

As I drowned myself in these two songs, I had a flashback of all those good memories we had (it sounds cheesy, I know. But, its the truth). The lyrics from both songs just really hit home. Even though we had a falling out, I still feel like you were one of the most complete and near perfect people I’ve ever met. I don’t think I could ever say anything bad about you, despite how I felt. These two songs remind me of the vivid memories I had of us.

It was around the time where “Wong Fu” was making a name for itself. They had just released “Just a Nice Guy”. This was around the time where we would listen to / share K-Pop music from BIGBANG, Girls Generation, Super Junior, Wonder Girls, Epik High, DBSK, etc, because it was a topic of interest we shared. You also introduced me to the Mando-Pop singer, Rainie Yang, who I still re-visit and listen until this day. I remember watching the Asian dramas: “Why Why Love” and “Boys before Flowers” because you recommended them to me.

I woke up on Oct 5th, 2020 to a Facebook notification about you. Coincidentally, I had taken the day off, and was inspired to write all of this.

Thanks for the great memories, and life experiences.

Sorry for being selfish. Sorry for only thinking of my feelings and not yours.

Sorry for throwing away our friendship.

Sorry for being one of the biggest things you regret losing in life. I regret it too.

Regardless, it’s been ~11 years and you seem to have got life figured out. You’re starting a family and on your way to become very successful in your career. I’m very happy for you.

Here’s to a life long wish of continued happiness to you and everyone you love.

#WEARSDANI: Kauai, HI

7-Day Itinerary

*DISCLAIMER: This is my first blog post in a year and I’m a little rusty - the photos I took were (to me) mediocre (I COULD TOTALLY DO BETTER THAN THIS) and I tried my best to condense a week’s worth of activities into a short-attention-span-worthy-read (if such a thing existed). Alright, let’s do this.

Oh Kauai, you stole my heart from day one. Known as the “adventurous” and “lush” island, Kauai differentiates itself from the neighboring Oahu by staying true to its Hawaiian roots - untouched and slowly developed. If you’re planning a trip out here, I’d recommend staying in Kapaa or the south side of the island. My family and I were in Princeville (which is on the northern part of the island) and found ourselves having to drive far for most of the activities and attractions on our list. TBH there was a lot more to our trip than what I’ve mentioned below, but these are what I found most significant. I hope you find this post helpful and enticing enough to have you visit the island yourself!

MONDAY

Arrive at Lihue Airport

To get from airport to timeshare, we booked our ride with GO! Airport Shuttle - the total was $98.70 for four passengers. Overall, the drive from Lihue to Princeville is about 45 minutes and on our way to the timeshare, our driver gave us a little history about Kauai, recommendations on where to go and fun facts about the island.

Wyndham Bali Hai Villas in Princeville

This was one of my favorite timeshares I’ve stayed at. The villas are beautiful, the pool is relaxing and the staff is so welcoming/helpful. I’d say the only downfall is that there wasn’t any air conditioning #firstworldproblems - we had the fans on full blast and left the windows/doors open to feel a breeze.

Foodland

Luckily the Bali Hai Villas offers a full kitchen including all appliances - this means homemade cooking for breakfast, lunch and dinner (Banana Macadamia Pancakes ALL DAY NAMSAYIN?!). Our go-to market is Foodland a.k.a. the Ralph’s or Vons of Hawaii!

TUESDAY

Hanalei

Check out Hanalei for boutique shops and local places to eat like the Village Snack Shop & Bakery at Chung Young Village (Order the chili pepper chicken or combo plate - you won’t regret!) or Jojo’s Shave Ice (Their serving sizes are HUGE and you get a little ice cream treat at the bottom of the cone).

Hanalei Bay

If it weren’t for Google Maps, my family and I would have missed the neighborhood entrance to this beach! We spent the 4th of July here, basking in the liveliness of the area - house music blasting in the background, family and friends chillen beneath the trees and cute grandma’s chattin it up while they tan their leathered skin (lol wait is that mean?)

WEDNESDAY

Poipu Beach

Of all the beaches we visited in Kauai, I’d say that Poipu Beach was the most crowded - but for good reason! This beach is family-friendly and has relatively calm waters. I noticed families snorkeling along the shore and swimming off toward a mini island where you can encounter sunbathing seals.

Lappert’s Ice Cream

I’m a sucker for good ice cream, and Lappert’s satisfied all my creamy needs. I ordered a scoop of Banana Fudge hehe (Ya ya ya, I could have gotten something waaaay more “Hawaiian,” but that’s what my body wanted at the time).

The Shops at Kukui’ula

Various events occur on a weekly basis at the The Shops at Kukui’ula, however we found ourselves in the middle of their culinary market, which happens every Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Here, you’ll find live music, fresh produce and product from all over the island! The shopping center itself is a great place for tourists to eat, shop and catch Happy Hour (This is where you can find Lappert’s Ice Cream too!).

THURSDAY

Queen’s Bath

Little did I know there was a small trail behind our timeshare that lead to Queen’s Bath. Queen’s Bath is a series of tide pools located along the coast. To get to the bath itself requires a ten-minute hike past a waterfall. The hike was relatively easy and the path down to the bath isn’t very complicated, however I’d suggest wearing water shoes or a sturdy pair of sandals (I wore pair of Havaianas and the strap popped out lol oops – don’t be me). You’ll notice that there are multiple tide pools that you pass, but in order to get to the *actual* Queen’s Bath, you walk about 5 minutes past the lava rocks (You’ll feel like you’re in the middle of a Jurassic Park scene. It’s. So. Dope.). Click this link to get more information on how to explore this area safely.

Koloa Zipline

My sister and I ziplined through the jungle at sunset with Koloa Zipline. There are a total of eight lines that you can fly across, one of them being half a mile long! This was such a fun experience because we got to fly in different positions (upside-down, backwards, “flying Kawaiian”). However, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND wearing bug spray and pants (yoga pants will suffice) because holy shit I got bit like crazy. Literally 12 bug bites on one leg, no joke. Also, our travel lady recommended the sunset tour because it would be “pretty and not-as-hot,” but the tour took at least 4 hours and by the time we were halfway through the course, it was completely dark and we couldn’t enjoy the view! Other than that, our experience was A1 and I would totally do it again.

FRIDAY

Kayak Wailua River to Secret Falls

Our vacation was jam packed with adventure (Shout out to my family for keeping up!) We booked a kayak tour with Ali’i Kayaks and spent the whole morning exploring and learning about the Wailua River and hiked to the “Secret Falls.” (Rumor has it, we didn’t go to the *real* Secret Falls - I feel gypped… jk). The distance from the dock to the hike was about two miles and the hike to the waterfall was about one mile. It sounds waaay worse than what it actually is, so just dooo ehhht. Also, shout out to Kai for being such an amazing tour guide! The kid knows his stuff!

Dinner at The Bistro in Kilauea

This was probably the fanciest restaurant we ate at during the whole trip, mainly because our trip consisted of Hawaiian BBQ and homemade meals. Our server was so kind and the food and drinks were delicious!

SATURDAY

Na Pali Coast Tour

This was by-far my favorite activity in Kauai. The Na Pali Coast morning tour was so much fun! We booked our tour with Go Blue Adventure and hung out with our tour guide, Madz all morning! This tour is like no other because you are in a completely open pontoon boat, going hella fast across the ocean (If you have any serious medical/physical issues or can’t handle the waves, maaaybe this tour isn’t for you?) We spotted dolphins (There were sooo many. Fun fact: Dolphins are my spirit animal), swam with the turtles, snorkeled with the fishes, explored sea caves, learned about the history of Kauai and even jumped off the boat with the valleys and mountains as our backdrop. If you find yourself in Kauai, I would definitely mark this tour at the top of your list!

Kauai Coffee Company

In a world full of coffee addicts, I find myself on the other side of the spectrum, but that didn’t stop me from stopping by Kauai Coffee Company. They offer tastings, a roasting demonstration and a walking tour of their estate. While my family enjoyed the variety of coffee flavors, I was in line for another ice cream cone lol, but it was coffee flavored ice cream, so that counts for something, right?

SUNDAY

Anini Beach

One reason why Kauai is so great is because there are so many beaches to choose from. We started off our Sunday morning at Anini Beach. Although there is a only small strip of sand to lay out, this beach offers plenty of shade under the trees and calm waters for everyone to swim safely. My family rolled out our mats and rested beneath the trees and watched locals fishing around the shore.

Kalalau Trail

There are multiple stops on this trail, but my family and I hiked up to the Kalalau Lookout - it took just about 12 minutes to get there. Again, I hiked this trail in my Havaiana’s #rebel, but I recommend closed toe shoes. Just picture a never ending staircase, and that’s exactly what this trail is. The view is totally worth it!

Ke’e Beach

Ahh, I wish my family and I spent more time at this beach. Found at the end of the road, Ke’e Beach is the perfect spot for snorkeling (I realize that all of the beaches I mentioned were great for snorkeling, but this is the “perfect” spot, so go here). On the way to the beach we passed by a massive cave and the trailhead to the Kalalau Lookout! I’d have to say this beach was picturesque and the definition of a tropical oasis.

Kilauea Lighthouse

The Kilauea Lighthouse is also a wildlife refuge that is open from Tuesday to Saturday and requires a $5 entry fee. Unfortunately, we did not know this prior to driving out to the landmark, so we were only able to admire from afar *sigh* but you can view the Lighthouse from afar in my photo diary below :)

It’s definitely sad to rank Hong Xuan this low in my ranking, but I truly had no other choice. Her call-out average is the lowest by a margin of 3 points, and she lasted 4 weeks.. I really don’t understand what happened this cycle, because back in cycle 6 she placed 2nd-4th and had a great portfolio. Maybe the shorter hair held her back, which I hated.. Anyways, I really do like her look. It’s rare to see someone that looks like her, and her height was just fabulous (1.90). I also love her promo shot a lot, so I know she has it in her to pull out some great shots! She’s also so cute, and I couldn’t help but root for her throughout her 4 episodes.

Post show she’s signed with Le Nom Vietnam and has walked for DMC, Anh Tuan, Kelly Bui and Chung Thanh Phong during this years Vietnam Fashion Week, not including previous year’s appearances. She doesn’t seem to do a lot of print work though.. She’s also had her fair share of plastic surgery since the show because of (a. an incident during the show and (b. her own happiness, and looks great!

this week has been long & annoying.

there was some good parts - i went to comicon in boston w/ my dad & sister & saw some hella cute waiters at the coffee shop we went to & at the 99- that was pretty nice. legit- the waiter at the 99 was soooo handsome dude, he looked like a younger & more hipster version of brendon urie (if that’s possible) and he was just gorgeous. i got to meet that chick from overwatch - the woman that plays d.va - charlet chung - & ig that was kinda cool. it would have been a bit nicer if she wasn’t 2 hours late lol. two days ago i got to see some puppies at the pet store (i live in a smaller town, so it’s in one of the larger town/cites near mine) & there was this super super super cute puppy - he was a fluffy black and white (insert-breed-here) & he wAS TEETHING ON MY FINGER OMG- he was p r e c i o u s. too bad he was like, more than a thousand dollars. ;/

yesterday i skyped my two guy friends - patrick & sam - for like, 2 hours i think? it was really funny. my new backpack also came in, along with some new boots for school!! they’re dr. marten’s bc my dad insisted for me to get that brand, i guess? they’re this nice reddish brown color & i’m psyched to rock them on the first day! which by the way i’m not looking forward to lol

i also covered my laptop in a shit ton of decals that my sister gave me & my laptop looks awesome now. i did the same w/ my speakers & dudeeee - one of my speakers specifically has a weed & a nearly naked lady gaga on the same side & it looks like jesus lmfao

so i’ve been sleeping a lot lately. i mean, sleep is great. i just wish my body would just automatically wake up at 9 or something so i could actually do stuff during the morning & not eat breakfast at 2 pm like i did today. it’s probably bc i stayed up till like, 2 or so. i just don’t get why i’m always tired?? like i go to bed sometimes at 11 or so & i still sleep in till the afternoon ;( i should probably start setting alarm clocks in the am & stop going to bed so late. i just like sleep ig lolol

i kinda have a prob w/ one of my ‘friends’ & it’s really bugging me- basically, her & i have been friends, let alone been in the same friend group since 4th grade. it’s until 6th grade that she started ditching me & my friend (zoe is her name) for her boyfriends. she did that in 7th before i left to be home-schooled (that’s a long story) & she did it m a j o r l y in 8th grade, let alone throughout the summer. when we went to washington d.c. for a field trip at the end of march (a week after my birthday) she only hung out with her boyfriend (who was tucker at the time) & ditched zoe & her own partner, abby, the whole time. then when i tried confronting her about it in our hotel room (since we of course shared one) she just shrugged & completely disregarded our hurt feels. that was the more major time she did that.

over the summer, she had been dumped by tucker, & not even within a few days did she get a new boyfriend. he was at this campground she goes to during the summertime, so she only got to see him during the weekends, depending if he went or not. she once invited me to that campground w/ her, & it was fun at first. then she kept flirting w/ ANOTHER GUY WHO WASN’T HER BOYFRIEND & i’m p sure she was talking shit about me w/ some of her friends away from one of my own acquaintances i had met there & i. they kept looking at me weird & changing where they were gonna talk every two minutes.

after a while of them doing that, they wanted to go to this place called “teen tower” which is just a treehouse only for teens. i didn’t feel like going, (bc y’know, her friends were kinda assholes to me) so i just waved them off. when we finally met up again, we were at the park right in front of her campsite. her, i, and two of her friends were just talking at the top of the slide - playing some game where we talk about the sexual encounters we’ve had. by the time it got to my turn, i asked, “with a boy or a girl?” & they gave me a confused look. then i said something like, “yeah, i’m bi.” & they just fucking jumped off the thing yelling about how disgusting that being bisexual was. being the sensitive child i am, i started crying, & my friend kept saying it was a joke, but she looked like she was embarrassed of me. she didn’t tell them off or anything or tell them to apologize to me when they came back for my ‘friend’. later that night she ditched me for all those boys while i waited outside until my phone died & i needed to charged. when i went back into her camper, her mom made me feel better by giving me some food & her little brother showed me some games on his ipad. when she got back, she got in trouble with her parents, & gave me the silent treatment the entire night. she even gave me the silent treatment in the morning, not making me feel any better.

pretty much ever since then, she hasn’t been talking to me nor zoe. she keeps posting on social media & sending streaks.. but she’s just.. ignoring us. she also posted something on her spam account on insta about how she wished the friends in nh (which is where zoe, her and i live) were as great and amazing as the friends in ma were. (which is where the campground is that she goes to) i just don’t know. i don’t even know if she’s worth it anymore.. she just gets embarrassed of how bad my anxiety is & how i can kinda be a debby downer bc of that & how i tend to jump to conclusions or assume the worst to happen. i mean, my dad always used to say to me “assume the worst to happen & it’ll be way better than you expected” so that’s what i’ve been doing? i just wish she’d be more.. understanding about anxiety, & not get angry with us if we do freak out about little things... i don’t know. i can’t tell if it’s us or it’s her? i can’t tell if i’m not good enough for her and not good enough to be her friend, or that she’s just stuckup? *sigh* i just don’t know.
